Creative Writing: Admission & Financial Awards

Admission requirements.

Enrollment in the Creative Writing major or minor depends on your ACT score. A score of 22 or higher in reading is required. You also must submit a portfolio of your writing. This portfolio also completes the requirements to apply for the Angie Thomas Writers Scholarship.

If you have questions about the creative writing program, please call the department chair, Dr. Randy Smith, at 601-968-8996. You also can email questions to Dr. Smith at [email protected] .

If you have questions about the scholarship or the application process, contact the Office of Admission at 1-800-960-5940 or [email protected].

If you don’t meet the admission criteria, you may apply for provisional admission. If you’re approved for such an admission status, you enter the program on academic probation, and your status will be reviewed after two semesters.

Scholarship: Angie Thomas Scholars

The Angie Thomas Writer’s Scholarship — named in honor of 2011 BFA alumna Angie Thomas, the bestselling author of The Hate U Give, On the Come Up, and Concrete Rose — was established in the fall of 2019. The award provides one freshman creative writing student with a four-year, full-ride scholarship (including tuition, room, and board). Other applicants may receive smaller awards and the designation of Angie Thomas Scholars.

To qualify, you must be accepted for admission, submit your high school GPA and test scores, complete your FAFSA and submit the portfolio requirements.

For scholarship questions, talk with your admission officer or contact the Office of Admission at 601-968-5940 or [email protected] .

Scholarship: Distinguished Arts

We are excited that you are interested in pursuing your desire to major in creative writing at Belhaven University. At Belhaven, we place a very high value in providing the highest quality fine arts programs.

The foundation of your financial aid award will be your academic scholarship, which is determined by your GPA and ACT score.  After your portfolio review, you may be eligible for additional aid based on your performance level and family financial need.

Here are the specific steps you need to follow:

  • Apply to Belhaven so that we can begin the process for you to be accepted to the University.
  • Submit/report your high school GPA and either your ACT, SAT, or CLT test scores. Based on this information, we will offer you an academic scholarship that recognizes your academic achievement.
  • Plan a campus visit to have your portfolio reviewed with one of our creative writing professors. Your portfolio will be taken into consideration as we complete your final scholarship award package.
  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA (available January 1). The FAFSA will let us know what amount of federal assistance OR Belhaven need based assistance you would be eligible to receive. No matter what you think your family might qualify for from the federal government, we STRONGLY encourage you to complete the FAFSA as Belhaven's grants are typically more generous than the government might indicate you could receive.
  • After we have all your information (academic record, portfolio, and FAFSA) you will receive a comprehensive financial aid package that is influenced by all three of these areas.
  • Please contact the admission office at 1-800-960-5940 or [email protected] to learn more or to meet with an admission counselor.

Course Description

Church and Christian faith practices are in the midst of critical sea-change made all the more intense and unsettling by the Covid 19 pandemic. Navigating this contemporary cultural change presents opportunities and challenges for effective Christian discipleship, to re-imagine and experiment in both ancient and new vessels. This course will use biblical and theological perspectives combined with insights from history and the social sciences to provide portals through which to understand and engage with an increasingly disruptive environment. It will include exploring a range of creative expressions of Christian life for both individuals and communities this Advent, and equip people for spiritual renewal in diverse local contexts.

This is an open access course available as a 10-credit course (accredited by the University of Glasgow) or audit-only for those who just wish to engage with the learning programme for their own personal benefit.

Online Practical Theology Short Courses with Trinity College Glasgow & Theology & Religious Studies,  University of Glasgow

CREATIVE WRITING AS SPIRITUAL REFLECTION

2.png

Prof Heather Walton is a writer and a practical theologian who uses her creative practice to explore contemporary spiritual challenges. She has published widely in both life writing and theological reflection and enjoys working in an interdisciplinary way across a range of fields. Her works include Not Eden: Spiritual Life Writing for this World, Writing Methods in Theological Reflection and Theological Reflection Methods (with Elaine Graham and Francis Ward). Heather is an elder in the Church of Scotland and she finds that the discipline of preaching continually renews both her academic and imaginative work.

This course will enable and support the use of creative writing as a means of theological reflection upon personal, spiritual and contemporary experience. Each week participants will engage with key texts, undertake writing exercises, produce their own creative writing and share their work within small groups. By the end of the course they will have produced a piece of creative writing and a critical reflection on this for assessment and/or feedback. The ethos of the course will be supportive, participatory and require the engaged, respectful participation of all members.

Timetable & Duration

9th October to 4th December, 2023

This course will take place online on Monday evenings, 7-9 pm . This course will be taught over 9 weeks (including a break on the 6th of November) via meetings & instruction and after class activities.

Introduction to the course

This course will provide the opportunity to:

Provide a supportive environment in which participants will develop their own writing practice.

Consider various models of theological reflection upon personal, spiritual and contemporary cultural issues through creative writing.

Critically engage with key texts on theological reflection through creative writing.

By the end of this course participants will have:

Shelley, I published a Christian Modern allegory Novel using KDP, after failure to get anything but Christian Publishers offering Joint/Shared Publications. Research validates this to be a one sided money maker for the Publisher. Profession Editors loved the book and thinks it is very good. Now I have a Amazon book title HellCniht – A Demon Speaks without publicity or an affordable campaign. Free advertising for a good Christian book is a thing of the past. Christian advertising without big cash seems impossible. Any Solutions?

What are your respective church backgrounds? What is Christian Writer’s Groups denominational background? What are your doctrinal beliefs?

May 11, 2022 at 10:18 am

Right now we attend a non-denominational church, but I grew up in the Church of God from Anderson, Indiana and CJ grew up in a Baptist church. We follow Jesus and believe in being led by the Holy Spirit and have people from many denominations in our community.

Prepare Yourself for Rejection

Rejection stings, but as a writer, you better prepare yourself for it. I recently submitted a couple of essays for possible paid publication. The publication part is cool enough, but tack on a dollar sign alongside that and it’s even better. (Of course, with all the hours poured into the writing I figure I would […]

Creative Writing Prompts and Warm-Up Writing

I’m not a fan of writing prompts. They make me feel like I’m back in high school English, waiting to get a bunch of red pen marks all over it. I sometimes read books on writing, trying to hone my craft and learn from other writers. The advice I get from these books is great, […]

The Greatest Gift You Can Give Your Audience

As writers, we want to make a difference and impact in people’s lives (at least that’s our hope). Moreover, as Christians we want to impact people for eternity. And yet, if we’re honest, it so easy to lose focus, grow discouraged, and compare ourselves to others. For example, we read on Facebook that so-and-so just […]

The Perfect Writing Moment

I make so many excuses when it comes to writing. I’m too tired, I’m too busy, I’ll write when I have the perfect moment. I will write later. I always make this promise to myself. I always feel there will be a better moment somewhere in the near future, where the quality of writing produced […]

Inspiration is a necessity

Writing while dry is not productive. I have tried many times to sit down at my keyboard when I’m completely devoid of inspiration. I do believe that inspiration will not just come to you. Sometimes you have to seek it out, and that often comes from simply doing the work. However, I have noticed that […]
