Qualifications

One of the following:

Successful completion of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or its equivalent, such as an interstate or international Year 12 qualification.

Completion or partial completion of an approved tertiary qualification (including certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas, associate degrees and degrees).

Course prerequisites

VCE prerequisites: Units 3 and 4 – a study score of at least 25 in English (other than EAL) or at least 30 in English as an Additional Language (EAL).

Other requirements

All applicants must sit and achieve an appropriate standard on a selection test used to assess an applicant’s non-academic personal and professional attributes.

Admission to this course will consider both academic and non-academic results. 

English language proficiency

All applicants must demonstrate suitable English language proficiency for successful completion of the course.

How credit points work.

To qualify for the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Teaching), students are required to complete 400 credit points comprising of 32 units of study (12.5 credit points each). The 400 credit points must comprise of:

24 units of core units of study (300 credit points)

4 placement units (50 credit points)

4 units comprising a minor or electives (50 credit points)

Students may not complete more than 150 credit points (normally 12 units) at Introductory Level. A unit of study can only be counted once, where units are shared between minors, students must choose an approved alternative.

Swinburne Online offers a flexible degree structure allowing students to adjust their study commitment throughout the duration of their program. Students have the flexibility to study between one and four units per teaching period.

The student tuition fees as published are subject to change given individual circumstances at enrolment. These fees apply to 2024 unit enrolments for HE Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) and Undergraduate Full Fee Paying (FFP) only and may change for units studied in future years. If part-time study is permitted, annual fees will be proportionally lower based on the number of units taken per semester.

The indicative course fees shown apply to international students for the relevant year only. They are based on a standard study load per year. However, please note that fees are assessed according to a student's study load in each semester, and variation to study load will result in an adjustment to tuition fees. International tuition fees are generally inclusive of Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF). All fees are subject to annual review and may be adjusted.

How do I pay my fees?

HECS-HELP is a loan and discount scheme available to you if you are eligible and enrolled in a Commonwealth supported place. A HECS-HELP loan can cover all or part of your contribution amount. You can also choose to pay your fees up front. 

International students need to pay tuition fees up-front by the relevant due date. You can find the due dates on your Statement of Account.

Eligibility for HECS-HELP

You are eligible for a HECS-HELP loan if you have been offered a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) for an undergraduate degree at Swinburne or a UniLink course, and you:

  • are an Australian citizen and doing at least one unit of your course in Australia; or
  • hold a permanent humanitarian visa and will be living in Australia for the duration of your course; or
  • hold a New Zealand Special Category visa and meet the special eligibility requirements for New Zealand citizens.

Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) Online delivery

Key details, about this course, study locations, course structure.

To qualify for the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood), students are required to complete 400 credit points comprising of 32 units of study (12.5 credit points each). The 400 credit points must comprise of:

  • 28 units of core education and early childhood studies (350 credit points)
  • 4 units of other studies comprising of a minor or elective units (50 credit points)

Swinburne Online offers a flexible degree structure allowing students to adjust their study commitment throughout the duration of their program. Students have the flexibility to study between one and four units per teaching period.

Below are examples of study loads for Swinburne Online students:

  • Accelerated study: 12 units of study per academic year
  • Full-time study: eight units of study per academic year
  • Part-time study: four units of study per academic year
  • Recommended study: six units of study per academic year

In addition, students are responsible for arranging and successfully completing the National Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) normally within three attempts through the Australian Council for Education Research prior to completing 200 credit points of study. Academic Progress - special requirements In addition to the standard academic progress rules, the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) has the following additional academic progress rules which are established in accordance with Academic Courses Regulation 62(2): 1. A student is classified as 'at risk' of unsatisfactory progress if they:(a) behave in a manner which breaches the Swinburne Student Charter whilst on a teaching placement(b) fail to attempt both component tests of the National Literacy and Numeracy test (LANTITE) prior to completing 100 credit points of studies 2. A student is classified as having 'unsatisfactory progress' if they:(a) fail to successfully complete the National Literacy and Numeracy test (LANTITE) prior to completing 200 credit points of studies or following three attempts(b) fail a Teaching Placement unit(c) have their teaching placement terminated early by a school. In the case of early termination of a teaching placement by a school, the student will be deemed as having 'unsatisfactory progress' and a progress review processes will commence within two weeks of the cessation of the placement Students who are identified as having unsatisfactory progress will be subject to the show cause provisions in the Progress Review section of the Academic Progress Policy. Professional placements Placements are a key part of your education course and are a requirement for teacher registration. Swinburne Online will provide guidance and support through the Professional Placements Office to enable students to arrange their own placements. Professional experience requires student teachers to hold a current Child Safety Screening checks, as required by their State/Territory, before commencing a professional placement. Description

Help young children develop the skills they’ll use for a lifetime; choose a Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary) online. With this qualification you can teach children aged between 6 weeks and 12 years old, in childcare centres, kindergartens and primary schools.

You will learn how to engage children with activities such as art, music, maths and literacy. You will develop the skills you need to respond to diversity and help each child get the most out of their education during their formative years.

Led by experienced education professionals with recent or current teaching practice, this course combines online learning with teaching placements in early childhood and primary school settings. Our students get great feedback from their placement schools and centres – we ensure you are prepared and supported by our course tutors and advisors to make your placement a positive experience.

Swinburne University has now incorporated the Graduate Teacher Performance Assessment (GTPA) into the final year of primary professional experience units. This narrative based assignment will allow you to demonstrate your competence in classroom practice by creating a unit plan, lesson plans, assessing, reflecting and appraising your teaching. Connecting the academic program to your professional experience, the GTPA provides quality assurance of graduate readiness, giving you valuable experience to help you progress into your new career.

When you graduate, you’ll be qualified to practice as a childcare professional or primary teacher, with accreditation from the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT).

Award requirements

Successful completion of the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary) requires students to complete units of study to the value of 400 credit points. All units of study are valued at 12.5 credit points unless otherwise stated.

Literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education

To be eligible to graduate, students must pass the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE), which is required to become a registered teacher. This test is run externally at the applicant’s expense. Applicants must disclose all previous LANTITE attempts (if any) through a personal statement and upload the results for each attempt. Applicants who have unsuccessfully attempted LANTITE three or more times will not be eligible to receive an offer for this course.

Once enrolled, all applicants must provide relevant Child Safety Screening clearance as your state of residence requires and maintain clearances throughout the duration of the program.

Courses are only available to Australian and New Zealand citizens, permanent residents and humanitarian visa holders.

Course Overview

For young children, the time leading up to entering primary school is an important one, in which a child grows both physically and mentally, and cognitive skills develop at a faster rate than at any other time of life. Early childhood teachers play a vital role in shaping young minds.

The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Teaching) is accredited by the leading industry body, the Australian Children’s Education & Care Quality Authority (ACECQA). Upon graduation, you will be qualified to teach in the pre-primary school early childhood education sector, with the flexibility to work in a range of settings including children’s centres, kindergartens, preschools and early learning centres.

Completed over four years (or part-time equivalent), you will develop a foundation in educational theory, literacy and numeracy, and build the practical skills and techniques you need to manage a classroom and the specific needs of pre-primary aged children. You will have the opportunity to implement these techniques in your practicums and fourth-year work placements.

Duration and Study Load

  • 4 years full-time or equivalent part-time

To qualify for the award of Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Teaching) students must complete 400 credit points:

  • Twenty-four Core Units of Study (300 credit points)
  • Four Placement units (50 credit points)
  • Four units (50 credit points) comprising a minor or electives

Students may not complete more than 150 credit points (normally 12 units) at Introductory Level. A unit of study can only be counted once, where units are shared between minors, students must choose an approved alternative.

Entry Requirements

  • Successful completion of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or its equivalent, such as an interstate or international Year 12 qualification
  • Completion or partial completion of an approved tertiary qualification (including Certificates, Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas, Associate Degrees and Degrees)

Course Prerequisites

  • VCE Units 3 and 4: a minimum study score of 25 in any English (except EAL) or 30 in English as Alternate Language (EAL) or equivalent

Non-year 12 entry

  • Completion or partial completion of an approved tertiary qualification (including diplomas, advanced diplomas, associate degrees and degrees). Additional performance criteria and prerequisite requirements may also apply
  • Students admitted to the course with prior tertiary studies that satisfy part of the academic requirements of this course may be eligible for academic credit of up to 16 units
  • Applicants without a formal qualification but with significant and relevant work experience and appropriate English language skills, or a suitable Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) result, will be considered if they can demonstrate that they can undertake the course with a reasonable prospect of success

Other requirements

  • All enrolled students must maintain a current Working with Children Check from the appropriate State Authority
  • A Police Check may also be required by a school prior to placement

On successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Show broad and coherent knowledge of children aged 0-5 years, notably in relation to how they learn, with comprehensive knowledge of early childhood curriculum and quality frameworks within the Australian context
  • Plan for and implement effective teaching and learning in diverse early childhood contexts, showing appropriate initiative and judgment
  • Apply knowledge and skills to create and maintain supportive, safe and engaging learning environments, with an ability to critically analyse information in diverse early childhood contexts
  • Critically review and apply theory to practice, showing initiative and informed judgment in decision making and problem-solving
  • Assess children’s learning and use clear communication to report outcomes to parents and communities through critically analysing, consolidating and synthesising assessment information
  • Articulate a deep knowledge of the early childhood profession that is informed by critical thinking and synthesis of theoretical and practical knowledge and ongoing professional learning
  • Collaborate respectfully with colleagues, families and children, with communication skills that present clear, coherent and current knowledge
  • Demonstrate conceptual knowledge of the principles of diversity and difference and the implications to children’s rights and inclusive practice, and have the ability to adapt such knowledge in diverse contexts

This innovative and accelerated early childhood teacher qualification helps overcome the typical barriers to undertaking an early childhood teaching qualification through a workplace-based internship model with alternative setting experience. For every unit you undertake, you will arrange a classroom placement, and have real-world opportunities to teach literacy, numeracy, creative arts and sciences while addressing the specific learning needs of children within early childhood services.

The Graduate Diploma of Early Childhood Teaching is professionally accredited with ACECQA and Graduates are eligible to apply for registration as an early childhood teacher with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). Please check with your state’s early childhood teacher registration body for reciprocal arrangements which exist in other states/territories.

This is not offered to students residing in South Australia (SA) due to AITSL accreditation requirements.

Your course structure

The Graduate Diploma of Early Childhood Teaching consists of four double credit point units and runs over one year.

Your units will arm you with knowledge in a range of areas, such as effective curriculum planning, child development, contemporary teaching practices, play based learning, sustainability and wellbeing practices in early childhood teaching environments.

You will also put theory into practice with professional experience embedded within each unit of study via a workplace-based internship model. Already working as an educator? You may elect to complete your first placement at your current workplace.

Tailored support

Swinburne Online will be there for you each step of the way. From enrolment through to graduation, we offer extended, flexible support in each of your units and advisors to assist with anything from technical support to referencing and assignment tips.

Students must have successfully completed an Australian Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care (or recognised ungraded equivalent), and a minimum of five years relevant work experience (undertaken within the last seven years) in an early childhood education setting with related leadership responsibilities.

Additional requirements

All enrolled students must maintain a current Working with Children Check from the appropriate State Authority.

A Police Check may also be required by a school prior to a placement.

English Language Literacy

Evidence of English language proficiency is not required if the applicant has completed a bachelor degree in English in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada or the Republic of Ireland.

For bachelor degrees completed in other countries, the following criteria applies:

IELTS (Academic Module): Overall 6.5 with no individual band below 6.0

Swinburne English Language Centre: EAP 5 Advanced level with overall 70% and all skills 65% or above

Or equivalent measures available at the Swinburne English Language Requirements page.

The estimated annual fee for this course is $24,700*. This is based on completing eight 12.5 credit point units in one calendar year.

Commonwealth provided loans are available to assist eligible students to pay their course fees and there are a range of university, government and privately funded scholarships and prizes.

Early Childhood Teaching Scholarships Program

Scholarships are available in a bid to increase the number of qualified early childhood teachers in the early childhood education sector in NSW. More information can be found  here .

This course is not available to international students. 

Domestic students also contribute to student services and amenities via an annual fee .

The Fraser Foundation scholarship

The Fraser Foundation offers scholarships to help all students achieve their full potential in the field of Early Childhood Education. They are awarded to people from all backgrounds and study areas and are not just for high academic achievers.

In order to be eligible for a scholarship with The Fraser Foundation you must (include but not limited to):

  • have a passion for and commitment to education and early childhood learning
  • have enrolled or intend to enrol as a full-time or part-time student in an approved Australian course of early childhood education
  • commitment to completing your chosen course/degree
  • be an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident
  • can show/prove a genuine need for support or assistance (for example financial hardship, vulnerability, ATSI or rural or remote location etc)
  • be 17 years of age or older.

Victorian Government scholarships

The Victorian Government is now offering scholarships to encourage early childhood teachers throughout the state through the Early Childhood Scholarship Program. Students applying for an approved qualification may be eligible to receive up to $12,000 towards an early childhood graduate diploma. Advance your career in early childhood education

Our education graduates all undertake professional experience via a workplace-based internship model specifically designed to educate children up to five years of age. Every unit you undertake will have a practical placement component, and if you are already working as an educator, you may choose to complete your first placement at your current workplace.

As an existing early childhood educator, this course will help you move into a teaching role or a more senior role, which could see you developing curriculum, policies and procedures.
