Recent IELTS Essay Question: International Aid

This essay question was reported on March 21st. Below is the essay question and ideas to help you write about both sides.

Some people think that famous people’s support towards international aids organisations draws attention to problems, while others think that celebrities make the problems less important. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

Ideas for and against the involvement of famous people’s involvement in aid work:

Support for famous people’s involvement

  • Famous people draw media attention wherever they go which helps to highlight the aid organisation and the problem.
  • Take Princess Diana as an illustration, she championed the problem of land mines and brought enormous international attention to an otherwise forgotten problem.
  • Celebrities are able to bridge the gap between a tragedy that has occurred in a distant place and bring it into people’s sitting rooms, making the problem seem more real and less remote.
  • Famous people’s words often have more reach and more global identity. They are able to influence people in different countries and cultures all over the world.
  • People are more likely to give donations when they are called to action by their favourite actor or football star. Fans follow the work of their favourite stars and like to get involved in whatever they are doing.
  • Famous voices calling people to action have more power and influence than someone the public have never heard of. In other words, a familiar voice is often more trustworthy and more compelling.

Against famous people’s involvement

  • More media attention may be given to the famous person’s involvement than the actual aid organisation and can draw attention away from the problem itself.
  • Celebrity involvement can make the message shallow coming from a famous star who does not directly work with the charity.
  • Using famous people to draw attention to particular global problems helps to promote world inequality which should be avoided.
  • If the famous person’s image is damaged in the media for any particular reason, it could have repercussions on the charity and the problem. This means the charity becomes dependent on the famous person maintaining popularity which cannot always be guaranteed.
  • Some people may be put off the aid organisations if they do not like that particular famous person.
  • People may lose interest in a charity if the famous person stops their involvement.

Please note that these ideas must be adapted so that they connect directly with the issues in the essay question. You should not copy these ideas word for word. Instead you should take these ideas, write them in your own words and apply them to the specific essay question.

Hi Liz, I just want help on this situation Essay. Honestly, I dont know how to start the second question. Do I need to add another paragraph for it or is it enough to include it in my conclusion part?

(Other people can help though)

As most people spend a major part of their adult life at work, job satisfaction is an important element of individual well being. What are the factors that contirbute to job satisfaction? — (this I have an idea) How realistic is the expectation of job satisfaction for all workers? — (this, I dont have any idea. Should I just include this in the conclusion part?)

Thanks for your help. This will really help me in my struggle with the writing tasks.

Hope to here from you.

Hi Liz, Can you please see my essay below and tell me what band score can I expect for this? Essay topic: Parents and teachers make many rules for children to encourage good behaviour and protect them from danger. However children would benefit from fewer rules and greater freedom. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the above statement? Give Reasons.

We often see families and teachers make numerous rules for kids to discipline them and safeguard them against dangers. In my opinion if children were granted more freedom and we made to follow lesser rules they may benefit from it more.

In my opinion, we should set examples in place of restrictions to encourage kids to behave better and be safe. Children tend to do things they are asked not to do. Hence, when we impose rules on them, they either out of their natural instinct to disagree or out of curiosity want to do just the opposite. Especially teenagers while growing up like to be rebellious and think it is fun to break rules.

I also think that when we set too many guidelines we do not allow the child to make decisions and understand the rationale behind them. In the process we also distance them from ourselves. I feel children should be make aware of results of bad behaviour. By doing this we encourage kids to make more responsible decisions which are well thought through.

Children also do, not what they are told but, what they are shown. Instead of telling them how and what needs to be done or not done, if parents and teachers illustrate ideal behaviour in various situations, kids will emulate them. If a child is not given greater freedom, they would always have some amount of insecurity and may also feel suffocated and untrusted. Such kids may also not develop confidence to deal with situations independently.

Overall, I feel that parents and teachers should provide children more encouragement to children to make their own decisions – small and big. They should practice instead of preaching so that kids look up to them and learn. I feel kids would prosper more in an environment where they have lesser rules and more freedom.

IELTS Essay: Governments Helping

IELTS Essay: Governments Helping

This is an IELTS writing task 2 sample answer essay on the topic of whether or not governments should help people around the world or focus on their own citizens from the real IELTS exam.

Second time I’ve seen this topic in the last 2 years!

Please consider supporting me on Patreon.com/howtodoielts to receive my exclusive IELTS Ebooks!

It is impossible to help all people around the world in need so governments should focus on people from their own country.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Many today have suggested that governments should prioritise supporting their own citizenry over offering foreign aid. I strongly agree with this statement as international interventions often do more harm than good and governments have greater control concerning domestic assistance.

Firstly, foreign aid is notoriously difficult to manage. The majority of countries helped by foreign aid either end up exploiting the charity or become overly dependent. A good example of this would be the aid sent to many African nations during times of civil turmoil. Certain corrupt governments would often leverage the aid, whether it be food supplies or financial support, to maintain their autocratic position. Even in the rare cases where aid reaches its intended targets without interference from governments or non-governmental organisations, there is a strong likelihood of establishing a dependence. Individuals generally profit more long-term from developing characteristics related to self-reliance rather than becoming subservient in a dependent relationship.

Moreover, governments are able to affect greater change over their own populace. The are many different tactics that governments can choose ranging from funding a comprehensive social welfare net to allowing individuals to keep more of their tax dollars and contribute to the economy. A standout example of this would be in China where the government has tremendous sway over both public and private entities. This ensures that their assistance is not misused and that it supports truly vulnerable segments of the population. Their oversight and knowledge of their own country translates to a more efficient allocation of resources and this applies generally to governments globally.

In conclusion, there is little support for the efficacy of foreign aid and governments can intervene most effectively in their own nations. Therefore, foreign aid should be limited to times of extreme crisis.

It might initially appear desirable to aid other nations in their need, but on closer inspection, the idea suffers from several problems. Therefore, I strongly agree that governments should support their fellow citizen rather than being in concern of others.

It is an inescapable fact that helping other countries is out of the abilities of a government, and it would be logical to invest the money in different sections that need immediate monetary supports in the homeland. For instance, education and the health care system are two critical areas that impose sheer costs on people’s life. Therefore, it seems reasonable for a government to subsidize these sections with the money intended to be transferred as a charity to low-income countries. Another vital area that the government could put the money on is transportation, which significantly impacts the country’s development. For example, they can construct new roads and railways across the country to flourish an economy. Moreover, the money can be investigated on public transportation to expand the service area and the quality of service.

Admittedly, I agree with those who argue that helping developing countries is a worthy ambition to have, and we should contribute something to un-root the poverty around the world. However, this aspiration suffers significantly when confronted with reality.

In conclusion, I want to restate my position by saying that helping other countries is far from the government’s responsibility. Instead, there are other problems in the homeland that needed to be tackled. (245 words)

Model Essay for IELTS Writing Task 2 Topic: Government Should Not Spend on International Aid

Some people think the government should not spend on international aid because there are disadvantaged people in their country, such as the unemployed and homeless. Do you agree or disagree?

IELTS WRITING TASK 2 QUESTION

Sample Answer

International aid is the transfer of goods or services from a country or international organization to benefit another country. Support can be economical or humanitarian. Some think that their government should not spend on international aid because there are underprivileged people in their own country. I completely agree with this idea. In the forthcoming paragraphs, I shall explain why countries should give priority to their internal problems.

Firstly, a developed country should examine its debt ceiling before volunteering to help other countries. The US is a classic example. According to a survey, the US national debt was about $26 trillion in June 2020. It has increased to almost 800% of what it was in 1989. This would bring down the value of the dollar and impact negatively on the economy and international investments. Eventually, it would aggravate the unemployment problem within the country. So it is high time that the nation concentrated on reducing its debts rather than contributing to international aid. If these countries continue to fund other nations, it will cause serious social unrest within their country.

There is no evidence that the countries receiving foreign aid are progressing economically. Also, according to a survey, foreign aid consumes a considerable amount in the budget which can be used for the nation’s welfare. Furthermore, the countries receiving support are not committed to remaining loyal to the donor country in times of crisis and may not yield to the donor’s interests. Donor countries also need to be wary of the fact that they contribute only their share and don’t overdo the aid.

In conclusion, though it is deemed merciless to stop funding the underdeveloped countries, it should be noted that solving the intragovernmental problems in a developed country is of more importance. Only a self-sustained country will be able to donate generously to other countries.

More developing countries are given aid from international organisations to help them in their development plans. some people argue that financial aid is important but others suggest that practical aid and advice are more important discuss both views and give your opinion., sample answer:.

International aid plays a crucial role in the development of many developing countries. While some argue that financial aid is essential for their progress, others believe that practical aid and advice are more important. In my opinion, both forms of aid are necessary, but the focus should be on providing practical aid and advice to ensure sustainable development.

Those who advocate for financial aid argue that it is necessary to address immediate needs such as food, shelter, and healthcare. Without sufficient financial resources, it is challenging for developing countries to invest in infrastructure, education, and healthcare systems. For example, in countries affected by natural disasters or conflicts, financial aid can provide immediate relief and support for rebuilding efforts.

On the other hand, proponents of practical aid and advice argue that long-term development requires more than just money. They emphasize the importance of knowledge transfer, technical assistance, and capacity building. For instance, providing training and expertise in agriculture, healthcare, and entrepreneurship can empower local communities to become self-sufficient and contribute to their own development.

In my view, while financial aid is important for addressing immediate needs, practical aid and advice are crucial for sustainable development. It is essential to equip developing countries with the knowledge and skills necessary to build resilient and self-sustaining societies. This can be achieved through partnerships with international organizations, knowledge sharing, and mentorship programs that focus on empowering local communities.

In conclusion, both financial aid and practical aid are important for the development of developing countries. However, the focus should be on providing practical aid and advice to ensure long-term sustainability. By prioritizing knowledge transfer and capacity building, international aid can have a lasting impact on the progress of developing nations.

Some people argue that governments should not provide international aid when there are issues such as unemployment and homelessness within their own countries. However, I disagree with this viewpoint as I believe that international aid is crucial in addressing global challenges and fostering positive diplomatic relations.

Firstly, providing international aid is essential for addressing humanitarian crises and promoting global stability. Many developing countries face severe challenges such as poverty, malnutrition, and lack of access to clean water and healthcare. By offering international aid, governments can contribute to alleviating these issues and improving the living conditions of people in need. For example, the provision of food aid to famine-stricken regions or medical assistance to countries affected by natural disasters demonstrates the positive impact of international aid on vulnerable populations.

Secondly, international aid plays a significant role in fostering positive diplomatic relations and promoting peace. When countries extend a helping hand to others in times of need, it can create goodwill and strengthen international cooperation. This can have long-term benefits in terms of promoting peace and stability on a global scale. For instance, countries that receive international aid may be more inclined to engage in peaceful negotiations and collaborations with donor nations, leading to a more harmonious international community.

While it is important to address domestic issues such as unemployment and homelessness, it is equally crucial for governments to recognize their role in contributing to global welfare. By providing international aid, governments can demonstrate their commitment to addressing global challenges and promoting a more equitable and interconnected world.

In conclusion, international aid is essential for addressing humanitarian crises, promoting diplomatic relations, and fostering global stability. While domestic issues should not be overlooked, governments have a responsibility to contribute to global welfare through international aid initiatives.

Model Essay #2:

Some people argue that governments should prioritize addressing domestic issues such as unemployment and homelessness instead of providing international aid. I agree with this viewpoint as I believe that ensuring the well-being of citizens within their own countries should be the primary focus of governments.

Firstly, many countries face significant challenges related to unemployment and homelessness. These issues directly impact the lives of citizens and contribute to social and economic instability. By directing resources towards addressing these domestic concerns, governments can improve the quality of life for their own citizens and create a more stable and prosperous society. For example, investing in job creation initiatives and affordable housing programs can have a direct and tangible impact on the lives of those affected by unemployment and homelessness.

Secondly, while international aid is important, it should not overshadow the pressing needs of citizens within a country. Governments have a responsibility to prioritize the well-being of their own people and address the systemic issues that contribute to unemployment and homelessness. By focusing on domestic challenges, governments can create a strong foundation for sustainable development and prosperity within their own borders.

Furthermore, addressing domestic issues can also have a positive ripple effect on the global community. By creating stable and prosperous societies, countries can contribute to a more secure and interconnected world. Additionally, when governments prioritize addressing domestic concerns, they can serve as positive examples for other nations, inspiring them to take similar actions to improve the lives of their citizens.

In conclusion, while international aid is important, governments should prioritize addressing domestic issues such as unemployment and homelessness. By focusing on the well-being of their own citizens, governments can create a more stable and prosperous society, which can have positive implications for the global community.

The Essay Writing section of the IELTS Writing Module can be a difficult task for many IELTS Aspirants. Thus, it is vital that you polish your essay writing skills before attempting the IELTS.

Some people think that famous people can help international aid organizations to draw attention to important problems. Others believe that the celebrities can make the problems seem less important. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

From the perspective of some people, aid agencies can take advantage of celebrities’ fame to raise public awareness of certain important matters. Others, however, hold the view that such a method may only bring counterproductive results. I find the latter argument more convincing.

Those who support the idea of using famed individuals’ assistance have their own justifications. First of all, people who are considered role models have considerable influence on the public. Emma Watson, for instance, being a prominent actress, is currently the goodwill ambassador for the United Nations, promoting gender equality and undoubtedly drawing a great deal of attention from her admirers. Furthermore, a wider range of population can be reached if an organisation’s campaign is represented by a popular star. In many parts of the world, some film stars are even more well-known to the locals than the organisation itself owing to their appearance in familiar cinematic products. Therefore the introduction of a humanitarian campaign can be further facilitated thanks to the artists.

[do_widget id=custom_html-25]

Nevertheless, I can understand why other people are against inviting celebrities for assistance. When relying on the fame of some people to attract more public attention, an aid programme can also be affected by their scandals. Mass public disapproval may arise from a representative receiving a speeding ticket, or getting caught using illegal drugs, undervaluing the significance of the aid programme. Another foreseeable drawback is that the public might take the presence of famous entertainers as a mere publicity stunt. Without the evidence of real actions taken to mitigate a problem, such as participating in a voluntary team to help the people in need, famous people may fail to draw the attention of people to the situation.

In conclusion, while some people have reasons to believe in the success of celebrities in getting people to pay attention, I tend to think that such an approach might not prove to be effective for aid organisations as expected.

Useful Vocabulary & Expressions:

  • Counterproductive (adj): having an effect that is opposite to the one intended or wanted ==>Improved traffic infrastructures such as broadened roads can be counterproductive as they encourage people to drive faster.
  • Role model (noun phrase): a person who is admired and whose behaviour is copied ==>Many sports stars are the role models for thousands of young people.
  • Prominent (adj): very well-known and important ==>Many prominent inventors in history had their ability imprecisely evaluated such as Thomas Edison and Einstein.
  • To undervalue (v): to consider something less important or valuable than they really are ==>It is very likely for employees who feel undervalued to leave the company and seek the appreciation of their worth somewhere else.
  • Significance (n): importance ==>The discovery of the new drug is of great significance to people suffering from heat disease.
  • Foreseeable (adj.): can be known or guessed before it happens ==>The deterioration of humans’ health is foreseeable if the destruction of the environment persists at the current rate.

There has been much debate regarding the role of famous people in raising public awareness of major issues. While celebrities can attract people’s attention to the problems, I would argue that they are likely to make the problems become less crucial.

To begin with, well-known people can assist international aid organisations in raising people’s awareness of social issues. Firstly, celebrities can communicate information about big problems to a large audience around the world. For example, by taking part in the Ice Bucket Challenge in 2014, various celebrities such as Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg have helped the ALS Organisation to let millions of people know about a disease called ALS. Secondly, since people tend to listen to the ones they admire, famous people are much more likely to be able to ask their fans to take appropriate actions. For instance, a well-known football player can ask people to donate money to help homeless individuals.

However, I believe famous people might make the problems become less important. The first reason is that individuals tend to only pay attention to what celebrities do and say rather than what messages they want to convey. In the aforementioned example about the Ice Bucket Challenge, many people watched the videos of celebrities taking up the challenge without actually learning anything about the ALS disease. This makes little contribution to solving the problem compared to the large number of famous people involved. Furthermore, in order to attract viewers, well-known people usually try to deliver their messages in a funny and entertaining way, which might lead to the problems becoming less serious.

In conclusion, while celebrities can contribute greatly to tackling social problems, I believe they are more likely to make these problems seem less important.

Band 6+: some people believe famous peoples support towards international aid organizations draws attention to problems. other think celebrities make the problem less important. discuss both views and give your opinion.

Some people claim that celebrities who support aid foreign organizations increase the level of attention from the public, however others believe that rather than being helpful this action could make the problem less relevant, in addition people could expect that famous people take the entire responsibility as they possessed much more money and power, compared to the majority. I fully agree with the first statement. Although could exist some minor disadvantages, in my opinion, considering that famous people are also influencers in this new era, when they support organizations, they are also encouraging people to follow their steps at the same time.

Celebrities who offer financial support to aid international organizations could develop a rise of the attention from their community, this because of the plenty of followers that they have in several online platforms like social media, such as in Instagram or Twitter, among others. This scenario could be extreme helpful to get to a global audience, and aware them of the problems currently happening. For example, nowadays there are an enormous amount of celebrities supporting organizations, in order to help Ukrainians, this has increased the attention of the viewers, and they started to support them as well.

However, despite of this action has several benefits, there are also drawbacks. If the audience consider that the celebrities with a better salary than the average population, have a higher moral responsibility, as well as, more possibilities compared to them, this could decrease the impact of the attention in the population slightly.

In conclusion, the fact that celebrities contribute to help and support international organizations could increase the impact of the relevance of the problems, that could also decrease the attention when the public start to believe famous people must take the entire responsibility, and normal people do not have enough ways to help fixing these problems. Last but not least, the way the audience perceive the message about supporting organizations coming from celebrities would affect the impact in their lives.
