Steps to Becoming a SpEd Teacher This Year

The Texas Teachers program is approved by the state of Texas to certify teachers in special education in a number of ways. All you need is a bachelor’s degree in any major with a 2.5 GPA to get started. We will need a completed application and official transcripts to admit you into the program.

Step 1: Training After being admitted to our program, you will complete innovative, engaging online training, and teacher observations to get you ready for the classroom. The Texas Teachers of Tomorrow program provides extensive training in pedagogy, allowing special education teachers to gain all of the skills and knowledge necessary to become an effective teacher before ever stepping foot in the classroom. Throughout the training you will observe the classrooms of veteran special education teachers and complete projects to expand upon that field experience.

Step 2: Testing Special Education teachers who teach core content to a classroom of developmentally delayed students at the elementary or middle school levels will need to pass both the special education TExES exam and the Core Subjects Exam for their grade level (EC-6 or 4-8) . Special Education teachers who teach one or more students who are included in a traditional classroom (also known as ‘inclusion’) will need to pass only the special education TExES exam.

Teachers of any subject at any grade level can add the special education certification by passing the special education TExES exam. Passing this exam allows teachers to accommodate just a few students with disabilities in their classrooms. The Role of the Special Education Teacher

An early childhood special education teacher is responsible for helping infants and toddlers under the age of 5 build learning skills to prepare them for school. Parents, therapists, social workers, and medical professionals all work together to determine the best possible environment and strategies for each child.

Elementary and secondary special education teachers build lesson plans based on their assessment of each of their students’ needs. Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) are central to this process. Each student has their own specific set of needs and circumstances, and the IEP serves as a road map to track the student’s progress, informing the strategy behind how supervising teacher assistants, group activity, one-on-one instruction, and parents come together to assist the student in accomplishing their goals toward progress in the classroom.

Schools like the University of Texas at Austin offer undergraduate and graduate special education teacher training programs that meet state certification requirements. Special education teacher salary by state also varies by district, experience and student grade level, but according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, special education teachers in Texas are neither the worst nor the best paid in the nation.

Special Education Teachers: Preschool

Texas preschool special education teachers had average annual salaries of ​ $49,670 ​, according to a May 2021 report from the BLS. The median annual salary for preschool special education teachers in Texas was a little less at ​ $49,410 ​. The top 10 percent earned ​ $76,010 ​ or more, but at the opposite end of the pay scale, 10 percent earned no more than ​ $24,160 ​.

Nationwide, preschool special education teachers earned an average salary of ​ $71,970 per year ​, which translates to a preschool special education teacher salary per hour of ​ $34.60 ​. The top-earning 10 percent nationally earned at least ​ $123,860 ​ per year, while the lowest-paid 10 percent earned ​ $37,540. ​

Special Education Teachers: Kindergarten and Elementary

Special education teachers in Texas who taught kindergarten through the elementary grades had a median salary of ​ $61,220 ​ annually in 2021, according to the BLS . The best-paid 10 percent earned ​ $76,010 ​ or more, and the lowest-paid 10 percent earned ​ $47,930 ​ or less.

The national statistics showed a median salary of ​ $61,640 ​, with the top 10 percent earning at least ​ $98,970 ​ and the lowest-paid 10 percent earning no more than ​ $46,400 ​.

Special Education Teachers: Middle School

At the middle-school level, as of May 2021, special education teachers in Texas had a median salary of ​ $61,260 ​, according to the BLS. The lowest-paid 10 percent earned ​ $48,260 ​ or less, and the top-paid 10 percent earned ​ $75,330 ​ or more.

National data showed a median annual salary of ​ $61,820 ​ for special education teachers at middle schools. Nationally, the top 10 percent earned ​ $100,310 ​, while the worst-paid 10 percent earned ​ $46,840 ​.

Special Education Teachers: High School

Nationally, high school special education teachers had median earnings of ​ $62,120 ​, according to the May 2021 data released by the BLS . Ten percent earned less than ​ $47,230 ​, but 10 percent earned ​ $100,310 ​ or more.

In Texas, the median salary was ​ $61,680 ​ per year, with the best-paid 10 percent earning ​ $76,880 ​ or more and the bottom 10 percent earning no more than ​ $48,210 ​. Houston, Texas ranked among the cities that employed the most special education secondary teachers in the country. Special education teacher salary in Houston, Texas averaged ​ $64,220 ​ at city high schools in 2021.

Job Outlook

According to the projections made by the BLS , employment of all special education teachers is predicted to increase by 8 percent nationwide until 2030. The BLS projected the greatest growth, 12 percent, for special education teachers at the preschool level. Job demand will be on pace with the anticipated 8 percent average growth of all occupations in the U.S.

The role of a special education teacher is critical in today’s education system. Special education teachers work with students who have learning, mental, emotional or physical disabilities. They adapt general education lessons and teach various subjects to students with mild to moderate disabilities, but also may teach basic skills to students with disabilities that are more severe.

Nearly 1 in 10 Texas students receive special education services from teachers within their school district. However, what a special education teacher earns in the classroom is based on a number of factors, from grade level to location and years of experience.

Special Education Teacher Salary Texas: Grade Level

Most other grade levels follow closely behind, with the exception of preschool:

• $60,030: Kindergarten and elementary school
• $60,240: Middle school
• $49,670: Preschool

Most of these figures align with national averages, according to the BLS salary data. In the United States, the median annual wage for special education teachers was $61,820 in May 2021 (though it’s important to note that the BLS reports these figures as the median, rather than the mean or average salary). 

Special Education Teacher Salary Texas: Minimum Salary

If you’re just beginning your career as a special education teacher, it’s likely that your salary won’t be as high as those with significant experience. However, the state of Texas sets a minimum base salary schedule based on years of experience. This state base salary schedule provides a good starting point for what you can expect to earn.

This salary is based on a 10-month contract that must include a minimum of 187 days of service unless a furlough program is implemented, according to Section 21.401 of the Texas Education Code.

Special Education Teacher Salary Texas: Location

The location of the school district where you teach can be a major factor in the salary you will receive as a special education educator.

School districts in metropolitan areas often offer higher salaries than those in rural areas, for example. According to a salary report database that the Texas Education Agency maintains, an elementary teacher (grades 1-6) in Region 4, which includes the populous city of Houston, earns an average base pay of $64,966. 

In Region 20, which includes San Antonio, an elementary teacher earns an average base pay of $58,371. In Region 19, which includes El Paso and smaller communities like Dell City, that number drops even further to $55,906.

Although this employment data doesn’t offer a salary breakdown by district for special education teachers, it can be helpful to note salary trends based on geographical location as well as communities experiencing a high growth rate.

Special Education Teacher Salary Texas: Other Factors

One of the most in-demand teaching jobs in Texas is in special education. Each year, the state of Texas releases a list of teacher shortage areas.

For the 2022-2023 school year, the teacher shortage areas are:

• Special Education - Elementary and Secondary Levels
• Bilingual/English as a Secondary Language - Elementary and Secondary Levels
• Career and Technical Education - Secondary Level
• Technology Applications and Computer Science - Elementary and Secondary Levels

Secondly, teachers with certain types of student loans may qualify for partial loan forgiveness, deferment or cancellation benefits, according to the TEA. Eligibility for these benefits also depends on whether the teacher is serving in a designated low-income school. Partial loan forgiveness may help you pay off your student loans faster or free up more pay in your monthly income.

Another factor that can influence your earning potential is your benefits package. School districts that cover a high percentage of an employee’s premium can lead to larger take-home pay for special education teachers.

Lastly, because a teacher’s contract typically only accounts for 10 months of work, there are additional opportunities to earn extra income over the summer months, such as tutoring or teaching summer school. During the school year, there may be opportunities to teach extracurricular activities like sports or clubs. School districts typically compensate teachers who do this in the form of stipends.

News from Houston ISD

Hisd raises salaries for special education teachers across the district.

As part of its reimagined employee compensation plan, Houston Independent School District (HISD) is raising salaries for Special Education teachers across the board. In the upcoming 2024-2025 school year, the minimum salary for a Special Education teacher will be $80,000. At New Education System (NES) campuses, that number will be $86,000.

Previously, HISD Special Education teacher salaries fell on the standard pay scale for K-12 teachers plus a $1,000 stipend.

“HISD is steadfastly committed to ensuring our students with special needs are identified, supported, and positioned to achieve at high levels,” said Billy Solomon, Executive Director of Talent Acquisition. “That is our responsibility. Meeting that responsibility starts with attracting and retaining highly qualified educators—and paying them like the valued professionals they are.”

Special Education teacher requirements include:

• Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university
• TExES Special Education EC-12 certification
• Core Content or Generalist certification

“Districts across the country are facing a shortage of Special Education teachers,” Solomon said. “In HISD, we are working to address this challenge by giving our Special Education teachers some of the most competitive compensation in the region, along with the other supports they need to help their students. We are grateful to our teachers—and to our families for entrusting us with their children.”

A career as a special education teacher will involve instructing students with emotional, physical and learning disabilities. Special education teachers may work with individuals of all ages from infants to adults. Qualities of a Special Education Teacher

Special education teacher requirements include fantastic communication skills since they will be working with students, parents, and educators. They must be able to work in a one-on-one setting with students as well as in a group setting. Being able to meet the individual needs of their students is very important. Good computer skills and organization skills are important due to needing to keep detailed records of each student's progress. Being familiar with assistive technology devices in a classroom is a plus. An encouraging personality as well as the ability to be creative and flexible are all great qualities for a special education teacher.

Job Growth for Special Education Teachers

The employment growth for special education teachers is 3% at the national level for the 10-year period ending in 2029, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This will vary according to which state you live in, however, and be driven by increased demand for special education services, and the need to replace teachers leaving their occupations.

All certified special education teachers in the United States must have at least a bachelor's degree and hold a state-issued license or certificate specific to teaching special education students. However, each state has their own specific licensing requirements.

Education Requirements for Special Education Teachers

Many universities and colleges offer special education degrees at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels.

Special education teacher degree classes will include gaining knowledge of disabilities like autism, downs syndrome, visual impairment and more. Students will also learn practical procedures for teaching science, math and reading skills to students who have special needs.

Specialized classes could examine topics like technology for differentiated instruction, low incidence disabilities and more. Special education teacher training will also include curriculum development courses and supervised classroom student teaching. Most special education teachers earn a degree in Special Education or Education .

Special Education Teacher Preparation Program

If your school does not offer a degree in special education, you can enroll in a special education teacher preparation program after receiving your degree. This type of program will lead you toward becoming a certified special education teacher. Licensure/certification can be attained through the completion of a teacher education program that is accredited by CAEP (Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation). Due to the high level of specialization among special education teachers, many states may require additional training before you can get a professional license.

Special education teachers will have students with learning, physical and emotional disabilities. Special education students can range from pre-k to 12th grade, depending on your area of specialty.

Special education teachers will work with students who have a wide range of disabilities ranging from learning, physical, mental and emotional. They are responsible for adapting general education lessons to meet the needs of their students. Subjects taught include reading, writing and math as well as basic skills like literacy and communication techniques. Their students may have disabilities ranging from mild to moderate to severe.

Job Duty Requirements for Special Education Teachers

Special education teachers must be able to meet their students' needs to ensure that each individual student receives proper attention and the assistance needed to succeed in school and life. This may include providing one-on-one assistance in the setting of a general classroom, adapting materials, providing appropriate testing opportunities and more.

Special education teachers provide the families of their students the tools they need to grow as independent individuals in their communities. These teachers work with parents, other teachers and paraprofessionals to create individual education plans (IEP) for their students in order to help meet the individual needs of each child.

A complex and demanding career path, the role of the special education teacher is difficult to encapsulate briefly, given that every teacher's caseload of students looks very different from the next. While there are similarities between elementary to secondary, there are differences as well.

Becoming an Elementary Special Education Teacher

Often considered a generalist (though perhaps with special interest or training in one or two areas of need) elementary special education teachers work hard to ensure that students with special needs are able to achieve all their abilities dictate that they can. Elementary special education teachers:

• Work with students who have Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), autism, Asperger's syndrome, those who are blind, low-vision, deaf or hard-of-hearing, who have Central Auditory Processing Delays (CAP-D), physical disabilities, cognitive impairments or developmental delays.
• Spearhead the development of an Individual Education Plan each year as a working document for teachers, support staff, administrators, guardians/parents, and other professionals to contribute to in order to ensure best outcomes for students
• Outline accommodation and/or modification and/or alternate programming to classroom tasks
• Meet with parents/guardians and internal and external stakeholders for an annual review of IEP particulars and program goals, known as Identification, Placement, and Review Committee (IPRC) meetings
• Mentor and advise professional support staff such as speech pathology, audiology, interpreting, psychological assessment, occupational therapy, social work and medical services
• Ensure that accommodations or modifications during instructional time are also in place during assessments
• Create a transition plan from year to year, and from elementary to high school with post-secondary planning being a relevant goal and timeline
• Set academic and developmental goals for students to strive for - ensure that metrics are in place so that every success is measurable
• Communicate proactively and professionally about student assessment and behavior with teaching and non-teaching staff, individual students, their families and associated professionals, bearing in mind the impact of confidentiality regarding vulnerable persons
• Support the school's culture and practices for inclusion through extracurricular and co-curricular activities and staff leadership

Becoming a High School Special Education Teacher

Often considered a specialist (though perhaps a generalist due to diversity of need or size of school population) high school special education teachers work hard to ensure that students with special needs are able to achieve all their abilities dictate that they can, and then some. High school special education teachers:

• Assess student learning needs in the classroom on a holistic basis, taking into account the students current and past achievements, current cultural and familial framework, and future goals
• Spearhead the continuation of an accurate and effective Individual Education Plan each year as an editable working document for teachers, support staff, administrators, guardians/parents, and other professionals to contribute to in order to ensure best outcomes for student growth
• Act as a daily point of contact for internal and external stakeholders, including the student themselves as their individual need dictates
• Act as a friendly face and advocate, helping students learn the valuable skill of self-advocacy as they approach the end of high school
• Function as a resource for school to work transitioning
• Advocate for and promote students for extensive co-operative education placements both in and outside of the school
• Outline accommodation and/or modification and/or alternate programming to classroom tasks; keep rigorous metrics
• Proactively meet with parents/guardians and internal and external stakeholders for an annual review of IEP particulars and program goals, known as Identification, Placement, and Review Committee (IPRC) meetings
• Suggest beneficial reductions in support for the student to foster self-reliance, reduction in vulnerability, and independence
• Understand theories of adolescent development and how special needs may alter these developmental arcs
• Advocate on behalf of the student's needs to classroom teachers and administration, either individually and on an ad-hoc basis or in a more formal setting
• In-service teaching staff, support staff and administration on student behavior and general best practices for interaction and engagement
• Create a transition plan from year to year, and from high school to post-secondary education or job training. Ensure timelines are accurate; work backward from end-goal.
• Set academic and developmental goals for students to strive for - ensure that metrics are in place so that every small success is measurable

Certified special education teachers have many employment avenues open to them, including consultation, policy development, advocacy and administration.

Special education teachers can work in elementary schools, charter schools and private schools.

Public Schools

Public schools are required to admit any student who lives within the district, regardless of ability, ethnicity or socioeconomic backgrounds. In public schools, special education teachers tend to work with a diverse group of children with varying needs. Prospective public special education teachers are often required to apply directly to the district prior to seeking employment at a specific school.

Private Schools

Since private schools charge tuition for a child to attend, special education services are generally not free. Many smaller private schools do not even offer special education services. With that said, families of students with special needs may be required to hire a private one-on-one aide to assist the child. These schools are generally governed by a private school board or organization and may have religious affiliations.

If a prospective special education teacher is interested in teaching at a private school, they should check with the school in which they wish to teach to find out specific criteria. Many private schools do not have the same requirements for special education teachers as their public school counterparts. In some cases, relevant experience or a bachelor's degree will suffice.

Charter Schools

Charter schools are independent schools that do not require tuition. They have more flexibility than public schools, but are expected to perform better and have a greater accountability. Charter schools are typically smaller and more selective. They may have additional requirements for their education teachers. NASET - National Association of Special Education Teachers: NASET is a national membership organization dedicated to providing support and assistance to those preparing for or teaching in the field of special education.

CEC - Council for Exception Children: The Council for Exceptional Children is the largest international professional organization dedicated to improving the educational success of children and youth with disabilities and/or gifts and talents.

IASE - International Association of Special Education: The IASE works to improve the quality of life and service delivery for all individuals with special needs.

NAPSEC - National Association of Private Special Education Centers: NAPSEC is a nonprofit association that supports access to appropriate special education programs with more than 200 programs nationally and over 400 at the state level through the Council of Affiliated State Associations.

The median annual wage for special education teachers was $61,030 in 2019, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, with entry-level teachers earning less than $40,730, and the highest 10% of experienced teachers earning more than $98,530 per year.

In addition to the salary, educators get great health and retirement benefits. Given the degree of specialty training that a special education teacher receives, he or she has an average salary that is somewhat higher than their mainstream counterparts, although private school teachers do earn less than public school teachers.
