Research Points
Game economy
Gaining RP in War Thunder's economy depends on many factors, but the key ones are: game mode, destroyed vehicle, activity in battle, and the outcome of the battle (victory or defeat). So a player who helped the allies in a battle, performed mission tasks, earned various achievements, and was close to the epicenter of the battle earns, accordingly, more RP than the player who neglected teamwork or the game objective. RP is also earned as a vehicle's modules are unlocked, those earnings go to unlock the selected vehicle.
Distribution
RP earned in battle are distributed to the following funds:
- Research of the next chosen vehicle of the nation
- Research of the next modification in the vehicle used in battle
- Crew experience for the crew slots that were used in battle
- Convertible research point is given the same, total amount of RP as gained in combat and not deducted or divided from the total
Vehicle Research Points are "experience" that a player can spend on researching locked vehicles. The number of points earned depends on the battle RPs earned and the difference in ranks between the researching vehicle and the vehicle on which the RPs were earned. When researching a vehicle using a vehicle of a different rank, a reduction factor may be applied to the RP obtained ( see table ). In the research of lower-rank vehicles with a higher-ranking premium vehicle, there are no penalties. Using the previous vehicle in the line to research the next vehicle has a bonus of +30% RP gain in Arcade Battles, and a +10% RP gain in Realistic/Simulator Battles.
Modifications Research Points are the "experience" that a player can spend on researching the modifications of the vehicle on which they were earned. The number of modification RPs always coincides with the number of research points earned. Vehicle modifications are divided into four tiers. Some modifications may be researched only after the previous ones. There is also a limitation - several modifications in a tier must be researched first before unlocking the next, higher tier modifications.
- When all modifications in a tier are unlocked, an amount of vehicle research points is awarded. The award corresponds to 20% of the total RP cost for that tier. For example, if there are 4 modifications of 1,500 RP each, the award is 0.2 x 6,000 = 1,200 RP. While this award is minimal for low-rank vehicles (a few hundred RP), it can be consequential with top-tier vehicles (several thousands of RP). This award is received when each tier is completed (4 tiers in total). Furthermore, the award is not impacted by research efficiency and other multipliers .
Crew Experience Points are calculated based on research points for the different battle modes as follows:
- In Arcade battles - 30 experience points for 1,000 RP
- In Realistic battles - 11.3 experience points for 1,000 RP
- In Simulator battles - 9 experience points for 1,000 RP
Multipliers
Each vehicle has RP and game currency multipliers, which can be found in their respective vehicle cards. The higher the multiplier, the more RP and SL the vehicle will earn. Premium vehicles have a multiplier which is doubled (compared to regular vehicles).
In addition to vehicle multipliers, players can take advantage of a wide range of other boosters.
- Premium account - long-lasting boost which can be purchased with GE.
- Boosters - in-game items which can be activated before a battle to provide a specified gain.
- Talisman - a modification for individual vehicles which significantly increases the amount of RP they gain.
Researching high-ranked vehicles while using low-ranked vehicles in battles, and vice versa, will lead to a penalty which is applied to the RP obtained from those battles (see Rank difference research penalties table). High ranked premium vehicles are excluded in that they do not have any research penalty when used to research low-ranked vehicles.
- Currency and research points

How to Research Fast in War Thunder
War Thunder is undoubtedly one of the most interesting and action-packed MMOs on the market. It has lots of vehicles to unlock and research, and we mean hundreds of them. This is why here’s our guide to how to research fast in War Thunder to unlock and upgrade all your tanks, planes, and boats.
Research Points in War Thunder
To be able to research quickly, you should know how the game economy works. Almost everything in War Thunder depends on research points. For example, you need RP to research and use crew training, modify all vehicles in the game or unlock new ones.
The amount of research points you earn in War Thunder depends on many variables. If you pay attention to them, you’ll be able to earn more points than other players. So what are they?
- Number and type of enemy vehicles you have destroyed
- What you do in battle (Assists, mobility, damage dealt, etc.)
- Result of the battle (Victory or Defeat)
That sounds very simple when you read it here, doesn’t it? However, considering that all the players in the battle are trying to do this, your task may not be so simple.
Help your allies during the war, complete the mini-missions that the game gives you, and if possible, use your radar to play in the area closest to the heat of the battle. If you do well at this, you’ll have finished a game with a lot of research points. Of course, not everything is limited to these.
How To Research Fast in War Thunder
After you have earned a lot of RP with the above tactics, it’s time to spend it. We’ll get into all the details in a moment, but first, let’s look at what the categories are. Research points you earn in War Thunder are usually used in four main funds:
- Vehicle Research Points : As the name implies, you can use it to unlock new vehicles. How many of the points you earn at the end of each battle are transferred to this area depends on several variables.
- Modifications Research Points : You can use these points to research modifications to vehicles you have already unlocked.
- Convertible Research Points : This is where the game may be the only P2W stomper. With those research points, you can research any vehicle you want with no restrictions. You’ll need Golden Eagles, the premium currency for that.
- Crew Experience Points : You can use them to research different battle modes.
These are the four places where you can redeem research points in War Thunder. Your focus should always be on the first two to strengthen your ships and become feared in battles. Especially if you’re a free-to-play player.
Vehicle Research Points
War Thunder is a vehicle war game from start to finish. Remember that and always focus on spending Vehicle Research Points wisely. Because if you don’t spend those points wisely, you may eventually want to reset everything and start over.
At the end of each battle, you’ll receive Vehicle Research Points. However, the amount of these points depends on many variables, such as which vehicle you use in the battles, whether it’s a premium vehicle or not, and where the vehicle your research is in the rankings. The following table will help you understand this:
As you can see in the table, it’s always best to research the next vehicle for fast research in War Thunder. If you research another vehicle that’s a large level difference from your own vehicle, the point cost will be high.
Modifications Research Points
Being successful in War Thunder isn’t only possible by unlocking high-level vehicles. You should also research the modifications for these vehicles. These researches usually help you improve basic abilities such as defense, attack, and movement speed.
You can’t use modification research points at your own discretion. To research higher-level modifications, you must first complete the lower-level ones. There are three types of modifications for each kind of vehicle:
- Planes: Flight Performance – Survivability – Weaponry
- Helicopters: Flight Performance – Survivability – Weaponry
- Ground Forces: Mobility – Protection – Firepower
- Naval Forces: Seakeeping – Unsinkability – Firepower
There are dozens of different modifications in each of these categories. So if you want to use your limited research points wisely, focus on one type of vehicle category and start developing it.
Convertible Research Points
If the research points you get at the end of the battle aren’t enough, you can use these points. However, to use Convertible Research Points, you must spend the game currency Golden Eagles (GE). GE, which you can buy for real money, gives you a more comfortable research budget.
When you spend 1 Golden Eagle, you can convert 45 of these points into regular research points. CRPs, which you get at the end of each battle, don’t affect free-to-play players. But if you want to spend some real money, this resource will be a great help.
Crew Experience Points
With these points, you can improve your crews which will help you the most in the battles. The amount of these points you get at the end of each battle depends on which game mode you play and how many RP you earn in those battles.
Simulation game mode – 9 CE points for 1000 RP Realistic game mode – 11.3 CE points for 1000 RP Arcade game mode – 30 CE points for 1000 RP
So if you want to focus on improving your crews, you should give preference to Arcade mode. Other than that, there are other ways to increase the research points you earn. Almost all of them are boosters that you get through in-game purchases.
To get a bunch of research points you need to master the art of combat on the sea, ground, and in the air. And we have a few guides here to help you:

We wash up or we die. that's the plan., a beginner’s guide to war thunder – researching new aircraft.
Part of The Complete Beginner’s Guide
After each battle you are awarded with Research Points (RP), and what do Research Points make? Research Prizes! RP contribute towards unlocking modifications for the planes you were flying (covered in a separate guide ), and researching new aircraft.
To see all the exciting planes you’ll (eventually) be able to fly, click the “Research” button in the hanger:
The Russian tech tree; not to be confused with the Russian techno tree
Aircraft are divided into five ranks or eras, broadly chronologically but with some adjustments to account for performance in a game context, for example the German Do 217 J series heavy fighters in Rank II are derived from the Do 217 E bomber in Rank III. Aircraft you own have a blue background, aircraft you can research have a slightly darker blue background, aircraft that aren’t available for research yet have a red background. Over on the right hand side of the tree are Premium and Gift aircraft, with a yellow/gold background. Premium aircraft are bought with Gold Eagles (the real money currency), and don’t need to be researched; Gift aircraft are generally available in bundles, or sometimes in promotions or giveaways.
To progress through the ranks you need to unlock a certain number of aircraft, shown under the Roman numeral on the left; in the screenshot I’ve got three Rank I aircraft and need six in total before I can research a Rank II aircraft, then I’ll need to research four of Rank II before I can start on Rank III.
To unlock a specific plane you’ll need to have researched the previous plane in its line (connected via an arrow). Some aircraft, such as the I-15, SB and Su-2, have a little tab in the top left corner of their icon; these are stacks of planes, if you click one then a window should pop up with two or more variants of that plane. Stacking can be a little inconsistent; the LaGG-3-8 and LaGG-3-11 aren’t stacked, despite being very similar, whereas the LaGG-3-35 and LaGG-3-66 after them have more significant differences, but are stacked. You only have to research one of a stack of planes to move down the line, so to get to the La-5 you have to research the LaGG-3-8, then the LaGG-3-11, then the LaGG-3-35, but you can skip the LaGG-3-66 (or you can research it as well, if three LaGG-3 variants just aren’t enough).
Hovering over a plane in the tree pops up a little stat card showing its salient details:
The BB-1 light bomber; BB stands for ‘Blues Bomber’ (No it doesn’t – Ed)
The precise figures may not be completely accurate, and will vary depending on upgrades, but it should give a rough idea of the performance and armament. To get a first-hand impression you can also take any plane eligible for research for a test flight, either right-click or use the second little icon over the plane.
The second stat on the card, “Battle Rating” (1.7 in this example), is a more granular indication of plane performance within Ranks, and very important for matchmaking. Battle Rating increases in rounded 0.33 increments (1.0, 1.3, 1.7, 2.0, 2.3 etc.), and in general you should meet opponents with Battle Ratings up to 1.0 higher or lower than your highest BR.
To research an aircraft, simply click the “Research” button just underneath it. You can research one aircraft per country at any time; the trickiest bit can be deciding what to choose next. For a new USSR player looking for a fighter there’s either the I-16 Type 18, the LaGG-3-8 or, if you click on the I-15, then the next option in that stack is the I-15bis. Of those, the LaGG-3-8 is quite a step up, a monoplane considerably faster than the other choices, and armed with a 20mm cannon, whereas the I-15bis is a slightly upgraded version of the starting biplane, reflected in their Battle Ratings of 2.0 and 1.3 respectively. For a brand new player, I’d actually suggest starting with the I-15bis; as mentioned the matchmaker works on Battle Rating, so if you fly the LaGG then you’ll meet tougher opponents.
So, after decided which aircraft you’d like next and putting it In Research, all you have to do is fly your other aircraft. After each match you should see your progress towards the new plane:
The results are in…
In this example I’m researching the I-153 M-62 and gained 1064 Vehicle research points in the battle, almost half the 2400 I’ll need to unlock it, represented by the yellow bar. Another battle or two should be enough to finish the research, especially if the team wins (victories grant a hefty RP bonus). Once unlocked, you need to buy the new plane with silver lions (the “Research” button under the plane turns into a “Buy” button), and then put it into service. You can replace one of your existing planes, but if you have enough money I would buy a new crew slot by clicking the “Recruit Crew” button at the bottom of the screen; the fourth slot costs 10,000 silver lions and the fifth slot costs 50,000 lions. You can buy further crew slots with gold eagles if you want, but five planes should last through most battles unless you’re particularly bold and/or unlucky. Either way you’ll need to pay to train the crew with the new plane; upgrading can be an expensive business!
Click the “Research” button again to select the next aircraft you’d like to unlock; to focus on fighters, I’d suggest a new USSR player gets the I-15bis, the I-153 M-62, then the I-16, LaGG-3-8 and LaGG-3-11. For ground attack the BB-1 and Su-2 series have a useful combination of guns and bombs, and lead to the Il-2 Sturmovik; for heavier bombing there’s the SB series. If you’re not sure, or like a bit of a mix, then research one of each!

This was really helpful! I’m a new War Thunder-er and I had no idea how to get new planes. Thanks!
I am trying to reasearch the PBY but there is nothing before it. Once I hit the reaserch button, what plane do I fly?
You can fly anything in Tier I or II to research the PBY, there’s nothing with a particular bonus towards it.
hey, do you think you could update this guide?
I think it’s still generally accurate, isn’t it? Though the interface colours have changed a bit since the screenshots were taken… If anything is out of date or unclear, if you could point out the specific bit I’ll try and give it a tweak, ta.
what are *convertible* research points? they keep accumulating as I play along (I now have close to 400K of them!) but I can’t use them anywhere to boost my research…
Ah, yes; you can use Gold Eagles to convert that into ‘proper’ RP, to actually research new planes with. It used to be called ‘free’ RP, but what with Gold Eagles costing real money that wasn’t the best description! If you click the yellow lightbulb at the top of the screen you should get the “Accelerated Research” window for the plane or tank you’re currently researching, and you can adjust the slider to spend Eagles to convert RP. It’s not a bad way of using some of the Eagles you get from tutorials to finish off some early research when you really want a new plane, but it gets pretty expensive later on so I wouldn’t worry too much, unless you have plenty of spare cash.
(That reminds me, I need to update the terminology in the Premium Options section of the guide)
Hey I’m confused on research still, so my big question I need answered is “By doing battles and acquiring research points only go towards one country or can you use those research points towards any plane.”
Hello there! Research points always go towards the same country and type of vehicle (air or ground) that you play, so if you fly British aircraft, you work towards unlocking another British aircraft, or if you drive US tanks you work towards unlocking another US tank.
I legitmately cannot find where the Research points are on the game. Can anyone point it out on the main menu?
Regular research points are earned after a battle, and go towards the plane or tank you’ve selected to research. If you open up the Research window (as in the first screenshot here), the vehicle you’re researching has a bar underneath showing research progress, you can hover over it to show the details (the second screenshot shows the BB-1 with 1442 Research Points out of the 4080 needed to unlock it).
You also get convertible research points that you can convert into regular research points using Gold Eagles, the total of these is shown at the top of the screen next to the yellow light bulb icon.
Mushroom, as anti bot word. xD
Anyway~! As the game currently is with the British tank line being implemented in chunks, will the RP accumulate with an unspecified vehicle and then I’ll be able to use said points when the tanks are released? Or will the points just be converted into “free RP”?
I’m afraid the extra points just accumulate as convertible RP rather than building up for the other tanks once they’re available.
I’m a newbie. Mistakingly, I put a german panther (5.7) into research. I am fighting with level 1 tanks. How do I remove the panther and choose something at level 2?
Just click the icon below the Panther (with two arrow icons), and you should be able to replace it with a lower level tank; if you haven’t got anything suitable then use the “Send on holiday” option to leave the slot empty until you finish research on something else.
how do you research a level 1 uk aircraft is there is nothing before it, i really need 2 know as im researching a lv 1 bomber now
Just pick the aircraft you want to research if there’s nothing before it in the tree, there’s no special requirements, you’ll research it with whatever you fly.
Great guide. Already knew most (if not all) of it, been playing over a year, with some brakes inbetween.
I still have a doubt, though. About those stacked planes. It appears the last one in the stack has no extra Research Bonus to the next plane in the line. For example, in the German tech tree, if I fly a Bf 109 E-4 will I get the same bonus to research the F-1 that I would get from flying the E-1?
My guess is no, which is a shame, since there is little incentive to research a given stack, despite some amazing aircraft available. (Fulgore, I’m looking at you!)
Hi Zoso. Thank you for the writing this piece, you’re very articulate and you communicate well. Out of interest what if I was only interested in researching the British (heavy) bomber line ONLY. As the line British bomber line progresses, what happens regarding my reserve aircrafts as I progress in research of the one line? Do I have to research reserve aircraft? Thank you.
I’m afraid you probably won’t be able to stick to heavy bombers only; you need to research 4-6 aircraft at each Rank (the roman numeral on the left of the research screen) before you unlock the next one so you’ll have to branch out a little bit.
What I want to know is how to use the ‘accelerated research” button. it says I don’t have any RP to convert but I have a ton
How long does it take to research? I literally started researching 2 hours ago and I don’t think it went up at all I’m new btw
Hello and thanks for this War Thunder Beginner’s Guide. Gaijen should consider adding these details to their core tutorials somewhere on the User interface screen for War Thunder. I first checked out War Thunder I believe around 2015 using a Play Station System. I was immediately frustrated by their user interface and that there were basically no instructions on how to use it. As a good example of this, until I reread your guide I had no clue which planes I actually owned. Why not turn the background GREEN for the planes you own instead of the highly misleading Blue and “slightly” darker blue backgrounds? I really feel like Gaijen is losing fans and followers for simple “user friendly” miscues like this. Also, trying to use the Play Station controllers for flying and aiming the cursor was one of the most frustrating endeavors I have EVER had with a computer game. After discovering Mouse Aim and reviewing several online YouTube guides, flying and aiming has become much friendlier and enjoyable promoting the desire to continue on. Again thanks for the guide. I wish I knew how to provide direct feedback to Gaijen on some of these thoughts. I will copy this text and try to get it to someone on their Software development team. If you happen to have a link I can use please let me know at [email protected] . Last note, I have recently purchased one of the Oculus Quest 2 VR headsets and it takes the flying experience to a whole new level. It seems to work well in War Thunder also. Happy flying.

Convertible Research Points
- View history
With the apropos acronym CRP (pronounced c-r-p), convertible research points are the totally CRP "points" that you get for playing hour upon hour of War Thunder. They have virtually no value as far as can be ascertained, except to insult dedicated players by giving them a shiny bauble to have as an illusory "reward" for playing. Like a pink balloon or brownie button. If one tries to use said CRP points, one ends up paying more in real money "Golden Eagles" than one would have spent by actually purchasing an elite vehicle of similar class from the online store. Please add your thoughts as to why CRP exist (or should they), and provide input and suggestions to the makers of War Thunder (Gaijin Entertainment http://gaijinent.com ) as to how they can actually change the CRP system to be one that ACTUALLY rewards players AND makes them money. How many CRP points do you have (this player has 3.5 MILLION)? Do YOU use them? Please, give a CRP, and let us know!

Research Points (RP), or "experience", is used to research and advance in vehicles, modifications, and crew training.RP gain in the game depends on the game mode played.. Game economy. Gaining RP in War Thunder's economy depends on many factors, but the key ones are: game mode, destroyed vehicle, activity in battle, and the outcome of the battle (victory or defeat).
THE fastest way possible is using your convertible rp and exchange it at 45rp/1ge ratio. /s. Fastest way to grind it is prem acc+ prem vehicles (+- 1 tier of the research vehicle) + talisman'd previous vehicle + rb (if air) and probably ab/rb on ground depending on if you want to research air + ground or just ground. 1.
Because if it's air, you can actually stack loads of RP with a solid ground pounding match. But other than that, there isn't much to say. Bomb-a da bases! With premium you'll get like 1,5k - 3k rp a base, at least thats what i get. I've been grinding German tech tree for like a month, I need sleep. And some tips.

To translate that to the amount of Research Points required, it would be 31,680 Research Points since for every 200 Research Points, one Activity Point is generated [158.4 * 200]. Since Activity Points are tied to Research Points. It is best to use Premium Vehicles/Accounts (which have Research Boosters) to maximize your Research Points per game.

Objectively speaking, AB nets the fastest gains for RP simply because the matches refresh faster via using smaller line ups that you can burn through and move on to the next match. Soviet planes can do pretty well in AB as well since cannons consistently deal lethal damage better than .50 cals do.
Dear War Thunder players! Following your requests we have changed Research Points requirements needed to obtain new aircraft in the recent War Thunder Update 1.37.42. Best method getting research point? Basically cause as much damage to the enemy team as possible. Get as many kills, captures, assists, hits, critical hits, and AI unit kills as possible. If you want to research a plane or tank faster use the plane or tank before it because that gives a slight RP boost when researching the next vehicle.
Play reallistic, Arcade give you less research points. If you are grinding for a vehicle, using the one that's just up gives an extra. Don't rush, take your time and play being more wise, this is not an action game where you kill base on your reflexes, you success by taking good decisions and taking advantage of the map an situation. #2.

In the opening windows click "Activity" at the bottom. You'll see the activity of your squadron & your activity in a time period (this one ending May 18th). At the end of the period, depending on your squadron's activity & yours, you'll get to spend the squadron RP points you earned (up to 20k) on a squadron vehicle.
You get more RP from Realistic but more SL from Arcade in general. Also if you are bad at either it is better to play what you are good at. Playing a premium vehicle also helps if it is +/- the same tier as what you are researching. Additionally if you use the vehicle directly before the one that you are researching it has a bonus. 1. m00ndog1307.
if you are using the plane before the one your researching it gives you 110% research to the plane you are researching. It's 130% research efficiency. it might just be just 100% I haven't checked in a while. Get better at the game, and you will start earning more as you get more kills / etc. The Mods are in tiers.
