Siddhartha Gautama, the Lord Buddha, was born in 623 B.C. in the famous gardens of Lumbini, which soon became a place of pilgrimage. Among the pilgrims was the Indian emperor Ashoka, who erected one of his commemorative pillars there. The site is now being developed as a Buddhist pilgrimage centre, where the archaeological remains associated with the birth of the Lord Buddha form a central feature.

Outstanding Universal Value

The Lord Buddha was born in 623 BC in the sacred area of Lumbini located in the Terai plains of southern Nepal, testified by the inscription on the pillar erected by the Mauryan Emperor Asoka in 249 BC. Lumbini is one of the holiest places of one of the world's great religions, and its remains contain important evidence about the nature of Buddhist pilgrimage centres from as early as the 3rd century BC.

The complex of structures within the archaeological conservation area includes the Shakya Tank; the remains within the Maya Devi Temple consisting of brick structures in a cross-wall system dating from the 3rd century BC to the present century and the sandstone Ashoka pillar with its Pali inscription in Brahmi script. Additionally there are the excavated remains of Buddhist viharas (monasteries) of the 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD and the remains of Buddhist stupas (memorial shrines) from the 3rd century BC to the 15th century AD. The site is now being developed as a Buddhist pilgrimage centre, where the archaeological remains associated with the birth of the Lord Buddha form a central feature.

Criterion (iii): As the birthplace of the Lord Buddha, testified by the inscription on the Asoka pillar, the sacred area in Lumbini is one of the most holy and significant places for one of the world’s great religions.

Criterion (vi): The archaeological remains of the Buddhist viharas (monasteries) and stupas (memorial shrines) from the 3rd century BC to the 15th century AD, provide important evidence about the nature of Buddhist pilgrimage centres from a very early period.

The integrity of Lumbini has been achieved by means of preserving the archaeological remains within the property boundary that give the property its Outstanding Universal Value. The significant attributes and elements of the property have been preserved. The buffer zone gives the property a further layer of protection. Further excavations of potential archaeological sites and appropriate protection of the archaeological remains are a high priority for the integrity of the property. The property boundary however does not include the entire archaeological site and various parts are found in the buffer zone. The entire property including the buffer zone is owned by the Government of Nepal and is being managed by the Lumbini Development Trust and therefore there is little threat of development or neglect. However the effects of industrial development in the region have been identified as a threat to the integrity of the property.

The authenticity of the archaeological remains within the boundaries has been confirmed through a series of excavations since the discovery of the Asoka pillar in 1896. The remains of viharas, stupas and numerous layers of brick structures from the 3rd century BC to the present century at the site of the Maya Devi Temple are proof of Lumbini having been a centre of pilgrimage from early times. The archaeological remains require active conservation and monitoring to ensure that the impact of natural degradation, influence of humidity and the impact of the visitors are kept under control. The property continues to express its Outstanding Universal Value through its archaeological remains. The delicate balance must be maintained between conserving the archaeological vestiges of the property while providing for the pilgrims.

The property site is protected by the Ancient Monument Preservation Act 1956. The site management is carried out by the Lumbini Development Trust, an autonomous and non-profit making organization. The entire property is owned by the Government of Nepal. The property falls within the centre of the Master Plan area, the planning of which was initiated together with the United Nations and carried out by Prof. Kenzo Tange between 1972 and 1978.

The long-term challenges for the protection and management of the property are to control the impact of visitors, and natural impacts including humidity and the industrial development in the region. A Management Plan is in the process of being developed to ensure the long-term safeguarding of the archaeological vestiges of the property while allowing for the property to continue being visited by pilgrims and tourists from around the world.

Now, it become too much for him to handle and at the age of 30years he left his house in the search of human life and death. At that time his son become 6years old and he left the house at midnight with his horse.

At that time he has done each and every method to attain truth and even reduce himself to a skeleton. However he neither get satisfied nor he get any answer from anyone in that time and all the people who start with him, just left him alone in the jungle.

Now, he lost all the sense and even cannot walk one step so, he sit under the papal tree with a determination of getting truth or died there on that meditative posture.

He sat there seven days and seven nights on meditative position and finally on eight day he got truth of life and death. He attains nirvana also known as enlightenment and realizes all the cycle of life and death on full moon day.

Finally, after he get enlightenment than he decided to teach all the human being about the lifecycle and cause and effect on this universe. He got truth after 6years of up and down on his life and he continuously teach his teaching to every person he found at that time.

His teaching is also very famous name as Dhama. His teaching based on middle path of life or balance life and at first he gives this knowledge to five monks. Whoever cross the path of Buddha or whenever Buddha cross any village, many of them become disciple of Buddha.

He has visited by giving his teaching almost to everyone and we can also say almost in overall Asia that time. Gautam Buddha is popularly called Lord Buddha or The Buddha. He was a great and religious leader of ancient India. He is regarded as the founder of Buddhism, which is one of the most followed religions in the world today.

His teachings are based on his insights of suffering and dissatisfaction ending in a state called Nirvana.

Gautam Buddha is considered to be one of the greatest religious preachers in the world. He was the preacher of peace and harmony. Gautam Buddha, the messenger of peace, equality, and fraternity, was born in Lumbini in the 6th Century BC, the Terai region of Nepal. His real name was Siddhartha Gautam. He belonged to the royal family of Kapilavastu. His father was Suddhodhana, the ruler. Maya Devi, Gautam’s mother, died soon after giving birth to him. He was a thoughtful child with a broad mind. He was very disciplined and liked to question contemporary concepts to understand and gather more knowledge.

He wanted to devote his life to spirituality and meditation. This was what his father did not like about him. He went against his father’s wishes to find spirituality. His father was worried that someday, Gautam will leave his family to pursue his wishes. For this, Suddhodhana always guarded his son against the harshness surrounding him. He never let his son leave the palace anytime. When he was 18 years of age, Gautam was married to Yashodhara, a princess with magnificent beauty. They had a son named ‘Rahul’. Even though Siddhartha’s family was complete and happy, he did not find peace. His mind always urged him intending to find the truth beyond the walls.

As per the Buddhist manuscripts, when Siddhartha saw an old man, an ailing person, and a corpse, he understood that nothing in this material world is permanent. All the pleasures he enjoyed were temporary and someday, he had to leave them behind. His mind startled from the realization. He left his family, the throne, and the kingdom behind and started roaming in the forests and places aimlessly. All he wanted was to find the real truth and purpose of life. In his journey, he met with scholars and saints but nobody was able to quench his thirst for truth.

He then commenced meditation with the aim to suffer and then realized the ultimate truth sitting under a huge banyan tree after 6 years. It was in Bodh Gaya in Bihar. He turned 35 and was enlightened. His wisdom knew no boundaries. The tree was named Bodhi Vriksha. He was very satisfied with his newly found knowledge and gave his first speech on enlightenment in Sarnath. He found the ultimate truth behind the sorrows and troubles people face in the world. It was all due to their desires and attraction to earthly things.

A couple of centuries after he died, he came to be known as the Buddha which means the enlightened one. All the teachings of Buddha were compiled in the Vinaya. His teachings were passed to the Indo-Aryan community through oral traditions.

In his lecture, he mentioned the Noble Eightfold Path to conquer desires and attain full control. The first 3 paths described how one can gain physical control. The next 2 paths showed us how to achieve the fullest mental control. The last 2 paths were described to help people attain the highest level of intellect. These paths are described as Right Understanding, Right Thought, Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness, and Right Concentration synchronously.

The title “Buddha” was used by several ancient groups and for each group, it had its meaning. The word Buddhism refers to a living being who has got enlightened and just got up from his phase of ignorance. Buddhism believes that there have been Buddhas in the past before Gautam Buddha and there will be Buddhas in the future also. The Buddhists celebrate the life of Gautam Buddha starting from his birth to his enlightenment and passage into Nirvana stage as well.

In his life, Gautam Buddha had done a lot of spiritual things and lived his life by going through so much. Each suffering and each liberation of his has turned into teachings.

Finding Liberation: the ultimate motive of our soul is to find liberation.

The Noble truth of Life: for salvation, you need to know about all the four Noble truths of your life.

Suffering is not a Joke:   each suffering leads you to experience a new you.

There are noble eightfold paths that you need to follow.

Death is final, the one who has taken birth will die surely and everything in life is impermeable, you are not going to have anything that will be permanent so focus on salvation rather than pleasing others.

He preached that only sacrifice cannot make a person happy and free from all the bonds he has in the world. He also defined the final goal as Nirvana. Even to this day, his preaching finds meaning and can be related to our sorrows. According to his teachings, the right way of thinking, acting, living, concentrating, etc can lead to such a state. He never asked anyone to sacrifice or pray all day to achieve such a state. This is not the way to gain such a mindful state.

He didn’t mention any god or an almighty controlling our fate. His teachings are the best philosophical thoughts one can follow. Gautam Buddha was his new name after gaining Nirvana and knowing the truth. He was sure that no religion can lead to Nirvana. Only the Noble Eightfold Path can be the way to achieve such a state. He breathed last in 483 BC in Kushinagar, now situated in Uttar Pradesh and his life became an inspiration.

Even after being in a happy family with a loving wife and son, he left his royal kingdom in search of the truth. No one was able to satisfy him with knowledge. He then attained his enlightenment under a banyan tree in Bodh Gaya. He described the Noble Eightfold Path that everyone should follow to get rid of sorrow and unhappiness. He died in 483 BC but his preaching is found to be still relevant to this date. This tells us how Siddhartha became Gautam Buddha. Once, Gautam Buddha had an opportunity to see an old man and a dead body. Gautam Buddha began to think that there is no way of liberating him from human suffering. Then Gautam Buddha made human welfare the only goal of his life. He left his wife, Yashodhara and son Rahul in sleep, and went into the forest, where they received philosophy by meditation and called ‘Buddha’.

After this incident, Gautam would normally sit under the tree of Peepal which was later named Bodhi tree, Bodh Gaya, India. It is said that sitting in meditation only used to search Gautama Satya in meditation. Spending 49 days in meditation, at the age of 35, it is said that he had attained the knowledge. And since then they have become famous by the name of ‘Buddha’ and they were awakened only after performing strict penance according to the people.

While awakening, he came to know that he has hidden four great truths, including truth from liberation to world, rebirth, life and death. Later, this knowledge was adopted by the people of Buddha religion, in which the Buddha was also called the God of meditation, according to him, Buddha is the easiest way to get salvation.

According to him, salvation is to destroy desire, hatred and ignorance, who carry on the cycle of suffering and rebirth. According to them, salvation means the end of this world, where we become free from all personal bondage and only remain intellectually alert. At such times only the elements of Buddha can come in our work.

According to Buddha religion, if a person walks on the path of truth, then he can be away from those desires, which leads to sadness. That which is permanent and permanent, is also devastating. The one who looks great, his fall is sure. Where there is a coincidence, there is destruction. Where there is birth there is death too. While assimilating such great true ideas, Gautam Buddha had established Buddhism, which is today one of the major religions of the world.

Gautam Buddha established an innate human religion by refuting the current rudiments and superstitions. He said that life should live a holy and simple life by following the restraint, truth and non-violence.

He emphasized on adding sadhak of ‘samyak’ with karmas, behave and knowledge, because no one can give ‘extreme’ peace. Similarly, liberation and death can be freed from fear and it is called as Nirvana.

The path of Nirvana, which he suggested to humans, is still relevant as it was two and a half thousand years ago, in order to find a path to the liberation of humanity; he himself renounced the royal hospitality and took many physical mechanisms.

Deep contemplation – after meditation and rigorous cultivation, he got the following philosophy of the Bodhi tree in Gaya (Bihar). And he gave the first five disciples instructions.

दुखाइ अपरिहर्ये छ तर दु:ख रोजाई हो

रिसाउनु भनेको आफुले बिष खाएर अरु मर्ने आश गर्नु हो 

दुर्वचन पशुहरुलाई समेत अप्रिय लाग्दछ ।

दुष्ट मन भएको मानिसले दुष्ट बोली बोल्छ, शुद्ध मन भएकोले शुद्धी बोली बोल्छ ।

मानिसले मानिसप्रति गरिने अनुचित व्यवहारको परिणत नै मानिसको दुःख हो र दुःखको नाश केवल धर्मले मात्र गर्न सकिन्छ ।

संसारमा दुःख छ भन्ने जानेर पनि सन्यासी झै हातमाथि हात राखी संसारमा जे जस्तो भइराखेको छ, त्यतिकै हुन दिइरहनु अस्वभनीय कुरा हो ।

जीवन ऐर्श्वर्य र अधिकारप्रतिको आशक्तिले मानिसलाई दास बनाउँछ ।

दानको अर्थ हो सटटामा कुनै पनि किसिमको स्वार्थपूर्ण आशा नगरिकन अर्काको भलाइको निमित्त आफनो सम्पत्तिको मात्र होइन, आफनो रगत, शरीरका अंगहरु, आफनो प्राणसमेत बलिदान दिनु ।

असल हृदय भएकालाई अलिकति व्यापक परिश्रम पनि कल्याणकारी नै हुन्छ ।

तिमी मेरो कुरा परीक्षण गरेर मात्र स्वीकार गर ।

नैतिकता नै धर्म हो, धर्म नै नैतिकता हो, नैतिकता छैन भने धर्म पनि छैन, नैतिकता नै धर्मको साररुप हो ।

वृद्धहरुलाई श्रद्धा तथा आदर गर्नुपर्दछ, यस्तो गर्नेलाई धेरै पुरस्कार तथा समृद्धि प्राप्त हुन्छ, छोरा छोरीले आमा बाबुलाई सहारा दिनुपर्दछ र आफना आमाबुवालाई जहिले पनि सम्मान गर्नुपर्दछ ।

सुख चाहनेले सधैं आफूलाई सन्तुष्ट राख्नु पर्दछ, सन्तोष नै सबभन्दा ठूलो सुख हो ।

मानसिक दुःख बराबर अर्को दुःखदायी घाउ हुँदैन ।

घृणा मनुष्यका लागि हानिकारक छ, आफूभित्र घृणालाई स्थान दिने मानिस आफ्नो नियन्त्रण छोड्छ ।

दयाको पात्र त्यही व्यक्ति हुन्छ, जो विशाल धनराशीबीच डुबेर पनि तृष्णामा बसिभूत हुन्छ ।

संसारबाट भाग्नु आवश्यक छैन तर संसारलाई नै बदलेर श्रेष्ठतर बनाउनु परम,’ आवश्यक छ ।

संसारलाईर् इश्वरले बनाएको हो भने कसैले प्रमाणित गर्न सक्दैन, संसारको विकास भएको हो, निर्माण भएको होइन ।

खराबको संगतमा बस्ने मानिस खराब नै हुन जान्छ, जस्तै दर्ुगन्धयुक्त पदार्थ ग्रहण गर्ने मानिस स्वयं गनाउन थाल्छ ।

नत अराजकतामा स्वतन्त्रता हुन्छ, नत निरंकुशतामा नै स्वतन्त्रता हुन्छ, केवल स्वतन्त्रता चाहनेले धर्म अवलम्बन गर्नु अनिवार्य हुन्छ ।

बुद्धिमान् कहिल्यै डराउँदैन, उसले आफ्नो बल चिन्दछ र भयभीत हुँदैनस त्यस्तै, उसले आफ्नो कमजोरीहरू पनि चिन्दछ र हुन नसक्ने कुरा गर्न आट्दैन ।

चाहे मानिस एक्लै बस्न किन नपरोस्, उसले उचित मार्गबाट विचलित नहुने साहस गर्नुपर्दछ ।

जसले धर्मको अनुसरण गर्दछ उपदेशको पालना गर्दछ, त्यसको मनमा शान्ति हुन्छ, उसलाई आनन्द प्राप्त हुन्छ ।

अनुशरणले यस जीवनमा र पुनर्जीवनम समेत असल कुरा ल्याउँछ ।

असल र बुद्धिमानले आउने जीवनमा सुख प्राप्त गर्दछन्, दुष्ट तथा मूर्ख सधैका लागि मर्दछन् ।

जो अरूको अवगुणहरूको वयान गर्दछ, त्यो आफ्नै अवगुण प्रकट गर्दछ ।

लाभ-हानि, जसअपजस, सुख-दुःख, गुण-अवगुणहरू संसारका हरेक वस्तुसँग आबद्ध भएका हुन्छन् । त्यसकारण मानिसहरू न त सधै सुखी रहन्छन्, नत सधैं दुःखी नै रहन्छन् ।

मानिस जन्मदै न त निधारमा तिलक लगाएर आएको हुन्छ, न त यज्ञोपवीत धारणा गरेर जसले सत्कार्य गर्दछ, ऊ द्विज हुन्छ र जसले कुकर्म गर्दछ ऊ नीच हुन्छ ।

अविद्याको अर्थ हो, मानिसले दुःख जान्न नसक्नु, दुःख निरोधको उपाय जान्न नसक्नु र सत्यलाई नबुझनु नै हो ।

कुनै पनि कुराको सत्यता स्वीकार गर्न केही न केही प्रमाण हुनुपर्छ, ती प्रमाणहरु दुर्इ प्रकारका छन्, एक प्रत्यक्ष र अर्को प्रत्यक्ष ।

पीडितहरुले आफनो परिस्थिति बदल्ने प्रयास गर्नुपर्छ, उनीहरुले कष्टबाट उपेक्षित भएर बस्नुभन्दा उत्साहपूर्वक परिस्थितिलाई बदल्ने प्रयास गर्नुपर्छ ।

जसले सबैभन्दा बढी पुण्य प्राप्त गर्छ त्यही व्यक्ति धर्मको अधिकारी हुन्छ ।

तिमी आफूलाई हानी हुने काम गर्दैनौ, त्यस्तै अरूलाई पनि हानी हुने काम नगर्नू ।

तिमी अरू मानिस जस्तै हौ, तिमीलाई डर र पीडा भएझै अरूलाई पनि हुन्छ । तर्सथ अरूलाई कष्ट हुने काम नगर ।

मार्ग विरोधी प्रकृतिहरूलाई रोक्नु, उत्पत्ति भएसकेको भए पनि खराब चित्त प्रवृत्तिलाई दबाउनु आदि संयक व्यायामका उद्देश्यहरू हुन् ।

आफ्नो कुरा अनुसारको काम नगर्ने मान्छेको वचन देख्नेलाई राम्रो तर बास्नाहीन फूलजस्तै हो ।

सबै वस्तुहरू मानिसका दुःख हरण गर्ने साधन हुन्, बुद्धिमान् मानिसले दुःखहरण गर्ने ती सबै साधनहरूलाई भोग्यवस्तु मानेर भोग्नु हुँदैन ।

सत्य मात्र बोल्नु, असत्य नबोल्नु, चुक्ली लाउनु हुँदैन, दोषबाट बच्नुपर्छ, कसैसँग पनि गाली र कठोर वचन र व्यवहार नगर्नु, बुद्धिसंगत र्सार्थक र स्वउद्देश्य वाणी हुनुपर्छ ।

जीवनका महान् कुराहरूको विचार गर्नाले महानता प्राप्त हुन्छ, असल हुनको लागि मानिसको असल कुरा विचार गर्नुपर्छ । गौतम बुद्ध

आफ्ना विचारहरूलाई खराब काम हुन नपाओस् भन्ने कुरामा सजग राखौं । किनभने हामी जस्तो रोप्छौं, त्यस्तै टिप्छौं । त्यसैले आफ्नो विचारलाई उच्च बनाउनोस्, श्रद्धा र दृढतालाई अपनाउनुहोस् ।

सदाचारीविनाको विद्या बढी खतरनाक हुन्छ, जो विद्वान छ, त्यसले सदाचारी पनि हुनुपर्छ ।

त्यो मानिस नै विद्वान हो, जो बहुजन हिताय, बहुजन सुखायमा लागेको हुन्छ, सुन्दर हितकर पथको अनुगामी हुन्छ ।

विश्वासनीय मानिसले बोलेको कुरा मात्र ठीक हो भनी जान्नुपर्छ, विश्वासको अर्थ हो निर्दोषिता ।

बुद्धिमान् मानिसले अति नै प्रिय भए पनि आफ्नो स्वजनसँग विछोड हुँदा दुःखी हुनुपर्दैन ।

सबै प्रिय वस्तु र प्रियजनहरूसँग एक दिन अवस्य नै वियोग हुन्छ ।

प्राणीका जति पनि क्रियाकलापहरू हुन्छन्, तिनीहरू विज्ञानद्वारा अथवा विज्ञानको परिणामस्वरूप पूरा हुन्छन् ।

काम विषयले डसेपछि संयमी मानिसको सुख हरण हुन जान्छ, काम विषय उसको विनाशको कारण बन्न जान्छ ।

वेद पनि विशुद्ध छैन, त्यसैले हरेक चीजको परीक्षण र पुनःपरीक्षण भएजस्तै वेदको पनि परीक्षण भइरहनुपर्छ ।

कोही व्यक्ति भलो, कुभलोमा आशंकित हुन्छ भने उसले आफ्नो मनलाई भलाइमा नै लगाइराख्नुपर्छ ।

नैतिक भ्रष्टताले गर्दा मानवताले दुःखी हुन नपरोस् ।

भीक्षु भनेको गृह त्याग गरी पर्रि्राजक बनेकाहरू हुन्, भीक्षु भन्नु नै व्रत हो ।

भीक्षु त्यो हो जो संयममा रहन्छ, जो सन्तुष्ट छ र एकान्तमा रहेर आफैमा आनन्दित रहन्छ ।

जुन व्यक्ति भीक्षाजीवित हुन्छ, उसलाई यस लोकमा परम सुख प्राप्त हुन्छ, सम्पूर्ण शान्ति प्राप्त हुन्छ, भविष्य जीवनको निमित्त पनि उसका दुःखहरू हराएर जान्छन् ।

शरीरलाई स्थिर बनाइराख्न, हिंसाबाट जोगिएर बस्न तथा असल जीवन व्यतित गर्न भोजन ग्रहण गर्नुपर्छ ।

जुन मतलाई तिमी स्वीकार्न चाहन्छौं, तिनीहरू हितकर छन् वा छैनन्, निन्दनीय छन् वा छैनन् जस्ता कुराहरूमा विचार पु-याउनुपर्छ ।

मानिस आफ्नो विचारको गुणनफल हो, ऊ जे हो, उसको आदर्श रुचि, अरुचि, ऊ स्वयं विचराको उत्पत्ति हो ।

मानिस निरन्तर परिवर्तनशील छ, निरन्तर सर्म्बर्द्धनशील छ र मानिसको उत्पत्ति अनुवंशिक हो ।

मानिसले बुद्धिमान र असलमध्येबाट मित्र छान्नुपर्दछ खराब मित्रले मानिसलाई बिगार्दछ, मित्र त्यस्तो हुनुपर्दछ जसले बुद्धिमानीका साथ निन्दा गर्दछ किनभने मानिसलाई चाहिने सल्लाह त्यही हो ।

मित्र भनेको गुप्त खानी हो र मित्रलाई दाजुभाइ जस्तै ठान्नुपर्दछ ।

प्रतिकूल परिस्थितिमा पनि मित्रता त्याग नगर्ने व्यक्ति नै सच्चा मित्र हुन् ।

मित्रको तीन लक्षण हुन्छन् -१) हित नगर्ने कामबाट बचाउनुस -२) हितकर काममा लगाउनु, -३) विपत्तिमा साथ नछोड्नु ।

मूर्खता बराबर घोच्ने तिखो तिर अर्को हुँदैन ।

जबसम्म संसारमा प्राणीहरूको मुक्ति हुँदैन, तबसम्म म आफ्नो मुक्तिको आकांक्षा गर्दिन ।

संसारमा सबैको मृत्यु हुन्छ, यसबाट कोही पनि उम्कन सक्दैन । गौतम बुद्ध अपकीर्ति नै मृत्यु हो ।

मैत्रीको मतलब हो, सबै प्राणीप्रति भातृ भावना रहनु, मित्रहरूप्रति मात्र होइन, शत्रुहरूप्रति पनि र सबै प्राणीहरूप्रति भातृभावना रहनु ।

तिमीले मैत्रीको अभ्यास गरिराख्यौ भने कसैले पनि तिमीसँग अप्रीतिकन व्यवहार गरे पनि तिम्रो मन विचलिन हुँदैन ।

बुद्धिमान्ले ज्ञान बुद्धि प्राप्त गर्न प्रकाशलाई प्रयोगमा ल्याएर लगातार सत्यको मार्गतिर अग्रसर भइरहन्छ ।

सम्पत्ति उसैको र्सार्थक हुन्छ, जसलाई प्राप्त गरेपछि त्यसले आफ्नो मित्रता र थर्मको निमित्त उपयोग गर्दछ ।

सांसारिक धन सम्पत्ति अनित्य र नाशवान् छन्, धर्मरूपी धन नित्य र अनन्त छन् ।

समाधी भनेको चित्तको एकाग्रहता हो, यसले गतिशील स्वउत्पन्न अवस्थामा पु-याउँछ ।

500 Words Essay on GAUTAM BUDDHA and Buddhism

Gautam Buddha was one of the greatest religious teachers of the world. He gave the message of truth, peace, humanity and equality. His teachings and sayings became the basis of Buddhism, one of world’s leading religions which are followed in some countries like Japan, China, and Burma etc.

He is believed to have been born in Lumbini forests in Nepalese Terai in the sixth century B.C. Before he became the Buddha (the Enlightened), he was called Siddharth. His father’s name was Suddhodana, who was the ruler of Kapilvastu. His mother’s name was Maya Devi, who died soon after Siddharth’s birth.

Siddharth was a child with a contemplative bent of mind. He was inclined towards meditation and spiritual pursuits much against the wishes of his father. His father feared that Siddharth might leave home, and so, kept tried to insulate him from the harsh realities of the world outside by keeping him inside the palace all the time.

He even arranged his marriage with a beautiful princess Yashodhara when he was 18. They had a son named Rahul. But all these could not change the mind of young Siddharth.

The Buddhist traditions mention that when Siddharth encountered an old man, a sick person and a dead body, he realized how short lived is worldly passions and pleasures. Soon after he left his family and Kingdom and went into the forest in search of peace and truth. He wandered from place to place to gain knowledge. He met many scholars and saints but he was not satisfied.

At last he started hard meditation bearing great physical suffering. After six years of wandering and meditation Siddharth got enlightment when he was sitting in meditation under a pipal tree in the town of Ganges (Bihar).

Siddharth now got transformed into Buddha or the enlightened one at the age of the thirty five. The pipal tree under which he got Enlightment came to be known as Bodhi Vriksha.

Buddha attained what he wished for. He preached his first sermon in Sarnath, near Varanasi. He taught that the world is full of sorrows and people suffer on account of desire. Hence desires needed to be conquered by following Eightfold Path. Of these eight paths, the first three would ensure physical control, the next two ensures mental control, and the last two would ensure intellectual development.

Buddha taught that the final goal of every Buddhist is the attainment of ‘Nirvana’. ‘Nirvana’ could be attained neither by prayer nor by sacrifice. It can be achieved by right kind of living and thinking. Buddha did not speak of God and his teachings constitute more of a philosophy and system of ethics than a religion. Buddhism affirms the law of Karma by which a person’s action in life determines his status in future incarnations.

Buddhism is identified with the principles of non-violence. The Tripitika’ is a collection of Buddha’s teachings, life and philosophical discourses on the teachings and the commentaries. Buddha attained his Nirvana in Khushinagar (U.P.) in 483 B.C.
