Losing weight is a major concern today because unhealthy food and lifestyle cause more and more people to become overweight. Obesity is a global problem which is determined by two main causes, lack of physical activity and poor diet, consisting in too much fat and sugar. Many people try to lose weight but they do not succeed because they apply incorrect strategies and follow all kinds of diets that may affect their health and even cause them to gain more weight. This process is nevertheless based on simple and clear principles that may represent the basis of a healthy lifestyle. Losing weight may seem hard in the beginning but by following the steps below, you will get fit and much healthier in a short period of time.

The first step in losing weight is to start exercising. In order to do so, you must first get the approval of your physician. This is very important because many people have health problems that do not allow them to exercise and they may not even know about it. After receiving approval from your doctor, you must buy special training equipment. Look for comfortable sportswear that allows you to move freely. After buying the equipment, you must find a gym that suits your needs. It must be close to your home in order to save your time and well-equipped to fit all your needs. After finding the gym, you must choose a training program. While the instructor will help you to choose a weight losing program, it is important to go there prepared. In order to lose weight, you must choose cardio exercises. Start by walking for 30 minutes. After a few days, you may start alternate walking and running. Walk for ten minutes and then run for 4 or 5 minutes. In a few weeks, you should be able to reduce the walking time and increase the running time. The ultimate goal is to be able to run for the entire 30 minutes you spend on the treadmill.  You may also try the stepper and the bicycle, applying the same rule of increasing the effort level gradually.  While exercising three or four times per week is enough to lose weight, people who are really ambitious and want to lose weight faster may chose to go to the gym every day.  Be very careful not to exaggerate though because this may lead to important health problems, which can vary from an uncomfortable muscle pain the next day, to heart failure and death.

Changing your diet is the next important step in losing weight. This step must take place in the same time, or shortly after the beginning of the first step. First, you must stop eating fast-food, semi-prepared aliments and pizza. Next, look into your fridge and replace all fattening aliments. If the fridge is now empty, you must go shopping for healthy food. Avoid pork and cold cuts. Go for chicken, beef and fish instead. Also buy fresh vegetables and fruits.  Then, you have to learn how to prepare your healthy meals yourself. You must give up most carbs in your diet.  Introduce wholegrain bread and cereals instead and replace sweets with fruits. You must stop eating fried food and start considering grilled and boiled meat and vegetables instead.  Look on the internet for easy and fast recipes. Then, you must change your eating habits, if they are wrong .You must never skip a meal and you must include a healthy snack. A fruit or a simple yogurt is a great choice for a snack. Finally, you must respect your new diet at all times. Avoid entering fast-foods and buying sweets. Ask all your friends and relatives to help you by not eating in front of you and if this is the case, by preparing healthy meals for you. If you respect all of the above, you may lose between one and three kilograms in the first week. Always be careful however to eat enough, particularly since you are also exercising.  Starving yourself is not a good method of losing weight because it may predispose you to health problems and also, it is efficient strategy. You will end up giving up and eating even more than before.

After having completed the above steps, it is time to enlarge your knowledge on the topic. If you start the weight losing process by knowing nothing about the mechanisms that govern it (as most people), this does not mean that you have to remain in the dark.   It is important to learn everything you can about losing weight and healthy lifestyles because this will motivate you and will help you to achieve better results.   The first source of information is your physician or a nutrition specialist. You may ask him everything you want to know about nutrition, exercising and living a healthy life. However, if your weight problems are not so serious as to endanger your health, you may skip this step. The next competent source of information is your gym instructor. He may advise you in aspects concerning diet and supplements, as well as other details such as drinking enough water. Finally, the internet will provide you with an enormous source of information and will tell you everything you have to know about healthy living and losing weight. Be careful though and pick your sources of information wisely, because not all sites are reliable. For this reason, it is also advisable to double-check the information.

The weight losing process thus involves exercising, dieting and gaining knowledge on the topic. Even though in the beginning, this process may seem extremely difficult, you will see that in a very short while, it will become easy and even enjoyable. After having achieved your goal, you will discover that you are not only lighter, but also healthier and more energetic so the result is worth each second spent at the gym and in the kitchen.

Weight loss: 6 strategies for success

Follow these proven strategies to reduce your weight and boost your health.

Hundreds of fad diets, weight-loss programs and outright scams promise quick and easy weight loss. However, the foundation of successful weight loss remains a healthy, calorie-controlled diet combined with increased physical activity. For successful, long-term weight loss, you must make permanent changes in your lifestyle and health habits.

How do you make those permanent changes? Consider following these six strategies for weight-loss success.

1. Make sure you're ready

Long-term weight loss takes time and effort — and a long-term commitment. While you don't want to put off weight loss indefinitely, you should make sure you're ready to make permanent changes to eating and activity habits. Ask yourself the following questions to help you determine your readiness:

  • Am I motivated to lose weight?
  • Am I too distracted by other pressures?
  • Do I use food as a means to cope with stress?
  • Am I ready to learn or use other strategies to cope with stress?
  • Do I need other support — either from friends or professionals — to manage stress?
  • Am I willing to change eating habits?
  • Am I willing to change activity habits?
  • Do I have the time to spend on making these changes?

Talk to your doctor if you need help addressing stressors or emotions that seem like obstacles to your readiness. When you're ready, you'll find it easier to set goals, stay committed and change habits.

2. Find your inner motivation

No one else can make you lose weight. You must undertake diet and exercise changes to please yourself. What's going to give you the burning drive to stick to your weight-loss plan?

Make a list of what's important to you to help you stay motivated and focused, whether it's an upcoming vacation or better overall health. Then find a way to make sure that you can call on your motivational factors during moments of temptation. You might want to post an encouraging note to yourself on the pantry door or refrigerator, for instance.

While you have to take responsibility for your own behavior for successful weight loss, it helps to have support — of the right kind. Pick people to support you who will encourage you in positive ways, without shame, embarrassment or sabotage.

Ideally, find people who will listen to your concerns and feelings, spend time exercising with you or creating healthy menus, and share the priority you've placed on developing a healthier lifestyle. Your support group can also offer accountability, which can be a strong motivation for sticking to your weight-loss goals.

If you prefer to keep your weight-loss plans private, be accountable to yourself by having regular weigh-ins, recording your diet and exercise progress in a journal, or tracking your progress using digital tools.

3. Set realistic goals

It may seem obvious to set realistic weight-loss goals. But do you really know what's realistic? Over the long term, it's smart to aim for losing 1 to 2 pounds (0.5 to 1 kilogram) a week. Generally to lose 1 to 2 pounds a week, you need to burn 500 to 1,000 calories more than you consume each day, through a lower calorie diet and regular physical activity.

Depending on your weight, 5% of your current weight may be a realistic goal, at least for an initial goal. If you weigh 180 pounds (82 kilograms), that's 9 pounds (4 kilograms). Even this level of weight loss can help lower your risk of chronic health problems, such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

When you're setting goals, think about both process and outcome goals. "Walk every day for 30 minutes" is an example of a process goal. "Lose 10 pounds" is an example of an outcome goal. It isn't essential that you have an outcome goal, but you should set process goals because changing your habits is a key to weight loss.

4. Enjoy healthier foods

Adopting a new eating style that promotes weight loss must include lowering your total calorie intake. But decreasing calories need not mean giving up taste, satisfaction or even ease of meal preparation.

One way you can lower your calorie intake is by eating more plant-based foods — fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Strive for variety to help you achieve your goals without giving up taste or nutrition.

Get your weight loss started with these tips:

  • Eat at least four servings of vegetables and three servings of fruits daily.
  • Replace refined grains with whole grains.
  • Use modest amounts of healthy fats, such as olive oil, vegetable oils, avocados, nuts, nut butters and nut oils.
  • Cut back on sugar as much as possible, except the natural sugar in fruit.
  • Choose low-fat dairy products and lean meat and poultry in limited amounts.

5. Get active, stay active

While you can lose weight without exercise, regular physical activity plus calorie restriction can help give you the weight-loss edge. Exercise can help burn off the excess calories you can't cut through diet alone.

Exercise also offers numerous health benefits, including boosting your mood, strengthening your cardiovascular system and reducing your blood pressure. Exercise can also help in maintaining weight loss. Studies show that people who maintain their weight loss over the long term get regular physical activity.

How many calories you burn depends on the frequency, duration and intensity of your activities. One of the best ways to lose body fat is through steady aerobic exercise — such as brisk walking — for at least 30 minutes most days of the week. Some people may require more physical activity than this to lose weight and maintain that weight loss.

Any extra movement helps burn calories. Think about ways you can increase your physical activity throughout the day if you can't fit in formal exercise on a given day. For example, make several trips up and down stairs instead of using the elevator, or park at the far end of the lot when shopping.

6. Change your perspective

It's not enough to eat healthy foods and exercise for only a few weeks or even months if you want long-term, successful weight management. These habits must become a way of life. Lifestyle changes start with taking an honest look at your eating patterns and daily routine.

After assessing your personal challenges to weight loss, try working out a strategy to gradually change habits and attitudes that have sabotaged your past efforts. Then move beyond simply recognizing your challenges — plan for how you'll deal with them if you're going to succeed in losing weight once and for all.

You likely will have an occasional setback. But instead of giving up entirely after a setback, simply start fresh the next day. Remember that you're planning to change your life. It won't happen all at once. Stick to your healthy lifestyle and the results will be worth it.

Dieting: Losing Weight Without Losing Your Mind Essay

Introduction, the process, works cited.

Being healthy is of great importance to our lives, and people are constantly looking for ways to maintain good health. One condition that is detrimental to good health is obesity, which is characterized by excessive weight. This condition increases the likelihood of developing diseases and diminishes the quality of life for the person. Obesity has emerged as one of the most important issues threatening human health in modern society.

The World Health Organization reports that the prevalence of Obesity in Europe has tripled since the 1980s, and the numbers are rising even higher (par.1). Being overweight has numerous physical and psychological health consequences. It is, therefore, necessary for people to deal with obesity and maintain good health. There are many diet plans designed to assist people to quickly lose weight. These plans vary in their efficiency, health outcomes, and cost. It would be important to know how to select the most appropriate diet plan. However, there are a few general steps common to all weight loss plans.

The first step is determination and perseverance. Determination will cause someone to research on the various weight-loss strategies available. Determination and perseverance can be fostered by gaining a better understanding of the various risks associated with obesity. Head reveals that the alarming increase in the incidences of obesity in Western nations can be attributed to the lack of knowledge on the numerous adverse health impacts of obesity (1). When a person understands the risks of metabolic disease, cardiovascular complications, and premature death associated with obesity, he or she is likely to develop the determination to lose weight. A person will be prompted to seek a real solution to his/her weight problem when he/she understands that the excess weight can lead to chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension (Head 2).

It is, therefore, important to look for information on the health consequences of diabetes in order to promote determination and perseverance to lose weight. An individual can also get determination by finding a support group. A person might find it hard to faithfully follow the weight loss program on his/her own. In such a case, a support group will be beneficial since it will connect the person with other individuals that are facing the same challenges. One can join a fitness class, which will help increase the motivation to lose weight. Fitness classes provide a social support system as the person is surrounded by other people who are trying to achieve the same goal. These people support and encourage each other in their journey to acquiring healthy bodies.

The second step in the process is to increase water intake considerably in order to promote weight loss. Water consumption has numerous benefits to humans since it promotes health. Overweight people benefit from increased water intake since it reduces food consumption in addition to facilitating digestion. Research by Muckelbauer, Sarganas, Gruneis, and Muller-Nordhorn demonstrated that water consumption contributes to weight loss among dieters (1).

Consuming water before a meal reduces food consumption since the water produces a filling effect, therefore, causing the person to eat less food. Another reason why increased water intake contributes to weight loss is that people sometimes confuse thirst for hunger. They, therefore, end up consuming food that they do not need since they do not understand that they are feeling thirsty and not hungry. Regular consumption of water will ensure that this confusion does not occur therefore reducing food intake and promoting weight loss. Drinking water also facilitates obesity prevention since this is a health drink that does not contain any calories. People consume between two and three liters of liquid every day. Without consuming water, individuals are likely to consume unhealthy drinks that contain a lot of calories, such as soft drinks.

Elder declares that water consumption may also suppress sugar-sweetened beverage drinking (149). This is of significance to weight loss since the high consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages has contributed to the overweight issue in many countries.

The third step is eating healthy foods to improve the nutritional content delivered to the body and adopt healthy lifestyles. The food consumed by a person has an effect on his/her health, and it can either promote health or put someone at risk of developing certain diseases. The person trying to lose weight might have to change his habits in order to promote healthy eating. Changes might have to be made in the environment that the person is constantly in. This means that the person might need to make some changes in his work setting or home setting in order to increase the chances of succeeding in healthy eating. Maoyong and Yanhong acknowledge that making changes in eating habits is a difficulty since most unhealthy foods are appealing, and people tend to pursue immediate gratification and place short-term impulses over long-term goals (127).

It is, therefore, important to realize that the changes in eating habits do not need to be huge and sudden. A person can make small and gradual changes, and over time, the changes will have become big. Behavioral changes can be enough to start weight loss for many people. These changes include planning meals in advance and choosing meals that contain a healthy balance of vegetables, fruits, grains, low or free-fat dairy, and low-calorie proteins.

For instance, replacing fried potatoes or spicy steak with salad or steamed vegetables can reduce the number of calories in each meal. Also, preparing meals at home instead of buying junk food can decrease unhealthy calorie intake. Maoyong and Yanhong note that eating at restaurants increases the consumption of unhealthy foods (137). When dieting, the individual should plan meals in advance. This helps in the tracking of the number of calories consumed each day. A person should not skip meals, especially breakfast, since starting the day with a healthy meal keeps energy levels high. It also helps a person resist the impulse to consume high calorie snacks, such as a piece of chocolate, during the day.

The final step in the weight loss process is to engage in physical exercises such as swimming, running, walking, and bowling. There is a strong correlation between being overweight and not exercising. Barnes declares that sedentary behavior contributes to the development of obesity in people (224). There is a higher prevalence of obesity in adults who report no leisure-time physical activity compared to those who engage in some physical activity.

As such, regular physical exercise can contribute to weight loss in obese individuals. However, it should be noted that physical exercise should be combined with healthy eating. If a person exercises without eating healthily, he/she is unlikely to achieve the desired weight loss. Exercising should, therefore, be supplemented with healthy eating to ensure the best weight loss results are achieved. Engaging in physical exercises leads to weight loss since it promotes the burning of excess calories.

For example, by engaging in cardio exercises such as rowing and cycling, the individual burns many calories and improves his/her fitness. Walking can also be a good form of exercise, and it can be carried out without causing significant strain to the body. Maoyong and Yanhong declare that to promote weight loss, and a person should engage in exercise that lasts at least 30 minutes for at least five days during a typical week (132). Therefore, the person who wishes to achieve significant weight loss must engage in consistent exercising.

Obesity is a dangerous condition that is linked to numerous health consequences. Dealing with this condition is crucial to promoting good health and ensuring a good quality of life for everybody. Obesity can be defeated by undertaking a weight loss program. Losing weight is a desirable and achievable goal that anybody can achieve. However, most people assume that losing weight is a challenging endeavor that is hard to achieve. This is not the case, and by following the four steps described in this paper, a person can achieve his/her goal of weight loss. The journey to weight loss begins by having a sense of determination and insistence.

After that, the person should drink a lot of water, which will help in the reduction of the amount of food consumed. Healthy eating is crucial to weight loss, and this step should be done in order to promote weight loss and good health. Finally, the person should engage in some physical exercise. Through these steps, the seemingly tough challenge of losing weight can be overcome. The individual will be able to achieve a healthy weight and avoid all the negative consequences associated with obesity.

There are several different ways and means of losing weight. Some people have surgeries, take pills, or starve themselves to death to reach this goal. The purpose of this essay is to compare and contrast the expenses, health benefits, and the consequences of weight loss between these different methods. The best way to lose weight is to eat healthy and exercise properly, because this method is more beneficial and the results are more positive. During the last decades technology has gone so far that now people get an unexpected chance of quick change of body and health. Weight loss or bariatric surgery is regarded as a fast mean of losing weight and getting fit body. This type of weight loss is not for everybody. It is recommended only for those people who failed in any other method of losing weight or for those who have serious health issues or severe obesity. There are two types of bariatric surgery: restrictive and malabsorptive (Berdanier et al., 2008). Restrictive surgery limits food intake, by shrinking stomach size, modifying long-term eating behavior. The advantages of this procedure is that it is technically easier to carry out and fewer mineral and vitamin deficiencies are noted. The disadvantage of the surgery is the risk of increasing frequency of calorie consumption. Malabsorptive surgery limits the absorption of food by extraction or rearrangement of digestive system (Berdanier et al., 2008). The advantage of that procedure is rapid weight loss without changing eating habits. Unfortunately, this surgery exclude most of the small intestine from the digestive tract that is why less calories and nutrients are absorbed. This type of surgery is no longer recommended because it results in nutritional deficiencies (Berdanier et al., 2008). As mentioned above, weight loss surgery can be very effective in achievement of long-term weight loss. But as any other surgery it carries a lot of risks, which vary according to your age and the degree of your obesity. Another way to lose or control weight is taking weight loss drugs. They are prescribed for those people who could not lose weight with any other method. Before buying any medication the person should consult a doctor on what types of drugs are approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and have less side effects (Deeugenio et al., 2004). FDA approval shows that the drug is relatively safe. There are two types of weight loss pills: prescription drugs and over-the-counter medication. Prescription drugs, also called anti-obesity drugs are prescribed by the doctor in more severe cases to those people who have serious health problems. They increase the expenditure of energy, decrease the number of absorbed calories and suppress appetite. The side effects of this type of medication are hypertension, increased blood pressure, pulse and heart rate, dizziness, insomnia, constipation, vomiting (Deeugenio et al., 2004). Over-the-counter or nonprescription medication includes herbal products or dietary supplements. They are easy to buy, and in comparison to prescription drugs they are cheaper. OTC diet pills contain herbs that burn calories, suppress appetite, and decrease fat. The major disadvantage is that it is not monitored by the FDA. The common side effects of OTC drugs are diarrhea, liver and kidney damage, heart attack and stroke. It is important to remember that this type of weight loss is not suitable and may not work for everybody. Besides advantage of losing weight all drugs have a lot of side effects. Diet pills alone without regular physical activity and diet plan will not show any results. So the consultation of the doctor is obligatory before taking any weight loss medication. Starvation is a severe food restriction in order to lose weight. But the result of starvation is reverse. Not eating enough food slows down metabolism and stores fat. It will be impossible to lose weight whether exercising or not. The lack of calories deprive body of vitamins and minerals. Starvation may be related to fasting and dieting. Fasting is an old practice, usually used because of religious views to develop self-discipline, but if it is used to lose weight it may have irreversible consequences. Today fasting presupposes the consumption of water, juices, tea. Such detox diets may last only for a limited period of time. People fast in order to loose weight quickly, but in fact they loose only body fluid not fat. Fasting slows down a metabolic rate so when the person starts eating normal food again, all the lost weight will be regained. Another type of starvation is dieting. Today we can find so many popular and trendy diets, proposing to lose weight in several days. In fact, none of them will bring the desired effect. People who are dieting are always stressful, depressed, nervous, and angry. Any type of starvation leads to imbalance between energy take and energy expenditure. This imbalance may cause eating disorders such as anorexia, an intense fear or gaining weight that can lead to serious health problems or bulimia, a disease when eating is followed by deliberate vomiting (Deeugenio et al., 2004). The signs of bulimia are similar to those of anorexia: losing a lot of weight, refusing to eat, being depressed etc. Starvation will never bring positive results and makes it easier to gain weight. People should always remember if they lose fast, they gain fast. If you are starving you will always achieve opposite effect. In order to lose weight it is essential to eat healthy. Healthy diets should provide food from each of the following food groups: grains, vegetables and legumes, fruit, dairy, poultry, fish, eggs. In addition it also includes unsaturated fats and plenty of water. For healthy functioning body cells, blain, muscles, digestive system require water. The recommended fluid intake is 8 glasses of water, 250 ml. each, per day. While adopting healthy eating habits it is suggested to reduce the consumption of alcohol. It provides a body with 7 calorie of energy per gram. This means that if a person consumes a small amount of alcohol it can result in large calorie intake. Food provides us with calories. Exercising as well as normal body functioning burns calories. If we eat more calories than we burn, we can gain fat and weight. If we burn more calories than we eat, we can lose weight and fat. That is why suddenly lowering calories can result in many health problems. Another issue while eating healthy is consumption of macronutrients. Proteins, carbohydrates and fat are macronutrients that we cannot live without. And last but not least people should never forget about healthy snacks during the day. Healthy eating and regular exercises are interconnected. This combination can boost the level of energy so that the person feels better physically and mentally. So if a person wants to lose weight and get fit naturally, the consistency is required in every action. So the best way to lose weight and feel good and healthy about yourself is to maintain healthy lifestyle. Unlike all other methods of weight loss, embracement of healthy lifestyle has no side effects. It is the cheapest way of getting fit and it requires a small amount of free time.

Cutting down on sugars and starches is difficult, but it is perhaps the best first step. These elements are very tasty and common, but controlling your intake of these factors will significantly reduce your weight. According to Heathline, “The most important part is to cut back on sugars and starches (carbs). When you do that, your hunger levels go down and you end up eating much fewer calories. Now instead of burning carbs for energy, your body starts feeding off of stored fat” (“How to Lose Weight Fast: 3 Simple Steps, Based on Science”). It is said that within the first week of this diet, one can lose up to 10 pounds. This reflects both body fat and water weight.

Speaking of weight, it is important to lift them in order to shed some pounds. Being physically active in general helps, but lifting weights can work on body fat more intensely. According to My Fitness Pal, “Your best bet for fat loss will be to perform a combination of cardio and strength training. After all, one study in BMC Public Health found overweight and obese adults who followed a 12-week cardio and resistance-training program lost more weight than those who only did cardio” (“Can Lifting Weights Help You Lose Fat?”). Also of note is that lifting weights increases testosterone and growth hormone, which makes you lose fat easier eventually. Besides, these hormonal effects increases your good mood and promotes a more positive body image.

Like many areas of health, getting enough sleep is vital. Unsurprisingly, a lack of sleep has been connected to weight gain and unhealthy weight in general. As stated by Healthline, “People with short sleep duration tend to weigh significantly more than those who get adequate sleep. In fact, short sleep duration is one of the strongest risk factors for obesity. In one extensive review study, children and adults with short sleep duration were 89% and 55% more likely to become obese, respectively” (“10 Reasons Why Good Sleep Is Important”). As it can be seen, sleep has a large impact on our weight gain and loss. Besides, it is nice to feel well-rested.

It is also important to eat well. There is no need to starve yourself to lose weight. In fact, this is a rather unhealthy way to lose weight. It is best to eat regular meals that are focused on a low-carb diet. This way, your body will receive the nourishment it needs, and also your metabolism can be stable (“How to Lose Weight Fast: 3 Simple Steps, Based on Science”).

Furthering on the topic of metabolism, it has a significant impact on how we lose and gain weight. Eating the right foods that will increase our metabolism undoubtedly helps us to lose some pounds. Foods such as almonds, beans, berries, bone broth, celery, chia seeds, chocolate, apple cider vinegar, cinnamon, coconut oil, coffee, curry, fish, grapefruit, green tea, hot peppers and jalapenos, lean turkey, seaweed, spinach, watermelon, and water are all sources of nourishment that boosts metabolism (Monaco, Emily). Of course we should not overindulge in these foods. However, eating these items regularly will increase our metabolism and promote weight loss.

Weight loss can be a difficult journey. However, by consuming less sugars and starches, lifting weights a few times a week, getting great sleep, eating regular meals with less carbs, and increasing metabolism through the foods we take in, we can manage to lose weight and be healthy at the time. Losing weight should not be suffering, but rather a conscious decision we stick to.

Losing weight isn’t easy, but it’s not rocket science either.

Most people think it calls for some magical diet plan (it doesn’t exist), the perfect workout (doesn’t exist either), and a go-big-or-go-home mentality (it’ll work…until you plateau and burn out).

Here’s the truth: The more complicated your weight-loss plan, the more you’ll end up going round in circles, and the less likely you’ll be to stick to it and make any progress.

If you want to lose weight without losing your mind, the best thing you can do is to keep things as simple as possible.

Here’s how.

STEP 1: KNOW WHY YOU WANT TO LOSE WEIGHT

Trying to lose weight without a meaningful ‘why’ is like getting into a boat and sailing off into the open seas without a destination or a map in mind — your chances of getting lost are high, and when the waters get rough, you’ll likely to want (and need) to turn back.

Without a deeply personal and meaningful ‘why’, you’re likely trying to lose weight because of external reasons like wanting to fit in, checking off certain ‘shoulds’ (like pressure from a partner or your doctor), or just because everyone around you is doing it.

Whenever I think about creating change that calls for long-term commitment, I do the five ‘why’s’ exercise, which basically involves asking myself why I want to do something five times until I get to my core motivation.

For example:

Q: What do you want to accomplish?

A: I want to lose 60 pounds.

Q: Why do you want to lose 60 pounds?

A:   Because I want to feel healthier.

Q: Why do you want to feel healthier?

A: So I can have more energy.

Q: Why do you want to have more energy?

A: So I can spend more time playing with my kids.

Q: Why do you want to spend more time playing with your kids?

A: Because I don’t want to miss out on the chance to have more time with them

Q: Why don’t you want to miss out on the chance to be with your kids more?

A: Because I’m getting older, life is short and I don’t know how long I’ll be around for, especially if I’m not healthy.

Having this compelling reason in place will help keep you anchored and less likely to question your decision, yourself, and how you’re going about reaching for your goal when things get tough.

What’s your big why?

STEP 2: REMEMBER THAT YOU’RE HUMAN

As a human, you’re inherently flawed, and will slip up.

Or feel like giving up at some point, all throughout your weight-loss journey.

It’s expected and it’s OK — I’m here to tell you that you don’t need to be perfect or get things right 100% of the time to make progress .

STEP 3: PRACTICE SELF-COMPASSION

You’re more likely to be cruel to yourself than you are to others, and this tendency can be obvious in the way you talk to yourself.

Self-talk like the quick and casual “what a loser” you mutter under your breath when you have an awkward moment with a colleague or even the constant “you’re so fat and lazy” you say to the person in the mirror when you miss a workout.

These may seem inconsequential and harmless, especially since you’re not hurting anyone else, but they gradually chip away at your self-worth every time you do it.

Being kind to yourself, on the other hand, can have the opposite effect.

By giving ourselves unconditional kindness, we avoid destructive patterns of fear, negativity, and isolation, says Dr. Kristin Neff, the author of Self-Compassion: The Power Of Being Kind To Yourself

At the same time, she adds, self-compassion fosters positive mind states such as happiness and optimism — the mental state you’d want to be in when you’re tackling something that takes time, patience, and resilience like losing weight and keeping it off.

STEP 4: CHECK IN WITH YOUR DOCTOR

Can’t seem to lose weight no matter how hard you try?

While what and how much you eat matters, there may be other factors contributing to your weight gain (or lack of weight loss).

Certain medications that you’re taking, like that for depression, epilepsy, birth control, and high blood pressure can encourage weight gain, making weight loss an uphill struggle.

Speaking to your doctor can help you pinpoint the source of your struggle to lose weight and your next steps to figuring out possible solutions.

STEP 5: GET CLEAR ABOUT THE CHANGES YOU WANT TO MAKE

Once you’re certain about why you want to lose weight, you’ll need to get crystal clear about how you’re going to do it.

Whether it’s going on a specific diet temporarily or changing your approach to food for the long haul, forging ahead on a planned path that you’re willing, able, and committed to following will help prevent doubt, uncertainty, or confusion from creeping in down the line.

STEP 6: FORGET ABOUT COUNTING CALORIES AND EATING CLEAN

Counting calories and eating clean may sound logical at first, but relying on these external tactics to lose weight doesn’t work for everyone for a simple reason: It bypasses the crucial step of learning to listen to your body and giving it what it needs.

The other reason these strategies can backfire is that they require tremendous amounts of willpower, which is an easily-depleted internal resource.

And when you’re running on an empty willpower tank, you’re more likely to make decisions that conflict with your goal — outcomes that make you feel like a failure because you’re not able to ‘stick with it’.

When it comes to losing weight and keeping it off, you’re better off looking within for answers that feel right for you, not what everyone else is doing.

STEP 7: STOP WEIGHING YOURSELF DAILY

Stepping on a weighing scale can be maddening, especially if you’re doing it every day — one day you’re up, the next day you’re down, and on other days, nothing’s changed.

Before you know it, you’re obsessing over what you could’ve done differently that day, taking extreme measures like eating less and exercising more or feeling tempted to take that shiny new diet for a spin.

Rather than using only a scale to measure your progress, try focusing on other things like your energy level, how your clothes fit and how much more confident you’re beginning to feel by being consistent with your habits.

STEP 8: DON’T BE AFRAID OF CARBS AND FAT

One of the biggest misconceptions when it comes to nutrition is that carbs and fat make you well, fat.

The truth is, they don’t — eating too many calories consistently makes you fat.

In fact, your body needs carbohydrates and fat to function properly.

Very simplistically, carbs fuel your muscles, brain, and just about every bodily function in your body that requires energy, while fat is an essential building block of your cells and hormones; they also help cushion and protect your internal organs.

Yet, carbs and fat are the first to go on the chopping block when someone goes on a diet because it’s so easy to eat them in excess.

Your best bet when it comes to keeping your sanity intact while trying to lose weight is this: Eat both in moderate portions that allow your body to thrive, instead of having them sent to ‘storage’ (and you, gaining weight) or encouraging your body to hold on to fat, which is what happens when you go on a restrictive diet.

STEP 9: EAT MOSTLY FRESH, WHOLE FOODS

When losing weight is your goal, moderation and consistency are your best friends.

The best foods to eat for weight loss are those that are packed with fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Foods that are rich in these nutrients — fruits , vegetables , potatoes , beans , and whole grains — are also the ones that we don’t tend to binge on or overeat (ever heard of someone bingeing on apples?), making it easier to eat healthily, and in moderation more consistently.

STEP 10: LEARN HOW TO LISTEN TO YOUR BODY

Just like having a big ‘why’ in place to guide you, combining a sustainable nutrition strategy with the ability to eat mindfully or intuitively (or both) can help tremendously in keeping you in a healthy mental state throughout your weight-loss journey.

Even though mindful and intuitive eating are not geared towards weight loss, their focus on food and physical awareness, as well as your mental health can set you up for a much healthier approach to it.

How to Lose Weight Without Losing Your Mind. Weight loss is a major preoccupation with young girls and women in contemporary times. It is largely the result of the unrealistic depictions of the ideal feminine figure in the media. Pencil slim models become figure role models for young girls. Peer pressure engenders the fear of ridicule, and the desire to conform to the generally accepted standards of weight. While obesity is definitely a health hazard which is to be avoided, weight loss can also lead to adverse physical and psychological health effects.

Bulimia and anorexia nervosa are examples of psychological eating disorders which are the direct consequences of the obsession with weight loss. However, it is possible to lose weight without any negative psychological or physical consequences. The healthy way to weight loss is through an intelligent regimen of diet and exercise and a positive attitude. Diet is the crucial factor in weight control and loss. A healthy eating plan will do wonders for weight loss, while maintaining optimum health.

All the essential food groups -carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals and vitamins, must be included in the quantities required to maintain physical health. A little thought in reducing unnecessary calories is all it takes. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, low in saturated fats and sugars, and including lean meat, poultry, fish and nuts is tailored for weight loss. Processed and fast foods and carbonated beverages are high in calories and poor in nutrition. Controlling portion sizes is another intelligent tactic in weight loss.

A balanced diet, with adequate nutrition, is essential to maintain good health. Exercise contributes to weight loss and to improved physical and mental well-being. Physical activity burns calories. At the same time, exercise also helps to manage or prevent health conditions and diseases. It increases muscle strength and boosts energy levels. It is a great stress-buster and induces a sense of well-being. Many people reject exercise, largely due to a lack of motivation or sheer laziness, and opt to lose weight by fasting and fad eating.

This does not work, as weight loss achieved through these means is temporary and the pounds pile on again. Loss of weight through exercise is permanent and healthy.A healthy attitude towards weight is very important. It is first essential to determine if weight loss is required at all. This can be done by using the body mass index, which is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. If the BMI falls within the normal weight range, it is unnecessary to consider losing weight. Unrealistic ideals of weight should be avoided.

Above all, one should realize that physical appearance and weight are not the determining factors in the development of self-esteem. Cultivating interpersonal relationships, academic and extra-curricular achievements, and nurturing special skills are more likely to contribute to peer acceptance than a thin figure.Weight loss can be achieved without adverse physical and psychological effects. A balanced diet, coupled with physical activity, helps in weight loss and improves health. Moderation is the key in food habits.

Regular meal timings also contribute to weight management. Physical activity should be made an integral part of the daily routine. Exercise has the two-fold advantage of helping in weight loss and improving health. Finally, a healthy attitude towards one’s weight is very important. By eating healthy, exercising regularly and having a realistic attitude towards one’s weight, it is possible to lose weight without losing one’s mind.

Secondly, and can’t express this enough, keep oving. I’m certainly not saying to try and run a marathon your first week. What I’m saying is that every step counts. Keep your body active. The goal here is to burn more than you consume. Your body is a machine; it’s an amazing thing. Once you get your metabolism running you will continue to burn calories even as you sleep!

It needs fuel to run. However, too much intake, and not enough burning, causes the excess weight. Walking is a good place to start. If you park a little bit further away from the front door, start taking the stairs up to your office, or other things to get you moving a little ore, you can slowly progress to walking around the block, etc. Thirdly, remember your body needs premium fuel. You should be eating good calories such as high protein, low fat, low carbohydrate foods.

Fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and fish are always a safe bet. You want your metabolism to kick it up a notch, but stuffing it full of greasy or sugary foods will only bog you down. Try to start having five to six smaller meals a day, rather than the three big ones. This will keep your metabolism running. You need to flush and hydrate your engine by drinking plenty of water. The ecommended amount suggested is at least eight glasses a day. Lastly, the main thing to remember is that you must start thinking healthy too.

Start taking care of yourself better and give your body the rest it needs. It’s recommended that you get at least eight hours of sleep a night. Start choosing better foods, and healthier snacks. Keep your body moving. It’s not going to happen overnight, but you will start to feel better. Once you Start to feel better, it will all become easier. It will become a habit and be second nature to you. Be patient, and keep the course. Every little change makes a difference to becoming a healthier you.

Ask Amy: Mom frets about daughter’s alcoholism

how to lose weight process essay

Dear Amy: I have a 49-year-old daughter who is an elementary school teacher. She became an alcoholic during covid. She has a master’s degree, a beautiful home, and a partner of nine years. She will lose it all, due to her drinking.

She won’t go to AA, and I have suggested inpatient rehab — to no avail. It is breaking my heart. Her father died from cirrhosis of the liver due to alcoholism at 57, and I’m scared I will lose her, too. She has a twin sister and a brother.

Do you have any suggestions besides Al-Anon?

— Scared Mom

Scared: Your daughter is aware of the worst-case outcome if her addiction spirals, untreated, and if she is unable to attain and maintain sobriety. She knows this because she has felt the consequences and the loss from end-stage alcoholism. Your whole family has had real-life exposure to the danger of this addiction. But she is an addict.

Aside from therapy and Al-Anon (or another “friends and family” support program), my suggestion is to love your daughter through this. Maintain frequent contact, spend time together, and maintain your relationship as well as you can, aside from her addiction. Offer her a judgment-neutral safe harbor so she won’t become isolated, and encourage her to seek treatment without letting her alcoholism become her primary identity in your relationship. Those are some things you can do for her.

For your own sake, you should maintain some boundaries. Don’t serve alcohol to her in your home. Don’t make excuses for her. Don’t let her alcoholism run your life. Offer to support her recovery, but don’t enable her addiction. Read, or reread, “Codependent No More: How to Stop Controlling Others and Start Caring for Yourself,” by Melody Beattie (2022, Hazelden).

Dear Amy: My husband is a wonderful man. We’ve been married more than 40 years. He has children who are now in their 50s from a previous marriage, and we all get along great.

His two daughters are quite overweight. He wants to say something to them and perhaps incentivize them to lose weight by offering to pay for any remedies to get their weight-loss process going. I too have had a weight problem and have slowly lost 50 pounds over the past 10 years. I’ve been hoping to lead by example.

I think he’s making a mistake to bring weight up to his girls. But he says he’s their father and he needs to approach them for their health’s sake. What do you think?

— Wondering

Wondering: My standard reaction to this sort of question is always the same: Does your husband imagine that his adult daughters don’t know that they are overweight? We are surrounded by images of thinness and the shame of fatness. Weight loss remedies and now drugs like Ozempic are in the news every day. And yet an estimated 72 percent of Americans over the age of 20 are overweight or obese. As you know from your own experience, obesity is a lifelong social, personal, and health challenge.

Overall, obesity has been so stigmatized that, along with the stigma, it has been considered a taboo topic to discuss — because discussing it often highlights the pain and shame that some people with obesity internalize. This is a tough topic to bring up, but if your husband can do so in a loving, supportive and nonjudgmental way, he could try.

As someone who has fought your own battle with obesity, perhaps your husband could rehearse a conversation with you. Maybe it’s time to discuss obesity as a disease, instead of a character flaw.

Dear Amy: “ Puzzled Parents ” insisted that their daughter had to get As and Bs in college. I think you were off-base in calling this rule “dumb.”

College is ridiculously expensive. We told our daughters: “If I am getting out of bed every morning to earn money to pay your tuition, you are getting out of bed to go to class and get at least a B. Or you will foot that bill.” All four of our daughters were held to this standard. Not all of them believed us until they were due to pay their loans.

The thing is, college isn’t for everyone. And college isn’t for everyone aged 18. After a year, if the child/adult isn’t sure she can get good grades, she should be examining other life choices and education. These parents are not dumb or wrong, but trying to raise a responsible person.
