Call for a Replacement Chapter on Race:
The Routledge Research Companion to Toni Morrison
Editor: Maureen E. Ruprecht Fadem, CUNY
This is a call for chapter proposals for The Routledge Research Companion to Toni Morrison . This companion text is intended for a scholarly audience and as support for newer Morrison scholars as they approach their research.
Each chapter of the book has a dual function: to offer a new reading of Morrison and to review the Morrison scholarship in whatever general terrain the chapter falls within:
1) Different from some companion texts, the Routledge Research Companion series publishes cutting-edge research rather than (mostly) secondary material. The secondary nature of such a companion—that it informs readers about scholarly trends and history or generally accepted understandings of an author and her work—is, in this case, to be built into each chapter. Each chapter is to point the way forward in terms of new directions in the study, interpretation, and theorization of Morrison’s oeuvre and, they are to review, in a thoroughgoing manner, existing scholarship on the topic area or theme of the chapter, to fill out the picture in terms of where and what Morrison studies has been, what scholars have been thinking, writing, and arguing since she started publishing through to today.
2) Largely what we want to accomplish here is to tell the history of Morrison studies, through those reviews, and importantly to create a vision for it going forward, for the 21st Century. That is, to think beyond some of the more or less entrenched, perhaps restrictive, borders around the reception and interpretation of Morrison, some of the givens. How do we think beyond those limits or outside accustomed responses to Morrison? How create new and fruitful passages, meanings, readings, new knowledges inspired by the work of this African American woman writer and thinker, also a universally celebrated Nobel Laureate?
At this point, because I already have a set of very good chapters, I am ONLY looking for proposals in the area of: Toni Morrison and Race / racism / antiracism
A few additional notes... Importantly, any chapter of this collection should not be restricted to a single work by Morrison; all should work with multiple texts from the oeuvre. And, each chapter of the book is eligible for Open Access, for those interested in that or whose universities encourage it. Open Access can mean greater exposure, both for the book and for the individual scholar's contribution.
Your one-page proposal is due by 7/15/24, including a Bio and being sure to make the methodology clear: where, how, in what ways does your chapter enter and fit into the conversation on Morrison on your topic, what you are innovating or primarily responding to; this should be clear as well as some of the theoretical scaffolding for chapter. (This could either be a separate statement, a working bibliography, or simply made clear through the content of your proposal.)
Email it to: [email protected] by 7/15/24. The full chapter will be due 8/30/24, six weeks later at the end of the summer. Thank you for your consideration!

Maureen Ruprecht Fadem (she/her) is Professor of English at CUNY-Kingsborough and a postcolonial and gender studies scholar. She works on contemporary Irish literature, mostly from the North, African diaspora literature, and global literatures of partition: texts representing partitions arising out of British colonial histories. Her research looks at the poetics of conflict, trauma, and silence in poetry and narrative, at political justice, especially reparations, and at race and gender justice. Maureen’s monograph Silence and Articulacy in the Poetry of Medbh McGuckian was brought out in 2020 by Rowman and Littlefield. In 2021, Routledge published two of her books: Objects and Intertexts in Toni Morrison’s ‘Beloved’: The Case for Reparations , and the co-edited collection The Economics of Empire . She recently brought out a journal article titled “ Architecting the Carceral State ” that looks at radical deployments of the fragment in Walter Benjamin and Medbh McGuckian ( RISE 2021), and, more recently, “‘A thing breaks beyond naming’: A Review Article on David Lloyd’s 2022 Books ”( ISR 2023). Along with writing opinion pieces for papers like Inside Higher Ed , Truthout , Common Dreams , and Mondoweiss , Maureen’s has forthcoming research including two books—the edited collection Imperial Debt (Liverpool UP, 2024) and The Routledge Companion to Toni Morrison (2025)—and two articles, a comparative look at the epistemology of empire in Joyce’s “The Dead” and a reading of Mandel's Station Eleven as a partition narrative that signals the end of capital. Maureen appears in interview, she organizes and participates in conferences, and she recently completed a two-year term on MLA’s committee on Academic Freedom ( CAFPRR ). Before entering academia, she managed a twenty-year career in the corporate world while raising her children on her own, Dr. Cynthia Fadem , a geoarchaeologist, and Brooklyn restaurateur Mike Fadem . She lives in Brooklyn.

Though the war against Hamas has been taking place in Gaza, violence has also increased in the West Bank, according to the United Nations . Israelis are broadly concerned about this: 65% say they are extremely or very concerned about increasing violence against Jews in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and 31% say the same about violence against Arabs. But Jewish and Arab Israelis differ over which group is the focus of their concern.
When it comes to Jewish settlements in the West Bank, 40% of the public say they help Israeli national security, while 35% say they hurt. An additional 21% think settlements don’t make much difference to the country’s security.
Israel has continued to plan for new West Bank settlements in recent months – a move that prompted the Biden administration to declare in February that these settlements are “illegitimate” under international law, citing a 50-year-old U.S. State Department opinion .
Israelis are divided on the effect of continuing to construct settlements in the West Bank: 40% say they help Israeli security, 35% say they hurt, and 21% say they don’t make a difference. (The remainder are unsure or decline to answer.)
Jewish Israelis are much more likely than Arab Israelis to view settlements as helping the country’s security (49% vs. 8%). Indeed, two-thirds of Israeli Arabs say these settlements hurt Israeli security – a position also taken by 26% of Israeli Jews.
Highly religious Jews in Israel tend to think that settlements contribute to the country’s security, but secular Jews are more likely to say settlements hurt security. Among self-identified Haredim (“ultra-Orthodox” Jews) and Datiim (“religious” Jews), 85% say that the continued building of settlements helps Israeli security, and 57% of Masortim (“traditional” Jews) agree.
Among Hilonim (“secular” Jews), just 21% say settlements help security, while a 47% plurality view settlements as harmful in this regard. Both Masortim and Hilonim are less likely to offer opinions on this question than Haredim or Datiim.
Israeli adults who place themselves on the ideological right are particularly likely to view settlements as helping Israel’s security (68%), while those in the center (17%) and on the left (9%) are much less likely to share this viewpoint. Among those on the left, about seven-in-ten say the continued building of Jewish settlements in the West Bank hurts Israeli security.
People who think that Israel and an independent Palestinian state can coexist peacefully are particularly likely to say that settlements hurt Israeli security (71%). Those who doubt that a way can be found for two states to coexist peacefully are much more inclined to see settlements as helping Israeli security (60%).
Among the Israeli public overall, the view that settlements enhance security has increased 13 points since we first asked this question in 2013. Over that same 11-year period, the share of Israeli Jews who think building settlements helps Israel’s security has steadily grown. The share of Israeli Arabs who agree has fluctuated a bit but has consistently stayed under 10%.
Since Oct. 7, there have been myriad reports of violence against Palestinians in the West Bank, with some of these events resulting in sanctions by the U.S. government against individual settlers accused of committing attacks. And according to an Israeli human rights group and Human Rights Watch , rates of violence and death in the West Bank are at a historic high.
There also have been reports of violence against Jewish settlers in the West Bank, and more Israelis say they are extremely or very concerned about rising violence against Jews (65%) than against Arabs (31%) in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
However, Israeli Jews and Israeli Arabs differ sharply in their assessments:
There are also ideological differences, with left-leaning Israelis 43 points more likely than right-leaning Israelis to voice concern about violence against Arabs – and 20 points less likely to voice concerns about violence against Jews.
Survey respondents who say Jewish settlements help Israeli security are significantly more concerned about rising violence against Jews when compared with those who think settlements hurt security (75% vs. 56%). But those who see settlements as helping security are less concerned about violence against Arabs in the West Bank and East Jerusalem than those who say they hurt security (16% vs. 54%).
Israelis were also asked about their concerns about the war going on for a long time and expanding into other countries. Read more about these concerns in our previously published report, “Israeli Views of the Israel-Hamas War.”
