Schemes of Work for teaching RE to all key stages

We know that planning schemes of work is a laborious and time consuming job for busy teachers, which is why we have created ready-to-use schemes made up of 35 units for Primary schools and 15 units for Secondary schools.

You can view the full list of units here .

Units include lots of teaching and learning ideas, links to useful resources, learning outcomes and assessment guidance and suggestions. Each unit offers on average eight hours of classroom ideas.

We have created these units of work to support its syllabus model A, currently in use in a number of local authorities. However, they offer a resource to support you in teaching RE wherever you are in the country, even if your syllabus is not an RE Today model.

Our Schemes of Work are a resource offering a range of ideas for your classroom. They do not supersede your agreed syllabus.

Check out our handy guide to planning with RE Today units of work to support you in deciding whether these schemes will work for you and your school.

As these are external third-party websites we are unable to remedy this. The schemes of work are not lesson plans, and do not contain PPTs alongside the content.

RE Today is not responsible for content on external websites. Links were active and correct at time of publication, but they do not always last. Please do check content etc before passing on to students/using in the classroom. Enough information is provided with links for teachers to search for a suitable alternative should links break

RE Scheme 2023

  • RE Scheme 2019
  • Spirituality

Welcome to the 2023 Scheme of Work for Primary RE

Introduction.

This new Diocesan scheme of work has evolved from the previous scheme that was first published in 2014. It takes account of much of the thinking that has been happening over the last few years.

Please note that the scheme is not yet complete. More units and recoruces will be added over the coming months.

The scheme suggests the Understanding Christianity resource units that may be taught in place of the scheme’s units. It also references the proposed National Statement of Entitlement that has been included in the Religious Educations Councils latest Curriculum Resource document: https://religiouseducationcouncil.org.uk/resource/worldviews-resource-draft/

A copy of the Statement of Entitlement is included at the end of the scheme overview.

This scheme is not presented as a finished piece of work. A curriculum in any subject needs to be continually evolving and adapting to new developments, cohorts and contexts. Every school is different. Some of you will be teaching in mixed classes, some of which will also be mixed phase. This will mean that units need to be adapted. There are also different syllabuses that you need to follow. Some will require a broader range of religious tradition than others. Some will specify in which year groups certain religions are to be taught.

The scheme no longer links units to specific terms withing the year. Each year group has three units focused on Christianity, two focused on a second worldview and a philosophy unit that gives the opportunity to teachers to revisit learning about a range of worldviews, including Christianity. This is going to be the best unit for exploring non-religious worldviews.

The vision for this scheme is that it will be a collaborative project. Anyone who adapts a unit, completely rewrites a unit or provides a unit that doesn’t already exist is invited to send it in.

The scheme already contains intent, implementation, and impact statements, as well as a core knowledge building blocks chart. Development work will continue through the academic year 2023-24, with the creation of knowledge organisers and more detailed documentation.

Jigsaw Schools

Children positively impacted, jigsaw re - religious education for 3-12.

Jigsaw RE is a comprehensive Religious Education scheme of learning for ages 3-12.

Written by RE specialist teachers in the Jigsaw team and trialled by 100 schools, the weekly lesson plans include all the resources required to deliver exciting RE. An integral assessment process and accompanying assemblies make Jigsaw RE the first of its kind, and the vehicle to transform statutory RE in the primary school.

It adopts an enquiry-based worldview approach to teaching and learning with much flexibility and choice of when to include which religion/worldview.

Enquiry Approach

In Jigsaw RE, an enquiry is a unit of work based on a Big Enquiry Question e.g. What is good about Good Friday for Christians?   Each enquiry consists of 6 lesson plans. Each lesson, in the format of an easy-to-use slideshow with teacher notes, has all the resources needed to deliver it, plus assessment activity sheets, descriptors and exemplification.

Year old children, downshall primary school, yasmin raja - pshe lead and phase leader.

Calm Me time has enabled our students to become more aware of their thoughts and emotions, and to develop techniques to manage stress and anxiety. It is now regular practice that this is used across the school, for behaviour management and wellbeing.

Connect Us games strategies have resulted in our pupils being far more socially literate and able to interact effectively. It has helped our students to develop empathy and understanding for others, and to build supportive networks. Social interactions are emphasised through group work, collaborative projects, and team building activities. This activity helps students to develop their communication and interpersonal skills, and to understand the importance of working together towards common goals.

The impact of Jigsaw has been significant. Students report feeling more confident, resilient, and better equipped to manage their emotions and relationships. They also report feeling more connected to their peers and to the wider school community. Teachers report that students are more engaged and motivated in their learning, and that classroom relationships are stronger and more positive. Overall, Jigsaw has had a positive impact on both the wellbeing and academic outcomes of our children and has helped us build a cohesive and inclusive school community.

Yasmin chose Jigsaw PSHE , will you?

Love PlanBee. Amazing site and very useful resources available. Will definitely recommend to others.

Super content matched to our school’s knowledge progression maps. I liked the embedded videos and QR code opportunities to view sources independently on tablets. I think the choice to buy individual lessons could be made clearer on the website. I liked the option to only buy the history content. The planning considered requirements of the NC eg thinking like historians and handling sources. Great unit of work. Thank you!

Hi Elaine, thank you for taking the time to leave us a review - we're so pleased to hear that you like our resources. We are just a small team of five ex-teachers, so we really appreciate your feedback :-)

Attractive , good quality resources.

Thanks, Kate!

Great RE unit really helped to be able to download a ready made unit. Was running out of ideas for RE and this was just what I needed. Saves lots of time too.

We're so pleased to hear that our resources have saved you time, Hazel! Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review :-)
