As you progress further in your career, particularly to executive level, you may be asked to give a presentation for interview. Many people find giving presentations intimidating, especially during an interview when you’re already nervous, but it’s something that you may have to do throughout your career – the sooner you tackle this skill, the better.

Why are you being asked to do a presentation for a job interview?

Many employers opt for a presentation-style interview as it gives a better overview of your general aptitude when compared to, or combined with, a traditional question and answer interview, like a competency-based interview . The interviewer is looking for proof that you can do the job and that you possess the required skills and traits.

Additionally, if you put time and effort into your presentation, this will highlight to the hiring manager that you are committed to the role and enthusiastic about joining the company. Some interviewers may even give you a specific amount of time for your presentation, make sure you factor this in and don’t go over the time limit – otherwise you may appear to have poor time management skills.

Another way to make sure your presentation engages hiring managers is to include a range of formats to help you illustrate your points. Include graphs, statistics, diagrams, video clips, and images to help break up large volumes of text and maintain the attention of the interviewers.

Try not to talk too fast - Make sure you breathe, and take your time.

Practice, practice, practice - Ensure you are well rehearsed so that you are familiar with the structure of your presentation and are able to deliver it smoothly. If possible, practice your presentation with family members or friends to get used to speaking in front of other people.

Arrive early to give yourself time to set up the presentation and settle any nerves - Get comfortable with PowerPoint and presentation equipment. Make sure you know how to work any projectors, screens, or remote controls before you begin to avoid any awkward stumbles or pauses.

Stay within the allocated time - If you have not been given guidance on length, aim for the 10-minute mark. Time your presentation when you are practising to make sure it will fit within the time limit. If you need to reduce the content of your presentation, cut out the least relevant or weakest points.

Be prepared to adapt - You may have practised your presentation in a certain way, but the interviewer might not respond accordingly. Be prepared to be interrupted by questions or further discussion unexpectedly.

It can take a lot of work to make something simple, yet effective, and when it comes to interview presentations less is often more. Keep it short - As previously mentioned, try to keep each slide short and aim for no more than 10 slides in total.

One idea per slide - To make sure your presentation is clear and concise, each slide should represent a different point/idea you want to make.

Stick to the important bits only - If you don’t think it’s important enough to spend time on, don’t have it on your slide.

Use the 4x6 rule - Aim for either four bullet points with six words per bullet point, or six bullet points with four words per bullet point. This way, your slides won’t look too busy.

Minimal text - Instead of writing paragraphs of text, use bullet points and a minimum font size of 24.

What's better for your interview presentation? Cue cards or presenting from memory?

The answer to this question depends on what you feel most comfortable doing. If you find that having cue cards will help ease your nerves and ensure that you don’t forget your speech, then there is nothing wrong with that.

However, if you choose to use cue cards, you should not rely too heavily on them. You shouldn’t stand in front of the interviewers and look down at the cards continuously, neither should you write your whole speech out on the cards and read directly from them. They are cue cards for a reason and should only give you prompts on what to talk about. If your interview presentation has a lot of statistics on, using cue cards to remember the figures if you are unable to memorise them all is an excellent strategy.

What to do when things go wrong

You can practice your interview presentation as much as possible, but something may still go wrong and it’s important to be prepared for this eventuality. Here are some things that could go wrong and how to deal with them: Technical issues

There is not a lot you can do to prevent technical issues, especially if you are using someone else’s computer. But there are ways you can prepare just in case. Ensuring you have access to multiple sources of your presentation is key. Email the file to yourself and the recruiter, bring a copy on a USB stick and printed handouts. This way you are covered if anything goes wrong with the file you’re intending to use.

Your mind goes blank

Even those who are pros at presenting can sometimes lose their train of thought and find that their mind goes blank. The key here is not to panic. If possible, take a bottle or glass of water in with you and use this chance to take a sip, breathe and try to relax. Then look at your presentation slide or your cue cards and pick up where you left off. It may be helpful to repeat the last point you made as saying it out loud could spark your memory for your next point.

You are asked a question that you don’t know how to respond to

If you have allotted time at the end of your presentation to allow the interviewer to ask any questions (which is recommended), don’t worry if someone asks a question that you are not sure on. It may be that the interviewer is looking to see how you respond to a challenging question, so how you react is often more important than the answer itself.

If you do not understand the question, ask the person to explain. There is nothing wrong with doing this and shows more confidence than just saying that you don’t know. If you understand the question but are not sure of the answer, then admit that you don’t have the full answer, provide what information you do have, and offer to come back to them at a later date with a complete answer.

These interview presentations can range from technical tasks and presenting your results and how you found the task, to giving a mock pitch or presentation for a client, or even presenting about yourself and why you are a great fit for the job.

And while there are a wide variety of job interview presentations you can be asked to give, your approach should stay the same.

And you can always ask the interviewer how long they would like the presentation to be: After all, they will have had multiple people complete this presentation for them before, and should know roughly how long it should take.

2. Make it visual

Your interview presentation should engage the interviewer, but without boring them.So you should aim to make it visually appealing: Which means more than just slides filled with text after text.

Instead of having fields of data, use graphs, diagrams and charts to make these more digestible and visually interactive. 

3. Don’t overcrowd the slides with information

We generally advise only having one idea or point per slide. You want your presentation to be easily digestible, without bombarding your interviewer with too much information at once.

After all, you should use the slides to highlight the most important parts of your presentation, and then go into more detail and expand on them yourself.

4. Use the company’s branding

A small touch for your job interview presentation to impress the interviewer, is to match the branding of the company you’re looking to join.

This simply entails looking at the company website, perhaps even downloading some of their downloadable assets, and copying their brand feel and style.

5. Proofread

When you’re finished with putting together your presentation, it’s time to double and triple-check it. Because there’s nothing more embarrassing than going to present and noticing a spelling mistake that throws you off your game. Or even worse, having it pointed out by the interviewer.

6. Make sure to practise beforehand

Whether you practise on your own or with others, it’s crucial that you practise your presentation beforehand. This allows you to:

  • Make sure your presentation flows smoothly from slide to slide and point to point.
  • Ensure you have fully memorised the content of the presentation.
  • And that your presentation is an appropriate length, not too short or going on for too long.

And if you’re not a natural presenter, rehearsing and ensuring that you’re as practised as you can be is a great way to increase your confidence.

7. Present confidently and clearly

But if you can’t present with confidence and clarity, the interviewer isn’t going to have much faith in your ability to work cohesively with others.

Your body language tells your interviewer a lot more about how you’re feeling than you realise. So aim to have open body language, animated but not erratic. 

Meanwhile try to avoid having arms crossed, with conveys being uncomfortable in the situation. Or having a lack of eye contact, that can convey that you’re not confident with what you’re saying. For example, if you’re given 30 minutes for your presentation, we would advise aiming for around the 25 minute mark, allowing 5 minutes for any questions.

This gives you ample time to answer any interviewer questions, and gives you the time to respond to challenging questions without feeling rushed, knowing you have the time to think of an answer.

11. Understand what the interviewer is looking to see, and prepare for any questions you might face

While it can be tricky, it’s important to put yourself in the shoes of the hiring manager and interviewer. Try to understand what exact skills they’re looking for from your presentation.

Understanding this will have a huge impact on your presentation and its contents. 

Additionally, understanding the areas of importance to your interviewer helps you to predict and prepare for potential questions you’re likely to face.

And if you’re not a natural public speaker, (and even if you are) the best bit of advice we can give you is to practise your presentation until it feels natural. The more you practise, the better you’ll know what you’re presenting, and the more confident you will feel.

3. Having Too Much Information on the Slides

A common mistake we see from the candidates we work with is having too much information on your slides. Which sounds contradictory, after all, you want as much information in your presentation as possible, right?

Well yes and no. After all, you want your presentation to be chock-full of relevant information. 

But you should aim to use the slides of your presentation as talking points that allow you to present information. The slides should have examples, key figures, or data on, that allows you to expand on them in your own words. Because you want the attention to be on you, not just on the slides.

After all, nobody wants to sit through a half hour presentation of you reading out all the information that’s already on the slides in front of them.

4. Not Being Prepared For Potential Questions

Part of preparing your interview presentation, is predicting the potential questions you may face.

This may require some introspection: Thinking which areas of the presentation are most important, and which areas the interviewer is likely to focus on.

Realistically, you can’t think of every possible question that you can be asked. But, even the act of preparing answers to potential questions will make you more confident going into the interview, and help you to rehearse everything you need to present.

It’s no secret that you are far less appealing as a potential hire if you don’t know anything about the company or industry. But the important thing here is to make sure your gathered knowledge comes across. Prove your expertise in your presentation.

Sometimes, your potential employer will have a particular platform that they want you to use for your interview presentation, but more than likely, they will leave it up to you. The basic presentation software out there includes PowerPoint, Keynote, and Google Slides. Start with Structure

Every great presentation, whether for an interview or not, starts with a strong and compelling structure. In simplest terms, you have an opening, details, and then a conclusion. When structuring your presentation, begin with a strong opening that states your goals and introduces yourself. Next, keep the main body of the presentation to around three major points (although you can have plenty of subsections.) Then finish with a killer closing, something to bring it all home. All throughout, keep your message clear and make every piece of your presentation relate back to that message.

Pre-Recorded Video Interviews

On a related note, some potential employers may ask you to make a pre-recorded video interview. This tactic has become increasingly prevalent in the age of COVID and Zoom interviews. Essentially, employers can give you a set of questions ahead of time and you can record yourself answering them, then send it in for them to review on their own time. Sometimes, potential employers will call this a “pre-screening.” While this isn’t technically an interview “presentation” per say, it sort of falls into the same category, so we want you to be prepared.

The best way to record video interviews is with whatever software and setup you’re comfortable with! If you have a great camera-ring light-soundproof room already set up and raring to go, obviously you should use that. But if you don’t have a pro setup, don’t sweat it. Most people don’t. Just record your interview with the webcam on your computer. You can also record an interview directly through Zoom meetings . But do make sure that you are properly lit, somewhere quiet, and that your background is clean and intentional.

 Other tips for pre-recorded video interviews:

  • Maintain eye contact by focusing on the camera and not the video of yourself.
  • Dress professionally , even your pants and shoes that won’t be seen in the video. You’ll be in a better headspace when you’re dressing the part and you avoid the embarrassment of accidentally standing up while only wearing boxers in the video.
  • Remember — it’s still an interview! Don’t let the strange format throw you off. You still need to transfer everything you’ve learned about acing interviews, like not fidgeting and sitting up straight – to this pre-recorded format. Check out our article on acing remote interviews to learn more.

A key part of interviews nowadays is to ask prospective applicants to carry out a 10-minute presentation. In this question and answer article, we asked our readers to see if they had any advice for these kinds of presentations.

I’ve just been told that I have a job interview next Wednesday. I need to do a 10 minute presentation in front of the other candidates followed by a formal interview. The topic of the presentation is “What I can bring to this position” and “How will I adapt to make my job successful”. I’ve never had to do anything like this before and I just don’t know where to start!

I am also  preparing for an interview myself. I have to present myself and let them know what will I bring to the team. I have started my report by saying who am I, my academic background and now I am thinking of talking about my business qualifications and how my present job experience helped me be more responsible, organized, problem solver ext. I will present some cases where I was very much involved and that will show my professional attitude and mentality.

I have been offered the following advice for my ten minute presentation for an interview this coming Tuesday, so I’m sharing it with you. I will be given the topic and given an hour to prepare it.

The structure: 

Tell them what you are going to tell them.

Tell them what you told them.

You should use minimal flip charts or slides, no more than 4 I would aim at 3 if possible.

  • Start with an introduction “I am”, “I will be talking about … and I will allow time for questions (at end).”
  • Depending upon what subject you get you may wish to consider using the SWOT analysis method of delivery which should contain about 3 or 4 Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. I often find subjects or the questions asked don’t fit easily into SWOT and should that be the case it is perhaps best to use the rule of 3.
  • Pick what your Focal point will be i.e Our Company should wear green ties not red ties.
  • Presuming that you will be given a flipchart at least, I would divide the body of the presentation into three points, and use a separate flip chart for each point. For example, discussing the cost, availability and quality.
  • Conclude with a summary backing up your point and maybe even a catch phrase or saying.

Other notes of advice:

Adhere strictly to time, try not to over complicate it, don’t talk to the flip chart, and practice if you have time. In terms of preparation before the day, rack your brains for questions and practice it at home. This will mean that your introduction will essentially be the same and a little bit like a ‘fill in the blanks’.

10 minutes on why I applied and why I am an ideal candidate. 

In a couple of weeks, I will have to give a 10 minute presentation for a prospective job opportunity. I have to answer two questions in this presentation, why I choose to apply for the job and why I am an ideal candidate. I have done some research on the company and have a decent response for the presentation but I have recently found out there are a lot of other candidates and feel I need a hook or theme that the panel will remember and identify with. Do you have any ideas on how I can come up with a suitable ‘hook’ for the presentation.

It is good to see you have done some research on the company, as my best advice for you is to read the job application form and the company’s web site, see what kind of qualities they are looking for. Usually in their company description or job description they will have words like dynamic, honesty, integrity, and innovation in it.Try to use these and others adjectives you think are applicable in your presentation.

As much as possible use real live examples of why you are ideal, i.e. the challenges which you faced at your last company, some of which may face your prospective employers. Talk a little about the ways you have handled yourself and dealt with problems i.e., I handled this problem by using X, which resulted in Y. By doing this you are quoting experience, showing you understand their business, and sharing your knowledge… all good things to show in an interview.

Three successes and one failure presentation

I have to give a 10 minutes presentation tomorrow for a job interview. It has to be based on 3 successes and one failure. I’m going to concentrate on job related issues. Does anyone have any tips on how to pitch this?I have been advised to follow the Situation, Task, Action and Result framework for each item to ensure that I demonstrate the competencies required by the interviewers, but I’m worried that the presentation will end up being too detailed.Also, any views on how I should order each item? ie shall I cover the failure item last or is that too negative?

The best way to present a failure is to fail because of one of your strengths (e.g. I was so determined to get the job done on time, that we went slightly over budget) Effectively talk about the failure more as a trade-off, rather than as a failure. You don’t have to talk about your worst failure.Another one would be I lost the deal, but I was able to take the earnings and win the next one. Also don’t use the failure as the last item. It should go in the middle. People will remember the first and the last items, but not the ones in the middle. Ensure that you say what you learnt from that failure, and how to do it better next time.

It depends on how many questions you have to answer, because 10 minutes isn’t very long to answer lots of questions. If you have been given 4 questions to answer, spend about a minute introducing yourself and then 2 mins per question, and a quick summary of a minute. These timings become smaller with more questions, or longer with fewer questions

I recently interviewed 20 of my customers, all in senior roles at Fortune 100 companies, and asked them their biggest pain point in presenting to higher-ups and even colleagues. What I heard consistently was that it can feel like Goldilocks bouncing from one option to the next, testing to figure out what’s “just right.” Does the audience want deep reports? Sparse slides? Something in between? Like … what?

Teams often come to presentation meetings with vast amounts of backup content just in case an exec wants to take a deep dive on any given point. There’s often a struggle to anticipate every direction attendees might want to go. It’s frustrating, and it’s not efficient.

There are many ways to build slides. I’m not just talking about crafting them well versus poorly. I’m talking about all of the important decisions regarding how to organize them, how much text to use, when to lean into a chart, the best ways to use bullets and color, and whether to include an appendix with additional information. Before you make your next proposal or request of the executive team, use this list of 11 tips for your next set of slides as a guide.

Four Things You Must Have in Every Exec’s Slides

Before we drill down into the harder aspects, the ones where your executives’ tastes may vary widely, let’s quickly cover four aspects that you can consider the building blocks — the basics you should never proceed without.

Start with an executive summary. Begin the slide deck with a tight executive summary that follows a three-act structure. First, start with stating the current realities. Second, clearly state the problem or opportunity your idea addresses and its potential impact. Third, explain how your recommendation solves the problem or exploits the opportunity and the next steps you’re proposing.

Have a logical organization. The arc of the deck — the package from beginning to end — should make sense. If your audience reads only the headline of every slide, the order should be coherent and make most of the case for you. The content below each slide’s headline must support the statement made in the title. Remove everything that doesn’t support your point; as writers will tell you, you sometimes need to “kill your darlings” when you’re editing.

Begin the slide deck with a tight executive summary that follows a three-act structure.

Make it skimmable. Help your audience to quickly grasp the point without getting bogged down in details. Create a clear visual hierarchy. Guide the reader’s eye through the content: Use bold headings, bullet points, and numbered lists to break down information into digestible pieces. Highlight key takeaways or conclusions in a different color or font size to draw attention to these critical points.

Focus on concise insights. Succinct statements with clear insights are everyone’s jam. Every slide should serve a purpose and contribute directly to the decision-making process. Distill complex information. Don’t use 100 words when 20 words will nail it. If you’re having difficulty trimming, consider using company-approved AI tools to help you take out the fluff.

Five Preferences to Confirm With the Person You Want to Reach

Now we’ll delve into what your particular audience does and does not want. If you haven’t yet, start by asking the person you’re presenting to what they generally prefer. They probably know themselves well but have not been asked to articulate how they like to receive information.

Ask how dense is too dense. Some executives prefer detailed slides with comprehensive data. Others favor a more high-level approach. You’re weighing how to balance informative content with readability, ensuring that slides are not overloaded yet are sufficiently detailed to support decision-making.

Confirm the delivery format and timing. Some execs like information presented to them. Others prefer a pre-read of the material followed by a discussion. I always recommend our tool Slidedocs (I’ve written a free e-book on them), which are visual documents using both words and images. The templates help presenters organize their thoughts into a document for a pre-read or a read-along. They are designed to be skimmable and able to travel through your organization without the help of a presenter.

I’m a huge fan of pre-reads and prefer to use my time in meetings to ask questions and build alignment. If your audience didn’t review your material in advance, ask at the top of the meeting whether they would like you to present it or would prefer to read through it and then discuss it.

Find out how much data visualization they prefer. Charts, graphs, photos, and illustrations often communicate complex data more clearly than words alone. When execs can see what you’re saying, they often can better understand the impact of your idea. Does the exec want to understand exact numbers? Bar charts allow them to move their eyes across a series of specifics. Does the exec want to know the shape of a trend over time? Line charts can show the pattern. (See “Classic Charts Communicate Data Quickly.”) Some prefer charts with annotations that draw attention to what you think is the most important point. Others want to make their own conclusions from the data.

One of my clients, the CEO of a massive commercial real estate company, doesn’t want anything visualized. He prefers numbers, only in a table, and only in two colors — black and red. You might think this is archaic. But the fact that he’s clear to his teams about what he wants takes all the mystery out of how to communicate with him.

When the stakes are high, have a conceptual thinker help with diagrams and concepts. If you don’t have one on your team, and when it’s high stakes, find an internal designer to help you or hire one. You can’t afford to have the baby (your idea) thrown out with the bathwater (terrible slides).

Identify which details need spelling out. How well do the people you’re presenting to know the landscape and function of the company and products you’re talking about? For example, if your engineering team threw a slide into a deck about an issue that requires executive approval, do the execs all speak geek? Or do you need to explain the technology so that they will really understand the ask? Either eliminate internal jargon and acronyms or unpack those bits, especially if your proposal deeply involves expertise outside of the executives’ domain.

Ask whether appendices will be useful. When you’re organizing a presentation, you often troll data, read through complicated reports, and even hire external experts to figure out what’s best for the company. Do your execs want access to that supporting data? You can add a document to the end of the presentation as an appendix to show all of the data and source material. This allows the main content of the slides to remain focused and accessible while still providing comprehensive background information for those who want more.

Two Tips to Improve Your Presentation Skills

Getting materials in place is the biggest step. They will be your best tools for selling your ideas. But there are two extra areas to pay attention to as a presenter: how you handle questions and how you use every experience to improve.

Anticipate questions, and practice your answers. Before you have your meeting, gather a small team to challenge every point you make. Invite colleagues you trust to role-play as “a rapidly inquisitive exec” or “the doubting naysayer exec” so you are prepared to present your idea well. They’re gonna grill you, and practicing will help you remain unruffled when it happens.

Ask for feedback after the presentation. Establish a feedback loop with those you presented to. Ask what worked well and how you can improve. If attendees don’t have the time, find people who have had their ideas funded and talk to them about what they did that worked. Advice and some perspective will help you nail your performance even better next time.

Empathetically understanding your audience members and how they process information, whether it’s executives or peers, sets up your ideas for success. Clarity creates efficiency. When a presentation fits just right, you’ve given your great thinking the best chance of moving through your organization and having maximum impact.

Bill Gates Says Steve Jobs Made Presentations Look Natural Because He Rehearsed

Five steps for effective rehearsals.

When it comes to delivering extraordinary presentations , few could compete with Steve Jobs. "Steve was a natural," according to Bill Gates on a recent episode of the podcast Armchair Expert With Dax Shepard .

Since I wrote one of the most popular books on Steve Jobs's presentation style , my ears perked up when Gates called Jobs a "natural." I know that Jobs improved over time, because he practiced over and over .

Was Gates fooled into thinking Jobs was simply a naturally gifted public speaker? No. Gates knows better and immediately added, "Although Jobs would rehearse, and it was fun to watch him. Part of his genius was that when he would finally do it, he would make it look like he was just thinking it up right there."

Gates is right. Jobs put a lot of effort into making it look effortless .

The good news is that you can also achieve this effortless presentation style. Just follow the five-step rehearsal strategy that made the public speaking of Steve Jobs the gold standard for business presentations.

1. Start rehearsing early.

Jobs committed to rehearsing his famous keynote presentations and product launches weeks before the event.

Most entrepreneurs or business leaders I coach leave their practice sessions for the night before or the morning of their presentation. They're shocked when I give them their new practice schedule, which starts far earlier than they ever dreamed.

2. Rehearse out loud.

A rehearsal means just that -- rehearsing the presentation just as you would do it for real.

Jobs would take the stage with only a select few people in the room. One executive who witnessed a rehearsal told me he was surprised that Jobs climbed onstage, raised the volume of his voice, and delivered the presentation as if he were speaking to a packed auditorium.

It's harder to open your mouth and articulate your ideas than it is to silently read through the slides in your head. Practice your presentation out loud.

3. Refine slides, lines, and gestures.

Jobs paid attention to every aspect of the performance: visuals, words, and body language. If he wasn't happy with the design of a slide or an explanation, he would improve it for the next rehearsal.

While you're rehearsing, note slides or words that need to be changed. Also, pay attention to your body language and delivery. Record yourself on video and watch it. You might catch annoying habits that you were not aware of. Also, look for moments where gestures might enhance the power of your ideas.

4. Ask for feedback.

Jobs had a reputation for telling customers what they wanted before they asked for it. But when it came to rehearsing presentations, he encouraged collaboration.

After practicing part of a presentation, Jobs would walk off the stage and ask the people in the room what they thought of the demo, slides, or word choice. He wanted to hear from others, and so should you.

Don't schedule all your rehearsal sessions by yourself. Ask trusted friends or peers to watch. Ask them for feedback and incorporate some of their advice. After all, they're seeing your presentation like others will -- as outsiders.

5. Schedule dress rehearsals.

Jobs cleared his calendar ahead of the actual event to schedule "dress rehearsals." He would show up in his uniform: jeans, black mock, running shoes. Jobs didn't always wear blue jeans and a mock turtleneck shirt to the office, but he did for public presentations.

Commit to dress rehearsals by scheduling the session on your calendar just as you would any important appointment. When you show up, be in "full dress." Wear the same type of clothes that you'll have on for the presentation. It will help you get into speaking mode, and you'll feel more comfortable when you take the stage for the real thing.

Few speakers are born "naturals." They work at it and, like Steve Jobs, rehearse effectively to make it look natural.

Professor dives into PRR

Three-book series chronicles history of rail industry in region.

The dieselization of the Pennsylvania Railroad did not do any favors for the city of Altoona, according to Albert Churella, a history professor at Kennesaw State University, who penned a three-book series about the history of the railroad.

While giving a presentation Thursday night at the Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum, Churella said the Altoona Works was once the “best in the world” at producing steam and electric locomotives, which were replaced by internal combustion, or diesel, locomotives on the Pennsylvania Railroad in the 1940s. There were many reasons for the change, he said.

Executives of the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. were initially reluctant to switch to diesel locomotives because they feared alienating coal producers. Criticism from financial analysts — like Isabel Benham — about the railroad’s use of coal, which became more costly to produce and caused pollution, accelerated with the acquisition of diesel power, Churella said.

“I’m not sure people really cared much about local pollution in Altoona because, after all, the Pennsylvania Railroad was the economic driver of the city. But in places like Pittsburgh they sure did,” he said. “Pittsburgh made it very clear that in no way the Pennsylvania Railroad was going to bring steam locomotives into the city anymore.”

Switching to diesel locomotives saved the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. from declaring bankruptcy in 1946, when the railroad reported a net loss for the first time, he said.

According to Churella, financial experts were stunned when they realized diesel locomotives could yield up to 40% of an annual return on investments, effectively paying for themselves within a few years.

“The word went out to eliminate steam as quickly as possible,” he said, adding the last two steam locomotives in regular service succumbed on Nov. 4, 1957.

He said the end of steam locomotive production, with steam locomotive maintenance subsiding, dealt “the final blow” to the city of Altoona and the Altoona Works, which had once accounted for 90% of the city’s employment.

“Even high-seniority employees could not count on steady work,” he said. “Instead they endured long furloughs hoping to be called back for a brief period of high-paying employment.”

Churella said the city’s population declined as younger individuals moved away to look for jobs elsewhere. Many of the older residents were laid off, but still hoped they might be called back to work, unwilling to give up their seniority and too old to start again elsewhere, he said.

Altoona resident Dean McKnight said the city’s people had a lot of pride in their railroad. He said people had stock invested in the railroad, which they considered to be like government bonds that would last forever.

“A lot of people don’t understand that it wasn’t as much somebody being dumb as it was that they had too much pride in what they were doing, and they just believed that nobody could do it better,” McKnight said.

“When they started laying off, it handicapped our economic opportunities because the wealth of the community disappeared. It took us a long time to recover from that,” he said.

Churella said he was approached in 2001 by the University of Pennsylvania Press in Philadelphia, who wanted him to write a book about the history of the Pennsylvania Railroad. The book became three separate volumes, he said.

The first book in the series, “The Pennsylvania Railroad: Volume 1, Building an Empire, 1846-1917,” was published in September 2012. His second book, “The Pennsylvania Railroad: Volume 2: The Age of Limits, 1917-1933,” was published last year by the Indiana University Press.

Churella is currently writing the final book in the series, which carries the story of the Pennsylvania Railroad from 1933-68, when it merged with the New York Central Railroad to form the Penn Central Transportation Co. The book is expected to be released later this year, he said.

It turns out that Al’s father would have been Matt’s great-grandfather’s brother. That side of the family moved to Ohio, with Al now residing in Georgia, proving once again that it really is a small world.

Job Summary:

The UW-Madison Office of Legal Affairs (OLA) is comprised of 15 in-house attorneys who provide legal advice and representation on the wide range of complex and highly specialized legal issues affecting the research-intensive and flagship campus of the Universities of Wisconsin. The Senior University Legal Counsel (Attorney III), University Legal Counsel (Attorney II), or Associate University Legal Counsel (Attorney I) position is a professional, academic staff position in OLA. The duties of the position include rendering oral and written advice, advising various university committees, and participating in training and preventive law presentations on a broad array of complex and novel legal subjects for UW-Madison administrators, faculty, and staff. Working in collaboration with other attorneys in the practice area, this position will primarily be responsible for advice and counsel related to the following areas: Employment law: Advise on university staff, academic staff, and faculty policies/procedures, state and federal employment and labor laws; manage phases of litigation while representing the interests of UW-Madison before administrative bodies such as the Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission, the Equal Rights Division and the federal government's Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Office for Civil Rights; serve as liaison with the Assistant Attorneys General in the Department of Justice in court litigation. Student and Academic Affairs: Advise on the application and development of policies and procedures related to student issues including, but not limited to, academic and non-academic misconduct; admissions; disability and religious accommodations; discrimination issues; diversity; education records and privacy (FERPA); student governance and segregated student fees; Registered Student Organizations (RSOs); and residency appeals. Attorneys work closely with administrators responsible for these programs and policies, and advise committees in proceedings related thereto.
