It will come as no surprise that you will have to pay tuition fees in America. Students at American universities must pay fees ranging from around $10,000 to over $60,000 a year for a Bachelor’s degree, although prices tend to be around $25,000 or $40,000 depending on the type of university you attend. Prices for a Master’s degree tend to average around $30,000 a year, but some courses can be significantly cheaper. 

On top of that, there are often more fees that you will have to pay to remain enrolled. An American education can offer many benefits, both while you are a student and afterwards, but it is not cheap. And if you are an international student, you will need to be able to show how you will meet the fees to get a visa, so the cost is something you will need to consider. 

The American higher education system includes many models, and while they may all offer a high-quality education, cost is one of the biggest ways they differ . 

Many universities, including some of the most prestigious, are private institutions. These rely on income from fees or endowments and tend to be the most expensive at around $40,000 a year. The most expensive institutions, which tend to be the most prestigious, like Harvard or Stanford, can cost around $60,000 a year, making a four-year degree, along with living expenses, very costly.

Unfortunately, there is no free education in America for international students. Indeed, because the cheapest fees are for residents of the state that funds the university, international students will usually be looking at fees that start in the middle of the fees range. 

If you are wondering how to study in America for free, there is some good news. Generally speaking, international students not only pay the same as domestic students at most universities, but they also have access to the same funding opportunities as everyone else. Indeed, some of the most expensive universities say that the funding they make available can mean that almost all your costs, including their fees, are covered. 

Financial Aid and Scholarships in United States

Most students, domestic and international, at American universities will benefit from some form of aid or scholarship . However, getting them may be as difficult as getting on the course itself! 

The US State department’s Education USA website highlights a choice of available scholarships. Some of these are general awards, which can fund a degree at any qualifying institution. However, most awards will relate to specific colleges and universities.

Types of scholarships on offer 

A lot of the funding available for students comes from donations and gifts, often from former students. It can mean that in some places there are hundreds of potential awards. Typically, funding is available as either scholarships or grants . 

Scholarships will usually have an academic part to them. They may require a particular level of qualification, or skill, to be proven to be awarded. They will typically be limited, meaning only a specific number or amount is awarded each year. A common question is ‘how many scholarships should I apply for?’ Because they are so competitive, it’s often a good idea to apply for all those that you meet the criteria for. 

Grants are awarded based on need. These will need evidence of income to prove the level of support needed. Generally, universities award these to all that need them, so if you meet the criteria, you will receive an award. 

Where you can find scholarships 

You should think about funding at the same time you are thinking about applying, and research the options available to you. Every university’s website will have a section dedicated to financial aid, helping you find the information you need easily. You will be able to find this easily by searching the website for terms like ‘financial aid’ or ‘scholarships’. 

Be sure to check the rules for the schemes you want to apply to, you can sometimes apply before, or often at the same time, as you apply for a place. And, whatever the deadline, you will have to ensure that you have a decision in place before you apply for your student visa. 

There is generally no limit to the number of applications you can make. However, most universities operate a combined application scheme, meaning that you only need to make one application which will be considered in all the schemes for which you are eligible.

How to apply 

The exact process will depend on the scholarship, bursary, or aid you are applying for, and where you are applying. 

The first thing you should do is carefully check the rules and guidelines. They will all follow a similar process, but will not be identical, so make sure you don’t get caught out. 

• The most important thing is to check the eligibility criteria. Competitive scholarships will have countless applicants, so if you don’t fully meet the criteria, you won’t be considered. And if you are applying for a needs-based grant, you will be rejected. 
• Make sure you gather all the documents you need and keep them in a safe place. If you are applying to several places, you will need them again. 
• Once you have everything, complete the application. Again, check this carefully — and ask others to check for you. An incomplete or wrong entry will, at best, delay a decision and possibly any funding. At worst, it might mean you are unsuccessful. 
• And when you have a decision, don’t celebrate straight away. Make sure you fully understand the terms and conditions that are attached to it. And if you have other applications pending, it might even be worth waiting for all your decisions to make sure you accept the best one for you. 

What to include in your application 

Each scheme will advise exactly what you need to include in your application. However, in general, they will be looking to establish that you are eligible for the award, and possibly to understand your motivation in applying. 

This means that, on top of your personal information, they are likely to want some financial information to show your level of need for aid.

Apply to university in United States

American universities all handle their own admissions, and, unlike some other countries, there are no central processes for either domestic or international students. This means you may have to manage multiple applications. 

How to apply

Having to apply to each university means each might offer a slightly different application process . However, they all follow a similar pattern, requiring an online application and submission of documents. 

The online application will generally include basic information, like your personal details and contact details for tutors or those providing references, as well as your previous and current schools or colleges. 

You will also need to pay an application fee. How much does it cost to apply to university? The fee is usually between $50 and $150. You might also have been wondering if you can apply to two courses at the same university, and the good news is that most run a common application system, meaning that you can complete a single application for different colleges or courses. If you are applying to multiple universities, though, the costs may soon mount, meaning you will probably want to limit your applications to where you have a reasonable chance of securing a place. The acceptance rates for courses vary dramatically, our guide will give you a good idea of the competition there is for university places in America . 

You will also have to submit various documents depending on the course. Common requirements are qualification certificates (including a specific GPA ), portfolios, and proof of English language ability. How these are sent may also vary, since some universities may have strict requirements about establishing authenticity. 

Finally, some universities may offer an interview. This is more common with prestigious universities like Ivy League colleges (read our advice on applications to Ivy League colleges ). This is not, usually, a formal part of the application process, and takes place with an alumnus near to you. There is no obligation to have an interview, but many value the opportunity to find out more and start preparing for their time as a student. 

What’s the structure of the American academic year 

American universities mostly follow the English structure of having three semesters a year, although precise dates will vary, they are broadly follow the pattern: 

• Fall semester runs from September to December 
• Spring semester lasts from January to April 
• Summer semester lasts from May until July. 

The academic year starts in September, and most universities will only offer a single start each year. 

When to apply for American universities 

Each university will have its own deadlines, so check these carefully. Usually, the deadline to apply for university is in the December or January before entry. 

Most universities make decisions quickly, and by the end of the March almost all decisions will have been issued. Applying early means you will get a decision sooner and can start making plans whatever the outcome. 

Documents needed to apply for university 

The documents needed to apply for university will vary from course to course. 

At a minimum, you will need to show your academic qualifications, either with a transcript of your school record or first degrees, or both. These must be recognised qualifications, and depending on who issued them you may have to arrange for them to be translated and certified. 

Language requirements

Although America has no official language, English is the dominant tongue, and the one used in universities. You will, therefore, need to prove your fluency. How can you demonstrate proficiency in English? There are two ways. 

Most universities will accept earlier education in English as evidence of fluency. Typically, this will require three years of instruction solely in English, for example at school or a Bachelor’s degree. 

Alternatively, universities will accept commonly recognised English tests. The exact requirements will vary between universities and even courses. Tests, and the scores you need, include: 

• IELTS Academic (International English Language Testing System). Most universities will look for at least 7.5 on this test. 
• TOEFL iBT (The Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test). A score of 100 or more is usually needed. 
• PTE Academic (Pearsons Test of English Academic). A minimum score of 68 is usually requested. 
• iTEP (International Test of English Proficiency). A score of 4.5 or higher. 
• C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency (Cambridge English: Advanced or Proficiency). A core of 190 or more. 

Another possibility may be the Duolingo English Test. Although not as established, it is gaining wider acceptance, and is an easy-to-access test. Typically, a score of at least 125 is needed. 

Student housing in United States

Anyone who has watched American movies will know that the college dorm or frat house is no stranger to the screen. It could almost be a character itself. But you’ll probably be relieved to know that the movie image of raucous college life is different from the reality. 

What the movies do show, however, is that on-campus student housing in America, or dorms, remains a key part of student life for many. 

While it varies between universities, most Bachelor’s degree students and many Master’s degree students, will have the possibility of living in college accommodation for at least part of their course. The nature of this will vary. Large campus universities may have everything on a single site, meaning you could spend your entire course never leaving the university. Other universities, especially those that are based in larger cities, may offer accommodation, but this might be separate to other parts of the university, and even require a commute to your classes. 

College accommodation will typically consist of a bedroom with some study space, with shared facilities like bathrooms and kitchens. Some may also offer access to catering facilities. Living in college accommodation can be one of the most enjoyable parts of being an international student in America, allowing you to immerse yourself in the student culture. 

Off-campus student housing is also possible, and most Master’s students will tend not to live in university accommodation. 

One option is for private student accommodation. These are becoming increasingly common in areas with significant student populations, especially where university accommodation cannot meet demand. They are popular not just with students who miss university-controlled accommodation, but also those who want a little more independence. 

Private accommodation often looks a lot like a campus dorm, with students having a bedroom and study area, and sharing other facilities. However, there are more options depending on your budget, for example, private bathrooms or regular servicing of your room. 

Finally, there is the possibility of private rental. This is often popular with students who want to share with friends. There is a strong rental market in the US, especially in urban areas. However, demand can be high, and rent can be costly. 

When to apply for student accommodation 

The deadlines set by your university will determine when to apply for student housing. But regardless of what type of accommodation you are hoping to secure, the best advice is to apply as soon as you have a place. 

If you are looking for off-campus accommodation, then you should start looking once you have a place. And it is sensible to have done a little research even before then, so you know exactly what and where you can afford to rent. 

Cost of living in United States

Like most countries, the cost of living varies across America. As might be expected, cities tend to be the most expensive, and across the country, the south and midwestern states tend to be the cheapest. 

Generally, though, America can be one of the more reasonable places to live, and comparable to other Western nations when it comes to costs. Our article on student living in America offers more details. 

For most, rent is likely to be the biggest cost (after course fees) and can vary dramatically. Living in a major city like New York or Boston might cost you as much as $3,000 a month for a single bedroom. Studying at a mid-western university could reduce that to just $600. 

But don’t forget that you will have to include other costs on top of this. You might save on rent at that rural university, but then must pay all the costs of owning a car to get around. Meanwhile, it’s possible to save on rent in cities by living further away from the centre and utilising the well-developed public transport that most major American cities have. 

Cost of food in America 

One area where America can be cheaper than other nations is food. A single person might want to budget between $400 and $600 a month to cover the cost of food in America, but shopping around can bring that amount down significantly. And eating out can be surprisingly cheap too, even in cities. 

However, don’t be caught out, like many are, by things like tipping and taxes. Tipping is expected almost everywhere that serves food or drink, which adds to the total you must pay. And price tags will not include sales taxes, which are set locally and will sometimes include taxes from both the state and city. However, it does mean that if you are savvy, and close to a state or municipal border, you can often make easy savings on your shopping! 

Work and study in United States

Are international students allowed to work in america.

The F-1 Visa does allow international students to work while in America, but there are strict limits. 

First, working hours for international students in America are limited to 20 hours per week during term time. During vacations, full-time work is allowed, but only if you are registered to continue your studies the following semester. 

Second, and perhaps the most limiting, you are only allowed to work in jobs on your university campus. While this still allows for a wide variety of jobs, from working in stores, to technical roles in departments, and possibly even working as tutors if you are studying for a higher degree, there will be a lot of competition for few jobs. 

The only exception that allows work off campus is if it is for practical training related to your degree. However, this will require the permission of US Citizenship and Immigration Services and can only take place after you have completed at least one year of study. 

There are even limits on volunteering, meaning that you can’t for example, take on internships in non-educational settings. 

Where can I find jobs? 

Since, as an international student, you can only work on your campus, your job search will be limited to your university. It may have a suitable vacancies section on its website, but its student services department is also likely to know of jobs suitable for students and may even have some that are particularly suitable for international students. 

It’s also worth asking in your department or places on campus that you use, since you might find out about posts that are coming up, giving you some extra time to think about your application. 

Is United States safe?

America is about as safe as most other Western countries. And like most countries, the dangers you might face will vary on where you are, but a little common sense will go a long way to ensuring that your time in America passes without incident. America is safe for international students. 

One belief of America that many international students and visitors have, fuelled by news coverage, is that the nation has a lot of gun crime. However, such incidents are thankfully rare. Indeed, in most of America, guns are not a major part of the culture. 

Crime tends to be higher in urban areas, but largely because of the increased opportunity such areas provide. Taking care to avoid unfamiliar places, staying in busy places, and avoiding showing off valuables like jewellery and phones will go a long way to avoiding being a victim of crime. 

In some parts of America, though, risks to safety may come from the elements, with some states particularly prone to extreme weather. It’s worth checking to see if you are in an area like this, and, if so, following on advice on what you might need to do, this might be as simple as being aware of where shelters are, or having a go-bag ready in case you need to leave your home for safety at short notice. 

Finally, you should ensure that you have adequate healthcare for your needs. This is not usually a requirement for your visa, although your university might include it as a condition of entry. However, American healthcare is incredibly expensive and there are only extremely limited public healthcare options available. 

You are unlikely to be able to access any healthcare at all if you do not have sufficient insurance or the ability to pay. And in the event you need emergency healthcare, while it will probably be provided, you will also get a big bill afterwards. 

Student insurance in United States

The standard F-1 visa does not require students to have any insurance while they are in America. Some universities, however, may have insurance requirements, most often addressing the need for health insurance. 

However, regardless of visa or college conditions , anyone visiting America, even for a short time, should get insurance. As previously noted, healthcare is very expensive in America, and even if you are in good health, there is no guarantee that it will last for the duration of your course, or that you won’t have an accident that requires treatment. 

On top of student health insurance, you should also consider other types of insurance such as student contents insurance, or student travel insurance if you intend to visit other parts of the country. While most insurance is never needed, you might be grateful for it if you do have to make a claim, especially as an international student far from the support of your home and family.

Support services available for international students

Your university will be the main place you go for any support. Each university will have its student support services and, because of the number of international students, almost all will have dedicated services for international students. 

These services will cover everything you need to make your studies a success, whether it’s help in accessing your education, support if you experience difficulties, or simply organising events and groups that help to make your student experience as positive as possible. 

Student organisations

Again, it is likely that your university will be your first destination when it comes to looking for student organisations, and there will be an international student organisation that will make it easy to meet fellow students from around the world. 

You should also make yourself familiar with the student government in your university. These all take different forms but are there to represent students to the university. They will usually have a role in organising and providing some of the cultural experiences of university life, and frequently play a role in student welfare. 

However, there are also many intercollegiate societies which may be national, state-wide, or in their own network, which are often organised around subjects or interests, like the American Medical Student Association . Whether it’s just absorbing the culture in places like New York’s Central Park or San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, or visiting majestic sites like Niagara Falls or the Grand Canyon. The difficulty in listing the best things to do in America is that there are so many attractions. A single city can give you access to dozens of world-famous attractions. And even listing cities is hard because there are so many you will want to see.

Although most international students will have a standard F-1 visa, it’s important to check there are no other conditions or rules around your stay. Breaching your visa conditions may prevent you from being allowed into America again. 

Usually, your visa will expire when you graduate. The US will expect you to leave the country and return to your home when this happens. Those on a student visa do have a 60-day grace period, during which they can remain in the US. However, it does not allow return to the US, so once you leave you will need to seek a new visa to return, even if your grace period has not expired. 

Unlike many countries, there is no automatic right to extension, for example a temporary work visa, after graduation. However, there are several visas that graduates can apply for if they wish to remain in the US. 

Types of Visa 

One option is to apply for an Optional Practical Training extension. This allows you to work for one year, for up to 20 hours a week. If you are a STEM graduate, you can also apply for an additional year’s extension, allowing you to remain for two years. 

This option is only available if you have not already undertaken Optional Practical Training during your course, and your application will need to be started with your university, who will formally recommend it. Applications can take several months, so need to be started long before your F-1 visa expires.  

You can only work in roles that are directly related to your course and qualification. However, it is a common option, particularly for those looking to work in the tech sector, and many international companies like Apple, Facebook, and Google hire large numbers on OPT visas. 

Another possibility is to get your visa sponsored by an employer. The H1-B visa can only be applied for by an employer, who must state that you are particularly skilled or promising in your field. And, unsurprisingly, many result from successful roles undertaken with OPT visas. 

The H1-B visa lasts for three years, and can be extended to six years. There is also the possibility at the end of securing a Green Card, which gives the right to remain and work in the USA as a permanent resident. However, Green Cards are incredibly difficult to get, especially because the numbers issued are capped, so, as always, if you are keen to remain in the USA, the sooner you start planning and applying, the better.

Be prepared for a long wait for any visa application, these will typically take months, but can take over a year. And, because of America’s strict rules, if you don’t apply early enough, you might find yourself having to leave until the process is completed. 

The US State Department publishes current processing time on its website , and these can vary not just based on the time of year, but even between their processing centres. An application for an OPT placement, will take around 7–8 months. An I-129, submitted by an employer to gain an H1-B visa, is quicker, and usually decided within two months.

The requirement to work in a field related to your studies with an OPT visa will limit the places that you can work. And while any employer can apply for an H1-B for you, there is, obviously, the challenge of first getting that job, and then your employer successfully applying for the visa.

Purdue ranked nation’s No. 1 most recognized public university

Latest GUV rankings place Purdue at top of all U.S. public universities and among the world’s most recognized institutions

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue placed No. 1 among U.S. public universities and was named the No. 9 most recognized university in the world in the 2024-25 Global University Visibility (GUV) rankings , which were announced on Tuesday (July 16).

Conducted by the Washington, D.C.-based firm American Caldwell, the GUV rankings placed Purdue ahead of institutions such as the University of Michigan; the University of California, Berkeley; Yale University; and the University of Toronto (Canada). Purdue came in as the No. 2 public university in the world, behind only Universidade de São Paulo (Brazil); was the top-ranked university in the Big Ten; and outranked every other Indiana university by at least 90 spots overall.

"This year's GUV data demonstrated, once again, Purdue's continued elevation in visibility in the world," Purdue President Mung Chiang said. "This recognition is not just about the Boilermakers' impact, but equally importantly, it's about our marketing, branding and communication team's creative and outstanding work in elevating the university's reputation: They pour their heart each day into this mission with great results, and this ranking is a tribute to them."

The GUV ranking offers a comprehensive evaluation of a university’s global visibility. This year’s ranking incorporated more metrics for tracking each university, but the methodology remained rooted in six key indicators: the frequency and quality of universities’ news mentions; their online footprint; their social media following; the level of public interest; the number of web citations; and the number of website visitors. Purdue University performed well in those categories, notably generating nearly 16 million visits to the recently enhanced  Purdue.edu  — the seventh-highest number of website visitors of any university across the globe — leading to its impressive placement among the world’s most recognized institutions.

In the public interest category, Purdue continues to bolster its worldwide presence and prestige through impactful international partnerships with industry and educational leaders. In April, SK hynix Inc., a market leader in chips manufacturing, announced plans to invest close to $4 billion to build an advanced packaging fabrication and R&D facility for AI products in the Purdue Research Park. Purdue is actively adding to an ever-expanding list of global initiatives with industry leaders in Japan , France , India , Korea , Belgium , Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic as well as educational partners in Greece and England .

Purdue also is the only U.S. higher education institution selected as a leading university partner in all three national hubs funded through the CHIPS and Science Act and announced in 2023-24. The United States has some of the best-ranked universities and colleges in the world. Especially those in the top 10 are globally known names with candidates from all over the world wishing to attend at least in some capacity. This is the result of high-quality programs and virtually instant recognition when it comes to future employment. Students that graduate from programs such as the Harvard Business School are usually recruited right out of college.

Due to those factors, all of these institutions are quite competitive. On average, one in four applicants will be accepted to one of the top 50 colleges. The acceptance rate of the top 50 colleges in the US when it comes to those at the very top is even less, frequently dropping under 10%.

Additionally, your GPA is just one of the factors that might get you accepted. Having a high score of over 3.5 would usually be a pre-requirement for consideration at some schools, but wouldn't be a guarantee of acceptance. Rather, your recommendations, extracurriculars for college , and your college admissions essays will play a major role in if you will receive an acceptance letter from your desired university. Even the easiest Ivy League schools have a rigorous admissions process, so be aware of the competition.

Two aspects that you will want to prove through your application are that you will be able to acquire knowledge at the college level of the institution you are applying to and that you will be able to take charge and be an asset to the school in more ways than just academically. In most recent years, leadership skills have been one of the main factors schools look for when deciding on applicants, frequently looking past test scores if a leadership quality is present.

Additionally, you will want to show relevant activities and extracurriculars. This will help prove your claim that you are someone who will thrive at your desired college not only academically, but as a person as well. Top colleges want to see that they will be making future leaders in a particular field that are happy with where their career has led them.

Finally, starting your college preparation journey early means that you will have ample time to collect everything you need and fill any gaps in your application that might exist. Overall you should consider the following:

• Brainstorm essays
• Prepare for interviews
• Collect recommendation letters
• Pick up extracurriculars

 For example, you might want to join a debate club or a community initiative that will not grow your skills and assist your community but will look great on a college application as well.

You can also inform yourself about any type of aid that might be given by either your municipality or the college itself. All of the top 50 colleges in the US offer some sort of institutional aid, and most applicants are eligible for some sort of support.

3. Meet GPA and SAT/ACT Score Requirements

All of the top US universities require a high GPA to qualify. Generally, to attend one of the top 50 colleges you will need to be at least in the top 20 high school graduates in the US. For Ivy League schools that would mean that your weighted GPA average needs to be over 4.0, going up to 4.15 for MIT and Harvard.

It important to know that your GPA is not an end-all-be-all. All of these requirements are weighted, meaning that specialized classes will be worth more for that particular college. A "B+" student with a 3.3 GPA that is unweighted can have a 4.3 when particular classes are taken into consideration. That is how the average is possible to be over the hypothetical maximum.

Still, your overall grade will play a factor. Having high grades even in subjects that are not your primary area of interest shows the college that you are responsible and have a good work ethic, which is just as important as being good at what you are interested in.

The SAT scores for the top 50 colleges in the US are not as rigorous as the GPA requirement but will still require an above average result. If you are aiming for some of the lower ranked colleges that are still in the top 50, you will want to have a score over 1000. But, if you are aiming for Ivy League, you will need to have at least 1460 to be certain that you are above the line.

Your ACT score, which measures your aptitude in English, mathematics, reading, and science, will also be taken into consideration. For schools with higher acceptance rates you are probable to qualify with any ACT score over 18, letting you to be slightly specialized. But, if you want to enter Harvard, Yale, or UPenn, you will need to be in the very top, with the score over 34 our of the total of 36.

4. Secure Strong Recommendation Letters

5. Demonstrate Legacy and Diversity

Legacy and diversity when it comes to colleges in the US are mostly misunderstood, as they are two sides of the same coin. There is a misconception that any applicant will be admitted solely due to their different life experiences, as it is necessary to otherwise qualify before such factors are taken into account.    

Legacy presumes that the applicant comes from a family of alumni of the college that they are applying for. While such candidates are accepted at a higher rate, acceptance here is not guaranteed either. In most cases, it will portray that the candidate already shares the values of the school and would probably be a good candidate, provided that all other qualifications are met.

When it comes to acceptance rates for the top 50 colleges in the US, your specific life experience is used to separate you from the crowd once you are already exemplary. This means that you wouldn’t be able to attend just because of your background. Such a background might include ethnic, cultural, religious, sexual, or gender minority, or the fact that you have overcome economic adversity to be able to enter college.

When it comes to diversity, it is important to have your diversity college essay portray what your background brings to the table and how your perspective can assist the school overall. Overcoming adversity is one of the core values you should show in such an essay.

6. Write a College Letter of Intent    

Your college application letter, or college letter of intent, should show why you want to attend the academic institution you are applying to. It is important to differentiate the application letter from the personal statement or personal recommendation. With your application letter, you will want to portray the reasons you would like to attend a school and what your expectations are from the institution. This will also include your field of interest, any extracurricular activities you would like to do, as well as aspirations you might have for a post-graduate degree.

Having a clear and concise idea about what you want will push your application to the top of the pile as faculty in all of the top colleges prefers to work with students that know what they want in advance.

7. Cultivate Extracurricular Experiences

Communal, or community-focused, ECA will primarily focus on those activities where you have shown regard to your community and did something to assist it. These can be both formal and informal, ranging from organizing sports and youth groups to volunteering and attending community festivals.

Finally, the personal ECA pertains to what you have done for your personal growth. This will mostly include sports but can focus on music, arts, or design. In many cases, it is possible that the academic, communal, and personal extracurriculars overlap, which will usually give the candidate the best options to attend the institution.    

Take note that admission committees want to see a commitment to any activity. Greater longevity is always better and ideally, you will want to start with those extracurriculars at the start of high school. But, if that is impossible, it is better late than never.

Most candidates would ideally want to show their leadership capabilities through extracurricular activities. But, in cases where that is not possible, it is advisable to portray situations where you have shown leadership through your college essay or recommendation letters.

Overcoming adversity, and especially helping others overcome adversity is highly prized in the top US colleges. Any action you have taken that proves that you are a person who can take charge and accept responsibility will mean a lot for the college.

The best way to show leadership is through community engagement either in school or outside of it. Being a part of student bodies, participating in active tutelage, or championing a local cause is a great show of leadership and should be portrayed on your application activities section.

9. Participate in Social Activity

Social activism doesn't need to be institutionalized in a form of an extracurricular activity. In many cases, applicants will be individuals who have taken up a cause on their own, or share values and beliefs that they publicly defend or advocate for.

In the era of social media, such links can prove useful to your application, as it might show the college that you share the values and ideas that they promote as well. Although such activities might not count as much as institutionalized ones, or your recommendation letters, they can be used to augment your application and give something more to the college addition board to consider.

All activities that include charity, environmentalism, assistance to the youth or elderly, or any similar actions should be portrayed in your application’s activities section. Any media showing proof should also be included.

If the online social activity will be presented, it is advised for applicants to curate their pages and remove any material that would be considered overly juvenile, offensive, or in bad taste. Since most applicants will have pages that are decades old at the time, some older content should be made private to better portray what is on the page.

10. Focus on Self-Development

The goal of your college application should be self-development. Throughout the entire application process, you should show that you wish to grow and that you know how the college you are applying to will help you in that regard.

Being humble and knowing how to place your current accomplishments in context will greatly benefit the process. It will show the college that, while you know your worth, you are not content where you are now and that you wish to grow. That desire for growth and development is what all colleges are looking for and will overlook candidates that believe that they have already achieved everything they need in life.

Activities that show that you are actively collecting skills, which includes music, sports, arts, or any other type of creative endeavors, should be shown in your application’s activities section. Also, letters of recommendation from mentors in these activities can pull a lot of weight depending on the college.

Ideally, you will want to show that the college you are applying to will be instrumental in your growth. This will show that you have a good reason to be there and that you will try your best when it comes to both your academics and extracurriculars.

Although the acceptance rates for the top 50 colleges in the US are relatively low, applicants should not lose hope. If you wish to apply to some of the best schools in the country you should prepare, do your research, and apply to as many colleges as you would like to attend. You should show the admissions committee that you are a great fit for the school and that you will be an asset both during your education and as an alumnus. This can be done with a good application that is personalized to show all of your qualities and how they are the best fit for the institution you are applying for.

The average acceptance rate in US colleges is 67%. Contrary to that, the acceptance rate for the top 40 colleges in the US is only 24%, while those on the very top have those numbers as low as 6%.

The highest acceptance rate college is also the lowest ranking college at #50, which is the Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa.

Year after year, the lowest acceptance rate is for Harvard University. Acceptance to Harvard is ranging from 4% to 8% with a tendency of going downward as the number of applicants increases.

While no college will cite extracurricular activities as mandatory, having experience from relevant activities vastly increases the acceptance rate to any desired college.

Ideally before your first day in high school. Not only will all top colleges require a high GPA, top SATs and ACT scores, they will also want to see long and regular extracurriculars and dedication. While it is never too late to start, the sooner you start the better.

Trump rally shooter identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20-year-old Pennsylvania man. Here's what we know so far.

The gunman who fired shots  at former President Donald Trump in an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Saturday night has been identified by the FBI as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. He  was killed  by a Secret Service sniper, officials said. 

One audience member at the rally, Pennsylvania firefighter  Corey Comperatore , was killed in the shooting, and two other men are in critical condition, officials said. A spokesperson for Allegheny General Hospital said the injured victims were stable, although still in critical condition, on Sunday night.

Who was the shooter?

In a statement, the FBI said: 

"The FBI has identified Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the subject involved in the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump on July 13, in Butler, Pennsylvania. This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and anyone with information that may assist with the investigation is encouraged to submit photos or videos online at  FBI.gov/butler  or call 1-800-CALL-FBI."

Federal investigators said the gunman was not carrying identification, so they analyzed his DNA to provide a biometric confirmation of his identity. 

Crooks was from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, a Pittsburgh suburb about an hour south of Butler. The town in Allegheny County is home to about 30,000 people and has one high school with about 1,300 students.

He graduated from the Community College of Allegheny County in May with an associate in science degree in engineering science, a spokesperson for the college confirmed to CBS News. He was expected to enroll in Robert Morris University in the fall, a spokesperson for the private university in the Pittsburgh area confirmed Monday to CBS News, and had not yet attended classes there.

Bethel Park School District confirmed to CBS Pittsburgh station KDKA that Crooks was a 2022 graduate of Bethel Park High School. School officials pledged to work with law enforcement investigating the shooting, and offered condolences to those affected by the attack. 

Some Bethel Park residents recalled interactions with the gunman and his family in interviews with CBS News Pittsburgh after the shooting.

"I had a really pleasant conversation with them," said Alleghany County councilman Dan Grzybek, who lives on the same street as the shooter and visited the home while campaigning. "I got the perception they were nice people." 

Grzybek said he fears the shooter's actions will "result in further political violence." 

Former high school classmate Jameson Myers, a member of the school's varsity rifle team, told CBS News that Crooks had tried out for the team freshman year but did not make the junior varsity roster and did not return to try out for the team in subsequent years.

He called Crooks a "nice kid who never talked poorly of anyone," and he said, "I never have thought him capable of anything I've seen him do in the last few days."

Fellow classmate Summer Barkley told CBS Pittsburgh reporter Megan Schiller that although Crooks wasn't popular, he still had a group of friends and was a good student beloved by teachers. She said she didn't see any red flags that would lead her to believe he would do something like this.

Mark Sigafoos, who graduated with Crooks and sat near him in class, told CBS News that while it was possible Crooks was bullied in school, he never personally saw it happen. Sigafoos described him as smart, friendly and frequently engaged during class, "definitely nerdy for sure," but said he "never gave off that he was creepy or like a school shooter."

"He seemed like he wouldn't hurt a fly," he said.

Another classmate, Jason Koehler, had a somewhat different view, telling Schiller that Crooks was a loner who was bullied relentlessly for his appearance and wore camo/hunting outfits in class. He said Crooks would often sit in the cafeteria alone before class. He also said Crooks was very COVID-conscious and wore a surgical mask long after they were required.

Crooks also worked at Bethel Park Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center as a dietary aide, according to the facility's administrator. The University of Pittsburgh confirmed Monday that Crooks had been admitted for the fall semester to study mechanical engineering, but according to a statement from the school, he informed the university in March he had decided not to attend.

Crooks also had a membership at a nearby gun club for at least a year. Bill Sellitto, the president of the Clairton Sportsmen's Club in Clairton, Pennsylvania, told CBS News that Crooks was a member.

"We can confirm that Mr. Crooks was a member of the Clairton Sportsmen's Club. Beyond that, the club is unable to make any additional commentary in relation to this matter in light of pending law enforcement investigations," Sellitto said in a statement. "Obviously, the Club fully admonishes the senseless act of violence that occurred yesterday."

A law enforcement source noted that at the time of the shooting, the gunman was wearing a shirt that apparently read "DemolitionRanch," a popular gun-related YouTube channel with over 11 million subscribers. 

What was his motive?

Federal authorities are still investigating what may have prompted the gunman to carry out the shooting, but so far, they say it appears he acted alone.

The FBI is investigating whether the shooter was "motivated by a violent extremist ideology or had any association with additional plotters or co-conspirators," according to an FBI and Department of Homeland Security bulletin sent to law enforcement Monday and obtained by CBS News.

"We do not currently have an identified motive," said Kevin Rojek, FBI Pittsburgh special agent in charge, at a briefing late Saturday, and President Biden said the shooter's motives were still unclear in an address from the Oval Office the following night.

"There is no place in America for this kind of violence, for any violence, ever. Period. No exceptions. We can't allow this violence to become normalized," Mr. Biden said. "The political rhetoric in this country has gotten very heated. It's time to cool it down. We all have a responsibility to do that."

A law enforcement official said early Sunday that no foreign terrorism ties were known at the time and the suspect was not on the radar of law enforcement.

There was also no indication that Crooks ever had a connection to any military branch, officials confirmed to CBS News.

Crooks' political leanings were not immediately clear. He was registered as a Republican voter in Pennsylvania but Federal Election Commission  records show he made a $15 donation to a Democratic-aligned group.

An FBI official said the family of the shooter is cooperating with investigators. 

FBI officials told reporters during a press call Sunday afternoon that determining the motive is the primary objective of the agency's investigation. Officials also said there was no indication of Crooks having mental health issues. 

Crooks did have a social media presence, the FBI officials said Sunday. Agents are combing through his posts and emails but have found nothing so far that reveals a motive or anything threatening. 

In a Monday statement, the FBI confirmed they were able to access the shooter's phone and continue to analyze his electronic devices. Sources told CBS News the phone has so far not yielded any information about his beliefs or a potential motive.

Meanwhile, the public has submitted over 2,000 tips to the FBI for examination.

What weapon did he have?

The gunman was armed with a semiautomatic AR-style rifle, multiple law enforcement sources said. He had purchased a box of ammunition with 50 rounds on the day of the shooting, a law enforcement source confirmed to CBS News on Monday.

Law enforcement sources told CBS News the gun was legally purchased in 2013 and was registered to the shooter's father, Matthew Crooks. 

Investigators found three suspected improvised explosive devices, according to an FBI/DHS bulletin. Two were found in the shooter's car and another was found at his residence.

A source confirmed on Tuesday that authorities found rudimentary bomb-making materials at the gunman's residence and inside his vehicle, which were being analyzed by the FBI. 

What protections were there for Trump?

Trump said  in a social media post that a bullet pierced the upper part of his right ear. He was checked at a local hospital before leaving the area under Secret Service protection and flying to New Jersey late Saturday night. Hi son, Eric Trump, told CBS News on Wednesday that his father didn't have stitches, but had a "nice flesh wound."

Trump's Secret Service detail was given additional assets that are part of the protocol for the presumptive nominee due to his heavy campaigning, which includes additional manpower, counter-sniper, drones and robotic dogs, a law enforcement official said. On Saturday, there were four counter-sniper teams on site, the official said. At least a dozen additional police officers and sheriff's deputies were assisting the Secret Service and Pennsylvania State Police with rally security, the Associated Press reported.

Additionally, Trump's teleprompter is protective and the flag and podium banners are made of steel, the law enforcement official said.

In a statement Sunday morning, U.S. Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said the agency recently "added protective resources and capabilities to the former President's security detail," and said any suggestion that they had rebuffed a request for more security "is absolutely false."  

"The U. S. Secret Service takes threats seriously, and it takes actions based on those threats as warranted," he said. "The U.S. Secret Service is constantly evaluating the very dynamic threat environment and responding to it in the fulfillment of its responsibilities."

What did witnesses see?

Cellphone video  taken at the rally shows attendees pointing toward the gunman and trying to inform authorities that he was there. The video was taken two minutes before the shooter fired at Trump. In it, people are seen running away from the area less than 15 seconds before shots were fired. Moments after that, some people in the crowd start shouting that a man on the roof has a gun.

One man who was at the rally said that soon after Trump started speaking,  he saw a man  "bear crawling" up a building.

"We're pointing at the guy," said the witness, named Greg. "He had a rifle — you could literally see him with a rifle." He told the BBC that he and others told the police and were pointing him out to U.S. Secret Service agents. He estimated that the man was on the roof for "three or four minutes" before shots were heard.

Other witnesses  told CBS Pittsburgh station KDKA  that they also saw the gunman and tried to alert officers before the shooting.

Sequence of events

Details continued to emerge  on Tuesday about the sequence of events leading up to the shooting. In addition to the ammunition that he purchased, the gunman also bought a ladder at Home Depot before the rally on Saturday, two law enforcement sources told CBS News, after it was first reported by  CNN . Home Depot condemned the violence in a statement.

It was unclear whether the shooter brought that ladder to Trump's event, where he ultimately ended up on the roof of a building about 410 feet from the main stage and just outside the bounds of a security perimeter established on the property, according to law enforcement sources and video analyzed by CBS News. 

Along with witnesses who recalled seeing the gunman, multiple law enforcement officers were aware of his presence on the roof just before the shooting happened.

Three snipers from local tactical teams had been deployed to assist Secret Service agents at the rally and were stationed inside the building that the shooter used in the attack, a local law enforcement officer with direct knowledge of the events  told CBS News . The security operations plan had them stationed inside in order to face the rally and scan the crowd through the windows. Local news outlet BeaverCountain.com initially reported details about the three snipers.

One of those snipers saw the gunman outside of the building, looking up at the roof and observing the building before disappearing, according to the officer who spoke to CBS News. The sniper saw the gunman as he returned to the building, sat down and looked at his phone. 

That's when one of the snipers took a picture of the gunman, and then saw the shooter looking through a rangefinder minutes before he tried to assassinate the former president, the officer said. The sniper radioed to the command post right away and tried to send the photo that he'd taken of the gunman up the chain of command.

As this was happening, a local police officer was hoisted up onto the roof of the building by another officer to check the premises, after receiving reports from bystanders who spotted the gunman,  the sheriff of Butler County told  CBS News Pittsburgh . The officer saw the shooter, who pointed the rifle at him. The officer then let go and fell from the roof, the sheriff said.

At that point, the gunman turned to face the rally and fired between six and eight rounds.

When J.D. Vance applied to law school, he viewed it as a pathway out of his chaotic upbringing in working-class Middletown, Ohio.

Then he won a spot at his dream school. Yale Law not only accepted him for the fall of 2010, but also offered a nearly full ride the first year.

Over the next three years, Yale dramatically influenced the trajectory of his life, leading to important connections, a job in venture capital and marriage to a classmate.

Even his memoir, “ Hillbilly Elegy ,” was partly the outgrowth of a paper he wrote in a Yale class. And he leveraged the story, which chronicles his childhood and the alienation of the working class, into a best seller, a movie deal and a political career — winning election to the U.S. Senate in 2022, at age 38.

Despite Yale’s transformative role in his life, Mr. Vance’s relationship with the school could be summed up as conflicted.

Graduating from Yale was “the coolest thing” he had ever done, “at least on paper,” he wrote in his memoir. But he also portrayed himself as an outsider who flubbed law firm interviews and was baffled when asked whether he preferred chardonnay or sauvignon blanc — he had never heard of either. And his classmates remember his sarcasm and cynicism when discussing what he thought of as the school’s liberal bubble.

Trump rally shooter Thomas Crooks: Neighbors, classmates, employer speak

A 20-year-old man from Pennsylvania fired multiple shots at former President Donald Trump at a rally on Saturday evening.

A bullet grazed the presumptive Republican presidential nominee's upper right ear , leaving him bloodied but not seriously injured. One rally attendee was killed in the gunfire and two others were "critically injured," authorities later said.

Here's what we know:

Who is the shooter at the rally?

The FBI identified Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the person behind the assassination attempt. Agency officials released little additional information, saying its investigation remains active and ongoing. They did not indicate what Crooks' motive might have been.

Crooks worked at a nearby nursing home. An administrator there told USA TODAY that the company was shocked to learn of the shooting and that Crooks had passed a background check for his job.

What did Thomas Crooks do at the crime scene?

During the shooting Saturday, Trump's right ear was injured, seconds before he was whisked off stage by Secret Service personnel.  One man attending the rally was killed  and two others were injured; Crooks was then killed by Secret Service agents , authorities said.

FBI special agent Kevin Rojek said on a call with media Sunday afternoon that authorities found "a suspicious device" when they searched the shooter's vehicle. Bomb technicians inspected the device and rendered it safe. 

"I'm not in a position to provide any expertise on the specific components of any potential bombs or suspicious packages," Rojek added. 

Rojek said law enforcement is sending the rifle and Crooks' cell phone, along with other evidence, to the FBI lab in Quantico, Virginia "for processing and exploitation."

"We're in the process of searching his phone," Rojek said.

What is Crooks' background?

Crooks is registered to vote as a Republican in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, according to county voter records. His voter registration status has been active since 2021.

Federal Election Commission records show that in January 2021, Crooks made a $15 donation to the Progressive Turnout Project, a group working to increase voter turnout for Democrats.

Born Sept. 20, 2003, Crooks does not have a criminal record in Pennsylvania, nor has he been sued there, according to state court records. There is no record of him in federal court databases, either.

Where did Thomas Crooks work?

Crooks worked as a dietary aid, a job that generally involves food preparation, at Bethel Park Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation, less than a mile from his home. In a statement provided to USA TODAY on Sunday, Marcie Grimm, the facility's administrator, said she was "shocked and saddened to learn of his involvement."

"Thomas Matthew Crooks performed his job without concern and his background check was clean," Grimm said. "We are fully cooperating with law enforcement officials at this time. Due to the ongoing investigation, we cannot comment further on any specifics. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Former President Trump and the victims impacted by this terrible tragedy. We condemn all acts of violence."

The facility is owned by Kennett Square, Pennsylvania-based Genesis Healthcare. A job posting from the company for a dietary aid in the Pittsburgh area puts the pay at $16 an hour.

Thomas Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania

Crooks' home address is listed in Bethel Park, a suburb in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, voter records show. That three-bedroom brick house has been owned since 1998 by Matthew and Mary Crooks, who appear to be his parents. Telephone calls to the couple were not returned overnight.

Near the Crooks home, Dean Sierka, 52, said he had known Crooks and his parents for years, as neighbors separated by only a few houses. Sierka’s daughter attended school with Crooks from elementary school through Bethel Park High School, and said she remembers him as quiet and shy.

Dean and his daughter said they would see Crooks at least once a week, often when Crooks was walking to work.

“You wouldn’t have expected this,” Dean Sierka said. “The parents and the family are all really nice people.”

At Bethel Park High School

Thomas Crooks graduated two years ago from Bethel Park High School, the Bethel Park School District confirmed. He was included in a 2022 local news article about recipients of a National Math & Science Initiative Star Award at the public high school, which enrolls about 1,300 students.

Jason Kohler attended Bethel Park High School with Crooks and said he remembers the 20-year-old sat alone at lunch and was “bullied almost every day.” Kids picked on Crooks for wearing camouflage to class and his quiet demeanor, Kohler, 21, said.

Since hearing Crooks has been named as the shooter, Kohler has been speaking with classmates who knew him, most of whom are stunned by the news.“It’s really hard to comprehend,” he said.

Sean Eckert said he went to school with Crooks from 5th through 12th grade. He said Crooks always went by “Tom.“

They shared classes together in elementary and middle school. Eckert said Crooks, though "fairly smart," was quiet and rarely spoke up.

Eckert said Crooks did not seem to have many friends. He didn't recall Crooks being playing any sports, being involved in any clubs or student groups or going to popular campus events. He often wore hunting clothes, so Eckert assumed he hunted.

No one in Eckert's group text from high school seemed to know Crooks very well, he said. They were shocked that someone from their town had done this. They were even more surprised that it was Tom Crooks.

Nursing aide turned sniper: Thomas Crooks' mysterious plot to kill Trump

The gaming-oriented online site Discord said Sunday that it had found an account that appeared to be linked to the shooting suspect. The site removed the account, which “was rarely utilized, has not been used in months, and we have found no evidence that it was used to plan this incident, promote violence, or discuss his political views,“ according to a statement from a Discord spokesperson, adding that the company will coordinate closely with law enforcement.

Crooks was a member of the Clairton Sportsmen’s Club, a shooting club about 8 miles from his home. It is a sprawling complex of 180 acres with rifle, pistol and archery ranges, an area for dog training and a clubhouse, according to the club website.An attorney for the club, Robert Bootay III, confirmed Crooks' membership in an email to USA TODAY, but would not offer additional details.

Where is Bethel Park, Pennsylvania?

Bethel Park is a suburb of Pittsburgh and home to more than 32,000 people – about one thousand fewer than four years ago, according to the latest Census estimates. 

The majority-white, mostly college-educated community has a median household income of $102,177. 

Described as a charming retreat from the hustle and bustle of the big city to its north, Bethel Park boasts tree-line streets, friendly neighborhoods and a low crime rate.

Bethel Park is about 42 miles south of Butler, where the Trump rally was held. The leafy suburban street was alive with law enforcement overnight amid a multi-agency response to the shooting. A member of the Allegheny County bomb squad told reporters his team was headed into the house around midnight, but did not say why.

For hours afterward, the scene remained quiet, with deer passing under the police tape and an occasional neighbor stepping out of their house to see what was happening.

John Wolf, a local construction superintendent who lives down the road, said he’d talked with several worried neighbors.

“People are scared,” Wolf said.

How did Crooks shoot at Trump?

Crooks had been positioned on a rooftop more than 100 yards from the rally site, Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi said. Law enforcement recovered an AR-style rifle from the scene.

Joseph Price, special agent in charge of the ATF in Pittsburgh, said the weapon used by the shooter was a rifle.“It was nothing special,” he said in an interview in the parking lot of the Butler Township Municipal Building.

Law enforcement is following up on a “number of suspicious occurrences,” said Lt. Col. George Bivens of the Pennsylvania State Police, including accounts from witnesses who said they tried to flag police about the activity of a person outside the rally moments before the shooting.

The FBI said in a news release that the situation “remains an active and ongoing investigation, and anyone with information that may assist with the investigation is encouraged to submit photos or videos online at  FBI.gov/butler  or call 1-800-CALL-FBI.”
