Sample SOP For PhD In Organic Chemistry

“I have confidence that studying Organic chemistry will be critical in the development of technology to address many of the problems humanity will face in the future. Although the term draws attention to fuel and energy sources, research in organic chemistry extends to all fields – from the health sector to industries. My focus lies in exploring the advanced technologies for the synthesis of nano-organic enzymes for farming.

I have pursued chemistry from schooldays which lead me to select a degree in Industrial chemistry. Ardent to bolster my knowledge, I set myself for higher education through an MS in chemistry immediately after graduation. I was able to leverage my expertise in Synthetic Carbon-based compounds and Bio-organics to join ABC Fertilizers as a production supervisor.

The collective experience of my academic and professional experience has culminated into a passion for conducting research. During my career, I observed that various researches point to the fact that the usage of enzyme-based fertilizers for farming is superior to the current standards. These compounds have the least values in environmental destabilization and human health factors. However, the researches in these fields are not given due priority due to conflict with industrial interests. I believe that I can at least instigate academic attention in this direction.

I am confident that my academic preparation and professional background render me a worthy candidate to your academy. I wish to take this great stride in my career through the XYZ University. I am drawn to your institution primarily due to its research-enthusiastic campus. The collaborative environment will not only allow me to expedite my explorations but also expand my vistas. The ongoing researches by Prof. SR Sandra and her team have raised my interest as well. I look forwards to associating with the team and other eminent members of your institution. I would be delighted to pursue a PhD in Organic Chemistry in such a rich and stimulating atmosphere and wish for an affirmative response from your part.”

How to Write a Statement of Purpose for Graduate School

How to Write a Statement of Purpose for Graduate School

Congrats! You’ve chosen a graduate program , read up on tips for applying to grad school , and even wrote a focused grad school resumé . But if you’re like many students, you’ve left the most daunting part of the application process for last—writing a statement of purpose. The good news is, the task doesn’t have to feel so overwhelming, as long as you break the process down into simple, actionable steps. Below, learn how to write a strong, unique statement of purpose that will impress admissions committees and increase your chances of getting into your dream school.

What is a statement of purpose?

A statement of purpose (SOP), sometimes referred to as a personal statement, is a critical piece of a graduate school application that tells admissions committees who you are, what your academic and professional interests are, and how you’ll add value to the graduate program you’re applying to.

Jared Pierce, associate director of enrollment services at Northeastern University, says a strong statement of purpose can be the deciding factor in a graduate student’s admission.

“Your statement of purpose is where you tell your story about who you are and why you deserve to be a part of the [university’s] community. It gives the admissions committee the chance to get to know you and understand how you’ll add value to the classroom,” he says.

How long should a statement of purpose be?

“A statement of purpose should be between 500 and 1,000 words,” Pierce says, noting that it should typically not exceed a single page. He advises that students use a traditional font at a readable size (11- or 12-pt) and leave enough whitespace in the margins to make the statement easy-to-read. Make sure to double-space the statement if the university has requested it, he adds.

How to Write a Statement of Purpose: A Step-by-Step Guide

Now that you understand how to format a statement of purpose, you can begin drafting your own. Getting started can feel daunting, but Pierce suggests making the process more manageable by breaking down the writing process into four easy steps.

1. Brainstorm your ideas.

First, he says, try to reframe the task at hand and get excited for the opportunity to write your statement of purpose. He explains:

“Throughout the application process, you’re afforded few opportunities to address the committee directly. Here is your chance to truly speak directly to them. Each student arrives at this process with a unique story, including prior jobs, volunteer experience, or undergraduate studies. Think about what makes you you and start outlining.”

When writing your statement of purpose, he suggests asking yourself these key questions:

  • Why do I want this degree?
  • What are my expectations for this degree?
  • What courses or program features excite me the most?
  • Where do I want this degree to take me, professionally and personally?
  • How will my unique professional and personal experiences add value to the program?

Jot these responses down to get your initial thoughts on paper. This will act as your starting point that you’ll use to create an outline and your first draft.

2. Develop an outline.

Next, you’ll want to take the ideas that you’ve identified during the brainstorming process and plug them into an outline that will guide your writing.

An effective outline for your statement of purpose might look something like this:

  • An attention-grabbing hook
  • A brief introduction of yourself and your background as it relates to your motivation behind applying to graduate school
  • Your professional goals as they relate to the program you’re applying to
  • Why you’re interested in the specific school and what you can bring to the table
  • A brief summary of the information presented in the body that emphasizes your qualifications and compatibility with the school

An outline like the one above will give you a roadmap to follow so that your statement of purpose is well-organized and concise.

3. Write the first draft.

Your statement of purpose should communicate who you are and why you are interested in a particular program, but it also needs to be positioned in a way that differentiates you from other applicants.

Admissions professionals already have your transcripts, resumé, and test scores; the statement of purpose is your chance to tell your story in your own words.

When you begin drafting content, make sure to:

  • Provide insight into what drives you , whether that’s professional advancement, personal growth, or both.
  • Demonstrate your interest in the school by addressing the unique features of the program that interest you most. For Northeastern, he says, maybe it’s experiential learning; you’re excited to tackle real-world projects in your desired industry. Or perhaps it’s learning from faculty who are experts in your field of study.
  • Be yourself. It helps to keep your audience in mind while writing, but don’t forget to let your personality shine through. It’s important to be authentic when writing your statement to show the admissions committee who you are and why your unique perspective will add value to the program.

4. Edit and refine your work.

Before you submit your statement of purpose:

  • Make sure you’ve followed all directions thoroughly , including requirements about margins, spacing, and font size.
  • Proofread carefully for grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Remember that a statement of purpose should be between 500 and 1,000 words. If you’ve written far more than this, read through your statement again and edit for clarity and conciseness. Less is often more; articulate your main points strongly and get rid of any “clutter.”
  • Walk away and come back later with a fresh set of eyes. Sometimes your best ideas come when you’re not sitting and staring at your computer.
  • Ask someone you trust to read your statement before you submit it.

Making a Lasting Impression

Your statement of purpose can leave a lasting impression if done well, Pierce says. It provides you with the opportunity to highlight your unique background and skills so that admissions professionals understand why you’re the ideal candidate for the program that you’re applying to. If nothing else, stay focused on what you uniquely bring to the classroom, the program, and the campus community. If you do that, you’ll excel.

how to write sop for phd in chemistry

PHD Chemistry, Chinese Applicant

how to write sop for phd in chemistry

I have found my niche in Academia and I hope to earn the PHD Degree in Chemistry at XXXX so as to devote myself to a professional lifetime of research and teaching in my field. I seek to contribute to my profession and society generally speaking in three ways: cultivating an interest in chemistry on the part of new generations of students, serving the community, and giving my all to research so as to unlock the promise of tomorrow and realize more and more of the great potential of chemistry to make our lives more healthy and comfortable.

I earned my Professional Science Master’s Degree (PSM) in May of 2017 from XXXX University, majoring in Applied and Industrial Chemistry. This experience has left me hungry for further advancement through studies at the doctoral level. I could not be more passionate about scientific research and eager to study towards the PHD in order to attain the optimal foundation for a professional lifetime dedicated primarily towards research. I look forward to cooperating with some of the smartest scientists on the planet, dedicated to resolving practical challenges collectively, joining forces in vigorous, coordinated research. Nothing excites me more than the challenge of analyzing which direction in research has high value and which does not (questions that have already been solved by peers, or issues that are proven to be unsolvable). For me, the establishing of a solid network of relationships with academic circles and participating in international academic conferences is of fundamental importance.

I earned my bachelor’s degree from the Beijing University of Chemical Technology in 2012 specialized in Pharmaceutical Engineering. Throughout the course of my studies in China, I realized that Chemistry was the field to which I have been called; thus, when I came to America for college at IUP, I chose Chemistry as my major and then immediately set to work learning everything that I could about advanced inorganic, organic, analytical, and physical chemistry. My intense efforts were recognized by my winning an academic achievement award for an outstanding GPA.

My research interest include but are not limited to computational chemistry, environmental chemistry, and physical chemistry. I most enjoy simulating electronic structures and molecular processes. For example, I adopted Density Functional Theory (DFT), with the B3LYP functionals at the 6-31G(d) level in Gaussian to explore the optimization structures of MCl 2 (Py) 2 , where the M stands for Ni(II) and Cu(II). I enjoy interdisciplinary exploration in chemistry, linear algebra, quantum chemistry, electrodynamics, and so forth. I have some knowledge of C+, SAS, Gaussian, and Spartan programs, and I am good at mathematics – as demonstrated by the fact that I scored 169 of 170 in the GRE quantitative test.

Another reason why I am especially mesmerized by theoretical chemistry is that, in 2013, the Nobel Prize was given to a research group focused on “Computer Modelling of Chemical Reactions”, a branch of computational chemistry, which leads me to firmly believe that the molecular dynamics of biological macromolecules will continue to be a very hot topic for the foreseeable future. I hope to have a chance at some point to do research in this or a related, supporting area.

I worked especially hard at tracing certain elements in acid mine drainage (AMD) by using the U.S. Geological Survey Coal Quality (COALQUAL) Database to understand halide discharges from AMD to drinking water sources, because I find this branch of environmental chemistry to be especially fascinating. I am also interested in exploring atmospheric chemistry, although I have no relevant research experience in this area. I am especially highly motivated to pursue research in this area in the future, however, because China has an enormous problem with haze resulting from air pollution, with many people these days wearing masks whenever the venture outside. Thus, I look forward to learning all that I can about the chemistry of smog - resulting from emissions from chemical factories, automotive exhaustion, natural gas combustion and utilization, etc.  I seek a full immersion experience in the study of air pollution mechanisms, especially the influence of pollutants on ozone concentrations.

I recently gave a presentation concerning about Chinese culture, custom, and food to other Master’s students who are majoring in counseling to give them a brief description of China and to encourage them to choose China to visit as they prepare for careers as international counselors. After that seminar, the Counseling Department mailed me a thank-you letter with the signatures and thank-you notes of everybody that attended. I was deeply moved by it and this reinforced my passion for academic life and community and illustrates the way in which I seek a full engagement in the future with that community.

I am also in the process of gaining teaching experience since I work part-time as a Chemistry Instructor job at Penn State Schuylkill and also hold a professional tutor job at Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC). I enjoy the time getting along with students and rejoice in their achievement and growth.

For the reasons outlined above, I am confident that I can excel in your rigorous program at Penn. I keenly look forward to receiving a world-class education in Chemistry at XXXX and I thank you for considering my application.

The Humanitarian Side of Chemistry

Chemistry may seem like a narrow subject to an outsider, but having a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry actually lends itself very well to creating a future career in the humanitarian field.

If you’re diving in to the humanitarian arena directly after your first degree, the easiest method of finding work is to become a volunteer or intern. You may have already carried out some work of this kind as part of a study abroad program or completed some other practical field work of this kind. Or you may already have some experience working as a chemist, but desire to take things in a different direction and help others in need through your work. Either way, you now have a lot of different options. Let’s look at a few of these now.

Working to Improve Water Quality

Water quality is a huge problem in developing countries, and widely affects the health of poorer populations all over the planet. According to World Water Day 2010 statistics, 2.5 billion people live without improved sanitation. More than 70% of these people live in Asia. Since then, the figures don’t seem to have improved very much, with almost 1.4 million people in Latin American and the Caribbean area still without water access, according to water.org, where it is also stated that there are over 2.4 million people in a similar situation in Africa and more than 3.1 million people in Southeast, East Asia and Oceania. How can this be? There are more people with a mobile/cell phone than have access to a toilet.

So as you might imagine, your chemistry knowledge and skills could well be in demand in this area. Focusing on a Masters in Hydrology and Water Management could help you become one of the top experts in this field in the world and turn your love of chemistry into a long, effective career right in the middle of the developing world where people can benefit from it the most.

The University of Idaho (uidaho.edu) offers a Water Resources & Professional Science Masters (PSM), where you’d study environmental water quality, drinking water and human health, communications theory in natural resource management, plus many other useful modules.

Other Environmental Areas of Focus

The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville runs an M.Sc. in Environmental Sciences – Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology, a two-year program that prepares students for work in governmental agencies, consulting firms and educational institutions, as well as the nonprofit section – so your options won’t be limited.

Once you’re in the door and working for one of these organizations, your responsibilities might include laboratory research and analysis, solid and hazardous waste management, groundwater pollution control, water management or restoration environment engineering.

The U.S. Department of Labor tells us that the employment rates for environmental scientists and specialists are projected to rise by 15% through 2022 (faster than average), meaning there are plenty of opportunities to be had. However, happily consider that the US might not be the area with the highest demand for graduates of Masters Programs in this particular field.

Mining, Chemical Weapons & Health

Can’t stand water? Fair enough. What about mining? Or working for an organization like the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, winner of the Nobel Prize. In 2009, there was an NGO coalition meeting that attracted members from 29 NGOs from Africa, Asia, the Middle East, East and West Europe and North America, like the Organization for Defending the Sardasht Victims of Chemical Weapons, Society for Chemical Weapons Victims Support and Amman Center for Peace and Development, all of which use volunteers in their good work.

Prefer to get involved in health or biochemistry? A degree or diploma in laboratory technology, and Doctors Without Borders may need you as a laboratory technician to identify the different types of diseases they come across, train local technicians, and many other humanitarian tasks when you’re on assignment.

Inspiring Individuals &Chemists Without Borders

In 2004, a retired chemist in California came up with the idea of creating a group called “Chemists Without Borders”, and he later co-founded this group with Steve Chambreau, a chemist from the US Air Force Research Laboratory at Edwards Air Force Base in Cali. They wanted to highlight and celebrate working to find solutions to humanitarian challenges. Chemists Without Borders now primarily focusses on the quality and arsenic levels of Bangladeshi water sources.

However, there are a myriad of ways chemists can aid in environmental remediation after natural or man-made disasters. One example is using biochar, or horticultural charcoal, to remove harmful pollution and improve soil quality. Ted Wysocki is a materials and process chemical engineer who works at South Meadows Farm and Research Center in Massachusetts in the US. He states that pyrolysing agricultural waste to make biochar can be used to absorb and break down pollutants, and it’s almost as effective as activated carbon in this regard. Farmers can produce and use biochar to absorb radioactive nucleotides and therefore prevent plants from exposure to them.

Industrial pollutants like polychlorinated biphenyls, dibenzodioxins and dibenzofurans can be captured and concentrated. But that’s not all: when they reach high levels, colonies of microbes can be added to the biochar and break down the toxins. Why not get involved with the UK Biochar Research Centre, based at the University of Edinburgh, where they are looking at how biochar functions in the soil environment. Another inspiring chemist that is working for humanitarian causes is Sarah Green, a chemistry professor at Michigan Technological University in the US is currently serving as a Jefferson Fellow with the US State Department and the Agency for International Development. She stated in an article in Chemistry World (rsc.org/chemistryworld) that more chemists are needed to work with government and non-governmental aid organizations, and that people with a chemistry background and an international viewpoint are extremely valuable.

I want to help you get accepted to Graduate School in Chemistry

As someone with a PHD in Religion and Ethics and a historian of the Developing World, I believe that we can all now agrees that the ideal future requires 100% sustainable sources of energy and product feedstocks in adequate amounts to support a high standard of living for all. Which new pathways and technologies based on chemistry, we will emerge to transform our situation for the better. We seek to hold the chemical industry accountable, at the same time that we understand and share their perspectives about energy, oil, natural gas, and coal. These have served as the major raw material feedstocks and energy sources for driving reactions and separations. The industry is now shaping its transformation to sustainable energy and is developing new materials and solutions for energy supply and conversion. I enjoy being involved in considerations of mass and energy balances, capital investment and resource requirements of key alternative energy and feedstock technologies. It is a special pleasure to be of assistance to those applicant who clearly have much to give to our struggle to make realistic progress toward sustainable chemistry in both the short and long term. I am confident that this is where we must place our greatest investment.

Your Expertise Meets Local Knowledge

One of the ways chemists like you can really have an impact on an area, is by combining your specialized knowledge with the knowledge local’s have on that specific region. The Royal Society of Chemistry’s Pan Africa Chemistry Network is working with local scientists to solve local problems, like access to safe drinking water and treatments of diseases to achieve solutions using the region knowledge of those that life in the region. They have carried out joint projects like Project Splash, which began in 2008 in partnership with Unilever, and the Analytical Centre of Excellence hub in Nigeria with Procter & Gamble, as well as other projects across Africa, to great effect by combining knowledge from a far with expertise on the ground.

Areas You Could Focus On

What are some of the other pressing needs chemists can help with? Developing inexpensive and easy to use test kits for mercury, lead, fine particulate carbon and other pollutants that can be found in the air, water and soil; solutions for the eutrophication of freshwater and coastal ecosystems due to chemical fertilizers, which constitutes an environmental threat that could have a powerful humanitarian impact in the future; and alternatively to the use of mercury in small-scale gold mining; better ways to extract useful materials from waste streams; better batteries to electrify developing countries with renewable power, plus many others.

Presenting key information to institutions in a structured manner is essential when searching for samples from the PhD SOP. Applicants should aim for a length ranging from 200 to 1000 words, tailored to the institution’s requirements when writing a PhD personal statement.

It’s important to strike the right balance; a statement should not be too lengthy, which can overload the reader, and it should not be too short, which could lead to a lack of clarity. To ensure that the message is effectively communicated, emphasis is placed on being concise yet informative.

Keep the SOP brief well-organised and tailored to the specific college or program you’re applying to.

Q. How do I start an SOP sample?

Ans. To start a SOP sample effectively, consider opening with a compelling anecdote, a personal reflection, or a statement of purpose that succinctly articulates your motivation and passion for the chosen field of study. This will set the tone for the rest of the document and draw the reader’s attention from the beginning.

Q. What is the format for the SOP statement?

Ans. The format for a Statement of Purpose (SOP) typically includes an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. This introduction should provide an overview of your background and interests. Lastly, the conclusion should summarise your main points and express your enthusiasm for this programme.

Q. Can I reuse an SOP for different Ph.D. programs?

Ans. While it is possible to apply the same overarching theme or experience to each SOP, it is essential to adapt each SOP to the specific requirements of the programme, the faculty, and the research opportunities. Ans. Your Statement of Purpose (SOP) should be approximately one to two pages in length or between 500 and 1,000 words. Emphasising your academic background, research interests, career objectives, and why you are a strong candidate for the programme is essential. Keeping to the specified word count will ensure clarity and keep readers engaged while giving enough information about your qualifications and reasons for doing so.

Q. What tone and writing style should I use in my SOP?

Ans.  Keep your SOP professional and formal, but also add personality and enthusiasm to your chosen area of interest. To effectively communicate your motivation, experience and aspirations, you must be able to do so in a language that is easy to understand. As the Standard Opinion Paper is an official document for academic evaluation, do not be overly informal or superficial.

Q. How can I make my SOP stand out from other applicants?

Ans.  Make your SOP stand out by highlighting unique experiences, points of view and motivation. Share specific examples to highlight your achievements, skills, and passion in this area. Furthermore, demonstrate a deep understanding of the programme and show how your interests align with its objectives. Lastly, you must write a persuasive story which will appeal to the reader and give your candidacy an indelible impression.

SOP for PhD

It’s never easy to get into a renowned university’s PhD program. When faced with a vast number of papers and short deadlines, applicants must exercise extreme caution. The SOP for PhD programs is particularly significant in the never-ending collection of records; it is the only document that you can personalise and include a separate qualification to the admissions committee.

A PhD SOP is mainly concerned with research. The SOP should demonstrate the candidate’s analytical capacity, time-management skills, results, analytics, and reasoning skill. There will be two key points that would grab the interest of the readers. They’ll look to see if you have the potential to apply as a scholar and if you’ll contribute significantly to the university’s prestige. Second, they will assess how your research goals align with those of the organisation, as well as how your research topic can be applied by the university or department.

About the fact that the format of a PhD SOP is similar to that of other courses’ SOPs, there are a few things to keep in mind when composing one.

1. Make a statement for yourself

Tell the admissions committee about you! The whole point of the SOP is for you to tell them who you are. The essay should convey your intellectual trajectory and how to come to the decision to further your education. Do not spend time reminding the university and faculty how wonderful they are and what an honour it will be to learn under such bright minds; they already believe it. They want to know who you are.

2. Explain Why

Answer the following questions: Why are you interested in pursuing this degree? Why do you want to specialise in this area? Why do you want to attend this university in particular?

3. Show Fit

Tell them if you think you’d work into their curriculum. Answer the following question: Why do you think you’d be a good fit for this program? While point one says you should stop lavishing praise on faculty, point two says you should prove that you understand the curriculum. Such information can be found on the program’s website or by communicating with participants. Your SOP should show that you are familiar with the university’s research and how you and your goals integrate into it.

4. Include your research experience and skill sets in your SOP

Highlight some related expertise and knowledge you have to support the admissions committee. Even if your study background is mentioned on your resume, make sure to include it in your SOP. Such training, in any sense, aids in demonstrating your skills and desires. And be certain to note all other research-related skills you have, such as computer programming, software, and writing. Make a point of mentioning every writing award you’ve received; excellent writing skills are a huge bonus.

5. Directly address previous issues

If you have any negative marks on your record, such as bad grades, dropping out of college, or any other problems, you should answer them directly in your message. If it seems that you are ignoring or avoiding a subject, admissions committees may respond negatively. In study, failure is a normal occurrence. It’s a good sign if you can demonstrate how you bounced back from defeats.

6. Proofread, proofread, proofread!

This tip, you’d imagine, should be self-evident. Surprisingly, we also see poorly published essays with typos, bad spelling, addresses to a particular university, and a variety of other errors that could have been easily corrected. And sure you have someone else proofread these papers for you. You’ll be a messy scholar if you write a sloppy SOP for PhD.

7. Be wary of putting so much emphasis on work experience

Please keep in mind that prior work experience in the profession is not necessarily beneficial when applying to PhD programs. It’s fantastic if you can link your job experience to your inspiration and research topics. Be certain to do so. While having 5, 10, or 15 years of experience can make you a great employee or boss, it does not necessarily apply to academic study.

8. Share your Statement

Be sure to share your essays with the people who will be writing your recommendations. This allows them to write better letters of support for you and guarantees that what they say matches what you say. Furthermore, it is fair to ask for input on your essay draughts if you get them finished early enough. They may not have time, but most teachers are prepared to support their former students if they are given sufficient time.

I’m applying for a Ph.D. program in Computer Science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Theoretical Computer Science is the discipline in which I am most interested. Design and Analysis of Algebraic, Combinatorial, and Number Theoretic Algorithms, as well as their implementations, are of particular interest to me. Theory of Computation, Complexity Theory, and Geometric Algorithms are some of the other fields that I am interested in.

My long-term ambition is to be deeply interested in research and teaching in a field that I really enjoy. I look forward to being involved as a faculty at a well-renowned university. A Ph.D. in one of the above fields will be an important first step toward achieving this goal.

My father is an involved scholar in Applied Mathematics, and both of my parents have Ph.D.s in Mathematics. From the time I was in elementary school, this instilled in me a passion for mathematics. On the other hand, I count myself fortunate to have been born into the generation that was first to ride the technological train in India.  As a result, I’ve grown up with computers in several ways, and I’ve seen all of the changes as the age of innovation and creativity has advanced. These two factors have combined to spark my interest in theoretical computer science.

I participated in the International Mathematical Olympiad in high school and was given a gold medal for my exceptional results. I also participated in the Math Kangaroo competition and earned a level 11 test score of 110. I was introduced to simple Combinatory, Graph Theory, and Number Theory as a result of this involvement at a young age. Furthermore, the rigorous preparation and selection program I attended honed my problem-solving skills and increased my confidence. It has also piqued my interest in problem solving and led me to become a frequent reader in many periodicals’ Math problem solving pages.

The National Board of Higher Mathematics chose me as one of 18 undergraduates from across India to enrol in their nurture scheme, which runs concurrently with my formal undergraduate education. The three-year collaboration with the prestigious Tata Institute of Fundamental Research’s School of Mathematics has provided me with a solid foundation in advanced mathematics. This year, I’m studying Commutative Algebra, Algebraic Number Theory, and Functional Analysis as part of my degree. My mathematical experience would ideally be helpful in my studies.

At BITS Pilani University, I am a senior undergraduate student majoring in Computer Science and Information Systems. This department appealed to me because of its academically stimulating climate, excellent professors, and wide range of classes, many of which have a definite mathematical bent. Discrete Structures, Data Structures and Algorithms, Design and Analysis of Algorithms, Theory of Computation, and Operations Research are the five theory courses in which I have earned a AA grade score. Now that I’ve gained a solid base in various fields of computer science, I’m confident that Theoretical Computer Science is my strong suit. In this area, I find that my inspiration, as well as my aptitude, is the strongest.

Because of their many beautiful findings and various applications to real-life problems in Databases, Operating Systems, Graphics, Compilers, and other areas of Computer Science, I find Algorithms and Complexity Theory to be the most appealing areas of Computer Science. I’m excited by the incredible scope for science in these fields that has been shown to me in previous studies, and that’s what I want to do for the rest of my life.

I am persuaded that a career in research and teaching in Theoretical Computer Science is the best one for me because problem solving is the most exciting and satisfying experience I have ever had, and it is an important part of such a career. I’m excited to add to a subject that has taken me so much satisfaction. I’m also excited to be a part of the instruction, because teaching a subject improves one’s own knowledge of it.

Theoretical Computer Science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology is among the best in the world. A chance to work with this community will be a dream come true for any aspiring theoretician.

I’ve discovered that MIT can provide me with the ideal atmosphere for focusing my mental energies into independent studies after carefully studying the department’s brochures and seeking guidance from the institute’s faculty. I am sure that I will be able to meet MIT’s high standards; my strong participation and excitement in my undergraduate studies, as shown by my being ranked first in the institute, can suffice as proof that I possess the requisite qualities.

With my long-term aspirations in mind, my immediate ambition is to obtain a Ph.D. in Computer Science. I understand the level of commitment, perseverance, and determination required for a successful career in research and teaching. I assume that my upbringing has equipped me not only technically, but also mentally, for such a profession.

I am looking forward to entering your department as a graduate student and developing a long and mutually beneficial relationship with you.

When there is nothing else to distinguish you from the other candidates, the admissions committee will always turn to this section of your application. If it’s well-written, it could also help you get a spot if the rest of the application isn’t up to scratch.

A strong PhD declaration of intent does not appear out of anywhere. To create something that can get you recognized, you must put in a lot of effort and dedication. You can begin at least 3 to 4 weeks before the deadline, if not sooner.

Per program has its own set of implementation specifications, so make sure to read them carefully and follow their clear instructions. The average length of an SOP is between 500 and 700 lines.

Although your GPA, GRE ratings, and previous work experience are all relevant, the admissions committee will want to see if you will integrate into their curriculum. This is where the mission statement comes into play. You must demonstrate how well you can fit into their scheme and what you can add to it.

Your statement of intent for PhD admission, as your statement of purpose for MS in computer science admission, should be closely adapted to the program to which you are applying. However, if you’re applying to a variety of different services, this can be a time-consuming process. The majority of people tailor a part of the statement to illustrate their preferences while leaving the rest unchanged. Having said that, the more you portray the program’s goals, the better your chances of success would be.

Admissions officers are normally faculty members who are interested in seeing how well you can blend into their divisions.

The committee will be looking for a candidate who has a good understanding of the research topics they want to pursue. Over all, they’ll like to know if they’ll be able to supply you with the assistance you require. You do not, though, need to be as specific about your study area, and you will be free to adapt it later if your priorities change.

All of the following should be included in your statement of purpose: -What piques your curiosity in your area of study? -What are the fields of study that you want to pursue? -What kind of research have you already done? -What abilities do you possess that will assist you in completing this program? -Why are you interested in working on this particular program? -What do you like to do with your degree after you have it?

Yeah, naming particular members of their faculty for whom you are involved in collaborating will support your submission. It’s also fine to email them directly and ask them questions about their research and current and future ventures.

The easiest way to finish or conclude your PhD SOP is to outline all you’ve written in three to four sentences. Furthermore, if you believe there is anything that can clearly influence the selectors’ decision when reflecting your job graph and personality, make a note of it in your SOP.

We hope that this blog has aided you in beginning to write a PhD SOP in order to apply to your dream university. If you’re still uncertain about what priorities, aspirations, and other core elements to include in an SOP, our experts at Leverage Edu will help you explore your talents, interests, and motives to help you craft a better SOP.

A Statement of Purpose (SOP) is a narrative essay that outlines your academic and professional background, your qualifications, and your reasons for wanting to pursue a doctoral program. It’s an opportunity to showcase your unique experiences and talents and explain how they make you a great fit for the particular school and program. An SOP should be written in a professional yet personal tone, as it should capture your personality, as well as your academic and work experience.

Short answer : No, an SOP and a Letter of Intent (LOI) are not the same. LOI is more of an outline whereas SOP is an in depth statement.

Long answer : An SOP focuses on your academic and professional background, while an LOI focuses more on personal and professional goals and objectives. An SOP should share how your background and experiences have shaped who you are today and how these qualities will enable you to excel in your chosen field. An LOI should be more detailed and specific, and should include more information about your goals and objectives. Additionally, an LOI should provide an overview of you, your skills, and the value you can bring to the program.

Writing an SOP can feel intimidating and overwhelming. However, there are some steps you can take to make the process easier. When writing your SOP, it is important to be honest and sincere. Start by understanding your purpose, writing a clear outline and identifying the key points you want to make. Additionally, use active language and provide evidence to support your claims. Finally, once you have completed your essay, make sure to edit and proofread it thoroughly before submitting.

When writing your SOP, it is important to create an engaging essay that stands out. Make sure to highlight unique elements of your background and experiences, such as your achievements, volunteer work, awards, and other accomplishments. Mention any research you’ve conducted and any internships you’ve completed. This will show the admissions committee that you are committed to the program and the research it encompasses. Additionally, make sure to tell stories, describe how you overcame challenges, and emphasize the impact your work has had on others.

Below is a free SOP template that you can use to get started on writing your own statement for the PhD program of your choice .

The key thing to keep in mind while writing an SOP is to show evidence how you can build on your prior experience to excel in your PhD. It is possible that you may not have the exact skill set or even prior publications but that’s OK as long as you make a convincing case as to how your broader skills generalize.

Think of it this way- you want to convince the University that if given a chance, you are willing to go the extra mile to make sure you succeed and make their investment in you, worthwhile.

Subject: Statement of Purpose for P h D program at [Name of University] *** Introduction *** My name is [Name], and I am applying to the [Name of Program , mention Term for which you are applying ] at [Name of University]. I am a [field] professional with [X] years of experience in the [relevant field]. In the past, I have worked in various capacities, including [list relevant positions], and I am dedicated to furthering my education and pursuing my passion in the field of [field]. *** Body Paragraph 1 *** In my current role as [role – can be as a UG student ], I am responsible for [ broadly list responsibilities]. In this role, I have had the opportunity to \[list accomplishments\] and \[mention research projects\] that I have conducted. I have also gained valuable insights into the field of \[field\] and the potential impact it can have on society. This experience has reaffirmed my commitment to pursuing a P h D and has provided me with the motivation to continue my studies. *** Body Paragraph 2 *** I am confident that the \[Name of Program\] at the \[Name of University\] is the great place for me to continue my studies. With my prior experience, knowledge and dedication, I am confident that I will be successful in my studies and make a meaningful contribution to the field of \[field\].

While most of the programs may not impose rigid formatting guidelines, as a rule of thumb, keep your SOP within 1-2 pages. As for the fonts, try using at least 12 pts to make it easier to read, underline the key takeaways so that the reviewers can get the gist even if they glance through it. For page margins, keep the standard page formatting for an A4/ Letter paper.

Should you create unique SOP for each program?

Yes , it is important to create an individual and unique SOP for each program you are applying to. Each program has its own requirements, and your SOP should be tailored to each specific program.

Additionally, it is important to include information that is relevant to the program you are applying to. This will help you stand out to the admissions committee and demonstrate how you can contribute to the program and the field as a whole.

Having a template at hand should help you save some time but that should in no way be an indicate to copy-paste SOPs across applications as this will diminish your chances of standing apart from the rest of the applicant pool.

Writing an SOP is an important part of applying to any PhD program. To be successful, it is important to be honest and sincere, use active language and provide evidence to back up your claims. Additionally, make sure to highlight unique elements of your background and experiences and tell stories that capture your personality and experience. With these tips in mind, you can create an impactful SOP that will be sure to catch the eye of the admissions committee. Finally, make sure to create a unique SOP for each program you are applying to, as this will help you stand out and demonstrate your commitment to the program.

Writing a killer statement of purpose, by ivan rosa de siqueira: learn more about this important component of grad school applications and how you can write an effective sop.

Sunset over Lovett Hall

Most graduate programs at Rice (and in the United States broadly) will require applicants to submit a Statement of Purpose (SOP) as part of the application process. In my opinion, the main objective of the admissions committee when asking for the SOP is very clear: to get to know you better and understand your motivations to go to graduate school. Even though the SOP is only one of the many components of the application package – which will typically include other important documents such as CV, transcripts, recommendation letters, etc. – the SOP will probably be your only opportunity of talking (writing, actually) about yourself with your own words. CV and transcripts are documents that are somewhat official and bring a list of achievements and accomplishments throughout your career; recommendation letters are written by others and bring an outer perspective of yourself as a potential graduate-level researcher. Conversely, the SOP should provide the committee with information that cannot be explicitly found elsewhere; information that only you can express accurately. That being said, the SOP is a central component of any application process to graduate school.

There are many different ways of constructing a good SOP; the first step, however, should always be the same: double-check the instructions provided by the program and what points should be addressed in your essay. For instance, the following text was adapted from Rice’s Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. [1]

A statement of purpose should address the following questions: Why do you want to obtain a degree in Chemical Engineering? Why are you interested in Rice and in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Rice? What relevant experiences do you have in research, academics, and/or prior jobs? Why do you believe you will be successful in either a thesis or non-thesis degree graduate program? What would you like to do after completing your degree, and what are your long-term career goals?

Overall, the SOP should bring an overview of your academic and professional trajectories, focusing on: (1) why you are interested in that graduate program, (2) what are your academic, professional, and research/extracurricular experiences, (3) how these experiences make you an ideal candidate for that program, and (4) what are your plans after completing your degree. These are the general guidelines followed by most graduate programs (in STEM, at least). Before start the actual writing, I believe you should invest some time in making a detailed timeline of your academic/professional life thus far. Make sure you highlight the main points that marked your path since the beginning of your education. My understanding is that this requires a lot of reflection and self-knowledge; however, I can assure this exercise will be very useful to help you track events chronologically throughout your text.

I now draft the structure of what I consider a good SOP. This is very general; make sure you adapt the actual content to your reality and incorporate some other stylistic changes.

  • Starting an SOP can be very challenging. A reasonable strategy consists of delivering a general “welcome card”, trying to touch upon some of the points highlighted in the program instructions and/or providing the committee with any particular piece of information that distinguishes you from others. Introduce yourself, explain why you want to go to graduate school in that field, why you want to join that program, and what you want to do after graduation (and why a graduate degree from that program is important to achieve your goals). Be brief here; you have the whole SOP to detail and expand on these introductory comments. This initial part should be one paragraph ;
  • Then, describe your academic path starting from when you think you had the first trigger to do research and go to graduate school. You can explore experiences in high school (scientific fairs, internships, academic competitions, etc.), college and/or Master’s (research experiences, publications, talks and presentations in conferences, TA positions, etc.), and prior jobs (internships, consultancies, services, etc.). The chief point here is the following: do not limit yourself to a simple list of facts, otherwise your SOP will essentially become an extended version of your CV. You do not want that. Instead, show what you learned and how you improved with these experiences. Provide examples of how you can work independently, collaborate with others, think critically, communicate your results, etc. – these are fundamental skills in graduate school. Make sure you can align these points with the specifics of the program you are applying to. You obviously want to show a solid background in your field; but, more importantly, you want to demonstrate that you have the necessary skillset and mindset to thrive in graduate school with the support of faculty and resources that program offers. This usually becomes two paragraphs ;
  • Start being more specific about the research lines the program offers. Show evidence that you did your homework and studied the program in depth. Describe your interest in two to three faculty members and their labs; show you understand their research and recent works; show motivation to work in their groups; based on your previous experiences, explain what you will add (skills, ideas, etc.) to their current research. In summary, answer the question: What do you bring to the table? And, just to complement, if you contacted faculty before submitting your application, [2] make sure you mention that in your SOP because that professor might not be on the committee that year. This is one paragraph ;
  • To conclude, work on a short paragraph that summarizes your story and reiterates that going to graduate school and joining that program are key steps in your life plans and research career goals.

Continuing, be truthful and original, and always avoid cliché s. Describe your skills and abilities in detail, and make sure you provide the committee with examples of past research works that support your claims with concrete evidence. More importantly, show how much the program will benefit from having you as a student. Never try to fit your story into a “dream candidate” profile; this profile does not exist and attempts to do this will be easily identified by the committee. Do not hide adversities you have eventually gone through (both personal and academic); instead, describe these problems and explain how you overcame them, what you learned from them, and how they contributed to who you are today. Resilience when dealing with problems, motivation to overcome challenges, and learning from mistakes will be essential in graduate school. Make sure the committee knows you know that.

Writing an SOP is extremely time-consuming. I recommend you start working on yours as soon as you have decided what programs you will be applying to. You will likely need to write many, many versions of your SOP until they converge to a final, satisfactory result. Length and formatting can change depending on program requirements. In general, I recommend 2 pages with editing that will ease the reading (e.g. Arial or Calibri, font 12, spacing 1.5-2, standard paragraphs and margins, etc.). Some programs might be a bit more demanding and determine a maximum number of words (e.g. 500 or 1000). Expressing ideas clearly and concisely is key in graduate school; use the SOP to demonstrate you master this skill. In contrast to other languages such as Brazilian Portuguese (I am Brazilian), English allows for a very direct and effective writing communication. Go straight to the points you want to highlight and do not waste space (sometimes precious) with sentences that do not add relevant information about yourself as a future graduate student. The committee will have hundreds of SOP to go through; do not make yours boring.

The committee will know if you are an international student, and the committee members will not expect to read an essay written by Shakespeare. Be careful with your writing and avoid naive mistakes, but do not spend too much energy trying to improve your vocabulary beyond what you are comfortable working with. Avoid too many adjectives and adverbs; use short, direct sentences in an active voice. If possible, you might want to ask some friends to review your SOP. However, be careful. First, make sure your reviewers are aware of the SOP overall goal in the application process and are sufficiently proficient in written English; second, do not ask many people for feedback because it might become unfeasible to incorporate so many different suggestions in a single text. Finally, keep in mind that you know your story better than anyone else and that the SOP should bring your own perspective about yourself.

[1] Notice that this department offers two different graduate programs: a PhD program (which requires a thesis) and Professional Master’s program (which does not require a thesis). Both require an SOP as part of the application process.

[2] Contacting faculty members (potential research advisors) in advance is another important step of the application process. Review the post  here for some tips.

SOP For PhD Sample 1

“If you are working on something exciting that you really care about, you don’t have to be pushed. The vision pulls you.” - Steve Jobs

To begin, I was fascinated by the importance of Pharmaceutical Sciences in today's healthcare system. It is a vast topic with several research potentials, including the exploration and modification of chemical properties that make up medications with therapeutic effects in order to improve patient compliance. The global healthcare industry has recently had to deal with new epidemics, which has necessitated rigorous innovation.

Novel Drug Delivery Systems (NDDS) - post-Oral Delivery, such as low-cost Microrobots, Nanotubes, and Microneedles, are capable of bridging the gap between scientific research and commercial need. Carbon Nanotubes, in particular, may easily enter cells, delivering medications straight to the cytoplasm or nucleus, improving therapeutic efficacy and reducing the risk of side effects. Nanotechnology for Drug Delivery has long been promising, and it may now be used in Gene Therapy, Active Targeting, Controlled and Sustained Drug Release, and Synergistic Multimodal Therapies to enhance treatments for illnesses such as Bronchial, Colorectal, and Prostate malignancies. I'm considering pursuing a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences because I want to undertake such cutting-edge research.

My time as a Pharmacy undergraduate at XYZ University was a turning point in my career since I was immersed in a cutting-edge curriculum that valued both academic underpinnings and practical applications equally. Courses like 'Pharmaceutical Technology,' 'Pharmaceutical Analysis,' 'Pharmacognosy,' and 'Medicinal Chemistry,' among others, provided me with a solid foundation in pharmacy concepts, which was amplified by the laboratory sessions, resulting in an 8.4 CGPA. I became interested in Formulations and Drug Delivery Systems in the final semesters of my undergraduate studies, which led to my Master's in Pharmaceutics. Advanced courses like Nanotechnology, Targeted Drug Delivery and Computer-Aided Design, and Drug Delivery Systems honed my ability to look at a problem and explore different possible outcomes that can be achieved by NDDS, such as my Tramadol HCL analgesic patch project, where Transdermal Drug Delivery not only improved the 'Controlled' release of the drug but also made it possible at minute levels of medicament.

Following my Master's, I interned with XYZ Pharma Pvt. Ltd. as a Graduate Trainee. During this time, I was able to get experience in several elements of formulation, such as coating Tablets, filling Capsules, and using HPLC and GC. I am now undergoing training at XYZ Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd., where laboratory professionals are assisting me in gaining a better understanding of the complicated research organisations and frameworks. In the manufacturing unit for topical dosage forms, I've been aiding in the execution of product designs according to protocol, as well as doing pre formulation tests and reviewing data to determine compatibility and delivery possibilities.

It's amazing to observe how a chemical that's ineffective in normal formulations does miracles in NDDS. Aside from Controlled Systems, as part of my Master's thesis. Aside from academics, I was an enthusiastic member of college extracurriculars, winning several honours in Inter-University Art and Sports contests.

I'm dedicated to the field of pharmaceutical sciences. My Research's in-vitro testing and analytical methodologies, as well as my Internship's pre-formulation and molecular evaluation studies, improved my conceptual comprehension of the topic. I aim to get the necessary skills in Drug Delivery with the aid of a PhD, which will not only keep me up to date on advances in Pharmaceutics but also assist me in exploring creative mediums to increase the therapeutic effects of medications.

The United States has traditionally been at the forefront of science and technology development, providing opportunities to work on cutting-edge initiatives. XYZ University is a major contributor to high-quality pharmaceutical research. I wish to deepen my knowledge in the Pharmaceutical Sciences, and I feel that your university is the best location to do it since it has experienced faculty, a vibrant academic environment, and a graduate programme that balances high-quality teaching with research infrastructure. Professors XYZ, XYZ, and XYZ are doing work that I find extremely intriguing and well-suited to my research interests.

My education will reinforce principles that will aid in the research of advanced Pharmaceutical Sciences concepts. This programme provides me with an excellent opportunity to take the next step toward becoming a researcher capable of expanding my horizons of care and concern. Healthcare that is easily accessible, efficient, and cost-effective for everybody is a pressing necessity.

I hope the Admissions Committee will consider my application favourably, and I look forward to joining your esteemed institution's Fall 2023 PhD cohort.

SOP For PhD Sample 2

My interest in research, particularly finance-related research, arose from a variety of previous undertakings including Financial Analysis. Furthermore, I have actively employed research approaches such as surveys, ethnography, questionnaires, and case studies as a result of my experiences with undergraduate (UG) thesis research and graduate projects. As a result, I feel that having a thorough understanding of the essential components of Finance would enable me to engage in problem-solving, share relevant information, and encourage people to see things in new ways, which has prompted me to seek a PhD in Finance.

I hope the Admissions Committee will consider my application favourably, and I look forward to joining your esteemed institution's Fall 2022 PhD cohort.

Mathematics was always my strong suit as a kid. I also pursued a minor in Mathematics at XYZ University. The interdisciplinary study is widely recognised and promoted. Furthermore, I was able to improve my knowledge of areas such as probability and statistics, linear regression for predictive analysis, and numerical analysis and optimization - all of which have applications in financial data analysis.

My study, titled "XYZ Businesses of India: A Time-Dependent Analysis," used Data Envelopment Analysis to evaluate the performance of private and public-sector ABCS corporations in India over four years (2013-2016). We used the Solver function in MS Excel to complete our task. As part of this project, we built multiple optimization models, did Sensitivity Analysis, Malmquist Productivity Indexing, and curve-fitting. The project experience reinforced for me the need for patience and diligence in doing effective data analysis. It also taught me about financial jargon in financial statements and how to read an organization's annual report in depth. I, therefore, reasoned that performing due diligence on a large scale would not only assure the sustainable use of resources but would also greatly enhance such firms' internal rate of return.

Following my undergraduate education, I went on to XYZ to pursue doctoral studies in Engineering Management. The training reinforced the idea that in some industries, financial analysis, engineering, and business are so linked that knowledge of one without the understanding of the others is worthless. In addition, my time at XYZ opened my eyes to the almost endless possibilities that were within the broad canopy of management, particularly financial management. I immediately realised that I wanted to learn more about finance. To that goal, I registered for the CFA Level 1 exam in December 2020. In addition, I took an elective called Economic Foundations for Public Decision Making to study the fundamental economic concepts that are used in finance all the time.

During the summer of 2020, I worked at XYZ on a research project to build the graduate course "Strategies for Innovation and Growth" and prepare case studies for the incoming class. I lead a team of six people and wrote two case studies on American startups pursuing the triple-bottom-line strategy. I also worked with XYZ, a technology company in Japan, as part of the Practice of Consulting course, to revamp their business strategy and product improvements on two of their products.

I'm looking forward to working with Dr XYZ and Dr XYZ on topics such as international finance, asset pricing, corporate finance, and family businesses. I'm particularly interested in Dr XYZ's study on 'Governance Problems in Closely Held Corporations.' I'm curious about how majority and minority shareholders affect such firms' return on assets and expense-to-sales ratios. I feel that my comprehension of financial principles, which I've had since I was a child, along with my desire to study, will make me a valuable member of the XYZ student community.

As a PhD student, I wish to take on a variety of duties during the programme in order to improve academic rigour, autonomous judgement, and intellectual honesty. I am convinced that my experiences at XYZ will provide me with a solid foundation in financial principles, allowing me to pursue a successful academic career. I eagerly anticipate the difficulties of a PhD in Finance programme at your illustrious university.

Hi everyone,

:)

I tried to keep it 1 page long because I heard that faculty members in the US do not like to see statements any longer than that. However, I had to omit that I have one manuscript in preparation, one poster presentation, voluntary activities etc. What do you think? Should I replace any information on my SOP by those?

To the admissions committee,

I am writing on behalf of my application for the Doctoral program in Chemistry at the University of X. I have earned a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the Federal University of Viçosa (Brazil) in 2015 and a Master's degree in Inorganic Chemistry from the Federal University of Minas Gerais in 2017. The strong research on catalysis and new synthetic methodologies conducted in your institution made me very interested in pursuing graduate studies at your department.

Since sophomore year in college, I have been involved in research projects in the interface between organic and inorganic chemistry, studying new ways to transform abundant and cheap substances into valuable compounds using less toxic reagents and generating less waste. In my Master's thesis I managed to transform compounds extracted from pine trees into biologically-active amines in a one-pot procedure using ethanol instead of toluene as a solvent, a greener approach to the synthesis of amines that led to higher yields and selectivities than the traditional systems already used. In addition, I had the opportunity to take graduate-level courses about group theory, advanced mass spectrometry, nanotechnology and experimental nuclear magnetic resonance which contributed to my understanding of core concepts of my research area. I have also spent the 2012-2013 academic year in the U.S performing research at the University of California Davis as a recipient of the Science Without Borders scholarship. Studying abroad has introduced me to state-of-the-art science and allowed me to operate new instruments and learn new techniques not available in my home institution, besides the rich cultural exchange. In 2016, the American Chemical Society awarded me with a scholarship to travel to Panama, where I received intensive training on scientific outreach and communication. This opportunity has  impacted the way I think chemistry can serve our society and made me realize I can do more for my country than I ever expected through science. Brazil has numerous economic and social inequality problems, and I think one of the most powerful ways to overcome them is through international scientific cooperation and knowledge exchange.

Research experience combined with extensive theoretical and practical training received during the baccalaureate and graduate-level courses encouraged me to take a step further in my career as a scientist. My professional goal is to become highly qualified in the field of catalysis and teach at an institution committed to social, economic, environmental and scientific development in my country. The PhD program in Chemistry at the University of Utah is a very good fit for me since it has a structure with all the resources I need to advance in my research, with Dr. X and Dr. Y and Dr. Z groups being very active and relevant to my field. The NMR facility have the capability of multinuclear detection, which is indispensable for my work in the frontier of organometallic chemistry and synthesis, as well as modern mass and optical spectrometers.

I am confident that the aforementioned characteristics make me a viable candidate for this graduate program. I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss my candidacy with the department faculty and provide further information. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Brazil has numerous economic and social inequality problems ,  and I think one of the most powerful ways to overcome them is through international scientific cooperation and knowledge exchange.

To be honest, I feel like you tell more than you show - you need to also consider why you are a fit for them, not just how you fit there. I don't feel you really explain why you're a good fit for particular groups. What about their research interests you - you don't even mention the research they do...

Thanks for the advice, as someone not experienced in writing statements of purpose I need all the help you can give. I thought about discussing my qualifications to prove I am a good fit for the program, but I thought it would be pretentious of me. Any advice on how should I put my qualifications without looking obnoxious?

Would it be so bad if my SOP exceeds 1 page? Because I think it will be impossible to add any information to this and keep it one page long...

I tried to add some information, I don't know if it got better or worse though.

I earned a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the Federal University of Viçosa (Brazil) in 2015 and a Master's degree in Inorganic Chemistry from the Federal University of Minas Gerais in 2017. The strong research on catalysis and new synthetic methodologies conducted in your institution made me very interested in pursuing graduate studies at your department.

Since sophomore year in college, I have been involved in research projects at the interface between organic and inorganic chemistry. In my Master's work I was mentored by Dr. Eduardo Santos (one of the most prominent catalysis researchers in Brazil) , transforming olefins extracted from pine trees into biologically-active amines through a Rh-catalyzed one-pot procedure in ethanol instead of toluene , a greener approach to the synthesis of amines that led to higher yields and selectivities than the traditional systems already used. In addition, I took graduate-level courses on group theory, advanced mass spectrometry, nanotechnology and received practical training from companies such as Bruker and Shimadzu to operate equipment such as NMR spectrometers, chromatographs, electron microscopes and others. These advanced courses contributed to my understanding of core concepts of my research area as well as for my skills to independently operate essential equipment in my field . I have also spent the 2012-2013 academic year in the U.S performing research on chemical ecology at the University of California Davis as a Science Without Borders Scholar. Studying abroad has introduced me to cutting-edge science, allowing me to operate new instruments and learn new techniques not available in my home institution, besides the rich cultural exchange. In 2016, the American Chemical Society awarded me with a scholarship to travel to Panama, where I received intensive training on scientific outreach and communication, skills that are imperative for a graduate student, this opportunity has  impacted the way I think chemistry can serve our society and made me realize I can do more for my country than I ever expected through science. Brazil has numerous economic and social inequality problems, and being raised here gave me perspectives that I think will be useful not only during graduate studies but also throughout my career as a scientist. Unfortunately, Brazil has been facing major cuts in science budget since the last two years and in the actual scenario I am not able to do impactful research here and, for me, the most powerful way to overcome economic and social hardship is through international scientific cooperation and knowledge exchange.

I believe my research skills and the willingness to help others understand the importance of science for sustainable development are the strongest parts of my application. As a creative, responsible, result-driven and focused person, I want to be able to help the academic community not merely by doing outstanding research in catalysis but also by participating actively in discussions within the department and the university, raising awareness on the importance of diversity and sustainability in academia. I would also appreciate the opportunity to help students from the Department of Languages learning portuguese, my native language, in informal conversation sessions with the Brazilian Club. My professional objective is to become highly qualified in the field of catalysis and teach at an institution committed to social, economic, environmental and scientific development in my country. Earning a PhD from an institution known for high-quality standards and few research constraints on their students such as the University of Utah would help me achieving this career goal.

After a thorough search, I found that the PhD program in Chemistry at the University of Utah is a very good fit for me since it has a structure with all the resources I need to advance in my career. Dr. Sigman research on metal-catalyzed coupling reactions is specifically what I want to investigate as a graduate student, I think coupling reactions can pave the way for more efficient biorenewable olefins valorization, while also generating less waste than traditional methods of alkene modification. The department also have other faculty members that I would feel honoured to work with, such as Dr. Louis and Dr. Roberts, both being very active and relevant to organometallic catalysis and synthetic development. The state-of-the-art department facilities such as NMR laboratories will offer me the advantage and privilege to be creative in the finding of new reactions and explore the chemistry at a mechanistic level, since the equipment have the capability of multinuclear detection, solid state and ultra-low temperature analysis, which are imprescindible for my work in the frontier of organometallic chemistry and synthesis, as well as modern mass and optical spectrometers which can corroborate my results. The collegiality of the department members is also a positive feature to me, since I am an extroverted and sociable person who would enjoy such an environment to make new friends and create a network of scientific contacts for future collaborations.

You don't need to include it if it's in your CV (which it should be). The SOP is not a second CV -- you need to include information that they can't get from there.

General piece of advice, try to convey meaning with less words...

Your section:

Dr. Sigman research on metal-catalyzed coupling reactions is specifically what I want to investigate as a graduate student, I think coupling reactions can pave the way for more efficient biorenewable olefins valorization, while also generating less waste than traditional methods of alkene modification.

I am interested in Dr. Sigman's research on metal-catalyzed coupling reactions towards more efficient biorenewable olefins valorization compared to traditional alkene modifications.

See how I've basically said the same thing with like, half the space? It cleans up your writing and removes the fluff that isn't needed. It gives you more space to write something meaningful. Avoid saying things that are obvious - like, generating "less waste" and "more efficient" don't really need to be stated together. They're almost the same thing and you waste space - just use one of them.

How do I write a Statement of Purpose for my grad school application?

by Markus Deserno | Oct 30, 2020 | Uncategorized

It’s that time of the year again: grad school applications are soon due ! You have dutifully selected a good set of schools, following the “reach/middle/safe” principle; you’ve secured writers for your letters of recommendation; you’ve filled out many forms; maybe you also have submitted GRE or TOEFL or IELTS scores—and now you look with dread at that pristinely empty text document on the screen in front of you, titled “Statement of Purpose”. The cursor goes blink, but your mind is blank.

To be honest: I don’t know for sure what that feels like. I have never applied for graduate school in the US. But I have served on graduate school admissions committees here; in fact, I have chaired them for many years. And in that position I have read hundreds upon hundreds of Statements of Purpose. I would like to think that I’ve pretty much seen it all. And with that knowledge, earned by experience if not by practice, I would like to share a few tips for those of you who are understandably unsure how to write this important document. As a warning : this is going to be tailored to applications to physics graduate school, since this is my background. I suspect that a fair amount of it translates to other fields; but considering the significantly different cultures in other disciplines (other sciences, or engineering, or the humanities, or the arts) I advise caution in following my suggestions in fields remote from their primary provenance.

So, without further ado, here’s a list of thoughts you might find helpful:

1. What is your purpose ?

Why do you want to go to graduate school? What do you hope to achieve? What lights your fire? Brainstorm your motivation for this big step! This, of course, is important much beyond the immediate task of writing an SOP. It is therefore curious that quite a number of people seem to stumble into this without giving it some careful thought. Or at least one would think that, given how their SOPs are devoid of a clearly articulated purpose, save maybe for some clichés about how they’ve always liked physics. (There’s nothing wrong about going to physics graduate school because you love physics; but when you say so, be original . And check point 4 below.)

There are so many things that could drive you: a genuine desire to do real research, after having been fascinated by it during undergrad projects. A specific problem that’s been with you for a long time that you wish to have a go at. The desire to help people. A profound interest in physics education. The hope to break the glass ceiling of expectations you have been living under. Whatever it is—make sure you are clear about it yourself and then tell the committee about it ! Having deeply reflected about your motivation and then speaking about it compellingly and with earnest conviction makes your SOP truly genuine.

2. What does the department look for?

To counterbalance the first point: remember that grad school is a two-way road. You want to get something out of it, but so does the department that accepts you . After all, they pay you ! For what?

A mental exercise that is very useful when preparing an SOP—or, for that matter, any piece of writing in which you want to sway someone else—is to  put yourself into their position . What are they looking for? What matters to them? What would they consider a red flag? What would strike them as a winning argument? Don’t do this superficially. Really try to flip your perspective. This should help you answer the question whether they care about your rad skills as a skateboarder (probably not), or about the many hours of chemistry tutoring you did in high school (probably yes).

To give you a couple of examples, here’s what in my experience a department cares about:

  • Will you pass the first 1-2 years of graduate courses ? Because if you don’t, their significant investment into you (tuition and stipend for the first two years could sum up to $100k!) does not yield a return. This is the biggest reason why they care about your GPA, the courses you took, and whether you did well in grad courses you decided to take. This is also what tests like the physics GRE are good at predicting.
  • Do you realize how hard it is to push the boundary of knowledge ? Real-world research is often the art of persevering in a tenacious fight against obdurate obstacles. There are many challenges, confusions, set-backs, and fresh starts. And this requires a lot of stamina, dedication, and frustration tolerance. Do you have that in you ? The admissions committee will look for any indication that you’re ready for this. That’s why they are so very eager to see undergrad research beyond curated fail-safe lab courses. Research that could have gone wrong, or maybe even did . It doesn’t much matter whether the field was particularly closely related to what you may wish to pursue in grad school, as long as you saw the real thing you now are eagerly signing up for. [BTW, before this sounds too discouraging: when you finally make that scientific breakthrough, you will feel like the king of the world. The sense of profound accomplishment is incredible, but also hard earned. This correlation holds of course way beyond physics.]
  • Do you understand your responsibilities ? Once you join a research group, your work will contribute to their scientific progress. They rely on you to make that experiment succeed, or get that calculation done. They need you to be a dedicated player in a team that strives for success, recognition, and future grant money. Do you understand that this will be part of your job? That grad school is not only a journey toward your own personal scientific growth, but also a commitment to pull your weight in a team that relies on you?

3. Focus on your growth as a young scientist

An SOP is different from a college application essay. Many applicants feel tempted to write about transformative experiences in their childhood, events that got them on the trajectory on which they are now. This is indeed a great opening for an SOP, but that’s it: an opening . It should quickly lead to what the committee really wants to hear: how have you grown academically, what research experience and skills have you gained, what compels you to apply to grad school (and why this grad school).

Of course, you don’t just want to rattle off your projects and skills. Good writing creates context. And a good school cares about you as a person, not just as a replaceable “science worker”. But don’t forget that you apply for a slot in a competitive program in a highly technical discipline. Focus on what matters for that. For instance, you can write about how you go about solving problems. Or how you deal with road-blocks and struggles (because overcoming roadblocks and struggles is going to be a big part of your grad student life). How your academic record has prepared you for what you want to do (but don’t just reiterate your grades—the committee has them anyways). If you have a talent for teaching and explaining things, you can point that out, too. They might need you as a TA in a semester when your advisor is short in funding, and you will at some point have to give talks and write papers.

4. Avoid boilerplate

One of the really important things you want to achieve in your SOP is to become a memorable applicant , and not just another number in an Excel sheet, sorted—god forbid!—by GPA. Someone who a committee member might bring up in a discussion when there are still slots to fill (and there always are) after all the “obvious” cases have been admitted, and there are dozens upon dozens of candidates who look virtually indistinguishable by the numbers. If at that moment a committee member recalls you and starts talking about you, then you have almost won. Why? Because among dozens of candidates, everyone of whom could in principle be admitted, you often end up admitting those who for whatever reason you are talking about. So to be memorable is very important. (Of course, you don’t want to be memorable for a particularly poor SOP either. In this case, bad press isn’t better than no press at all.)

If that is your goal, then one of the best ways to shoot yourself in the foot is to write boilerplate verbiage. You are not going to stand out by recycling the bromides of the olden days, by dutifully checking off all the stereotypes of the passionate budding scientist who is enthralled by physics. I cannot count the number of times I have read the phrase “Since early childhood I have been fascinated by the unfathomable beauty of nature.” Now, it might be totally true that this describes you very well. But you have to find a way to say it that is not a platitude.

Some people seem to believe the solution to this problem is to make copious use of a thesaurus (“unfathomable!”). Don’t be tempted to do that . A thesaurus is great if you want to find the one word that fits best in a given context, and there are often much better words than the ones that first spring to mind. But it should not be used to bloat your writing into an orgy of pretentious swank. That’s not you. That’s not authentic. And nobody likes reading it.

5. Show, don’t tell

You want to come across as smart , diligent , creative , motivated —all the good stuff. At the same time, most people have a natural aversion to heaping praise upon themselves. When we coach students how to prepare a strong application for grad school (or a job in industry), we tell them that they need to overcome that natural (and quite likable) hesitance to brag. But it seems we don’t quite tell them how to actually do this gracefully, and so a surprisingly large number of students seem to come away with the idea that they simply need to conquer their embarrassment and pin all these praising words onto themselves. Awkwardness ensues instantly.

But how does one talk praisingly about oneself? It’s not that hard, actually, and the trick is: show, don’t tell . Rather than calling yourself “clever”, give an example where your cleverness clearly showed; for instance that episode when you solved a problem that your team was flummoxed by and you figured it out. Instead of calling yourself “hard-working”, talk about that episode where you collected that crucial bit of data at 2am on that week-long trip to the synchrotron. And instead of calling yourself “motivated” and “dedicated”, describe how you discussed your REU options and additional course offerings with your academic advisor, in order to be best prepared for graduate school. True, doing it this way isn’t quite as concise as using peppy words. But it says a lot more about you, is much more convincing, and much less awkward.

There is still a place for those coveted praise-words, but it is not in your SOP. It is in the letters of recommendation you have asked your mentors and advisors to write about you. If they have accepted to support your application, then almost surely they want to write a strong letter, and since they don’t want to write a lot (and the committee doesn’t want to read a lot…), succinct words of praise flow naturally and are entirely unobjectionable.

Incidentally, pro tip : even if your letter writers want to write endorsingly, that doesn’t mean they have all the information to do it well. They write a lot of letters, and they have a lot of students. And their brains are often more foggy than you would believe. (Trust me, I know. I’m the aging owner of one of those brains.) For that reason, I ask the students I promised a letter to provide me with a “ brag sheet ” that lists the items they are most proud of and wish me to brag about. With some context, so that I can write more knowledgeably about it. If you’re comfortable with this, offer your letter writers such a document.

6. Check out their webpage

A strong SOP should be tailored to the place you apply to. Have a section towards the end in which you explain how you see yourself fitting into their program. Are you eager to pursue condensed matter physics and are impressed by the local “Center for the Technology of Very Small Things” they have built over the years? Tell them! (Professors are vain and like to be flattered. But know the line between sweet-talk and ingratiation!) Are there professors in biophysics whose work you have used during one of your undergraduate projects? Tell them! Has your advisor pointed you to a group at their place that does amazing work and you’d like to become a part of that? Tell them! When you were selecting the schools you ultimately decided to apply to, browsing their webpage and making sure that the research topics and scientific opportunities available at that place align with your own personal interest was surely a big part of the “research” you did on them. Now you have the chance to tell them that, yes, their program excites you. Here’s the reason why, among all the many grad schools in the country, you’ve picked theirs to apply to.

Documenting that you have checked out the place you are applying to, are familiar with their strength and ambitions, know who does what, and where you’d fit in, is a great way to also show that you care about them . That you take their graduate program seriously. You have done your homework. This almost always gives you a leg up. But you should be careful about two things: first, webpages are often woefully outdated not quite up to date, and that famous professor you say you would totally love to work with might long be an emeritus (or, ahem, worse). And second, you are at the very beginning of your career as a scientist and physicist. You ain’t seen nothing yet! At your stage of career you haven’t (yet) earned the right to be opinionated about what fields of physics are worthy of pursuit.  Don’t be that person who is hell-bent on a career in, say, galactic astrophysics, after having done a 6-week summer REU project on galactic astrophysics. It is almost always wise to be flexible. (Unless you are really really sure you know what you want to do.)

Tailoring your SOP like this might take time. And you unfortunately might not have all that time, depending on how many applications you plan to send out. If so, then restrict this extra work to those places you are most eager to get in.

7. Be concise

After all these recommendations, all these many things you can or should or might want to write about, here comes the hardest part: do it concisely (albeit not tersely ). Faculty on admissions committees have to read dozens, sometimes hundreds of SOPs, and if any one of them drones on for just a tad too long, they lose interest in the writing— and maybe in you .

It is admittedly really hard to talk about all of the stuff you need to cover in something like 2 pages . But hey, that’s yet another skill you need to ultimately learn: how to write succinctly . ( Tip : don’t duplicate anything the committee already has in some other form , such as CV and grades, unless you expressly want to emphasize something very important.) If your writing shows that you have some talent in communicating, the committee will be rather pleased. This is a student who might actually produce a respectable first draft of a paper! Hence, your efforts to polish your SOP are not wasted.

You can easily check the length of your SOP; but whether it’s actually good often requires a second pair of eyes. Give it to somebody else for honest criticism. Ideally someone who knows how these documents are read, like your research advisor. Your friends might offer you help, and they might have great ideas and opinions to boot; but they are likely just as hazy about what really constitutes a good document as you are. Get help from people who know because they have been in the business for a while.

OK, that’s enough for now. Lots of advice! I probably forgot some things, or been unclear about others. Some of this might strike you as opinionated, and some of it almost surely is. So take it with a grain of salt. I will most likely update this document at some point—based also on feedback you are welcome to leave in the comments.

This is supposed to be a helpful list of thoughts that make you understand how the people on the other end of the process tend to read your application. But people vary in their tastes, departments have different priorities, and conventions for how to write documents such as an SOP evolve over time. Feel free to flout every single one of my recommendations, provided you have a well thought-out reason for doing so!

In detail: What Writing SoP for Ph.D. and What Should It Include

A statement of purpose for a PhD defines an applicant's scholarly and research aspirations within a particular academic discipline or field. It provides insights into their specific research interests, methodology, and academic objectives.

Individuals seeking admission to doctoral programs at universities and research institutions are required to submit an SoP as part of their application. Admissions committees use the SoP to assess an applicant's fit for the program, their potential contributions to the research community, and their alignment with the program's academic goals. It emphasizes relevant academic achievements, research experiences, and scholarly accomplishments that make the applicant a strong candidate for the program.

In general, this is an academic assignment focused on a brief but exhaustive research of a candidate’s benefits, achievements, and intentions according to the selected educational program. Talking about a statement of purpose for a doctor of philosophy in a university it’s vitally important to focus on the following professional features in the content:

  • analytical and research skills;
  • problem-solving abilities;
  • an opportunity to research;
  • time-management skills;
  • knowledge of different research methods, etc.

These skills are a must because a doctor of philosophy should be keen on making research, analyzing thoughts, sharing conclusions, and implementing results in the scientific field. So this paper will clarify the admission committee’s 2 main ideas. On the one hand, a candidate must be capable of being a scholar and making a valuable contribution to the university’s reputation. That’s your key obligation and responsibility of yours as a student of a PhD program.

On the other hand, your academic interests, achievements, and goals must match the occupation of the university or its exact department. Depending on these two factors, a student needs to share relevant thoughts in PhD statement of purpose. Here is a classic structure of the document:

  • your past. You need to explain your experience and achievements you have already collected in the previous stages of education;
  • your curse of study. That’s a place for analyzing how the future course and new degree will prepare you for the next stage of your life;
  • your professional career. It’s important to explain that your education will positively impact your future career and further scientific research.

Anyway, a successful essay for application must match many requirements. Depending on how you will handle this challenge, you can be accepted or rejected to the educational establishment of your dreams.

How to Write a Statement of Purpose for PhD

Overall, making a statement of purpose for a PhD takes time and requires skills. No matter the particularities and principles of your university, you need to keep a list of standard recommendations in your research. Here are the main requirements to follow.

Make yourself the main character of your story

Take a look at a sample of statement of purpose for PhD and you’ll see that it is focused on one person. This assignment aims to describe you, your personal features, professional skills, and other essential facts. Such an approach makes your paper original and truly “personal”.

Answer key questions

There is a list of questions you need to focus on and share your answers in your statement of purpose for PhD. For instance, why you want to apply for the doctor of philosophy degree, why you are interested in the exact academic research, why you are attracted by the exact school, etc. Your honest and unique answers will help you to build impressive and original content.

Demonstrate that you match all requirements

During your life, you will hear this question very often, and not only in statement of purpose samples for PhD. You will be asked to explain why (in your opinion) you consider your candidacy a perfect match for the degree. For this reason, you need to explore the website of the exact university first and demonstrate that you match these points.

Highlight your skills and experience

Being in the following stage, you have already collected many skills and knowledge. This is your background that will play into your hands during writing SOP for PhD. That’s why demonstrate your experience and achievements that will be a basis for you as a doctor of philosophy.

Explain your negative experience

If you have any issues during your past education and dark spots in your life story you need to reserve a place for your explanations in your file. Don’t ignore and don’t try to hide your experience even if it was negative. Vice versa, you aim to respond to negative stories and make conclusions about how those situations helped you to become a better person.

Useful Tips to Wrote a Fantastic Statement of Purpose for your PhD

As you can see, statement of purpose writing for PhD isn’t an easy job. It requires professional skills, enough time, and strong personal features. Also, you can improve your writing results by using professional tips.

Let’s share several efficient recommendations:

SOP Samples for PhD in Physics

Don’t know what to write in the statement of purpose? Here is a short version of one of the free SoP samples for PhD in physics:

Since early childhood, I’ve been fascinated by the fact that physics explains phenomena we experience in everyday life, as well as phenomena that are beyond our usual perception. This childhood fascination in the field of physics determined my college choice and, I might say, my path in life. During the period of studying, my interest in complex phenomena increased.

I wanted to know how they affect the world we live in, the society in general, and each one of us. I’ve chosen an interdisciplinary degree – Physics and Environmental Science. My dream is to become a researcher and explore ways of storage and disposal for radioactive waste that comes from hospitals. My aim is to find effective methods of reducing their effect on the environment.

Upon completing the college degree, I’ve gained valuable work experience.

I worked in an Environmental Protection Agency for almost two years. My responsibilities included examining the sites of radioactive leakage and measuring the damage. This experience motivated me to pursue PhD in Physics so I could find ways to control such situations. I want to be equipped with the necessary knowledge that will allow me to conduct important experiences and find effective ways of managing radioactive waste.

I’ve chosen the University of Chicago because of its brilliant reputation, the opportunities and mentorship it can provide. On my part, I believe that I am capable of making a meaningful contribution to the community. I’m sure that my practical experience, strong motivation, and readiness to face challenges will help me along the way.

SOP Samples for PhD in Physics Chemistry

This is the introducing part of one of the SoP samples for PhD in chemistry:

Chemistry has interested me since I was a kid. I attended high school in Ukraine and wasn’t satisfied with the standard program, especially when it came to Chemistry. That is why I decided to study in Chemical High School in Kyiv, which had a strong program. In this school, I was able to obtain valuable knowledge and win two Chemistry Olympiads.

Upon high school graduation, I got accepted into the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. By April 2021, my undergraduate studies will be completed. In the Chemistry Department, students take undergraduate courses and conduct researches at the Academy.

My intention is to continue chemistry researches. I aim for PhD because I believe it will provide the necessary experience and valuable knowledge in the field of chemistry. I have chosen Carnegie Mellon University because it has a brilliant reputation and provides many opportunities for aspiring students who pursue chemistry research work.

SOP Samples for PhD in Computer Science

Looking for free SoP samples for PhD in this field? Consider this piece:

To me, computer science is so much more than programming or data structures. All technological machinery is based on computer science, be it hardware or software. My genuine interest in this field first showed when my uncle took apart his old computer and explained how everything worked. That day I knew I was going to be involved in computers.

I started learning more about computers – everything I could, really. Soon I realized that software development became more popular than research and discovery. I believe that pursuing PhD in Computer Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology will enable me to conduct meaningful researches in the field of Computer Science.

When I was a college student, I focused more on software development. Upon graduation, I have gained some experience working as a programmer at a local computing company. I designed software solutions for corporate usage.

SOP Samples for PhD in Biology

Consider this statement of purpose, if you need free SoP samples for PhD in Biology:

Since I was a little girl, becoming a scientist has been my cherished dream. I have been brought up in a secure family, where education has always been prioritized. I am very thankful to my parents, who instilled me with principles and values that help me through life.

Major concepts of biology fascinated and intrigued me in school. I tried to learn everything I could about cells, tissues, genes, microbes, etc. I love to obtain knowledge from different areas, without restricting myself to one particular field. I was always careful when selecting various subjects in the process of studying. Being aware of numerous challenges, for my bachelor’s degree, I’ve chosen a double main course with Microbiology and Chemistry at the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology.

I got vast practical knowledge in the field of biology while working in the laboratory during classroom seminars. I learned a lot about cell biology, food, and dairy microbiology, etc. Taking an active role in giving a seminar was a usual thing for me. I organized many inter-departmental events and developed strong leadership skills. Now I have the necessary knowledge that will help me succeed in my studies and future research work.
