The Ultimate Study Music Playlist

This is a playlist of my favorite study music. It’s great for homework, studying for exams, reading, and generally getting crap crossed off my many checklists.

I’ve been working on this playlist for several years, and it contains music (all non-lyrical) from a wide variety of genres and sources, including video game/anime/movie soundtracks. At the moment, it’s got about 240 songs for you to choose from.

Listening on another app? I’ve worked to mirror this study playlist to other services. Check them out below:

  • Spotify Study Music Playlist
  • Apple Music Study Playlist

If you’d like, you can study with me in another tab while this plays. You can also listen to the playlist on YouTube instead of on this page.

By the way – I create my own study music as well! If you’d like to give it a listen, here’s a playlist:

You can also follow me on Spotify or on YouTube if you want to be notified when new tracks are released.

Need even more study music?

Here are a few options.

Brain.fm – Music designed specifically to help you focus more effectively. It works really well for me, and I use it for around 50% of my research, writing, and reading sessions – the other half are mostly done with the playlist above.

Piano Study Playlist – If you’re in the mood for a more consistent playlist, check out this one full of solo piano tracks.

Coffitivity – Sometimes I’m in the mood for ambient noise instead of music, and the sounds of a bustling coffee shop are my personal favorite type.

Noisli – An ambient noise generator that lets you create your own mix using sounds like rain, thunder, fan, and white/brown/pink noise.

More Playlists

Work Vibes – My personal playlist of “getting-stuff-done” music. Most of the tracks here have vocals, so I wouldn’t read or study intently with them. But they’re great for crushing emails, working on design projects, or doing other work where I simply need to execute quickly.

Tom’s Workout Playlist – A collection of the tracks that usually accompany me to the gym.

(2023) Best Homework Songs to Listen While Study

homework songs

Doing homework is a very boring thing.

It is tough to make your mind ready for homework, but staying focused on your homework is the more challenging.

Do you also feel bored while doing your homework?

I do not know about you, but when I was a student, I always started feeling bored and uninterested just by hearing the name of homework.

But then I started using a magical thing that changed my boring homework session to a fun session.

That magical thing is homework songs.

If you do not know about homework songs, then these are the songs that you can hear while doing your homework.

There is no particular category of these types of songs; these are entirely based on your taste in music.

But some music makers create such songs that fulfil the requirements of being a homework song.

In today’s blog, I will suggest many homework songs that you can use as your homework song.

There will be some songs that were produced as homework songs.

And others will be the songs that are regular songs, but you still can use them as homework songs.

This will be a detailed blog about homework songs, so read it till the end.

Table of Contents

How to Choose a Homework Song?

Before going to the suggestions, let me tell you how to choose a homework song.

In my suggestion list, you will get all types of homework songs.

Some songs will follow the steps that I will tell you in this topic.

And some will not.

I will do this to increase the number of options for you.

But I designed a checklist that you should check before choosing a homework song.

The first thing you should check is that there should not be lyrics in your homework songs.

Lyrics can distract you from your homework, so always choose the song with no vocals.

If you have a favourite song that has lyrics, you can find its music on the internet.

You can do this, but I will not suggest this even.

Because if you have a favourite song, then there is very much possibility that you will already know the lyrics.

And when you play the music of that song, then there is a very high possibility that music will change your homework session in a music party.

Because if you know the lyrics and your favourite song music plays, then no one can stop you from singing it.

Relaxing Music

You can select any music genre as your homework song.

But most people suggest that the song you are going to select for homework should be relaxing.

So, your first priority should be a relaxing song.

A relaxing song will help you relax your mind while doing your homework.

Not just with homework, if you want to do any other work as well and feel stressed; you can use these songs there also.

Below, I shared a complete list of relaxing songs that you can use as homework songs.

It would be best to try to use long mixes of songs for your homework.

There are a lot of 1 to 2 hours (Even longer than this) long mixes that are present on YouTube.

You can choose them according to yourself.

Sometimes, your homework session can be very long, like 3 to 4 hours.

In those times, these long mixes will help you a lot.

If you are using these extended mixes, then you do not have to replay or change your song.

By this, you can focus on your homework more appropriately.

You also can use the loop feature, but these mixes are very well edited, so you get a lot better experience in these mixes.

So, This was a small checklist of 3 points about choosing homework songs.

You should consider these points while choosing a song for your homework.

But, it is not mandatory that you have to follow all these points and only then you can choose a good song.

If you have another song that you think will help you focus on your homework, you can choose that.

I also shared those types of songs in this blog that do not follow these three rules.

Below, you will find a list of songs that follow these rules and the songs that are entirely opposite.

Best Homework Songs For Your Boring Sessions

I hope you understand the above rules that I have shared; I should start my suggestion list now.

These are some of the best songs for homework that everyone suggests; this list is not based on a single category.

You will find different kinds of songs on this list.

If you want songs category-wise, then you can scroll a little in this blog.

For now, here are some best homework songs.

Most of the songs that I have shared are the instrumental version of the original songs, so all the credits goes to the respected owners of the songs.

Homework Songs With My Checklist

Relaxing songs are the best when you have to do study or homework.

These songs help you relax your mind and increase your concentration and focus.

Moreover, it also helps you to avoid distractions around you.

That’s why I thought to make a different list of just relaxing songs, try to choose a song from this list.

It will help you a lot with your homework.

If you consider relaxing music boring, then you don’t have to worry.

After this list, you will find some fun and sad homework songs as well.

But for now, here is the list of some best relaxing songs that you can use for homework songs.

Best Relaxing Songs For Homework

Relaxing songs are the best, when you have to do study or homework.

These songs help you to relax your mind and to increase your concentration and focus.

Best Fun Songs For Homework

This was one of the most challenging lists to select.

Fun songs that are also for homework; It was a pretty challenging task.

But after some research, I have selected some songs that are fun and you can use them for homework.

Some of these songs have Lyrics.

That’s why before choosing a song from this list, think for some time.

I will suggest you test every song from this list and then decide which song works better for you.

1. Life ain’t fair music

There are two versions of this song, one with lyrics and one without lyrics.

Its version without lyrics is just on another level; it gives me chills every time I hear it.

Its beats drops are just crazy and fire.

If you watch TikTok or Instagram reels, then I am sure you have heard it.

You can use this song as your homework song. It is a good song, no matter how much time you listen to it, you never get bored.

One problem about this song is that its without lyrics version is not available on Spotify.

But you can hear it from YouTube, just type “life ain’t fair,” and this song will be in front of you.

You can put this song on loop and can do your homework.

2. Fairytale (Alexander Rybak)

If you like the violin, then this song is for you, and if you do not like it, then this song will make you love the violin.

This song has lyrics, but its music is so great that you will find thousands of without lyrics versions of this song.

The music of this song will give you another level of excitement.

You can use this song while doing your homework, but keep one thing in mind, don’t start vibing with this song.

Because it will make you vibe, and then you will get distracted.

3. NF – The Search (Bass Boosted)

“The beat drop of this song slaps harder than my dad’s belt” I had read this line from this song comment section.

And it is entirely correct; this song just fills another level of energy.

I first heard that song on social media, and I liked it so much that I searched for it on YouTube.

It took some time to find this song as I did not know the song’s name, but then I finally found it.

The name of the official song is NF – The Search, and it is available on the NFrealmusic YouTube channel.

It is a good song, but its bass boosted version makes it much better.

You can choose this song for your homework, but one problem with this song is that it has Lyrics.

fun songs to listen to while doing homework

“Top Songs I Listen to When Doing Homework” by Rachel Gray

I don’t know about you, but I end up being the type to need some type of background noise when I work, whether it is my Spotify playing in the background, an old episode of The Office on Netflix (R.I.P. The Office 2021), or some random “MrBeast” video I click on while scrolling through YouTube. Unless I was writing an essay, I’d hate it when teachers would tell the class that we couldn’t listen to music or watch videos while working. One time, in my AP World History class, I attempted to watch Step Brothers while going through the packet, but the teacher was like, “Yeah, no.” I’m still petty to this day. So, I thought I’d take the time and go through the top songs I listen to while studying for my Honors classes, both popular and not so popular.

First up: “Control” by Zoe Wees. This is a really good song that 1) kind of puts you in your feels but 2) has a really good beat. If I’m going through a Math WebAssign, I can sing my heart out and just pour my emotion into the lyrics. But if I’m reading something for Spanish, I can vibe with the beat of the music without worrying too much about what the lyrics are. I think this song overall is definitely a good one to put on your playlist. I give it an 8/10.

Next: “Stop” by Anthony Ramos. Almost everyone has seen Hamilton at this point, or you’ve probably heard enough of the hype that you’ve looked up a couple of songs. Anthony Ramos played John Laurens in the Broadway musical. This song, recently released, is high on my list for a couple of reasons. 1) It reminds me to “stop” and take life in. It isn’t all about school or work. I’ve got to step back and appreciate everything else surrounding me. 2) His voice is amazing. I loved his voice in Hamilton , and once I discovered he had music of his own, it was game over. After all considerations, I think this song is a nice touch when you’re in a good mood, about to finish your work for the day, and it’s time to relax. A solid 9/10.

Honorable mentions: “The Black and White” by The Band Camino, “Stupid Mistakes” by lovelytheband, “Kids” by Ben Rector, and “You Love Me” by flora cash. All of these songs, by genre and artist, really take up 80% of my playlist. Outside of doing homework, I like to just listen to these songs on road trips or during everyday chores. This is definitely my everyday music, and it works great as background noise when you’re trying to focus on your work more than the music. All together, these average a solid 7/10.

Lastly: “Wildfire” by Nate Smith. Yes, I do listen to country music. I, personally, enjoy it a lot. Today’s country, less so than what played a decade ago, but I think every generation thinks that. I grew up on country music, every Sunday listening to Lon Helton on Country Countdown USA. This song is really catchy to me, and I enjoy listening to it when I’m working on my Honors Computer Science course. I can sing the lyrics and listen along without giving the music too much of my attention as I’m working. It’s like an unconscious thing. Between the catchiness and letting it roll in the background, this too gets a 7/10.

I would bring in a few more, but I don’t think there’s enough time. There’s just so many to choose from. I’m sure you have your favorite songs to listen to when you’re studying. Share them with me on Instagram: @raethefangirl. Also, here’s my Spotify Playlist if you’re interested.

What song should have I listen to not being on this list? What is a good song while doing homework

No_one • Apr 6, 2022 at 1:59 pm

one good song i like to listen to when being productive is Ginger And Lime by spice rack.

A great song to listen to when just sitting at home or in your room doing homework! it has no lyrics but it is a good song to go with anything you are doing. it is also a little short (about two min)

no_onw • Apr 6, 2022 at 1:26 pm

A good go to homework song for me would have to be ginger and lime by spice rack, it has no lyrics but its a good tune to get you in the mood!

I recommend Talking to the Moon by Bruno Mars. There’s also this really cool playlist on Spotify called “Weeknd Homwrk.” I listen to it all the time and I follow it. Its really good for doing schoolwork with.

I would also second blinding lights. I would also recommend Marmar oso. His songs hit deep they also have a nice flow to it. Post Malone as well, and some rnb would be really good for studying. I don’t know what you would listen to but I listen to these when studying or doing homework and *cough cough* I have A’s and B’s…. Might help you or it might not… And if it doesn’t then hope you find something that does 😉 *peace sign*

Trish Hunt • Jun 7, 2020 at 7:19 am

I second Blinding Lights. There is a 10 hour loop version out there.

Used to listen to Around the World by Daft Punk. It also has a 10 hour loop version.

I’ll have to check out the other recommendations.

WWE KID • Mar 25, 2020 at 6:37 pm

I think a Great Song that should go onto that list is “Blinding Lights” by the weeknd

Acacia • Oct 8, 2010 at 12:22 pm

I would have thought that too, but now Hendrix is pretty much all I listen to while studying. Something about that guitar really helps me focus. Give it a try before you write it off.

Joe S • Oct 7, 2010 at 2:39 pm

jimi hendrix would be the last thing I would listen to when studying.

The Music to Listen To While You're Working from Home

If the noise of your full house or the silence of your apartment is driving you insane, tune in to our playlist.

Photography, Room, Collage, Technology, Art, Furniture, Stock photography, Sitting, Photomontage, Graphic design,

During long periods of working remotely, sometimes all it takes is the right song or album to get into the zone. Perhaps it’s an ethereal Tame Impala track to boost your mood or a shiny Tinashe hit to lend you a dose of afternoon energy.

Victoria Sines, Content Strategy Manager

Miguel is my go-to forever and always, but I can’t stop listening to Tame Impala’s new album, The Slow Rush . Their music always puts me in a good mood, and the song “Breathe Deeper” (pun intended) has really been getting me going in the morning or when that midafternoon slump hits.

Barry Samaha, Freelance Market Editor

For the past three years, Spotify’s year-end review has decreed that Aretha Live at Fillmore West is the album I listen to most. Apple Music also backs this data. Still, I’ve never really analyzed why it is in constant rotation on all my audible devices. Perhaps it’s the verve in Franklin’s voice, the musical arrangement of each song, her chats with the crowd in between sets, or a combination of everything. But what I do know for certain is that it makes me happy and keeps me focused. And when I am at home by my lonesome, and not panicking from headlines on CNN (I know! I know!) or stuffing my face with brownies, singing along to this gem keeps me sane.

Kerry Pieri, Fashion & Features Director

I find that any Motown Spotify list that has anything to do with Marvin Gaye keeps me in a good mood, motivated, and gives my two-and-a-half-year-old daughter something to jam to.

Bianca Betancourt, Assistant Digital News Editor

As of late while working from home, I’ve been listening to Kaytranada’s latest album, Bubba . The album’s tracks are upbeat enough to wake me up but still simultaneously chill enough to be a proper soundtrack to the start of the morning. My favorite track is the sassy “10%,” a funky collab with burgeoning Colombian pop star Kali Uchis. Around lunchtime, I usually begin to blast Bad Bunny—“Si Veo a Tu Mamá” is my favorite track off his flawless sophomore effort YHLQMDLG, which stands for “Yo Hago Lo Que Me Da La Gana” and translates to “I Do What I Want.” Then as the day winds down, I’ll put on Tinashe’s Songs for You —a very underrated and well-produced curation of cool girl, modern-pop bops that usually results in me shimmying at my desk, naturally.

Chelsey Sanchez, Editorial Fellow

I feel something akin to religious fervor each time Mitski graces my speakers. Her eclectic discography matches me at every stage of my work-from-home process: cathartic, grating vocals for initial rage; decadent and romantic pop songs for when I hit my groove; and skeletal instrumental arrangements for my inevitable surrender to Slack notifications and email pings. It’s always easier to bow down to the workload when Mitski is prodding me along.

Anna Aiello, Motion Designer

A few songs I’ve been listening to that I’d recommend: “Lost in Yesterday” by Tame Impala. Being locked in my childhood home might actually be the ideal place to listen to Tame Impala’s latest album, The Slow Rush . I’ve been particularly enjoying the song “Lost in Yesterday,” which has a fantastic chorus that may warrant a dance break for me and my dog.

“In My Room” by Frank Ocean. The name of this track has a whole new meaning in these times. Frank Ocean is famous for being a homebody, and I’ve been listening to this single on repeat to bask in the glory of staying home.

“Home” by CARIBOU. The perfect song to make pancakes to. Quiet but upbeat.

Roberto Dume, Director of Photography

I go for tone and mood to sort of map out the day. Think of your eight-hour workday as an album, and your music lineup as your track listing. Some of the records can weave in and out of each other and work just fine on shuffle, but usually I take albums and connect them to create a mood for an extended period, so nothing gets stuck.

If I’m working, I like music that’s not overly distracting, but I can still feel underfoot. It’s always about mood and shifting so that the day is both energized for work without taking you away from the focus.

Some records that have been circulating in rotation while working from home: Frank Ocean’s Blonde , Sade’s Diamond Life , Mac Miller’s Swimming , Khruangbin & Leon Bridges’s Texas Sun EP, Harry Styles’s Fine Line , Japanese Breakfast’s Soft Sounds from Another Planet , Blood Orange’s Negro Swan , Jeff Buckley’s Grace , Radiohead’s In Rainbows , Mac Demarco’s Salad Days , The Velvet Underground’s self-titled album, Erykah Badu’s Baduizm , Little Dragon’s Ritual Union , Washed Out’s Life of Leisure EP, Childish Gambino’s Kauai EP, Billie Eilish’s When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? and Rosalía’s El Mal Querer .

Lee Manansala, Senior Video Editor

WFH for me means waking up at 9:45 to be at my computer at 10, so I’m not fully awake. I put on something light, not too challenging. This morning, I put on “Rip It Up” by Orange Juice—if you like Vampire Weekend’s first album, you’ll like Orange Juice.

Once I find my stride, I need something that I can put on and forget, something that can reasonably take the place of the office din, which, if I’m being honest, I miss. Today, I put on Selected Ambient Works 85-9 2 by Aphex Twin. I know it by heart, so it’s not distracting, but I would miss it if it wasn’t on.

I ended today with The Wild Hunt by The Tallest Man on Earth, because when you’re trying to stave off atrophy and cabin fever, what you need is the perfect road trip album.

Erica Gonzales, Culture & Content Strategy Editor

My work soundtrack depends entirely on my mood (I have gone from Ariana Grande to Creedence Clearwater Revival in a day—I don’t understand myself), but lately, I’ve been finding comfort in mellow soul classics. I love “Superwoman (Where You Were You When I Needed You)” by Stevie Wonder; he’s one of my all-time favorites, and this deep cut is a perfect mix of calming and melancholy. I’ve also been constantly listening to “I Can’t Stand the Rain” by Ann Peebles; I can’t get that tingly timbales intro out of my head, and the song is such a cool gem apropos of New York’s recent dreary weather.

Other more modern artists and tunes on rotation: Dijon, Soccer Mommy, Clairo, the new Moses Sumney album grae , Niia, Snoh Aalegra, Outkast, Tom Misch, Boygenius, Rex Orange County, and Solange’s A Seat at the Table and When I Get Home.

The Best Study Music: What to Listen to While Doing Homework

September 29, 2021 by admin 0 Comments

Students and music cannot be separated because they all love music and some can keep their players on an entire day. Music can help lift mood even when the student is alone in their rooms, relaxing outdoors, or walking. In the study room, not all music will be good when you are doing your homework.

You need to concentrate on getting the answers right because some types of music will just keep distracting you and you might lose an important point. The following music is good to listen to during homework time.

fun songs to listen to while doing homework

Hip hop is generally called hip hop culture because its lovers believe it promotes a music culture globally. Being one of the oldest music genres, Hip hop blends several tunes and vocals into one piece of a song that is vibrant, confronting, and celebrating life.

This is one of the styles of music a student can listen to while doing homework because it mostly speaks about real-life experiences and encourages a listener when they realize they are not the only ones experiencing a challenging moment. It can help encourage a student do homework even when they feel like the task is too difficult for them.

Other type of Homework help

If you want to do well in college, always make an effort to do all the homework your teacher assigns you. It helps improve learning and you will reap the good fruits of education. Despite your efforts to do your best and complete all academic work, sometimes you feel you need help. You don’t have to worry because Edubirdie can do your homework while you concentrate on your study. You can get help from their professional writers any time because they help every student according to their needs.

Country music

Country hits are mostly associated with things that touch on independence and freedom. The artists sing about situations they went through yet overcame. Some sing about terrible adversities like alcoholism, fighting, rejections, and such incidences and how they eventually overcame. Doing a ton of homework is not always easy because some assignments can be tough and complex. The student might feel it was not meant for them but if they can tune and listen to several country hits, they can start feeling encouraged and go on with their assignments.

Jamaican reggae is characterized by features such as amplified guitars, offbeat quavers, electric guitars, and a large number of drums. It is a genre that is more masculine than feminine and male students love this genre. Although it doesn’t have a unique rhythm, reggae reflects culture, values, and spirituality. Some researchers say listening to reggae can help students do better in math because the spirituality in reggae can help condition the mind to learn. Classical music forms a combination of sophisticated tunes and vocals and this is what makes this genre popular. Researchers believe classical music nurtures the soul and helps grow the mind. Other studies say when a student creates a habit of listening to classical music, their language skills develop fast. They also benefit from improved spatial skills, reasoning skills, and better intelligence. These are benefits that can help a student do their homework better.

Nature sounds

According to recent data, listening to recorded sounds of nature has many benefits to the mind. It helps reduce stress, pain and increase mood. The study further says listening to natural sounds helps an individual create a sense of safety and they can stop worrying about what is happening outside and concentrate on what is before them. A student can do their homework better when listening to recorded natural sounds.

Music has immeasurable benefits to students while at school, commuting, or relaxing. A student can listen to music to improve cognitive skills and enhance their memory. Students who create a habit of listening to music when doing their homework may enjoy doing their assignments without feeling stressed. Currently, there are over 1,000 music genres in the market and this gives a student freedom to choose which genre is best for them .

Productivity Playlist

21 Best Songs While Working from Home (Productivity Playlist)

Listening to music while working is somewhat of a divisive topic for those who take pride in their productivity. Should you shut yourself into a realm of silence while working, or is it ok to crank up the radio and sing along to your favorite jams?

The answer is not as simple as you may think, though it is perfectly logical: some people prefer to listen to music while they work, while others need silence to concentrate.

The good news is that for those who prefer to listen (or sing along) to their favorite beats to stay focused is that there are a lot of great options for fresh playlists every day of the workweek. Check out the songs below to identify ways to update your working from home playlist.

Classical Music

You’ve likely heard that listening to classical music while you study helps you focus and can even increase students’ retention of their material. Will the same scenario at work cause you to be more productive while working in your home office? It’s possible! Instrumental classical music is extremely versatile and varied: it can be used for relaxation, sleep, energy, and focus. Below are three tracks that may help you wake up in the morning.

1. Mozart’s “Piano Sonata in A”

Have you ever sat down at your desk and felt as though you were about to fall asleep despite your two cups of coffee and a full night’s rest? Use this energizing, happy sonata to turn on those creaky gears in your brain on those slow mornings. A fair warning to those with small children, however: This bouncy tune may bring to mind all those baby learning videos that you thought you’d erased from your memory!

2. Erik Satie’s “Gymnopedie No. 1”

If you’re the type of person who prefers sipping hot coffee while watching the leaves fall in the middle of the countryside, you will likely love this slow, inspiring song while you work. Though it sounds sleepy in the beginning, the tentative notes soon transition into an inspiring and emotional melody.

3. Pachelbel’s “Canon in D”

You don’t have to love a good wedding march to enjoy this classic canon. The cello intro and warm orchestrations will help you feel calm and relaxed as you get down to business.

Acoustic Vibes

So you’ve exhausted your classical playlist and you want to move on to more wordless — but not tuneless — melodies. If you and your spouse or roommate share a work-from-home space and you clash on musical tastes (as well as whether the music should feature a singer or not), you may be able to compromise by playing the following instrumental covers of these popular songs.

4. Sia’s “Chandelier”

As an early 2010s favorite, this haunting song was what catapulted Sia to international fame. You’ll likely recognize the melody even if you’ve never followed the artist. An instrumental rearrangement of the original will get you pumped up and ready to work on whatever project you’ve allotted for the day.

5. Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect”

This relaxing, beautiful melody will bring to mind one of your favorite songs, but if you are distracted by Ed (and possible Beyoncé, depending on the version) singing at you while you are trying to concentrate, you may enjoy an acoustic cover of one of the popular singer’s most famous songs more than you would the original while you focus.

6. Maroon 5’s “Memories”

This sentimental tune is just the right balance of melody and wordless guitar sequences to provide the ideal background listening for your home office. Be warned, though: you might find yourself singing along to this easy-listening favorite.

Electronic Anthems

If you’re a fan of electronica, techno, or house mixes, you’re likely a fan of listening to this genre — preferably through noise-canceling headphones to really feel the dance beats — while you work. For those who prefer to listen to faster, bass-backed rhythms, dance music may be the playlist unicorn you’ve been looking for.

7. Erik Pryde’s “Pjanoo”

The up-tempo Pjanoo is just the right mix of electronica and yes, you guessed it: piano instrumentals. This is a perfect song for individuals who would like to add faster songs to their playlist that reflect the energy of their day while not distracting themselves with vocals.

8. Maison & Dragen’s “Rio de Janeiro”

This energizing electronic song will be like caffeine to your brain if you’ve just switched from listening to slow meditative tunes or calming acoustic playlists. If you need a musical pick-me-up without vocals, this song can be combined with Pjanoo to give you a few minutes of recharging while switching projects or completing a section of work.

9. Deadmau5 feat. Chris James’ “The Veldt”

This song features smooth vocals from Chris James that blend into Deadmau5’s signature heavy beats. Though the melody contains words, the song is mellow enough to blend into the background of your workday while keeping you energized and focused.

10. Duke Ellington’s “Take the A Train”

Even if you aren’t familiar with many jazz classics, you’ll certainly recognize this one from Duke Ellington. It’s old-timey melody and horn arrangements will have you dancing at your desk as you complete your work.

11. Charlie Parker’s “The Yardbird Suite”

Charlie Parker is an iconic name in jazz, and this song captures everything he’s famous for: The improvised riffs, the bright melodies, and the energy of the era. Make sure to find a high-quality, remastered recording for the best listen.

12. The Talented Mr. Ripley Soundtrack

This award-winning soundtrack from the movie set in the 1950s jazz-era Italy features songs from jazz greats like the above two artists as well as a few original compositions. Even if you have never seen the movie (or you never plan to), its soundtrack is well worth the listen.

Sometimes we all could use a little break from work. If you’re not one who likes vocals during your actual work time, use the below songs to recharge, get you in the mood to finish work, or give your brain a three-minute rest from its workflow.

13. Sheena Easton’s “Morning Train”

Ok, so this 80’s throwback is a little cheesy, but what’s better for getting you in the mood to work than a song about going to work? This is a great starter song for your playlist as it will begin your day on a high note and give you a smile before you sit down to productivity.

14. BTS’s “Dynamite”

For those who need a K-pop-infused brain break, check out this popular Korean boyband. Their colorful melodies (and clothes) will have you singing along and replaying this song for the next hour!

15. One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful”

If you have a love of boybands, this feel-good pop song will provide you with a much-needed recharge after a long day. Check out the rest of their first album if you need a throwback on your lunch break.

Meditative Music

16. Cora Zea’s “Afternoon Spirits”

This soothing melody features wind chimes and piano. It’s perfect for concentrating on a quiet morning or wrapping up your work at the end of the day without breaking your focus streak.

17. Enno Aare’s “Ella’s Lullaby”

Discover great artists where you’d least expect them. This Spotify artist has been somewhat reclusive in past years, but this hasn’t stopped him from producing great calming music that can be used for meditation, studying, or productivity.

18. Alexis French’s “Dreamland”

This classically-trained pianist composes haunting melodies that both relax and inspire. Check out his new album which features the above song as well as classics like “Bluebird” and “Last Song” to be transported to a calming fantasy world while you focus.

Binaural Beats

These special frequencies, when played under music, are supposed to improve your sleep, your concentration, and your mood. Try them for yourself and see: They’re best listened to with a pair of high-quality headphones that block out extraneous background noise.

19. Syncrophonic’s “Creature”

If you’ve got some mental heavy lifting to do, get inspired with this purposeful, slightly ominous song in the background. If the beats work, you will likely feel both productive and focused throughout its duration.

20. The Monotone Dancer’s “Limbo”

This song features a low tone to start and transitions into including a higher, flutelike melody. It includes the binaural beats underneath, but you may not even notice them as they disappear into the song.

21. Shaman’s “Energizer”

It may be strange to think of a slow song as energizing, but try this song with hidden binaural beats and see what you think about whether it improves your alertness at work. It’s reminiscent of an ocean crashing onto shore again and again while lifting you up with a calming melody.

Overall, the type of playlist you choose to curate will be based on your individual musical tastes, the type of work you’re accomplishing, and your current mood.

The best music to listen to while working or studying

Martin Buzacott

A lady in glasses bites on a pencil while staring at a computer screen

  • X (formerly Twitter)

Over recent months, working and studying from home has become the new normal for many of us. It can be quite an adjustment, so in the physical absence of your boss or teacher, what classical music can help you focus, and to knuckle down to the task?

We've put together a playlist to help keep you focused.

Listen to the playlist on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube.

We also put it to ABC Classic listeners, who came up with these suggestions:

 1. Johann Sebastian Bach

A runaway winner for so many listeners, Bach’s music achieves the perfect balance between complex thought processes and sheer listening pleasure. His music gets the brain going while still creating a comforting aural environment when you’re chained to your desk. In particular, those lively and repeating Baroque rhythms are the soundtrack to the determined work-ethic that we’re all seeking when trying to do our best at work or study.

  • I wrote my best University essays to Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos. Yvonne Ritson, Bardon
  • Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto no 3 is the perfect accompaniment to study. It got me through many a late night when studying for the HSC! Nicole Davis Fields
  • I drove my other half crazy with J.S. Bach, especially his solo keyboard works, while I was doing a 3-year post-graduate degree. He now loves the great J.S. Bach almost as much as I do! Justyn
  • It's the Bach cello suites for me, but I have to have the volume really low. Catharine Maggie
  • Any Bach. He makes me focus. Jodes McGoo
  • Bach, Bach, and just for a change, a little more Bach. Tante Dondon

2. The Minimalists

They might still be divisive figures in the concert hall, but in the home office, Philip Glass, Max Richter, Arvo Pärt and Ludovico Einaudi are often the go-to composers of choice. Sure, their music can sound repetitive on a superficial level, but that’s kind of the point. Whether you’re doing the hard slog on that next report or assignment, or memorising the periodic table, you want an ambient sound that’s interesting enough both as foreground at the start of your project and background as you get more into your day’s work.

  • I tend not to listen to anything because it can distract me. But if I do, I lean towards minimalist music - Philip Glass is a favourite. Ben Clapton
  • I find I always tend to start listening to the music rather than working. I can't ignore good classical music, but sometimes Philip Glass works. Mostly I use repetitive binaural beats. Helen South
  • When I need a boost of mental strength, it’s Scarlatti’s piano works, but otherwise I do Arvo Pärt or Einaudi. Simonn Stratton
  • I'll never say no to some Max Richter! Robert McKinnon

3. Hildegard von Bingen

You shouldn’t just listen to Hildegard’s music while working from home. You should also use her as an example of sheer productivity. Yes, her music is simply sublime, but it was only part of her achievements during her working life as nun, visionary theologist, natural medicine expert, and even the inventor of a new language. If music like Hildegard’s going through your head worked that well for her, then it will surely work for you too.

  • I do everything listening to Hildegard von Bingen. Sublime doesn't begin to describe it. Malcolm McDonald

4. Medieval chant and Renaissance polyphony

Once you’ve worked your way through Hildegard’s entire oeuvre, it could be time to move onto Gregorian chant and Renaissance polyphony. This was originally music for contemplation and acts of devotion – exactly what you’re after in your work and study, right? Right? Well, even if you’re not after that, these two very different types of music, one simple in its melodic line, the other complex and interweaving, are both gorgeous to listen to, while demonstrating in music the necessity of sticking to the task at hand.

  • I use Renaissance polyphony to work by when writing reports. It helps enormously, I think because it silences my internal chatter. I become much more focussed. If the music is too structured It's a distraction. Peter - Adelaide.
  • Spem et alium by Thomas Tallis... or just Gregorian chants are good. Alicia Thompson

 5. The Classical Guitar

It doesn’t matter what classical guitar music you hear, there’s just something about it that soothes the soul and calms the mind. Maybe it’s the difficulty of the instrument that demands outstanding concentration from the performer, which then transfers to the listener. And with all ten fingers engaged at once, there’s no room for extraneous detail or distraction. Whether it’s the rapturous sound of the Rodrigo Concierto di Aranjuez or that compelling tremolo in Asturias by Albeniz, listen to guitar music and your attention span will increase while your senses are enchanted.

  • There’s nothing as beautiful as a guitar – except perhaps two. Frederic Chopin

Well he does fix everything doesn’t he? (Maybe not your dicky knee – best to see an osteopath about that one.) There’s just something about Mozart’s music that reminds us that sheer genius can sometimes come easily, and you can actually sound like you’re having fun doing it. If Mozart could write masterpieces while playing billiards or skittles, surely you can get that report or assignment out of the way easily, brilliantly, and with sheer style, all while listening to beautiful music!

  • Generally it’s Mozart for me. His music is beautiful and makes me feel inspired. Mal Salmon
  • For me it’s Mozart or silence. Wendy from Moorngag
  • Mozart can fix it! Narelle Milligan

Grateful beyond words: a letter to my inspiration, i have never been so thankful to know you..

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

You have taught me that you don't always have to strong. You are allowed to break down as long as you pick yourself back up and keep moving forward. When life had you at your worst moments, you allowed your friends to be there for you and to help you. You let them in and they helped pick you up. Even in your darkest hour you showed so much strength. I know that you don't believe in yourself as much as you should but you are unbelievably strong and capable of anything you set your mind to.

Your passion to make a difference in the world is unbelievable. You put your heart and soul into your endeavors and surpass any personal goal you could have set. Watching you do what you love and watching you make a difference in the lives of others is an incredible experience. The way your face lights up when you finally realize what you have accomplished is breathtaking and I hope that one day I can have just as much passion you have.

SEE MORE: A Letter To My Best Friend On Her Birthday

The love you have for your family is outstanding. Watching you interact with loved ones just makes me smile . You are so comfortable and you are yourself. I see the way you smile when you are around family and I wish I could see you smile like this everyday. You love with all your heart and this quality is something I wished I possessed.

You inspire me to be the best version of myself. I look up to you. I feel that more people should strive to have the strength and passion that you exemplify in everyday life. You may be stubborn at points but when you really need help you let others in, which shows strength in itself. I have never been more proud to know someone and to call someone my role model. You have taught me so many things and I want to thank you. Thank you for inspiring me in life. Thank you for making me want to be a better person.

Waitlisted for a College Class? Here's What to Do!

Dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Don't freak out

This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.

Email the professor

Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.

Attend the first class

Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.

Keep attending class

Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).

Have a backup plan

For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.

Remember that everything works out at the end

Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.

Navigating the Talking Stage: 21 Essential Questions to Ask for Connection

It's mandatory to have these conversations..

Whether you met your new love interest online , through mutual friends, or another way entirely, you'll definitely want to know what you're getting into. I mean, really, what's the point in entering a relationship with someone if you don't know whether or not you're compatible on a very basic level?

Consider these 21 questions to ask in the talking stage when getting to know that new guy or girl you just started talking to:

1. What do you do for a living?

What someone does for a living can tell a lot about who they are and what they're interested in! Their career reveals a lot more about them than just where they spend their time to make some money.

2. What's your favorite color?

OK, I get it, this seems like something you would ask a Kindergarten class, but I feel like it's always good to know someone's favorite color . You could always send them that Snapchat featuring you in that cute shirt you have that just so happens to be in their favorite color!

3. Do you have any siblings?

This one is actually super important because it's totally true that people grow up with different roles and responsibilities based on where they fall in the order. You can tell a lot about someone just based on this seemingly simple question.

4. What's your favorite television show?

OK, maybe this isn't a super important question, but you have to know ASAP if you can quote Michael Scott or not. If not, he probably isn't the one. Sorry, girl.

5. When is your birthday?

You can then proceed to do the thing that every girl does without admitting it and see how compatible your zodiacs are.

6. What's your biggest goal in life?

If you're like me, you have big goals that you want to reach someday, and you want a man behind you who also has big goals and understands what it's like to chase after a dream. If his biggest goal is to see how quickly he can binge-watch " Grey's Anatomy " on Netflix , you may want to move on.

7. If you had three wishes granted to you by a genie, what would they be?

This is a go-to for an insight into their personality. Based on how they answer, you can tell if they're goofy, serious, or somewhere in between.

8. What's your favorite childhood memory?

For some, this may be a hard question if it involves a family member or friend who has since passed away . For others, it may revolve around a tradition that no longer happens. The answers to this question are almost endless!

9. If you could change one thing about your life, what would it be?

We all have parts of our lives and stories that we wish we could change. It's human nature to make mistakes. This question is a little bit more personal but can really build up the trust level.

10. Are you a cat or a dog person?

I mean, duh! If you're a dog person, and he is a cat person, it's not going to work out.

11. Do you believe in a religion or any sort of spiritual power?

Personally, I am a Christian, and as a result, I want to be with someone who shares those same values. I know some people will argue that this question is too much in the talking stage , but why go beyond the talking stage if your personal values will never line up?

12. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Even homebodies have a must visit place on their bucket list !

13. What is your ideal date night?

Hey, if you're going to go for it... go for it!

14. Who was/is your celebrity crush?

For me, it was hands-down Nick Jonas . This is always a fun question to ask!

15. What's a good way to cheer you up if you're having a bad day?

Let's be real, if you put a label on it, you're not going to see your significant other at their best 24/7.

16. Do you have any tattoos?

This can lead to some really good conversations, especially if they have a tattoo that has a lot of meaning to them!

17. Can you describe yourself in three words?

It's always interesting to see if how the person you're talking to views their personal traits lines ups with the vibes you're getting.

18. What makes you the most nervous in life?

This question can go multiple different directions, and it could also be a launching pad for other conversations.

19. What's the best gift you have ever received?

Admittedly, I have asked this question to friends as well, but it's neat to see what people value.

20. What do you do to relax/have fun?

Work hard, play hard, right?

21. What are your priorities at this phase of your life?

This is always interesting because no matter how compatible your personalities may be, if one of you wants to be serious and the other is looking for something casual, it's just not going to work.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in challah bread or easter bread.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

A few weeks ago, I was given a loaf of bread called Challah (pronounced like holla), and upon my first bite, I realized it tasted just like Easter Bread. It was so delicious that I just had to make some of my own, which I did.

The recipe is as follows:

Ingredients

2 tsp active dry or instant yeast 1 cup lukewarm water 4 to 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup white granulated sugar 2 tsp salt 2 large eggs 1 large egg yolk (reserve the white for the egg wash) 1/4 cup neutral-flavored vegetable oil

Instructions

  • Combine yeast and a pinch of sugar in small bowl with the water and stir until you see a frothy layer across the top.
  • Whisk together 4 cups of the flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl.
  • Make a well in the center of the flour and add in eggs, egg yolk, and oil. Whisk these together to form a slurry, pulling in a little flour from the sides of the bowl.
  • Pour the yeast mixture over the egg slurry and mix until difficult to move.
  • Turn out the dough onto a floured work surface and knead by hand for about 10 minutes. If the dough seems very sticky, add flour a teaspoon at a time until it feels tacky, but no longer like bubblegum. The dough has finished kneading when it is soft, smooth, and holds a ball-shape.
  • Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and place somewhere warm. Let the dough rise 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
  • Separate the dough into four pieces. Roll each piece of dough into a long rope roughly 1-inch thick and 16 inches long.
  • Gather the ropes and squeeze them together at the very top. Braid the pieces in the pattern of over, under, and over again. Pinch the pieces together again at the bottom.
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment and lift the loaf on top. Sprinkle the loaf with a little flour and drape it with a clean dishcloth. Place the pan somewhere warm and away from drafts and let it rise until puffed and pillowy, about an hour.
  • Heat the oven to 350°F. Whisk the reserved egg white with a tablespoon of water and brush it all over the challah. Be sure to get in the cracks and down the sides of the loaf.
  • Slide the challah on its baking sheet into the oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through cooking. The challah is done when it is deeply browned.

I kept wondering how these two breads could be so similar in taste. So I decided to look up a recipe for Easter Bread to make a comparison. The two are almost exactly the same! These recipes are similar because they come from religious backgrounds. The Jewish Challah bread is based on kosher dietary laws. The Christian Easter Bread comes from the Jewish tradition but was modified over time because they did not follow kosher dietary laws.

A recipe for Easter bread is as follows:

2 tsp active dry or instant yeast 2/3 cup milk 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 cup white granulated sugar 2 tbs butter 2 large eggs 2 tbs melted butter 1 tsp salt

  • In a large bowl, combine 1 cup flour, sugar, salt, and yeast; stir well. Combine milk and butter in a small saucepan; heat until milk is warm and butter is softened but not melted.
  • Gradually add the milk and butter to the flour mixture; stirring constantly. Add two eggs and 1/2 cup flour; beat well. Add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, stirring well after each addition. When the dough has pulled together, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 8 minutes.
  • Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough in the bowl and turn to coat with oil. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 1 hour.
  • Deflate the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into two equal size rounds; cover and let rest for 10 minutes. Roll each round into a long roll about 36 inches long and 1 1/2 inches thick. Using the two long pieces of dough, form a loosely braided ring, leaving spaces for the five colored eggs. Seal the ends of the ring together and use your fingers to slide the eggs between the braids of dough.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place loaf on a buttered baking sheet and cover loosely with a damp towel. Place loaf in a warm place and let rise until doubled in bulk, about 45 minutes. Brush risen loaf with melted butter.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 30 minutes.

Both of these recipes are really easy to make. While you might need to have a day set aside for this activity, you can do things while the dough is rising or in the oven. After only a few hours, you have a delicious loaf of bread that you made from scratch, so the time and effort is really worth it!

Unlocking Lake People's Secrets: 15 Must-Knows!

There's no other place you'd rather be in the summer..

The people that spend their summers at the lake are a unique group of people.

Whether you grew up going to the lake , have only recently started going, or have only been once or twice, you know it takes a certain kind of person to be a lake person. To the long-time lake people, the lake holds a special place in your heart , no matter how dirty the water may look.

Every year when summer rolls back around, you can't wait to fire up the boat and get back out there. Here is a list of things you can probably identify with as a fellow lake-goer.

A bad day at the lake is still better than a good day not at the lake.

It's your place of escape, where you can leave everything else behind and just enjoy the beautiful summer day. No matter what kind of week you had, being able to come and relax without having to worry about anything else is the best therapy there is. After all, there's nothing better than a day of hanging out in the hot sun, telling old funny stories and listening to your favorite music.

You know the best beaches and coves to go to.

Whether you want to just hang out and float or go walk around on a beach, you know the best spots. These often have to be based on the people you're with, given that some "party coves" can get a little too crazy for little kids on board. I still have vivid memories from when I was six that scared me when I saw the things drunk girls would do for beads.

You have no patience for the guy who can't back his trailer into the water right.

When there's a long line of trucks waiting to dump their boats in the water, there's always that one clueless guy who can't get it right, and takes 5 attempts and holds up the line. No one likes that guy. One time my dad got so fed up with a guy who was taking too long that he actually got out of the car and asked this guy if he could just do it for him. So he got into the guy's car, threw it in reverse, and got it backed in on the first try. True story.

Doing the friendly wave to every boat you pass.

Similar to the "jeep wave," almost everyone waves to other boats passing by. It's just what you do, and is seen as a normal thing by everyone.

The cooler is always packed, mostly with beer.

Alcohol seems to be a big part of the lake experience, but other drinks are squeezed into the room remaining in the cooler for the kids, not to mention the wide assortment of chips and other foods in the snack bag.

Giving the idiot who goes 30 in a "No Wake Zone" a piece of your mind.

There's nothing worse than floating in the water, all settled in and minding your business, when some idiot barrels through. Now your anchor is loose, and you're left jostled by the waves when it was nice and perfectly still before. This annoyance is typically answered by someone yelling some choice words to them that are probably accompanied by a middle finger in the air.

You have no problem with peeing in the water.

It's the lake, and some social expectations are a little different here, if not lowered quite a bit. When you have to go, you just go, and it's no big deal to anyone because they do it too.

You know the frustration of getting your anchor stuck.

The number of anchors you go through as a boat owner is likely a number that can be counted on two hands. Every once in a while, it gets stuck on something on the bottom of the lake, and the only way to fix the problem is to cut the rope, and you have to replace it.

Watching in awe at the bigger, better boats that pass by.

If you're the typical lake-goer, you likely might have an average-sized boat that you're perfectly happy with. However, that doesn't mean you don't stop and stare at the fast boats that loudly speed by, or at the obnoxiously huge yachts that pass.

Knowing any swimsuit that you own with white in it is best left for the pool or the ocean.

You've learned this the hard way, coming back from a day in the water and seeing the flowers on your bathing suit that were once white, are now a nice brownish hue.

The momentary fear for your life as you get launched from the tube.

If the driver knows how to give you a good ride, or just wants to specifically throw you off, you know you're done when you're speeding up and heading straight for a big wave. Suddenly you're airborne, knowing you're about to completely wipe out, and you eat pure wake. Then you get back on and do it all again.

You're able to go to the restaurants by the water wearing minimal clothing.

One of the many nice things about the life at the lake is that everybody cares about everything a little less. Rolling up to the place wearing only your swimsuit, a cover-up, and flip flops, you fit right in. After a long day when you're sunburned, a little buzzed, and hungry, you're served without any hesitation.

Having unexpected problems with your boat.

Every once in a while you're hit with technical difficulties, no matter what type of watercraft you have. This is one of the most annoying setbacks when you're looking forward to just having a carefree day on the water, but it's bound to happen. This is just one of the joys that come along with being a boat owner.

Having a name for your boat unique to you and your life.

One of the many interesting things that make up the lake culture is the fact that many people name their boats. They can range from basic to funny, but they are unique to each and every owner, and often have interesting and clever meanings behind them.

There's no better place you'd rather be in the summer.

Summer is your all-time favorite season, mostly because it's spent at the lake. Whether you're floating in the cool water under the sun, or taking a boat ride as the sun sets, you don't have a care in the world at that moment . The people that don't understand have probably never experienced it, but it's what keeps you coming back every year.
