College Essays

If you grow up to be a professional writer, everything you write will first go through an editor before being published. This is because the process of writing is really a process of re-writing —of rethinking and reexamining your work, usually with the help of someone else. So what does this mean for your student writing? And in particular, what does it mean for very important, but nonprofessional writing like your college essay? Should you ask your parents to look at your essay? Pay for an essay service?

If you are wondering what kind of help you can, and should, get with your personal statement, you've come to the right place! In this article, I'll talk about what kind of writing help is useful, ethical, and even expected for your college admission essay . I'll also point out who would make a good editor, what the differences between editing and proofreading are, what to expect from a good editor, and how to spot and stay away from a bad one.

Should You Pay Money For Essay Editing?

The Bottom Line

What's next, what kind of help with your essay can you get.

Rather than talking in general terms about "help," let's first clarify the two different ways that someone else can improve your writing . There is editing, which is the more intensive kind of assistance that you can use throughout the whole process. And then there's proofreading, which is the last step of really polishing your final product.

Let me go into some more detail about editing and proofreading, and then explain how good editors and proofreaders can help you."

Editing is helping the author (in this case, you) go from a rough draft to a finished work . Editing is the process of asking questions about what you're saying, how you're saying it, and how you're organizing your ideas. But not all editing is good editing . In fact, it's very easy for an editor to cross the line from supportive to overbearing and over-involved.

Ability to clarify assignments. A good editor is usually a good writer, and certainly has to be a good reader. For example, in this case, a good editor should make sure you understand the actual essay prompt you're supposed to be answering.

Open-endedness. Good editing is all about asking questions about your ideas and work, but without providing answers. It's about letting you stick to your story and message, and doesn't alter your point of view.

body_landscape.jpg

Think of an editor as a great travel guide. It can show you the many different places your trip could take you. It should explain any parts of the trip that could derail your trip or confuse the traveler. But it never dictates your path, never forces you to go somewhere you don't want to go, and never ignores your interests so that the trip no longer seems like it's your own. So what should good editors do?

Help Brainstorm Topics

Sometimes it's easier to bounce thoughts off of someone else. This doesn't mean that your editor gets to come up with ideas, but they can certainly respond to the various topic options you've come up with. This way, you're less likely to write about the most boring of your ideas, or to write about something that isn't actually important to you.

If you're wondering how to come up with options for your editor to consider, check out our guide to brainstorming topics for your college essay .

Help Revise Your Drafts

Here, your editor can't upset the delicate balance of not intervening too much or too little. It's tricky, but a great way to think about it is to remember: editing is about asking questions, not giving answers .

Revision questions should point out:

  • Places where more detail or more description would help the reader connect with your essay
  • Places where structure and logic don't flow, losing the reader's attention
  • Places where there aren't transitions between paragraphs, confusing the reader
  • Moments where your narrative or the arguments you're making are unclear

But pointing to potential problems is not the same as actually rewriting—editors let authors fix the problems themselves.

Bad editing is usually very heavy-handed editing. Instead of helping you find your best voice and ideas, a bad editor changes your writing into their own vision.

You may be dealing with a bad editor if they:

  • Add material (examples, descriptions) that doesn't come from you
  • Use a thesaurus to make your college essay sound "more mature"
  • Add meaning or insight to the essay that doesn't come from you
  • Tell you what to say and how to say it
  • Write sentences, phrases, and paragraphs for you
  • Change your voice in the essay so it no longer sounds like it was written by a teenager

Colleges can tell the difference between a 17-year-old's writing and a 50-year-old's writing. Not only that, they have access to your SAT or ACT Writing section, so they can compare your essay to something else you wrote. Writing that's a little more polished is great and expected. But a totally different voice and style will raise questions.

Where's the Line Between Helpful Editing and Unethical Over-Editing?

Sometimes it's hard to tell whether your college essay editor is doing the right thing. Here are some guidelines for staying on the ethical side of the line.

  • An editor should say that the opening paragraph is kind of boring, and explain what exactly is making it drag. But it's overstepping for an editor to tell you exactly how to change it.
  • An editor should point out where your prose is unclear or vague. But it's completely inappropriate for the editor to rewrite that section of your essay.
  • An editor should let you know that a section is light on detail or description. But giving you similes and metaphors to beef up that description is a no-go.

body_ideas.jpg

Proofreading (also called copy-editing) is checking for errors in the last draft of a written work. It happens at the end of the process and is meant as the final polishing touch. Proofreading is meticulous and detail-oriented, focusing on small corrections. It sands off all the surface rough spots that could alienate the reader.

Because proofreading is usually concerned with making fixes on the word or sentence level, this is the only process where someone else can actually add to or take away things from your essay . This is because what they are adding or taking away tends to be one or two misplaced letters.

Laser focus. Proofreading is all about the tiny details, so the ability to really concentrate on finding small slip-ups is a must.

Excellent grammar and spelling skills. Proofreaders need to dot every "i" and cross every "t." Good proofreaders should correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. They should put foreign words in italics and surround quotations with quotation marks. They should check that you used the correct college's name, and that you adhered to any formatting requirements (name and date at the top of the page, uniform font and size, uniform spacing).

Limited interference. A proofreader needs to make sure that you followed any word limits. But if cuts need to be made to shorten the essay, that's your job and not the proofreader's.

body_detective-2.jpg

A bad proofreader either tries to turn into an editor, or just lacks the skills and knowledge necessary to do the job.

Some signs that you're working with a bad proofreader are:

  • If they suggest making major changes to the final draft of your essay. Proofreading happens when editing is already finished.
  • If they aren't particularly good at spelling, or don't know grammar, or aren't detail-oriented enough to find someone else's small mistakes.
  • If they start swapping out your words for fancier-sounding synonyms, or changing the voice and sound of your essay in other ways. A proofreader is there to check for errors, not to take the 17-year-old out of your writing.

What Do Colleges Think of Your Getting Help With Your Essay?

Admissions officers agree: light editing and proofreading are good—even required ! But they also want to make sure you're the one doing the work on your essay. They want essays with stories, voice, and themes that come from you. They want to see work that reflects your actual writing ability, and that focuses on what you find important.

On the Importance of Editing

Get feedback. Have a fresh pair of eyes give you some feedback. Don't allow someone else to rewrite your essay, but do take advantage of others' edits and opinions when they seem helpful. ( Bates College )

Read your essay aloud to someone. Reading the essay out loud offers a chance to hear how your essay sounds outside your head. This exercise reveals flaws in the essay's flow, highlights grammatical errors and helps you ensure that you are communicating the exact message you intended. ( Dickinson College )

On the Value of Proofreading

Share your essays with at least one or two people who know you well—such as a parent, teacher, counselor, or friend—and ask for feedback. Remember that you ultimately have control over your essays, and your essays should retain your own voice, but others may be able to catch mistakes that you missed and help suggest areas to cut if you are over the word limit. ( Yale University )

Proofread and then ask someone else to proofread for you. Although we want substance, we also want to be able to see that you can write a paper for our professors and avoid careless mistakes that would drive them crazy. ( Oberlin College )

On Watching Out for Too Much Outside Influence

Limit the number of people who review your essay. Too much input usually means your voice is lost in the writing style. ( Carleton College )

Ask for input (but not too much). Your parents, friends, guidance counselors, coaches, and teachers are great people to bounce ideas off of for your essay. They know how unique and spectacular you are, and they can help you decide how to articulate it. Keep in mind, however, that a 45-year-old lawyer writes quite differently from an 18-year-old student, so if your dad ends up writing the bulk of your essay, we're probably going to notice. ( Vanderbilt University )

body_thumbsup-3.jpg

Now let's talk about some potential people to approach for your college essay editing and proofreading needs. It's best to start close to home and slowly expand outward. Not only are your family and friends more invested in your success than strangers, but they also have a better handle on your interests and personality. This knowledge is key for judging whether your essay is expressing your true self.

Parents or Close Relatives

Your family may be full of potentially excellent editors! Parents are deeply committed to your well-being, and family members know you and your life well enough to offer details or incidents that can be included in your essay. On the other hand, the rewriting process necessarily involves criticism, which is sometimes hard to hear from someone very close to you.

A parent or close family member is a great choice for an editor if you can answer "yes" to the following questions. Is your parent or close relative a good writer or reader? Do you have a relationship where editing your essay won't create conflict? Are you able to constructively listen to criticism and suggestion from the parent?

One suggestion for defusing face-to-face discussions is to try working on the essay over email. Send your parent a draft, have them write you back some comments, and then you can pick which of their suggestions you want to use and which to discard.

Teachers or Tutors

A humanities teacher that you have a good relationship with is a great choice. I am purposefully saying humanities, and not just English, because teachers of Philosophy, History, Anthropology, and any other classes where you do a lot of writing, are all used to reviewing student work.

Moreover, any teacher or tutor that has been working with you for some time, knows you very well and can vet the essay to make sure it "sounds like you."

If your teacher or tutor has some experience with what college essays are supposed to be like, ask them to be your editor. If not, then ask whether they have time to proofread your final draft.

Guidance or College Counselor at Your School

The best thing about asking your counselor to edit your work is that this is their job. This means that they have a very good sense of what colleges are looking for in an application essay.

At the same time, school counselors tend to have relationships with admissions officers in many colleges, which again gives them insight into what works and which college is focused on what aspect of the application.

Unfortunately, in many schools the guidance counselor tends to be way overextended. If your ratio is 300 students to 1 college counselor, you're unlikely to get that person's undivided attention and focus. It is still useful to ask them for general advice about your potential topics, but don't expect them to be able to stay with your essay from first draft to final version.

Friends, Siblings, or Classmates

Although they most likely don't have much experience with what colleges are hoping to see, your peers are excellent sources for checking that your essay is you .

Friends and siblings are perfect for the read-aloud edit. Read your essay to them so they can listen for words and phrases that are stilted, pompous, or phrases that just don't sound like you.

You can even trade essays and give helpful advice on each other's work.

body_goats.jpg

If your editor hasn't worked with college admissions essays very much, no worries! Any astute and attentive reader can still greatly help with your process. But, as in all things, beginners do better with some preparation.

First, your editor should read our advice about how to write a college essay introduction , how to spot and fix a bad college essay , and get a sense of what other students have written by going through some admissions essays that worked .

Then, as they read your essay, they can work through the following series of questions that will help them to guide you.

Introduction Questions

  • Is the first sentence a killer opening line? Why or why not?
  • Does the introduction hook the reader? Does it have a colorful, detailed, and interesting narrative? Or does it propose a compelling or surprising idea?
  • Can you feel the author's voice in the introduction, or is the tone dry, dull, or overly formal? Show the places where the voice comes through.

Essay Body Questions

  • Does the essay have a through-line? Is it built around a central argument, thought, idea, or focus? Can you put this idea into your own words?
  • How is the essay organized? By logical progression? Chronologically? Do you feel order when you read it, or are there moments where you are confused or lose the thread of the essay?
  • Does the essay have both narratives about the author's life and explanations and insight into what these stories reveal about the author's character, personality, goals, or dreams? If not, which is missing?
  • Does the essay flow? Are there smooth transitions/clever links between paragraphs? Between the narrative and moments of insight?

Reader Response Questions

  • Does the writer's personality come through? Do we know what the speaker cares about? Do we get a sense of "who he or she is"?
  • Where did you feel most connected to the essay? Which parts of the essay gave you a "you are there" sensation by invoking your senses? What moments could you picture in your head well?
  • Where are the details and examples vague and not specific enough?
  • Did you get an "a-ha!" feeling anywhere in the essay? Is there a moment of insight that connected all the dots for you? Is there a good reveal or "twist" anywhere in the essay?
  • What are the strengths of this essay? What needs the most improvement?

Should You Pay Money for Essay Editing?

One alternative to asking someone you know to help you with your college essay is the paid editor route. There are two different ways to pay for essay help: a private essay coach or a less personal editing service , like the many proliferating on the internet.

My advice is to think of these options as a last resort rather than your go-to first choice. I'll first go through the reasons why. Then, if you do decide to go with a paid editor, I'll help you decide between a coach and a service.

When to Consider a Paid Editor

In general, I think hiring someone to work on your essay makes a lot of sense if none of the people I discussed above are a possibility for you.

If you can't ask your parents. For example, if your parents aren't good writers, or if English isn't their first language. Or if you think getting your parents to help is going create unnecessary extra conflict in your relationship with them (applying to college is stressful as it is!)

If you can't ask your teacher or tutor. Maybe you don't have a trusted teacher or tutor that has time to look over your essay with focus. Or, for instance, your favorite humanities teacher has very limited experience with college essays and so won't know what admissions officers want to see.

If you can't ask your guidance counselor. This could be because your guidance counselor is way overwhelmed with other students.

If you can't share your essay with those who know you. It might be that your essay is on a very personal topic that you're unwilling to share with parents, teachers, or peers. Just make sure it doesn't fall into one of the bad-idea topics in our article on bad college essays .

If the cost isn't a consideration. Many of these services are quite expensive, and private coaches even more so. If you have finite resources, I'd say that hiring an SAT or ACT tutor (whether it's PrepScholar or someone else) is better way to spend your money . This is because there's no guarantee that a slightly better essay will sufficiently elevate the rest of your application, but a significantly higher SAT score will definitely raise your applicant profile much more.

Should You Hire an Essay Coach?

On the plus side, essay coaches have read dozens or even hundreds of college essays, so they have experience with the format. Also, because you'll be working closely with a specific person, it's more personal than sending your essay to a service, which will know even less about you.

But, on the minus side, you'll still be bouncing ideas off of someone who doesn't know that much about you . In general, if you can adequately get the help from someone you know, there is no advantage to paying someone to help you.

If you do decide to hire a coach, ask your school counselor, or older students that have used the service for recommendations. If you can't afford the coach's fees, ask whether they can work on a sliding scale —many do. And finally, beware those who guarantee admission to your school of choice—essay coaches don't have any special magic that can back up those promises.

Should You Send Your Essay to a Service?

On the plus side, essay editing services provide a similar product to essay coaches, and they cost significantly less . If you have some assurance that you'll be working with a good editor, the lack of face-to-face interaction won't prevent great results.

On the minus side, however, it can be difficult to gauge the quality of the service before working with them . If they are churning through many application essays without getting to know the students they are helping, you could end up with an over-edited essay that sounds just like everyone else's. In the worst case scenario, an unscrupulous service could send you back a plagiarized essay.

Getting recommendations from friends or a school counselor for reputable services is key to avoiding heavy-handed editing that writes essays for you or does too much to change your essay. Including a badly-edited essay like this in your application could cause problems if there are inconsistencies. For example, in interviews it might be clear you didn't write the essay, or the skill of the essay might not be reflected in your schoolwork and test scores.

Should You Buy an Essay Written by Someone Else?

Let me elaborate. There are super sketchy places on the internet where you can simply buy a pre-written essay. Don't do this!

For one thing, you'll be lying on an official, signed document. All college applications make you sign a statement saying something like this:

I certify that all information submitted in the admission process—including the application, the personal essay, any supplements, and any other supporting materials—is my own work, factually true, and honestly presented... I understand that I may be subject to a range of possible disciplinary actions, including admission revocation, expulsion, or revocation of course credit, grades, and degree, should the information I have certified be false. (From the Common Application )

For another thing, if your academic record doesn't match the essay's quality, the admissions officer will start thinking your whole application is riddled with lies.

Admission officers have full access to your writing portion of the SAT or ACT so that they can compare work that was done in proctored conditions with that done at home. They can tell if these were written by different people. Not only that, but there are now a number of search engines that faculty and admission officers can use to see if an essay contains strings of words that have appeared in other essays—you have no guarantee that the essay you bought wasn't also bought by 50 other students.

body_monalisa.jpg

  • You should get college essay help with both editing and proofreading
  • A good editor will ask questions about your idea, logic, and structure, and will point out places where clarity is needed
  • A good editor will absolutely not answer these questions, give you their own ideas, or write the essay or parts of the essay for you
  • A good proofreader will find typos and check your formatting
  • All of them agree that getting light editing and proofreading is necessary
  • Parents, teachers, guidance or college counselor, and peers or siblings
  • If you can't ask any of those, you can pay for college essay help, but watch out for services or coaches who over-edit you work
  • Don't buy a pre-written essay! Colleges can tell, and it'll make your whole application sound false.

Frequently asked questions

Is it legal to use academic writing services, do your academic writers provide original work, what exactly can you help me with, is there a way to talk to my writer, why is academic writing so hard.

Academic writing is the main way of assessing students’ comprehension, critical thinking and analysis skills. This is why it is not supposed to be easy. However, in the current landscape, it is arguably a lot harder than it used to be just ten years ago. Students truly have a lot on their plates, and getting a trusted service for academic writing help is a necessity rather than a luxury. But still, finding a reputable academic writing company that would not scam you out of your money and private data can be a struggle. We recommend always reading through the terms and conditions before giving an online service your money. Sure, reading through dozens of pages of legalese is not fun, but it’s a sure way to safeguard your funds and, most importantly, your privacy. An easier way to determine the trustworthiness of a company is by looking at the payment methods they offer. Always look for a padlock character at the beginning of the address bar in your browser, as this tells you the website is safe. The payment methods also have to be recognizable and trustworthy. If all those conditions are met, you know that the research papers writing help service is safe and can be trusted. But if it raises any suspicions, run away immediately!

Reasons to choose us for your writing needs

There are plenty of academic writing services to choose from these days, and feeling confused when you have to settle for one is natural. The reality is you don't have to settle for one! Every publication is going to have slightly different guidelines for writing personal essays.

For magazines , a nalyze your favorite pub, and you’ll likely find a personal essay among the pages. Study those. Then check Writers Market for submission guidelines (which usually requires submitting a completed essay instead of a pitch).

For blogs and other outlets , study examples of past essays, and read the guidelines, which you can usually find online. While most editors want a complete draft of a personal essay, instead of a pitch, that’s not the case for every publication.

Obviously personal essays are going to focus on something from your own life experience. But you need to find a way to bring it back to the reader, make it relevant to their own life, and give them some kind of take-away message.

Keep that in mind, and you’ll be able to land gigs and get paid to write personal essays.

Freelance writing can be a great way to make money from home. But with any business, there’s a steep learning curve. You have to know what editors want, where to find jobs that are legitimate, and what to charge as you progress.

A Look at the Best Freelance Writing Websites

When you’re building your writing portfolio, there are some freelance writing sites that stand out for offering legitimate jobs and paying writers a living wage. They’re the best freelance writing websites for beginners.

The downside is that Upwork charges a 20% fee on your first $500 earned with each client, 10% up to $10,000, and 5% beyond that. It’s a good place to get started, but you won’t want to use it for long.

Known for offering services starting at $5, Fiverr is a marketplace for freelancers to showcase their services to prospective clients. You create a profile, list a “gig,” and then it becomes available to a global audience.

All communication and payments are processed through Fiverr, but it also charges a steep 20% fee on all earnings. If you’re nervous about reaching out to clients yourself, Fiverr can be a good platform where they come to you.

Apply for Assignments on the Best Freelance Writing Job Boards

Job boards are easy places for companies to post their jobs. The job board doesn’t vet freelancers, handle payments, or make promises on behalf of clients.

There are some things to be aware of when applying and taking a job from a job board. Because the service is free for writers, you’re competing against thousands of other bloggers for a limited number of jobs.

Job boards are also notorious for phishing scams. “Clients” may ask you to download a zip file of their payment terms or writing guidelines and ask you to invoice them via PayPal. The zip file is actually a keystroke logger allowing them to steal your PayPal credentials. Be careful when applying to jobs on these boards.

11. ProBlogger

The ProBlogger job board is updated daily with blogging and article writing jobs across all subjects.

Businesses have to pay ProBlogger to post their job ad, meaning the writer isn’t paid through ProBlogger. They don’t charge the writer any fees for joining or getting paid.

Another job board filled with many freelance writing opportunities is Indeed . You can find full-time, part-time, and freelance remote writing jobs across all subjects, and because of the vastness of the board, competition isn’t as high compared to others.

You can sign up for job alerts based on your searches. Simply enter your email address and activate emails to see them as soon as they hit the website.

13. MediaBistro

Journalists and anyone else in media will find MediaBistro helpful for finding jobs in the industry. If you’re looking for paid writing jobs in marketing, advertising, television, or news, you can find hundreds of jobs from recognizable names on MediaBistro’s job board.

There are entry-level positions listed, but your best move is to get enough writing experience to make a professional-looking resume before you start applying for jobs on this site.

How to Get Paid to Write (Step by Step)

Before you apply to get paid for writing, there are a few things you should do to make yourself stand out to potential clients.

1. Choose What to Write About

When you’re writing for money, you might think that only writing about a couple of topics limits your options, but it actually expands them. Sites and companies that pay well don’t want freelancers who write about anything, they want experts in their field. When you stick to a single niche and become known for it, you’ll become a sought-after writer.

Choosing one topic also allows you to scale your business faster. You learn your subject thoroughly, research less, work faster, and can take on more clients. All this leads to being able to earn a higher hourly rate for your work. The key is to pick a profitable niche.

2. Create a Portfolio

There are several ways to create a portfolio. The first is with a blog. Every new writer should have a blog, especially if you don’t have many clips to show potential clients.

Once you choose your niche, write five to ten blog posts on various topics within it. This shows potential clients your writing style, expertise, and gives them a place to contact you.

You can also make money with a blog . One way is to find products and services related to your niche that you like using and see if they have an affiliate program. Then every time someone makes a purchase through your affiliate link, you’ll earn a small commission.

3. Create Profiles on Multiple Sites

Once you’ve written a few articles for other sites or publications, you can create profiles and portfolios on multiple professional freelance writing sites. Clippings.me is a portfolio site for journalists, Contently is used by many web-based content writers, and LinkedIn is a go-to place for businesses looking for expert writers.

Having a presence on a few different sites makes it easier for clients to find you and your work. They may also learn personal facts about you that give you an edge over other writers so don’t underestimate including things like your alma mater, pets, and hobbies.

4. Post on Social Media

Building a social media presence around your niche can also put you ahead for freelance writing jobs. Twitter is most popular for journalists and print publications while Instagram is becoming a popular place for e-commerce businesses to find writers.

You don’t have to make another social media account just for your writing. Post facts, breaking news, advice, and stories related to your niche and tag them with relevant hashtags. It’ll help brands find you, and it can further reinforce to potential clients that you’re knowledgeable and stay current about the topics you write about.

5. Accept Smaller Jobs While Building Your Reputation

While you’re building your portfolio and expertise in your niche, you’ll have to be willing to accept lower-paid writing jobs. Think of them as practice that you’re getting paid to do. The more organizations, editors, and platforms you work with now, the more you’ll be able to impress high-paying clients in the future.

You can also pitch websites to guest post. You won’t get paid to write guest posts, but you may be able to add links to your blog posts in your article. This will help your posts rank higher in Google, and potential clients may be able to find you through simple Google searches.

 6. Learn to Network

You can start freelance writing on your own, but if you want to build a business and make a living writing, you need a network of other writers. Your network should be filled with writers and editors in your niche who are a little ahead of you and a little behind you in the journey.

Your network can also help you find sources for stories, give you feedback on pitches, advise you on rates to charge, and help you to feel like you’re not alone in this often isolating industry.

Buying College Essays Is Now Easier Than Ever. But Buyer Beware

Concern is growing about a burgeoning online market for essays that students can buy and turn in as their own work. And schools are trying new tools to catch it.

As the recent college admissions scandal is shedding light on how parents are cheating and bribing their children's way into college, schools are also focusing on how some students may be cheating their way through college. Concern is growing about a burgeoning online market that makes it easier than ever for students to buy essays written by others to turn in as their own work. And schools are trying new tools to catch it.

It's not hard to understand the temptation for students. The pressure is enormous, the stakes are high and, for some, writing at a college level is a huge leap.

"We didn't really have a format to follow, so I was kind of lost on what to do," says one college freshman, who struggled recently with an English assignment. One night, when she was feeling particularly overwhelmed, she tweeted her frustration.

"It was like, 'Someone, please help me write my essay!' " she recalls. She ended her tweet with a crying emoji. Within a few minutes, she had a half-dozen offers of help.

"I can write it for you," they tweeted back. "Send us the prompt!"

The student, who asked that her name not be used for fear of repercussions at school, chose one that asked for $10 per page, and she breathed a sigh of relief.

"For me, it was just that the work was piling up," she explains. "As soon as I finish some big assignment, I get assigned more things, more homework for math, more homework for English. Some papers have to be six or 10 pages long. ... And even though I do my best to manage, the deadlines come closer and closer, and it's just ... the pressure."

In the cat-and-mouse game of academic cheating, students these days know that if they plagiarize, they're likely to get caught by computer programs that automatically compare essays against a massive database of other writings. So now, buying an original essay can seem like a good workaround.

"Technically, I don't think it's cheating," the student says. "Because you're paying someone to write an essay, which they don't plagiarize, and they write everything on their own."

Her logic, of course, ignores the question of whether she's plagiarizing. When pressed, she begins to stammer.

"That's just a difficult question to answer," she says. "I don't know how to feel about that. It's kind of like a gray area. It's maybe on the edge, kind of?"

Besides she adds, she probably won't use all of it.

Other students justify essay buying as the only way to keep up. They figure that everyone is doing it one way or another — whether they're purchasing help online or getting it from family or friends.

"Oh yeah, collaboration at its finest," cracks Boston University freshman Grace Saathoff. While she says she would never do it herself, she's not really fazed by others doing it. She agrees with her friends that it has pretty much become socially acceptable.

"I have a friend who writes essays and sells them," says Danielle Delafuente, another Boston University freshman. "And my other friend buys them. He's just like, 'I can't handle it. I have five papers at once. I need her to do two of them, and I'll do the other three.' It's a time management thing."

The war on contract cheating

"It breaks my heart that this is where we're at," sighs Ashley Finley, senior adviser to the president for the Association of American Colleges and Universities. She says campuses are abuzz about how to curb the rise in what they call contract cheating. Obviously, students buying essays is not new, but Finley says that what used to be mostly limited to small-scale side hustles has mushroomed on the internet to become a global industry of so-called essay mills. Hard numbers are difficult to come by, but research suggests that up to 16 percent of students have paid someone to do their work and that the number is rising.

"Definitely, this is really getting more and more serious," Finley says. "It's part of the brave new world for sure."

The essay mills market aggressively online, with slickly produced videos inviting students to "Get instant help with your assignment" and imploring them: "Don't lag behind," "Join the majority" and "Don't worry, be happy."

"They're very crafty," says Tricia Bertram Gallant, director of the Academic Integrity Office at the University of California in San Diego and a board member of the International Center for Academic Integrity.

The companies are equally brazen offline — leafleting on campuses, posting flyers in toilet stalls and flying banners over Florida beaches during spring break. Companies have also been known to bait students with emails that look like they're from official college help centers. And they pay social media influencers to sing the praises of their services, and they post testimonials from people they say are happy customers.

"I hired a service to write my paper and I got a 90 on it!" gloats one. "Save your time, and have extra time to party!" advises another.

"It's very much a seduction," says Bertram Gallant. "So you can maybe see why students could get drawn into the contract cheating world."

YouTube has been cracking down on essay mills; it says it has pulled thousands of videos that violate its policies against promoting dishonest behavior.

But new videos constantly pop up, and their hard sell flies in the face of their small-print warnings that their essays should be used only as a guide, not a final product.

Several essay mills declined or didn't respond to requests to be interviewed by NPR. But one answered questions by email and offered up one of its writers to explain her role in the company, called EduBirdie.

"Yes, just like the little birdie that's there to help you in your education," explains April Short, a former grade school teacher from Australia who's now based in Philadelphia. She has been writing for a year and a half for the company, which bills itself as a "professional essay writing service for students who can't even."

Some students just want some "foundational research" to get started or a little "polish" to finish up, Short says. But the idea that many others may be taking a paper written completely by her and turning it in as their own doesn't keep her up at night.

"These kids are so time poor," she says, and they're "missing out on opportunities of travel and internships because they're studying and writing papers." Relieving students of some of that burden, she figures, allows them to become more "well-rounded."

"I don't necessarily think that being able to create an essay is going to be a defining factor in a very long career, so it's not something that bothers me," says Short. Indeed, she thinks students who hire writers are demonstrating resourcefulness and creativity. "I actually applaud students that look for options to get the job done and get it done well," she says.

"This just shows you the extent of our ability to rationalize all kinds of bad things we do," sighs Dan Ariely, professor of psychology and behavioral economics at Duke University. The rise in contract cheating is especially worrisome, he says, because when it comes to dishonest behavior, more begets more. As he puts it, it's not just about "a few bad apples."

Felicity Huffman And 12 Other Parents To Plead Guilty In College Cheating Scandal

Felicity Huffman And 12 Other Parents To Plead Guilty In College Cheating Scandal

"Instead, what we have is a lot ... of blemished apples, and we take our cues for our behavior from the social world around us," he says. "We know officially what is right and what's wrong. But really what's driving our behavior is what we see others around us doing" or, Ariely adds, what we perceive them to be doing. So even the proliferation of advertising for essays mills can have a pernicious effect, he says, by fueling the perception that "everyone's doing it."

A few nations have recently proposed or passed laws outlawing essay mills, and more than a dozen U.S. states have laws on the books against them. But prosecuting essay mills, which are often based overseas in Pakistan, Kenya and Ukraine, for example, is complicated. And most educators are loath to criminalize students' behavior.

"Yes, they're serious mistakes. They're egregious mistakes," says Cath Ellis, an associate dean and integrity officer at the University of New South Wales, where students were among the hundreds alleged to have bought essays in a massive scandal in Australia in 2014.

"But we're educational institutions," she adds. "We've got to give students the opportunity to learn from these mistakes. That's our responsibility. And that's better in our hands than in the hands of the police and the courts."

Staying one step ahead

In the war on contract cheating, some schools see new technology as their best weapon and their best shot to stay one step ahead of unscrupulous students. The company that makes the Turnitin plagiarism detection software has just upped its game with a new program called Authorship Investigate.

The software first inspects a document's metadata, like when it was created, by whom it was created and how many times it was reopened and re-edited. Turnitin's vice president for product management, Bill Loller, says sometimes it's as simple as looking at the document's name. Essay mills typically name their documents something like "Order Number 123," and students have been known to actually submit it that way. "You would be amazed at how frequently that happens," says Loller.

Using cutting-edge linguistic forensics, the software also evaluates the level of writing and its style.

"Think of it as a writing fingerprint," Loller says. The software looks at hundreds of telltale characteristics of an essay, like whether the author double spaces after a period or writes with Oxford commas or semicolons. It all gets instantly compared against a student's other work, and, Loller says, suspicions can be confirmed — or alleviated — in minutes.

"At the end of the day, you get to a really good determination on whether the student wrote what they submitted or not," he says, "and you get it really quickly."

Coventry University in the U.K. has been testing out a beta version of the software, and Irene Glendinning, the school's academic manager for student experience, agrees that the software has the potential to give schools a leg up on cheating students. After the software is officially adopted, "we'll see a spike in the number of cases we find, and we'll have a very hard few years," she says. "But then the message will get through to students that we've got the tools now to find these things out." Then, Glendinning hopes, students might consider contract cheating to be as risky as plagiarizing.

In the meantime, schools are trying to spread the word that buying essays is risky in other ways as well.

Professor Ariely says that when he posed as a student and ordered papers from several companies, much of it was "gibberish" and about a third of it was actually plagiarized.

Even worse, when he complained to the company and demanded his money back, they resorted to blackmail. Still believing him to be a student, the company threatened to tell his school he was cheating. Others say companies have also attempted to shake down students for more money, threatening to rat them out if they didn't pay up.

The lesson, Ariely says, is "buyer beware."

But ultimately, experts say, many desperate students may not be deterred by the risks — whether from shady businesses or from new technology.

Bertram Gallant, of UC San Diego, says the right way to dissuade students from buying essays is to remind them why it's wrong.

"If we engage in a technological arms race with the students, we won't win," she says. "What are we going to do when Google glasses start to look like regular glasses and a student wears them into an exam? Are we going to tell them they can't wear their glasses because we're afraid they might be sending the exam out to someone else who is sending them back the answers?"

The solution, Bertram Gallant says, has to be about "creating a culture where integrity and ethics matter" and where education is valued more than grades. Only then will students believe that cheating on essays is only cheating themselves.

  • Updated in July, 2023

If you are thinking about working with an academic writing service but aren’t sure how much it costs to write your essay, here you’ll find our pricing guide and what factors influence the cost.

How Much Does it Cost to Write my Essay?

The starting cost of an essay writing service can range between $55 and $60 per page .

The factors that affect the price are:

  • Level of education
  • Number of pages
  • Time until deadline

In this blog post, you’ll find more information on why each of these factor impact the cost of your paper and what else this essay writing service includes.

You can also find this information in our video:

This guide was created to help you clearly understand how the pricing for our essay service works if you are an undergrad or graduate student. Not only will you know exactly what you will pay , but you will also understand all the factors taken into account for a legitimate and honest experience with an essay writing service.

You can also use our pricing calculator to get a faster-estimated price. Just fill out the fields that meet your specific need.

6 Factors That Affect Gradehacker's Pricing

Sometimes cheap essays can cost you a bad grade, which is worse than paying a few extra bucks. College essays can’t be generalized and automated since they are actually custom papers.

Each has its own requirements and instructions depending on:

  • The variety of topics
  • Type of your essay assignment
  • Your academic career

So we believe having an automated standard price is not the best approach for getting a high-quality essay.

That’s why we are going to share with you the process Gradehacker uses to decide the price of essays based on students’ academic writing requests!

  • The Level of Your Class (Undergrad, Graduate or Nursing)
  • Number of Pages
  • Spacing Format (Single vs. Double Spaced)
  • Time Until Deadline

To ensure you can be confident and empowered to decide whether our reliable service with expert writers is a good fit for you, let’s go into more detail about each of these variables.

Is your essay for an undergraduate, graduate or nursing class?

The starting price per page is $55 for an undergrad essay and $60 for a graduate or nursing essay.

This is extremely important as the topics and level of research for an undergraduate level are not as demanding as it is for a graduate level ; that’s the main reason the price is different.

Let’s say you need an essay about the digestive system, an introductory undergraduate biology assignment.

In that case, the topic complexity will be more simple than for a graduate class.

Now, what if you get the same subject for a master’s class? Obviously, the topic complexity and amount of research for sources that your essay will need will be higher.

That’s why the final price of an essay in Gradehacker will differ depending on the degree level you are pursuing.

How many pages does your essay need?

For our essay writing service, we have a starting fair price per page, as mentioned above. This means that the more pages your essay has, the lower the cost per page.

There will be tiered discounts per page after certain milestones, such as needing more than 4, 7, or 10 pages.

Sounds good, right?

With our paper writing services, you can rest assured that your work will be handled by experienced writers who deliver high-quality content on time and within your budget.

Is your essay single or double-spaced?

Now, let’s keep thinking about that digestive system essay topic.

Depending on the spacing formatting, the number of pages will vary even if it has the same amount of words.

Here’s an example:

If your essay needs to be written in a double-spaced format, your document will have 8 pages . But if your college paper is single-spaced, the number of pages would be slightly over 4.

Think about it as some sort of optical illusion experience. You may think there is less content because your document has fewer pages, but it’s about the same if you compare the word count.

Our professional paper writers will help you effectively convey your ideas and meet your word count requirements while maintaining the desired formatting.

What if your essay’s requirements are in terms of word count and not pages.

If your essay has a specific word count and not a number of pages, our Student Success team can still figure out the best reasonable price for you!

For our academic writing services, we have an internal tool that allows us to convert a specific word count to pages. This tool also considers other important aspects to reach an accurate page number.

Here’s the link to the site Wordcounter and we invite you to use it so you can see exactly where we get the page numbers. Just enter the font used, the spacing of the paper, and the font size.

In this sense, let’s suppose you have a 975-word complex assignment due soon. We put this into Wordcounter, which would tell us that those 975 words equal 4 pages of double-spaced content, with Time New Roman font size 12.

As you see, Wordcounter is a helpful internal tool that helps us determine the page count based on word count, font size, and spacing, and it also allows us to assess the cost associated with different kinds of papers accurately.

What happens if your essay’s requirements are given as a range of pages?

If your essay has a range of pages instead of a specific number, we find the average between the minimum and the maximum pages allowed.

We do this to ensure the best results for you so that you don’t receive any work with just the minimum requirements.

In our experience, we have found that going over the minimum is always beneficial for students to get high-quality papers. That’s why we provide the average pricing when you have a wide range of pages.

So, for example, you need an argumentative essay with a minimum of 6 pages and a maximum of 12 pages; we would calculate the average between these two limits.

In this case, it would be 9. Therefore the price of having that essay on time will be offered based on those 9 pages.

With our paper writing services, we don’t want to offer you cheap essays!

We strive for reasonable prices where you can trust you’ll have direct communication with our highly skilled writers and top-notch papers.

Do you need your paper in 72 hrs or less?

Based on our experience as a professional essay writing service, we know there’s always the possibility of needing a last-minute essay.

Maybe you forgot or thought you could squeeze it into your schedule, but life got in the way of the deadline.

You can always submit a request for review in these cases to find out if the short time frame will work.

Our team will review it, and if accepted, which is usually the case , an express service premium of 15% is added to the final price.

This premium is due to having to prioritize these last-minute types of essays that have a limit of 5-6 pages , but you’ll be able to have your flawless papers on time.

For example, let’s say that under normal circumstances, your essay has a price of $150. If you need it in 72 hrs or less, the price will end up being $172.50

Now that you know all this, you can see that this detailed pricing chart makes sense.

We prioritize time delivery and student-friendly prices. We understand the significance of meeting deadlines and offer the assurance that your essay will be delivered within the specified timeframe.

Is my Essay Plagiarism-Free?

The answer to this question will always be YES .

When purchasing an essay service, hundreds of students feel understandable anxiety about the authenticity of the content or sources their essay could have.

Many of them think plagiarism risk is extremely high, and we recognize it’s a problem for many essay writing services platforms .

To address this concern, we have an entire team of essay writers processing and reviewing every written project by our Editor-in-Chief.

Our Editor will check your original paper for formatting, grammar, and spelling, and, most importantly, will have a plagiarism report.

Most professors accept essays with a plagiarism score of 30% or less , but we believe that is entirely too high and thus aim to have less than 10%, with most of our custom papers having less than 5%!

And if issues like this one concern you when you’re considering hiring an essay writing service, we have a guide on how to avoid their most common problems, and that includes how you can ensure to receive plagiarism-free papers!

What is my Guarantee?

Sometimes things don’t go as planned, but this doesn’t mean we will not give you our best effort. To make you feel confident about our work with you, we offer a customer satisfaction guarantee.

Your A or B or free guarantee

We commit to achieving an A or B grade , but in case this is not accomplished (although very rarely), and your essay gets a C or lower grade, our team will take full responsibility and follow our money-back guarantee policy for those situations!

They’ll reach out to you and offer the following options:

  • A full refund to your original payment method
  • A credit in the full amount paid plus an additional 10% for any future request

Are Essay Writing Services an Investment?

Absolutely!

Look at the bigger picture: If you work with an academic service, not only do you have more time to focus on your other responsibilities, but you also get to advance faster in your program and earn your diploma sooner!

And as you know, a college degree can provide an opportunity for a better job or promotion.

You will have your investment back once that occurs. Paying for help on your essay is one step to ensuring that your initial investment won’t be lost just because you failed an assignment.

Sometimes you may think that all your coursework relies entirely on your shoulders. Non-traditional students’ life is not easy. That could be true in an ideal world where everyone has plenty of time to do it all.

Student life is difficult, so worrying about a perfect essay shouldn’t feel like the end of the world when you can get help from a team of professional writers and study consultants with many years of experience.

BBQPapers — The Best Quality, Higher Price

SpeedyPaper — The Best Option for Research Papers

These sites are among the most popular and trustworthy, according to over 30,000 reviews from American students found on platforms such as Reddit, SiteJabber, TrustPilot, Facebook, and others. If you're interested in learning more about these companies, read on!

#1. PaperHelp

If you are looking for an affordable and professional essay writing company, you might want to check out PaperHelp.

Company’s age: 13 years

Turnaround time: 3 hours

Price per page: $13 and up

Writers: ENL and ESL

Most people find that PaperHelp offers a good middle ground where you aren’t paying a fortune, but you are still getting a good quality paper. You can use the price estimation tool to determine what the price is likely to be. There’s also a FAQ section that will help you out if you’ve got questions about how the site works.

This offers information about how to pay for the order, how you know your information will be kept private, and details about references.

The longevity of this site is also reassuring for customers. Many online essay-writing websites have only been around for a short period, and this is an indication that they may be dodgy. The scammers in charge of these sites simply change the name and branding when they get enough bad reviews. PaperHelp, though, has a reputation for providing work consistently.

One of PaperHelp’s biggest drawbacks is that it doesn’t offer a lot of customer support. If you run into any problems, you’re likely going to be waiting for hours to get a response. This is a problem if you’re working toward a deadline!

The good news is that the essays themselves usually come on time, and the quality is usually great.

#2. EssayPro

EssayPro is a popular and trusted website where you can pay for an essay by picking the best writer according to your specific requirements. This company has more than 1000 active writers, and the quality of your paper will depend on the writer you choose.

Company’s age: 6 years

Turnaround time: 6 hours

Price per page: $11.40 and up (bidding system)

Writers: ESL

You’ll get good customer support from EssayPro. The customer service team responds promptly and will answer any questions you have, both before and after you buy.

The company uses a bidding system which means you may pay a lower price for the essay. However, it’s frustratingly hard to know what you are going to end up with if you accept the lower bid.

Most people prefer to use sites where they know how much they will pay for essays right from the homepage. However, if you want to keep the price low and hire a cheap essay writer, this site may be worth considering.

It’s worth noting that the site does also provide research papers, so it’s something to consider if you need one of these. What is more, every paper comes with a free title page, outline, and originality report.

An essay writer at EssayPro can even imitate your writing style if you provide them with a few papers of yours that you wrote yourself.

#3. WritePaperForMe

WritePaperForMe is popular partly because if you don’t like the content you get, you can either request a rewrite or get a full refund. A lot of customers therefore feel safe using this site. You know you won’t get scammed with this service. Most of the site’s competitors will rarely offer full refunds.

Company’s age: 8 years

Price per page: $9.69 and up

As the name suggests, this site will help you deal with your “write my essay” request at any time. You know you’ll get an essay of at least average quality if you do work with this site. They also provide good customer service representatives, who will help out if you have any other issues.

One thing to be aware of is that although some essays can be done in less than 6 hours, you should allow longer. This is particularly important if you have a long paper. If you don’t give the professional writer enough time, you will not get a good quality paper.

It’s interesting to note that this site offers high quality without charging significantly more for it. For a high school essay of 1100 words with a two-week turnaround, you’ll be paying $27.96. A Ph.D. essay of the same length and deadline would be $71.96.

#4. BBQPapers

If you want to make sure that you are working with American expert writers specifically, BBQPapers might be a good option. This is a website that has no rivals in terms of quality of papers it produces.

Company’s age: 9 years

Price per page: $17.55 and up

Writers: ENL

However, even though BBQPapers is a reliable writing service, it is pretty expensive. On the site, they state that they charge $6.77 for 100 words – which can add up extremely fast. A 1000 word essay is going to cost you a pricey $67. If you want to pay for essay and stay on a budget, this option is probably not for you, as even short papers aren’t cheap with this service. They tend to work out at around $35 per page.

On the other hand, the essays are high quality, and are almost always delivered on time. This is a good opportunity to get some learning points and create a good piece. Most of the writers who work for this site are professional and produce high-quality work.

Their 9-year reputation also demonstrates that you are in safe hands, and you won’t get scammed. You should get your essay in time, and you will usually get something that will gain a reasonable grade.

#5. SpeedyPaper

As the name suggests, SpeedyPaper is generally good at ensuring that papers are delivered in time. However, this isn’t always the case – so do be aware of that before you submit a request. They aren’t guaranteed to manage it.

Company’s age: 7 years

Price per page: $11 and up

If you’re looking for a site that is easy to use, SpeedyPaper should be near the top of the list. It’s convenient and straightforward, and you can view samples of other essays that they have created. This helps you to judge whether the quality is in line with what you need.

It’s very easy to find what you need, choose options that suit your particular paper, and make your request. More importantly, SpeedyPaper puts a lot of effort into good customer satisfaction, and it lets you communicate directly with the writer who is doing your essay.

You can also use this if you need to request a change partway through, which really sets SpeedyPaper apart from some of the competition. That means you can ask them to add points to your essay later, as long as you are realistic and courteous about it. Most of the professional writers are happy to help.

The customer service team is helpful and offers prompt responses that will ensure you can resolve issues.

If you decide to stick with SpeedyPaper and pay for essay writing on this site, you should know that some of the academic papers can get very pricey very fast. If you want to pay for a college essay and have it written for you in 6 hours, the price per page will jump to $32.

If you want something at a Ph.D. level, you will be paying more than $50 for a single page. With how long Ph.D. papers can be, that’s going to get seriously expensive. A high school paper with the same deadline of 6 hours is just $26 per page, which is a big difference.

SpeedyPaper isn’t the cheapest service out there, but it offers better quality than many of the others. If you want to use your essay as an example to improve your own writing, consider this company.

Should I Pay Someone to Write My Paper?

You may desperately need a break, particularly if you are working long hours around your degree. Burning out is a serious problem that college students face, and it might feel like you can never get a break. If it’s a choice between attending classes, doing essays, going to work, and keeping yourself healthy, you might feel like this is the best option.

Of course, you should take into consideration some of the drawbacks of doing this. If you get caught using a paid-for service, you could get disqualified not only from that paper, but for your whole course. You might suffer from some major negative repercussions, and you should consider carefully whether this is truly something you want to do before you do it.

It’s worth noting too that many of the services available are not all that they claim to be. There are many, many low-quality essay writing services out there, and multiple problems will arise if you use them. One might be getting a low score on your paper, while another might be getting caught.

You should therefore be very cautious. There are reputable sites out there, and even some tutors offer this sort of service, but there are many duds too. Choosing with care is key to getting a good experience.

Often, the safest way to use this sort of service is to pay for an essay online, and then use that as your guide and write your own version. This does involve more work than just using the paid-for essay, but it has some advantages.

Firstly, you will be able to check that the essay is high quality and that the arguments presented within it are strong. You can return to the essay writing service if you are dissatisfied with something.

Secondly, you will be prepared to discuss the essay more thoroughly if your professor asks you about it, and you may be able to use the content in other areas (e.g. exams). This is vastly preferable.

Thirdly, you will be far less likely to get into trouble for using a service, because the final finished piece will be your own. This is the biggest advantage of not simply using the essay you are given, but instead turning it into your own piece based on the written work you’ve paid for.

A fourth advantage is that you will improve your written skills for future essays and other work. You can look at how the expert essay writer has approached the piece and take their example to improve your own approach in the future. This is of great value.

Whether you choose to do this or to just use the piece you have paid for, you need a high-quality site that you can trust to provide you with good work. With that in mind, let’s look at some of the options for getting a college essay online.

Common Questions About Companies That Write Essays For You

A lot of people are uncertain about using a company to write their essays – and that comes with a lot of questions. Many students who do this are desperately struggling to keep up with all their commitments, maintain their health, and not burn out.

However, there are some risks, and there are some problems associated with doing this, and it’s really important to understand all of these before you commit to using one of these services. Don’t do it just because you are struggling with an essay and you aren’t confident in your own abilities.

With all of that in mind, let’s look at some of the things you may be wondering about if you decided to pay someone to write an essay.

Is It Better To Write Your Own Papers?

Obviously, paying someone to write an essay for you is quicker and easier. In theory, it’s always best to write your own papers. College systems are based on students being honest about their writing abilities, and even if writing isn’t your strongest skill, doing it yourself has a lot of value. You’ll learn more about how to write well, what your weaknesses are, and what to change to succeed in future essays.

Furthermore, there are some very real risks associated with buying essays online. First of all, it is better to avoid using a cheap essay writing service. You should balance quality vs price with care. Remember, there’s no point in paying a really low price and getting a useless paper.

Hiring an essay writer might seem fine, since you aren’t copying work that appears elsewhere – but it is still technically cheating. You could get into major trouble with your college if you are caught, and being aware of this risk is critical.

You should carefully assess what is causing you to seek these services, and whether there are other options. For example, if you are struggling because of personal difficulties, you should find out whether you can get an extension on the piece, or some special consideration in terms of the marking.

If you are finding the subject difficult, talk to your tutor or ask other people in your class for assistance. Swapping essay papers with classmates is a great way to get informal feedback and ideas from somebody who knows the course well, and this isn’t usually considered cheating.

If your reasons for choosing an essay writer service are that you are bored and you don’t want to put in the effort, stop and think carefully before you proceed. Your entire course could be at stake if you are caught – so consider whether you could push yourself through and find some motivation somewhere.

Different people have different reasons for deciding to pay someone to write their papers, but consider how justifiable yours are, and whether you have explored other avenues for solving the problem before you go ahead with one of these services.

If you are going to pay to write essay for you, know that you will usually get the following as long as you use a reputable company:

A paper that is delivered on time

A paper that is the length you requested

Some discussion with the writer, and the ability to input information about what you want the essay to include

Some options to request corrections and changes

In certain situations, the right to a refund

Are There Risks Associated With Getting Somebody Else To Write My Essay?

We have already discussed some of the risks associated with paying for an essay, but it’s important to remember that while reputable companies will protect your information and do everything they can to protect you, this isn’t true for scammers.

If you don’t choose a reputable service, the risks exponentially increase. You may find that your essay is badly written and gets a very low grade. You may find that your essay appears elsewhere on the web and you run into problems with plagiarism.

You should therefore minimize the risks by choosing reputable companies. Opt for sites that have a good ranking on Google, and that have been in existence for some time. Don’t follow links to sites through social media, as the social media site may log your activity. This puts you at greater risk of discovery.

You don’t normally need to worry about the paper writer having access to your personal information, as the website will usually store this. However, you should make sure you feel comfortable with the site. Remember, you are going to have to give them payment information, so be very wary of scammers!

Are Essay Writing Services Legitimate?

On the whole, these businesses are legitimate and are registered with governments. This is not true for all, but it’s true for most. Their writers will be professional and should provide you with a good service.

However, you should always look at the reviews. Try to check on independent sites, rather than just the service’s own website. They can control what reviews appear, so these won’t be reliable. You should be able to find some sites that are dedicated to finding legitimate sites.

How Much Do These Services Cost?

The prices vary considerably from service to service. Although price shouldn’t be the top factor if you want a good grade, it’s certainly going to be an important consideration for most people – especially college students.

Most sites that offer college essays charge between $9 and $20 per page. Some will charge by the word count instead. In many cases, you can look at the numbers before you sign up for a service, and you should be very wary of any sites that won’t tell you their costs upfront.

Be cautious of sites that offer essays for very little money, too. Good quality, experienced writers cost money, and if you aren’t prepared to pay for somebody to put time and energy into your essay, you aren’t going to get a good result.

Before you settle on a service, check out the different price calculation tools that the sites offer, and make sure you select one that fits your budget and your essay needs. Don’t just go for the cheapest you can find, because it will almost invariably be low quality, plagiarized, and possibly late.

What Are The Main Reasons For Buying Essays?

People’s reasons for purchasing essays can vary, but in most cases, the people who buy essays have simply run out of time for writing. Other issues can include:

Lack of motivation

Lack of understanding of the course material

Personal problems (e.g. familial loss, housing problems, social problems, mental health problems)

Concerns about their grades

Inability to manage deadlines

When you first get to college, it can be really hard to manage your time well. A lot of students think that they can get an essay paper done in an evening or two – but that’s frequently not the case. If you’ve underestimated how long an essay will take you to write, you might be inclined to turn to a paper writing service.

For some students, it’s life challenges that prompt them to hire an online essay writer. If you’ve recently lost somebody important or if you’ve run into other difficulties, you might be struggling to keep your mind on your essays.

Similarly, balancing mental health problems can be a challenge with all the other changes that college brings about.

If your tutors and college help systems are not supportive, these services become more tempting. However, make sure you have followed up with people and asked for help before you turn to a paid-for service, because many colleges do offer support for students who are encountering difficulties.

In some cases, you may be tempted to hire a professional because you are worried about the quality of your own writing. However, bear in mind that if you do this and the quality of your essays wildly fluctuates because you are writing some yourself, your tutor may get suspicious. You might end up having to buy all of your essays for this reason.

It’s again better to get help from your tutors or other classmates if you can.

How Quickly Can Essays Be Produced?

This really depends on too many factors to offer any estimates. If your essay is long and complex and you’ve chosen a slow but cheap service, it will take far longer than a short, simple essay with a quick service.

Deadlines can be anything from 3 hours to 20 days. Shorter turnaround time requests may increase the cost of your essay, because writers will have to give you priority.

Are Paper Writing Services Technically Cheating?

This depends heavily on who you ask, but many people argue that essay writing services are not cheating because unique content is being produced. As long as the writer you have used hasn’t copied the content from anywhere else, it may not be viewed as cheating – by some institutions.

However, a lot of colleges and universities will treat a paid-for essay exactly the same way as a plagiarized essay, and you will not be given a grade for your essay at all, because it isn’t your work. You may also face further penalization, such as having other marks scrutinized.

For some people, cheating in this way could result in disqualification from the course or even the institution. You should therefore be extremely cautious about deciding to use an essay service. The results could be serious.

Are Professors Likely To Be Able To Detect A Purchased Paper?

Again, this is highly dependent on the situation. If you usually produce high-quality work and you buy a low-quality essay or research paper, it may invite some suspicion. The same is true in reverse.

If you buy from a cheap service and they plagiarize all or part of the content, you are also likely to get caught. If the professor is familiar with your writing and your paid-for essay sounds significantly different, you might have to answer some questions about it.

Many educational institutes use something called TurnItIn to search for plagiarism, and this informs them if your paper has been copied from somewhere. If your paper hasn’t been copied and the writer has produced completely original content, you’re less likely to get caught – but it could still happen if the tutor is familiar with your style.

Are Professional Writers Native English Speakers?

There isn’t a guarantee that you will get a native speaker when you use an essay writing service. That’s true even if you use something like BBQPapers, which claims its writers are all American. There is no way of knowing in advance, and you may not even be able to tell when you get the paper.

There are plenty of native speakers in this business, but you won’t know for sure either way.

Pay for Essay: Conclusion

If you are really stuck with coursework, essay writing services can be a tempting solution. However, bear in mind that they can cause you a lot more problems, either straight away or further along the line if the changes in style are detected.

If you are going to use a service, make sure you use a reputable one with plenty of history and reviews, or you are likely to end up with shoddy, plagiarized content that will score a very low grade.

The Beginner's Guide to Writing an Essay | Steps & Examples

An academic essay is a focused piece of writing that develops an idea or argument using evidence, analysis, and interpretation.

There are many types of essays you might write as a student. The content and length of an essay depends on your level, subject of study, and course requirements. However, most essays at university level are argumentative — they aim to persuade the reader of a particular position or perspective on a topic.

The essay writing process consists of three main stages:

  • Preparation: Decide on your topic, do your research, and create an essay outline.
  • Writing : Set out your argument in the introduction, develop it with evidence in the main body, and wrap it up with a conclusion.
  • Revision:  Check your essay on the content, organization, grammar, spelling, and formatting of your essay.

The writing process of preparation, writing, and revisions applies to every essay or paper, but the time and effort spent on each stage depends on the type of essay .

For example, if you’ve been assigned a five-paragraph expository essay for a high school class, you’ll probably spend the most time on the writing stage; for a college-level argumentative essay , on the other hand, you’ll need to spend more time researching your topic and developing an original argument before you start writing.

paying to write an essay

Before you start writing, you should make sure you have a clear idea of what you want to say and how you’re going to say it. There are a few key steps you can follow to make sure you’re prepared:

  • Understand your assignment: What is the goal of this essay? What is the length and deadline of the assignment? Is there anything you need to clarify with your teacher or professor?
  • Define a topic: If you’re allowed to choose your own topic , try to pick something that you already know a bit about and that will hold your interest.
  • Do your research: Read  primary and secondary sources and take notes to help you work out your position and angle on the topic. You’ll use these as evidence for your points.
  • Come up with a thesis:  The thesis is the central point or argument that you want to make. A clear thesis is essential for a focused essay—you should keep referring back to it as you write.
  • Create an outline: Map out the rough structure of your essay in an outline . This makes it easier to start writing and keeps you on track as you go.

Once you’ve got a clear idea of what you want to discuss, in what order, and what evidence you’ll use, you’re ready to start writing.

The introduction sets the tone for your essay. It should grab the reader’s interest and inform them of what to expect. The introduction generally comprises 10–20% of the text.

1. Hook your reader

The first sentence of the introduction should pique your reader’s interest and curiosity. This sentence is sometimes called the hook. It might be an intriguing question, a surprising fact, or a bold statement emphasizing the relevance of the topic.

Let’s say we’re writing an essay about the development of Braille (the raised-dot reading and writing system used by visually impaired people). Our hook can make a strong statement about the topic:

The invention of Braille was a major turning point in the history of disability.

2. Provide background on your topic

Next, it’s important to give context that will help your reader understand your argument. This might involve providing background information, giving an overview of important academic work or debates on the topic, and explaining difficult terms. Don’t provide too much detail in the introduction—you can elaborate in the body of your essay.

3. Present the thesis statement

Next, you should formulate your thesis statement— the central argument you’re going to make. The thesis statement provides focus and signals your position on the topic. It is usually one or two sentences long. The thesis statement for our essay on Braille could look like this:

As the first writing system designed for blind people’s needs, Braille was a groundbreaking new accessibility tool. It not only provided practical benefits, but also helped change the cultural status of blindness.

4. Map the structure

In longer essays, you can end the introduction by briefly describing what will be covered in each part of the essay. This guides the reader through your structure and gives a preview of how your argument will develop.

The invention of Braille marked a major turning point in the history of disability. The writing system of raised dots used by blind and visually impaired people was developed by Louis Braille in nineteenth-century France. In a society that did not value disabled people in general, blindness was particularly stigmatized, and lack of access to reading and writing was a significant barrier to social participation. The idea of tactile reading was not entirely new, but existing methods based on sighted systems were difficult to learn and use. As the first writing system designed for blind people’s needs, Braille was a groundbreaking new accessibility tool. It not only provided practical benefits, but also helped change the cultural status of blindness. This essay begins by discussing the situation of blind people in nineteenth-century Europe. It then describes the invention of Braille and the gradual process of its acceptance within blind education. Subsequently, it explores the wide-ranging effects of this invention on blind people’s social and cultural lives.

Write your essay introduction

The body of your essay is where you make arguments supporting your thesis, provide evidence, and develop your ideas. Its purpose is to present, interpret, and analyze the information and sources you have gathered to support your argument.

Length of the body text

The length of the body depends on the type of essay. On average, the body comprises 60–80% of your essay. For a high school essay, this could be just three paragraphs, but for a graduate school essay of 6,000 words, the body could take up 8–10 pages.

Paragraph structure

To give your essay a clear structure , it is important to organize it into paragraphs . Each paragraph should be centered around one main point or idea.

That idea is introduced in a  topic sentence . The topic sentence should generally lead on from the previous paragraph and introduce the point to be made in this paragraph. Transition words can be used to create clear connections between sentences.

After the topic sentence, present evidence such as data, examples, or quotes from relevant sources. Be sure to interpret and explain the evidence, and show how it helps develop your overall argument.

Lack of access to reading and writing put blind people at a serious disadvantage in nineteenth-century society. Text was one of the primary methods through which people engaged with culture, communicated with others, and accessed information; without a well-developed reading system that did not rely on sight, blind people were excluded from social participation (Weygand, 2009). While disabled people in general suffered from discrimination, blindness was widely viewed as the worst disability, and it was commonly believed that blind people were incapable of pursuing a profession or improving themselves through culture (Weygand, 2009). This demonstrates the importance of reading and writing to social status at the time: without access to text, it was considered impossible to fully participate in society. Blind people were excluded from the sighted world, but also entirely dependent on sighted people for information and education.

See the full essay example

The conclusion is the final paragraph of an essay. It should generally take up no more than 10–15% of the text . A strong essay conclusion :

  • Returns to your thesis
  • Ties together your main points
  • Shows why your argument matters

A great conclusion should finish with a memorable or impactful sentence that leaves the reader with a strong final impression.

What not to include in a conclusion

To make your essay’s conclusion as strong as possible, there are a few things you should avoid. The most common mistakes are:

  • Including new arguments or evidence
  • Undermining your arguments (e.g. “This is just one approach of many”)
  • Using concluding phrases like “To sum up…” or “In conclusion…”

Braille paved the way for dramatic cultural changes in the way blind people were treated and the opportunities available to them. Louis Braille’s innovation was to reimagine existing reading systems from a blind perspective, and the success of this invention required sighted teachers to adapt to their students’ reality instead of the other way around. In this sense, Braille helped drive broader social changes in the status of blindness. New accessibility tools provide practical advantages to those who need them, but they can also change the perspectives and attitudes of those who do not.

An essay is a focused piece of writing that explains, argues, describes, or narrates.

In high school, you may have to write many different types of essays to develop your writing skills.

Academic essays at college level are usually argumentative : you develop a clear thesis about your topic and make a case for your position using evidence, analysis and interpretation.

The structure of an essay is divided into an introduction that presents your topic and thesis statement , a body containing your in-depth analysis and arguments, and a conclusion wrapping up your ideas.

The structure of the body is flexible, but you should always spend some time thinking about how you can organize your essay to best serve your ideas.

Your essay introduction should include three main things, in this order:

  • An opening hook to catch the reader’s attention.
  • Relevant background information that the reader needs to know.
  • A thesis statement that presents your main point or argument.

The length of each part depends on the length and complexity of your essay .

A thesis statement is a sentence that sums up the central point of your paper or essay . Everything else you write should relate to this key idea.

The thesis statement is essential in any academic essay or research paper for two main reasons:

  • It gives your writing direction and focus.
  • It gives the reader a concise summary of your main point.

Without a clear thesis statement, an essay can end up rambling and unfocused, leaving your reader unsure of exactly what you want to say.

A topic sentence is a sentence that expresses the main point of a paragraph . Everything else in the paragraph should relate to the topic sentence.

At college level, you must properly cite your sources in all essays , research papers , and other academic texts (except exams and in-class exercises).

Add a citation whenever you quote , paraphrase , or summarize information or ideas from a source. You should also give full source details in a bibliography or reference list at the end of your text.

The exact format of your citations depends on which citation style you are instructed to use. The most common styles are APA , MLA , and Chicago .

The correct way to communicate your degree to employers and others is by using the following formats:

Degree - This is the academic degree you are receiving. Your major is in addition to the degree; it can be added to the phrase or written separately.  Include the full name of your degree, major(s), minor(s), emphases, and certificates on your resume.

Double Majors - You will not be receiving two bachelor's degrees if you double major. Your primary major determines the degree (Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science). If you're not fully sure which of your majors is primary, check CheckMarq or call the registrar's office.

Example: Primary Major: Psychology ; Secondary Major: Marketing
  • Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology & Marketing

Primary Major: Marketing ; Secondary Major: Psychology

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing & Psychology

In a letter, you may shorten your degree by writing it this way:

  • In May 20XX, I will graduate with my Bachelor's degree in International Affairs.
  • In December 20XX, I will graduate with my Master's degree in Counseling Education.

Not sure which degree you are graduating with? Here is a list of Undergraduate Majors and corresponding degrees:

  • College of Arts & Sciences
  • College of Business Administration
  • College of Communication
  • College of Education
  • College of Engineering
  • College of Health Sciences
  • College of Nursing

Written Essay and Video Essay submissions must meet all of the requirements described in the contest Official Rules. Your Written Essay or Video Essay must be (i) in English, (ii) your own original work, created solely by you (and without the use of any means of artificial intelligence (“AI”)), and (iii) the exclusive property of you alone.

Written Essays must be 500 words or less. You can write your Written Essay directly in the application, or you can copy and paste it into the appropriate area in the application form.

Tips to Record Quality Videos on a Smartphone:

  • Don’t shoot vertical video. Computer monitors have landscape-oriented displays, so shoot your video horizontally.
  • Use a tripod. Even small movements can make a big difference when editing.
  • Don’t use zoom. If you need to get a close shot of the subject, move closer as zooming can cause pixilation.
  • Use natural lighting. Smartphone lighting can wash out your video.

IR-2024-106, April 11, 2024

WASHINGTON — With the April 15 tax filing deadline fast approaching, the Internal Revenue Service reminds taxpayers who need more time to file their return that receiving an extension is quick and easy through IRS Free File on IRS.gov. An extension gives taxpayers an automatic six more months – until Oct. 15 this year – to file their tax return.

The IRS also reminds taxpayers that payments are still due by the original deadline, even if they request an extension of time to file a tax return. Taxpayers should file even if they can't pay the full amount.

Use IRS Free File to get an extension online

One of the fastest and easiest ways to get an extension is through IRS Free File on IRS.gov. All individual tax filers, regardless of income, can electronically request Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return PDF , by using the IRS Free File partner software on IRS.gov.

To get an extension, taxpayers must estimate their tax liability on this form and file it by April 15, 2024.

By filing either a return on time or requesting an extension by the April 15 filing deadline, people avoid the late-filing penalty, which can be 10 times as costly as the penalty for not paying.

More time to file, not more time to pay

While an extension allows for extra time to gather, prepare and file paperwork, it's important to remember that an extension of time to file taxes is not an extension of time to pay. Taxpayers who owe should pay their entire obligation, or as much as they can, by the April 15 deadline to avoid penalties and interest.

Taxpayers who pay as much as they can by the due date reduce the overall amount subject to penalty and interest charges. The interest rate for an individual's unpaid taxes is currently 7%, compounded daily. The late-filing penalty is generally 5% per month and the late-payment penalty is normally 0.5% per month, both of which max out at 25%.

Make a payment and get an extension, automatically

Other fast, free and easy ways to get an extension include using IRS Direct Pay , the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System or by paying with a credit or debit card or digital wallet . There is no need to file a separate Form 4868 extension request when making an electronic payment and indicating it is for an extension. The IRS will automatically count it as an extension.

The IRS will work with taxpayers who cannot pay the full amount of tax they owe. Other options to pay, such as getting a loan or paying by credit card, may help resolve a tax debt. Most people can set up a payment plan on IRS.gov to pay off their balance over time.

Some taxpayers get automatic extensions

Special rules offer some taxpayers more time without having to request an extension:

  • U.S. citizens and resident aliens who live and work outside of the United States and Puerto Rico get an automatic two-month extension, until June 15, to file their tax returns. However, tax payments are still due April 15 or interest will accrue on the unpaid tax.
  • Members of the military on duty outside the United States and Puerto Rico also receive an automatic two-month extension to file. Those serving in combat zones have up to 180 days after they leave the combat zone to file returns and pay any taxes due. Details are available in Publication 3, Armed Forces' Tax Guide .
  • When the U.S. president makes a disaster area declaration, the IRS can postpone certain tax deadlines for taxpayers in affected areas. Taxpayers in qualified disaster areas do not need to submit an extension electronically or on paper. Information on the most recent tax relief for disaster situations can be found on the Extension of time to file your tax return page.

More Americans are freelancing — and as demand for independent workers surges, so has the availability of high-paying freelance opportunities.

The number of professionals freelancing in the U.S. hit an all-time high in 2023, increasing to 64 million people, or 38% of the U.S. workforce, from 60 million the year earlier according to recent research from Upwork.

Businesses are increasingly relying on freelancers to save on headcount and real estate expenses, Yoav Hornung, head of verticals and innovation at Fiverr, recently told CNBC Make It .

Many of these project-based jobs can come with six-figure payouts. The number of independent workers making $100,000 or more a year grew by 53% between 2021 and 2023, according to an October 2023 report by MBO Partners, a provider of back-office services to independent workers.

But the services people are hiring independent contractors for are constantly changing. To help freelancers find the best opportunities, Freelancer.com has identified five in-demand freelance jobs , based on more than 250,000 listings posted on its database between January and March 2024. The earnings information comes from this sample of projects.

All of these jobs can be done from home and pay over $100 per hour:

1. Programming

Average hourly rate: $250

2. eCommerce development and management

3. graphic design .

Average hourly rate: $140

4. Transcription

Average hourly rate: $200

5. Creative writing

While coding, programming and other tech specialties have long been sought-after freelance services, demand for e-commerce contractors has "exploded" in recent months, Sebastián Siseles, international vice president at Freelancer.com, tells CNBC Make It .

The global e-commerce market has been steadily growing over the last several years, a trend that was accelerated during the Covid-19 pandemic when more companies had to shift to online business models. This has sparked demand for other freelance services related to running an e-commerce site, Siseles points out, including user interface design and copywriting.

If you're interested in freelancing, make sure you understand the timeline of the job you're applying for and how you'll be compensated. Freelance jobs may last for part of a day, a week, a month, a year or even longer — and while some jobs are priced hourly, others might have a fixed project rate.

You can also set yourself apart as a freelancer by creating a digital portfolio of work samples to share with prospective clients. To find out where the jobs are and list your own services, consider creating a profile on Upwork, Freelancer.com, Fiverr, TaskRabbit or a different website advertising freelance jobs.
