Almost everyone thinks that it is right to drink and drive themselves home or even to town. In the recent years, drunk driving has risen among the teens.

Nevertheless, drunk driving is the primary cause of road accidents that lead to serious consequences including death. Drunk driving mostly happens after maybe a party with friends or even just consuming alcoholic drinks in a club, and one has to drive home. Alcohol impairs once sight and judgment, this is one of the writings found in nearly all alcoholic drinks bottles, but human beings still want to drive with impaired sight. Alcohol gives one an invincible feeling thus leading people to drink and drive. However, this is not the right choice since its consequences are fatal. Drunk driving ought to be addressed and avoided. Surprisingly, most people who are caught up in drunk driving are underage.

The drunk driving behavior may result in many devastating and unwanted effects. To begin with, it is the principal cause of fatal accidents. When a sober driver and a drunk are put into a comparison, the drunk driver is likely to cause a road accident. In case an accident occurs, there may be dead casualties who probably were under no influence. People who may be lucky to survive in the crash may be left with partial injuries or complete disabilities. Another vital effect of drinking is that when one is caught drunk and driving by the traffic police officers, a bad record of them is written, and therefore their reputation is ruined, and they may even lose their driving license. The consequences of drunk driving are distinctly serious.

Since drunk driving has devastating effects, it is important to consider ways that are likely to reduce or if possible eliminate incidents of drunk driving. By doing this, the people will understand that drunk driving is never an option and that drunk driving can be fatal and dangerous. The people will figure out why it would be safer to take a taxi home or tag along a driver when they are going to drink at parties and clubs. By doing this, the individuals are guaranteed a safe drive home. Moreover, doing this is much better than drinking and driving home under the alcoholic influence. All nations should enact strict laws against drunk driving.

In conclusion, it is clear that drunk driving is a major problem that exists in the world today, the same causes many tragedies for many people in different places. All drivers have the responsibility of ensuring that they drive while they are sober so as to be assured of safe arrival to their destinations and so that they cannot put into danger their lives or the lives of their passengers. At times drinking may seem harmless, but it is especially when one is going to operate vehicles. Hopefully, in future, the people who drink and drive will be caught more and will be subjected to heavy penalties. By doing this, drunk driving will reduce, and with time it will stop. Although each one has crime, no man deserves to die because of another man’s mistake. It will be well if, in few years to come, the statistics, risks, and results of drunk driving will be minimal and will eventually come to an end.

Driving while drunk is collectively known as impaired driving where one drives when under alcohol or any other drug influence. In some countries such as Canada, drinking and driving is an offence and one could be jailed for although cancelling of driving licenses and fines are the most used punishments for such offences.

Driving while one is intoxicated or drunk poses great danger to drivers since they are more likely to get vehicle accidents which may involve injuries or even deaths to themselves and their passengers (if there are any). Many countries especially the UK have set different blood alcohol concentration for drivers to help prevent road accidents.

Driving while drunk has been, for many years, under discussions as the number of vehicle accidents are increasing every day in our roads. Drugs affect one’s ability to react to normal and small things that happen instantly especially when driving.

The concentration of alcohol in a driver’s blood is directly proportional to the driver’s ability to judge distances as well react appropriately to sudden happenings in the road. For instance, the number of deaths of single vehicle drivers registering high blood alcohol content is hundreds times more than those of the same drivers but with a zero blood alcohol content.

What makes the matter worse is the fact that some people drink to the extent of getting blurred vision but still they go on and drive. This situation is worsened more when a blurred driver is driving at night especially in areas where there are no street lights. To many people, drugs that affect one’s ability to drive safely are only the illegal drugs such as marijuana and bhang.

However, these include many of the prescription drugs and the over the counter drugs as long as the drug changes one’s mood or ability to see properly. Ignorance such side effects from the prescription drugs have contributed to a certain percentage of road accidents especially drugs that cause drowsiness. It is therefore up to the driver to plan not to drive if after all he is planning on drinking.

Enquiring from doctors about the side effects associated with prescription medications is also a good move in combating the problem. Some of these drugs, when combined with alcohol, have more drastic effects than either of them could by themselves (Hanson, 2009, p. 1).

Similar to many other social problems in the society today, drinking and driving has not been able to be stopped by the simple rules such as road signs.

As a result, other measures have been taken to effectively reduce the vice. Many countries have now implemented the automatic annulment of one’s license which has proved to be one of the most effective measures towards solving the problem because naturally, no one would want for his license to be cancelled. This has caused many drivers to be cautious on the same matter.

Mandatory jail sentence is also another effective way of getting drivers to avoid driving while they are drunk. Cessation of number plates may be as well an effective method of solving this problem. Laws should be put into place to prevent movement of certain vehicles whose drivers violate the ‘don’t drink and drive rule’.

The use of an alcohol blow gadget that detects the content of one’s alcohol has been helpful in determining drunk drivers in many countries. This makes it possible to identify and therefore punish the defective drivers. Setting up social programs that address the problems and risks associated with drunk driving may as well enlighten the drivers and give them a reason to take the matter seriously.

Restrictions to prevent night time driving especially among the youth who are always going to late night drinking parties could also prevent vehicle accidents. This may also involve getting a designated driver or one may choose to walk home instead of driving.

However, if you have to drink and drive, it is advisable for one to stay sober by either limiting the number of drinks (this differs with many people). Another way of staying sober is by eating protein rich foods such as especially meat while drinking to help lower the body’s rate of alcohol absorption (Hanson, 2009, p. 1).

It is disturbing how drinking and driving habits has caused many deaths on our roads. Many road accidents have been associated with careless driving resulting from drunk drivers. This is because many drugs lower the driver’s ability to coordinate his thoughts and respond to sudden happenings on the roads.

Due to the increase in road accidents, many countries have gone beyond the normal road signs rules to putting other strict measures into place in an effort to prevent these occurrences. Among the most effective measures that have worked in many nations are: jail sentencing or fining and annulment of one’s driving license.

By now it should be clear to every driver that careful driving (either sober or drunk), is all for one’s benefit as well as the other people around him. Drivers should therefore be responsible enough to ensure safety on the roads without being pushed by the law.

• ( Credibility Statement ) – As a college student I am aware of the dangers that come with this new life style. We all have to think about how we are going to get home that night and with whom. We need to make sure students think about these things ahead of time and that they are aware of the consequences that come with drinking.
• In 2013, 10,076 people died in drunk driving crashes- one every 52 minutes- and 290,000 were injured in drunk driving crashes.
• Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens, and about a quarter of those crashes involve an underage drinking driver.
• (Thesis) –This ad created by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism really connects to the reader by establishing kairos seeing as graduation season recently occurred, and pathos because we can all relate to graduation and how it is an important turning point in ones life.
• NIH uses the event of graduation to establish a connection with audiences of all ages because we are either experiencing it now, going to experience it at some point, or already experienced it.
• Around graduation time is when students tend to go wild because they are about to be done with high school and they are getting ready to go into the real world as adults, therefore most teens try to act older than they are to get ready for what lies ahead of them. • The throwing of the caps appeals to the viewer’s emotions because we all know how important graduation is. It is considered the true start of adult hood when we go out on our own in the real world.
• It also appeals to our emotions because of the slogan “Make sure this is the only thing flying high after graduation.” It makes the viewer imagine someone losing their life because their car went flying because they were driving under the influence. It’s sad to think that so many kids lose their lives around the time when they are truly supposed to be starting them.

(Transition) – Now that we have considered the main subject of the ad, we need to look at how this appeals to ideology and how this is civic?

• People (old and young) think they can get away with drinking and driving.  It never has a good outcome.  Those who think they can get away with it do it regularly and end up seriously injuring themselves or others. Eventually, it never ends well.
• This ad is asking the viewers to be responsible and to make sure they think about the consequences of drinking. It’s also asking the viewers to report any underage drinking to help prevent any tragedies.

These are some reasons why this ad by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism is so affective. The roles that pathos and kairos play in this ad definitely make a very persuasive and compelling argument to not drink and drive. When a person drinks and drives it not only affects them but it also affects everyone around them. When you drink and drive you hold the lives of others and yourself in your hands. That was the last thing thought before getting in an accident and being killed. Everyone knows that drinking and driving is illegal but most people never take that thought into mind before getting behind the wheel.
