Personal and Teaching Statements

This page offers some guidelines for writing personal statements and teaching statements.

Guidelines for Writing a Personal Statement

A personal statement is, in fact, a research statement. You need to follow a certain structure or at least provide certain information. Try to keep it short - only one or two pages - since you are sending it to a very busy person! Try to avoid describing what you did as a child. Most academics are not interested, so including this information would most likely only hurt your application.

Click here to see a sample statement.

1st Paragraph

Describe the area of research that interests you and why. If you have already done some research work in this area, be sure to mention it. Also, explain why you think you are suitable for this area. You may also describe competitions in the area that you have done well in and special academic attainments. For example, a double major in mathematics and computer science probably set you apart from students who only studied computer science. If you have nothing special to say, then just mention briefly how you came to choose this area.

2nd Paragraph

Describe research programs you have worked on (one paragraph per program.)

  • What did you find?
  • What did you learn?
  • What approaches did you try?
  • Did these approaches work or not?

3rd Paragraph

Explain why you feel you need a Masters degree or PhD.

4th Paragraph

Tell the reader why you want to go to that particular university. Make it easy for them:

  • If you want to work with a particular person or persons tell them who you want to work with and why.
  • If you want to work in a particular area, tell them why you want to work in that area in their university.
  • If there is no particular person you want to work with or particular area you want to work in, explain why you would like to join their program.

5th Paragraph

You can also state what papers you have read from that university and what you enjoyed about them or how they inspired you. Lastly, tell them what you hope to gain from their university.

Different from a personal statement, a teaching statement focuses on your philosophy of education and teaching experience. You can highlight any innovative lessons you have designed and taught and include any positive feedback you have received either from your supervisors or the students themselves. Try to make your enthusiasm and motivation for teaching obvious. Try to keep the statement to two pages or less, especially if you are also sending a personal statement and CV.

Since this type of statement is more difficult to put into a specific structure than a personal statement, try include all the elements mentioned above and then e-mail it to your communication tutor for copy editing.

After you write a draft of your statement, please send it to your communication tutor for copy editing.

How to Write the Perfect Personal Statement when Applying to Universities in Hong Kong for an Undergraduate Degree?

The personal statement is the application component in which the students have the opportunity to articulate their skills and experience. This section is an essential component in your application when applying to universities in Hong Kong for an undergraduate degree.

What is a Personal Statement?

A Personal Statement is a very important part of your application because it is an opportunity for you to showcase your skills, personality and achievements to the university. It is a 4000-character essay written by you which allows universities to understand why you are applying and why you are the best fit for the university.

While writing your personal statement, make sure to answer:

  • What is your background?
  • What have you achieved?
  • What have you done which stands out from other applicants?
  • Why are you a good fit for the course?
  • Why do you want to study in Hong Kong?
  • How can you contribute to the University?
  • What have you learnt from your previous experiences?

Tips to write a good personal statement

To produce an effective and well written personal statement, we have a few tips:

  • First off, plan the structure of the essay. Do this by creating a mind map which will include your background, your extracurricular activities, why you want to apply and other important details.
  • Emphasize the things you have done and the experiences you have been through. This could include a personal story or an anecdote which stands out from other applicants.
  • Be honest about your strengths, achievements and most importantly, make it your own work.
  • Remember to always keep in mind the character count. The personal statement should be coherent, concise and easy to understand.
  • Make sure to proofread your essay . Grammatical errors, sentence structure and language play a very important role as they can greatly influence your application decision.

Remember that the personal statement speaks about you so the most important thing is to be yourself while writing the personal statement.

If you need help with personal statements or application essays, get in touch with our university-specific mentors at UniRely. For more information, please visit our website unirely.com to learn more about the process of applying to universities in HK for an undergraduate degree.

How To Write A Personal Statement Letter: A Sample

Have you ever tried impressing somebody that you went to great lengths to get their approval? It’s the same way as writing a personal statement letter.

China Admissions supports international students throughout their application journey. During document preparation, a common question that always pops up is, “how do you write a personal statement letter?”

Before we share our best tips to write an excellent personal statement letter, it’s important that you understand the purpose of this letter and how it can increase your chances of getting accepted into your chosen university.

What is the Purpose of a Personal Statement Letter?

A personal statement letter is a promotional essay about yourself. Sounds so “out there”, right? But it’s true. This kind of letter is a reflective essay that showcases your own interesting story, and why you’re a great candidate to the course/university you’re applying to.

Contrary to what most students believe, admission committees actually scrutinize every applicant’s personal statement letter. Although they consider other credentials, the personal statement letter has weight in identifying worthy applicants.

Best Tips To Write An Excellent Personal Statement Letter

We suggest you write in the format below. Make sure you emphasize the following:

  • your background;
  • why you want to apply to the program and;
  • what you plan to do in the future and how it will help you.

Here’s a sample personal statement letter that you can follow:

Your Name Your Address Date University Name University Address Dear Sir/Madam, (Introduction) My name is <your name> from <your country> and I would like to to apply to the <program> at <your university>. A paragraph introducing your background, academic ability, and discusswhat makes you a strong candidate. A paragraph explaining why you are interested in the program and how you found out about the program. You can also mention people who helped you such as China Admissions or friends in China. Explain what you know about the program and what are the strengths of the program. Show that you’ve done your homework and that you understand the program and university. A paragraph explaining your future plans and career goals, how the program will help you, and what you plan to achieve in the future. (Conclusion) Briefly summarize the content of your letter. Thank the reader for taking the time to review your application (e.g. “I look forward to the opportunity to study at your university.”) Yours sincerely, <Your name and signature> <Your email> <your phone number>

SOP for Hong Kong: How to Write a Statement of Purpose for Hong Kong Universities & Student Visa?

Author_Image

USA, UK, Canada, and Germany!! Oh, wait! maybe the Netherlands or Australia? Are you tired of mainstream study destinations? Perhaps you can choose something far away from the familiar crowd—Hong Kong! Hong Kong is now becoming a cosmopolitan and competitive hotspot for ambitious students. But is getting admission to Hong Kong universities or a study visa easy? No, the students must present various critical documents, SOP for Hong Kong among the priorities.

But how can one prepare an impressive SOP for Hong Kong universities/student visa? Let’s explore this guide to get the answer to this question and unveil other facets of an SOP Hong Kong.

SOP Guidelines of Hong Kong Universities/Student Visa

The guidelines for Hong Kong SOP are slightly different but easily manageable. Most of the universities in Hong Kong either ask for a personal statement or an SOP. They generally accept an SOP of 1000 words. However, the guidelines might vary a bit based on the type of course/program. Let’s dive right into them!

  • For Undergraduates : Hong Kong universities are looking for two things, particularly from an undergraduate—motivation and ambition. All you need to do is describe how you developed an interest in the subject of your choice and how choosing this subject will help you in your academic and professional growth. Don't forget to mention why you have singled out Hong Kong from the rest to pursue your education.
  • For Postgraduates: Something crucial for the admission criteria is “experience.” This “experience” can be professional in terms of work experience or personal projects related to academics or real-life implementations. So, focus on your role in projects and link them as of prime importance and relevance to your course.

Make sure you don't fill up the SOP Hong Kong with minute details of your projects. Also, your employment history should be well described, including your designation, the skills acquired, and the qualities developed or showcased while working. Please link how the MS degree and others will help shape your career. If there is no prompt, focus on your motivation to pursue MS in a specific subject or other courses.

How to Write an SOP Hong Kong?

Planning to write an effective sample SOP for Hong Kong student visa and university? We have devised the following structure, which you can employ to cumulate your write-up.

Paragraph 1: Introduction

Choose the most significant experience from your repertoire to illustrate how this experience inspired you to choose the stream of study. The focus should be on the relevance of this experience to the program you're applying to. Your introduction should give the reader a meticulous context for your academic plans. Keep it concise, to the point, and impactful.

Paragraph 2: Body

The focus of this paragraph should be your academic journey to date. Talk about significant courses from your undergraduate curriculum and how these have led you to conduct projects or research related to the field.

Paragraph 3

In the third paragraph, discuss your academic projects and internships and what you have learned from these experiences. Use a forward-thinking approach to illustrate how you look forward to working on advanced possibilities for research in similar or related fields in your master's.

Paragraph 4

If you have had any significant academic or professional gap in your career, you can discuss that briefly in the fourth paragraph, focusing on the positive outcomes from the experiences. If you do not have significant gaps to explain, use this paragraph to touch upon relevant co-curricular or extracurriculars briefly. Here, you can also discuss if you have contributed to environmental causes.

Paragraph 5

If you have professional experience, you can discuss it in the fifth paragraph. Touch upon the knowledge gaps you have identified and how pursuing the program will help you address these. Why do you want to enrol in the program at this point in your life?

Paragraph 6: Conclusion

This is the most crucial part of your SOP for Hong Kong. Devise this paragraph starting with why you have chosen the program and the university. If you're applying to more than one program or considering inter-disciplinary research, you can discuss that here. Follow this up with your future academic plans, future research interests/goals, and how the program will help you achieve those. How do the courses, facilities, etc, suit your overall academic profile?

Common Reasons for Hong Kong Student Visa Rejection

SOP Requirements of Top Hong Kong Universities

Universities update their SOP requirements yearly. It is essential to write an SOP as per the given university prompts. Let’s check a few common ones!

  • The University of Hong Kong : If you are planning to apply here, then keep in mind that this university requires eight pages of a research paper for a research-related program, including your past research experience and the field you wish to explore in the university. You must write about the research methodology, research gap, and literature review that you will use/have used in your research.
  • The Chinese University of Hong Kong : This university accepts only a 500-word SOP for the MA course. Besides, it requires a personal statement describing why you have chosen a particular program, and you also need to complete it within two A4 size papers. So more than sharing your personal experience here, you need to focus on your academic journey.
  • City University Hong Kong : This university requires a 1000 words mandatory SOP from international students. Along with your education and work experience, you need to write a paragraph on any course-related topic you want to pursue in your postgraduation/graduation.
  • Hong Kong Polytechnic University : This university states that the word limit of your statement of purpose varies according to the course structure, ranging from 200 to 1000 words. It is imperative to note that you must write everything in two A4 size papers. The font should be Times New Roman, and the size should be 11/12 pts if the university supplies no new prompts.

With so many steps, it can become daunting to write an actionable SOP for Hong Kong universities and students visa.

  • Simple English is the best English:

HK Personal Statement Coaching

Hong kong personal statement coaching.

Each student applying to universities in Hong Kong via the non-JUPAS route is required to submit a personal statement. The personal statement is a crucial part of the admissions process, and an opportunity for students to highlight their strengths, passion for the subject, and relevant experiences to the admissions officers.

At CANA, our consultants guide each student individually for the personal statement, from providing recommended resources based on the student’s interest, having in-depth discussions about the student’s experiences, to giving detailed feedback and suggestions for each draft.

When to start writing the Personal Statement?

Generally, we recommend students to buffer 2 months to write the statement, as it takes time to read about the subject and reflect on your learnings.

Another recommendation is for students to work on the statement during the summer before the final school year - that would allow them to focus on the writing before the new term starts in September.

What to include in the Personal Statement?

For personal statements, we advise students to reflect on their personal journeys and why they are inspired to choose certain programs.

It is equally important to demonstrate your academic interest through discussing subject-related experiences or readings. For example, if you are applying for medical-related subjects, you can describe your observations from a shadowing experience or hospital internship. For reading-focused subjects, such as law, you can centre on further readings in the subject area, as well as your analysis and key takeaways from the texts.

Finally, you can emphasize your strengths and interests by detailing your extra-curricular activities to show the admissions officers why you are suitable for the programs you are applying for.

The way you format your HKU personal statement directly influences its acceptance rate. Stick to the following HKU personal statement word limit and other formatting factors.

How to Write a Winning Personal Statement for Hong Kong University In 6 Steps?

Now, let’s get started with writing the city university of Hong Kong personal statement. Follow these step-by-step instructions.

Read about Hong Kong and HKU:

As you are specifically required to talk about the factors that draw you to HKU and Hong Kong, read about them to develop a strong perspective to show your motivation.

Understand the requirements:

Like other universities, HKU has its own admission criteria and personal statement requirements. Refer to the official HKU website and understand the requirements.  Also, review a few HKU personal statement examples.

Make your outline:

It is important to make an outline incorporating every point in your checklist first. Verify that your outline doesn’t overlap any point which is obvious elsewhere. For instance, your GPA score.

Build your points:

Once your outline is ready, develop each point. If you get stuck at the introduction, leave it and carry on with the rest of the body. Come to the introduction at last and write it without causing it to contradict the body.

Modify your sentences:

After you have finished, read the personal statement wholly and then word by word. If any word or sentence looks incoherent, modify them appropriately. Also, replace complicated words with simple ones.

Get it reviewed:

Finally, get your personal statement reviewed by an expert, a colleague or a professor who can guide you. They could read it from a different angle and spot areas where your write-up lacks engagement, readability and accuracy.

HKU Personal Statement Examples

The structure of the oral region has always fascinated me, considering its overall impact on facial construction. Considering that the human face enjoys utmost exposure, as compared to other parts of the body, my choice to become a dentist was a natural outcome of my instinct. I was 15 when I read ‘The Smile Stealers’. It was then that the history of dentistry appealed to my intellect. Nurturing this innocent interest with care, here I stand today, ready to embrace a dynamic career in dentistry. A person’s appearance and image largely rest on the way he/she talks, smiles and presents incidents. Given that a significant section of people across the globe experience difficulties due to injury in their oral region, a logical choice for me would be to put on the mask of a dentist.

In an effort to gain a better insight into the area of my interest, I capitalized on my last summer internship. Integrating myself into several dentistry settings, I gained first-hand knowledge for four weeks. Thoroughly enjoying the fresh knowledge-acquisition process, I worked on orthodontics and implants. Most importantly, I realized that dentists need to go beyond their core skills while establishing a compassionate association with their patients. Besides, I talked to experienced dentists to learn how frustrating and stressful certain patients and cases can be. All these experiences strengthened my desire to be a part of the dentistry world and take care of patients who are suffering.

Besides, I enhanced my foundational knowledge in dentistry, undertaking a job at a local clinic in Mumbai, India. This was an invaluable learning experience for me. During this phase, I came to realize the value that soft and hard skills in dentistry hold for the professionals. In particular, I carried out dental drills, which helped me gain manual dexterity. Apart from this, I was fascinated with the processes like laser frenectomy and other procedures that dentists carried out on the gums. This mechanism enabled the patient to gain normal movement of the lower lip, which previously got strained from the gum. This was the first time I saw how a CO2 laser works practically. I realized the depth of dentistry, as the professional used a specific dye and killed the bacteria around the oral region. Most importantly, the patient enjoyed a joyous experience, and I look forward to bestowing such gratifying feelings to my patients in the coming years.

I also noticed how the dentists developed a rapport with the patients at the outset, so that they felt at ease. It was interesting for me to study the different social elements in the life of each patient. However, the end goal of the dentists was to establish the rapport. Eventually, I realized that communication and interpersonal skills hold the secret for success for reputed dentists.

Apart from being consistent in my academics, I have demonstrated my competence in trekking, playing saxophone and flute. In the summer of 2016, I embarked on an expedition to Nepal, climbing the highest peak in the world. During this expedition, I combated both mental and physical challenges. My energetic character keeps me active. In several programs and assemblies, I have played the flute and the saxophone. I also love interacting with people, as it enhances my confidence and communication skills. Rather than playing solo, I prefer playing these instruments in small orchestras. This is where every musician works together, complementing each other’s efforts. The cohesive efforts result in a mellifluous symphony, the secret of which lies in teamwork.

I have been a fervent learner all these years and would like to be a part of the sophisticated academic environment at your institute. Aligning my passion and professional goals, I hereby commit myself to the dentistry profession. A berth in your revered institution would propel me closer to my professional goals. I look forward to integrating myself into the progressive student community at your university.

Composing a personal statement using personal statement humour is not as easy as in a college essay. You’ve got to focus on the idea and flow of thoughts to be concise and go straight to the point. Besides, consider if you create an HKU personal statement for a postgraduate application or an undergraduate one. This can have a bearing on how you write your documents and what you write in them.

✰  Don’t miss the opportunity and get a winning HKUST personal statement now!  ✰

A graduate school personal statement is more challenging to write since HKU officers would expect more from your output compared to what they would expect from an undergraduate statement. It can be difficult for some people, which is what personal statement services are usually for.

Nevertheless, let’s make it easier by following these dos and don’ts when composing your HKU personal statement:

  • Use the allowable number of words and include as much as you can while being concise and direct to the point
  • Showcase your strengths
  • Integrate your personality when composing your HKU personal statement
  • Add significant details and share relevant experiences
  • Show your interest in your chosen HKU program

Additional context on the protest at Kelvin Smith Library Oval: May 6, 2024

To the Case Western Reserve community,

Today marks one week since protesters began an encampment on the Kelvin Smith Library Oval. The ongoing conflict at the center of this protest is a complex, often personal issue about which many in our university community feel passionately, but the devastating loss of Israeli and Palestinian lives should be a distress we all share.

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to meet with elected undergraduate student leaders, who shared with me their perspectives—and those of the wide range of students they represent. I want to thank them for taking the time to have this discussion amidst finals, and for the care and commitment they show in their roles.

During our meeting, these leaders noted that many members of our community, especially students, are unaware of the history of administration’s attempts over the years at discussion with CWRU Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), a student organization whose leaders are heading the protest on Kelvin Smith Library Oval. At the elected student leaders’ suggestion, I wanted to provide additional context that may help explain the ongoing encampment and the university’s response.

The protesters have issued a series of demands, several having to do with a 2022 resolution passed by the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) about which many current students may not be aware. To enable fuller understanding, I wanted to recap the situation briefly.

USG Resolution 31-51 called for the university to divest assets from “Israeli apartheid,” among other requests. In response, I sent this communication to the university community, and subsequently I met with USG leadership as well as leaders of CWRU SJP to more clearly express my intentions. Divestment—a key component of the protesters’ demands—is and remains something the university will not do.

I want to reiterate that individuals are free to express their opposition to the university’s position on any range of issues—including this one—in accordance with the guidelines in our freedom of expression policy . It is never acceptable, however, to protest with signs, chants or other actions that are intimidating to members of our campus community, as has occurred in some cases this past week at the Kelvin Smith Library Oval.

This academic year, there have been multiple instances in which CWRU SJP’s advocacy has violated the university’s community standards, including vandalism. Ultimately, after multiple attempts at engagement with CWRU SJP leaders, some of these actions led to an interim suspension of its student organization status, which our student conduct team has tried to work toward resolution.

On Monday, April 29, members of CWRU SJP and their allies formed an encampment on Kelvin Smith Library Oval—an act that violates multiple aspects of the university’s freedom of expression policy regarding the appropriate time, place and manner for such activities, including disruption of university operations.

Still, appreciating their commitment and in a gesture of trust, members of the administration worked with CWRU SJP leaders and made an exception on Monday to rules to allow students, faculty and staff (with CWRU IDs) to remain overnight if outside community members left by 8 p.m.—an approach that was followed effectively Monday night. On Tuesday afternoon, members of the administration held conversations with CWRU SJP leaders that yielded promises that were promptly broken, and by Tuesday evening, they violated the fundamental agreement when they allowed—and continue to allow—non-CWRU individuals to stay at all hours.

As a result, on Thursday afternoon, I communicated that protesting in the oval was no longer permitted, and charges and/or sanctions will be invoked. Since Thursday, protesters have escalated their actions, including expanding the perimeter of the protest to block access to buildings and disrupting campus operations in multiple ways. Case Western Reserve University police continue their presence, providing protection for the protesters and the rest of our community.

I share this information to assure you that the university is committed to working with student leaders—but working together requires all parties to work in good faith. As I noted in my email Thursday, we will not engage in discussion on the demands made until the encampment ends and protesters have completed any relevant conduct processes.

I hope this email provides more clarity on this evolving situation. Again, I want to thank the elected student leaders who met with me last weekend. Their constructive feedback, openness to discussion and advocacy for their peers are testaments to the strong leadership they display.

Catholic college defends pro-abortion nun as commencement speaker amid backlash

A Catholic university defended its appointment of a pro-choice "social justice" activist nun as the school's commencement speaker on Thursday amid backlash.

Sacred Heart University has invited Sister Simone Campbell to be their commencement speaker on May 11 in Fairfield, Connecticut. Campbell is an outspoken progressive Catholic who advocates for social justice causes. She served as an executive director for Lobby for Catholic Social Justice from 2004-2021.

"Sacred Heart University looks forward to welcoming Sister Simone Campbell, SSS, on Saturday and presenting her with an honorary degree," the university said in a statement to Fox News Digital .

FOR A LOUISIANA LAWMAKER, EXEMPTING INCEST AND RAPE FROM THE STATE'S ABORTION BAN IS PERSONAL

However, Sister Campbell’s invitation prompted backlash and calls for Sacred Heart University President Dr. John Petillo to rescind her invitation because of her support for abortion and other issues they believe are "condemned by the Catholic Church."

According to the Catholic Vote , the petition seeking to oust Sister Campbell as commencement speaker amassed over 11,000 signatures "in less than two days."

Student Action TFP, a project from the American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property, is pushing the petition to have Campbell disinvited as the commencement speaker.

"I prayerfully urge you to dis-invite Sister Simone Campbell, S.S.S, as a commencement speaker. She supports abortion, women priests, Marxist Liberation Theology, and pro-homosexuality ‘pride’ – all things condemned by the Catholic Church, " the petition reads.

The petition cites a speech by Sister Campbell delivered at the 2017 Women’s March, an event that was co-sponsored by Planned Parenthood. Another instance the petition cited was an interview with Democracy Now!

"I don’t think it’s a good policy to outlaw abortion," she said. "The thing that we need to face is that women choose abortion often or most often because they don’t have economic options. And I think the shock of our nation is some claim to be pro-life but they’re really pro-birth. They don’t do what’s necessary to support women in carrying a baby to term and providing paid family leave."

She went on to say, "If we were really serious about being pro-life, we wouldn’t look just at birth. From my perspective, I don’t think its a good policy to outlaw abortion, I think rather let’s focus on economic development for women and economic opportunity. That’s what really makes the change."

SHU officials told Fox News Digital that they "choose to honor Sister Simone for her commitment to the social teachings of the Catholic Church ."

"She represents inclusiveness, respect and dignity to all people, and embraces social justice, which are cornerstones of the University’s mission," the statement reads. "Sister Simone is steadfast in pursuing the gospel message of caring and love which is reflective of the University’s core values. She also will receive another honorary degree from a prominent Catholic University next week and received the Medal of Freedom—the nation’s highest civilian award—from President Joe Biden."
