The Top 30 Global Sustainability Research Papers in 2019

In 2019, record-high global temperatures and climate change took central stage in global news headlines, culminating with a declaration from more than 11,000 scientists from around the world that a climate emergency exists on Earth. This declaration got people talking on social media and in the news, more so than any other scientific publication in 2019.

Altmetric annually ranks the 100 scientific papers that glean the most media attention as a simple measure of what sparks public interest. In 2019, they examined over 62 million media mentions of 2.7 million research articles. The altmetric score does not measure the calibre of the research or researcher.

At Future Earth, we used the list to identify the top 30 global sustainability articles. We were guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which recognize that eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions, combating inequality within and among countries, preserving the planet, creating sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, and fostering social inclusion are linked to each other and are interdependent.

Taking a closer look at the top five, the rising threat posed by climate change (SDG 13) was a central concern in 2019 as reflected by this year’s top two papers. The health of our oceans (SDG 14) and global terrestrial biodiversity (SDG 15) also find their way into the top five, with the third ranked paper discussing increasing vulnerability to sea level rise and coastal flooding, while the fourth ranked paper examines the potential of global reforestation to mitigate the effects of climate change. Rounding out the top five, a global study between 1990-2017 analyzed the health effects linked to dietary risks (SDG 3). Together, these papers reflect the many connections among natural and human systems by highlighting just how important the life supporting SDGs (6, 13, 14, and 15) are to supporting healthy, equitable, and sustainable livelihoods on Earth.

Of the top 30, nearly half of the global sustainability articles are concerned with climate change, with another third related to health, nutrition, and climate. Papers discussing biodiversity and plastics also make their way onto the list.

What are the top sustainability trends for 2024?

Disclosure, accountability, nature and climate adaptation are all high on the business agenda for the coming 12 months

The sustainability landscape is changing rapidly, driven by an unprecedented convergence of global environmental and political crises and regulatory shifts. This year is poised to be a watershed, following the first-of-its-kind agreement at COP28 to move away from using fossil fuels for energy. The Sustainability Project spoke to experts to shortlist trends that will shape sustainability in 2024.

Full disclosure

Climate disclosure is top of the list for commentators, and with the new year new sustainability standards have come into effect from supervisors and standard-setters. Key ones are the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) , the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) and those upcoming from the US Securities and Exchange Commission. 

According to Peter Bakker, president of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), European businesses are mostly focused on disclosing under the CSRD. However, he worries there is too great an emphasis on compliance with the directive. Businesses must ensure that they do not report for the sake of it, but use reporting to aid better decision-making and bring about actual change, he adds. 

Mr Bakker believes companies should be rewarded for progress, not just for reporting. Aligning changing business needs with capital-allocation models used by the financial markets will boost the speed of the transition, which is currently nowhere near sufficient, he says. 

Mark Lee, partner and director at ERM, a sustainability consultancy, agrees that there needs to be more focus on accountability and change, rather than just reporting. “We’ve got much better at broadcasting what we’re doing, but without changing much—emissions continue to rise, deforestation is accelerating,” he says. Mr Lee predicts that pressure on businesses will shift from data provision to delivery. 

For Tom Beagent, a partner in PwC’s sustainability business, disclosure requirements will lead to a greater focus on quality. As an example, he cites corporate climate transition plans—time-bound action plans outlining how an organisation will align assets, operations and business models with the latest climate science . Scrutiny by the CDP last year found that, though many corporations had net-zero plans, only 7% had a credible strategy to achieve them.

“It’s no longer good enough to just have a net-zero commitment, there’s a need to give confidence that you know how to achieve it,” he says. 

Similarly, business thinking on carbon offsets will shift from quantity to quality, following what Mr Beagent calls the “annus horribilis” for the market in 2023, which saw sustained scrutiny by the media and campaigners.

Nature edges forward

Alongside climate reporting, disclosures on business impacts on nature and vice versa have climbed up the corporate agenda. Last September the Task Force for Nature-Related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) released its final recommendations to enable companies to assess, disclose and manage nature-related risks and impacts, so that data from companies will be comparable. 

However, though nature is increasingly a focus for business sustainability teams, especially in the lead-up to UN nature talks at COP16 in Colombia in October, commentators predict that it will continue to play second fiddle to climate. 

Mr Lee believes that while the agenda on corporate disclosure has accelerated and been formalised in recent years, it will now temporarily plateau. 

He gives the example of a client that needs to almost double the number of data points it reports on in just one year. In addition, these have to be assured in a way that was not previously required, necessitating sign-off by legal teams and the chief financial officer. 

“People want to embrace nature-related work, and they see their investments in nature as essential to moving forward on climate. But the current regulatory wave is going to necessarily put pause on the voluntary edges of disclosure, and other sustainability work,” Mr Lee says. 

Mr Bakker of the WBCSD says that though many companies agree with the idea of becoming “nature positive”, many struggle to know what that means in practice. There will be a lot of work to better understand this in 2024, he predicts. “Not every business has the same impacts on nature. What are pathways to nature-positive? How do you measure materiality?” he says.

Adaptation steps up

The year 2023 concluded with a stark warning from climate scientists : it was the hottest year ever recorded, capping off the warmest decade (2011-20) in history. The rate of climate change is accelerating at an alarming pace.

Against this backdrop, and following reports by UN scientists that current global efforts are insufficient to meet the international goal of limiting warming to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels, Mr Beagent anticipates that corporations will intensify their efforts in climate adaptation. 

“The early years of climate disclosure under the TCFD, and the analysis that sits beneath it, will highlight where the challenges are and what action is needed. Climate impacts are coming through faster than expected, so there’s more management focus on what needs to be done to adapt,” he says.

Increasing resilience in supply chains is coming to the fore as companies understand better how different warming scenarios will affect their business, Mr Beagent adds. 

According to Mr Lee of ERM, businesses are becoming much more aware of the physical risks associated with climate change, especially in relation to flood protection and maintaining access to water for supply chains. 

“We’re doing a huge amount of work on physical risk across our client base, some of which is being enabled by what we can literally see using satellite and geospatial data to assess in advance where assets such as a transmission line might go. We’re seeing a real uptick in demand for that kind of pre-analysis to give people greater confidence about infrastructure investments,” he says. 

According to Mr Beagent, businesses are starting 2024 with a significant amount of work in all areas of sustainability, and many will need to build up capacity and skills to deal with them. “None of this is going to be easy, but then we're talking about some quite significant challenges that need to be overcome. We’re seeing these regulations come through because there hasn’t been enough action,” he cautions.

Students Accelerate Data-Driven Climate Research through Climate+

More than 30 students participated on eight project teams in summer 2024.

This summer, students in Duke University’s Climate+ program used data science techniques to research climate challenges and potential solutions. They studied topics like saltwater intrusion, energy materials, rainfall predictions and links between climate and health.

Summer 2025 Proposals Due November 4

Duke faculty are invited to submit proposals for Climate+ projects to take place in summer 2025.

Climate+ offers students opportunities to take part in small research teams as a part of Duke’s 10-week Data+ summer experience. Teams of two to four undergraduate students work with a graduate student project manager and faculty leads to collect, analyze and/or visualize data to contribute to climate research. Students, who are pursuing degrees across a range of disciplines, learn to apply data science techniques like machine learning and geospatial data analysis as they undertake projects.

For summer 2024, Climate+ teams included:

  • Environmental and Climate Exposures and Social Determinants of Health
  • Data- and Machine Learning–Driven Analysis of Atomic Dynamics in Energy Materials
  • Detecting Saltwater Intrusion in Rivers Using Remote Sensing
  • Monitoring Spartina alterniflora Using Self-supervised Learning
  • Duke Forest Reptile and Amphibian Data
  • Energy Transition During Energy Crisis: Cape Town's Experience
  • Improving Future Rainfall Predictions in the Southeastern US
  • Making Climate Hazard Risk Data Useful for North Carolina Communities

Findings from this summer’s teams are already informing climate solutions. One group organized and analyzed reptile and amphibian observations in Duke Forest, providing insights that are helping forest managers monitor and protect species.

Another Climate+ team worked closely with the town of Creswell, NC , and the North Carolina Office of Recovery and Resilience to measure flood risks, developing different damage scenarios to help the town and its residents prepare for flooding impacts.

“When the students went to do on-the-ground data collection in Creswell, they got to know town leaders and some of the people who are facing flood risks,” said Robert Calderbank, director of the Rhodes Information Initiative at Duke. “People in the community were eager to partner with students around this challenge, which becomes more urgent with every heavy rain event.”

Enthusiastic about the progress of the partnership, Creswell community leaders will soon be meeting with Duke and NCORR to discuss next steps. A Bass Connections team will build on the partnership’s efforts during the 2024-2025 school year.

Since the summer 2022 launch of Climate+, more than 90 students have contributed to 21 interdisciplinary project teams spanning ecology, biology, engineering, environmental science and more.

Like all students in the broader Data+ program, Climate+ students have opportunities to learn from visiting data science professionals across numerous industries and from other student teams’ experiences and insights.

In addition, Climate+ students participate in a series of unique workshops to enhance their climate literacy, data science and interdisciplinary communication skills. Guest speakers at this year’s workshops covered topics like machine learning, data visualization, climate change science, sustainable agriculture and climate hazard risks and decision-making.

"Climate+ provides students interested in data science with opportunities to learn how these tools can help us address the causes and consequences of climate change. Over the summer, students can make meaningful progress toward climate solutions,” said Kyle Bradbury, director of the Energy Data Analytics Lab at the Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability.

Climate+ is offered by the Nicholas Institute in partnership with the Rhodes Information Initiative at Duke. The program is aligned with the Duke Climate Commitment , a university-wide initiative that unites Duke’s education, research, operations and public service missions to address climate challenges. Funding for Climate+ comes from The Duke Endowment and the Rhodes Information Initiative.

Understanding social and cultural resilience involves exploring how these communities engage in participatory planning, preserve their heritage, and leverage social networks for support. By examining these dynamics, researchers can identify strategies to enhance resilience, ensuring that tourism contributes positively to the community's cultural and social sustainability. The goal of this Research Topic is to address the multifaceted challenges that tourism communities face in maintaining and enhancing their social and cultural resilience. This issue intends to bring together a collection of studies that will explore the cases from various world regions. Submissions from the Global South will be particularly welcome, as these regions often experience the most intense pressures from tourism development and crises, yet also offer rich insights into resilient practices and innovative solutions. These cases will examine, amongst others, various participatory approaches to tourism planning that involve local communities in the decision-making processes; strategies for preserving cultural heritage rather than those that undermine local traditions and customs; mechanisms that help strengthen social networks and support systems within tourism communities as robust social bonds are crucial for resilience. Insights from the collection of these cases in the special issue will help us develop and suggest coping mechanisms and resilience-building strategies that can help communities recover from disruptions. By understanding these dynamics, we can also develop effective policies and practices that enhance the well-being and stability of tourism communities, ensuring sustainable and resilient tourism development. Furthermore, the comprehensive special issue will help gain valuable insights and propose actionable strategies for fostering social and cultural resilience in tourism-dependent regions from across the world. This Research Topic aims to explore the social and cultural resilience of tourism communities, emphasizing the need to sustain and enhance their unique characteristics amidst various challenges. We would invite submissions that address the following themes: 1. Community Engagement: Strategies and outcomes of involving local communities in tourism planning and decision-making processes. 2. Cultural Heritage Management: Effective practices for preserving and promoting local culture without leading to commodification. 3. Social Networks and Support Systems: Analysis of the role of social bonds and community support in enhancing resilience. 4. Coping and Adaptation: Innovative ways in which communities respond to tourism-related disruptions and crises. 5. Sustainability Practices: Sustainable tourism models that align with local priorities and enhance social cohesion. We would welcome original research articles, case studies, review articles, and perspective pieces that offer new insights or comprehensive overviews. Contributions should focus on empirical data, theoretical frameworks, or detailed case studies that contribute to the broader understanding of resilience in tourism communities.

A world in balance 2024: Accelerating sustainability amidst geopolitical challenges

Report from the capgemini research institute, organizations worldwide are making significant strides in environmental and social sustainability..

To understand the progress being made, the Capgemini Research Institute conducted an extensive survey involving 2,152 executives from 727 organizations with annual revenues exceeding $1 billion across 13 countries worldwide. They also surveyed 6,500 consumers from the same 13 countries to gain a comprehensive view of sustainability from both organizational and consumer perspectives.

The results of this survey have been collected in the third edition of our A world in balance series. By comparing this data with previous years’ surveys , we examine the progress organizations have made in environmental and social sustainability over the past three years and identify the challenges they face.

A world in balance 2024: Accelerating sustainability amidst geopolitical challenges highlights the strides made in areas such as circularity, sustainable design, measurement and data sharing, water stewardship, biodiversity, social sustainability, and sustainability education and training. Despite these advancements, challenges remain, particularly in addressing Scope 3 emissions and effectively engaging consumers.

The report has found that regulations have driven sustainability efforts and accelerated measurement and tracking capabilities. However, many organizations are still unprepared for upcoming directives like the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).

Executives recognize the importance of climate tech, including low-carbon hydrogen, industrial carbon capture, and electrification, in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving other sustainability goals. Two-thirds of executives agree that data and digital technologies are accelerators for climate tech adoption. Although high costs, skills shortages, and regulatory uncertainties pose challenges.

Association of research libraries, sustainable libraries initiative partner to give arl members access to sustainability resources and tools.

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) is partnering with the Sustainable Libraries Initiative (SLI) to enable all ARL member institutions to become members of the SLI for 12 months and receive a discounted rate for joining the Sustainable Library Certification Program (SLCP). This partnership is in effect through December 31, 2025, and may be renewed.

The Sustainable Libraries Initiative provides library leaders with a proven path forward to co-create libraries and communities that will thrive in the coming years. The Sustainable Library Certification Program and the SLI community of practice enables libraries, and ultimately their communities, to become more environmentally sound, socially equitable, and economically feasible.

“We are excited for this opportunity to partner with ARL and more deeply connect with the research library community,” said Rebekkah Smith Aldrich, co-founder and president of the Sustainable Libraries Initiative.

“ARL’s commitment to advance an equitable, enduring, research environment dovetails wonderfully with the SLI’s mission to empower library leaders to intentionally address climate change through their work and co-create thriving communities,” said ARL President Trevor A. Additionally, SLI is giving ARL members a 20% discount on certification through the Sustainable Library Certification Program for any individual ARL member and a 25% discount for cohorts of five or more libraries.

Look for more information about the SLI and the SLCP in ARL communication channels in coming weeks, including two kickoff webinars to introduce the SLI and the SLCP respectively. ARL member representatives will have the opportunity to meet SLI leadership at an upcoming Association Meeting.

Frieze and Art Basel Among 40 Art Fairs Uniting for Groundbreaking Green Initiative

Can art fairs cut their emissions in half by 2030? Leading events have committed to try.

When it comes to the matter of sustainability in the art world, the real elephant in the room is art fairs. Any gallery committed to slashing its carbon footprint will be limited in what it can achieve if its a frequent exhibitor because, even though these events only amount to a few weeks of the year, they can easily make up about one third of a gallery’s overall emissions, according to the Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC).

This finding is of little surprise. After all, art fairs call for a major upheaval of personnel and stock, sometimes to an entirely new continent. The toll of air freight, air travel, plus all manner of single-use materials needed to design a standout booth adds up. And when most galleries rely on international fairs to grow their reach, who can be expected to take a solitary stand and withdraw from these competitive opportunities?

Understanding the pressures on individual art businesses, especially during the current market downturn, the GCC has long encouraged collaboration across the sector. So why not tackle the environmental impact of art fairs at the source?

Today, the GCC launched a new alliance of 13 organizations representing over 40 major art fairs, including Frieze, Art Basel, TEFAF, ARCO, The Armory Show, Untitled Art, and Liste Art Fair Basel. Each has pledged to adhere to the Art Fair Co-Commitment Statement, which aims to reduce emissions by at least 50 percent by 2030. Participants will following best practice guidelines, measure and report on their progress, and pool resources and knowledge.

“Leading art fairs have recognized that there is no more business as usual,” said the GCC’s director Heath Lowndes. “For the art sector, that has meant facing up to some hard truths about how it operates and starting to adapt practices accordingly.”

He added that the collaborative approach in making this groundbreaking statement, as well as the work that has gone into creating the shared resource, is “a testament to the potential for collective action to lead to systematic changes.”

Additionally, the Art Fair Toolkit for Environmental Responsibility is a resource based on internal research and real life case studies that provides initial strategies and practical steps tailored to art fairs.

This summer, the GGC’s co-founder Victoria Siddall, who has long been at the forefront of a push for environmental change within the industry, spoke to Artnet News about the practical difficulties that come with affecting meaningful change in a complex industry like the art market.

Take for example, the question of whether galleries could swap from air to sea freight when shipping artworks to an overseas destination, potentially cutting emissions by some 90 percent. Why might they be hesitant?

“Is it around insurance?,” she speculated. “In which case can we help to solve that problem? Is it around the safety of work? Is it around the time it takes? Is it around artist deadlines? And then how do we bring the artists on board with that? We want to know how we make these things possible.”

GCC was founded in 2020 as an international membership organization providing environmental sustainability guidelines for the visual arts sector. It now has over 1,100 members in 40 countries worldwide who have all committed to a 50 percent reduction in emissions by 2030 in line with the United Nations Paris Agreement. Earlier this month, the group also launched an open-access resource, the GCC Artist Toolkit, which has been designed to support artists who want to be more environmentally conscious in their practice.

Despite its success, the coalition was forced to end its International Volunteer Chapter (IVC) program two weeks ago, citing a lack of funding. The IVC initiative—which launched in 2020 in Berlin and grew to include seven chapters of self-organized volunteers in Italy, Spain, Taiwan, London, Los Angeles, and New York— represented one of the largest networks of arts professionals working to build sustainability initiatives for the trade.

“Over the past year, we have increased engagement with our volunteer groups to understand their challenges and needs,” Lowndes wrote in a letter published on GCC’s website on September 12. “The overwhelming feedback indicated that the chapters require significant financial investments to a higher degree than GCC can provide.” The coalition relies on grants and donations and does not receive governmental funds.
