The experiential meaning-making in narrative can be studied by applying the Ideational Metafunction theoretical framework as introduced by Halliday. According to Halliday, the meaning-making can be realized by means of three Transitivity main elements found in clauses which are process, participants and circumstances. A study was conducted on three Malay short stories entitled ‘Catatan di Meja Makan’, ‘Anita’ and ‘Meneruskan Perjalanan’ by Zurinah Hassan to analyse the experiential meaning-making of narrative using Transitivity analysis from Systemic Functional Linguistics as the analytical framework. The findings of the Transitivity analysis on Malay short stories show that material process types are mostly found and followed by mental processes. This results in the most found participants are actors for material process types, whilst participants for mental processes are sensors. The findings also show that the participants for material processes can be living or non-living entities. The writer usually conveys the meaning of short stories in active forms, by which means active processes are used to illustrate the actions of participants in Malay short stories. The findings of this study are a contribution to the field of Malay language studies using the theoretical framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics, of which studies on Malay language using this theory are still lacking.

Narratives in Malaysian Art
Four-volume publication, comprising texts, essays, and interviews on the development of visual art in Malaysia. Published by RogueArt
Malaysian art is a rich and diverse field with a compelling history and a promising future. The creative visions of Malaysian artists offer insights into many discourses - from stories in Malaysian art and its development, to pre- and post-Merdeka national narratives, as well as current social, political and cultural developments in the context of a globalised world.
However, the documentation and discussion of this vital aspect of our culture is still under-developed with only a limited bibliography available for interested arts, academic and general audiences. Narratives in Malaysian Art addresses this imbalance through a body of collected and commissioned writings in a four-volume in Bahasa Malaysia and English (in separate editions). It is a project by Malaysian art writers to begin a larger exploration of Malaysia’s artistic heritage for today’s generation and for generations to come.
- also interesting in UiU -
Objectives:
- To invigorate the debates and discourses around Malaysian art history
- To create a valuable resource for students, artists, curators, writers and members of the general public
- To support a tradition of critical writing in Malaysia by providing a platform for both established and emerging authors
Narratives in Malaysian Art has selected as its starting point the pre-Merdeka (pre-Independence) period and will cover artistic practice and production, and their contexts up to today. It seeks to address the development of diverse visual art practices, movements and discourses, and their relationship to the Malaysian historical context, as well as to other cultural disciplines and phenomena.
We do not claim to be a definitive history of Malaysian art, but a weaving together of its stories, issues, and context from many different viewpoints.
The structure of the 4-volume publication is based on large themes and areas of interest, with Volumes I & II covering art production, practices and history, Volume III addressing the role and nature of Malaysian art world infrastructure, and Volume IV looking at a range of viewpoints on key issues in the context of reading and interpreting art in Malaysia. The first volume, "Imagining Identities", was launched on 7 July 2012 at the National Visual Arts Gallery, Kuala Lumpur.
Narratives in Malaysian Art is published by RogueArt, and made possible through the support of generous corporate sponsors, individuals and friends of the project. Profits from sales of the books are channeled back into the project.
Volume I: IMAGINING IDENTITIES Editors: Nur Hanim Khairuddin, Beverly Yong, with T.K. Sabapathy Published in July 2012 380pp (Eng), 420 pp (BM), with 140 illustrations This first volume, launched in July, examines the intellectual, philosophical and thematic preoccupations that have shaped art practices in Malaysia since their beginnings. It looks at how Malaysian artists have attempted to make sense of an enduring albeit always evolving Malaysian subject matter, content and meaning. This volume is divided into two parts:
The Journey Between the Pastoral and the Urban, and the Building of a Nation begins by addressing early developments in Malaysian art against the backdrop of the lead up to Merdeka as well as the forging of a national identity. It looks at developments in artistic production in parallel with the influence of socio-historical events like urbanization, cultural difference and racial relations always against the backdrop of the evolving landscape of a rich and bountiful land, nationhood and national pride . Claiming/Reclaiming National Identity in Malaysian Art looks at Malaysian art’s preoccupations and experiences with the concept of identity and how it constitutes a site of struggle between competing artistic practices, narratives and discourses.
Essays by Anurendra Jegadeva, Beverly Yong & Adeline Ooi, Chai Chang Hwang, Emelia Ong, Izmer Ahmad, Kelvin Chua, Laura Fan, Ooi Kok Chuen, Rahimidin Zahari, Redza Piyadasa, Safrizal Shahir, Siti Zainon Ismail, Sulaiman Esa, Syed Ahmad Jamal, TK Sabapathy, Tengku Sabri Ibrahim, Yee I-Lann, Zakaria Ali, Zainol Shariff.
Volume II: REACTIONS – NEW CRITICAL STRATEGIES Editors: Nur Hanim Khairuddin, Beverly Yong, with T.K. Sabapathy Publication date: Early 2013 The aim of this second volume is to accumulate and highlight key information pertaining to the response of artists towards social, political, cultural and artistic contexts. It examines the development of new artistic strategies from the late 60s to today, taking into consideration changes in the socio-political context, technological development and the emergence of new methodologies in art practice and thinking.
Seminal moments such as the Mystical Reality exposition and manifesto, new media exploration by Ismail Zain, conceptual practices by the New Scene, and multi-disciplinary tendencies among the Anak Alam collective, will be covered and given fresh perspectives, joined by new documentation and discussion of more recent key events. The volume will explore the development of approaches to various media such as photography, performance and conceptual art, and the use of electronic and new media technology, as well as how artists have chosen to negotiate space, and engaged with other cultural disciplines.
Volume III: INFRASTRUCTURES Publication date: 2013 This volume will look at the development of the Malaysian art scene - its history, current situation and future prospects. It will examine the history and role of art education, art institutions, and the art market through overviews as well as interviews with key figures. This survey will also encompass art publishing, art programming by international agencies, corporate support and private patronage, art residencies, competitions and prizes, which have all played an important part in encouraging artists and audiences. Importantly, the volume address the ways in which artists have been perceived in Malaysian society, and how they have sought to make themselves heard, supported each other, and shaped their environment through the creation of societies, collectives, alternative spaces and even foundations.
Volume IV: PERSPECTIVES Publication date: 2013 This volume presents diverse viewpoints on key issues in reading and discussing contemporary art in the Malaysian context. Specially commissioned essays will look at under-researched areas such as art historical and critical methodologies, gender, art and technology, and engagement with communities, while there will also be surveys and interviews with local art world figures as well as specialist essays addressing more familiar central topics such as post-colonialism and ethnicity and identity. In this way, Volume IV: Perspectives hopes to stimulate further discussion, which may in turn expand into a more sustained sense of discourse in Malaysian art.

The Qur'an had various styles and modes in making up God's word, one of which was the narrative one. There were many narrative verses in the Qur'an-including verses telling stories of His prophets-to which most of Muslim scholars unfortunately did not devote their attention. A.H. Johns, a professor of ANU, was one of a few scholars who focused his study on narrative criticism that was actually one of branches of literary criticism. Unlike historical criticism which tended to investigate the origins of a text and what lied behind it, literary criticism gave much attention to interpretive acts of a text itself. Using this method of interpretation, and relying on his belief that the Qur'an must be understood as a both a process and an event, Johns explored possible meanings the verses imply by making connection between the verse under discussion and other verses in the same pericope and in the whole Sura. Through this method of interpretation, Johns succeeded in discovering many novel meanings of narrative verses of the Qur'an not found out by using any other method. This work wanted to elaborate much on Johns' study and showed some fortune and possibilities in using this method in understanding the meaning of the Qur'an, especially of its narrative verses.

"It's like learning another language - it's not because it's difficult, but it's up to whether or not the person wants to learn it."
SPM result statistics from 2017 reveal that around 8 to 9 per cent of SPM candidates fail the Malay paper every year, despite the fact that Malay has been established as the main medium of communication in schools. Is Bahasa Melayu at the SPM level too challenging for students, or are there still members of our country's young community who do not know how to speak Malay?
Shahril Sufian Hamdan, Malaysia's newly-appointed economic director, believes that it is solely up to the determination of the individual to learn our national language, that will decide how well the person performs in Bahasa Melayu . We at Superprof agree that with the right mindset, you can flourish in your SPM Malay papers - even in Penulisan Bahasa Melayu !
What are the writing skills being assessed in SPM Malay ? Don't wait to check your status on SAPS and start with the SPM Malay papers you need to succeed .
SPM Malaysia essay writing in Bahasa Melayu
In the Format Bahasa Melayu SPM Terkini , Kertas 1 (1103/1) has been maintained as the essay writing paper for Form 5 students. The writing skills of students are tested in two sections: Bahagian A , in the form of a limited-response subjective question, and Bahagian B , which consists of four open-response subjective questions.
It is compulsory for students to answer the question in Bahagian A , which contributes up to 30 marks towards the overall score of the paper. Don't be surprised at how much information goes into this first section, though - students are presented with 2 to 3 related pieces of information that they will have to write about. These pieces of information may be in the form of pictures , posters, excerpts and even newspaper clippings.
Bahagian B , on the other hand, will only require students to choose 1 out of the 4 questions in the section. The questions represent different domains to write about, including public, personal, education, and career domains. When selecting a domain or question to construct your essay, be sure to read both the short paragraph and the question below it. Bahagian B carries a heavier weightage as it carries up to 70 marks in the paper's final score.
Unlike the English essay SPM paper, in which students have to answer a total of 3 questions, notice that you'll only have to answer 2 questions . As you are allocated 2 hours to answer Bahasa Melayu Kertas 1 , ensure that you write a lengthier essay in Bahagian B since Bahagian A only requires students to write their essay within 150 to 200 words .
What about the complete format of the SPM Malay papers for 2021 ?
Bahasa Melayu Kertas 1 example for SPM 2022
Let's break down Bahasa Melayu Kertas 1 , shall we? To illustrate, here is an excerpt from an actual example (Contoh 2) of Bahagian A in the Buku Format Pentaksiran Bahasa Melayu SPM 2021 :
" Gambar dan maklumat di bawah menunjukkan masalah kutipan sampah yang dihadapi oleh penduduk di kawasan tempat tinggal and. Sebagai seorang penduduk yang prihatin, tulis sepucuk surat kepada pihak berkuasa tempatan untuk mengadukan masalah... cadangkan tindakan yang perlu diambil. "
In the question, students have to observe and analyse three pieces of information: a picture of rubbish left uncollected, a schedule indicating garbage collection and community clean-up times, and a newspaper clipping with the headline, "The Rubbish Problem Is Not Over". Therefore, to write a formal letter to the local authorities, it is vital for students to include these bits of information in their writing aside from suggesting actions that can be taken.
Curious to know about Bahagian B ? The example below, taken from the Buku Format Pentaksiran Bahasa Melayu SPM 2021 , asks students to describe efforts that should be made towards encouraging the younger generation's involvement in agricultural sectors:
When describing efforts to attract the younger generation to pick up agriculture in your writing, remember to include the news information from the question, which indicates how Malaysia's rich natural resources make the country suitable for agriculture. Accordingly, students must mention in their writing that younger generations are lacking interest in agriculture, only then can they proceed with suggesting ways to motivate young people to take part in the sector.

How to score A in SPM result for Malay essay writing
When it comes to essay writing in Bahasa Melayu , one may have the ideas - but what is the best way to work on and expand on these ideas? The real challenge could perhaps be that students do not master a basic way or skill in writing Malay essays. Thus, to effectively write an essay, students need to be taught the steps or techniques of writing each paragraph. Do you know how examiners mark your SPM Bahasa Melayu papers according to the SPM timetable ?
Of course, let's begin with understanding the requirements of the question. What is its central idea ? This refers to the theme or issue that needs to be discussed, ensuring students are writing about the right content and staying on track. With that being said, let's take a look at how to build the paragraphs for the introduction, body and closing of your Bahasa Melayu essay:
Introduction ( Perenggan Pengenalan )
Your first paragraph introduces the title of your essay to the reader - making it interesting keeps your reader looking forward to the next paragraph. The introduction can be built with 3 to 5 sentences . Start with an introductory statement to provide a general understanding of the title, followed by two to three descriptive verses to support your first statement. End your introduction with a focal sentence to give purpose to your essay.
Body ( Perenggan Isi )
The number of paragraphs for the body depends on the number of main points for your essay. Keep it at one main point per paragraph to make your essay neat and easy for the reader to identify the main points and other content. Furthermore, arrange the body paragraphs according to the importance of each main point - the most significant point should be placed first, followed by the rest.
Each body paragraph can be described in 4 to 5 sentences . It is best to start with a topic sentence to state your main point, although some students may prefer to place their topic sentence at the middle or end of the paragraph. For a smooth flow, however, it is recommended to put your topic sentence at the start of your body paragraph, followed by two to four side-content sentences and examples to support your topic sentence.
Closing ( Perenggan Penutup )
Your closing paragraph should provide an overall summary of the ideas in your preceding paragraphs. In 3 to 5 sentences , write your final paragraph using techniques such as restating your points, making predictions , or suggesting recommendations . Note that your closing statements shouldn't repeat what has already been written in the previous paragraphs.

What is a Narrative Essay — Examples, Format & Techniques
I was in the Amazon jungle the first time I wrote a narrative essay, enlightened and enraptured by the influence of ayahuasca. That’s not true. Narrative essays share a lot of similarities with personal essays, but whereas the former can be fictional or non-fictional, the latter are strictly non-fictional. The goal of the narrative essay is to use established storytelling techniques, like theme , conflict , and irony , in a uniquely personal way.
The responsibility of the narrative essayist is to make the reader feel connected to their story, regardless of the topic. This next video explores how writers can use structural elements and techniques to better engage their readers.

How to start a narrative essay.
When you go to sleep at night, what do you think of? Flying squirrels? Lost loved ones? That time you called your teacher ‘mom’? Whatever it is, that’s what you need to write about. There’s a reason those ideas and moments have stuck with you over time. Your job is to figure out why.
Once you realize what makes a moment important to you, it’s your job to make it important to the reader too. In this next video, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker J. Christian Jensen explains the power of the personal narrative.

Anything and everything can be the topic of your essay. It could be as benign as a walk to school or as grandiose as a trip to the moon — so long as that narrative exists within reality. Give your thoughts and opinions on the matter too — don’t be afraid to say “this is what I think” so long as it’s supported by storytelling techniques. Remember, never limit yourself as a writer, just keep in mind that certain topics will be harder to make engaging than others.
Narrative Essay Outline
How to write a narrative essay.
First step, game plan. You’re going to want to map out the story from beginning to end, then mark major story beats in your document.
Like all stories, your narrative essay needs a clear beginning, middle, and end. Each section should generally conform to a specifically outlined structure. For reference, check out the outline below.

Make sure to reference back to this outline throughout the writing process to make sure you have all your major beats covered.
Purpose of narrative essay writing
Narrative essays give writers the ability to freely express themselves within the structure of a traditional story. Nearly all universities ask applicants to submit a narrative essay with their formal application. This is done for two reasons: they allow institutions to judge the linguistic and grammar capabilities of its applicants, as well as their raw creative side.
If you’re considering studying creative writing in an undergraduate or graduate program, then you’re going to write A LOT of narrative style essays. This process may seem indomitable; How am I supposed to write hundreds of pages about… me? But by the end, you’ll be a better writer and you’ll have a better understanding of yourself.
One thing that all successful essayists have in common is that they make radical, often defiant statements on the world at large. Think Ralph Waldo Emerson, Virginia Woolf, and Langston Hughes for example.
Being a professional essayist isn’t easy, and it’s near-impossible to be one who makes a lot of money. Many essayists work as professors, editors, and curriculum designers as well.
This next video features the late, award-winning essayist Brian Doyle. He explains all the things you need to hear when thinking about writing a story.
Narrative Essay Examples “Lecture” via Boston University
We can learn a lot from the way Doyle “opens” his stories. My favorite is how he begins with the statement, “I met the Dalai Lama once.” How can we not be interested in learning more?
This brings us all the way back to the beginning. Start with a hook, rattle off the line, then reel in the sinker. If you entice the reader, develop a personal plot, and finish with a resolute ending, you’ll have a lot of success in essay writing.

Narrative Essay
Definition of narrative essay.
A narrative essay is a type of essay that has a single motif , or a central point, around which the whole narrative revolves. All incidents, happenings, and characters revolve around a single motif presented in the narrative. A narrative essay is similar to a simple five-paragraph essay, in that it has the same format. It is only different in that it is a narrative, having characters, incidents, and dialogues.
Difference Between a Narrative Essay and a Short Story
A narrative essay has a specific format, specific aspects to discover, and a specific motif. It revolves around that motif set by the writer prior to writing the essay. A short story , however, is different from a narrative essay in that it does not revolve around a pre-set motif, and that it does not have a specific format. Also, a short story always leaves readers at a critical juncture with the desire to discover more. In contrast , a narrative essay ends when the readers are fully satisfied. They do not wish to read anymore or do not want to discover anymore.
Elements of a Narrative Essay
A narrative essay has three required elements: character , theme , and dialogue :
Characters are an important part of a narrative essay. Even if the essay is autobiographical in nature, the person writing the essay is a character involving some other characters who act, behave, and do like all other characters presented in stories and novels .
Theme or Motif
A narrative essay revolves around a theme or a motif. This theme or motif is presented in its thesis statement, which breaks it down into three distinct pieces of evidence . These three distinct pieces of evidence are then further elaborated through characters in body paragraphs .
Dialogue is used to capture the conversation between characters. In a narrative essay, dialogue is the third important element, without which the characters lose their worth and liveliness.
How to Choose a Topic for Narrative Essay
There are four major steps to choosing the topic of a narrative essay:
- Choose a theme or thematic strand around which to weave a story.
- Outline the character, events, and happenings.
- Think about the conversation of the characters and place them in a setting and plot
- Synchronize the characters with the plot and the setting to see if they integrate with each other.
MLA and APA Formats in Narrative Essay
MLA and APA are used in all types of essays. However, APA is mostly used in social sciences, while MLA is used in humanities. Whereas the application of MLA in a narrative is concerned, it is used in the format, intext citation , and in the Works Cited page. The first page comprises the student’s name, class, tutor’s name, and date with the topic of the essay given after all of them. However, in APA, all this information appears on the cover page. Similarly, both MLA and APA differ in intext citation, with MLA having only the author’s name and page without any comma. In contrast, APA has the author’s name as well as page number with a comma and ‘p’ with a period before the number of the page, such as (Hardy, p. 45). Regarding the sources, MLA shows Works Cited page at the end, while APA shows Reference at the end.
Reflective Narrative Essay
As the name suggests, a reflection narrative is an essay that presents the reflections of a person who is writing that essay. He takes an incident from his life and gives it an organization on the pattern of an essay with a narrative having a beginning, middle, and an end. The essay may or may not have moral lessons, which does not make a lot of difference if the experiences carry the deeper meaning. What matters is that the writer reflects on his own life, taking out some significant moment to make it a storied essay or a narrative essay with a theme in it.
Examples of Narrative Essays in Literature
Example #1: new directions (by maya angelou).
“Annie, over six feet tall, big-boned, decided that she would not go to work as a domestic and leave her “precious babes” to anyone else’s care. There was no possibility of being hired at the town’s cotton gin or lumber mill, but maybe there was a way to make the two factories work for her. In her words, “I looked up the road I was going and back the way I come, and since I wasn’t satisfied, I decided to step off the road and cut me a new path.” She told herself that she wasn’t a fancy cook but that she could “mix groceries well enough to scare hungry away and keep from starving a man.”
This paragraph is an example from a narrative essay of Maya Angelou. She has described how a girl looks, and how she behaves. She has also written direct dialogues to show that it is a narrative.
Example #2: Saturday Evening Post (by Russell Baker)
“When I burst in that afternoon she was in conference with an executive of the Curtis Publishing Company. She introduced me. He bent low from the waist and shook my hand. Was it true as my mother had told him, he asked, that I longed for the opportunity to conquer the world of business? My Mother replied that I was blessed with a rare determination to make something of myself. ‘That’s right,’ I whispered. ‘But have you got the grit, the character, the never-say-quit spirit it takes to succeed in business?’ My Mother said I certainly did.”
In this piece from a narrative essay by Russell Baker of the famed Saturday Evening Post , the author has fully described the efforts of his mother by her dialogue. Both character and dialogue are very clear.
Example #3: Only Daughter (by Sandra Cisneros)
“Once several years ago, when I was just starting out my writing career, I was asked to write my own contributor’s note for an anthology I was part of, I wrote: ‘ I am the only daughter in a family of six sons. That explains everything.’ “Well, I’ve thought about that ever since, and yes, it explains a lot to me, but for the reader’s sake I should have written: ‘I am the only daughter in a Mexican family of six sons.’ Or even: ‘I am the only daughter of a Mexican father and a Mexican-American mother.’ Or: ‘I am the only daughter of a working-class family of nine.’ All of these had everything to do with who I am today.”
In this essay, the author has given a full description of a daughter – how she looks and how she behaves.
Function of Narrative Essay
A narrative essay describes people, presents their conversations, and narrates their experiences to teach lessons to readers. In fact, it is like a story, but different in that it is weaved around a motif. A motif is given before the incidents of the essay. Readers become aware of this single theme, central idea, or motif once they go through the essay. Its major aim is to provide information about life experiences and lessons learned from those experiences.
Synonyms of Narrative Essay
Some of the words closely related to the narrative essay are reflective account, chronicle, chronology , and historical narrative. However, these words cannot be interchangeably used to replace this title.
