Essays About Your Mom: Top 5 Examples and 5 Prompts

Some of the most important memories in our lives involve our mothers. If you need to write essays about your mom, our guide will help.

A mother is a female parent of a child. Mothers nurture their children throughout childhood and, for many, throughout adulthood as well. The desire to support and protect our children is never ending for many mothers.

Motherhood, however, is not always a genetic role. Many people foster or adopt children or find themselves acting in a parental role for someone else’s children. What matters is the effort you put into a motherly role; for most, the instincts are all there.

It can safely be said that a mom is one of the most significant role models one can have in life and one whose influence continues to inspire. I once read a statement that said, ‘one day, you will realize your Mom is the best friend you will ever have.’ That is certainly true for me, and I hope for many of you.

If you are writing essays about your mom, our essay examples should prove inspiring.

“My mother believes in me, in everything I do, and is always positive about it. Every decision, task, and every level that I concur, my mom is always there, believing in me that I will succeed. Graduating 5th grade and moving up to 6th grade was a big step, just like graduating 8th grade and moving up to 9th grade was. But my mother believed that I would still do well in school and would enjoy it a lot.”

Mckenzie writes about his mother as his greatest influence and inspiration. He reflects on how his mom always makes sure he is well and how she loves the family unconditionally. He also describes her selflessness, as she volunteers for those in need and raises money for charity. Her mother’s love, selflessness, and encouragement inspire Mckenzie to try his best in everything he does, and he is genuinely grateful for her.

“All I can say is thank you for being an amazing mother and all I want for you is to keep doing what makes you happy and brightens your day. Keep creating and going to the beach just to look at the ocean. Keep running, even if it’s not in marathons and don’t forget how awesome of a mother you are. Keep collecting seashells and spreading your positive energy everywhere you go. I love you, Mom.”

Wolf’s essay is addressed to her own mother and is composed of different notes and letters. According to Wolf, her mother is hardworking, optimistic, and devoted, and she recalls several moments they shared. The moments she describes are heartfelt and profound experiences that many can relate to.

“To this day, she wakes up every morning, marches into our living room, and talks with cancer patients on the phone, lending them her empathy and expertise. It’s amazing, and I wanted her to know I saw all that. I wanted her to know I knew she’s always been a badass. I wanted her to know she’s an inspiration to me, a dynamic, courageous, capable, remarkable person I admire and study every day.”

Moore discusses his mother’s life beyond her role in his life. He briefly tells her life story, then writes about her work for a colon cancer foundation. She spends most of her time consoling and caring for cancer patients; only now is Moore able to appreciate what she is doing. He is in awe at all that his mom has been able to accomplish besides being a great mother to him.

“She utilizes her wisdom by teaching me the ways of life. She rejoices as I apply her teachings in my life and she understands me. The abundance of knowledge my mother has supplied me with continuously fills my life with rare and beautiful treasures.”

She is always there for her daughter, giving her advice on how to handle difficult situations. Gonzales aspires to be just like her mother in everything she does, especially when raising her own children.

 5. Your Mom Doesn’t Hate You, She’s Just Trying to Help You by Carly Newberg

“I’m not a parent (yet). However, I hope that when I am, I can take what I’ve learned from the obstacles I’ve faced with my mom, to keep the generational progress moving forward. After all, that is one of the beautiful gifts we’re given on Earth; To learn from the mistakes of our loved ones, map out our route accordingly, do our best to get where we are going, and accept the detours along the way knowing those after us will use them to love harder and live wiser.”

In this essay, Newberg discusses a phenomenon we are all too familiar with: mothers arguing with us. She explains that despite their seemingly curtailing actions, mothers always want what is best for us and are even struggling with whether their decisions are correct. Newberg suggests that we should be understanding of our mothers and use these experiences as lessons for how to parent in the future.

Essays About Your Mom: The best memory of your mom

For your essay, reflect on an experience with your mom that you treasure. Perhaps it is a birthday celebration, a trip out of town, or simply a conversation you had. Describe the events that transpired, how they made you feel, and why you treasure them as you do. Also, consider if your perception of this event has changed. Perhaps it has taught you more than you first thought.

One of a mother’s primary roles is to teach her children essential skills and lessons to prepare them for the future. Think about one or more things your mom taught you, whether life skills, values, or otherwise. You can be as general or in-depth as you want regarding what you’ve learned from your mom, but be sure to explain it adequately.

For an interesting essay topic, write about a quality of your mom’s that you seek to emulate- her patience, kindness, or fortitude. Discuss why you have chosen it, how it is essential to who your mom is, and how you hope to use it in the future.

Essays About Your Mom: Your mom as a role model

Mothers are role models to everyone, not only their kids but also to others they interact with daily. In your essay, you can reflect on a time your mom did something truly admirable that cemented her position as your role model. As with the other essays, describe the events, what you learned, and why you chose this. You may also comment on how it has shaped you as a prospective or active parent. Discuss any aspects of parenthood you would like to emulate and those you would not!

This essay topic may seem simple, but one can learn much about a person from a simple biography and reflection. Give readers a general idea of what your mom does, her role in your life, and how she has made you who you are today; paint a picture of this fantastic woman and why she is so important. You can include something about her background and note how it has influenced her, making her the mom she is. Also, you may consider whether any of her inherited traits have been passed to you.

An Introduction to the Essay

The word Mother is a very pious word and whosoever is called by the name ‘Mother’ is a person who sacrifices and prioritizes her children over anything. Her whole Life revolves around the well-being of her child, their growth, their development, and their welfare. A Mother not just only gives birth to a child but she takes a Lifelong commitment to take care of her child.

The only unconditional love in the world is the mother's love. My mother is my inspiration, my superhero, my best friend, and my guiding light. My life would not have been beautiful without my mother. Through ups and downs and in every step of life, she holds my hand and supports and encourages me. No matter what happens, my mother is always there beside me- cheering me up and motivating me. All mothers in the world are great and so, we should not celebrate their contribution in our life on Mother's Day only, which is 10th May, but every day of the year and throughout their life. It is because no gesture of appreciation is ever enough when it comes to acknowledging our mother. Her selfless love and sacrifice are the precious of all gifts under the sun.

An Essay on Mothers

My Mother- The Multi-Tasker

Mothers play an important role in everyone’s Life since she acts as a Protector, a Friend, and Guide for Life. A Mother does everything selflessly for her child and without any condition. There the love of a Mother is known to be Unconditional.

The way she manages my family with utter dedication and devotion is inspiring. The relationship with my mother is something very hard to explain. I do not merely love her because she is my mother and we should respect our elders. I love her because she is my world and when I was not able to speak and communicate she took care of me, time and time again. The best part about my mother is that even though I have grown older she knows and understands my needs without me speaking a word. I learned kindness and love from her. She taught me no matter how bad a situation might get, only love can improve it in the most effective way. She has been the rock-solid pillar of my life and in every big moment of my life.

My Mother has constantly supported me throughout my entire Life, whenever I am in a danger or in a situation where I am stuck, she has always been there for me, protected me, and guided me. She has been my favorite teacher who has taught me about Life and the beauty of it. She is the essence of truthfulness, sincerity, and lots of love. The only person who holds our family together is my Mother. She cares for everyone in the house and for the ones in need outside the house as well. One of the most beautiful things that I learned from my mother is empathy. Be it strangers or animals, she treats everyone equally which makes her more amazing. Moreover, she taught me to not hurt anyone on purpose and help people whenever possible. Not only this but also she taught me to not differentiate among rich or poor, beautiful or ugly. She says that it is the heart of a person that makes them beautiful and rich and not temporary possessions.

My Mother is my constant source of encouragement, be it in Life or in school for studies. She has always inspired me to do other activities along with my studies. She has taught me to enjoy every aspect of Life and live Life to the fullest. She wants me to do those things in Life as well which she could not do or pursue. She is my backbone for everything. My mother has inspired me through her hard work and sacrifices. She taught me once never to get disheartened by failure and to keep challenging the failure with our honest effort. And one day, failure will pave the path to our success. The strength of facing hurdles and overcoming it is what I have learned from her.

Mothers have never-ending qualities even though they do not get much credit for their goodness and hard work. She binds everyone in the family and plays a very important part in everyone’s Life. Even when I do something wrong in Life, she scolds me but at the same time, she makes me understand and helps me to get out of the situation. She forgives me after every mistake but ensures that I’ve realized my mistake first. She is the most selfless human being I have ever encountered in my life till now.

My mother knows me in and out. Even if I am lying she catches me immediately and I start feeling guilty. We should never lie to our parents and especially, to our mother. They simply do not deserve it. Mothers spend a significant part of their lives making us capable of standing on our own feet. Sometimes, they have to sacrifice their own career and happiness for that. So a mother's trust should never be destroyed. And when it comes to my mother, I would not change a bit about her. She is the best chef, reading partner, and an independent working woman who can balance almost everything with utmost perfection. Even her imperfection makes me proud of her. Without my mother, I would never become a better human being. My Mother is my biggest strength and makes me, even more, stronger when I go through all my ups and downs in life. The best thing she possesses is her patience. The patience she has is difficult for anyone to have. She deals with every situation in the family, in my life, or even in her Life with so much patience because of the reason the family is bonded so strongly. It is the responsibility of every child to appreciate their Mothers and give them the love and respect that Mothers deserve.

Introduction

The most loved person in the world is a mother. “Mother” is a simple word with six letters but its meaning is so vast that you can’t even explain it in six pages also. A mother is not just a lady, she has many forms. Sometimes she can be our friend, sometimes our god, and sometimes a magician that knows what’s inside our mind without saying a word.

Role of Mother

Mother is another way that God gave us life here on Earth. Because of her, a child can see the world. No one cares about us and loves us as much as our mothers. She always forgets her own troubles and thinks about making us happy. From listening lullaby to tales to real-life experiences, our bond with our mother never changes. If you haven’t seen the god, see your mother. The only person who understands what her children feel and want is the mother. She does many tasks from day to night but never gets tired. She always wishes for the well-being and happiness of her children. However, she never expects anything in return.

A mother is supportive, responsible, caring and everything for her children. A child can leave his mother in bad times but a mother can bear any pain to save her children from bad times. She always supports us and helps us in fulfilling our dreams. If we are in trouble or have any worries, just resting in our mother’s lap gives us relaxation. Mother is the best thing that God ever made. We should respect her and make her happy as much as possible.

Long Essay on Mother (500 Words)

A mother is a woman who gives birth to children and takes care of them throughout their lives. The mother is an important part of a child’s development. No matter how old we get, our mother will always think of us as her little child. She worries about us all the time and shows us how to live. No one can be a mother’s replacement. Everyone who has a mother is blessed. We should always respect our mothers and do what we can to make them happy.

Unconditional Love of a Mother

A mother is a true example of what love and care look like. The sacrifice that a mother does for her children is top of the world. Her love for children never fades away, no matter how the children treat her. The mother is there for us when we are happy and when we are sad. When we are sick, she wakes up in the middle of the night and prays to God for us to get better. No one can deny that a mother can remain hungry but can do anything to feed her children. A mother is the only person who can forgive us for our mistakes and show us how to fix them.

Mother – The Living God

It is been said that as god cannot be present everywhere to look after everyone, so he made mothers. Mother is the form of god on this earth. She teaches us how to act and what the real meaning of life is. She loves us and takes care of us from the moment we were born into this world until the day we die. Just like a superhero has many powers, a big heart, and invisibility, our mothers have different powers that allow her to be our best friend, teacher, and mentor. Mothers know what their children need even before they can talk. She is a mixture of love, struggle, and courage that knows no bounds.

Importance of Mother

A mother is sometimes a medicine when we are sick, food when we are hungry, and comfort when we are in pain. She gives us life and is the reason why we are here. Mothers are the backbone of every family. They hold the family together and make it one strong unit. The values a mother teaches her children to stay with them for the rest of their lives. Moreover, what a mother teaches her child will affect the future of society. When we are happy, she is happy. She takes care of every chore around the house without ever complaining.

Today kids became so selfish that they don’t remember what their parents did for them. The sacrifice of the mother to make their children’s lives better is now easily neglected by them. Many older children do not respect or treat their mothers well. However, we can never ever repay our mother for giving us this priceless life, so we should help and love her as much as we can.

I hope the above provided essay on Mother will be helpful in understanding the role and importance of mothers in the world.

Extended Essay On Mother | 500 Words

Introduction.

The meaning of the word “Mother” is very vast in itself. A mother is a sea of emotions and love and an irreplaceable person in everyone’s life. Ultimately, a person’s personality is a reflection of her mother. She plays an important role in shaping the overall character of her child.

Mother’s love has no comparison at all. She is the only person who loves her child unconditionally and is always ready to do more. A mother sacrifices her days and nights for her children’s happiness and fulfilling their needs. She is always a true well-wisher and encourages their child to move forward in life.

Importance of mother

As earlier, it has been said, and actually, it is a fact that a mother is the most important person in everyone’s life. because only she can take care of the child completely. She remembers all the needs of their children be they small or big.

Our behaviour and personality are a result of our mother’s teachings. She helps us to develop good manners , habits, and behaviour towards others. Apart from all that, she makes us confident to face problems boldly. Being a mother is a lesson on how to take care of yourself and others. She is an inspiration for all.

Mother’s Unalloyed Love

There is no doubt that a mother’s love is very exceptional and hard to find anywhere else. This is unique because for a mother their child is a part of her not apart from her. This attachment is very sensitive as a mother can sense your situations and feelings from a long distance.

Additionally, her love is unalloyed. It means there is no mixture in her love. Those who have not experienced a mother’s affection are surely unfortunate. She loves their child with no expectations in return. A father is less possible to establish a connection like that. Eventually, a mother’s love is no match at all.

What I Learned from her

A mother is a treasure of knowledge. We can learn a lot of things from her—some from her words and some from observation. I learned from her how to face problems with a bold attitude and the art of showering love and care. She always taught me to respect our elders and also younger ones.

She helped me shape my thought process and analytical ability. I have learned the lesson of sacrifice and devotion from her. She is an inspiration to me and always will be. I have been still learning from her since my birth. Whatever my attitude is today all because of her teachings.

Our duties towards her

When we were just kids and could not be able to help ourselves, she took care of us and devoted her days and nights to the sake of our happiness. But, Today we are mature enough to take responsibility. Now we must serve our Mother with love.

We should try to get her free from all her responsibilities at least once a week. What does she expect from us other than respect? So we need to respect her heartily. We must always try to keep her happy and comfortable. But one thing is clear we cannot repay her favours.

Final words

To sum it up, A mother is a beautiful gem in everyone’s life and can not be replaced by anyone else. She is the one who takes care of us in our childhood , encourages us in our teenage, and supports us in our hard times. They are a great invention of God. All the mothers on the planet, be a human, animals, or any other species, are greatly appreciable.

Defining a good mother in few words is never an easy task. However in a very simple words we can say that a good mother is the one for whom her child is her world. There are many qualities which I see in my mother which makes her the world’s best mother. She loves her child strongly and deeply without any condition. Apart from showering her love of motherhood she also takes care of her child with a great responsibility.

She is the statue of forgiveness and forgives each and every mistake of ours and also ensures that we realize our mistakes and understand our responsibility. A good mother does every effort to make her child one in a million and sacrifices every comfort of her life so that her child could lead a comfortable life. The selfless love a mother showers on her children is the most valuable thing in this whole world which could never be replaced by anything.

Qualities of a Mother

There are certain natural qualities which already get inherited into a woman on acquiring motherhood. But there are also few qualities which are required for becoming a good mother. The major qualities of a mother are as follows:

Responsible

Acquiring motherhood comes with great responsibility. The responsibility of taking care of child before and after birth is one of the most important qualities of a mother. She is the one who takes care of her child since birth and nurtures him to stand on his own feet.

  • Selfless Love

A mother will always shower her children with her love without anything in return. She always loves her children selflessly in spite of their mischiefs. Her love towards her children always remains the same irrespective of her child’s age.

A mother should always be supportive to their children. She should always stand strong besides her children in all of their ups and downs. She should be always there to support her children in their rightful decisions and interests.

This is the quality which every mother should inculcate on acquiring motherhood. Dealing with kids always requires a high amount of patience as they are still in a growing phase and are not matured enough to understand things at one go. Hence they need to be reminded again and again till they understand and become responsible.

The ability to understand another person’s feelings is called as empathy. A mother should be empathetic towards her child because unless you understand the feelings of your kid you will not be able to understand his/her issue.

Why Mother is Important in our Life?

The importance of mother could be easily understood from the fact that the first word uttered from the mouth of a child is ‘ma ma’. She is the source of life and the reason for our existence. She is the one who can happily sacrifice everything in her life just for the sake of her child’s happiness. Is the first teacher of a child who introduces him to the world and the first best friend with whom we can share all our secrets.

Mothers are the backbone of every family who binds the whole family and unites it into a single but powerful entity. They give us the confidence to face the world and motivate us to achieve success in our life. They are the only one who will never have any ill thoughts against their children and always pray and hope better for them. A good mother acts like a sculptor who moulds her children into beautiful sculptures which are highly appreciated and respected in the society.

My mother is the holy creation of god and a source of providing life to us. She is a sacred statue of selfless love, sacrifices, forgiveness and patience. She is the guiding soul who helps us to progress on the right path and achieve success in our life. Mother’s selfless love towards her children could never be replaced by anything in this world. We as her children should do our best to make her happy and comfortable all the time especially when she becomes old. It is our responsibility to bestow her with the same amount of love, care and understanding as she had showered on us when we were young.

Mother is the first word of a child. As for me, my mother is the most precious gift of God for me. It is a very challenging task for me to describe her in words. For every child, the mother is the most caring and loving person they have ever met in life.

My mother also possesses all those qualities that a mother has. We have 6 members in our family; my father-mother, my grandparents and my younger sister and me. But my mother is the only member for whom we can call our house “A Home”.

My mother is an early riser. She gets up at dawn and starts her schedule. She takes proper care of us and feeds us different delicious food. My mother knows all the likes and dislikes of each and every member of our family.

She even remains alert and checks whether my grandparents have had their medicines on time or not. My grandfather calls my mother ‘the manager of the family’ as she can manage each and everything in the family.

Famous poet George Eliot quotes

Life began with waking up

And loving my mother’s face

YES, we all start our day with our mother’s smiling face. My day started when my mother gets me up early in the morning. For me, my mom is the best example of love and kindness in this universe. She knows how to take care of us.

From the very tender age, I became a fan of her as I like my mom’s hardworking and dedicated nature. My mom sacrificed a lot in order to shape my life. She has brought me up with utmost love and care.

She could understand me even when I couldn’t utter a word. Mother is another name of true love. A mother loves his child selflessly and doesn’t expect or demand anything in return. My mother whom I call mom turns our house into a home.

My mother is the busiest person at our home. She gets up much before the sun rises and start to perform her duty. She cooks food for us, takes care of us, goes shopping and even plans our future too.

In our family, my mother plans how to spend and how to save for the future. My mom was my first teacher. She also plays a vital role in shaping my moral character. She doesn’t even forget to take care of our health.

Whenever any one of our family members falls sick, my mother spends a sleepless night and sits beside him/her and take care of him/her for the whole night. My mom never tires of her responsibility. My father also depends on her whenever he finds any difficulty in taking any serious decision.

The word mother is full of emotion and love. The value of this sweet word is truly felt by those children who don’t have anyone to call ‘mother’. So the one who has his/her mother beside them should feel proud.

But in today’s world, some wicked children consider their mother a burden when she gets old. The person who spends all her life for their children become a burden for their child at the last moment of her life.

Some selfish child even doesn’t bother to send his/her mom to old age home. This is really a shame and unfortunate incident as well. The government should keep an eye to those incidents and should take those shameless children in judicial custody.

I want to stand with my mother like a shadow all the time. I know today I am here only because of her. So I want to serve my mother for the rest of my life. I also want to build my carrier so that my mom feels proud of me.

We all love our parents.  Parents are those by whom we are taken care of. A child has a mother and a father; the female parent of the children is termed as a mother. No word or sentence in the world can define the word “Mother” completely. Today, we will discuss mother, a topic that will always remain incomplete because it is very hard to describe her in words.

Short and Long Paragraphs on Mother

Here, I’m presenting paragraphs on Mother in the different word limits. It would be helpful for students of classes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. The language of these paragraphs is kept simple for easy understanding of kids.

Paragraph 1 – 100 Words(Who is a Mother?)

A mother is a precious gift of God. A mother plays an important role in bringing a child to life. A mother is the support system of children. She takes care of her child and protects him from all the difficult situations. A mother is a form of God on the Earth who tries to fulfill all the needs and requirements of her child. A mother is an ocean of motherhood whose love and care for her children never decreases. A mother does not need any sign to understand our needs. She can feel every pain, every gain, and every requirement just by seeing our eyes.

Paragraph 2 – 120 Words(Love of a Mother)

The first word a child speaks after his birth is “Maa”. This is enough to understand the love and affection of a mother for her children. A mother is a person who can risk her life to save her children from every danger.

The person who cries when we get hurt and the one who is happier when we achieve our goal is none other than a “mother”. Have you ever experienced the joy of heaven on Earth? Go visit your mother’s lap. The lap of a mother is a place where we forget all the pain, it is the most satisfactory and relaxing place. Doesn’t matter how rich we are or how old we are, when we get tired or stuck in any problem, we need our mother’s support.

  • All the work my mother does for other family members.
  • The bond between my mother and me.

Forming a few lines about the topic can help children write the essay better. By simply connecting those points and expanding on them, these central ideas can form the backbone of the essay:

  • My mother’s name is <add name>.
  • She is a homemaker, and works very hard.
  • Everyone at home loves and respects her.
  • She takes care of me and Julie, my furry friend.
  • She keeps the whole house clean and organised.
  • She cooks delicious food for us.
  • She helps me with my assignments.
  • She is a kind person and cares about other animals and birds.
  • She is one of the most talented people I know, being skilled in cooking, taking care of us and doing well in everything she does.
  • I aspire to be like her when I grow up.

Mothers occupy a very special place in each child’s life. To help class 3 children articulate their feelings for their mothers, here is an example of a short essay on this topic –

My mother’s name is <insert name>. She is kind-hearted, beautiful and intelligent and takes care of the whole house. She helps me with my studies and even takes me to the park to play when I have been studying for too long. Then, she ends my day by reading me stories at bedtime. She is very kind and compassionate and helps poor people, animals and birds. She is also very active and talented in keeping the house clean and organised. Most of the day, she has so much work to do that she doesn’t get much time to rest. My father helps her at times and asks her to rest. Whenever I tell her anything, she listens to me patiently. I love my mother.

A mother is a very special person for every child. Here’s an example that children can look at to write their own essays that portray their feelings accurately:

My mother’s name is Aparajita. ‘Aparajita’ means that which cannot be defeated. The name fits my mother. She is a very strong woman. She always stands up for what is right. She is very kind. She treats every person and every animal with lots of kindness. She takes care of my grandparents. She cares for everyone else in the house, along with me and Julie, my pet. She wakes up early morning, and makes tiffin for me. She drops me at the bus stand. After I return from school, she takes Julie and me to the park nearby.

We have a very nice time at the park with the other kids. She helps me with my school assignments, homework, and projects in the evenings. All of us have dinner together. Every night she reads me beautiful bedtime stories. On Sundays, she makes a special breakfast for the whole family. My mother makes delicious meals. I love the pudding she makes, and sometimes she layers it with jelly on top. It’s so tasty. My friends also love it. She bakes gorgeous cakes on my birthdays. She also makes crispy, tasty treats for Julie. She cooks tasty food for everyone in the house. My father also helps her sometimes.

On every Sunday we go to the amusement park. My mother cares for poor people. If she sees any poor person, she gives them food. Last week, when we were coming out of the cake shop, a poor man was sitting outside. Mom got some cakes for him. She donates clothes, medicines, and blankets to the poor. She feeds strays in our neighbourhood. She also feeds birds on the terrace. She keeps a big bowl of water on the terrace for thirsty birds in summers.

My mother is very patient. She says that it’s very important to be honest, no matter what. She is the backbone of our family. She keeps the family closely knit together. She is also very courageous. I feel good when she motivates me, even though I don’t do so well in exams. She appreciates me when I do well and tells me that we should always give our best. I love my mother.

Essay writing will benefit your child in their development. When your little one writes on this topic, it develops their thought process, improves their writing skills and even the basics of grammar.

Essay writing has its benefits. Writing about one’s mother is always special, and the mother is the person a child loves the most. There have been many quotations and work by great people revolving around the love of a mother and her child. Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Mother and Child’ is an example of the beautiful bond between a mother and child.

How talking openly against stigma helped a mother and son cope with bipolar disorder.

"I had seen it as only from my point of view, but until that day, I hadn't considered what it was like for someone outside, looking in," says Eric Walton, after his mother read him her blog post titled "I Am Adam Lanza's Mother."

It was December 2012 when the country learned about the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School , that left 20 children dead at the hands of 20-year-old shooter Adam Lanza.

After the shock and the initial grief came questions about how it could have happened and why. Reports that Adam Lanza may have had some form of undiagnosed mental illness surfaced.

The tragedy drove Liza Long to write a blog post on that same day, titled "I Am Adam Lanza's Mother." She wasn't Lanza's mom, but she was raising a child with a mental disorder.

Her 13-year-old son had violent rages on a regular basis. He was in and out of juvenile detention. He had threatened to kill her. She detailed all this in her essay that took off online.

Now, four years later, her son is speaking out too.

This week on For The Record : a mother, a son and life on the edge of bipolar disorder.

Eric Walton, Liza Long's son, is now a 16-year-old high school sophomore in Boise, Idaho. After a series of misdiagnoses, he's been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

But four years ago, he didn't know much about his condition.

"I knew that there were times when I would have rages, didn't like them. I knew that I wanted them to stop," Walton says.

Except he felt a loss of control in those moments. He describes the onset of these rages as a "blackout" of sorts.

"I would start getting angry," he says. "Then it's like being trapped inside a box inside your own head. It was like a television on the wall that shows you what you're seeing. You can feel everything, but you no longer have the video game controller to control your own body."

Walton's mom says when Eric would get into those states, "he would express a lot of suicidal thoughts, and hearing him just say, 'I want to die, I just want to end it.'"

Then, two days before the Newtown shooting, Eric Walton had another episode.

"It was a pretty eventful day, even for my rages," Walton recalls. "I'd woken up and I'd slipped on a pair of navy blue sweats. But my school has this policy that you have to be wearing black pants. So my mom and I got into an argument over whether navy blue was actually black."

The fight got bad and it escalated as it often did. Eric threatened to kill himself, and he threatened to kill his mom.

"At that point, we were almost to my school, but mom decided to take me to Intermountain [Hospital] instead," he says, referring to the mental health facility in Boise.

"It took I think three or four of the nurses to hold me down," he says. "They shoved a needle into my arm full of some kind of tranquilizer. And I woke up the next day in Intermountain."

That day left Liza Long feeling "completely hopeless."

"I really felt like a failure on that day," she says. "Here I had this child, he had seen multiple doctors, multiple specialists, numerous medications. Nothing had helped my child, he had been in juvenile detention four times at that point, every time for a behavioral symptom of a brain disease," she says.

Two days later, the news broke out of Newtown.

"I just put my head on my desk and started to cry," Long recalls. "I just had this overwhelming sense of empathy for Nancy Lanza. I know at that point people were already blaming her, but instead I could just see in my mind this little boy who probably had needed help."

She started writing about how tough it was to be the single mother of four kids, one of them a middle-schooler struggling with mental illness, a kid who could violently rage one hour, and turn back into a calm, sweet boy the next.

Days after she posted the essay on her anonymous blog and millions of shares later, the Huffington Post picked it up — and then it was everywhere.

Three days after she wrote the piece, she visited her son in the hospital and read it to him off her phone.

"It was very powerful piece," he says. "I had seen it as only from my point of view, but until that day, I hadn't considered what it was like for someone outside, looking in."

She got messages of support, but she also got criticism. People laid into her for comparing her son to a mass murderer, violating his privacy, and some suggested that she was somehow responsible for her son's condition. It stung, but for the most part she pushed it away.

"Mother-blaming is as old as Eve though, right, it's really easy for us to blame mothers, and that was exactly the point I was trying to make," Long says. "Families are suffering in shame and silence; I was suffering in shame and silence. So is my child. But when we don't share our stories, there's no chance that we're going to make change."

That could have been the end of the story, but that blog post ended up changing everything for Long and Walton.

Long was inundated with emails, as readers continued to reach out to her.

"One person was very persistent, and she kept saying 'I know someone who can help,' " Long says.

That person was a research assistant who worked for Dr. Demitri Papolos, director of research for the Juvenile Bipolar Research Foundation.

After meeting and talking with Walton and his mother, Dr. Papolos understood Walton's symptoms. It looked like a particular strain of bipolar disorder.

"The symptoms that occur within the manic domain are hyperactivity, agitation, racing thoughts, pressured speech," Dr. Papolos says. "In the bipolar form, you see psycho-motor retardation, lethargy, fatigue, oversleeping, depressed mood."

"Mania feels really, really good," says Eric Walton. "But it's also not that good because when you start moving at that speed, no one can keep up with you."

On the flip side of the disorder, "I go through 3-4 days of almost complete inactivity," he says. "I'm kind of depressed and lethargic, and I don't even want to get out of bed."

"They are overwhelmed with fear and they misperceive things as threatening when they're not," says Dr. Papolos.

Those symptoms check out with Walton. "Any time I felt attacked. It was like a defense mechanism type thing."

After Dr. Papolos diagnosed Walton with childhood bipolar disorder, everything got better.

"I got the correct diagnosis. I got put on the right medication. And I haven't had a rage, I think, since that day," Walton says. "It's funny, I don't even keep track anymore."

But the road to pinning down the diagnosis is often the hardest part, especially for parents, who often have to become psychiatric advocates for their children.

"The problem is that we are still relatively in infancy in terms of understanding the nature of psychiatric diagnosis, particularly in children," Dr. Papolos says. "I think [parents] have to do a lot of homework on their own. I wish I had another answer, but it's the way things are currently."

Today, Eric owns his diagnosis. "I choose to think of it as my superpower."

"I'm really, really creative. I'm very empathetic. I have a lot of skills that teenagers don't normally have: conflict resolution, mindfulness — just things I've had to pick up over the years because it kind of helped control myself before the right diagnosis."

His TED Talk in Boise early this month was the first time he outed himself publicly as the boy in that essay. And he used it to deliver a broader message:

"Mental illness should be treated with respect and kindness, not fear and stigma. People with mental illness are all human beings. And they deserve the same respect as anyone else."

And it was his mother's willingness to talk openly against mental stigma, a few years ago that helped him carry that message in the first place

"When I wrote that blog post, I was really concerned that my son's fate was prison or worse, and now we are talking every day about college, about what he'd like to major in," Liza Long says. "I don't think there are any right or wrong answers for Eric. There just a lot of great opportunities for Eric."

And her inbox is still overflowing.

" I have a tremendous sense of gratitude honestly mostly for all the — I still hear from families every day, some who just found that blog post for the first time. And to be able to connect people with resources, to be able to say 'look there is hope for you, don't give up on your kid,' that's been really powerful for me."

Book Review

Disability Intimacy: Essays on Love, Care, and Desire

Edited by Alice Wong Vintage: 384 pages, $19 If you buy books linked on our site, The Times may earn a commission from Bookshop.org , whose fees support independent bookstores.

To whom does desire belong? How about love and care? These are the questions at the heart of “Disability Intimacy,” a new book of essays and ephemera collected by the San Francisco activist Alice Wong, and the answers are painfully obvious: Those human experiences are for everyone. What’s less obvious to many, and acutely painful to some of us, is that those questions needed to be asked and answered. This book needed to exist.

The cover of "Disability Intimacy"

It is a longstanding and unfortunate truth that disabled people are often seen as undesirable and even as unable to experience desire, love or care in the ways that all individuals do. As disabled people we understand how false that notion is and how harmful it can be. Giving and receiving love — physically or verbally, in a context of romance, sex, close friendship or family bonds — is as much our right to experience as anyone else’s, and our stories of intimate connections and losses are worth telling as much as anyone else’s. So I commend Wong and the collection’s 40 contributors for taking on this topic.

“Disability Intimacy” is not an extended lament. Many of its standouts are downright celebratory, as well as lessons in engaging storytelling. “The Last Walk” by Melissa Hung explores the grief of losing a beloved friend while simultaneously cherishing their last moments together and the sling bag that became a physical memory of her friend Judy. In “Hi, Are You Single?” by Ryan J. Haddad, one of the standout poems in the collection, Haddad explores the messy, awkward and welcome way a hookup can support their collective desire for pleasure.

Having contributed to and read Wong’s anthology from 2020, “Disability Visibility,” I thought I knew what I was getting into, but the two collections are quite different. It was disappointing to come away from “Intimacy” without a theme as clear as that of “Visibility,” perhaps in part reflecting the older collection’s more straightforward subject matter. Love is complicated. And 40 contributors is a lot.

As one of the first of its kind to attempt what it is attempting, “Disability Intimacy” has the unfair expectation to be everything for everyone, to answer the question of desirability for an entire community that is not monolithic. Wong refuses to shut out the “other” in favor of the conventionally digestible. This collection shines in its entries that take big swings, discussing topics such as BDSM, queer love and intergenerational relationships — and even laziness, a concept that one essay reclaims and celebrates as a purposeful act of rest, epitomized by the love between a father and son who connect over turning out the light and climbing in bed to take naps. In these pieces, the authors seem to be living as unapologetically on the page as they do in life.

Tucked among the essays, readers will be delighted to also discover poems and even a conversation between two disabled people of color about redefining intimacy for themselves, ableism and what they refuse to call intimacy. It’s a refreshing and effective shakeup of the anthology form. It’s also a lot to take in.

I had to reread certain sections as some of the points got lost along the way, and sometimes I found myself mentally rearranging the book because entries felt misplaced. Although many of the pieces could have been shorter, none should have been left out. Might the cause have been better served with these many entries divided between two volumes? This could have encouraged the reader to sit with the thoughts and feelings that come up rather than rushing onward.

There is often a lot of pressure placed on books of this kind that amplify marginalized voices or tackle taboo topics, but remember: Sometimes a book does the world a service not because it is encyclopedic or full of answers but simply because it raises questions and starts conversations.

In the end, what we readers ask of ourselves is what counts. Whom do we allow ourselves to desire, and why? Toward whose stories do we gravitate, and whom do we leave in the margins? How will we expand our own worldview?

Keah Brown , a journalist, activist, actor and screenwriter, is the author of “ The Pretty One ” and “ The Secret Summer Promise .”

I Thought the Bragg Case Against Trump Was a Legal Embarrassment. Now I Think It’s a Historic Mistake.

A black-and-white photo with a camera in the foreground and mid-ground and a building in the background.

By Jed Handelsman Shugerman

Mr. Shugerman is a law professor at Boston University.

About a year ago, when Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan district attorney, indicted former President Donald Trump, I was critical of the case and called it an embarrassment. I thought an array of legal problems would and should lead to long delays in federal courts.

After listening to Monday’s opening statement by prosecutors, I still think the district attorney has made a historic mistake. Their vague allegation about “a criminal scheme to corrupt the 2016 presidential election” has me more concerned than ever about their unprecedented use of state law and their persistent avoidance of specifying an election crime or a valid theory of fraud.

To recap: Mr. Trump is accused in the case of falsifying business records. Those are misdemeanor charges. To elevate it to a criminal case, Mr. Bragg and his team have pointed to potential violations of federal election law and state tax fraud. They also cite state election law, but state statutory definitions of “public office” seem to limit those statutes to state and local races.

Both the misdemeanor and felony charges require that the defendant made the false record with “intent to defraud.” A year ago, I wondered how entirely internal business records (the daily ledger, pay stubs and invoices) could be the basis of any fraud if they are not shared with anyone outside the business. I suggested that the real fraud was Mr. Trump’s filing an (allegedly) false report to the Federal Election Commission, and that only federal prosecutors had jurisdiction over that filing.

A recent conversation with Jeffrey Cohen, a friend, Boston College law professor and former prosecutor, made me think that the case could turn out to be more legitimate than I had originally thought. The reason has to do with those allegedly falsified business records: Most of them were entered in early 2017, generally before Mr. Trump filed his Federal Election Commission report that summer. Mr. Trump may have foreseen an investigation into his campaign, leading to its financial records. He may have falsely recorded these internal records before the F.E.C. filing as consciously part of the same fraud: to create a consistent paper trail and to hide intent to violate federal election laws, or defraud the F.E.C.

In short: It’s not the crime; it’s the cover-up.

Looking at the case in this way might address concerns about state jurisdiction. In this scenario, Mr. Trump arguably intended to deceive state investigators, too. State investigators could find these inconsistencies and alert federal agencies. Prosecutors could argue that New York State agencies have an interest in detecting conspiracies to defraud federal entities; they might also have a plausible answer to significant questions about whether New York State has jurisdiction or whether this stretch of a state business filing law is pre-empted by federal law.

However, this explanation is a novel interpretation with many significant legal problems. And none of the Manhattan district attorney’s filings or today’s opening statement even hint at this approach.

Instead of a theory of defrauding state regulators, Mr. Bragg has adopted a weak theory of “election interference,” and Justice Juan Merchan described the case , in his summary of it during jury selection, as an allegation of falsifying business records “to conceal an agreement with others to unlawfully influence the 2016 election.”

As a reality check: It is legal for a candidate to pay for a nondisclosure agreement. Hush money is unseemly, but it is legal. The election law scholar Richard Hasen rightly observed , “Calling it election interference actually cheapens the term and undermines the deadly serious charges in the real election interference cases.”

In Monday’s opening argument, the prosecutor Matthew Colangelo still evaded specifics about what was illegal about influencing an election, but then he claimed , “It was election fraud, pure and simple.” None of the relevant state or federal statutes refer to filing violations as fraud. Calling it “election fraud” is a legal and strategic mistake, exaggerating the case and setting up the jury with high expectations that the prosecutors cannot meet.

The most accurate description of this criminal case is a federal campaign finance filing violation. Without a federal violation (which the state election statute is tethered to), Mr. Bragg cannot upgrade the misdemeanor counts into felonies. Moreover, it is unclear how this case would even fulfill the misdemeanor requirement of “intent to defraud” without the federal crime.

In stretching jurisdiction and trying a federal crime in state court, the Manhattan district attorney is now pushing untested legal interpretations and applications. I see three red flags raising concerns about selective prosecution upon appeal.

First, I could find no previous case of any state prosecutor relying on the Federal Election Campaign Act either as a direct crime or a predicate crime. Whether state prosecutors have avoided doing so as a matter of law, norms or lack of expertise, this novel attempt is a sign of overreach.

Second, Mr. Trump’s lawyers argued that the New York statute requires that the predicate (underlying) crime must also be a New York crime, not a crime in another jurisdiction. The district attorney responded with judicial precedents only about other criminal statutes, not the statute in this case. In the end, the prosecutors could not cite a single judicial interpretation of this particular statute supporting their use of the statute (a plea deal and a single jury instruction do not count).

Third, no New York precedent has allowed an interpretation of defrauding the general public. Legal experts have noted that such a broad “election interference” theory is unprecedented, and a conviction based on it may not survive a state appeal.

Mr. Trump’s legal team also undercut itself for its decisions in the past year: His lawyers essentially put all of their eggs in the meritless basket of seeking to move the trial to federal court, instead of seeking a federal injunction to stop the trial entirely. If they had raised the issues of selective or vindictive prosecution and a mix of jurisdictional, pre-emption and constitutional claims, they could have delayed the trial past Election Day, even if they lost at each federal stage.

Another reason a federal crime has wound up in state court is that President Biden’s Justice Department bent over backward not to reopen this valid case or appoint a special counsel. Mr. Trump has tried to blame Mr. Biden for this prosecution as the real “election interference.” The Biden administration’s extra restraint belies this allegation and deserves more credit.

Eight years after the alleged crime itself, it is reasonable to ask if this is more about Manhattan politics than New York law. This case should serve as a cautionary tale about broader prosecutorial abuses in America — and promote bipartisan reforms of our partisan prosecutorial system.

Nevertheless, prosecutors should have some latitude to develop their case during trial, and maybe they will be more careful and precise about the underlying crime, fraud and the jurisdictional questions. Mr. Trump has received sufficient notice of the charges, and he can raise his arguments on appeal. One important principle of “ our Federalism ,” in the Supreme Court’s terms, is abstention , that federal courts should generally allow state trials to proceed first and wait to hear challenges later.

This case is still an embarrassment, in terms of prosecutorial ethics and apparent selectivity. Nevertheless, each side should have its day in court. If convicted, Mr. Trump can fight many other days — and perhaps win — in appellate courts. But if Monday’s opening is a preview of exaggerated allegations, imprecise legal theories and persistently unaddressed problems, the prosecutors might not win a conviction at all.

Premature baby saved from her dead mother’s womb in Gaza dies after 5 days in an incubator

RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — A premature Palestinian infant, who was rescued from her mother’s womb shortly after the  woman was killed  in an Israeli airstrike, has died, her uncle said Friday.

Sabreen Jouda died in a Gaza hospital on Thursday after her health deteriorated and medical teams were unable to save her, said her uncle, Rami al-Sheikh.

Sabreen’s home in the southern Gaza city of Rafah was hit by an Israeli airstrike shortly before midnight Saturday. Her parents and 4-year-old sister were killed.

First responders took the bodies to a nearby hospital, where medical workers performed an emergency cesarean section on her mother, Sabreen al-Sakani, who was 30 weeks pregnant. The infant was kept in an incubator in a neonatal intensive care unit at another hospital until she died five days later.

Al-Sheikh told The Associated Press that Sabreen was buried next to her father on Thursday.

“We were attached to this baby in a crazy way,” he said, speaking near Sabreen’s grave in a cemetery in Rafah.

“God had taken something from us but given us something in return” with the baby surviving after her family died, he said. “But (now) he has taken them all. My brother’s family is completely wiped out. It’s been deleted from the civil registry. There is no trace of him left behind.”

More than 34,000 Palestinians  have been killed during the Israel-Hamas war, according to local health officials, who say about two-thirds of the dead are women and children. The health officials don’t differentiate among combatants and civilians in their count.

Israel declared  war on Hamas  and unleashed a pulverizing air and ground offensive in Gaza in response to the militants’ Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel. The militants killed about 1,200 people in Israel and took another 250 hostage.

More than half of Gaza’s 2.3 million people have sought refuge in Rafah, where Israel has conducted near-daily raids as it prepares for a possible offensive in the city.

My babysitter Noreen wore long acrylics in frosted pink that, to my five-year-old self, were the epitome of glam. I loved to watch her hands as she fried a grilled cheese, finger-combed watermelon-scented mousse through her bangs, or twisted the phone cord as she chatted to her boyfriend, Gene. Even when one broke and she had to hold it in place with a Band-Aid, I swooned at the impossibly adult je ne sais quoi of being a woman with nails to boot, imitating her by sticking strawberries on the ends of my fingers or forming my own with red Silly Putty.

Meanwhile, my mother and her friends were clean girls before there was a name for the aesthetic. As artists in the male-dominated ’80s, they were wearing loose-fitting suiting by Comme des Garçons and cutting their nails to the quick, partially for practicality (they were wielding paintbrushes and cameras, sculpting and performing) and also to prove that their femininity didn’t prevent them from playing in the big leagues—a stigma that culturally we’ve at least pretended to abandon. But, as always, it takes work to look effortless—my mother had her nails buffed and painted with a clear lacquer every other week, a process I watched like a hawk, often grabbing pinks and purples and begging her to give them a try. The closest she came was classic red for special occasions. Meanwhile, I collected Wet n Wild polishes and lined them up on my windowsill like I was the proud owner of a rainbow itself.

In high school in Brooklyn, long nails festooned with sunsets or airbrushed with the heavy tracks of monster trucks, screaming CAUTION against yellow paint, became an accessory as coveted as nameplate earrings and Timberland boots. (Like so many good things, nail art was co-opted from the hip-hop looks of people like Lil’ Kim and Foxy Brown that began influencing us all in the early aughts and still do today. Throw in the kawaii nail art of Japan , and rough it up with runway-ready piercings and gems, and you had decades of trends.) My mother found acrylics “too mature” and made a highly specific rule that I could wear any nail color I wanted as long as it didn’t read as adult—baby blues, electric greens but absolutely no red, no coral, not even a pink. Through my 20s I continued to associate bright nails with personal expression, and was an early adopter of nail art salons like New York’s Valley Nails and Vanity Projects, where I’d watch with jealousy as the burlesque dancer in the seat beside me applied inch-long tips studded with faux rubies.

But once I reached my 30s, a combination of maturity, practicality, and the fatigue that comes with increased responsibility meant that the closest I came to turning a look was a few coats of polish on a special occasion—the rest of the time, it was a quick clip when they started to look ragged, stained with watercolor and pen, uneven, and stress-bitten.

But when the writers strike hit this past summer, suddenly I had oodles of time stretching ahead of me, nowhere to be and no time to be there. The last time I’d felt that way was long before I started my career, when I’d spend high school afternoons in the drug store testing colors on my thumb or a lazy Saturday in my earliest 20s requesting the technicians at Valley replicate everything from my dog’s face to oozing slime. Even when I went to Japan, a mecca of nail art, it was to shoot an episode of Girls and I was too rushed to decorate every finger, simply getting one of my tattoos re-created on my thumbs (although I did come home with boxes and boxes of press-ons, including a set that depicted smiling cups of pudding dancing on thumb and forefinger).

And so came my summer of nails, the longer the better, inspired by Zoë Kravitz ’s Catwoman, by early Lana Del Rey videos back when she called herself the “gangsta Nancy Sinatra,” by Lil’ Kim matching her nails to her pasties. I studied nail shapes (coffin? Who knew) and started a Pinterest, enjoying—in no particular order—’70s chevrons, a medieval harlequin pattern, ditzy florals, red glitter and black stilettos that looked like Morticia Addams was headed to a Berlin rave. It made every email I sent feel like an event and every book require a hand-selfie (helfie?). No matter your level of daily dress-up, your gender expression, or your age, there’s nothing quite like a nail to make every point you make feel, well, pointed.

I loved every second of it. Yes, it required reading a surprisingly lengthy article about how to text with tips (pro move: Use the sides of your thumbs, like you’re playing Nintendo), and I had to carry tweezers to remove my credit card from the ATM. (Pop-top seltzer cans? Out of the question.) But what I lost in efficiency, I more than made up for in the feeling of slinky glamour that my newly extended fingers gave me. (And as a girl with hands that resemble a bouquet of hot dogs, that’s always a boost, self-love be damned.)

“You’re texting like you’re 98,” my husband noted (though even he had to admit it was worth it for the back scratches).

But summer always fades to fall, and when our strike ended (hooray! We did it!) and it was time to head back to work, it became clear that my nails were going to be a hindrance when it came to everything from doing quick rewrites, to flipping through the pages of my binder on set, to leashing up the dogs quickly in the morning, to buttoning my jeans and lacing my sneakers (summer had been all nail-proof cotton dresses and old-school Adidas slides). And so off they came, revealing the kind of cracked nails you’d see in the “before” portion of an infomercial at 3 a.m. Paging Sally Hansen.

But when my Vogue editor approached me, suggesting I try a week as a clean girly (to quote the Gen Z’ers in my office) and a week as Miss Thang, I gladly accepted. After all, I was going to be manicured by none other than Michelle Class , who boasts clients such as Kate Moss (clean clean clean) and Lily Allen (no time for the short-nail trend, according to Michelle). The nail artist recently gave Allen a matte-gray coffin shape so long I would be forced to lie in bed all day. We would try an over-the-top moment of glamour, and then I would embrace the new desires of nail fetishists: Spring 2024 runways went for the viral “glazed doughnut” and “ballet-core” vibes (Christian Siriano, Sandy Liang), with Proenza Schouler showing a classic short crimson that still reads squeaky clean.

After rescheduling with Michelle because my dog had an asthma attack and I needed not to have my hands in a gel machine so I could work her nebulizer (an early omen that epic nails might not work for me), we made an appointment for a Friday afternoon. As Michelle worked away, I watched the feed of footage from set on two iPads and dictated my notes to a patient coworker, my hands shaking with the desire to get back to typing. My kitten begged for treats as my (other) dog coughed up grass. I could do nothing about any of it. I felt grateful I am not yet changing diapers as I tried to unwrap a sandwich to little success, filling a not-yet-finished nail with an unintended scoop of avocado. When my husband returned home and asked why I hadn’t finished putting on the duvet cover, I simply held up my new almond-shaped gel tips—nude until just above the quick, with a tortoiseshell tip and an arc of gold—as explanation.

While these nails felt the best of any “ falsies ” I’d ever worn, light and natural, they were still precarious. They elicited oohs and ahhs from my colleagues, but consternation when it took me about 15 minutes longer than usual to rewrite the scenes for the day. Meanwhile, after three days of telling myself I would remember how to text with them on again (and three days of asking my husband to please do everything from pulling up my Spanx to telling my parents not to worry that I hadn’t responded to the family group chat), I took to leaving voice notes instead, all of which started: “Sorry, but I have fake nails at the moment.”

It wasn’t that I’d been good at handling the nails over the summer and had now somehow forgotten, but rather that I’d enjoyed my summer of the nail as a distraction from a strike that lasted months longer than we’d hoped, as concern for colleagues and below-the-line workers mounted and free time turned to free-floating anxiety. The nails worked for carrying picket signs, reading books I’d kept in a pile by the bed all year, even painting murals on my walls (all the hobbies I adopted in place of my beloved day job). On those lazy days, I could take my routine slow, devising cunning tricks for doling out pet food from vacuum-sealed packages, washing dishes like I was more breakable than the plates (nothing like a broken nail to remind you of our essential human fallibility). But by the end of a week with Michelle’s mob-wife look, I had to admit—sadly, because I felt like a pop star and criminal mastermind all at the same time—that it was clean-girl time.

Hours before I was due to attend a film premiere, a lovely nail technician (who was as impressed by Michelle’s work as everyone, and felt it was almost a sacrilege taking a literal jackhammer to the nails) cut me back down to size, presenting me with so many impossible-to-distinguish nudes before applying OPI Bubble Bath . I felt my shoulders slump lower and my conviction that I could rob a bank without consequence disappear.

Luckily my stylist was there to talk sense back into me—my looks for the evening included a Simone Rocha tulle cocktail dress bedecked in delicate blue bows, whose matching gloves would have been immediately shredded by my talons. Next was an Issey Miyake Grecian-draped gown in sheer silver—and if there’s a fashion ambassador for the modern clean girl (which, we should note, isn’t just a term for girls, or people who shower a lot; anyone can be a clean girl with the right highlighter and Hailey Bieber –approved moisturizer), it would be Issey. I was reminded of my first Met Gala, when Hamish Bowles —a man I would trust in any style emergency—encouraged me to wipe off my nail art: “Not for right here, not for right now,” he smiled. Now I felt, with my child-length nails but adult sophistication, sexy in a more sly way. Plus, I was able to pull up my own underpants. Now that’s a win-win.

So, was there a victor in the experiment? Who had triumphed in the face-off between sleek practicality and sensual excess? The short nail may be winning on runways at the moment, but Michelle told me that her clients who are “long-nail people will always be long-nail people.” It’s not a trend for them, but a way of life. It would be easy to say that the devotees must have pampered lives, not working with their hands, but how many times have we seen someone dole out cash at a register or corral their kids with a nail as long as some pinkies themselves? The nail becomes a nexus of power for them, just as the absence of a long nail served the same purpose for the women I knew growing up.

And is it wrong to say that I may not belong to one sect or the other but am, instead, whatever the nail equivalent of bi(coastal) is? I love each expression precisely because of how different it can make me feel, taking me from a beacon of old-school femininity (with a twist) to something more practical but equally delicate. If the short nail is Audrey Hepburn, the long one is Sophia Loren. In modern terms, let’s say my Natalie Portman sun is facing off against my powerful Cardi B rising. And don’t we all contain multitudes?
