The most common iPhone 7 problems and how to fix them

Released in 2016, the iPhone 7 still holds its own as a midrange smartphone. The camera is a great performer, there are dual speakers, and it was the first flagship Apple device to have an IP67 rating for water resistance. If you’ve managed to get your hands on one, then you’re likely still enjoying it, but sometimes a single issue can kill the fun. We’ve been filtering feedback to isolate the main iPhone 7 problems that users are still running into even now, and we’ve got some potential fixes and workarounds to put the smile back on your face.

Problem: iPhone 7 is not charging

Problem: speaker button is grayed out during calls, problem: no 3.5mm headphone jack, problem: iphone 7 makes a hissing sound, issue: poor battery life.

Is your iPhone 7 not charging? Don’t worry! It happens. Here’s what to do to get it started again.

Potential solutions:

• There may be a problem with your charging cable or the connecting port. Try charging your phone with a new authorized cable or use another port.
• Restart your phone.
• Still not working? It could be that your charging port is worn out. Explore either getting it replaced at an Apple Store, or — as a final option — look at buying a new iPhone .

On some iPhone 7 models, the speaker icon is grayed out when making phone calls. This issue, acknowledged by Apple, affected a small number of users. The company is no longer offering free out-of-warranty repairs for internal speakers.

Potential solution: 

• This issue may be attributed to paired Bluetooth accessories. Turn off Bluetooth by swiping up from the bottom of your phone and tapping on the Bluetooth icon to disable it.

Apple’s decision to kill the headphone jack in the iPhone 7 was controversial. Having to use the Lightning port to plug in headphones means that you can’t charge your iPhone 7 while you’re using headphones. Here are two viable workarounds, as there is no solution to a new design.

Potential solutions :

Many iPhone 7 owners complained about a hissing sound coming from the back of the device. It’s louder when the iPhone is running a demanding app or game, which suggests that it’s related to the processor. Put your ear next to the Apple logo and run something that requires a lot of processing power to test for yourself.

• Put the phone on speaker for a second and then tap on it again to turn it off.
• If it’s a network issue, hang up and call again to check the sound quality.
• Remove the headset.
• Reboot or perform a factory recovery or reset.
• Contact Apple or a qualified technician about a repair.

Battery life for the iPhone 7, although pretty good for the most part, did get  various complaints about rapid battery drain.  These complaints often coincide with an OS update, and get solved with a later update.

• Update to the latest version of iOS.
• If you head into Settings > Battery, you can turn Low Power Mode on to stretch your battery further, but it comes at a cost. Mail fetch, Siri, Background app refresh, automatic downloads, and some visual effects get reduced or turned off completely. However, you can individually turn off any of these things for a lesser bump in battery life.
• Take a look at  Settings > Battery > Battery Usage to see if a particular app is guzzling too much juice. Consider updating, uninstalling, or replacing the offending app.

Problem: Can’t activate your iPhone 7

The iPhone 7 is several years old, but people are still buying and selling secondhand or refurbished units. Here’s what to do if you’re having problems activating your new phone.

• If you’re trying to activate via your cellular connection, switch to Wi-Fi instead.
• Try turning your iPhone off and on again by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button and then dragging the slider to turn the device completely off. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again to turn it back on.
• Contact your carrier and ask if there are any known issues with iPhone 7 activation. You might need to get a replacement SIM card.
• If nothing works, then contact Apple.

This is one of the most widely reported iPhone 7 problems — with  multiple threads on the Apple discussion forums. Problems range from incoming audio that’s distant or too low to hear. Apple has  updated a support page  to help people with sound issues.

Official solution:

• Update to iOS 15.
• Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics and drag the Ringer And Alerts slider to turn the volume up.
• Check the  Ring/Silent switch on the side of the phone to make sure it’s not set to Silent (Orange).
• Make sure your case isn’t blocking the speaker.
• Restart your iPhone.
• Clean any dirt, dust, or debris out of the speaker.
• Launch an app that plays audio or sound effects and adjust the volume using the volume keys or Control Center controls.
• Call Apple Support if all else fails.

When in the middle of a voice call and using either speakerphone or the handset, the mic  cuts out , resulting in static and unintelligible sounds. The problem is intermittent. Often, after hanging up and calling again, the static is gone, but the caller is still hard to hear or muted completely.

• Restart your phone and check for an iOS update.
• Back up your iPhone, then perform a factory reset and restore the phone using the backup.
• Contact Apple Support or go to an Apple Store to rectify a hardware issue if software solutions fail.

Many users took to the Apple discussion forums to report that the Phone app will crash or lock up when in the Phone app’s settings, in the Recent Calls list, and while making calls using Bluetooth headsets. Soft and hard resets have not fixed the problem, and those who have tried a factory reset have not experienced any changes either.

• Update to the latest available version of iOS.
• If the problem started after an update, the update itself may have been installed incorrectly. If possible, restore your device to a backup made before the update was applied, then install the update again.
• Turn off Exchange contacts. You can do so by going to Settings > Contacts > Accounts , then tap your Exchange account(s) and toggle the Contacts slider off.

3D Touch was an integral part of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus , making it easier to interact with apps and access their deep settings and features. While 3D Touch is technically still available in hardware, the feature has been deprecated in later versions of the iOS where Haptic Touch has largely replaced 3D Touch and functions similarly. If you find the press and hold feature is not working as you expect, here are some things you can try.

• Make sure you are using the latest operating system — iOS 15.
• Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics and toggle System Haptics off and on again.
• If you’ve recently applied a new screen protector, remove it and try the press and hold gesture again. If it works, the problem was with the screen protector.
• Clean your touchscreen, as well as your own hands.
• Go to Settings > Accessibility > Haptic Touch and adjust the touch duration.

People on the Apple forums have been having trouble with Touch ID . The feature either stopped working completely or was not functioning optimally, with some users reporting that they can’t use Touch ID while the iPhone is plugged in and charging.

• Restart your phone and then try to use Touch ID again.
• Clean the sensor and the finger(s) used for Touch ID. Dust, dirt, and other debris can interfere with the sensor.
• Remove previously added fingerprints and re-add them. Consider creating multiple fingerprints by scanning the same finger at different angles.
• If it doesn’t work while plugged in, try using a different wall outlet or USB port. Be sure to check the Lightning port as well and remove any debris.
• You should add a new fingerprint on your device every six months, but when you do so, your device’s Touch ID can malfunction. The best way to fix it is by visiting Settings > Touch ID & Passcode and deleting the old fingerprint. Add a new fingerprint and restart your device.
• Contact Apple Support, as it may be a hardware issue — some users noted that Touch ID stopped working after a battery replacement .

Problem: Bluetooth issues

As with other smartphones, people have been having trouble maintaining a Bluetooth connection , either with 3rd party wireless headphones , or when trying to connect their iPhone to a car . Some users have also noticed a much larger drain on the battery when using it.

• Restart the phone.
• Toggle Bluetooth off and on again.
• Unpair the Bluetooth devices and try pairing them again.
• You can try resetting your network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings . Then try Bluetooth again.
• Update the iPhone.
• Perform a factory reset , restore your phone using a backup (or as a new phone) and try Bluetooth again.

This issue affects users with the iPhone 7 Plus. Users on the Apple discussion forums and Reddit  complained that their iPhone 7 Plus shows a black — or sometimes a green or purple — screen when they use their camera. Sometimes an error also appears that says “Emergency iPhone needs to cool down.” Other  users reported that the Camera app doesn’t load.

• The first thing to do is to try the steps  listed on Apple’s support site.
• If the aforementioned steps don’t resolve the issue with your camera, your iPhone 7 is likely suffering from a hardware problem. In that case, we suggest that you contact Apple support or bring it in for servicing.

Apple’s support pages report on the likelihood of micro-abrasions on the glossy finish of the jet black iPhone 7, which was prone to scratching. However, a thread that reached epic proportions on Apple’s discussion forums shows the regular black finish on the iPhone 7 is also prone to chipping and peeling, even when encased.

Workarounds:

• Apple’s warranty doesn’t cover this kind of cosmetic damage. Some users opted to sell their iPhone and get another iPhone 7 in a different color.
• Apple suggests keeping a protective case on the phone at all times.

Over the years, many iPhone 7 users have complained that the phone can get uncomfortably hot. While it’s normal for smartphones to heat up when performing certain CPU-intensive tasks like broadcasting live video, using Snapchat, or playing games, your iPhone should return to a normal operating temperature when you’re done.

• A misbehaving app, possibly working in the background, could be what is causing your iPhone to overheat. Check for any apps that were just updated — this issue is often caused by a faulty update.
• Shut off apps and services like Safari, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, maps, navigation apps, and location services.

• Update your phone to the latest iOS version. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and get a stable version of iOS 15.
• If you have reset your iPhone and restored it and the issue persists, contact Apple Support. A smartphone that is constantly overheating could have a dangerous hardware problem.

Problem: ‘No Service’ detected

In 2016, Apple acknowledged a bug that caused the iPhone 7 to lose cellular service after coming off Airplane Mode. The company resolved the issue and also launched a repair program dedicated to it — discontinued in 2018. However, we include this older problem in case you encounter it.

• Update to the latest version of iOS — iOS 15.
• Reset your network settings.
• Remove and re-insert your SIM card.
• Bring your phone into an Apple Store for repair.

10 common iPhone 7 problems and how to easily fix them

iPhone 7 problems, bugs and glitches: All you need to know about the problems, issues and annoyances you might experience – and how to quickly fix them.

The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus aren’t quite the redesigned flagships we were hoping for, but they’re still a terrific bit of kit.

Just like iOS 10 though, not everything is running smoothly from the get-go. If you’re having problems with your new phone, we might just able to help.

No doubt a few more niggles and problems will arise as people start to use the phones, so let us know if you’ve found anything specific you need help with.

My iPhone crashed when I received a text

A nefarious new text message is reportedly doing the rounds, whereby a message is sent that contains just three characters and is capable of crashing iPhones.

The text itself contains just a white flag emoji, a “0”, and a rainbow emoji, and will disable both the touchscreen and the physical buttons on the phone. It doesn’t work on the latest version of iOS, however, and in most cases the effects are only temporary.

If you want to avoid the whole thing you simply need to make sure you’re on the latest version of iOS by going to Settings>General>Software Update. You can also try blocking the number if you do receive a text, to make sure you’re not sent any more in the future.

I’m experiencing poor call quality

This is the latest issue to hit the iPhone 7, and the good news is that Apple appears to be aware of it.

The bad news? There’s no obvious fix, although some users have reported that simply lowering the volume on their phone improves the sound quality on their iPhone 7.

For what it’s worth, Apple’s official guidance is as follows:

“If the speaker on your iOS device doesn’t work as expected, follow these steps. Try again after each step:

Go to Settings > Sounds and drag the Ringer And Alerts slider to turn the volume up. If you hear sound from the speaker, follow the rest of these steps. If you can’t hear sound from the speaker, contact Apple Support. If your device has a Ring/Silent switch, make sure it’s set to ring. (If you can see orange, your device is set to silent.)”

My new Lightning EarPods are crashing!

This the latest problem to afflict iPhone 7 users and it’s really no surprise. Unlike the 3.5mm headphone jack we all knew and loved, connecting your headphones via the Lightning port relies on Apple’s software to function, so the fact that we’re still at such an early stage of iOS 10 is no doubt to blame for the borkage.

Specifically, users are reporting that the controls on the new EarPod headphones are freezing and leaving them unable to operate their tunes, with volume management, call answering and Siri activation among the victims of ‘EarPod-gate’.

Apple has finally issued an official guidance on this problem, saying it’ll be addressing the bug in one of its next software fixes. But what about in the meantime?

If your EarPods are crashing, the Cupertino-based company recommends a familiar solution – try turning it on and off again.

Or rather, try unplugging the EarPods and plugging them in again. This apparently may or may not fix the problem, either temporarily or for a bit longer than temporarily, while you wait for an actual fix.

Seriously, that’s the best Apple could come up with. It’s unclear if third-party Lightning headphones are affected in a similar way.

Why is my iPhone 7 making a hissing sound?

In the immediate aftermath of the iPhone 7’s launch, this was the other major issue to surface – a strange hissing sound reported by owners of the shiny new smartphone.

The good and bad news follows – it’s (probably) nothing to worry about.

According to multiple sources, the odd audio effect occurs when first restoring your iPhone , which means it’s probably down to the new A10 processor firing up during the reboot.

In other words, it’s a similar phenomenon to the common PC problem known as ‘coil whine’, which typically presents itself when a CPU is being heavily taxed for the first time.

Wait and the issue should gradually subside as your phone naturally lubricates its internals, but if your predicament is particularly severe, some users have said they’ve successfully procured a new handset via the AppleCare+ programme .

I can’t plug my headphones in!

If you’ve been living under a very large rock since the iPhone 7 was announced, and on a whim popped down your pre-order without really looking into it, you’ll notice a very common port is missing from your shiny new handset. The iconic headphone jack is no more, but try not to worry.

How do I charge my iPhone 7 and listen to music?

This is a tricky one – if the Lightning port is being taken up by your headphones, how do you listen to tunes and charge at the same time?

The first solution is of course to use those wireless buds. But there are other ways too.

Belkin is selling what it calls the ‘ Rockstar ’ (Because only a rockstar would possibly want to play music and charge simultaneously, duh) which plugs into the Lightning port and gives you two Lightning connections in return. We’d have preferred one Lightning and one 3.5mm jack, but hey-ho.

You could also pick up one of Apple’s ludicrously pricey docks (£49.99), which have a 3.5mm jack on the back and charge your phone too.

Neither are perfect solutions, but they work.

The Jet Black model scratches easily

While our eyes were instantly drawn to the matt black iPhone 7, Apple’s flagship colour is no doubt Jet Black. It’s proving popular too, with most stock seemingly already sold-out until November.

It’s got one major issue though, it scratches very easily. Aside from the many comments of people at the launch event saying that phones were already getting micro-abrasions on the back, Apple itself says in the small-print of it’s site that the Jet Black model might be better off in a case.

So that’s the only real advice; if you pick up a Jet Black iPhone 7, grab a case to go with it. Our best cases for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus should have you covered.

Why is my battery draining so quickly?

As with any new phone, you’ll likely experience fairly poor battery life in the first few days. You’ll be using it more, trying out all those fancy new features, sending a million GIFs in iMessage and installing a boat-load of apps. It’s just natural that it’ll drain faster.

I can’t buy the iPhone 7 I want – anywhere

This isn’t so much a problem with the iPhone 7, but more a problem that stems from the popularity of Apple’s flagship phone. Or, the Cupertino company might simply not have been able to manufacture enough phones.

Either way, it’s certainly tough to pick one up if you weren’t on the trigger and pre-ordered. The Apple Store implies if you order today then you’ll receive your unit in 2-3 weeks (it’s slightly less for the regular iPhone 7 model), unless you want the Jet Black version that won’t ship until November.

It’s worth looking at the networks too – we have all the best deals for iPhone 7 rounded up here – and high-end UK chain Selfridges is also selling the phone in store and online. Carphone Warehouse claims it’ll have stock of the smaller iPhone 7 on September 23, while it’ll be October 7 for the matt black iPhone 7 Plus.

How to change the intensity of Home button feedback

One of the more subtler changes for the iPhone 7 was the switch from a home-button that clicks to one that just gives the impression it’s clicking. Like the trackpad on the MacBook, the new iPhone button gives off a series of vibrations when you press it.

If this feeling is surreal, you can alter it. Head into Settings > General and you can pick between three different choices. With a stronger vibration being given up as you go higher.

Causes of Common iPhone 7 Problems

Some common iPhone 7 issues are caused by software bugs or app malfunctions. Others may be caused by physical obstructions or miscommunication between devices. The iPhone issue you're experiencing is dependent upon the underlying problem. A bit of troubleshooting is in order.

Basic iPhone 7 Troubleshooting Tips

Although each issue will have its own set of unique troubleshooting tips, you can solve general iPhone issues by:

• Performing a quick iPhone restart : A restart can often jump-start your iPhone back to health.
• Updating your iPhone's software : If you're not using the most current iOS, there could be a bug. Update your iPhone and try again.
• Resetting your iPhone's settings : As a last resort, you can reset your iPhone's basic settings or return your iPhone to factory settings if all else fails.

Resetting your iPhone to factory settings will cause you to lose all of your data. Only perform this after exhausting all of your options, including reaching out to Apple Support.

iPhone 7 Overheating

Your iPhone can overheat due to a number of factors, from overuse to being left in the hot sun. It can also get hot due to an issue with the iPhone's software or an app you're using. Believe it or not, your iPhone case may even be to blame, so there are a few things you can try when your iPhone is overheating .

Remove your iPhone's case. A heavy case may cause overheating. Remove it for a few days to see if this resolves your overheating issue.

Check to make sure iPhone apps aren't crashing in the background. Crashing apps can cause your iPhone to slowly overheat. Go to Settings > Privacy > Analytics > Analytics Data to see which apps crash most often.

Find a crashing app? Delete it and reinstall it . Or, delete it and find an alternative.

Check for apps that drain your iPhone 7's battery . You can find a list of these apps in your Settings under Battery . If there's an app draining the life from your iPhone, you'll see it. Delete it and find an alternative.

Check your network connection . Is your iPhone searching for a signal? This can cause overheating. Try turning your phone to airplane mode or switch off Wi-Fi to see if the heat is reduced.

Turn off background app refresh . When all of your apps continue to refresh at the same time, your iPhone 7's CPU can go into overdrive.

Make sure you're using an Apple-certified phone charger. If you're not, the charger may be defective, causing your iPhone to overheat.

iPhone 7 Camera Not Working

Blurry camera? Black screen when opening the camera app? An iPhone camera that refuses to work correctly may be caused by physical obstructions or software issues within the Camera app.

Remove your case and any attachments. A case might block your camera or cause images to look blurry. After removing cases and attachments, test the camera to see if the issue is solved.

Both the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus offer image stabilization. Metallic cases or lens accessories can interfere with this feature.

Clean your camera lens . Blurry cameras are often the result of dirty camera lenses. Use a microfiber cloth to dust off the lens.

Check the flash. If you're attempting to use the flash and it won't work, tap the lightning bolt and make sure your flash is set to On.

Toggle back and forth between rear camera and front camera. This simple function sometimes pulls the camera out of a lag or glitch.

Close the Camera app and reopen it. This might be all you need to jump-start your camera back to health.

iPhone 7 Microphone Not Working

Your iPhone 7 features four microphones: two on the bottom, one near the headphone jack and one by the speaker grill. If your microphone isn't working, an obstruction or a software glitch may be the cause.

Clean your microphones . Using a microfiber cloth or a soft toothbrush, gently clean the microphones on your iPhone 7. Obstructions such as dust can cause a muffled tone.

Remove any cases or attachments. These attachments may obstruct your microphones.

Disconnect Bluetooth devices . Bluetooth devices that are connected to your iPhone may lead you to believe they're not working. Disable any Bluetooth devices and then try your mic again.

Update the app you're using . If you notice your microphone isn't working with one particular app, try updating it to fix any software glitches.

Check app permissions. You can also check the app's microphone permissions. If an app doesn't have access to your microphone, it won't work. Go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone and toggle the switch to turn it on.

iPhone 7 Headphone Adapter Not Working

When you purchase an iPhone 7, you'll find a lightning-to-3.5mm adapter in your box that you'll need to use when plugging in wired headphones. An adapter may fail to work due to a dirty headphone jack, software issue, or a faulty adapter, but there are a few things you can try to fix headphone jack problems .

Connect another pair of headphones. The issue may not be your adapter at all. Try a different set of headphones to see if they work. If so, it's time to replace the others.

Use an Apple-certified adapter. If you're attempting to use an adapter you purchased from a third-party after misplacing your Apple-certified adapter, it may not work with your device.

Clean your headphone port. A dirty port full of dust and debris won't work properly. Use a can of compressed air to gently blow out the port. Or, run a soft toothbrush across the port.

Check your volume. It may be that your volume was turned down by accident. Use your iPhone buttons to increase the volume.

When you turn your volume up, does the pop-up box say headphones? If not, your headphones may not be fully connected. Try removing your headphones and putting them back in firmly.

Turn Bluetooth off . Your iPhone might be trying to play sound through another device connected through Bluetooth. Turn it off and try using your headphones again.

The same thing might be occur due to AirDrop. Disable AirDrop in your iPhone settings and try using your headphones again.

iPhone 7 Bluetooth Not Working

Does your Bluetooth refuse to pair? Does your iPhone not recognize your Bluetooth device? Bluetooth devices sometimes stop working after critical software updates or simply due to faulty devices. So, if your Bluetooth is not working , troubleshooting the problem might help.

Turn your iPhone Bluetooth off and back on . After updates, your iPhone Bluetooth may need a restart to work properly. Plus, you'll need to make sure your Bluetooth was on in the first place.

Move your device closer to your iPhone. If your Bluetooth device is too far away from your iPhone, it won't pair or work properly.

Disconnect Bluetooth device from other sources . If you're connected to your Bluetooth device from another computer or source, it may interfere with your iPhone pairing.

Restart your Bluetooth device. This step will vary depending on the device you're using. Check the device's user manual, conduct some research online, or call your device's manufacturer to learn how to restart the device.

Try connecting another Bluetooth device to your iPhone. To find out if the issue is with your iPhone or the device, try connecting another Bluetooth device. If it connects, the original device is at fault.

Clear Bluetooth connections . You may need to set your Bluetooth devices up again as if they were new. To do so, you must delete Bluetooth connections from your iPhone and set them back up again.

Reset your network settings . Network errors can wreak havoc on iPhone features such as Bluetooth. After a reset, you can try reconnecting your device.

Resetting your network settings with take your connections back to default. This means you'll lose your current Wi-Fi settings. Be prepared to re-enter your Wi-Fi information for connectivity.

iPhone troubleshooting: Common iPhone problems and how to fix them

It doesn't matter if you're on the latest iPhone running the latest version of iOS or on an older phone with aged software: "It just works" is an ideal. The reality is "it just works until it doesn't — usually when you need it the most." Like any complex and sophisticated machine, iPhone can cause you any number of problems. In most cases, though, iPhone troubleshooting is a straightforward affair. So, before you call Apple Support or visit your local Genius Bar, here are a few things you can try to get your devices and services "just working" again.

How do you restart, reboot, and recover your iPhone?

One of the best iPhone troubleshooting tips is a cliché for a reason. Sometimes merely restarting your iPhone can clear up problems that range from battery drain to bad Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to misbehaving apps. You can simply power down and power up or, if you have to, you can hard reboot.

Sometimes a reboot just isn't enough. If something has gone seriously wrong and you're either told to — or need to — put your iPhone into recovery or device firmware update (DFU) mode to completely re-install iOS, you have that option as well.

And if you don't want to reset everything but just one or a few things, you can do that too! It's a simple task to reset the phone's settings, remove network connections, erase content, zap the keyboard dictionary, rearrange the Home screen, or dump Location and Privacy data.

What if your iPhone won't charge, gets terrible battery life, won't shut down, or won't start up?

Restart iphone, very low battery, bad cable connection, broken charger or usb cord, obstructed/bad lightning connector, drained/dead battery/bad charging port, bad power button, bad display, bad logic board, dirty or corroded logic board connections, dirty antenna grounds, bad headphones/speakers, bad audio jack, iphone is paired to the original home button assembly, corrupted software, force restore mode, liquid damage mitigation needed, iphone 7 plus troubleshooting.

iPhone 7 Plus glass is shattered

Oh no! Your iPhone's glass did not survive your unintentional drop test!

Take a deep breath and see if your iPhone will turn on and operate normally. In most cases, the iPhone is still functional but now a cosmetic disaster. Unfortunately, the iPhone 7 Plus front glass and LCD are fused together and must be replaced as one piece.

iPhone is frozen or unresponsive

Even after furious button mashing and screen smashing, your iPhone 7 Plus doesn't respond.

Sometimes all it takes is a restart for the iPhone to become responsive again. To restart your iPhone when it is unresponsive, press and hold the volume down and power buttons until the Apple logo appears (~10 seconds).

It is possible for an iPhone to become unresponsive if the battery drops to an extremely low level. Plug the iPhone into your computer or wall charger and allow it to charge for at least 20 minutes before using it again.

iPhone 7 Plus will not charge

Plugging in your iPhone 7 Plus does not bring it life.

Check the USB cable for damage and dirt, especially at the ends. Then try using the wall charger, as this will provide greater power input than the computer/USB.

Try using different chords, chargers and different wall outlets to see if there is a problem with your charger, cord, or wall outlet.

Inspect the Lightning connector at the bottom of the iPhone for dirt, lint, and damaged pins. Clean out the connector very carefully with a tooth pick or soft toothbrush. If the lightning connector is broken, you will have to replace it.

iPhone will not turn on

You cannot get your beloved iPhone 7 Plus to turn on.

Plug your iPhone into your computer or wall adapter to charge. If the phone does not charge when connected, the phone likely has a dead battery or a bad charging port. Replace the battery ( using this guide here ) with a partially charged one and see if the phone will turn on. If not, there may be a power button or logic board issue. If the phone does turn on, plug it in and see if the charging indication comes on. If the phone says it is charging, then the lightning connector works, and the problem is either the old battery or the logic board.

If the power button doesn't seem to work, plug the phone into the wall or a computer and let it charge. If the phone turns on and has power, then there might be a problem with either the power button or the power button cable.

It is possible that it appears nothing is happening because the display is bad. If the iPhone sounds like it is working properly but nothing is visible, it is possible the display is bad and must be replaced. Unfortunately, the LCD and glass panel are fused together, and must be replaced as one unit. An easy way to test this is to turn the phone on and listen for a sound. Also, you can move the mute toggle switch back and forth to see if it vibrates. If it vibrates or you hear a sound but nothing displays on the screen, then the screen is most likely the problem. Try replacing it and see if the display is still black.

If nothing else works, your logic board is probably faulty and needs to be replaced. Now it is time to either replace it or diagnose if and what components are bad on the board and replace them, using microsoldering techniques. That is a whole 'nother beast!

"This accessory is not optimized for this iPhone" message

An error message appears as if you have connected an unsupported accessory to your iPhone.

Check the Lightning connector at the bottom of the iPhone for dirt, lint, and damaged pins. Clean out the connector very carefully with a tooth pick or soft toothbrush. Use high concentration isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) and a cotton swab to clean any debris that does not come off with a tooth pick or soft toothbrush. If the connector is broken, you will have to replace it.

After an iPhone has been submerged in a liquid, there may be some corrosion or debris on the logic board connections that cause this error message. Remove the logic board and clean all of the contacts with a soft cotton swab and high concentration isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%).

Weak or lost wireless connections

You have trouble connecting to a wireless network.

If your iPhone has been disassembled before, it's possible that finger oils were left on the grounding locations for the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth antennas. These oils will cause grounding issues for the antennas, which could lead to a weak signal or no connectivity at all. Be sure to clean all grounding points with an electronics cleaning solution before reassembling your iPhone to prevent grounding issues.

No audio or distorted audio through speakers or headphones

Your iPhone 7 Plus turns on and appears to work, but when you plug in headphones or speakers, the audio doesn't play properly.

It's unlikely your headphones or speakers are bad, but it's worthwhile to eliminate these as the source of your problem at the beginning. Try your iPhone with different sets of headphones and speakers just to make sure that the problem is with the iPhone and not an external device.

The most likely cause of audio output problems on an iPhone 7 Plus is a bad lightning connector. If you have determined that the problem does not lie in your external speakers, you should replace the lightning connector.

Touch ID nonfunctional after replacement

Following a home button replacement, Touch ID features stop working.

As a security feature, your home button's embedded Touch ID fingerprint sensor is uniquely paired to your iPhone's logic board at the factory. If the original home button assembly is replaced, damaged, or disconnected, Touch ID features will cease to function.

Restore iPhone 7 Plus

Your iPhone is behaving erratically or displays the text "Use iTunes to restore" on startup.

It isn't often that Apple gives specific directions about how to fix your problem! Restoring the iPhone 7 Plus will erase everything on it, so make sure everything on the iPhone is stored elsewhere prior to restoring. To restore, connect your iPhone 7 Plus to a computer with iTunes installed. Click "Restore" on the iPhone 7 Plus summary page (click on your iPhone icon on the left menu to find this page). Follow the directions to restore. If your iPhone 7 Plus displays the text "Please wait. Very Low Battery," leave it plugged in. This charges the iPhone enough to be able to restore. If the iPhone 7 Plus hangs on this screen for long periods of time, you may need a new battery.

If your iPhone 7 Plus is frozen with an Apple logo, or exhibiting some other software problem that prevents iTunes from recognizing it, you can force it into recovery/restore mode and then use iTunes to restore the software.

If the device is powered off, connect the iPhone 7 Plus to your computer via the USB Cable. Press down and hold the Sleep/Wake + Volume Down Button, until you see the "connect to iTunes" message in your screen. If you see an Apple logo but not the iTunes logo, keep holding the buttons. This will take around 10 seconds. iTunes should prompt you to restore the software. Follow the prompts and the instructions given above.

If the device is powered on, hold down both the sleep/wake and volume down buttons until the device reboots and displays the "Connect to iTunes" image (generally, 5-15 seconds).

iPhone has water or liquid damage

After an accidental spill or a drop in the sink, your iPhone no longer works correctly.

As soon as possible, perform the following:

• Immediately remove the iPhone from the liquid (if safe to do so). Minimize the length of time your device is in contact with liquid to prevent corrosive damage.
• Turn the iPhone off. (If it was off already, do not turn it on.)
• [Don't Put Your Device in Rice. Here's Why...|Skip the rice|new_window=true]. Contrary to what you may have heard, rice is not an effective or lasting fix for water damaged electronics.
• Liquid damage may complicate disassembly. Beware that some cables and connectors may be "adhered" to other components in unexpected ways.

At this point, inspect the interior of your iPhone and try to determine the extent of the liquid damage.

• Whew! You may have dodged a bullet. Check the water damage indicators, look around the ports and SIM card tray, and inspect the battery connector carefully for signs of liquid or corrosion.
• If you notice any sign of liquid intrusion, skip to the next section below.
• If everything looks bone dry, you might not need to do anything further. Give your phone a couple hours to air out, re-connect the battery, power it on, and test all functions. If you notice any problems, continue to the next section below.
• Follow the opening guide to begin removing components.
• As you remove each component, check it carefully for signs of liquid or corrosion damage. Wipe any liquid and/or corrosion away carefully with isopropyl alcohol and a clean, soft nylon brush, such as a toothbrush, and allow it to air dry.
• Continue disassembling until you no longer see any signs of liquid intrusion.
• Do not attempt to re-use a battery that has been in contact with any liquid.
• Power on your iPhone and test all functions. If you notice any problems, continue to the next section below.
• Follow the opening guide to take your iPhone apart completely.
• Clean each component, cable connector, and socket carefully with isopropyl alcohol and a clean toothbrush.
• Use the toothbrush to scrub visible corrosion and residue from the logic board. Clean all connectors, chips, and fuses.
• Repeat cleaning if necessary, or if traces of residue are still visible.
• For any particular function that fails, replace the associated component with a new part , and then re-test.
• If problems persist, a board-level repair may be necessary. We don’t yet have comprehensive guides for board-level repair, so you may wish to consult a microsoldering specialist for more options.

The familiar refrain of the IT pro has become something of a joke, but the fact remains that turning devices off and on again really does fix problems sometimes. It is the first thing you should try for a wide range of iPhone issues. Here’s how:

• For the iPhone X, XS, 11, 12, or 13 range, press and hold the power button and one of the volume buttons until the power slider appears on the screen. If you have an iPhone SE, 8, 7, 6, their S variants, or older, you only need to press and hold the power button.
• You should see a slider that says Slide to power off . Drag it from left to right and give your iPhone 30 seconds or so to turn itself off.
• To turn it back on, simply press and hold the power button until you see the Apple logo on the screen.

Many iPhone problems are caused by out-of-date software, so it’s worth checking to ensure you have the latest iOS version and that your apps are up to date. If you find that a particular iPhone app keeps crashing or freezing, an update will often resolve your issue. Here’s how:

• Go to Settings , General , Software Update , and see if there’s an update available.
• It’s usually best to allow your iPhone to update automatically by going to Settings , General , Software Update , Automatic Updates , and toggling on Download iOS Updates and Install iOS Updates .
• To make sure your apps are up to date, open the App Store, tap your profile icon at the top, and tap Update All .
• It’s usually best to allow your iPhone to update apps automatically too. You can do this by going to Settings , App Store , and toggling on App Updates .

Sometimes your iPhone doesn’t respond, or the touchscreen freezes up, making it impossible to turn off the regular way. If this happens to you, it’s time to try what Apple calls a force restart . Here’s how to do it on most modern iPhones, from the iPhone 8 to the iPhone 13:

• Start by pressing and quickly releasing the volume up button
• Now, press and quickly release the volume down button.
• Finally, press and hold the power button.
• When you see the Apple logo on the screen, you can let go of the power button.

If you have an iPhone 7, press and hold both the power button and the volume down button until you see the Apple logo. If you have an iPhone 6s, first-generation iPhone SE, or an older iPhone, press and hold the power button and the Home button until the Apple logo appears.

If you’ve had your iPhone plugged in or on the charger for a while (at least an hour) and it doesn’t seem to be charging, and you’ve tried a force restart (see above), here’s what to try next:

• Start by looking at the charging port to make sure there’s nothing stuck in there and no visible signs of damage. Be very careful when cleaning your phone . If you want to dislodge dirt in the charging port, use a wooden toothpick, cotton swab, and steady hand.
• The problem could be the charger or the cable. If there are visible splits or kinks in the cable or the charger has bent prongs, it’s time to recycle them and buy new ones. Try plugging your iPhone in with a different cable and charger, and use an outlet you know is working. Just make sure you use the right kind of charger .
• If the charging port on your iPhone is damaged or your wall charger isn’t working, you can always try using a wireless charger . Every iPhone since the iPhone 8 supports wireless charging.
• If none of these solutions work, then you'll need to head to an Apple Store and find out about your options for repair. You may be entitled to a free battery replacement. You can learn more in our guide on how to get a battery replacement for your smartphone .

It can be very frustrating when your iPhone refuses to connect to a Wi-Fi network, but it’s usually easy to fix. Here’s what to try:

• Check that your router is on and working. See if other devices in your home are still connected. If your Wi-Fi is completely out, then try unplugging your router and then plugging it back in, and make sure all the cables are connected properly.
• Go to Settings , Wi-Fi on your iPhone to ensure that it’s toggled on.
• Tap on your Wi-Fi network name to see if there are any issues, and make sure that Auto-Join is toggled on.
• If it still won’t connect, then go to Settings , Wi-Fi , and tap on your network name, then tap Forget This Network .
• Try turning your iPhone and your router off and on again, then go back to Settings , Wi-Fi, and tap to connect to your network, entering your password when prompted. Bear in mind your router will take a few minutes to start back up.
• As a last resort, go to Settings , General , Reset , Reset Network Settings . This will reset all of your Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings.

Whether you are trying to connect a Bluetooth speaker, an in-car system, or another device, problems with iPhones connecting to Bluetooth are very common. Here’s how to fix them:

• Start by making sure that your iPhone and Bluetooth accessory are fully charged, powered on, and close to each other.
• Read up on your Bluetooth device or system, make sure you know how the pairing process works, and make your device discoverable (sometimes you have to hold down a button).
• Go to Settings, Bluetooth on your iPhone, make sure it’s toggled on, look for the device you want to connect to in the list, and tap on it.
• You may have to enter a PIN or passcode.
• Some Bluetooth accessories use an app on your iPhone. If that’s the case, go to Settings , Privacy , Bluetooth, and make sure Bluetooth is turned on for the app.
• If a previously connected device doesn’t seem to be working, then try unpairing it. Go to Settings, Bluetooth on your iPhone and tap the info button next to the device in question, tap Forget This Device , then try pairing again.
• If you still can’t connect to your iPhone, try connecting to another phone or tablet to ensure the issue isn’t with your accessory or Bluetooth system. Sometimes there’s a limit to how many connections you can have, so refer to your Bluetooth device’s manufacturer to find out if this is the case and how you can delete old connections. • Try connecting a different Bluetooth device to your iPhone to see if that works.
• If the problem seems to be with your iPhone, and nothing so far has worked, it’s time to contact Apple support .

We all know the fear as you inspect your iPhone screen for cracks after a tumble. Broken or cracked screens are very common. Although your iPhone may still work, it’s a good idea to get the screen fixed as soon as you can to prevent injury or further damage. These are your options:

• Contact Apple and book an appointment to take your iPhone into an Apple Authorized Service Provider or the Genius Bar. You may have the option of scheduling an onsite repair where someone comes to your home or office. You can also mail your iPhone to a service center for repair, but that means being without your phone for a while. Apple’s official repairs are also very expensive. (It costs $279 for an out-of-warranty iPhone 13, for example.)
• Find a reliable third-party repair shop, like New York City’s iPhone doctor . Just make sure you do your homework and read reviews first. And, if possible, have them repair it in front of you.
• If you’re feeling handy, you could always try repairing it yourself. You can find detailed instructions and repair kits at iFixit and elsewhere. After a lot of pressure, Apple is finally making it easier to repair your iPhone , but most people probably shouldn’t attempt it—it’s easy to make a bad situation worse.
• You might be tempted to just trade in or sell your iPhone , but we highly recommend fixing it first. While some services will buy broken iPhones, the amount of money they knock off the payment for a broken screen far exceeds the cost of a repair.
• Whatever fix you go for, consider getting an iPhone case, screen protector, or both , so it doesn’t happen again.

If you find that your iPhone’s battery doesn’t last as long as it used to, you can check its health by going to Settings , Battery , Battery Health . This will show you what percentage of your battery’s initial charge capacity is left.

It’s easy to get a battery replacement, and it may even be free if your iPhone is still under warranty or you have AppleCare+, but you will need to visit an Apple Store or send your iPhone to a repair center. Whether you spilled coffee all over it or your iPhone took a dive into the toilet bowl, there’s a good chance it will survive, provided you take the right action. Every iPhone since the iPhone 7 has some kind of water resistance . If yours gets wet, turn it off immediately and remove as much liquid as you can with a clean towel. One of the reasons that Apple is so popular, and you paid a premium for that iPhone in the first place, is that the company offers a high standard of customer support. You should take advantage of that and contact Apple for help if you can’t find a fix on your own. Here’s how to go about it:

• Before you contact Apple, it can be helpful to write a detailed description of your problem and document everything you have already tried to fix it.
• It’s worth downloading the official Apple Support app . It offers lots of useful advice and troubleshooting tips and can connect you with a person when you need to speak to someone.
• The Apple Support website can guide you through some possible fixes and help you find the right number to call when you need to.
• If you want to go into an Apple Store or visit an authorized repair center, try this Apple website to locate one near you.

These fixes will cover many common iPhone problems. Even if you don’t think some of our suggestions relate to your issue, give them a try. You might be surprised. In the unfortunate event that your iPhone is still not behaving, here’s some advice on finding a fix yourself:

• Start by typing your problem into Google (or your preferred search engine) and be as specific as possible. Include your iPhone model and a description of the problem.
• Support forums are often the best places to find solutions. Look for a thread where someone has posted your exact problem and found a fix that worked. Try the Apple Support Forum , iPhone subreddits on Reddit , and forums on Apple-focused sites like iMore . You can also try creating a post of your own to ask for ideas on fixes.

The last resort for persistent problems is to factory-reset your iPhone , but this will wipe everything that’s on there. Please back up your iPhone before you consider this.

• Once you have backed up, go to Settings , General , Reset , Erase All Content and Settings . Confirm and then set your iPhone aside for a few minutes for the process to complete.
• If you restore your backup during the setup process and find that you still have issues, then try factory-resetting again, but this time, after it has been wiped and restarted, choose Set Up as New iPhone . If the issue is gone, it could be that an app or setting in your backup is causing the problem.

Ultimate Guide to Troubleshooting the Most Common iPhone Problems

Simply put: sometimes your iPhone doesn’t work the way you expect it, or doesn’t work at all. Often there are simple little fixes you can do. Less often it will be a serious problem that will require professional fixing. If your iPhone isn’t working, here’s a roundup of the most basic steps you can take.

Restart a problem app

Apps can get confused and not behave the way that they should. For example, on my iPad the Weather Channel app will sometimes fail to update, still showing the temperature and forecast from the last time I used it several hours earlier. The simple fix is to quit the app and start it again. Double tap the Home button to bring up the carousel of running apps, then slide up on the problem app to quit it. Then tap the app icon to restart it. If you have ongoing problems with an app, try checking our guide for what to do when your iPhone keeps freezing . Restart your iPhone

As with a desktop computer, sometime your iPhone can stop working correctly. And as with a desktop computer, the first thing you should try is restarting your iPhone. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until you get a message asking if you want to power off. Slide the button to confirm you want to do so. It will take a minute to power down. When it’s done, press and hold briefly the Sleep/Wake button as you ordinarily would to power on your iPhone.

“Force restart” your iPhone

The very first iPhone I had froze a few days after I got it. It didn’t respond to any touch or press. But having been a Mac user for years, I intuited it was simply a matter of forcing it to restart. If your iPhone freezes and doesn’t respond, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons until your iPhone shuts off then restarts. (Of course, the obvious first thing to do when your iPhone doesn’t respond is to make sure your battery is charged by plugging it in for a half hour and then trying again.)

Connect to iTunes if your iPhone gets stuck during startup

If you’ve restarted your iPhone and it gets stuck during the process, with the Apple logo being on the screen for a long time, you’ll need to connect it to a desktop computer that has the free iTunes software installed and booted up. Once it’s connected, then do a force restart as described above. However, don’t release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons when you see the Apple logo. Instead wait until you see the Recovery Mode screen. Then choose the Update option, and iTunes will attempt to reinstall iOS, but without erasing your data. If it takes more than 15 minutes, you may need to try a second time to force restart while connected to iTunes.

Download the latest version of iOS

Another important basic step if your iPhone is misbehaving is to download the latest version of iOS. Sometimes the behavior you’re seeing is a known issue, and Apple will have released a fix. Go to Settings > General > Software Update. If an update has been issued, you’ll see an indication that it’s available. 

Reset All Settings

If your iPhone is slow and/or seems to have various issues, another option is to Reset All Settings. Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. This clears all the settings, thereby getting rid of anything that might be problematic — but it retains your data. 

Reset and restore from a backup

In a worst-case scenario, if nothing else is working and your iPhone isn’t useable, you may need to reset your iPhone to its factory settings and then restore from a backup ( here's how to back up your iPhone ). First determine whether you have a current backup by going to Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage, and then tapping a device listed under Backups to see the date of your latest backup. Hopefully it will be fairly current. Then go to Settings > General > Reset and tap “Erase all content and settings.” Then proceed to “Choose backup,” and select from the list of available backups in iCloud.

Toggle Airplane Mode on when getting a connection failure

Sometimes your iPhone will fail to connect to your cellular data service or to a Wi-Fi router. Often the fix simply entails turning on Airplane Mode for 30 seconds to disconnect from wireless services and then turning it off. This will cause your iPhone to forget the previous connection and make a fresh one. To turn on Airplane Mode, slide up the Control Panel from the bottom of the home screen and tap the airplane icon. You can also try removing and then reinserting your iPhone’s SIM card.

Try “Forget This Network” for Wi-Fi issues

If you’re having Wi-Fi issues and toggling Airplane Mode doesn’t work, then go to Settings > Wi-Fi and select the particular network. Then tap Forget This Network. Then try reconnecting to it and signing in again.

Try “Renew Lease” for Wi-Fi issues

My desktop computer typically fails to connect to the internet at least a couple times a day, but I can immediately get it working again by renewing the IP number assigned to it. You can also renew the lease on your iPhone. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and tap the “i” to the right of the network name you’re connected to. Then tap Renew Lease.

Reset network settings

Another option if you’re having connection problems is to try resetting the network settings. This resets your Wi-Fi networks and passwords and your cellular settings (as well as VPN and APN settings). Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

Check battery usage if you're having excessive battery drain

If your battery drains faster than is typical, there are a couple things to try. A simple first step is to restart your iPhone, which can often fix the problem. The next step would be to go to Settings > Battery to see the details of which apps are using your battery. It not only shows the apps you’ve been actively using, but also how much energy is being drained by apps using your battery in the background. If an app is taking a lot of energy in the background, you might want to turn off "background app refresh" by going to General > Background App Refresh and turning off this feature, or by turning it off for specific apps. Fixed: iPhone 7 Microphone Not Working on Calls

• A number of iPhone 7 owners have had trouble with their microphones not working on calls.
• The problem may arise from a faulty audio IC, interference from a nearby Bluetooth device, outdated network settings, or some other cause.
• Fix the problem by disabling Bluetooth and forgetting aired devices, updating your iOS version, resetting your iPhone, or contacting Apple Support.

Is your iPhone 7’s microphone acting up or not working on calls? I can more than imagine the perplexed look on your face as you try to figure out why your friend can’t hear you over the phone.

It took me a bit of digging and several tries to find an effective solution to the problem. I’ll outline all the troubleshooting steps. First, here’s what I learned about the reason this microphone problem affects a lot of iPhone 7 models.

Why Is My iPhone 7 Microphone Not Working?

Your iPhone 7’s microphone may not work on calls because of a failed audio IC or other hardware damage. That’s the worst that could’ve happened. Otherwise, you’re probably suffering because of debris blocking the mic, a software bug from a recently-installed software update, or interference from nearby Bluetooth devices.

Other probable causes of the “iPhone 7 microphone not working on calls” problem are denied app permissions and outdated network settings.

Any of these problems could be causing a software disruption that prevents your iPhone’s microphone from picking up sounds. Alternatively, the hardware problems could have damaged the microphones, the audio IC, or some of the other components that provide audio input.

How Can I Fix My iPhone 7’s Faulty Microphone?

To fix an iPhone 7 microphone that’s not working on calls, you should disconnect all Bluetooth accessories and turn Bluetooth off, check for debris around the microphone openings, update the iPhone’s iOS version, or reset network settings.

If none of these work, test the microphones on the iPhone (primary, front and back) and ensure apps have permission to use the microphone.As a last resort, work around the problem using Bluetooth headsets while scheduling a service session with Apple Support or at an authorized service center.

I’ll show you how to perform each of these checks step by step in a minute. First, here are a few minor things to check:

• Check the microphone openings for visible obstructions. Sometimes, pocket lint or some other dirt may clog the microphone and prevent it from picking audio signals. Remove any debris gently using a toothpick or any other available tool.
• Restart your iPhone 7. This will 99% of the time resolve minor software glitches that could be interfering with the microphone. Simply press and hold the  side button  and slide the  Slide to Power Off  slider all the way to the right. Wait for one or two minutes and hold the side button to turn it on again.
• Remove any screen protector and phone case that could obstruct the microphone’s opening. Then, test the microphone to see if it works on a call now.

If none of these checks resolve the microphone issue, get started on the troubleshooting steps. Let’s begin by switching off Bluetooth and forgetting Bluetooth accessories.

1. Switch off Bluetooth and Forget Bluetooth Accessories

If you suspect that a Bluetooth accessory such as an headphone or speaker is the culprit in the iPhone 7 microphone issue, forget the accessory in Bluetooth settings. To do that:

If turning off Bluetooth still doesn’t solve the problem, conduct a microphone test to determine if it’s a carrier problem or your iPhone 7’s microphones are faulty.

2. Test the Microphones on the iPhone 7

The iPhone 7 has three microphones. The primary mic is situated to the left of the lightning port at the base of the iPhone. The front mic is housed within the speaker at the top of the screen. Finally, the back microphone, also known as the iSight mic, is found between the camera and the flash on the back of the iPhone. Let me outline how to test each microphone.

The Primary Microphone

To test the primary microphone:

1. Open the  Voice Memo  app.

2. Make a short recording while speaking into the base of the iPhone 7.

3. Play back the recording to see if you can hear yourself.

The Front Microphone

To test the front-facing microphone:

1. Open  Camera  and switch to the selfie lens by clicking the  camera chooser.

2. Record a short video of yourself speaking.

3. Play back the recording and listen to hear your voice.

The Back Microphone

Test the microphone on the back of the iPhone 7:

1. Open  Camera .

2. Select the back-facing camera by clicking the  camera chooser .

3. Record a brief video of yourself speaking loudly and clearly.

4. Play back the recording and see if you can hear your voice clearly.

If you don’t hear yourself or Voice Memo won’t start a recording, you likely have a hardware problem and should contact Apple Support to schedule a service appointment.

However, if all the microphones work properly, you may have yet to grant apps the permission to use the microphone. So, let’s check that next.

3. Check That Apps Have Microphone Access

If the microphone on your iPhone 7 is only not working in some apps, then you may not have granted the app permission to use the microphone. Check and do that by following these steps:

1. Open  Settings  and select  Privacy .

2. Choose  Microphone  to see a list of apps that have requested access to the microphone.

3. If the specific app has its toggle off, switch it back on.

This will enable the app to connect to the camera and use it on calls or to make recordings.

If all is normal on this front and your iPhone 7’s microphone is still not working, however, a software bug or outdated carrier configuration settings may be the culprit. Let’s learn more about and resolve the possibility of a software bug first.

4. Update the iOS Version

Many iPhone 7 owners have complained since as far back as 2018 that recent updates such as iOS 13 had left their devices unable to use the microphones. One customer noted that the speaker button is grayed out in calls, the voice memo app is not recording, and their iPhone fails to take dictations.

The Apple support says update created a problem in older iPhones  such as the iPhone 7 and 7+ where instructions were not being sent correctly to the microphone.

If the problem with your iPhone 7 started after you updated its iOS version, try updating to the latest version of iOS available. iOS updates usually contain fixes for known bugs so a software update may resolve your iPhone 7’s microphone issue. For an iPhone 7, that’s iOS 15.8.

1. Go to  Settings  and select  General .

2. Next, click  Software Update .

3. Click  Download and Install  if there are any available updates.

If the software update doesn’t resolve the problem, downgrading to your former version may be necessary. Follow the steps outlined in  this easy guide  to do that.

Next, let’s ascertain that the issue isn’t from your network carrier and consider next steps.

5. Reset Settings

Suppose the problem with your iPhone 7’s microphone turns out to be a carrier-related problem. You can resolve it by contacting the network service provider or resetting the iPhone’s network settings. You would know that the issue is carrier-related if the microphone works fine in other apps but you does not work in calls. Also, if text messages aren’t working, you have another indication of a carrier-related problem.

Here’s how to reset your iPhone 7’s network settings:

1. Open  Settings  and select  General .

2. Scroll down to  Transfer or Reset iPhone  and select it.

3. On the following screen, select  Reset .

4. Next, pick  Reset Network Settings .

4. Enter your passcode to authenticate and complete the operation.

If resetting network settings doesn’t work, and your carrier has informed that the issue is not from their end, reset all settings. Follow steps one to three as outlined for resetting network settings. Now, instead of picking Reset Network Settings, select  Reset All Settings . Authenticate with your passcode.

After performing the reset, reboot the iPhone and test the microphone. If it works, you can breath easy. You’ve finally fixed an iPhone 7 with a faulty microphone.

If the problem persists, however, you may need to schedule a service session with Apple Support or at an authorized repairs and service provider near you.

6. Contact Apple Support

Reach out to  Apple Support  to schedule a service session for hardware issues. Ensure your description of the problem is as detailed as possible. Include details such as when the problem started, which apps are affected, the troubleshooting steps you’ve taken, etc. They will be able to help you find a solution that rectifies the problem.

Before you’re able to go in or send your iPhone in for a repair, you may need a temporary workaround so you can continue making and receiving calls.

7. Work Around the Problem Using Bluetooth Headsets

Using Bluetooth headphones can give you back the power to make and receive voice and video calls on your iPhone 7 until the problem with the microphone is resolved. Wired headsets may not work if the problem is a faulty audio IC. So, use AirPods or other Bluetooth headphones to make and receive calls until you can get your unit repaired.

Final Words

Dealing with a faulty microphone is no joking matter. I had to rely on my AirPods for a long while. It wasn’t until I upgraded to iOS 15.7 that my iPhone 7’s microphone started working again.

The Secret Push That Could Ban TikTok

American lawmakers have tried for years to ban the video app TikTok over concerns that its ties to China pose a national security risk. Last week, they passed a law that might finally do it. Today, my colleague, Sapna Maheshwari, on the secret effort behind the law and what a ban would mean for the company’s 170 million American users.

It’s Tuesday, April 30.

So Sapna, tell me about this law that just passed that potentially bans the social media app TikTok. We’ve seen efforts in the past to rein in TikTok, but this one really seems like the most substantial yet.

It’s a huge deal. What this law really does is it puts the future of this hugely popular app with 170 million American users into question. TikTok has reshaped the way many people listen to music. It’s changed the way we cook. It’s made a whole different kind of celebrity.

But it’s never been able to shake these concerns around the fact that it has really close ties to China. It’s owned by a Chinese company, ByteDance. And lawmakers, for years, have been worried that the Chinese government could somehow use ByteDance and TikTok to get information on Americans or possibly spread propaganda.

President Trump tried to ban it in 2020. The State of Montana tried to ban this app last year. TikTok has largely survived those challenges, but this time it could actually be banned in the United States.

So let’s talk about this. Why did this effort succeed where the other ones failed?

So it’s an interesting story.

Here we go.

The committee will come to order.

And it really dates back to this hearing about a year ago that Congress had with Shou Chew, the CEO of TikTok.

Mr. Chew, you are here because the American people need the truth about the threat TikTok poses to our national and personal security.

Members of the committee, thank you for your time.

— TikTok has repeatedly said that it has addressed these national security concerns and that there’s no issue here. And you can hear that when Shou Chew testified.

Let me start by addressing a few misconceptions about ByteDance of which we are a subsidiary. ByteDance is not owned or controlled by the Chinese government.

He’s saying American investors are behind ByteDance.

Now, TikTok itself is not available in mainland China. We’re headquartered in Los Angeles and in Singapore.

And I myself am Singaporean. I live in Singapore.

The bottom line is this — American data, stored on American soil, by an American company, overseen by American personnel.

And we are actually going above and beyond what American technology companies do to keep things safe.

And I look forward to your questions. Thank you very much.

And is Congress convinced by that?

Congress is not convinced by that.

ByteDance is a Chinese company?

Well, ByteDance owns many businesses that operates in China.

Is it or is it not a Chinese company?

Congressman, the way we look at it, it was founded by Chinese entrepreneurs.

No, no, no, no. I’m not asking how you look at it. Fact, is it a Chinese company or not? For example, Dell is a company —

It was this really fiery, five-hour hearing, where Republicans and Democrats asked really contentious questions.

We do not promote or remove content at the request of the Chinese government. Will you repeat —

The question is, are you percent certain that they cannot use your company to promote such messages?

It is our commitment to this committee and all our users that we will keep this free from any manipulation by any government.

OK. If you can’t say it 100 percent certain I take that as a no.

There’s this underlying sense of distrust around the company and its ties to China.

I will remind you that making false or misleading statements to Congress is a federal crime.

I understand. Again, you can go on our platform. You will find that content.

And it becomes clear through the hearing that, across the board, Republicans and Democrats largely feel the same way.

Mr. Chew, I got to hand it to you. You’ve actually done something that in the last three to four years has not happened except for the exception of maybe Vladimir Putin. You have unified Republicans and Democrats.

So within weeks of this hearing, this small group of lawmakers gets together. And they say, let’s come up with a law that works where all the other ones have failed and actually make TikTok answer to its Chinese connections once and for all.

So tell me about this small group of lawmakers. Who are they?

So it starts with Republicans. Among them is Steve Scalise, one of the most powerful Republicans in the House. And a small group sort of works together for a few months, but they realize that in order to really make this law work, they’re going to need Democrats. So they end up working through this House Committee that’s focused on China and competition. And this is where the bulk of the work on this bill takes place.

And just to note, this is a really small group. There’s less than 20 key players who are working on this. And all throughout, they are keeping this very, very secret.

And why exactly are they keeping it secret? What’s the point of that?

So this group really wanted to keep this out of the eyes of TikTok, which has a huge lobbying presence in DC, and has successfully worked to kill bills that targeted TikTok in the past. And what they’re really doing is looking at all of the past efforts to either force a sale or a ban of TikTok, and trying to work their way through why those plans didn’t succeed and what they can do differently.

But while the lawmakers are working on this bill, something big happens that kind of changes the politics around it. And that’s October 7.

As the war breaks out and people start getting information about it, a lot of people are getting information about the Israel-Hamas War on TikTok, especially young people.

Social media algorithms seem to be driving some users towards increasingly divisive posts —

And there’s this big messy argument spilling out into living rooms and all over the internet, and, of course on TikTok. And it’s getting very heated. For instance, there’s this moment in the fall where a bunch of TikTok users start sharing this old manifesto.

I read Osama bin Laden’s “Letter to America.”

It’s wild, and everyone should read it.

Go read “A Letter to America.” Seriously, go read it.

That was actually written by Osama bin Laden, defending the 9/11 attacks and criticizing the United States’ support of Israel. TikTok users start trying to tie it to the modern day conflict.

Reading this letter, it becomes apparent to me that the actions of 9/11 were all just the buildup of our government failing other nations.

The way this letter is going viral right now is giving me the greatest sense of relief. Now it’s all coming to light because of Palestine.

And there’s these accusations that TikTok may be promoting one side of the conflict over the other. And a couple of researchers look at hashtags around Palestine, and they say that the data they pulled shows that TikTok is showing way more pro-Palestine videos and not so much for Israel. And this sets off huge alarm bells for this small group of lawmakers.

But isn’t that just a function of the fact that TikTok, at this point, is the public square in the United States for young people? I mean, this is what young people were talking about, and this is where they’re doing the talking.

TikTok has pushed back really forcefully against these accusations. They said that Gallup polls show that young people view Israel differently than older generations. They say that they’re not the ones influencing what people post, that the hashtags and the videos are a reflection of the user base and nothing that they’re doing to influence.

But for lawmakers, this doesn’t really make their concerns go away. Instead, this conflict shows them how TikTok could be used to spread propaganda. It made lawmakers feel that TikTok could be really dangerous when it comes to shaping the views of Americans on foreign policy, on US elections. And what it also does is, it provides this driving force to this group that’s drafting this bill. And they suddenly see that this might be a way to bring more people into their effort.

And so heading into November against this backdrop, they even bring in the White House and the Justice Department to help work on this bill. And with the White House, they want to make sure that this is a bill that the president will support. And they work with the Justice Department to shore up the language in the bill to help defend against court challenges.

Because the Justice Department, of course, would be the one that would have to defend the bill, right?

That’s exactly right. And so they’re trying to make it as rock solid as possible so that they can win in court when TikTok challenges this law. And so March rolls around, and they decide that it’s time to unveil this bill that they’ve been working on for close to a year.

The battle over TikTok on Capitol Hill is intensifying.

This morning, House lawmakers have agreed unanimously to move a bill to a full floor vote.

And TikTok is caught completely flat footed. They didn’t see this coming. And this is just what the group wanted. So TikTok has this army of lobbyists that’s suddenly scrambling. And they go into damage control mode. They start reaching out to members of Congress.

This app is so much more than just an app for dumb TikTok dances.

They fly a group of TikTok stars and small businesses to come to DC —

This is a life-changing apps.

— and lobby on the steps of the Capitol and meet with lawmakers.

Standing up here with all these amazing TikTokers behind me is a complete honor, and every single one of them would voice their opinion just like this. This is how we feel. This has to stop.

They set up interviews between these TikTok creators, as they’re known, and big TV shows and news programs. And they’re doing everything they can to fight against this bill before it goes any further. And then they decide to do something unusual, which is use TikTok itself to try and derail this bill.

How exactly do they do that?

So days after this bill is announced, a ton of TikTok users get a message when they open the TikTok app that basically says, call Congress and tell them not to ban TikTok.

Hmm. OK. So like, literally this window comes up and says, call Congress. Here you go.

Exactly. You can enter your zip code, and there’s a button that appears. And you can press it, and the call goes straight to your representative.

So offices are quickly overwhelmed by calls. And TikTok sent out this message to users on the same day that a House committee is going into vote on this bill and whether to move it forward. And so the stunt happens. They go into vote, and they come out, and it’s 50 to 0 in support of the bill.

One of the representatives who worked on the bill said that this stunt by TikTok turned a lot of no’s into yeses and yeses into, quote, “hell yeses.”

[LAUGHS]: so the whole episode sounds like it actually backfired, right? Like, TikTok’s stunt essentially just confirmed what was the deepest fears of lawmakers about this company, that the app could be used to influence American politics.

That’s definitely how a lot of lawmakers viewed it. And when this bill is brought to the full House a week later, it passes by an overwhelming majority. And weeks later, it passes in the Senate as part of a broader aid package. And on Wednesday, it’s signed into law by President Biden.

But now the question is, what does it mean? Like, how will this actually work? And how will it affect the tens of millions of Americans who use TikTok every day?

So Sapna, now that Biden has signed this bill, what does it actually mean in practice for TikTok? What does the law do?

So the law is really trying to push ByteDance, the company that owns TikTok, to sell to a non-Chinese owner. And the company basically has nine months for this sale to happen. There’s an option for President Biden to add another three months to that clock. And if the company doesn’t find a buyer or refuses to be sold, it will be banned.

And what would a ban actually mean, Sapna? I mean, people would still have the app on their phones, right? So it wouldn’t disappear overnight.

Yeah, no one’s coming to pick up your phone and to forcibly delete this thing. What the law says is that app stores and web hosting services wouldn’t be allowed to carry TikTok anymore. So basically, it would kind of die a slow death over time, where it wouldn’t be updated and just kind of peter out.

So the bottom line here is that the clock has started on this potential sale, right? They have 12 months to find a buyer. So what are the obstacles here? I mean, it sounds pretty ferociously complicated.

There’s a ton of challenges here. And it’s a very messy choose-your-own adventure. So one of the first big questions is who could buy this?

ByteDance and TikTok are private. We don’t know their financials. But analysts estimate that it will cost tens of billions of dollars. That narrows the buying pool pretty quickly. And a lot of the companies that could afford to buy it, like Meta, the owner of Facebook, or Google, which owns YouTube, would probably be kicked out of the running because they are simply too big. Regulators would say, you already own these big apps. You can’t possibly add this to your stable.

There’d be a monopoly concern there.

Exactly. And then, there’s a lot of questions around how this would work, technically. ByteDance and TikTok are very much global organizations. You have the CEO in Singapore. They have huge operations in Ireland. They have this big workforce in the US. And of course, they do have engineers in China.

So how do you extract all those things, make it all work? It’s a very big international transaction.

And then there is the chance that the Chinese government blocks this sale and says, you cannot do this, ByteDance. We will not allow it.

So Sapna, how does that actually work, though, in terms of China? I mean, can China actually just ban the sale of this company? I mean, it is a private company after all, right?

Well, here’s one way it could work. The Chinese government could block the export of TikTok’s algorithm. And let me explain that in kind of plain English.

They could basically block the technology that fuels the TikTokiness of this app, the recommendations, the magic of it, why you see what you see when you’re looking at TikTok.

TikTokiness, is that an adjective?

That is now an adjective.

[LAUGHS]: Nice.

And there’s a chance that Beijing could say, hey, you can’t export this technology. That is proprietary. And if that happens, that suddenly makes TikTok way, way less valuable.

So the Chinese government could let the sale go through potentially, but as a kind of an empty shell, right? The thing that makes TikTok TikTok, the algorithm, wouldn’t be part of the company. So that probably isn’t very appealing for a potential buyer.

Exactly. And I mean, the role of the Chinese government here is really interesting. I’ve talked to experts who say, well, if the Chinese government interferes to try and block a sale of this app, doesn’t that underscore and prove all the concerns that have been expressed by American lawmakers?

If you’re worried about China being in control of this thing, well, that just confirmed your fears.

Exactly. And I mean, it’s an interesting thing that ByteDance and TikTok have to grapple with.

So bottom line here — selling TikTok is quite complicated, and perhaps not even possible for these reasons that you’re giving, right? I mean, not least of which because the Chinese government might not allow the algorithm to leave the country. And that’s not something that the US Congress has a lot of control over.

So is this law fundamentally just a ban, then?

That’s what TikTok is calling it. Right after this bill was signed into law on Wednesday —

Make no mistake, this is a ban, a ban on TikTok and a ban on you and your voice.

— Tiktok’s CEO made a TikTok — what else?— that explained the company’s position.

Because the freedom of expression on TikTok reflects the same American values that make the United States a beacon of freedom.

He actually argued that TikTok reflects American values.

TikTok gives everyday Americans a powerful way to be seen and heard. And that’s why so many people have made TikTok part of their daily lives.

And he said that this law infringes on the First Amendment free speech rights of Americans who love it and who use it every day.

The facts and the Constitution are on our side, and we expect to prevail again.

So it’s very clear that TikTok plans to challenge this law in court. And the court fight to follow will determine the fate of TikTok’s future in the US.

So is that First Amendment argument that the TikTok CEO is making here going to work?

Nobody wants to put money on that. I mean, the company is really approaching this with the idea that the First Amendment rights of Americans are being infringed on. But if you remember, the government has been working on this law. They’ve been anticipating those challenges. And they can justify an infringing of First Amendment rights in certain cases, including with national security concerns. And so it’ll be up to a judge on whether those concerns pass muster and justify this sale and even a potential ban of TikTok.

Got it. So TikTok will argue free speech, First Amendment. And the government will counter by saying, look, this is about China. This is about America’s national security interests.

That’s right. And the legal experts that I’ve spoken with say this is a really big and sticky area of the law, and it’s a huge case. And they really think that this will go to the Supreme Court, regardless of who wins in the first round of this.

So where does that leave the millions of Americans who use TikTok, and many of them, of course, who earn a living on the platform?

I mean, it’s really uncertain what happens now with the company, and the clock has started ticking. When I’ve looked at TikTok and looked at videos from users —

This is about the impending TikTok ban. And it just triggered me so much. It makes my blood boil, and I have to get this out there.

There’s a lot of shock —

The most success I’ve had has been here on TikTok, and now they’re trying to take it away.

This is so stupid!

— and anger.

You can’t ban apps! You can’t ban things from people!

People are confused.

Word on the street is that in the next 9 to 12 months, TikTok could be banned.

And they’re also caught a bit off guard, just because there have been these years of efforts to do something about TikTok. People on the app have been hearing about a TikTok ban, really, since 2020.

The government can take away a literal app on our phones, and we’re supposed to believe we’re free?

A few TikTokers have said, how can this be the thing that the government is pushing through so quickly?

Can we stop funding a genocide? No. Can we get free COVID tests? No. Can we stop killing the planet? No. Can we at least watch videos on an app of people doing fun things and learn about the world around us? No.

So there’s this sense of distrust and disappointment for many people who love this app.

We got rid of TikTok. You’re welcome. Protecting you from China. You know that phone was made in China. Ah!

And I think there’s also this question, too, around what about TikTok makes it so harmful? Even though it has increasingly become a place for news, there’s plenty of people who simply use this app for entertainment. And what they’re seeing out of Washington just doesn’t square with the reality they experience when they pull out their phones.

And I wonder, Sapna, I mean, just kind of stepping back for a second, let’s say this ban on TikTok succeeds. If it goes through, would Americans be better off?

It depends who you ask. For the users who love TikTok, if it actually disappeared, it would be the government taking away a place where maybe they make money, where they get their entertainment, where they figure out what to read or what to cook next. To free speech advocates, this would be dystopian, unheard of for the government to crack down on an app with such wide usage by Americans.

But for the American political class And the National security establishment, this is a necessary move, one that was years in the making, not something that was just come up with on the fly. And ultimately, it all comes down to China and this idea that you can’t have a social media app like this, a source of news like this, that is even at all at risk of being influenced by the Chinese government and our greatest adversaries.

Hi, this is Sharon Otterman reporting for “The New York Times.”

00 PM deadline for protesters to clear out of the encampment at the center of Columbia University has come and gone, and there’s still quite a large contingent inside the encampment.

But Monday’s warning seemed only to galvanize the Columbia protesters and their supporters.

And hundreds of students and others from around the campus have come out to support them. They are currently walking around in a picket around the encampment.

Hundreds of students, standing for or five people deep, encircled the encampment in a show of solidarity. They were joined by members of the Columbia faculty.

There’s also dozens of faculty members, who are prepared to stand in lines in front of the main entrance to the encampment, in case Public Safety or the NYPD move in. But as of 2:00, there was no sign of that happening.

Then, on Monday evening, Columbia announced it had begun to suspend students who had failed to leave the encampment. It was unclear exactly how many students had been suspended.

iPhone 7 Repair Program for "No Service" Issues

Apple has determined that a small percentage of iPhone 7 devices may show "No Service" in the status bar (even if cellular coverage is available), due to a component that has failed on the main logic board.

These affected units were manufactured between September 2016 and February 2018 and sold in China mainland, Hong Kong, Japan, Macao, and the U.S. See below for iPhone 7 model numbers that are covered in this program.

If your device exhibits the symptom described above, Apple will repair your device, free of charge. Your iPhone will be examined prior to any service to verify that it is eligible for this program. This program only applies to iPhone 7.

Apple will be contacting customers via email who may have paid for a repair related to this issue to arrange for reimbursement. If you believe you paid for a repair related to this issue, and have not received an email from Apple by the end of March 2018 , please contact Apple .

Below are the three model numbers that are eligible for this program. You can find the model number on the back of your iPhone 7.

Service Process

Choose one of the service options below to have your iPhone 7 repaired. In all cases, your iPhone will be sent to an Apple Repair Center for service.

• Find an Apple Authorized Service Provider .
• Make an appointment at an Apple Retail Store .
• Contact Apple Technical Support .

Note: Wireless carrier partners are not participating in this program.

Before service, backup your iPhone to iTunes or iCloud. Learn more about preparing your iPhone for service .

If your iPhone 7 has any damage which impairs the ability to complete the repair, such as a cracked screen, that issue will need to be resolved prior to the service. In some cases, there may be a cost associated with the additional repair.

Apple may restrict or limit repair to the original country or region of purchase.

This Apple program doesn't extend the standard warranty coverage of the iPhone 7.

The program covers affected iPhone 7 devices for 4 years after the first retail sale of the unit.
