Interior Architecture Masters Theses

• Master of Arts (MA) in Adaptive Reuse, a one-year+ program

• Master of Design (MDes) in Interior Studies / Adaptive Reuse, a two-year+ program

• Master of Design (MDes) in Interior Studies / Exhibition + Narrative Environments, a two-year+ program

Both programs take an innovative and progressive approach to addressing design issues intrinsic to the reuse and transformation of existing structures. US News & World Report and Design Intelligence have both ranked RISD’s Interior Architecture programs among the top in the country.

Each MA candidate produces a final project that begins with a research component in the fall and evolves into a studio/design project in the spring. MDes candidates demonstrate competency through self-directed Degree Projects that include a seminar on theory, a research component and a studio component. Each DP focuses on the transformation of an existing structure of their choice in the city of Providence. All MA and MDes candidates also participate in the RISD Graduate Thesis Exhibition , a large-scale public show held annually.

Practice Research PhDs in Interior Design

Profile image of Suzie Attiwill

2018, Proceedings of the 1st Annual Design Research Conference (ADR18) The University of Sydney 27 – 28 September 2018

This paper attends to the nature of PhDs in interior design and with a particular focus on practice research. While there is a growing number of practice PhDs in the discipline, the number is relatively small compared to those in architecture. Current design research happening within interior design is research about and for as distinct from research in practice and through practising. Interior design as a practice is not adequately defined by the production of artefacts – such as products or buildings – so much as the design of relations between people and space in terms of physical, social and psychological parameters. Conditions of experience, subjectivity, atmosphere and affect are critical concerns that introduce questions of value and evidence and problematize notions of objectivity and subjectivity. The impetus and argument underpinning this paper is one of advocacy for the practice research PhD in the discipline and the value of the contribution that practice research in the discipline can make more broadly.

A canon can be defined as a collection of works deemed significant for a particular practice at a point in time; as a repository of those works and as a transmitter of this knowledge through images and words. Writing on the architectural canon, Miriam Gusevich observes that ‘the significance and status of a building as architecture is not dependent on some pre-established set of attributes, on some essential features, but on its status as a cultural object established through critical discourse’ [1]. Are there canonical interiors; spaces that have influenced the practice of interior design more than others? Or does the nature of this multidisciplinary practice make a canon, as it is known from architecture, impossible? Undesirable, even? The focus of this paper is a forum titled What’s in a canon? The state of interior design at the beginning of the 21st century. The forum was held in Melbourne, Australia on 17 October 2006 and invited editors of Australia’s design media, academics, graduates and interior design practitioners to respond to the provocation: ‘What’s in a canon?’ The question had two potential readings in this context: to question and evaluate the value of a canon for interior design; and as an invitation to identify examples of interior design which are significant at this point in time to the practice of interior design. It should be noted that there was not an underlying assumption that there should be a canon. This paper will analyse the debates, discussion and interiors offered at the forum. In the process, it will consider the design of interiors where the concept of interior is re-posed and in so doing, pose the question of what a history and theory of interior design could be and what kind of platform for practice might be produced. It is hoped that it will provide impetus for new ways of thinking and designing interiors. Keywords: canon, interior, design history/ theory, architecture, practice [1] Gusevich, M. Perspectives on Architectural Design Research What Matters - Who Cares - How

Simon Twose

Architectural design research is a multi-faceted and rapidly developing field. From established authors to emergent voices, from digital design to curating, this collection of diverse and well-crafted essays forms a wonderful introduction to the range of approaches currently being taken in this lively subject area. Through its three-pronged enquiry into 'what matters? who cares? and how?' the volume also provides sustained and critical analyses of some of the fascinating tensions at play in an area, which can be located between thinking and making on the one hand, and rigour and creativity on the other, as well as the sometimes divergent demands of professional design and academic research." Jane Rendell, The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, London Perspectives on Architectural Design Research is a collection of short essays, projects and edited transcripts that offers current perspectives on design research in architecture and aligned disciplines. Contributors include international figures Don Bates, Richard Blythe, Nat Chard, Murray Fraser, Dorita Hannah, Jonathan Hill and Vivian Mitsogianni. What emerges from the multiple perspectives is that contemporary design research-transdisciplinary, multi-scalar and concerning place, people, space and time-provides a collective and subtle mechanism that is propositional and transformative. The shared optimism of the contributors is that this propositional mode of research can be of catalytic value for contemporary culture and society.

The IDEA 2012 Inaugural Research Exhibition An Interior Affair: a State of Becoming was a pilot to test the perceived ambiguity of the requirements provided by Australia's Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) and New Zealand's Performance-Based Research Fund (PBRF) for creative works to be recognised as research through exhibition. A peer-reviewed exhibition model was piloted for interior design/interior architecture in order to provide appropriate quality assurance processes for creative works (See online interactive living archive: http://www.interiorbecomings.com/). A paper (see refernce below) outlining the model was presented at the IDEA 2012 symposium. In summary: 16 exhibitions (23 designer-researchers from United Kingdom, United States, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia). Exhibition feedback: 'The exhibition proved that the physical experience of creative works [artefacts / installations] and the coming together of researchers and viewers adds an important dimension to research, its formats, their communication and exchange of ideas' (personal communication exhibition attendee). Canyon is a project in experimental design process that extends ideation through drawing, via a novel hybrid of hand sketches, soundscapes and virtual reality (VR). The inspiration for the project is the dynamic undersea landscape of Kaikōura Canyon, Aotearoa, New Zealand. The experiment draws atmospheric qualities from the unseen topography and vast body of water of the canyon, recently jolted by huge forces in the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake. The ominous scale and power of this submarine landscape is distilled through hybrid architectural drawing, merging presences within drawing with those in landscape. The outcome of the first phase of the Canyon project is a mixed media installation exhibited at the Palazzo Bembo in the XVI Venice Biennale. This paper reflects on the Biennale installation, locating its contribution to architectural design research in terms of experimental process. Drawing’s capacity to observe and distil intangible phenomena is augmented by the affordance of VR and spatial soundscapes. This triggers a discussion of drawing’s active role in knowledge generation, intersecting with research into design as a non-linear and multi-factorial research methodology in architecture and art practice disciplines. Canyon also opens up critique of the traditional view of landscape and its relation to architecture. It alludes to less picturesque ways in which landscape and architecture might intersect, drawing instead from landscape’s intangible, scalar and material presence. The unseen canyon landscape is used as a site to provoke and test these arguments and we highlight contingent connections to related areas of design research. In the Canyon project, drawing is expanded as a hybrid medium, able to research architectural presences through multiple platforms, and the marine landscape, as a poetic drawn through this hybrid technique, is reoriented as a powerful influence in architecture.

The Beaux-Arts programme was structured around a series of anonymouscompetitions that culminated in the grand prix de ‘l'Académie Royale’, more wellknown as the ‘Grand Prix de Rome’, for its winner was awarded a scholarship and aplace at the French Academy in Rome. During the stay in Rome, the ‘pensionnaire’would be expected to regularly send his work in progress back to Paris. Contestantsfor the Prix were assigned a theme from the literature of Classical Antiquity; theirindividual identities were kept secret to avoid any suspicion of favour. These competitions ensured that the fundamental hierarchy of the members of theacademia (the teachers and juries: who defined what good art and architecture was)and those that would ascend to it (the students: who were prized and hence were thegood artists and architects) and perpetuated a secular way to ascend to stardom. The use of competitions in the traditional ‘studio’ class is still a current practice inuniversities. The class is provided with a ‘live’ project or a model case study problem, asite and a context, a fixed timetable, and each student is expected to research inarchitecture in order to present (using predetermined models and mediums) his finalconclusions (statements). Each personal architectural research is in fact subjected toan ‘informal’ (unstated) merit competition (were the teachers take the part of clients, sponsors and juries), to a peer evaluation, in order to prove its author’s right to, stepby step, become a graduated architect. The research is validated by the competitionand assures the originality of the research, its significance and rigour. There are of course mixed feelings towards competitions by different parts -architects; clients; juries or sponsors – and in face of personal past experience. Yet, itis undeniable the role and value of competitions in the process of generating aqualitative built environment. In general, competitions can bring out the best inpeople and are a way to achieve excellence in design. It can be stated that a largemajority of competitions is experienced daily either as users or as passers-by sincemost public buildings in Europe are subjected to competitions procedures. Therefore, along their professional practice, licenced architects outside the academiaand in praxis, seem to continue a personal architectural research within professionalarchitectural competitions. There are evidences that, besides the investment indeliberate or improvised practice’s business strategies, architects use competitions asfundamental research opportunities. So I intend to put forward that competitions served once (and still do) as a specificway of peer evaluating the architectural research in academia. Architecturalcompetitions are in fact a time and a space were academia and praxis connect andmay, to certain extent, constitute prove of Schon’s research-in-action and Till’sevidence of “architecture [as] a form of knowledge that can [, is] and should bedeveloped through research”.

In response to changes in both the practice of architecture and changes in terms of architecture's field of operation: the global economic, political and cultural context of its production, the following paper proposes to re-examine the inherited unit system of the graduate educational M.Arch design studio. Contrary to 'alternate modes of practice' that propose in critiquing the profession, an abandonment of the discipline of architecture, this paper instead calls for a clarified return in the educational context to architecture's core material an spatial skill set redirected relative to the animating diagrammatic condition that since the 19th century has relied on architecture's capacities in material and organisational experimentation to build cities.

Fourth International Conference on Architectural Research by Design [ARbD'14): Unifying Academia and Practice through Research

Since 1648, with the birth of the ‘École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts’ in Paris, the education of an artist, and later of an architect, has been based on the transmission of symbolic capital by masters to pupils under an organized system of implicit professional knowledge, with a continuous use of competitions (Kostof, 1995, 2000; Malacrida, 2010). The Beaux-Arts programme was structured around a series of anonymous competitions that culminated in the grand prix de ‘l'Académie Royale’, more well known as the ‘Grand Prix de Rome’, for its winner was awarded a scholarship and a place at the French Academy in Rome. During the stay in Rome, the ‘pensionnaire’ would be expected to regularly send his work in progress back to Paris. Contestants for the Prix were assigned a theme from the literature of Classical Antiquity; their individual identities were kept secret to avoid any suspicion of favour. These competitions ensured that the fundamental hierarchy of the members of the academia (the teachers and juries: who defined what good art and architecture was) and those that would ascend to it (the students: who were prized and hence were the good artists and architects) and perpetuated a secular way to ascend to stardom (Deamer, 2013; Lo Ricco & Micheli, 2003; Tenreiro, 2010). The use of competitions in the traditional ‘studio’ class is still a current practice in universities. The class is provided with a ‘live’ project or a model case study problem, a site and a context, a fixed timetable, and each student is expected to research in architecture in order to present (using predetermined models and mediums) his final conclusions (statements). Each personal architectural research is in fact subjected to an ‘informal’ (unstated) merit competition (were the teachers take the part of clients, sponsors and juries), to a peer evaluation, in order to prove its author’s right to, step by step, become a graduated architect. The research is validated by the competition and assures the originality of the research, its significance and rigour. There are of course mixed feelings towards competitions by different parts - architects; clients; juries or sponsors – and in face of personal past experience. Yet, it is undeniable the role and value of competitions in the process of generating a qualitative built environment. In general, competitions (Collyer, 2004; Lipstadt, 1989, 2010; Nasar, 2006; Spreiregen, 1979; Strong, 1976, 1996; Tostrup, 1999, 2010) can bring out the best in people and are a way to achieve excellence in design. It can be stated that a large majority of competitions is experienced daily either as users or as passers-by since most public buildings in Europe are subjected to competitions procedures. Therefore, along their professional practice, licenced architects outside the academia and in praxis, seem to continue a personal architectural research within professional architectural competitions. There are evidences that, besides the investment in deliberate or improvised practice’s business strategies, architects use competitions as fundamental research opportunities (Guilherme & Rocha, 2013). So I intend to put forward that competitions served once (and still do) as a specific way of peer evaluating the architectural research in academia. Architectural competitions are in fact a time and a space were academia and praxis connect and may, to certain extent, constitute prove of Schon’s (Schön, 2003) research-in-action and Till’s (Till, 2005, 2011, 2012) evidence of “architecture [as] a form of knowledge that can [, is] and should be developed through research”.

Every Sunday, groups of Foreign Domestic Helpers collectively create informal territories within the urban fabric of Hong Kong’s Central Business District. Foreign Domestic Helpers are migrant workers living in Hong Kong who are legally bound to live in their employers’ homes. They work six days a week, and their duties and lifestyles are dictated by their employers, making them one of the most marginalised occupational groups in the city. Every Sunday – their day off – Foreign Domestic Helpers gather in public en masse to exercise freedom outside of their contractual confinement. In Hong Kong’s CBD these weekly assemblies of Filipino workers disrupt the city’s hegemonic spaces of financial capital. Various urban interior and exterior spaces – shop fronts, footpaths, elevated walkways and atriums – are appropriated and transformed with makeshift cardboard constructions. Hong Kong’s public-private zones are augmented into temporary domesticised places where the migrant workers socialise, rest, eat, groom, send packages, protest, dance and preach. At first glance, the Foreign Domestic Helpers’ occupation of public space may appear chaotically disordered, or an ‘ethnic spectacle’. Closer analysis reveals that this ritualised inhabitation has a unique ecology; it is a temporary but repeated socio-spatial system that produces a collective culture of solidarity, resistance and resourcefulness. Drawing upon ethnographic observations, interviews, photographs and spatial analysis, this paper explores the socio-political and cultural implications of this informal occupation. It demonstrates how Foreign Domestic Helpers are much more than docile subjects of domestic labour, rather, they are actors with agency, operating in an intermediate and mutable spatial zone, somewhere between the private and public sphere.

Literature Review

What is a Literature Review?

It is…. a systematic and critical analysis of the literature on a specific topic. It describes trends, quality, relationships, inconsistencies and gaps in the research; and it details how the works enhance your understanding of the topic at large.

It is NOT…. simply an annotated bibliography that summarizes and/or assesses each article. There is not one, correct way to approach and write a literature review. It can be a stand-alone paper or part of a thesis/dissertation. Format and requirements can vary between disciplines, purpose and intended audience.

A literature review is an overview of existing literature (books, articles, dissertations, conference proceedings, and other sources) in a particular scholarly area. With a lit review, you will:

  • Gather information about your topic, including the sources used by others who have previously conducted research
  • Find out if your specific research question has already been answered
  • Find out what areas or perspectives have not yet been covered by others on your topic
  • Analyze and evaluate existing information

The literature review will assist you in considering the validity and scope of your research question so that you can do the necessary revision and fine tuning to it. It provides the foundation to formulate and present strong arguments to justify your chosen research topic.

Reckoning with Authorities

As you are developing your Lit Review, part of your objective is to identify the leading authorities within the field or who address your topic or theme. Some tips for identifying the scholars:

Old Fashioned Method:

  • Keep notes on footnotes and names as you read articles, books, blogs, exhibition catalogs, etc. Are there names or works that everyone references? Use the catalog to track these reference down.
  • Consider looking for state of the field articles often found either in a discipline's primary journal or in conference proceedings - keynote speakers.
  • Look for book reviews.

Publication Metrics:

  • These resources include information about the frequency of citations for an article/author.
  • These resources are not specifically for Architecture or Planning. Remember therefore to be critical and careful about the assumptions you make with regard to the results!

Architecture

DAAP » Academic Programs » School of Architecture and Interior Design » PhD in Architecture

Why study Architecture?

University of Cincinnati’s Ph.D. Program in Architecture is a post-professional degree program of advanced theoretical studies in architecture with a focus on the acquisition of critical skills related to architectural production, both built and theoretical. It is intended primarily for students already in possession of a graduate degree in architecture or a related field such as interior design, planning, or landscape architecture. The Ph.D. program is an outgrowth of the university’s longstanding MS Program in Architecture, whose focus has traditionally been on architectural history, theories, and criticism as they relate to architectural practice. The program exposes students to a range of concepts in the field and fosters the ability to question and assess the built environment and the documents that relate to it.

In addition to a common core consisting of coursework in architectural theories and research methods, students complete courses in a minor field, demonstrate mastery of a major with the qualifying exam, and successfully defend a dissertation proposal in the third year, qualifying for candidacy and achieving ABD (“all but dissertation”) status. Students research, write and defend the dissertation in the final years of the program. With faculty members with technical expertise in human and environmental factors, computation, parametric design, and robotics in addition to the program’s traditional strengths in history, theory, and criticism,  the program can accommodate a range of student interests. The major exam is a multi-day written examination based on a reading list agreed upon among the committee members.

To fulfill the minor requirement, students may propose an individual course of study, supervised by a professor other than the dissertation chair, or they may choose from among a number of approved graduate certificates offered by the university. Popular options include Historic Preservation; Urban Design; Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; and Data Analytics.

Admission Requirements

Students applying to the Ph.D. Program in Architecture should have completed a Master's degree in architecture or a related field prior to matriculation. Students with an undergraduate degree or with an unrelated graduate degree must instead apply for the MS Program in Architecture. Some students enter the Ph.D. program directly from the MS program. These students retain their credits from their MS studies and enter the Ph.D. program at an advanced phase commensurate with their completed studies.

Unofficial transcript(s) from all colleges/universities attended are required. Official transcripts are not required during the admissions process, and only unofficial transcripts are required for the application. Applicants should not send official transcripts until they are offered admission and confirm enrollment to the university. For complete transcript requirements, please view the Transcript Submission Policy webpage.

A portfolio of design, art, or other graphic work is optional. The portfolio is an opportunity to demonstrate your design abilities, artistic talents, or other information you deem pertinent to your application. The content does not have to be architectural if your background is in another discipline. Written project statements to accompany visual work are helpful. Portfolios are submitted online.  We do not accept hard copies of portfolios.

Three letters of recommendation from persons who are in a position to evaluate your abilities and your potential for success as a graduate student are required. There is no standard form to fill out; instead, based on the information you provide in your application, recommenders will be emailed instructions on the process for submitting letters of recommendation.

A summary of your academic and professional experiences is required.

A two-page statement of your interest in graduate study in architecture is required. This should be a concise, articulate presentation of your academic and career goals, and any specific interests you have in architectural topics for graduate research and design. It should reflect your prior intellectual and professional engagement with these issues, and may also provide some additional perspective on the work illustrated in the portfolio.

Students applying to the Ph.D. program must submit one or two writing samples demonstrating the ability to conduct scholarly research and examine theoretical concepts. The essays can expand on the areas of research interest or on any topic.

Applicants to the Ph.D. Program in Architecture must demonstrate a commitment to the critical study of architecture and related design fields, including interior design, urban design, and landscape architecture. Prior education or working experience in architecture or a related field is desirable. Excellent writing skills and an interest in theoretical research are essential. Students whose English writing or speaking skills are not adequate for the demands of the curriculum must enroll in advanced, graduate-level English as a Second Language coursework prior to, and sometimes in tandem, with program coursework.

The Ph.D. Program in Architecture prepares researchers, educators, and practitioners for advanced scholarly, pedagogic, and professional work in architecture and related fields. Most graduates of the program become full-time professors or practitioners of architecture. Because UC’s Ph.D. Program in Architecture has a small number of students, we are able to facilitate one-on-one student and faculty advising and collaboration. Students work with their faculty to develop their research and writing skills and they publish and present their work in national and international venues. While the program does not have separate tracks for students pursuing technical research, program faculty members assist students in identifying coursework and campus resources to develop the necessary competencies. All entering students have the opportunity to consult with multiple members of the Ph.D. Program faculty and with the program coordinator to determine appropriate elective coursework and dissertation committee composition.

  • The city of Cincinnati, once called the "Queen City of the West" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, provides an excellent array of cultural resources for students who intend to pursue a degree in the visual arts. It offers the energy and assets of a larger city, along with quiet neighborhoods steeped in rich traditions. Cincinnati offers live music venues that range from top-notch symphony and opera companies to a growing pop and rock community. Home to the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Taft Museum and the Contemporary Arts Center, the city also enjoys the presence of numerous art galleries and a strong support system among practicing artists. Cincinnati is situated within driving distance of Chicago, Pittsburgh, Atlanta and New York City, allowing DAAP students to take advantage of the rich cultural resources of these cities as well.
  • UC's College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) is one of the most comprehensive colleges of its type in the country. A collection of nationally respected design and art programs is housed in a unique and educationally stimulating architectural setting. Architecture students have opportunities to enroll in courses in a range of related disciplines and to participate in interdisciplinary studios or special projects.
  • UC’s emphasis on interdisciplinary studies facilitates interaction with counterparts in other schools of the College of Design, Art, Architecture, and Planning as well as other colleges such as the Engineering, Arts and Sciences, Medicine, and the College Conservatory of Music. Such interdisciplinary studies should be planned in consultation with PhD Program faculty members and approved by the Ph.D. Program coordinator.
  • Eligible students accepted to the Ph.D. Program in Architecture may compete for a limited number of scholarships and assistantships. All students are required to participate in a teaching practicum as part of the program, and many are chosen for paid teaching assistantships in the latter years of the program. Students are also eligible to work in campus jobs for up to 20 hours per week when classes are in session and 40 hours during vacations.
  • The DAAP college library has an outstanding collection of books, periodicals and visual resources supporting architecture, planning, design, art history and related subjects. Access to library holdings is provided by an automated online catalog, UCLID, which provides access to the University of Cincinnati Library information database, and through OhioLINK, the holdings of other academic libraries throughout Ohio.
  • The Computer Graphics Center is a state-of-the-art university facility with hardware that includes PCs, Macs, and peripherals such as scanners, plotters and digital video-editing suites. Students have access to sophisticated graphics equipment and receive hands-on instruction to augment the use of laptops in the classroom.
  • The college supports a Rapid Prototyping Center, which is the home of state-of-the-art equipment that allows students to create communication aids for their work. Using CAD (computer-aided design) models, students are able to create physical models using three basic methods: 3-D printing, large format laser-cutting and CNC (computer numeric control) devices.

For applicants whose native language is not English, a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of at least 100 iBT (600 paper) or an IELTS score of at least 7.0 is common and is typically our minimum. The university requires minimum scores of 80 on the TOEFL and 6.5 on the IELTS. Applicants with scores below the campus minimums will not reach the Ph.D. in Architecture admissions committee for review. Students whose scores are above the campus minimum but below the Ph.D. in Architecture Program standards, or students whose English writing or speaking ability does not meet program expectations, will be considered on a case-by-case basis, however, they must agree to take graduate-level ELS coursework and possibly other courses as a condition of acceptance.

The architecture program of the University of Cincinnati has been accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) continuously since 1948, and its courses satisfy requirements maintained by various state architectural registration boards.

In the United States, most state registration boards require a degree from an accredited professional degree program as a prerequisite for licensure. The NAAB, which is the sole agency authorized to accredit U.S. professional degree programs in architecture, recognizes three types of degrees: the bachelor of architecture, the master of architecture, and the doctor of architecture. A program may be granted a 8-year, 3-year, or 2-year term of accreditation, depending on the extent of its conformance with established educational standards. University of Cincinnati’s Ph.D. program in Architecture is not an accredited professional degree.

MR. ROBOTO - Guest Curators: Virginia San Fratello and Eleanor Pries

February 24–June 30, 2024 Robots are our partners in the future. This exhibition showcases a collection of design activities and experiments by students at San José State University, as they test the creative possibilities of collaborating with a robot. Innovative designers have the opportunity to advance design, craft, and customization using industrial robots. These robotic explorations are unprecedented learning opportunities that teach students about cutting-edge content creation and fabrication methods that will allow designers to transform the professions and industries to which they will bring their robotic expertise. This means opening the door to the future of craft and design to the next generation and giving them the space, skills, and imagination to explore new activities and job opportunities.
