How can i find a thesis.

UCL PhD theses in digital format can be found in  UCL Discover y, but please note that some theses have restrictions on access, at least for a certain period of time, and UCL's Open Access Team can be contacted with any queries.

Records can also be found in  Explore , and if we have a print copy,  it may be possible to consult it in one of our libraries by filling in a  Store Request Form  in advance of a visit.

Older PhD theses which haven’t been scanned yet can be ordered via the British Library's EThOS service  as they are digitizing them on demand, and for more information on theses generally see our  web page .

Doctoral theses in UCL’s repository

By Patrycja, on 25 October 2018

At UCL, candidates for research degrees are required to deposit an electronic copy of their final thesis in UCL’s Research Publications Service (RPS), to be made open access in UCL’s institutional repository, UCL Discovery . Students can choose to restric public access to their thesis, for a variety of reasons like future publication, copyright restriction or sensitive data, but most are made open access immediately, or after a delay period no longer than 12 months.

The requirement to submit an electronic copy of your thesis as a condition of award has been in place at UCL since 2009. In addition to that, we have retrospectively digitised theses from earlier years, as a part of a collaborative project with ProQuest. So far, about 3,500 theses have been made available in UCL Discovery as a part of this collaboration. Theses are also digitised through the British Library’s e-Theses Online Service ( EThOS ), upon request.

In total, there are over 10,500 theses available in UCL’s institutional repository, dating as far back as 1933 . UCL theses are amongst our most-downloaded items! The most popular is a 1990 thesis,  Marketing theories and concepts for the international construction industry , available here . Amongst the theses available there are some completed by notable UCL alumni:

Julian Baggini , philosopher and author of popular books on philosophy, including  A Short History of Truth , The Pig that Wants to be Eaten and 99 other thought experiments , and most recently  How the World Think s. Baggini completed his PhD in 1996, and his thesis on philopsphy of idnetity was recently made available here: http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10057733/

Adam Rutherford , geneticist and author, has produced several science documentaries, and hosts the BBC 4 radio programme Inside Science. He completed his PhD at UCL in 2002, and his thesis on the role of a specific gene (CHX10) on eye development was recently made available in UCL Discovery: http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10057801/

Chris Van Tulleken , together with his twin brother and fellow doctor Xand, makes programmes on various aspects of health, most recently Operation Ouch for CBBC . He is also an infectious diseases doctor and MRC Clinical Research Fellow at University College London Hospital, and completed his PhD in 2017. Chris’ thesis is available here: http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1567969/

University of London theses

Most University of London theses are held by the libraries of the colleges through which the theses were awarded.

Copies of some University of London  research degree theses  are held offsite at the depository of the Senate House Library. Copies may also be held by the relevant  Institute Libraries . If you know that the thesis you are interested in was awarded by the University of London, check the  Author/Title option in the catalogue of Theses.

If you want to locate theses written on a particular subject use  Theses Keyword  enquiry and enter terms for the subject area you are interested in.

Theses from the British Isles

Theses awarded by any university in Great Britain can be located using the  ProQuest Dissertations and Theses: Global . Most will be available via the  EThOS Electronic Theses Online Service . Theses will be available through EThOS for immediate download if they have already been digitised. If not, you can make a request can via the EThOS service for the thesis to be digitised and made available for you. In most cases the service is free of charge.

If you have difficulty finding a thesis on the  EThOS catalogue  we strongly recommend you consult the ‘Search tips’ available via the main EThOS search page.

Not all UK universities participate in the EThOS service. If a thesis is not available through EThOS it may be possible to consult it on interlibrary loan. Senate House Library can arrange this on your behalf but you may wish to make a request through your home library as this will usually be cheaper. See our  Interlibrary Loans  pages for further information on making a request through Senate House Library.

OpenDissertations  includes links to EThos or Institutional repositories, for the British theses it includes.

American, Canadian & some European Universities Theses

Theses awarded by American, Canadian and some European Universities can be located using  ProQuest Dissertations and Theses: Global  which includes full text from 1997. Going back to 1743, this is a computer searchable database available offsite for authorised users. Some theses are also being made available on an open access basis on the  PQDT Open  website. Others may be ordered on  Dissertation Express .

OpenDissertations  is an EBSCO open-access database which incorporates American Doctoral Dissertations, and information about theses contributed by select colleges and universities from around the world. While the database does not contain the full text it does have links to ETHOS or Institutional repositories, for the British theses it includes.

In order to consult a thesis from abroad which is not available via this service it is advisable to ask your college library (or the British Library if you are a member there) if they can organise an inter-library loan. If you are not a member of another library we can organise an inter-library loan on your behalf, but there is a  charge

There is a gateway for European e-theses at  DART-Europe E-theses Portal .

Grey Literature - an Overview

Grey literature refers to any information source that is not commercially published. As these sources are dispersed and not collected by centralised publishing platforms, they are sometimes difficult to find and can be tiresome to search.

What counts as grey literature?

  • Internal reports, such as government white papers
  • Meeting minutes and notes
  • Conference abstracts, papers
  • Theses and dissertations
  • Pre-print or unpublished research
  • Clinical trial data
  • Patents and technical standards information, such as British Standards (BSO) or International Standards (ISO)

Why use grey literature?

  • Often good quality information produced by experts in their field, e.g. white papers are commissioned by the government from a body of subject specialists
  • Providing important insights into the 'reality' of research, e.g. clinical trial data that is not published because the study was not successful and therefore not commercially beneficial
  • Reflects the expertise of individuals not associated with academia e.g. independent think tanks; charities representing oppressed groups or individuals; other industry experts (for example, in business or technology).
