Scholars at the ten campuses of the University of California system, like their academic peers elsewhere, increasingly are being asked to ensure that data resulting from their research and teaching activities are subject to effective long-term management, public discovery, and retrieval. The new academic imperative for research data management (RDM) stems from mandates from public and private funding agencies, pre-publication requirements, institutional policies, and evolving norms of scholarly discourse. In order to meet these new obligations, scholars need access to appropriate disciplinary and institutional tools, services, and guidance. When providing help in these areas, it is important that service providers recognize the disparity in scholarly familiarity with data curation concepts and practices. While the UC Curation Center (UC3) at the California Digital Library supports a growing roster of innovative curation services for University use, most were intended originally to m...

The Research Data Management Survey was conducted for the purpose of gaining insight into faculty research data practices and needs to better inform decision-making about campus-wide research data management services and support. A draft of the survey was obtained from University of Florida librarians, Mark Sullivan and Laurie Taylor. 534 people were invited to participate, 97, 18.2%, partially or fully completed the survey. The report accompanied a presentation at the Research Computing Day at IST, Feb 11, 2014. http://www.ist.ucf.edu/researchcomputingday.html

ATLANTA , April 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Teradata University Network , sponsored by Teradata Corporation (NYSE: TDC ), today announced the Teradata Case Competition to encourage and financially support the development of case studies illustrating the successful practice of business intelligence and data warehousing by Teradata customers. More than $50,000 will be awarded in study grants and prizes to professors submitting winning entries. The deadline for case study proposals is May 1 .

"We're doing this to provide professors and faculty an opportunity for funded research, recognition, and publication. The companies that they profile will be further recognized for their leadership in business intelligence and data warehousing," said Hugh Watson , competition coordinator and professor of MIS in the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia .
The Teradata Case Competition includes two stages, each juried by leading academics and Teradata managers and professionals. The first step is the submission of proposals. The second step is the submission of fully completed case studies. Proposals should focus on the customer's need for changes, the impact the changes had and the return on investment, as well as summarize the role of the Teradata technology or Teradata professional services in enabling or supporting the work. The company work can be enterprise-wide or departmental but must illustrate best practices and have demonstrable high impact. The submission form and additional information are here. ( http://www.teradata.com/t/teradata-case-competition/ )
Accepted proposals will be announced on June 1 and will receive $10,000 in funding from Teradata. "Each case development grant will help fund the research into the best practices within a specific Teradata customer company," explained Teradata University Network Director Susan Baxley . "We know that through this effort we will help academics discover the best practices of very successful companies and we suspect that some of those companies will be surprised to learn just how good they are in their use of business intelligence."
Accepted complete case submissions will then be judged and prize winners will be announced November 15 . The first place prize is $10,000 . All completed case studies will be made available to the academic community to support instruction and research and will also be used by Teradata to illustrate best practices and the value of business intelligence and data warehousing.

Teradata University Network: A New Resource for Teaching Large Data Bases and Their Applications
Hugh J. Watson , University of Georgia Follow Jeffrey A. Hoffer , UNiversity of Dayton Follow
A free learning portal designed to help faculty to teach, learn, and connect with others in the fields of data warehousing, DSS/BI, and database is being made available by Teradata, a division of NCR. Teradata worked closely with leading academics to create the Teradata University Network (www.teradatauniversitynetwork.com). The network is reached by faculty through a portal that includes (1) course syllabi; (2) access to software; (2) Power Point presentations (with speaker's notes); (4) cases, projects, and assignments (with teaching notes); (5) book chapters, articles, and research reports; (6) the Teradata library; (7) web-based courses; and (8) links to related sites. In addition, a separate portal for students, located at www.teradatastudentnetwork.com, leads to a subset of the above materials, including (1) access to software; (2) cases, projects, and assignments (without teaching notes); (3) book chapters, articles, and research reports; (4) the Teradata library; and (5) links to related sites. The student site excludes materials that are only for course instructors. This tutorial describes the creation of the Teradata University Network (TUN), discusses how faculty access and use TUN, describes how a faculty member might use it in a typical session, and faculty reactions to TUN. Special attention is given to the software available on TUN and TSN. It also discusses working with Teradata and TUN and provides lessons learned to help other faculty involved in vendor-supported initiatives.
