Doctoral Program
The Ph.D. program emphasizes rigorous theoretical work that has at its base a firm empirical foundation in language data.
Students are provided with a broad-based background in linguistics, teaching experience in the classroom and other forums, and opportunities for original and high-quality research. Our Ph.D. students write dissertations on a wide range of topics spanning and bridging many subareas of the field. See our Ph.D. Alumni page for dissertation titles and job placement information.
Overview of the Program
Through the completion of advanced coursework and strong methodological and analytical training, the Ph.D. program prepares students to make original contributions to knowledge in linguistics, to articulate the results of their work, and to demonstrate its significance to linguistics and related fields. At every stage in the program, students are encouraged to present and publish their research and to develop active professional profiles.
Students generally complete the program in five years
- Coursework in core areas of linguistics, chosen by each student in consultation with faculty advisors to build the foundation that best suits their interests and goals.
- Fall Quarter: Includes seminar to introduce students to the research of faculty in the department
- Winter Quarter: Includes participation in small research groups or in one-on-one apprenticeships
- Spring Quarter: Includes beginning to work on the first of 2 qualifying research papers
Years 2 and 3
- Balance shifts from coursework to development of research skills
- Students complete two qualifying papers and then selects a principal advisor and committee for their dissertation by the end of year 3.
Years 4 and 5
- Devoted to dissertation and advanced research
Teaching Experience
As they move through the Ph.D. program, students also gain teaching experience by serving as teaching assistants in their second, third, and fourth year of graduate study. They also have access to the many programs provided by Stanford's Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning , including the varied resources of the Teaching Commons .
Offers of admission to the Linguistics Ph.D. program include funding for the full five years of doctoral study, including tuition and stipend, regardless of citizenship.
We also encourage our applicants to apply for as many external fellowships and scholarships as they are eligible for; a compilation of funding opportunities for Linguistics graduate students can be found on our Fellowship and Funding Information page . Applicants should note that the deadlines for these fellowships are typically in the fall of the year prior to admission.
In addition, the Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS) program is designed to build a multidisciplinary community of Stanford graduate students dedicated to finding creative solutions to the world's greatest challenges. Join dozens of Stanford School of Humanities and Sciences students who gain valuable leadership skills in a multidisciplinary, multicultural community as Knight-Hennessy Scholars . KHS admits up to 100 applicants each year from across Stanford’s seven graduate schools, and delivers engaging experiences that prepare them to be visionary, courageous, and collaborative leaders ready to address complex global challenges. As a scholar, you join a distinguished cohort, participate in up to three years of KHS's leadership program, and receive full funding for up to three years of your PhD studies at Stanford. Candidates of any country may apply. KHS applicants must have earned their first undergraduate degree within the last seven years, and must apply to both a Stanford graduate program and to KHS. Stanford PhD students may also apply to KHS during their first year of PhD enrollment. If you aspire to be a leader in your field, we invite you to apply. The KHS application deadline is October 9, 2024. Learn more about KHS admission .
Additional information is available about the student budget , Stanford graduate fellowships , and other support programs .
Outside the classroom, there are many opportunities, both formal and informal, for the discussion of linguistic issues and ongoing research, including colloquia, workshops, and reading groups.
Partnership Opportunities
Although not part of the formal doctoral program, there are numerous opportunities for research and development work at the Center for the Study of Language and Information and off-campus at local companies.

Fully Funded PhD Programs in Linguistics
Last updated March 30, 2022
As part of my series on How to Fully Fund Your PhD , I provide a list of universities that offer full funding for a PhD in Linguistics. A graduate degree in Linguistics can pave the way for a career in academia or the private sector as a translator, computational linguist, forensic linguist or technical writer.
“Full funding” is a financial aid package for full time students that includes full tuition remission and an annual stipend or salary for the three to six-year duration of the student’s doctoral studies. Funding is typically offered in exchange for graduate teaching and research work that is complementary to your studies. Not all universities provide full funding to their doctoral students, which is why I recommend researching the financial aid offerings of all the potential PhD programs in your academic field, including small and lesser-known schools both in the U.S. and abroad.
You can also find several external fellowships in the ProFellow database for graduate and doctoral study, as well as dissertation research, field work, language study and summer work experience.

Aims of the PhD
Human language is a multifaceted phenomenon. It is simultaneously a property of individual minds and of whole speech communities, and thus both internal and external to us. It both shapes and is shaped by our societies over time. It is a combination of sound (or sign), which has physical properties that can be measured, and meaning, which does not. Accordingly, becoming a linguistic researcher involves mastering a variety of methods, both quantitative and qualitative. The PhD in Linguistics at BU aims to produce scholars who are versatile enough to be experts in both of these aspects of linguistic inquiry, yet skilled enough to do cutting-edge research in a particular subfield of the discipline. We offer a solid grounding in a range of research methods, including field methods, quantitative methods, and computational methods.
Learning Outcomes
Students graduating with a PhD in Linguistics will demonstrate:
- broad knowledge of the discipline
- deeper knowledge in a specialized area or subfield
- ability to carry out a significant piece of independent research (which implies knowledge of and ability to use research methodologies in order to complete the research)
Prerequisites
The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is not required to apply.
Entering students are expected to have completed introductory classes in:
- phonetics/phonology (e.g., GRS LX 601)
- syntax (e.g., GRS LX 621)
- semantics/pragmatics (e.g., GRS LX 631)
Students who do not have sufficient background in linguistics must complete additional coursework to fulfill the above prerequisites prior to entry or during the first year. Note: if completed at BU, GRS LX 601, 621, and 631 will not count toward the PhD course requirements.
Admissions & Funding
The deadline for application to enter the program in Fall 2023 is January 6, 2023. Information about the graduate admissions process ( including the application process and requirements ) is available at the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (GRS) website:
We anticipate being able to admit about five students per year. All admitted students will receive full coverage of tuition costs plus a fellowship for five years. For further information about funding, consult the GRS website above.
Requirements
Course requirements.
The PhD requires successful completion of 64 credits at the graduate level, including three core courses:
- GRS LX 703 Phonological Analysis
- GRS LX 722 Intermediate Syntax
- GRS LX 732 Intermediate Semantics
Six additional courses from the four areas below, with two courses each in two of the areas, and one course each in the remaining two areas:
- advanced phonetics, phonology, or morphology (e.g., GRS LX 706)
- advanced syntax, semantics, or pragmatics (e.g., GRS LX 723, 736)
- linguistic research methodology
- language acquisition or socio-historical linguistics
A 4-credit graduate proseminar sequence (GRS LX 801 & 802) is typically taken in the second year.
Finally, six additional courses (including up to 8 credits of directed study) are taken in Linguistics or related fields that comprise a specialization , which will generally be in the area of the dissertation. These courses will be decided upon by the student in conjunction with their advisor, whose approval is required.
Language Requirement
The PhD requires demonstration of graduate-level reading proficiency in two foreign languages (one of which may be English, for non-native speakers) by the end of the third year of enrollment.
These proficiencies can be demonstrated through any of:
- a language examination
- successful completion of a non-credit graduate-level foreign language reading course offered at BU
- the equivalent of two years of undergraduate study of the language at BU (or successful completion of any higher-level language course taught in the language)
Graduate-level foreign language reading courses offered at BU include:
- GRS LF 621 Reading French for Graduate Students
- GRS LG 621 Reading German for Graduate Students
- GRS LI 621 Reading Italian for Graduate Students
- GRS LS 621 Reading Spanish for Graduate Students
Qualifying Examinations
To advance to candidacy, students must satisfactorily complete and defend two substantial research papers in different areas of the field (the first by the end of the fourth semester, the second by the end of the sixth semester of enrollment).
Each Qualifying Paper (QP) will be planned and carried out under the supervision of a Linguistics faculty member with expertise appropriate to the relevant project and, upon completion, will be defended orally and approved by an examining committee, composed of the first and second reader as well as a third faculty member determined by the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) in consultation with the student.
A brief proposal for each QP must be submitted, with signed approval of a first and second reader (who have been approved by the DGS and who have agreed to advise the student on the proposed project), by October 15 of the academic year in which the project is to be completed. For the second QP, a topic approval form, in which the student explains how the second QP differs from their first QP, must also be submitted, in advance of the proposal approval form.
Dissertation and Final Oral Examination
PhD candidates will demonstrate their abilities for independent study in a dissertation representing original research or creative scholarship.
A prospectus for the dissertation must be completed and approved by the readers, the DGS, and the Department Chair.
Candidates must undergo a final oral examination in which they defend their dissertation as a valuable contribution to knowledge in their field and demonstrate a mastery of their field of specialization in relation to their dissertation.
All portions of the dissertation and final oral examination must be completed as outlined in the GRS general requirements for the PhD degree:

The MA in Linguistics with a concentration in ESL offers students broad training in all core areas of the discipline. Our MA programs prepare students for challenging careers in a variety of industries, including government, education, law, bioinformatics, and natural language processing. The ESL concentration specifically prepares students for careers in teaching English as a second and/or foreign language and language arts instruction for K-12 (with additional certification and coursework from the College of Education). Our MA programs also serve as an excellent foundation for doctoral studies in Linguistics and other language-related fields such as speech pathology, deaf education, audiology, or the teaching of English as a second language.
The five major foci of graduate studies in Linguistics are:
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Of general interest to many of our students, but of special interest to those interested in Teaching English as a Second Language, are courses on second language acquisition; pedagogical approaches to English grammar; methods and practicum in teaching English as a second or additional language; and English language variation and change, including varieties of English spoken worldwide. Our practicum in ESL is often available at an international venue. We also offer a Graduate Academic Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.
Language Documentation, Curation, and Conservation The world's languages, approximately 7000 of them, are disappearing at an alarming rate. Each language encodes unique knowledge about the ecologies - both animals and plants - of the societies that are centered on the languages spoken. To preserve and employ this data to further our understanding of this essential part of what it means to be human, linguists and interested members of language communities work together to collect and analyze linguistic data, and to preserve it in archives for use in the future. We offer courses on scientifically sound and ethically appropriate data collection methodologies, gold standard archiving practices, and methods for data mining. All these lead to research projects on non Indo-European languages and provide students with extraordinary opportunities to learn about new cultures and customs.
Computational Linguistics
The newest focus of the UNT Linguistics Department's graduate offerings is computational linguistics (CL). CL technologies are increasingly present in daily life, from voice-enabled smart phone assistants to predictive text input to machine translation technologies. From an academic viewpoint, CL is the scientific study of language from a computational perspective, living at the intersection of language and technology. Students develop keen skills in linguistics and linguistic analysis. This knowledge can then be applied to the design of computational systems for automating linguistic analysis. At UNT we place a particular focus on how computational methods can support the work of documenting endangered languages, linking two of our department's strengths.
Language Variation and Change Languages can vary in just about every aspect of their grammar. Compare for example American English and Australian English, which differ in accent, words used to refer to the same objects, and also in some sentence patterns. To understand language as a human system we ask how languages vary, the limits to the ways in which they may vary, and what causes them to vary. We offer courses on theoretical frameworks dealing with these questions and these data. We also offer courses on the many varieties of English in America, the structure of African American English Vernacular, the structure and history of the Englishes around the world, and on principles of language change, reconstruction, and change through language contact.
Linguistic Analysis of Literature UNT is one of the few linguistics programs in the country to offer regular courses in the linguistic analysis of poetry and prose. The courses focus on the many kinds of repetition that are used by the world's great writers - repetitions of sound, parallelisms of form - which have the effect of making literary texts a permanent part of the world's art.
A sixth area we are developing in conjunction with the Department of Library Sciences is Language Data Curation and Archiving. In this area of study, students will gain important competencies in the concepts, practices, and technologies used for managing linguistic data, e.g., data modeling and database design, representing information for storage and access, digital curation and data management, and information systems.

Western Regional Graduate Program
We are happy to announce that starting with students entering in Fall 2020, the Department of Linguistics at UH participates in the Western Region Graduate Program . Graduate Students who are residents of WICHE states (Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, Guam or the Northern Mariana Islands) with a baccalaureate grade point average of 3.0 or higher will receive reduced tuition at 150% of Hawaiʻi resident tuition.
How to apply for admission
The application process consists of two components: (A) an application to Graduate Division, and (B) supplemental materials specific to the Department of Linguistics. Be sure to complete both components fully.
A. Apply for admission to the Graduate Division
General Information about the Graduate Division’s requirements can be found on their Website for Prospective Students. You may apply to the Graduate Division either online or by paper application.
You will need to provide the following set of documents to the Graduate Division:
1. Application form and appropriate fee;
2. One official transcript from each post-secondary institution attended, including any study abroad or exchange programs, summer programs, and non-degree work and extension programs sent directly from the institution to the Graduate Division;
3. Official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score report is required (for international applicants, as well as some immigrant and US applicants). Our program requires a minimum TOEFL score of 94 (internet-based test), with subtest scores of 25 for listening and 25 for speaking for admissibility and for waiver of English Language Institute (ELI) placement tests. We also accept the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of seven in place of the minimum TOEFL scores. TOEFL or IELTS scores cannot be more than two years old.
Note: University of Hawaii Graduate Division is no longer accepting the Duolingo English Test.
4. Verification of financial status (for international applicants).
B. Submit supplemental materials specific to the Department of Linguistics
Use the Graduate Application Supplemental Documents Upload Website to submit the following supporting documentation that is specific to the Department of Linguistics. Visit this tutorial for more information on using the Supplemental Documents Upload Website. Be sure to submit everything as PDF.
1. Department of Linguistics Application Form (PDF)
2. Three (3) Letters of Recommendation:
a. We recommend using the Supplemental Documents Upload Website to request letters of recommendation. Graduate Division will send the request to your letter writers and provide them a link for submitting their letters.
b. If any of your letter writers have trouble loading their letter of recommendation onto the Supplemental Documents Website, another option is to Download the Department of Linguistics Letter of Recommendation Form [PDF]. After signing the waiver, you may send it to the appropriate letter writers. Upon completion, they can email it to the [email protected] address. Some letter writers may prefer not to use the form and will instead provide their letter of recommendation on their company’s letterhead. This option also works.
3. A sample of your academic writing, such as a seminar paper. This must be written in English or ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi.
4. Statement of Objectives form [PDF] . You may prepare your statement as a separate file and include it as a (PDF) attachment along with this form.
Do not submit GRE scores ; we do not accept the GRE as part of the admission packet.

The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics (LLL) offers studies in foreign languages, linguistics, and TESL, and language teaching. Our graduates use their language skills both professionally and, in the classroom, and many have chosen to pair an LLL major or minor with another degree program.
We have dedicated language programs in Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Latin, and Linguistics, and are currently offering courses in Arabic and Persian.
INCOMING STUDENTS: Did you take a foreign language in high school or at another college prior to enrolling at ISU? Click here to find out how you can gain credits for your previous coursework and/or get placed into higher-level foreign language courses!
Mission: Programs offered by the department prepare students for active global citizenship by providing them with skills in world languages and the disciplinary tools of linguistic, cultural, and literary analysis. The department’s programs foster the cultural knowledge and sensitivity necessary for effective engagement with diverse populations in Indiana and throughout the world.
Foundational Studies
The Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics offers both lower- and upper-division Foundational Studies courses. Foundational Studies courses offered by LLL include the following:

Foreign Language Placement
Students who have satisfied the Foundational Studies non-native language requirement and who wish to take further course work in a language MUST take the Language Placement Examination to determine the level of language course work most appropriate for them. Depending upon the level of placement, students may receive credit for their knowledge of the language, some of which may count toward Foundational Studies Requirements. The test is administered by the University Testing Office.
Sigma Phi (Latin & ancient Greek)
Eta Sigma Phi is an honorary collegiate society for students of Latin and/or Greek. Members are elected by local chapters which have been chartered by the society.
HISTORY: Eta Sigma Phi had its beginning in 1914 when a group of students in the Department of Greek at the University of Chicago organized an undergraduate classical club to which honor students in Greek and Latin were elected to membership. This organization later united with a similar organization at Northwestern University and became Eta Sigma Phi. In 1924 the society became national, and chapters were organized at leading colleges and universities. The society was incorporated in 1927 under the laws of the State of Illinois.
PURPOSE: The Constitution of Eta Sigma Phi states that the purposes of the society are “to develop and promote interest in classical study among the students of colleges and universities; to promote closer fraternal relationship among students who are interested in classical study, including inter-campus relationship; to engage generally in an effort to stimulate interest in classical study, and in the history, art, and literature of ancient Greece and Rome.”
ELIGIBILITY: Local chapters are chartered at liberal arts colleges and universities which are on the accredited list of the Association of American Universities or the recognized regional accrediting agency. Normally the institution will offer a major in Classics.
Phi Sigma Iota

Created in 1902 through the will of Cecil Rhodes, Rhodes Scholarships cover all expenses for two or three years of study at Oxford. The 32 students selected from the United States this year represent 24 colleges and include 22 women, the most in the scholarship’s history. Harvard’s American Rhodes Scholars now number 379.
This year’s honorees will begin their graduate studies next October. The U.S. Rhodes Scholars will join an international group chosen from more than 60 countries, and two winners from any country in the world without its own scholarship. Those awards will be announced in the coming days. A full list of U.S. winners can be viewed on the Rhodes Trust website.

RVCC Graduate Studies in Turkey Through Critical Language Scholarship Program
Stephen Evarts of Frenchtown, a May 2024 graduate of Raritan Valley Community College, recently participated in the U.S. Department of State’s Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program to study Turkish over the summer. Evarts is one of approximately 500 American students at U.S. colleges and universities who were selected from over 5,000 applicants to study overseas or virtually in the summer of 2024.
The scholarship enabled Evarts to study Turkish at the TÖMER Institute at Ankara University, which specializes in teaching the language to foreigners. They spent eight weeks in the country, studying five days a week and participating in program excursions and cultural activities on the weekends. This ranged from learning to cook local dishes or practicing calligraphy or the ancient arts of Ebru (water-marbling paper); to visiting the U.S. Embassy in Ankara and meeting the U.S. ambassador to Turkey; to exploring such locations as Amasra, a small coastal village on the Black Sea, and the Ihlara Valley in Central Turkey, including Byzantine cave homes and churches that were carved into the cliffs between the 7th-11th centuries C.E.
Earlier this summer, Evarts, who graduated from RVCC Summa Cum Laude, was honored with the 2024 New Jersey Council of County Colleges Student of the Year Award. Beginning in the Spring Semester, Evarts will be attending Rutgers University, where they plan to complete a bachelor's degree in Linguistics with a focus on language acquisition and cognition.
The CLS Program is part of a U.S. government effort to increase the number of Americans studying critical foreign languages. The program provides opportunities to U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to spend 8-10 weeks studying one of over a dozen critical languages: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, or Urdu. The program includes intensive language instruction and cultural enrichment experiences to promote rapid language gains. For additional information, visit http://www.clscholarship.org/ .
Ranked by WalletHub.com, Intelligent.com, and CollegeEvaluator.com as the #1 community college in New Jersey, Raritan Valley Community College has been serving as an academic and cultural center for Somerset and Hunterdon County residents for over 50 years. The College has been nationally recognized for its service to the community, environmental stewardship, and commitment to diversity. It is home to a Planetarium, Science Education Institute, and 3M Observatory; a Theatre offering professional performances for all ages; and an Honors College for high achieving students.
The College offers approximately 90 associate degrees and certificates, as well as career training and professional development courses. RVCC is located at 118 Lamington Road in Branchburg, NJ. For further information, visit www.raritanval.edu .
