Throughout the course, you will explore key national and international public health issues from various disciplinary perspectives. You will gain a better understanding of epidemiological measures, promoting health and research methods, along with several other module options.  

This course is offered entirely online, allowing you the flexibility to study from anywhere. However, to ensure you stay on track for graduation, students are required to complete each module within the designated semester.

All modules in this course can be studied as standalone CPD modules . It is possible to complete standalone modules and then apply to transfer to an MSc/PGCert qualification. Any time spent on the CPD route counts toward the time limit a student has to complete their chosen qualification.

You will take 180 credits, including all six core modules listed, the 60 credit dissertation and two optional modules. You can also choose to study one or more individual modules as a  Continuing Professional Development (CPD)  student.

Core modules:

Global health has been described as the art and science of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health through the organised efforts of society, with the goal being the attainment of biological, physical, and mental well-being of all members of society. In this module, which is delivered online, we take an inter-disciplinary approach to explore these themes. We will consider some of the key concepts of global health, explore some of the determinants of health, and consider some of the key functions and methods applied to address global health issues. We will then reflect on these themes in relation to the practice of global health through the lens of specific health challenges. Throughout the module themes such as inequalities in health, complexities in our response, and the political, social, and economic context within which we work will be repeatedly raised and discussed.  The module will explore a diverse range of subjects that include socioeconomic and health inequalities, health intelligence, and sexual and reproductive health. Throughout the module you will be encouraged to develop and use a reflective learning approach to consider shifts in your perception and understanding of the issues raised.

As one of the core disciplines of Public Health, epidemiology is concerned with the methods of studying health related states and events to control health problems. The module, which is delivered online, covers epidemiological measures, main study designs, screening and surveillance. The primary objective is to introduce students to the principles, tools and applications of epidemiology and to help develop their practical skills through a range of activities.

The module aims to elaborate on the theoretical background of health promotion with the aim of developing a critical awareness of the key concepts, debates and methods. The module aims to evaluate a range of health promotion strategies in different fields.

The unit, which is delivered online, introduces students to basic concepts and techniques such as hypothesis testing and confidence interval estimation in statistics. Students will learn some simple statistical methods and the principles behind some advanced methods such as regression. It will equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand and critically appraise statistics in research literature.

This module, which is delivered via online learning, provides students with an introduction to quantitative and qualitative research methods and to the types of skills necessary for the planning, data gathering and dissemination stages of health-related research. Topics covered include: -Research Design; -Methods of Data Collection; -Approaches to Analysing Data and Writing a Research Proposal. The course provides a foundation for further learning in specific research methods. It is primarily designed for new students beginning Masters courses in the Division of Population Health and there is an emphasis on research techniques used in public health and health services research (HSR).

This module , which is delivered online, provides the skills and knowledge required to conduct rapid assessments of the evidence base and then to apply these assessments to health management and/or clinical practice. It introduces and explains rapid review methodologies that seek to optimise the balance between rigour and relevance, ensuring the timely and judicious use of evidence that is both user sensitive and context dependent. This module will also address the growing demand for knowledge translation of research findings, specifically within the context of developing countries. A key feature is production of a culturally-sensitive action plan that takes into account local feasibility and implementation issues.

The unit, which is supervised online, enables students to develop an understanding of the processes and the skills required to undertake a supervised research project in health care. Having successfully completed the unit, a student will be able to: demonstrate researcher skills commensurate with the achievement of a Master's degree; demonstrate independence of inquiry; produce a cogently argued piece of writing that demonstrates researcher competence and the ability to operate independently; address issues of research design, methodology, ethics and theoretical arguments, and locate their own research in relation to these issues.

The module will cover fundamental statistical concepts, including both simple statistical methods and the more widely used advanced methods of multiple linear regression, survival analysis and generalised linear models. It will be a practical module, including the teaching of the statistical software SPSS, equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary to design and analyse a study to answer specific research questions; to understand and critically appraise the literature more thoroughly; and to present research findings in a suitable fashion.This is a Distance Learning version of the face-to-face HAR6045 module.

The control of communicable diseases is a key function of public health. This module covers the core principles of communicable disease control including infectious disease surveillance, outbreak management, immunisation programmes, as well as the prevention and control of infectious diseases. It will also present a broad range of common infectious disease topics including HIV, tuberculosis, meningitis, diarrhoeal illnesses and hospital acquired infections. Students will gain a firm foundation in both factual knowledge and an understanding of how to apply this knowledge for the control of infectious diseases at the population level. This module will be delivered by online learning.

This module integrates the principles of managing health care services and leading on rapid changes and advances in regional, national and international contexts. Principles of health management will be demonstrated through case-based teaching, in order to enable students to understand how to solve common management problems. Cases will be used to illustrate the complexity of the operating environment for health systems and health services. Students will be supported in developing critical thinking about the relative effectiveness of different approaches to management by analysing their own health care services within a broader cultural, political and policy context.

You will take 60 credits, including the two core modules listed and two optional modules. You can also choose to study one or more individual modules as a  Continuing Professional Development (CPD)  student.

This module, which is delivered online by distance learning, seeks to build on students' own experiences and knowledge of health policy and health systems. Over the course of the module, students will work individually and also in small online groups to develop a critical understanding of health policy and particular health systems, and to develop ideas and proposals about how these health systems can be strengthened, and who might benefit or not benefit. These improvements can be targeted at any combination of the regional, national, district, and community level. In this module, policy is understood in a broad way, as courses of action and inaction which shape health systems, and health systems are understood both as broad public health systems (including the social determinants of health), and as particular forms of organisation of health care (both formal and informal). The module is suitable for students with broad health and health care understanding, but also for those with more limited knowledge and experience of health systems.

The content of our courses is reviewed annually to make sure it's up-to-date and relevant. Individual modules are occasionally updated or withdrawn. This is in response to discoveries through our world-leading research; funding changes; professional accreditation requirements; student or employer feedback; outcomes of reviews; and variations in staff or student numbers. In the event of any change we'll consult and inform students in good time and take reasonable steps to minimise disruption.

All of your teaching will take place online. You will learn through videos, podcasts and online lectures.

Our teaching combines three key elements:

  • Authentic learning: We use real-world, real-life, up-to-date case studies, examples and scenarios. You can immediately see how your learning is applicable to your own working life
  • Social learning: We learn from each other as much as from purely independent study. This course uses multiple tools to deliver content and facilitate interaction with and between tutors and students
  • Flexibility: The majority of the online reading materials are heavily supplemented with videos, screencasts, internet-based materials, and the use of interactive online tools. Materials are provided in blocks usually lasting two or three weeks.

You will be assessed through coursework and online exams.

Minimum 2:1 undergraduate honours degree in any subject or a Medical degree.

IELTS 6.5 (with 6 in each component) or University equivalent.

About the Master of Public Health Program

The Master of Public Health is a Schoolwide degree program. The rigorous curriculum prepares students to become leading public health professionals capable of addressing current global health problems with multidisciplinary, evidence-based approaches.

During the program, students interact with public health faculty members renowned for teaching, practice and ongoing research around the world. In this diverse and collaborative learning environment, students learn as much from each other as they do from their coursework.

MPH students benefit from a flexible curriculum, online and onsite options, hundreds of courses taught by 1,500+ faculty and RA opportunities with projects in 67 countries.

The program culminates in a capstone project that applies competencies and skills acquired through the program to a public health problem relevant to a student’s professional goals and interests.

Prior Work Experience

2 years of full-time, post-baccalaureate, health-related work experience or a doctoral degree in a field underlying public health

This requirement is waived for medical students who have completed two years of U.S. medical school curriculum, those who have finished medical school outside of the U.S., and all applicants to the dual-degree programs. Exception: MPH/MBA candidates must have the two-year work experience.

Prior Coursework

By the time a student matriculates into the program (as opposed to apply for), they must have satisfactorily completed the following courses for academic credit and letter grade at an accredited institution:

  • One math course (e.g., Calculus, Algebra or Statistics)
  • One introductory general biology course
  • One health-related science (e.g., Microbiology, Nutrition, or Anatomy and Physiology) OR a second biology course

Standardized Test Scores

Standardized test scores (GRE, GMAT, LSAT, or MCAT) are  optional* for this program. The admissions committee will make no assumptions if a standardized test score is omitted from an application, but will require evidence of quantitative/analytical ability through other application components such as academic transcripts and/or supplemental questions.  Applications will be reviewed holistically based on all application components.

*The MPH/MBA with the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School require either GRE or GMAT scores. However, there are GMAT/GRE Waivers for select, qualified candidates (3 or more years of full-time post-graduate work experience at the time of the program start in July AND a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in undergraduate coursework or an advanced degree or professional degree (i.e., earned master's or doctorate). Meeting minimum eligibility does not guarantee a waiver and receiving a waiver does not guarantee admission.

Bloomberg School of Public Health

The Master of Applied Science (MAS) degree and related certificates are fully online, part-time programs designed for working professionals. Programs focus on emergent industry sectors in public health and healthcare that have a need for highly skilled professionals. By building on the strengths of the School, they provide unmatched opportunities for advanced training and focus on both local and global health issues. Students are prepared to create innovative solutions through multidisciplinary approaches that apply the latest scientific knowledge. All MAS programs will culminate in a final Integrative Activity. The goal of this activity is for students to synthesize knowledge and skills obtained through coursework in a final project that demonstrates mastery of program competencies, as applied to real-world public health and healthcare questions. Students can complete their degree program in as little as two years but are allowed up to four years.

The MAS post-baccalaureate certificates are designed to combine the academic excellence of Johns Hopkins with the flexibility of a fully online, part-time program. Students can complete a certificate in as little as one year but have up to three years if needed.

Online Student Experience

What to expect.

Faculty record course lectures in the School’s state-of-the-art recording suite. Each lecture goes through a comprehensive production process involving audio editing, technical writing, medical illustration, and quality assurance. Students are able to download videos, along with audio-only (MP3) and slide-only (PDF) versions, and text transcripts for offline review. This gives a lot of flexibility for students to choose the format that works best for their learning style.

Students, faculty, and teaching assistants interact with one another using a variety of asynchronous tools, including discussion forums, collaborative peer assessments, online document editing, and email. Real-time communication occurs during online office hours and/or LiveTalk sessions via Zoom web conferencing.

Preparing Students for Online Learning

Introduction to Online Learning is a free, mandatory prerequisite for all online courses. It is open to prospective students and designed to give a thorough view of what the online experience on CoursePlus will be like. It also prepares students and faculty for success on the first day of class since everyone is already acclimated to the technology. Introduction to Online Learning will allow students to:

  • Ensure all tools and applications are properly installed

The course takes between 1-4 hours to complete, depending on the student's skills working online. LiveTalks are online, synchronous learning events that occur in online classes offered via CoursePlus. There is one, optional LiveTalk during each offering of Introduction to Online Learning. The optional session lasts for one hour. In order to complete the requirements for this course, you may either attend the live, optional LiveTalk session or watch the recording of the session once it is posted. Everything is done online.
