My last vacation essay

Vacation is something wonderful and enjoyable and you can use it to spend enjoyable and useful times that make you feel relaxed  and all that gives you a push forward so that you can complete your work or study, all of this you will find here in My last vacation essay .

  My last vacation

When the exams are over, the parents start looking for places to spend their vacation with family. They need to take a break from work and the continuous pressure of life in order to try to recharge the body so that they can continue to work actively.

I am a person who loves to travel to different countries and to know different cultures and traditions. I have traveled in the past vacation to many different countries and I enjoyed very much to know about these countries. I will tell you about these countries  and the advantages of each country of them.

Jordan has a Mediterranean climate; in the winter, temperatures often reach 1 ° C, rain falls and sometimes snow falls;  So it is advisable to visit Aqaba and enjoy its warm atmosphere and beautiful beach, and visit the famous Wadi Rum and pink Petra carved in rock.

While in the summer temperatures reach an average of 30 degrees Celsius, so it is recommended to visit the mountain highlands in the Ajloun and Jerash, where the temperature is moderate.

The Egyptian Arabic Republic

It contains many famous and ancient tourist sites,  You can go on a trip to Cairo to enjoy the ancient monuments of the region, such as churches and ancient mosques.

Visiting the pyramids located in Giza is one of the greatest built by the Pharaohs. But avoid sunny and hot days to enjoy exploring the pyramids, walking the desert sands, riding horses and camels, and taking a tour of the Khufu ship or the sun boat.

I really enjoyed visiting all of these areas ,and took advantage of a lot of information that I did not know before, and I hope that everyone goes to these picturesque areas.

My last trip essay

My last trip was to the Maldives. I woke up one day to a loud voice from my mother who was happy and asked us to come.

So I told her what’s going on, Mom, she simply said (Write your name). We are going on vacation to the Maldives. Gosh, there’s this crazy, jumping, happy, dancing moment.

We all talked to my father before that we wanted to go to the Maldives, but because of his permanent work, we could not go. So it was surprising to go on vacation outside the town, especially to the Maldives.

I am very happy with this trip. I enjoyed a lot of swimming in the wonderful turquoise water, which you can see the smallest details through.

We stayed on the island of Mali, which is one of the most beautiful places in the Maldives. Where there are some exciting  areas .

I also enjoyed very much visiting Isidhu and spending all night there. The place was very cool, candles near the water and sitting on the floor everything was great. I liked this place very much and the drinks also.

At the end of the trip, we went to the National Museum, where I enjoyed learning a lot about some wonderful information about the former civilization of the Maldives and its origins.

It was great to have a trip like this and I hope to do it again.

Write a paragraph on my last vacation

My last vacation was so amazing. My name is(..). I study in class (..). I loved the last trip that I and my family took. We went to visit and entertain cancer patients. We agreed to go on vacation for my father and mother, and bring some presents for young children so that they are happy with it. We already knew about such visits from a family member.

My father told us that there is a social responsibility in our visits to cancer patients. And that there is respect for time and we should not prolong our visit. We must go with a smile and carefully choose the type of dress and speech so as not to affect the psyche of others.

My father also warned us not to show any kind of pity, because that affects the patient’s psychology very much. So it was very important that we pay attention to all these things.

We went there and all our concern was to add a smile to them and to help them through support and love. We spent the day with them but my happiest moment was when I managed to make the first person I met smile. That upset me so much.

This day is one of the most beautiful days for me, and it was a very useful holiday because it makes us feel the suffering of others. I would very much like to repeat this visit and support them a lot and make friendships with them.

Short paragraph on my last vacation

My last vacation was very interesting as I was able to participate in one of the activities that I dreamed of participating in for a long time.

I love to play tennis a lot. I joined one of the small clubs in my area to learn this game and train until I can become professional.

The coach told us that there is an upcoming tournament and we can participate in it to determine our level. So I loved joining so much and told him I wanted to join.

Indeed, I was able to participate and train well before the tournament to raise my level of concentration and improve my general level.

At the time of the championship, I was fully prepared, and I went and played with confidence and happiness, despite feeling a little scared, but I quickly recovered myself and managed to win and get the third place. I am looking forward to improving my level in the upcoming tournaments and achieving first place.

Paragraph about last vacation

Last vacation I was able to enjoy a lot visiting my grandfather’s town and gathering to attend a relative’s wedding. I enjoyed a lot getting to know my family members, talking and getting close to my ancestors.

They miss us so much because of the distance between us. We live in the city of (type the city name here). My grandfather lives in the city of (type the name of the city). So we travel there by train,

I really loved riding the bullet train and seeing the countries between us. I really liked the simple life in their city. There are many green spaces and wide spaces, and there is no big traffic congestion like my city.

I was able to learn to use the kite, and I found that all of my relatives enjoy playing it more than electronic games, and they race to raise it high in the air, and the person who can lift it the most is the victor.

So I liked it so much I laughed and had fun and ran a lot more than ever. I would very much like to try again.

Describe Your Last Vacation

My last vacation did not have many outings and activities, or traveling abroad due to the Corona pandemic. But I can describe it as wonderful because the family members were able to gather and enjoy some simple games and talk.

It was a special holiday filled with popcorn and sweets and watching modern movies. I enjoyed a lot of playing cards with my father and my grandfather who was a big fraud and I didn’t know about that. He made me laugh a lot and I learned some tricks from him.

I loved sitting at home this holiday too because I was able to help my mum make more food and learned some great new recipes.

I find that it is a wonderful vacation despite the absence of my friends around me or being in luxury places or tourism in other cities . We enjoyed the simple things and the holiday went by without any problems.

Essay about my last vacation

There is no doubt that I liked my last vacation very much, as I was able to get to know my family members from my father’s side during this vacation.

He had many relatives living in the same town but we don’t know each other or even know what we look like, So my father decided to take me and my younger sister and go to stay in the family house and invite the family to gather and get acquainted, so that the younger generations can get to know their relatives and their children, and make friendship.

So we stayed at my grandfather’s house near the lake and enjoyed a lot of barbecue and some fun activities. I would very much like to repeat this experience. It is good to feel that you are with your family and get to know them.

What i did during last vacation essay

Every year I learn a lot of experiences, both good and bad, from which I gain some experience. The last vacation was the best for me, because I was able to benefit a lot from it and learn some new skills that may benefit me in the future, such as learning how to prepare  sweets.

Last holiday I was able to participate in a training course to teach the preparation of sweets professionally. I was able to take back a lot from it as I learned to prepare all kinds of dough, learned how to prepare the cream and coordinate the cake to look completely professional.

I was very happy to learn this craft and I feel that in the future I can benefit from it in one way or another. I am thinking of creating a website or a YouTube channel and posting recipes and preparation methods to teach others Through it.

I work to improve my speaking and public speaking skills and gain some fame in this specialty. Maybe it will be my field of work in the future.

My last vacation with my family

It is great to take advantage of the time we spend in a gathering with the family, especially if it is long. I can say that the last holiday was a long time gathering with my family members due to the spread of the Corona virus.

Therefore, staying in homes was semi-compulsory by the state, and going out only for necessities, and preventive measures must be taken before leaving and returning.

Therefore, there were dangers to my father or mother whenever they went out to fetch food or any other living requirements. So I am very grateful to them.

It was great to be with my family for a long time. In the beginning, it was very difficult and there was some negative energy because we used to go out and do many outdoor activities.

But after a while, sitting became more comfortable, and we became involved in some home activities and hobbies, which helped in soothing the atmosphere, and getting out of boredom and depression.

I really enjoyed doing some activities with my mum like doing yoga, preparing famous meals and playing cards. I found her very cool at that and I didn’t know it, she always beats us and knows a lot of good tricks and moves.

Write about your last vacation

My last vacation was not very interesting, despite the slow return to life after the spread of the deadly Corona virus, however, many families still avoid going out, mixing, and exposing their children or themselves to danger.

Therefore, I could not do many of the normal activities that I used to do before, we only watch TV, play some video games and talk on the Internet.

Certainly there are some happy moments that happen inside the house when all the family members gather and prepare some entertaining meals. We can then perform some games or scenes to add a nice family atmosphere. But I can’t wait to get back to normal life and get out and discover life and gain some new skills and experiences.

My last vacation essay for class 5

My last vacation was special and wonderful. We are now in the summer. There are many places to go and enjoy, such as amusement parks, the beach, picnics in the streets, clubs and cinemas. It was a great vacation, I enjoyed a walk with my family, whether on the beach or in the city.

I learned some new games from my brothers, and my father and we raced a lot. He made me win in some races to make me happy with that.

I also enjoyed going with my mother to shop and buy vegetables, she taught me how to choose some good fruits and vegetables.

I am very happy when I feel that I have learned something new, so I feel that the time I spend is valuable and that I have a role in society. I hope to continue learning and developing.

How did you spend your last vacation essay

I spent the last holiday of this year wandering with some of my close friends, going swimming or playing some electronic games, or playing soccer. Some days we went cycling in town, talking to some friends.

It was a nice vacation and I enjoyed it a lot after what we went through from the Corona crises, not mixing, no wandering and sitting at home.

So it was great to go out and walk with friends and feel the return to normalcy again. And there are some group activities we can do.

How I enjoyed my last vacation essay

The last vacation was a lot of fun and had a lot of funny activities that I enjoyed. I also made some fun new friends, and got to hang out with them a few times, where we could go to the beach and enjoy the sunshine and  swim.

We enjoyed camping and sitting by the fires, eating some snacks while talking and having fun. It was definitely a great vacation more than  the past two years, breathing, meeting new people, gaining some new skills, developing myself, and feeling more confident and fun than I was before.

Essay on Last Vacation

Students are often asked to write an essay on Last Vacation in their schools and colleges. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on Last Vacation

Introduction.

Last summer vacation was a wonderful experience. I visited my grandparents who live in a small village.

The Journey

The journey was long but exciting. We traveled by train, enjoying the beautiful landscapes.

In the village, I engaged in various activities like fishing, farming, and playing with my cousins.

Lessons Learned

I learned about rural life and the importance of community. It was a different, enriching experience.

This vacation was not just fun but also educational. I look forward to more such adventures in the future.

250 Words Essay on Last Vacation

Last vacation was an amalgamation of self-discovery, adventure, and tranquility. It was a journey that transcended the physical boundaries and delved deep into the realm of personal growth and understanding.

Destination: Isolation

I chose to escape the urban cacophony and immerse myself in the serene embrace of nature. My destination was a secluded cabin nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. The majestic mountains, the lush greenery, and the serene silence were an antithesis to the bustling city life.

Adventure: Conquering the Peaks

The vacation was not just about tranquility, but also about challenging myself. I embarked on several hiking trails, each presenting its own set of challenges and rewards. The strenuous climbs, the unpredictable weather, and the beautiful vistas provided a perfect blend of thrill and beauty.

Self-Discovery: The Inner Journey

Away from the distractions of modern life, I had the opportunity to introspect and engage in self-reflection. I revisited my goals, aspirations, and values, and found a renewed sense of purpose and direction. The solitude allowed me to connect with my inner self on a deeper level.

In retrospect, the vacation was not just a break from routine, but a journey of self-discovery and personal growth. It was an experience that taught me the importance of solitude, the thrill of adventure, and the value of introspection. This vacation was a testament to the fact that sometimes, the most profound journeys are the ones that lead inward.

500 Words Essay on Last Vacation

Last vacation was an extraordinary journey, a voyage of self-discovery and introspection that transcended the physical boundaries of travel. It was a time when I stepped away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and dived deep into the tranquil ocean of solitude and contemplation.

Destination: The Heart of Nature

My destination was a secluded cabin nestled in the heart of a lush forest. The choice was deliberate; I wanted to trade the cacophony of city life for the symphony of nature. The forest was a living, breathing entity, pulsating with life, and it promised the serenity I sought.

The journey to the cabin was an adventure in itself. The path was not adorned with the conveniences of modern transportation; instead, it was a winding trail through the dense woods. The challenges of the trek, however, were a small price to pay for the reward that awaited. The journey was a metaphorical representation of the journey we undertake in life, filled with obstacles yet leading to rewarding destinations.

Life in Solitude

The days spent in solitude were a stark contrast to my usual routine. There were no deadlines to chase, no emails to respond to, and no social media notifications to distract me. The only sounds were the rustling leaves, the chirping birds, and the soothing whispers of the wind. This solitude gave me a chance to reconnect with myself, to introspect, and to explore the depths of my thoughts and emotions.

Learning from Nature

Living close to nature was an enlightening experience. Observing the harmony in nature, the synchronicity of life forms, the cycles of birth and death, and the resilience of life under adverse conditions, I learned invaluable lessons. I realized how we, as humans, are an integral part of this magnificent web of life and how our actions impact this delicate balance.

My last vacation was not just a break from routine; it was a transformative journey that enriched me with profound insights. It was a reminder of the importance of slowing down, of appreciating the simple pleasures of life, and of nurturing our connection with nature. It taught me that sometimes, the most meaningful journeys are not those that take us to new geographical locations, but those that lead us to discover our inner selves.

This vacation was a testament to the idea that travel is not just about visiting new places but about experiencing new perspectives. It’s about stepping out of our comfort zones, embracing new experiences, and growing as individuals. It’s about finding ourselves amidst the vastness of the universe and understanding our place within it. In the end, the essence of travel is beautifully encapsulated in the words of T.S. Eliot: “We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.”

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

Are you required to write an essay about your summer vacation or your holiday break? This can be a tough assignment to tackle at first glance. But if you think about it, there are lots of interesting things that happen on your vacation that others might enjoy reading about. The key to success is to zero in on the experiences, people, or situations that made your vacation unique.

Summer vacation can be busy or lazy, funny or serious. You may have traveled with your family, worked every day, fallen in love, or coped with a difficult situation. To start your essay, you'll need to choose a topic and tone.

Family Vacation Essay Topic Ideas

If you traveled with your family, you may have some great stories to tell. After all, every family is crazy in its own way. Want some proof? How many Hollywood films have themes about family holidays or trips? Those films are popular because they enable us to glimpse inside the crazy family lives of others. Alternatively, you may have a more serious story to tell.

Consider these funny topics:

  • Why I'll Never Go Back to (insert place name)
  • How (insert name) Drove Me Crazy in Five Days
  • Traveling to (insert city) Then and Now
  • The Hazards of Traveling With a (person or thing)
  • Why You Shouldn't Take a Dog to (insert place)
  • I Left (insert city) But My (lost item) Stayed
  • Why I Couldn't Sleep in (place name)

If your family vacation involved something more serious, think about one of these topics:

  • The Love I Left Behind in (insert place)
  • Saying Good-Bye to (insert person or place)
  • Exploring (place's) Secrets
  • An Emotional Trip

Summer Job Essay Topic Ideas

Not everyone gets to spend the summer having fun; some of us have to work for a living. If you spent your summer at a job, chances are you met a lot of interesting characters, dealt with complicated situations, or even saved the day once or twice. Here are some ideas for summer job topics:

  • The Boss's Day Off
  • The Customer From Hell
  • What I Learned from My Customers
  • Why I'll Never Go Into the ___ Business
  • Six Things I Learned on the Job

How to Write the Essay

Once you've chosen your topic and your tone, think about the story you want to tell. In most cases, your essay will follow a typical story arc:

  • The hook (the funny, sad, or scary sentence that grabs the reader's attention)
  • The rising action (the beginning of your story)
  • The climax (the most exciting moment in your story)
  • The denouement (the aftermath or ending to your story)

Start by writing out the basic outline of your story. For example, "I started cleaning a guest's room and found that they'd left behind a wallet with $100 in cash. When I turned it in without taking a single dollar for myself, my boss rewarded me with a $100 gift certificate and a special award for honesty."

Next, start fleshing out the details. What was the room like? What was the guest like? What did the wallet look like and where was it left? Were you tempted to just take the money and turn in the wallet empty? How did your boss look when you handed her the wallet? How did you feel when you got your reward? How did others around you react to your honesty?

Once you've told your story in all its detail, it's time to write the hook and conclusion. What question or thought can you use to grab your reader's attention? For example: "What would you do if you found a wallet loaded with cash? That was my dilemma this summer."

How to Write an Essay on How You Spent Your Summer Vacation

Last Updated: January 4, 2020

This article was co-authored by Alexander Peterman, MA . Alexander Peterman is a Private Tutor in Florida. He received his MA in Education from the University of Florida in 2017. This article has been viewed 52,907 times.

Writing an essay on how you spent your summer vacation is a classic way of starting a new school year. Think about this essay as an opportunity to tell a story about your summer while reflecting on the experiences you had. Choose a memorable moment you had this summer and start crafting your essay, giving as many details as possible.

Choosing a Topic

Step 1 Look back on mementos you kept from the summer.

  • These can also make nice visual aids if you are asked to present your essay.

Step 2 Make a list of the things you’ve done over summer vacation.

  • A list might be full of things like babysitting, attending a camp, working at a local store, taking a road trip, etc. This type of brainstorming can help you pick major events and other important moments from your summer.

Step 3 Write about a memorable moment.

  • For example, maybe you spent your summer traveling around Japan. Think of a memorable moment you had while traveling — maybe you walked up a mountain in the pouring rain — and write about this moment, adding lots of details.

Step 4 Create an outline...

  • For example, if you're writing about spending time at the beach, your outline could remind you to talk about the sandcastle building contest you entered, the dolphins you saw, and the ice cream you ate every day.
  • Details might be what the other sandcastles looked like, how far away the dolphins were, and what kind of toppings were on your ice cream.
  • Your outline is just to help you organize your thoughts — it can be written by hand or typed.

Crafting the Essay

Step 1 Focus on your feelings, interactions, and thoughts.

  • Instead of saying that you worked in a pet store, ate a PB&J sandwich, and walked home every day, talk about more than just your actions. You could talk about which pets are your favorites to work with, how it felt to eat the same sandwich every day, or what you thought about on your walk home.

Step 2 Use your 5 senses to explain your experiences.

  • Using sensory details like these will help your readers visualize and engage with your writing. These help your audience make your experiences feel real to them, even though they weren't there.

Step 3 Describe activities you did in each place you went.

  • For example, instead of saying “I went to the beach this summer,” try saying “I spent my summer swimming in the frigid water at Virginia Beach.” The more details you can provide, the more engaged your reader will be.

Step 4 Choose precise, descriptive adjectives.

  • Instead of saying “the burger was really good,” you could say, “the burger was juicy and filling.”

Step 5 Revise and edit your essay carefully.

  • Don't just rely on spellcheck. It will help catch some errors, but it will miss some things, too.
  • Ask a parent or other adult to read over your essay too, if you'd like.
  • Setting your essay aside for a little while will give you a fresher perspective when you go back to revise it.

Structuring Your Essay

Step 1 Start with a strong introduction.

  • Make sure your conclusion doesn’t just copy the introduction.

Alexander Peterman, MA

If you need to write an essay on how you spent your summer vacation, there are simple ways to take your writing to the next level. Choose a moment that stands out to you, like playing at the park with your friends or watching a movie you enjoyed. Think about all the feelings and thoughts you had, and use them to write sensory descriptions that will take the reader on the journey with you. Use your introduction to set the scene and draw your reader in. Then, use each paragraph to explore different aspects of your favorite moment. For example, if you won a video game competition with your friends, you can talk about the rivalry between you, the rounds of the game, and how you celebrated. essay on my last vacation in english

How can you talk about a vacation with your friend in English? You can ask questions to learn about how your friend’s vacation was. For example; Where did you go for your holiday? Did you have a good time there? What did you do there mostly? You should learn how to answer these questions and more in clear, natural English. And also, do you know the differences between holidays and vacations? This is a difference between British and American English you should be aware of. And both words have the same meaning.

You can start your answer with some simple language. You can think about how to give basic information about your vacation. You can begin your answer by saying where you went, how long for and who with. As an example; I went to the countryside with my friends for two weeks. I went to Italy with my family for ten days. My boyfriend John and I went to Paris for a long weekend. A long weekend means you go to Paris for three or four days, usually Saturday to Monday or Friday to Monday. Maybe because there’s a public holiday on Monday. So, can you talk about your vacation? Where did you go on your last holiday? Who did you go with and how long is your vacation? You can try to make your own sentences about your last vacation. If you need extra practice, you can write your sentence down. If you really need extra practice you can write down three different sentences.

Secondly, do you know how you can talk about what you did on your holiday? What do you like doing on holiday? Do you prefer relaxing on the beach? Or do you prefer a more active holiday with lots of activities and adventure sports? Or would you rather do something more cultural for your holiday? Whatever you prefer, it’s better if you can say something about how you spent your time on holiday.

Here’re some examples and some good vocabulary for you to use when you talk about a vacation;

I went to the countryside with my friends for two weeks. Mostly, we went skiing in the hills and mountains nearby. We also just hung out in the village, eating and chatting together. What do you think about hiking? The definition of hiking is going for long walks, often in the hills or the mountains. If you hang out, you spend time without having any specific goal. If you say I just hung out in the village with my friend, you mean that you spent time there in a relaxed way.

If you think about the second example; I went to Italy with my family for ten days. We did some sightseeing in Rome; Love fountain, coffee shops. Then we hit the beaches in Cinque Terre for sun, swimming, and cocktails. As you can understand, sightseeing means visiting famous places in a city. You can do sightseeing or go sightseeing.

essay on my last vacation in english

As an example;

if you do sightseeing in New York, you’d probably visit the Statue of Liberty National monument, Empire State Building, Central Park and so on. And also, saying we hit the beaches is a very informal way of saying we went to the beaches. You can also say we hit the nightclubs or we hit the bars. Using hit suggests you’re going somewhere to party and have a good time. So, you should not use it in other places.

One more example;

My boyfriend John and I went to Paris for a long weekend. We went on a walking tour of the centre and the Eiffel Tower. Mostly, we went to cafes and restaurants and sampled and ate as much of the local cuisine as we could fit in our stomachs. If you go on a tour, for example, a walking tour you pay Money for a guide. Generally, tours are in big groups. Do you like to explore by yourself or do you prefer to go on a tour with a guide?  The meaning of the sample in this example is to try many different things.

We sampled as much of the local cuisine as we could, which means that we tried many different dishes in this sentence.

Here’s a new step. How can you describe where you went on vacation? You can think about three adjectives to describe where you went on your last vacation. You should try to avoid general adjectives like good or nice. You should try to find more specific adjectives. Then, your answer will be more interesting.

For example;

I went to the countryside with my friends for two weeks. We stayed in a very nice village which is surrounded by nice mountain scenery. As you can understand, saying nice doesn’t say much. You can make his sentences better. You can say this; I went to the countryside with my friends for two weeks. We stayed in a very sleepy, picturesque village which is surrounded by some dramatic mountain scenery.

Do you know what dramatic scenery means? It means the mountains were very beautiful and impressive. Picturesque has the same meaning as beautiful. If something is picturesque, it means beautiful like a painting. I mean, you can use picturesque to talk about places and scenery. The meaning of sleepy is that the village was very peaceful and quiet. So, using more specific adjectives like sleepy, picturesque or dramatic makes your answer more expressive and interesting. And also, you’ll need different languages to talk about different places.

I went to America with my family for ten days. New York is a very cosmopolitan place but it could be a little overwhelming because there was so much going on. Then we went to Santa Monica, which has some stunning beaches. Do you know the meaning of the adjectives here? Firstly, cosmopolitan describes a city which has many different cultures and people mixed together. Secondly, overwhelming describes something which is very intense.

A city can be overwhelming if there are lots of people, sights, noises and smells all around you. And also, there’s so much to take in that you don’t know where to look. The meaning of stunning is very beautiful.

Here’s an example to practice;

My boyfriend and I want to go to Paris for a long weekend. It’s a fascinating place but it’s quite touristy, too. The best thing was the food which was very delicious and out of this world. Do you know what fascinating, touristy and out of this World means? Fascinating means very interesting. We use tourism to describe a place where tourism has grown too much. Generally, if you describe a place as touristy, it means that it’s lost some of its original atmosphere.

Finally, if you describe something as out of this world, you mean you enjoyed it very much and it’s really good. Now, you can try to make your own sentences to describe your last vacation by using at least three interesting adjectives.

Next, how can you describe what you liked or disliked on your vacation? What’s the best vacation and the worst vacation you’ve ever had? What made these holidays so good or so bad anyway. How can you talk about the positives and negatives of your holiday?

essay on my last vacation in english

I went to the countryside with my friends for two weeks. It was relaxing but by the end, I was getting so bored, because each day was very similar. Each day was very similar, meaning you did the same kind of things each day, so there wasn’t much variety from one day to the next.

The other example is; that I went to America with my family for ten days. I loved Santa Monica because it was like nowhere I’d ever been before. I wasn’t so keen on New York. It’s a cool place but it’s very big and noisy for my taste. You can use it like nowhere I’d ever been before means that the place you went to was really unique. Saying I wasn’t so keen on…to talk about something you didn’t like so much in the past.

I wasn’t so keen on the food in the restaurants or the museums in the city, which means I didn’t think that they were very interesting. Using “for my tastes” after you give your opinion shows that this is just your perspective. You can also use it after you give a negative opinion, to soften your idea slightly.

It’s a nice place but it’s too touristy and developed for my tastes. Using form y tastes makes the meaning slightly softer and less direct.

Now, you can make a longer answer. You should say where you went, who was with you and how long; What you did on your vacation; describe the place you went to and talk about what you liked and disliked.

I went to New York with a group of friends for ten days. We did some sightseeing in New York; The Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Times Square and so on. Then we hit the beaches in Santa Monica for some sun, swimming and cocktails. New York is a very cosmopolitan place but it could be a little overwhelming because there was so much going on. Santa Monica has some stunning beaches and I loved it there because it was like nowhere I’d ever been before. On the other hand, I wasn’t so keen on New York. It’s a cool place but it’s very noisy and big for my taste.

You can see how we use simple phrases and ideas to build a full, clear and detailed answer.

Man : What’s it like around there? Woman : Oh, it’s beautiful, especially on the coast. There are some really nice towns and you can swim and sunbathe and walk in the hills if that’s your thing. Man : Did you speak any Italian? Woman : No, not really. They get a lot of tourists around there, so they’re used to speaking English. Man : Bet the food was good though. Woman : Oh, you can’t even imagine. You even eat when you’re full just because it tastes so good. Man : Did you bring back any souvenirs? some nice wine? olive oil? an Italian boyfriend? That’s an excellent score! Congratulations!

A perfect score! Congratulations!

1 . Question

The ‘incorrect’ options may be correct language – but they’re not what the speakers say: your job is to identify what you hear. Sometimes the incorrect options are also incorrect language. Click ‘Hint’ for more details.

1. Which question does the man ask?

  • How was your trip?
  • How was your journey?
  • How was your holiday?
  • How was your vacation?

Hint: All four options are correct language, though they mean slightly different things:

– a journey is when you travel from one place to another; – a trip is when you leave one place, visit one or many other places, then go back to where you started (e.g. home); – ‘holiday’ is British and ‘vacation’ is American; they are similar to trip but with the additional idea that your reason for travel is leisure or relaxation – a trip can include work, for example.

2 . Question

2. Which expression does the woman use?

  • holiday of a lifetime
  • holiday of a life
  • holiday of a lifelong
  • holiday of a living

This is an example of collocation – only one answer is possible because the other three options are never used in this combination.

3 . Question

3. Which does the woman say?

  • They get a lot of tourists.
  • They receive a lot of tourists.
  • They accommodate a lot of tourists.
  • They draw a lot of tourists.

The four options all mean something similar – the key difference is register: how formal is the language? The version used in this dialogue is the most informal, because it’s a conversation between two friends.

4 . Question

4. Which does the woman say?

  • They’re used to speaking English.
  • They’re used to speak English.
  • They’re used to speaks English.
  • They’re used to spoke English.

This time it’s a question of grammar: the phrase ‘be used to’ means ‘be accustomed to’ or ‘be familiar with’ but there is a rule about the form of the verb that comes next. It’s the one used in the dialogue!

5 . Question

5. Which question does the man ask?

  • Did you bring back any souvenirs?
  • Did you take back any souvenirs?
  • Did you come back any souvenirs?
  • Did you go back any souvenirs?

The verbs ‘bring’, ‘come’, ‘go’ and ‘take’ can all be used before the word ‘back’. You can discount two of them in this case, because they don’t involve the idea of carrying something from one place to another. The difference between the other wrong option and the right answer is the direction of travel (home holiday).

Talking about Holidays – exercise 2 Grammar: word order in questions

The order of words in questions is one of the most confusing things in English. There are rules to help you – it’s just a bit more complicated than it might be in your language.

Read five rules about word order in questions; for each one, move the words into the right order to make a question that is used in the dialogue.

The capital letter has been removed from the first word to make this exercise more of a challenge, and so has the question mark after the last word!

1. If you want the answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’, an easy way to form a question is to make an affirmative statement, then add ‘right?’

The word order is: subject + verb + complement + right? Example: You ’re German , right ?

Unfortunately for you, this isn’t possible in more formal situations, but it’s fine in informal contexts like this recording.

Sort the words to form the question used in the dialogue.

View Answers:

2. If the context is not informal, you must use a different word order for yes/no questions:

auxiliary verb + subject + main verb + complement Example: Do you like sunbathing ?

The auxiliary verb depends on the tense – the example in the last sentence uses the present tense ‘do’ but the question from the dialogue is in the past simple.

  • any Italian

3. Some questions can’t be answered with ‘yes’ or ‘no’ – they are asking for information. In most information questions, you need an auxiliary verb and the same word order as the previous example, plus a question word at the beginning:

question word + auxiliary verb + subject + main verb (+ complement ) Example: Where do you live ?

Now make an information question from the dialogue.

Grammar Extra! Some information questions starting with ‘who’ or ‘what’ do not require an auxiliary verb – it depends on the grammar of the answer:   Q: Who painted the Mona Lisa? A: Leonardo da Vinci painted it. > The ‘who’ of the question is the subject of the verb in the answer, so there’s no auxiliary verb.   Q: What did you paint in your art class? A: We painted a bowl of fruit. > The ‘what’ of the question is the object of the verb in the answer, so you need an auxiliary verb.

4. You don’t need the auxiliary verb ‘do’ if the main verb is ‘be’, but you still need question word order, with the verb before the subject:

question word + be + subject (+ complement ) Example: Why are you interested in castles ?

A complement is something that comes after the verb to tell you more about the subject – e.g. ‘you’ (the subject) are ‘interested in castles’ – but not all questions have a complement. The question from the dialogue doesn’t have one.

The subject is two words: possessive adjective + noun

5. When the main verb is ‘be’, there is often a ‘dummy’ subject in English – that is, the word ‘it’ or ‘there’ which acts as the subject in terms of grammar but doesn’t really mean anything. When this happens, a complement is needed – because ‘it’ and ‘there’ don’t carry meaning, so something has to! The word order is the same as the last example:

question word + be + dummy subject + complement (+ adverbial ) Example: Why are there so many churches here ?

Adverbial information is optional – it adds detail about time or place.

Now make a ‘dummy subject’ question from the dialogue.

  • around there

There is a trap here: in some contexts, ‘like’ is a verb, but not in this case.

Talking about Holidays – exercise 3 Pronunciation: understanding stress and intonation

Stress and intonation are both ways in which the sound of what we say depends on meaning, but they’re not the same thing. Do you know the difference?

Listen to five excerpts from the recording and find the matching rule about stress and intonation.

We pronounce some words more prominently than others – they are a bit longer and louder – because those words put the meaning in the sentence: this is stress.

We say some phrases with a rise or fall in the pitch, to give a message to the speaker that is not contained in the meaning of the individual words: this is intonation.

1. Normally, nouns, verbs (apart from ‘be’), adjectives and adverbs are stressed because they put meaning in the sentence; prepositions, articles and pronouns don’t, so they’re unstressed.

Listen to the recording and choose which words are stressed.

https://www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Talking-about-holidays-stress-its-beautiful-especially-on-the-coast.mp3

  • BEAUtiful, eSPEcially and COAST are stressed.
  • IT'S, ON and THE are stressed.

2. If a speaker thinks some words are even more important than the other stressed words, they can make them prominent – that is, much longer than normal.

Which words are prominent in the recording?

https://www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Talking-about-holidays-stress-tastes-so-good.mp3

  • eat when you're
  • tastes so good

3. We use intonation to indicate to someone else whether we have finished speaking or not. Your voice should fall and slow down at the end of a sentence, but rise if you haven’t finished yet.

Has the speaker in this clip finished her sentence?

https://www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Talking-about-holidays-intonation-there-are-some-really-nice-towns.mp3

  • No, she is going to say something else.
  • Yes, this is the end of her sentence.

4. We also use intonation in lists. When you’re writing a list you can use bullet points – and when you’re speaking, use pauses and a certain intonation.

What do both speakers do with their voices for each item in the list?

https://www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Talking-about-holidays-intonation-list-swim-and-sunbathe.mp3 https://www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Talking-about-holidays-intonation-list-nice-wine.mp3

  • Their voices rise.
  • Their voices fall.

5. Like the grammar of word order, there’s more than one rule for intonation in questions.

In this information question, does the speaker’s voice rise or fall at the end?

https://www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Talking-about-holidays-elision-where-did-you-get-that-idea.mp3

  • Her voice falls.
  • Her voice rises.

Talking about Holidays – exercise 4 Pronunciation: elision and the glottal stop

When we put words together, some sounds change. One very common example is when the sound /t/ almost disappears – this is called elision.

Listen to five excerpts containing examples of elision and write the missing words.

They all contain a ‘silent’ /t/. Click ‘Hint’ for more information about what is happening in the mouth.

https://www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Talking-about-holidays-elision-we-went-to-pisa.mp3

1. We to Pisa and Cinque Terre.

Think of the word ‘football’: nobody pronounces a full /t/ because their mouth is already moving into position for /b/.

Some people put their tongue into place to make a /t/ but don’t make the sound; others do nothing with their tongue and block the sound by closing their vocal cords instead – this is called a glottal stop, and the female speaker in this dialogue does it a lot. It is not ‘incorrect’ or ‘lazy’ pronunciation: when the next sound is a consonant, dropping /t/ is a common feature of standard English. Even the Queen does it!

However, the speaker in this recording uses glottal stops so much that it sometimes occurs when the next sound is a vowel. Dropping /t/ before a vowel is not standard, but it is common for speakers with certain accents, such as people from London and South-east England.

https://www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Talking-about-holidays-elision-you-cant-even-imagine.mp3

2. Oh, you even imagine.

3. Where did you idea?

https://www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Talking-about-holidays-elision-it-was-amazing.mp3

4. – So how was your trip? – Oh, was amazing!

https://www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Talking-about-holidays-elision-no-not-really.mp3

5. No, really. They a of around there, so they’re to speaking English.

In the last gap, the final sound is /t/ but not in the spelling!
