As she gears up to secure the Democratic presidential nomination in Chicago this August, we examine some of Harris’ most significant accomplishments and policy initiatives.

Immigration

In response to immigration concerns, Harris’ call to action was the public-private partnership Central America Forward (CAF). The idea behind CAF is to support the creation of local jobs and other measures in order to slow the flow of mass migration.

CAF has generated more than $5.2 billion since its launch in 2021, and its partners include more than 50 companies and organizations that have committed to supporting economic growth in the Central America region. The entities represent the financial services, textiles, apparel, agriculture, technology, telecommunications, nonprofit sectors, and others, according to the White House.

Voting rights

Harris was at the forefront of the administration’s pursuit to enshrine voting rights protection throughout the U.S. according to White House transcripts . She pushed for Congress to pass the John R Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act , which would’ve extended the protections of the 1965 Voting Rights Act and required federal approval for some local election law changes.

In 2021, the bill did not receive the 60 votes needed to overcome a Republican filibuster, preventing the start of debate on the Senate floor where Harris would have cast the deciding vote in the evenly split chamber.

Harris visited a Planned Parenthood clinic on March 14, a historic first for any president or vice president while in office, according to previous reporting by USA TODAY.

Walking through the clinic in Minnesota, the vice president spoke with staff members and health care providers as part of her nationwide “Fight for Reproductive Freedoms” tour earlier this year.

Gun violence

In September 2023, Biden established the first-ever White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention to reduce gun violence, overseen by Vice President Harris, as announced by the White House.

The Office of Gun Violence Prevention builds upon actions taken by the Biden-Harris administration to end gun violence, which include the signing of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.

Heralded by the White House as the most impactful gun violence prevention measure in almost three decades, the now law bars individuals under the age of 21 from buying firearms, grants the Justice Department additional powers to prosecute gun traffickers, provides mental health services in schools to assist youth affected by gun violence trauma and grief and funds community-based violence intervention programs.

Maternal health

In her previous role as U.S. Senator for California, Harris introduced the Maternal CARE Act and the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act , which would direct multi-agency efforts to improve maternal health, particularly among racial and ethnic minority groups, veterans, and other vulnerable populations as well as maternal health issues related to COVID-19.

The vice president’s prior work on maternal and infant health care was a key component of the Build Back Better Act , passed in 2022. The legislation expands access to maternal care and makes new investments to drive down mortality and morbidity rates.  

Broadband expansion

In 2023, Harris and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo traveled to Kenosha, Wisconsin to celebrate the announcement of new electronics equipment production made possible by the Biden-Harris Administration’s “ Investing in America ” agenda and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law requires the use of American-made materials and products for federally funded infrastructure projects, with the goal of bringing hundreds of new jobs to the U.S. The law also notably includes a historic $65 billion investment to expand affordable and reliable high-speed Internet access in communities across the U.S.

“Our investments in broadband infrastructure are creating jobs in Wisconsin and across the nation and increasing access to reliable, high-speed internet so everyone in America has the tools they need to thrive in the 21st century,” said Harris.

In 2021, President Biden declared Juneteenth a federal holiday. Often referred to as the “Second Independence Day,” it commemorates June 19, 1865, the day when 2,000 Union troops reached Galveston, Texas, to announce that enslaved African Americans were freed by executive order two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, according to the National Museum of African American History and Culture .

“As a United States Senator, I was proud to co-sponsor a bill to make Juneteenth a federal holiday,” said Harris during the Juneteenth concert at the White House. “This [day], we will hold a national day of action on voting.  And I call on all the leaders here to please join us in helping more Americans register to vote.”

Bundalo recently cut the list of schools he is considering down to eight. Those schools include Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio State, Pitt, Michigan State, UConn, Xavier, and Texas. He has visits set for North Carolina, Michigan State, Ohio State, and UConn so Kentucky needs to get on this list. As it currently sits, Kentucky is behind in this race for Bundalo, but that is not to say Coach Pope can't get back in it.

It shouldn't be hard for Coach Pope to sell Bundalo a vision, knowing he is a perfect fit for the system he runs. If Kentucky is able to get Bundalo to take a visit, it would be huge for the Wildcats to get back in this race.

Coach Pope clearly wants Bundalo to be part of Kentucky's 2025 recruiting class, so it would not be surprising to see him ramp it up soon. If you're a Kentucky fan, Bundalo is a player who should be on your class of 2025 wish list.

Valarie Allman defends gold at Olympics discus throw final

Valarie Allman made it back-to-back golds as the American won women’s discus.

The Tokyo Games champion , a native of Delaware, had a shaky start, fouling the first of her eight attempts on Monday at the Paris Olympics Games. The 29-year-old landed the discus too wide to the right, but she redeemed herself in the second attempt with a throw of 68.74 meters that put her in the lead.

Allman's third throw was a little short, 68.06 meters, of her second --- but it still would have put her at the top of the lineup. She followed it all up with a 69.50-meter fourth attempt, which eventually won her the gold.

Boxer previously barred from women’s events wins fight after opponent quits in 46 seconds

A female boxer whose gender identity has recently been questioned won her first fight at the Paris Olympics on Thursday.

Imane Khelif of Algeria defeated Angela Carini of Italy after Carini quit 46 seconds into the match. Carini stopped the fight after only a few punches were exchanged, avoided shaking Khelif’s hand and then fell to the floor in tears. 

Khelif’s participation in Olympic women’s boxing has been scrutinized in recent days after reports resurfaced that she and another boxer, Lin Yu‑ting of Taiwan, failed to meet gender eligibility tests at the Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi last year. At the time, sporting officials alleged that the boxers failed an unspecified test because they had male chromosomes.

Khelif, 25, has always competed as a woman — including during the Tokyo Olympics — and there’s no indication that she identifies as transgender or intersex, the latter referring to people born with sex characteristics that do not fit strictly into the male-female gender binary.

Carini said she ended Thursday’s fight because she felt a “severe pain” in her nose. She added that she is not qualified to decide whether Khelif should have been allowed to compete.

“I am not here to judge or pass judgment,” Carini told reporters after the match. “If an athlete is this way, and in that sense it’s not right or it is right, it’s not up to me to decide.”

Others were less reserved.

“We have to pay attention, in an attempt to not discriminate, that we’re actually discriminating” against women, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni told reporters during a visit to the Olympic Village. “In these things what counts is your dedication, your head and character, but it also counts having a parity of arms.”

Several American politicians, including former President Donald Trump, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem , also shared their views on the match.

“I WILL KEEP MEN OUT OF WOMEN’S SPORTS!” Trump wrote on his social media site, Truth Social .

Khelif’s win also provoked responses from several prominent figures who are frequently criticized for their remarks about transgender people.

“Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling repeatedly referred to Khelif as “male” and called the match a “ brutal injustice ” in a series of posts on X.

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who recently drew criticism for his comments about his estranged trans daughter , also weighed in on X, which he owns. Replying to a post that included a video of the fight and read “Kamala supports this…vote accordingly,” Musk, who endorsed Trump last month, wrote: “True or let her deny it.” 

While most of the responses online appear to be critical, Khelif was not without support. 

Ismaël Bennacer, who plays soccer for the Algerian national team, was among those who defended Khelif.

“Full support for our champion Imane Khelif, who is suffering a wave of unjustified hatred,” he wrote on X. “Her presence at the Olympic Games is simply the result of her talent and hard work.”

Khelif celebrated her win on social media, sharing a photo of herself from Thursday’s fight on Instagram and writing, “first Victory.” She did not address the criticisms in the post; she has said her disqualification from the world championships last year was a “conspiracy.” 

In a s tatement Thursday, the International Olympic Committee criticized the backlash directed at Khelif and Taiwan's Lin during the Olympics, as well as the decision by the International Boxing Association, or IBA, to disqualify them from last year's Women’s World Boxing Championships.

"The current aggression against these two athletes is based entirely on this arbitrary decision, which was taken without any proper procedure — especially considering that these athletes had been competing in top-level competition for many years," the statement said, in part. "Such an approach is contrary to good governance."

The IOC noted in its statement that it withdrew recognition of the IBA last year. The relationship was severed following years of governance and financial transparency issues, as well as perceived instances of corruption.

Instead of the IBA, the IOC refers to the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit — an ad-hoc unit it developed — for its eligibility standards. In Thursday's statement, the IOC said, "As with previous Olympic boxing competitions, the gender and age of the athletes are based on their passport."

The Algerian Olympic and Sports Committee did not respond to a request for comment about the criticisms surrounding Khelif’s win.

Abderrahmane Hammad, Algeria’s minister of youth and sports, addressed concerns over Khelif’s gender identity Wednesday.

“I strongly condemn the baseless attacks on our athlete, Imane Khelif, by certain foreign outlets,” he wrote on X . “These cowardly attempts to tarnish her reputation are utterly unacceptable.”

In a series of posts on social media Thursday, the Algerian Olympic and Sports Committee celebrated Khelif’s win.

“We are proud of you and look forward to seeing you shine even more in the next stages,” one of the translated Facebook posts said.

Khelif’s next match is against Hungary’s Luca Anna Hamori in Saturday’s women’s 66-kilogram quarterfinals .

Less than two hours after mourners gathered in Southport, England, on Tuesday evening to honor three children killed in a brutal stabbing attack, hundreds of rioters flooded the streets of the already traumatized town.

More than 50 police officers were injured in the ensuing violence, as demonstrators threw bricks at a mosque, attacked the police, set cars on fire and damaged a convenience store.

Although some details of the unrest remain opaque, one thing is clear, according to the police, lawmakers and experts in online extremism: Disinformation and far-right agitators fueled the violence.

Supporters of the English Defence League, an extremist anti-Islam organization, were part of a large group that attacked a mosque in Southport around 7.45 p.m., according to a statement from the Merseyside Police Service , which covers the region.

The targeting of the mosque, and the subsequent riot, came after false rumors circulated on social media on Monday, soon after news emerged that a man had stabbed multiple children and two adults at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class.

The rapid spread of misinformation about the attacker’s identity left the authorities fighting a two-pronged battle on Tuesday: one on the streets of Southport, where the police were pelted with bricks and other objects, and another online, where lawmakers, local officials and the police seemed powerless to halt viral falsehoods.

More than 140 people have been arrested in the UK since Saturday night as rioting and violence swept the nation.

Police officers battled anti-immigration rioters as they set cars on fire, hurled bottles, yelled anti-immigration chants, and clashed with anti-racism protesters.

On Sunday, rioters also attacked a hotel in South Yorkshire that has been used to house asylum seekers, the BBC reported.

The protests erupted in the wake of the fatal stabbings of three young girls at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport, northwest England, on Monday.

The demonstrations have been organized and fuelled by far-right-wing groups, who have used social media to spread anti-immigrant misinformation.

It comes after false claims spread about the background of the suspect in the Southport killings, Axel Rudakubana.

Baseless rumors swirled online that Rudakubana was Muslim, leading to attacks on a number of mosques. Others falsely claimed he was an asylum seeker who had arrived in the UK on a boat.

Rudakubana was born in Cardiff, Wales, to Rwandan parents . The family was heavily involved with their local church, the Mirror reported, citing an unnamed source.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has condemned this weekend's attacks as "far-right thuggery."

"Be in no doubt: those who have participated in this violence will face the full force of the law," he added.

Cities such as London, Manchester, Belfast, and Bristol have been affected by the disorder.

At least 2 children killed in U.K. stabbing attack at dance class; teen arrested

Two children were killed and nine others wounded in a mass stabbing  at a dance school in the U.K. on Monday, police in the northwest England town of Southport said. A 17-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, and a knife was seized, police said.

Six of the nine wounded children were in critical condition, Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy told reporters during a news conference. All the children suffered stab wounds, Kennedy said.

Two adults who were injured in the attack were also in critical condition, Kennedy said. Investigators believe the adults were injured while trying to protect the children.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla were shocked by the attack, Charles said in a statement posted to social media , calling the assault "utterly horrific."

"We send our most heartfelt condolences, prayers and deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of those who have so tragically lost their lives, and to all those affected by this truly appalling attack," Charles said.

Prince William and his wife Catherine, the Princess of Wales, also expressed sympathy for the victims and their families.

"As parents, we cannot begin to imagine what the families, friends and loved ones of those killed and injured in Southport today are going through," the couple said. "We send our love, thoughts and prayers to all those involved in this horrid and heinous attack."

U.K. Prime Minister  Keir Starmer  called the attack "horrendous and deeply shocking." 

"My thoughts are with all those affected," he said on social media. "I would like to thank the police and emergency services for their swift response. I am being kept updated as the situation develops."

Police received reports about the attack at 11:47 a.m., Kennedy said.

"When they arrived, they were shocked to find that multiple people, many of whom were children, had been subjected to a ferocious attack and had suffered serious injuries," Kennedy said.

Kennedy didn't identify the suspect in custody. She said the teen lived in Banks, about a 15-minute drive away from Southport, and that he was originally from Cardiff, the capital of Wales.

Investigators were working to determine a motive for the attack, police said in a statement.

"The incident is not currently being treated as terror-related and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident," the statement said.

The children were attending a Taylor Swift -themed event at the dance school when the attacker entered with a knife and started to attack, Kennedy said.

"As a mum and a nanna, I can't begin to imagine the pain and suffering that the families of the victims are going through," Kennedy added.

North West Ambulance Service said eight people with stab injuries were transported to regional hospitals including a pediatric facility. The identities of the victims were not immediately clear.

Alder Hey Children's Hospital declared a major incident and asked parents not to bring their children into its emergency room unless it was urgent, the Reuters news agency reported. 

A local business owner, Colin Parry, who said he'd called the police, told the U.K.'s Press Association news agency he believed six or seven "young girls" had been stabbed.

"The mothers are coming here now and screaming. It is like a scene from a horror movie," he said. "It's like something from America, not like sunny Southport."

A parent who asked to remain anonymous told the Press Association his "daughter was in [the attack] and she was traumatized. She ran away and she's safe."
