The contribution of lean construction techniques in sustainable construction cannot be over emphasised, as sustainable development is now enshrined in government policy. In addition, lean construction is now faced with the challenges of sustainable development, continuous improvement, waste elimination, a stronger user focus, increased value for money along with high quality management of projects and supply chains, and improved communications. This paper presents an exploratory study from extant literature and the results of the use of questionnaire survey among construction participants to explore the contribution of implementing lean construction techniques in sustainable construction.

Design/methodology/approach

Surveys of UK-based construction professional were conducted. The data collected were analysed with SPSS 19.0 version software using the percentile method, Cronbach ' s α reliability test, Kruskal Wallis test, Kendall ' s coefficient of concordance and one sample t -test.

Results from this study indicate that there are several benefits associated with implementation of lean construction and sustainable construction. The overall perspective of professionals within the construction industry, according to questionnaire survey, shows that benefits such as improved corporate image and sustainable competitive advantage, improved process flow and productivity, improvement in environmental quality and increased compliance with customer ' s expectations are realised following integration of principles of lean construction and sustainable construction within construction industry. Just-in-time, visualisation tool, value analysis, daily huddle meetings and value stream mapping are the most common lean tools/techniques for enabling sustainability. This study also identified several areas of linkage between lean and sustainability such as waste reduction, environmental management, value maximisation, and health and safety improvement among others.

Originality/value

The originality of this paper lies in its consideration of lean construction principles to better understand its impact on sustainable construction. This research contributes to the awareness of the benefits that can be derived from the implementation of lean construction in sustainable construction within the construction industry.

Projects have been considered as temporary based production systems which need to be designed, produced and delivered within a specified time. It has been asserted by a number of researchers that fast, complex and uncertain projects cannot be managed through the conventional ways and that fast track projects with long, complicated supply chains involving many players and subject to multiple, extensive process design changes have complex flow management that have failed miserably. The conceptual models of construction management and the tools it utilizes (work breakdown structure, critical path method, and earned value management) have been criticized to be deficient in handling the present unique challenges of projects. As a result, the industry is characterized by a number of wastes including: overproduction, lead time, transportation, inappropriate processing, inventories, unnecessary movements, rework and making do wastes. Every construction firm whether it is big or small faces the issue of construction managerial skills. The productivity of construction industry has been declining over the past decades. One approach for improving situation is using lean construction management. Lean management is first practiced in the automotive industry as means to optimize the flow of production by reducing waste in any process in order to generate maximum possible amount of value. Lean wastes are (DOWN TIME) Defects, Overproduction, Waiting, not utilizing talent, Transportation, Inventory excess, Motion waste, Excess processing. The aim of this case study is to apply Lean construction methodologies on selected construction processes and the purpose of the study is to demonstrate its influence on cost and time of the project.

Lean thinking has now become a radical philosophy that has permeated and expanded in to several sectors other than just manufacturing. The concept of Lean thinking evolves the optimization of work flow related functions and the possible outcomes with its contribution to sustainable construction. Correspondingly, application of lean theories and principles in to construction sector has the potential to improve the quality of work, aggravate the function related effectiveness, minimize the cost components/ waste and increase the overall profit in both strategic and operational levels. Apparently, it appears that the lean techniques have immensely contributed for many possible cost reductions compared with the traditional project management techniques. However, few barriers for the implementation of lean principles are also on the contrary. The research aims to investigate the effects of Lean Construction applications while identifying the prevailing barriers related to the same. The research has exploited qualitative methods to explore the aforementioned research question. This paper presents an exploratory study from extent literature, predominantly based on a case study of a project management organization whereas the arguments were strengthened and underpinned by the formation of a conceptual framework to explore the contribution of implementing lean construction techniques in sustainable construction. The research findings would ultimately help different stakeholders on applying lean theories in to practice. This paper also describes the concept of value stream mapping, a lean construction management tool to reduce Non value added activity in RCC slab cycle and different ways to increase the productivity. This study also researches implementation of Pareto analysis in construction industry.

Many project management approaches have emerged to improve performance in the construction industry. Lean construction is one of the ways to design systems to minimize wastage of materials, time and effort in order to generate maximum possible amount of value. Lean Six Sigma is the combination of two well-known techniques Lean and Six sigma which focuses on quality improvement, reduction in variation and waste elimination. The purpose of this paper is to make an overview of the lean concept and also to include the barriers in implementing this approach. A detailed review of the literature has been done with the view of collecting relevant data necessary for the paper. A questionnaire survey has been conducted to find the barriers affecting its implementation. It was found that six main barriers are there in implementing the concept of Lean construction. These data were subjected to statistical analysis and necessary preventive measures are recommended for mitigating those barriers that were identified. By the implementation of Lean, it is found that, there is a significant reduction in waste, cost and time.

Since the 1940's, lean production principles have evolved and were successfully implemented by Toyota Motor Company. Lean construction is a production and management-based approach to a project. An increasing number of construction academics and professionals are storming the ramparts of conventional construction management in an attempt to deliver better value to owners while making real profits. As a result, lean-based tools have emerged and are successfully applied to simple and sophisticated construction projects. Generally, lean construction projects are easier to manage, safer, completed sooner, cost less and are of higher quality. Thanks to the success of the lean production system in manufacturing the construction industry has adapted lean techniques to eliminate waste and increase profit. It is a way to design production system to minimize the wastage of material, time, and effort in order to generate the maximum possible amount of value. The ideal meal will strike the right balance of protein, healthy fats and complex carbohydrates. Here’s how to make it happen.

Trying to make time for a nutritious lunch during the workday can feel like a losing battle.

Between meetings, deadlines and a never-ending stream of emails, many of us give in to the convenience of fast fare — or worse, skip the meal altogether.

But no matter your schedule, a balanced lunch deserves to be a priority. “Food is a biological need,” Maya Feller, a dietitian nutritionist in New York City, said, “and I know that sounds straightforward, but we all behave as if it’s not.”

When you skimp on lunch, your blood sugar dips. That zaps your energy, focus and stamina, said Lina Begdache, a dietitian nutritionist and associate professor of health and wellness studies at the State University of New York at Binghamton. And low blood sugar takes your mood “from happy and motivated to hangry and stressed out,” she said.

So how can you make time for lunch? And what should you be eating? We asked nutrition experts for their strategies — and asked our colleagues at New York Times Cooking for some winning recipes that you can easily prepare in advance.

It’s All About Balance

The goal with a midday meal is to consume the right mix of lean protein, healthy fats and complex carbohydrates. That generally works out to about 25 percent protein, 25 percent unsaturated fats and 50 percent complex carbohydrates, said Erin Palinski-Wade, a dietitian nutritionist in New Jersey.

“That framework will help you to feel full and give you sustained energy so you don’t have those blood sugar spikes and crashes later on in the day,” she said.
