📚 Step 3: Chevening Scholarship Networking Essay

Hi friends,

Our journey towards securing the prestigious Chevening Scholarship continues, and we're now on Step 3 of our six-part series in the Chevening Scholarship Essay Writing Guide.

Part 1: Crafting an Award-Winning Networking Essay

The Networking essay is your opportunity to showcase your ability to connect, collaborate, and engage with a diverse network of individuals. Here are some tips and an outline to help you write an award-winning Networking essay:

Tips for Writing a Networking Essay:

Outline: You should follow the standard rule of writing an essay.

Introduction

Start with a Captivating Anecdote: Begin your essay with an introduction paragraph that introduces the whole point of the paragraph, whether it is about leadership, networking, etc.

Provide examples in the Body : Add a real-life example that illustrates your networking prowess. Showcase a memorable interaction or collaboration that highlights your effective networking skills that have brought a change or something positive.

Highlight Diversity: Emphasize the diversity of your network. Discuss connections with people from various backgrounds, cultures, and professions. Diversity shows your ability to bridge gaps and work effectively with a wide range of individuals. It is good to show that your networks involve, professionals, experts, and politicians (if possible), Academics (such as professors, writers, researchers, alumni, or students), and volunteers (such as community, social, etc.).

Impactful Connections: Share stories of how your network has helped you achieve your goals or make a positive impact in your community or field of study. It is better to use the STAR method to write your examples. Provide concrete examples of how your connections have opened doors or provided valuable insights. To learn more about the STAR method click here .

Demonstrate Reciprocity: Networking is a two-way street. Describe how you've contributed to your network by providing support, mentorship, or assistance to others. Please do not write examples about the things you got or achieved through your networks .

Conclusion: Summarize your leadership journey and its significance.

Seek Feedback: Don't hesitate to ask your friends, mentors, or colleagues to review your essays. Their perspectives can provide valuable insights. You can book consultation sessions with me for one hour or more at www.sirathaidary.com or you can submit your application for review on the website.

Four Essay Topics

sample of networking essay

Leadership and Influence

Chevening is looking for individuals who will be future leaders or influencers in their home countries. Explain how you meet this requirement, using clear examples of your own leadership and influencing skills to support your answer. - Question as per the Chevening Website

Using the methods explained above (STAR AND SMART Approach), ensure that you speak on the times you have depicted leadership traits, the leadership positions you have occupied and the times you have displayed a position of influence. These can range from managerial positions, leadership in organizations (NGO's included), or in your day-to-day life. In addition, you can touch on what leadership ambitions you have and how this ties back to your community.

It is important to ensure that the examples are impact-driven and not only for self-gain.

Chevening is looking for individuals with strong professional relationship-building skills, who will engage with the Chevening community and influence and lead others in their chosen profession. Please explain how you build and maintain relationships in a professional capacity, using clear examples of how you currently do this, and outline how you hope to use these skills in the future. - Question as per the Chevening Website

Writing your networking essay is primarily about showing clear examples of the relationships you have built, how they were established, and how you have managed to maintain them. In addition, highlight how these said relationships have been instrumental in your personal development and the work that you do. Ensure that you are able to glean from every example the skill acquired and how these skills will be useful to you in the future as a possible Chevening scholar. This essay, in essence, is to show that you have the ability to use the opportunities given to you in a tangible and impactful manner.

Career Plan

Chevening is looking for individuals who have a clear post-study career plan. Please outline your immediate plans upon returning home and your longer-term career goals. You may wish to consider how these relate to what the UK government is doing in your country. - Question as per Chevening Website

This essay provides an opportunity for you to layout an immediate 2-year plan, and a 5 to 10-year plan. Your plans need to be attainable and should speak to your ambitions as laid out in your career plan. The most important tip for when writing out your career plan, is to ensure that when you touch on your professional experience, it not be written as though it is a Curriculum Vitae but rather speaking on impact, journey, and career trajectory. You too are welcome to link your journey thus far, to how this informs your next career move, namely pursuing a masters degree. You should depict an understanding of what you want to do in the future, how this is tangibly attainable, and what your ambitions are long term.

Studying in the UK

Outline why you have selected your chosen three university courses, and explain how this relates to your previous academic or professional experience and your plans for the future. Please do not duplicate the information you have entered on the work experience and education section of this form. - Question as per the Chevening Website

Do not duplicate your career essay in this essay, however, you can link the information. You will also be required to list the three universities you will be applying to, the name of the courses at the said universities, and why you chose the particular university.

Tip: Depending on which course you intend to study, google the top-performing universities in the said field to inform your university choice. Then ensure that the universities you would like to attend are Chevening partner universities, before finalizing your list of your three chosen universities.

Bonus: I have asked three scholars who have managed to successfully be chosen for Chevening before to assist with proofreading 3 prospective scholars essays before submission. Kindly note that these will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis. This available to a total of 9 prospective scholars and no more. Only the 9 successful prospective scholars will be contacted. If you are not contacted, unfortunately, the 9 spots were already taken.

To get your essays proofread - please fill in the form at the link here .

CHEVENING APPLICATION: NETWORKING ESSAY TIPS

*Chevening is looking for individuals with strong professional relationship-building skills, who will engage with the Chevening community and influence and lead others in their chosen profession. Please explain how you build and maintain relationships in a professional capacity, using clear examples of how you currently do this, and outline how you hope to use these skills in the future. (minimum word count: 100 words; maximum word count: 500 words)*

Chevening believes in making and maintaining connections. Truthfully, that is the only way to achieve your goals. It is one thing to know what you have set out to achieve. But it is a completely different ball game to manifest it into reality, you will need a strong network of people around who have the know-how or more connections with the know-how on the various aspects of turning your dreams into reality. Afterall, no man can be an island.

On that premise, I am sure you have networked once or twice in your career or personal endeavors for the furtherance of a set out goal. And those connections have a story behind them, and you have a tale of what you achieved due to banking on and utilizing your network. Well, there you are. now you just write it down.

Start off with your personal views on networking in achieving your dreams. What are your strongest networking skills?. E.g I mentioned my diplomatic skills.

Then mention how you form connections. And if there’s a chain, Chevening wants to know them all, e.g so and so linked me with so and so…

Next? How exactly did you utilize that connection? What were the results?

Top it up with how you plan on utilizing these skills in the future.

I know it’s just 500 words so pick the strongest story (stories) you have.

Make sure your networking essay is connected to your leadership essay.

USE THE STAR APPROACH:

Situation- What was that vision you had, the dream you wanted to realise?

Task- What was the task to tackle the situation? Did you want to organise a community outreach? Was it to get funds?

Action- How did you leverage on your connections? Or did you already have a person in your network who could help? How did you reach out?

Results – Now what exactly did you achieve from leveraging on your network to provide a solution for the situation at hand.

And voila! Your networking essay is complete!

CASE IN POINT:

Situation: I wanted to organise a community humanitarian outreach to IDPs

Task: Reach out to IDPs, Get NYSC’s approval, source for funds, source for clothes and food.

Action: My team member knew some people who knew the head of the IDPs, wrote a letter to NYSC, went round to all the major stakeholders in my place of primary assignment to solicit for funds, clothes and food. Pasted an e-flier soliciting for same. Utilized the vehicles and volunteers at my place of primary assignment, etc! Who I knew played more part in making it a success than what I knew.

Result: Reached more than 300 househokds. It was so successful my place of primary assignment requested for more interventions, received NYSC letter of recommendation.

Now that you know the basic foundation of what is expected from you for networking essay, what are you waiting for?

Writing Chevening Networking Essay

by Quva | Sep 7, 2019 | General | 0 comments

Now that you have completed your Leadership essay, you must have a fair idea of how this entire exercise works. Writing the next essay, that is, the Chevening networking essay can be trickier still, as the question of the essay requires a number of points, which have to be answered together in a coherent manner. Following is the statement for the Networking essay:

Chevening is looking for individuals with strong professional relationship building skills, who will engage with the Chevening community and influence and lead others in their chosen profession. Please explain how you build and maintain relationships in a professional capacity, using clear examples of how you currently do this, and outline how you hope to use these skills in the future. (Minimum word count: 100 words, maximum word count: 500 words)

To make the formulation of the Chevening networking essay convenient, it is a good idea to extract all the requirements of the question by listing them individually, so you do not skip any part. In this case, the question requires the applicant to:

  • Maintain professional relationships
  • Give an example to illustrate the aforementioned point
  • Outline how they are going to use their networking skills in the future.

Now, before writing, you need to identify people that can form your professional network out of those that you have associated or interacted with in your life. Those can include:

  • Former class fellows, teachers, or professors.
  • Former or current employees or employers
  • Any organization or professional bodies you have been a member of.

Once there is a list of the people who can form your network, you will be able to think of any meaningful professional relationships that you have with him, which will also bring to mind any occasion where you used your networking skills efficiently to achieve a goal. This means that this exercise will help you evaluate your professional network, and identify any examples that you can use in the essay to highlight your networking abilities.

As discussed above, chevening is looking to understand how you build and maintain relationships, so think along those lines. Think of what strategies you use to connect with people, and how have you stayed in touch with those people over the years? Do you interact with them through social media every once in a while? Do you attend any club meetings where you regularly interact with people? Think of the last person from your office that you communicated with, and remember how that communication took place? Was it over the phone, or via email? Did they ask for your help in something? You should also be thinking about what you hope to achieve by building these connections.

Choosing the example

When thinking of examples for the essay, think of events where you used your network to influence an important outcome or solved a problem. The way you narrate the example should indicate how strong your network is, and how you benefitted from that strong networking ability. It is important to filter out the least impactful examples, and only use the ones that really fulfill the purpose mentioned in the last line.

This brings us to the TRUE approach, much similar to the STAR approach used for the Chevening leadership essay. The TRUE approach will aid you in prioritising your examples and choosing the best one. It is as follows:

T – True. The example should be absolutely true. Do not be tempted to fabricate the ‘perfect’ example to include in your essay because you will be caught. Maintain your honesty and integrity, as you are expected to. R – Relevant. The example should be relevant to the overall theme of your essay. It is important to remember that the four essays should not be separate, disconnected essays on individual themes. Rather, all four Chevening essays should be interconnected. Be sure to avoid writing anything in one essay that could contradict something in another essay. U – Unique. Keep your examples unique. Talk about something that truly highlights your ability to network and mutually benefit from important connections. Write about a unique scenario that other people are not likely to have been in, which will make you stand out from other applicants. E – Exciting. Make the example exciting. Instead of writing in a complex, hard to follow manner, go for smooth narration, and use impactful words to make the story exciting. However, resist the temptation to be dramatic at all costs, and describe the events in a practical and factual manner.

Using this approach will help you write a persuasive essay in a practical manner.

Using your skills in the future

The final part of the essay is about how you are going to use your current networking skills in the future. Chevening is interested to know how you can use your skills to benefit and interact with the wider Chevening community. In this part, first talk about your contribution to the Chevening community while studying in the UK to let them know that you aim to utilize your networking skills to build new connections in the Chevening community. Secondly, talk about how you plan on using your networking capabilities to maintain a strong relationship between the UK and Pakistan upon returning home. You could talk about collaboration between the two countries on projects, for example.

Remember, keep the goal of writing the Chevening networking essay in your mind at all times. It is to demonstrate your potential to form strong networking relationships with people around you that are mutually beneficial, and to fulfill Chevening’s goal of fostering good relationships between the UK and other countries.

Introduction

Modern technology has brought tremendous changes in the way business firms operate. Processing information and arriving at optimum choices have become easy for customers as new virtual tools are taking their space every day. The development of mobile internet technology along with the expansion of the existing models of computer application has opened new opportunities and challenges in the current day business environment. The concept of virtual socializing is the basis for the operation of almost every kind of business irrespective of their size and location.

In Person Cold Calling

Today communication facilities like email, voicemail, and social media marketing have become the essential part of everyday life and business operation. Earlier, many salespeople used to visit prospects in person instead of calling them on the phone or sending them email. Meeting prospects door to door is not a common approach today in the context of B2B model. However, in person cold calling can actually be more practical than what people think today. For instance, a sales person who is the first one to approach a particular office or individual is likely to get higher business. I would choose this type of prospecting only if the prospect is of high potential.

Networking refers to a specific style of business activity by which a group of one-minded businesspeople make out and work on potential business opportunities. It is a sort of social network that intends to promote business networking activity. It helps people connect with other business people forming mutually favorable business associations. Several famous business networking organizations today take part in business networking activity. Networking, when followed, let the business people make new business relationships and create new business opportunities simultaneously. This is advisable when joined effort is essential to tap an emerging opportunity or if associating with a number of groups seems advantageous.

Social Media

Social media is the most potential platform for business promotion and marketing today. It offers excellent platform for promoting brands online. Social media like Facebook, twitter, instagram, Tumblr, Pinterest etc. offer wide exposure to millions of people across the globe, and therefore they are incredible resources for businesses of all sizes. Using the features like Geo-targeting, an organization can send messages to a specific audience or demographic. Facebook and Twitter have tools that let firms communicate the right sort of content to the viewers. Most of these sites allow users to target prospects by location, language, age and gender. For example, if one wants to send out a post to people who speak French, geo-targeting feature will make this possible. I will give high emphasis to social media for the promotion of my business in the future.

Referrals are good business policy for the promotion of a business online. Many companies have implemented this method to reach new potential prospects. It allows them to expand their customer base effortlessly. The existing customers who refer the service/product to their acquaintances are benefited in the form of commission, discounts, promotion or gifts. This strategy encourages the customers to do business for the firm further looking forward to their perks. At the same time it improves the company’s income too. This method will ease the companies’ marketing struggles. Also, product/service referred by an existing customer is more trustworthy to a new client. I will use this method in my web-based business activities through online referral programs. All the above prospecting styles have their own merits and demerits depending the size and nature of business. However, social media seems to have an upper hand in the context of changing business scenario.

Working as a social media marketing expert seems an interesting and promising career. Since the business world is highly associated with the modern technology, web-based activities have great scopes in the future. People today tend to rely on the internet for gathering information on any product/service before they decide to purchase it. Hence, a web version is vital for any business regardless of its size or nature. However, mere presence on the internet will not meet the requirements. Networking activity involves numerous tasks ranging from SEO, Social Media Marketing, link sharing etc. Although opening an account on social media like facebook and twitter is a simple task, from a marketing perspective, this involves thoughtful actions and regular actions. According to a suggestion by Cunha and Manuela (2013, p.243), a social network is a collection of individuals and groups of persons engaged in socialized activities with definite roles and purposes. In my opinion, social media outweighs other types of prospecting like in person cold calling, networking, and referrals. The main reason is that a business post on social media can reach millions of people in no time. And, an expert in social media can make use the full potential of this facility. It is easy for a marketer to target his right audience easily. The social media platforms offer location-based targeting for free. The facility enables easy and direct communication possible across the globe. Other types of prospecting are time consuming and they involve risks. For instance, in person cold calling, or telephone cold calling can irritate prospects and their response is unpredictable. Although social media also is vulnerable to abuses and bullying, one can easily tackle the situation. When compared to other types, social media allows one to interact with multiple prospects at the same time. One who is well conversant with the product/service can easily resolve customer complaints or clarify their doubts. This form of prospecting requires no commutation. A marketer can stay at his own office or residence while interacting with his clients. Business conversation is possible even when travelling. The client can be easily convinced of the benefits of the product/service once the system enables easy sharing of files, images, referral links, etc. Good communication can make the client feel the physical presence of the marketer. The most important thing in this aspect is the authenticity the company expresses on its web-based activities. Only a company that allots time and manpower to social media marketing can meet this requirement. Regular updation of the page is important. There should be a good volume of interesting posts every day. The posts should evoke viewers’ response so that they would engage in active discussion. Since each social media site has its own unique features, maintain pages on a number of such sites require great effort and knowledge. Note on the Essay

Essay prompt.

It was not a coincident that I was trusted to lead alumni division in 50th Dies Natalis of [NAME OF PROGRAM], since I was known as The Event Organizer back then. This event was aimed to celebrate [NAME OF MAJOR]’s milestone within 50 years and I was in-charge to develop strategic planning for engaging alumni and strengthening their connection with [NAME OF PROGRAM] Program. In order to engage nearly 4.000 alumni in meaningful ways, my strategy was to divide my team into smaller team based on the class of alumni, since I believed that different approach was required for older and younger alumni. Younger alumni are more likely to get involved in the digital world, thus I used social media campaign as a bridge to deliver clear, creative and impactful message. While more traditional communication was applied to outreach our older alumni, such as warm phone call and personal meeting. This strategy had resulted in attendance of 75% of contacted alumni in the main event of [NAME OF EVENT].

In this event, we would also like our alumni to give back to our program by conducting sharing session. From alumni list, I identified potential guest speaker for this session and figured out ways to access them. At first, I doubted my networking skill, but then I realized that building network is less a matter of skill than of will. Not only is it useful for learning directly from individuals I approach, but also the benefits of growing my own authority are just as powerful. My approach focused on their giving on a cause and I finally managed to set an agreement with 9 alumni, exceeding our initial target of 5 alumni.

To build mutual relationship with alumni after the event had ended, I regularly shared newsletter and sent e-mail to share relevant information and resource. No matter whom I am trying to build a relationship with, I will always treat that person as a friend rather than a business contact. However, it was still beyond my expectation that right before my graduation, my current supervisor who also happened to be one of alumni that I used to approach offered first career opportunity to me. By first-hand experience, I learned that effective networking can be achieved by developing relationships with other people and providing mutual support and encouragement.

Networking is nothing without added value. When I become a Chevening scholar, I will be advanced in many ways therefore it would be my priority to give back to Chevening and society. As a scholar, my strategy will be to engage other scholars and alumni who share similar passions in energy and environment to find global solutions that can be applied locally. Utilizing support from impactful Chevening alumni network and my network (LIST OF NETWORK), I plan to initiate Energy101 class to educate youth about energy and environment. Lastly, as a Chevening Alumni, I will actively participate in Indonesian Chevening Alumni Association to strengthen relationships among the United Kingdom, alumni and scholars.

Review from Stefa Yuwiko – University of Newcastle Australia Recipient of Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship & Juris Doctor (JD) Scholarship for International Students

  • However, please remember that you need to plan your work with the basic rule of making a paragraph (i.e. main sentence, supporting sentences and example in needed)
  • Look at the keywords that are in the prompt and deserve some highlights: Chevening is looking for individuals with strong networking skills, who will engage with the Chevening community and influence and lead others in their chosen profession. It would be good if you can organise your ideas coherently (e.g. strong networking skills (1st paragraph), followed by engagement, influence and leading example in the next paragraph)
  • I notice that the way you write it down isn’t an academic writing. Please make sure that it is okay for you to do that.
  • I notice that you have too many passive sentences; it is always good to have more active sentences.
  • Please check spelling errors as well with regard to single/plural noun.

NPR is defending its journalism and integrity after a senior editor wrote an essay accusing it of losing the public's trust.

NPR's top news executive defended its journalism and its commitment to reflecting a diverse array of views on Tuesday after a senior NPR editor wrote a broad critique of how the network has covered some of the most important stories of the age.

"An open-minded spirit no longer exists within NPR, and now, predictably, we don't have an audience that reflects America," writes Uri Berliner.

A strategic emphasis on diversity and inclusion on the basis of race, ethnicity and sexual orientation, promoted by NPR's former CEO, John Lansing, has fed "the absence of viewpoint diversity," Berliner writes.

NPR's chief news executive, Edith Chapin, wrote in a memo to staff Tuesday afternoon that she and the news leadership team strongly reject Berliner's assessment.

"We're proud to stand behind the exceptional work that our desks and shows do to cover a wide range of challenging stories," she wrote. "We believe that inclusion — among our staff, with our sourcing, and in our overall coverage — is critical to telling the nuanced stories of this country and our world."

She added, "None of our work is above scrutiny or critique. We must have vigorous discussions in the newsroom about how we serve the public as a whole."

A spokesperson for NPR said Chapin, who also serves as the network's chief content officer, would have no further comment.

Praised by NPR's critics

Berliner is a senior editor on NPR's Business Desk. (Disclosure: I, too, am part of the Business Desk, and Berliner has edited many of my past stories. He did not see any version of this article or participate in its preparation before it was posted publicly.)

Berliner's essay , titled "I've Been at NPR for 25 years. Here's How We Lost America's Trust," was published by The Free Press, a website that has welcomed journalists who have concluded that mainstream news outlets have become reflexively liberal.

Berliner writes that as a Subaru-driving, Sarah Lawrence College graduate who "was raised by a lesbian peace activist mother ," he fits the mold of a loyal NPR fan.

Yet Berliner says NPR's news coverage has fallen short on some of the most controversial stories of recent years, from the question of whether former President Donald Trump colluded with Russia in the 2016 election, to the origins of the virus that causes COVID-19, to the significance and provenance of emails leaked from a laptop owned by Hunter Biden weeks before the 2020 election. In addition, he blasted NPR's coverage of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

On each of these stories, Berliner asserts, NPR has suffered from groupthink due to too little diversity of viewpoints in the newsroom.

The essay ricocheted Tuesday around conservative media , with some labeling Berliner a whistleblower . Others picked it up on social media, including Elon Musk, who has lambasted NPR for leaving his social media site, X. (Musk emailed another NPR reporter a link to Berliner's article with a gibe that the reporter was a "quisling" — a World War II reference to someone who collaborates with the enemy.)

When asked for further comment late Tuesday, Berliner declined, saying the essay spoke for itself.

The arguments he raises — and counters — have percolated across U.S. newsrooms in recent years. The #MeToo sexual harassment scandals of 2016 and 2017 forced newsrooms to listen to and heed more junior colleagues. The social justice movement prompted by the killing of George Floyd in 2020 inspired a reckoning in many places. Newsroom leaders often appeared to stand on shaky ground.

Leaders at many newsrooms, including top editors at The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times , lost their jobs. Legendary Washington Post Executive Editor Martin Baron wrote in his memoir that he feared his bonds with the staff were "frayed beyond repair," especially over the degree of self-expression his journalists expected to exert on social media, before he decided to step down in early 2021.

Since then, Baron and others — including leaders of some of these newsrooms — have suggested that the pendulum has swung too far.

New York Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger warned last year against journalists embracing a stance of what he calls "one-side-ism": "where journalists are demonstrating that they're on the side of the righteous."

"I really think that that can create blind spots and echo chambers," he said.

Internal arguments at The Times over the strength of its reporting on accusations that Hamas engaged in sexual assaults as part of a strategy for its Oct. 7 attack on Israel erupted publicly . The paper conducted an investigation to determine the source of a leak over a planned episode of the paper's podcast The Daily on the subject, which months later has not been released. The newsroom guild accused the paper of "targeted interrogation" of journalists of Middle Eastern descent.

Heated pushback in NPR's newsroom

Given Berliner's account of private conversations, several NPR journalists question whether they can now trust him with unguarded assessments about stories in real time. Others express frustration that he had not sought out comment in advance of publication. Berliner acknowledged to me that for this story, he did not seek NPR's approval to publish the piece, nor did he give the network advance notice.

Some of Berliner's NPR colleagues are responding heatedly. Fernando Alfonso, a senior supervising editor for digital news, wrote that he wholeheartedly rejected Berliner's critique of the coverage of the Israel-Hamas conflict, for which NPR's journalists, like their peers, periodically put themselves at risk.

Alfonso also took issue with Berliner's concern over the focus on diversity at NPR.

"As a person of color who has often worked in newsrooms with little to no people who look like me, the efforts NPR has made to diversify its workforce and its sources are unique and appropriate given the news industry's long-standing lack of diversity," Alfonso says. "These efforts should be celebrated and not denigrated as Uri has done."

After this story was first published, Berliner contested Alfonso's characterization, saying his criticism of NPR is about the lack of diversity of viewpoints, not its diversity itself.

"I never criticized NPR's priority of achieving a more diverse workforce in terms of race, ethnicity and sexual orientation. I have not 'denigrated' NPR's newsroom diversity goals," Berliner said. "That's wrong."

Questions of diversity

Under former CEO John Lansing, NPR made increasing diversity, both of its staff and its audience, its "North Star" mission. Berliner says in the essay that NPR failed to consider broader diversity of viewpoint, noting, "In D.C., where NPR is headquartered and many of us live, I found 87 registered Democrats working in editorial positions and zero Republicans."

Berliner cited audience estimates that suggested a concurrent falloff in listening by Republicans. (The number of people listening to NPR broadcasts and terrestrial radio broadly has declined since the start of the pandemic.)

Former NPR vice president for news and ombudsman Jeffrey Dvorkin tweeted , "I know Uri. He's not wrong."

Others questioned Berliner's logic. "This probably gets causality somewhat backward," tweeted Semafor Washington editor Jordan Weissmann . "I'd guess that a lot of NPR listeners who voted for [Mitt] Romney have changed how they identify politically."

Similarly, Nieman Lab founder Joshua Benton suggested the rise of Trump alienated many NPR-appreciating Republicans from the GOP.

In recent years, NPR has greatly enhanced the percentage of people of color in its workforce and its executive ranks. Four out of 10 staffers are people of color; nearly half of NPR's leadership team identifies as Black, Asian or Latino.

"The philosophy is: Do you want to serve all of America and make sure it sounds like all of America, or not?" Lansing, who stepped down last month, says in response to Berliner's piece. "I'd welcome the argument against that."

"On radio, we were really lagging in our representation of an audience that makes us look like what America looks like today," Lansing says. The U.S. looks and sounds a lot different than it did in 1971, when NPR's first show was broadcast, Lansing says.

A network spokesperson says new NPR CEO Katherine Maher supports Chapin and her response to Berliner's critique.

The spokesperson says that Maher "believes that it's a healthy thing for a public service newsroom to engage in rigorous consideration of the needs of our audiences, including where we serve our mission well and where we can serve it better."

Disclosure: This story was reported and written by NPR Media Correspondent David Folkenflik and edited by Deputy Business Editor Emily Kopp and Managing Editor Gerry Holmes. Under NPR's protocol for reporting on itself, no NPR corporate official or news executive reviewed this story before it was posted publicly.

Turmoil at NPR after editor rips network for political bias

The public radio network is being targeted by conservative activists over the editor’s essay, which many staffers say is misleading and inaccurate.

sample of networking essay

Uri Berliner had worked at NPR for a quarter-century when he wrote the essay that would abruptly end his tenure. On April 9, the Free Press published 3,500 words from Berliner, a senior business editor, about how the public radio network is guilty of journalistic malpractice — for conforming to a politically liberal worldview at the expense of fairness and accuracy.

“It’s true NPR has always had a liberal bent, but during most of my tenure here, an open-minded, curious culture prevailed,” Berliner wrote. “We were nerdy, but not knee-jerk, activist, or scolding. In recent years, however, that has changed.”

The essay, whose arguments were disputed by NPR management and many staffers, plunged the network into a week-long public controversy.

Last week NPR’s new CEO, Katherine Maher, indirectly referenced Berliner’s essay in a note to staff that NPR also published online. “Asking a question about whether we’re living up to our mission should always be fair game: after all, journalism is nothing if not hard questions,” she wrote. “Questioning whether our people are serving our mission with integrity, based on little more than the recognition of their identity, is profoundly disrespectful, hurtful, and demeaning.”

The drama reached a pinnacle Wednesday, when Berliner resigned while taking a shot at Maher.

In his resignation letter, Berliner called NPR “a great American institution” that should not be defunded. “I respect the integrity of my colleagues and wish for NPR to thrive and do important journalism,” he wrote in the letter, posted on his X account. “But I cannot work in a newsroom where I am disparaged by a new CEO whose divisive views confirm the very problems I cite in my Free Press essay.”

Berliner’s comments have angered many of his now-former colleagues, who dismissed as inaccurate his depiction of their workplace and who say his faulty criticisms have been weaponized against them.

Berliner’s essay is titled “ I’ve Been at NPR for 25 Years. Here’s How We Lost America’s Trust .” On its face, it seemed to confirm the worst suspicions held by NPR’s critics on the right: that the legendary media organization had an ideological, progressive agenda that dictates its journalism. The Free Press is an online publication started by journalist Bari Weiss, whose own resignation from the New York Times in 2020 was used by conservative politicians as evidence that the Times stifled certain ideas and ideologies; Weiss accused the Times of catering to a rigid, politically left-leaning worldview and of refusing to defend her against online “bullies” when she expressed views to the contrary. Berliner’s essay was accompanied by several glossy portraits and a nearly hour-long podcast interview with Weiss. He also went on NewsNation, where the host Chris Cuomo — who had been cast out from CNN for crossing ethical lines to help his governor-brother — called Berliner a “whistleblower.”

Initially, Berliner was suspended for not getting approval for doing work for another publication. NPR policy requires receiving written permission from supervisors “for all outside freelance and journalistic work,” according to the employee handbook.

An NPR spokeswoman said Wednesday that the network does not comment on personnel matters. Berliner declined The Washington Post’s request for further comment.

In an interview Tuesday with NPR’s David Folkenflik — whose work is also criticized in the Free Press essay — Berliner said “we have great journalists here. If they shed their opinions and did the great journalism they’re capable of, this would be a much more interesting and fulfilling organization for our listeners.”

Berliner’s future at NPR became an open question. NPR leaders were pressed by staff in meetings this week as to why he was still employed there. And some reporters made clear they didn’t want to be edited by Berliner anymore because they now questioned his journalistic judgment, said one prominent NPR journalist, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to preserve relationships. “How are you supposed to have honest debates about coverage if you think it’s going to be fodder for the point he’s trying to make?” the staffer said.

Berliner had written that “there’s an unspoken consensus” about stories to pursue at NPR — “of supposed racism, transphobia, signs of the climate apocalypse, Israel doing something bad, and the dire threat of Republican policies” — and that the network operated without friction, “almost like an assembly line.”

Several prominent NPR journalists countered that impression. “We have strong, heated editorial debates every day to try and get the most appropriate language and nuanced reporting in a landscape that is divisive and difficult to work in as a journalist,” Leila Fadel, host of “Morning Edition,” told The Post. “Media and free independent press are often under attack for the fact-based reporting that we do.” She called Berliner’s essay “a bad-faith effort” and a “factually inaccurate take on our work that was filled with omissions to back his arguments.”

Other staffers noted that Berliner did not seek comment from NPR for his piece. No news organization is above reproach, “Weekend Edition” host Ayesha Rascoe told The Post, but someone should not “be able to tear down an entire organization’s work without any sort of response or context provided, or pushback.” There are many legitimate critiques to make of NPR’s coverage, she added, “but the way this has been done — it’s to invalidate all the work NPR does.”

NPR is known to have a very collegial culture, and the manner in which Berliner aired his criticism — perhaps even more than the substance of it — is what upset so many of his co-workers, according to one staffer.

“Morning Edition” host Steve Inskeep, writing on his Substack on Tuesday , fact-checked or contextualized several of the arguments Berliner made. For instance: Berliner wrote that he once asked “why we keep using that word that many Hispanics hate — Latinx.” Inskeep said he searched 90 days of NPR’s content and found “Latinx” was used nine times — “usually by a guest” — compared to the nearly 400 times “Latina” and “Latino” were used.

“This article needed a better editor,” Inskeep wrote. “I don’t know who, if anyone, edited Uri’s story, but they let him publish an article that discredited itself. ... A careful read of the article shows many sweeping statements for which the writer is unable to offer evidence.”

This week conservative activist Christopher Rufo — who rose to fame for targeting “critical race theory,” and whose scrutiny of Harvard president Claudine Gay preceded her resignation — set his sights on Maher, surfacing old social-media posts she wrote before she joined the news organization. In one 2020 tweet, she referred to Trump as a “deranged racist.” Others posts show her wearing a Biden hat, or wistfully daydreaming about hanging out with Kamala D. Harris. Rufo has called for Maher’s resignation.

“In America everyone is entitled to free speech as a private citizen,” Maher wrote in a statement to The Post, when asked about the social-media posts. “What matters is NPR’s work and my commitment as its CEO: public service, editorial independence, and the mission to serve all of the American public.”

Maher, who started her job as NPR CEO last month, previously was the head of the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit that operates the online encyclopedia Wikipedia. An NPR spokesperson said in a statement Tuesday that Maher “was not working in journalism at the time” of the social media posts; she was “exercising her first amendment right to express herself like any other American citizen,” and “the CEO is not involved in editorial decisions.”

In a statement, an NPR spokesperson described the outcry over Maher’s old posts as “a bad faith attack that follows an established playbook, as online actors with explicit agendas work to discredit independent news organizations.”

Meanwhile, some NPR staffers want a more forceful defense of NPR journalism by management. An internal letter — signed by about 50 NPR staffers as of Wednesday afternoon — called on Maher and NPR editor in chief Edith Chapin to “publicly and directly” call out Berliner’s “factual inaccuracies and elisions.”

In the essay, Berliner accuses NPR of mishandling three major stories: the allegations of the 2016 Trump campaign’s collusion with Russia, the origins of the coronavirus , and the authenticity and relevance of Hunter Biden’s laptop. Berliner’s critics note that he didn’t oversee coverage of these stories. They also say that his essay indirectly maligns employee affinity groups — he name-checks groups for Muslim, Jewish, queer and Black employees, which he wrote “reflect broader movement in the culture of people clustering together based on ideology or a characteristic at birth.” (Berliner belonged to the group for Jewish employees, according to an NPR staffer with knowledge of membership.) He also writes, without proper context, his critics say, about NPR’s newsroom — that NPR’s D.C. headquarters is politically homogenous because it employs 87 registered Democrats and zero Republicans.

Tony Cavin, NPR’s managing editor of standards and practices, told The Post that “I have no idea where he got that number,” that NPR’s newsroom has 660 employees, and that “I know a number of our hosts and staff are registered as independents.” That includes Inskeep, who, on his Substack, backed up Cavin’s assessment.

Berliner also wrote that, during the administration of Donald Trump , NPR “hitched our wagon” to top Trump antagonist Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) by interviewing him 25 times about Trump and Russia. Cavin told The Post NPR aired 900 interviews with lawmakers during the same period of time, “so that’s 3 percent. He’s a business reporter, he knows about statistics and it seems he’s selectively using statistics.”

Cavin said some inside the organization agree with points Berliner made, even if they “don’t like the way he went about it. The irony of this is it tells you how diverse as an organization we are, in ideological terms.”

“There are a few bits of truth in this,” NPR international correspondent Eyder Peralta wrote on Facebook. But he said the essay “uses a selecting reading to serve the author’s own world views” and paints with “too broad a brush.”

“I have covered wars, I have been thrown in jail for my work,” Peralta told The Post, “and for him to question part of what is in our nature, which is intellectual curiosity and that we follow our noses where they lead us, that hurts. And I think that damages NPR.”

Some staffers have also been attacked online since the essay’s publication. Rascoe, who, as a Black woman host for NPR, says she’s no stranger to online vitriol, but one message after Berliner’s essay labeled her as a “DEI hire” who has “never read a book in her life.”

“What stung about this one was it came on the basis of a supposed colleague’s op-ed,” whose words were “being used as fodder to attack me,” Rascoe said. “And my concern is not about me, but all the younger journalists who don’t have the platform I have and who will be attacked and their integrity questioned simply on the basis of who they are.”

NPR, like much of the media industry, has struggled in recent years with a declining audience and a tough ad market. NPR laid off 100 workers in 2023, one of its largest layoffs ever , citing fewer sponsorships and a projected $30 million decline in revenue.

Going forward, some staffers worry about the ramifications of Berliner’s essay and the reactions to it. The open letter to Maher and Chapin said that “sending the message that a public essay is the easiest way to make change is setting a bad precedent, regardless of the ideologies being expressed.”

NPR suspends editor who accused network of liberal bias

N PR has suspended senior editor Uri Berliner after he wrote an essay deriding the network as having "lost its way" with a dominant "progressive worldview," infuriating his colleagues and delighting conservatives.

Why it matters : Berliner's essay published by The Free Press stirred up a fresh debate around trust in media and has been fuel for critics who've long argued public media has moved too far left.

  • NPR's David Folkenflik reported Tuesday that Berliner's five-day suspension without pay began Friday.
  • According to the network, Berliner did not seek approval for outside work as is required of its journalists.
  • After his essay was published, NPR's chief content officer Edith Chapin defended the network in a memo to staff, saying she and leadership "strongly disagree with Uri's assessment of the quality of our journalism and the integrity of our newsroom processes."

Catch up quick : Berliner's essay was published earlier this month on The Free Press, which was founded by New York Times defector Bari Weiss. He also appeared on a podcast "Honestly with Bari Weiss."

  • The 3,500-word piece takes aim at NPR's coverage on topics including trans rights, COVID and the Israel-Hamas war.
  • It also calls out NPR's coverage of "Russiagate," or allegations that Donald Trump colluded with Russia ahead of the 2016 election and the New York Post coverage of Hunter Biden. (He notes in the essay that he "eagerly voted" against Trump twice.)
  • "An open-minded spirit no longer exists within NPR, and now, predictably, we don't have an audience that reflects America," he wrote.
  • "For NPR, which purports to consider all things, it's devastating both for its journalism and its business model."

Following the essay's publication , NPR bosses announced monthly internal coverage reviews.

  • NPR's new CEO Katherine Maher, who never previously worked in a newsroom, was forced to make a public statement after conservatives resurfaced old tweets of hers that supported progressive causes. In one she refers to Trump as a "racist sociopath."
  • Axios reached out to NPR for confirmation of Berliner's suspension and additional comment.

State of play: Berliner has been fairly active on social media since the essay was published, retweeting some references to the essay.

  • He appeared last week on News Nation with Chris Cuomo, the former CNN anchor fired in 2021 over allegations he aided his brother , former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), who was accused of sexual misconduct.

The big picture : Such debates are happening more frequently within major national newsrooms as political polarization grows in the U.S. and broader trust in institutions, particularly the news media, withers .

Between the lines: Weiss founded The Free Press after she left The New York Times as an op-ed columnist in July 2020.

  • Amid her departure, she argued she had become a victim of "a 'new McCarthyism' that has taken root at the paper of record."

NPR suspends Uri Berliner, editor who accused the network of liberal bias

By Aimee Picchi

Edited By Alain Sherter

April 17, 2024 / 8:18 AM EDT / CBS News

National Public Radio has suspended Uri Berliner, a senior editor who earlier this month claimed in an essay that the network had "lost America's trust" by pushing progressive views in its coverage while suppressing dissenting opinions.

Berliner's suspension was reported by NPR media correspondent David Folkenflik, who said that the senior editor was suspended for five days without pay starting on Friday. A formal rebuke from NPR said Berliner had violated its policy of securing prior approval to write for other news outlets, and warned that he would be fired if he breached those guidelines in future, Folkenflik reported.

NPR declined to comment to CBS News. "NPR does not comment on individual personnel matters, including discipline," a spokesperson said.

Berliner's  essay  in the Free Press caused a firestorm of debate, with some conservatives, including former President Donald Trump, calling on the government to "defund" the organization. Some of Berliner's NPR colleagues also took issue with the essay, with "Morning Edition" host Steve Inskeep writing on his Substack that the article was "filled with errors and omissions."

"The errors do make NPR look bad, because it's embarrassing that an NPR journalist would make so many," Inskeep wrote.

In the essay, Berliner wrote that NPR has always had a liberal bent, but that for most of his 25 year tenure it had retained an open-minded, curious culture. "In recent years, however, that has changed," he wrote. "Today, those who listen to NPR or read its coverage online find something different: the distilled worldview of a very small segment of the U.S. population."

Berliner added, "[W]hat's notable is the extent to which people at every level of NPR have comfortably coalesced around the progressive worldview. The "absence of viewpoint diversity" is "is the most damaging development at NPR," he wrote.

After the essay's publication, NPR's top editor, Edith Chapin, said she strongly disagrees with Berliner's conclusions and is proud to stand behind NPR's work.

COVID coverage, DEI initiatives

Berliner criticized coverage of major events at NPR, singling out its reporting on COVID and Hunter Biden as problematic. With the first topic, he wrote that the network didn't cover a theory that COVID-19 had been created in a Chinese lab, a theory he claimed NPR staffers "dismissed as racist or a right-wing conspiracy."

He also took NPR for task for what he said was failing to report developments related to  Hunter Biden's laptop . "With the election only weeks away, NPR turned a blind eye," Berliner wrote.

Berliner also criticized NPR for its internal management, citing what he claims is a growing focus on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, or DEI.

"Race and identity became paramount in nearly every aspect of the workplace," Berliner wrote. "A growing DEI staff offered regular meetings imploring us to 'start talking about race'."

Inskeep said Berliner's essay left out the context that many other news organizations didn't report on Hunter Biden's laptop over questions about its authenticity. He also disputed Berliner's characterization that NPR editors and reporters don't debate story ideas.

"The story is written in a way that is probably satisfying to the people who already believe it, and unpersuasive to anyone else — a mirror image of his critique of NPR," Inskeep wrote.

Uri Berliner, the veteran NPR journalist who publicly accused his employer of liberal bias, has resigned from the network.

Berliner posted a message Wednesday on the social media platform X with his resignation letter to the public broadcaster’s chief executive Katherine Maher.

“I am resigning from NPR, a great American institution where I have worked for 25 years,” Berliner wrote. “I don’t support calls to defund NPR. I respect the integrity of my colleagues and wish for NPR to thrive and do important journalism. But I cannot work in a newsroom where I am disparaged by a new CEO whose divisive views confirm the very problems I cite in my Free Press essay.”

Berliner, a business editor at the network, was suspended last Friday, four days after the appearance of an April 9 opinion piece for the Substack newsletter the Free Press . His essay said NPR is catering to “a distilled worldview of a very small segment of the U.S. population.” The overall thrust of the piece asserted that NPR has “lost America’s trust.”

Berliner was suspended for five days for violating NPR’s policy requiring management to clear any work produced for another media outlet.

Berliner’s essay said he voted against former President Trump in 2016 and 2020 but that he believes progressive advocacy seeped into the network’s coverage of Trump and other topics such as the Israel-Hamas war, the origins of COVID-19 and the contents of Hunter Biden’s abandoned laptop.

Berliner’s polemic was promoted by conservative critics of NPR, which led to the resurfacing of politically charged social media posts from Maher.

Maher, who took over as NPR’s chief executive in January, expressed her disdain for Trump in a number of tweets, including one 2020 post in which she called him a racist.

NPR issued a statement Tuesday calling the resurfaced tweets a coordinated attempt to damage the network.

“This is a bad faith attack that follows an established playbook, as online actors with explicit agendas work to discredit independent news organizations,” the network said. “In this case, they resorted to digging up old tweets and making conjectures based on our new CEO’s resume. Spending time on these accusations is intended to detract from NPR’s mission of informing the American public and providing local information in communities around the country is more important than ever.”

Maher previously headed the nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation, which operates Wikipedia, and has no previous experience in journalism.

She did not respond to Berliner by name, but defended NPR’s performance in a letter to staff made public last week.

“Questioning whether our people are serving our mission with integrity, based on little more than the recognition of their identity, is profoundly disrespectful, hurtful, and demeaning,” Maher wrote.

NPR had no comment on Berliner’s resignation.

NPR in Turmoil After It Is Accused of Liberal Bias

An essay from an editor at the broadcaster has generated a firestorm of criticism about the network on social media, especially among conservatives.

Uri Berliner, wearing a dark zipped sweater over a white T-shirt, sits in a darkened room, a big plant and a yellow sofa behind him.

NPR is facing both internal tumult and a fusillade of attacks by prominent conservatives this week after a senior editor publicly claimed the broadcaster had allowed liberal bias to affect its coverage, risking its trust with audiences.

Uri Berliner, a senior business editor who has worked at NPR for 25 years, wrote in an essay published Tuesday by The Free Press, a popular Substack publication, that “people at every level of NPR have comfortably coalesced around the progressive worldview.”

Mr. Berliner, a Peabody Award-winning journalist, castigated NPR for what he said was a litany of journalistic missteps around coverage of several major news events, including the origins of Covid-19 and the war in Gaza. He also said the internal culture at NPR had placed race and identity as “paramount in nearly every aspect of the workplace.”

Mr. Berliner’s essay has ignited a firestorm of criticism of NPR on social media, especially among conservatives who have long accused the network of political bias in its reporting. Former President Donald J. Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to argue that NPR’s government funding should be rescinded, an argument he has made in the past.

NPR has forcefully pushed back on Mr. Berliner’s accusations and the criticism.

“We’re proud to stand behind the exceptional work that our desks and shows do to cover a wide range of challenging stories,” Edith Chapin, the organization’s editor in chief, said in an email to staff on Tuesday. “We believe that inclusion — among our staff, with our sourcing, and in our overall coverage — is critical to telling the nuanced stories of this country and our world.” Some other NPR journalists also criticized the essay publicly, including Eric Deggans, its TV critic, who faulted Mr. Berliner for not giving NPR an opportunity to comment on the piece.

In an interview on Thursday, Mr. Berliner expressed no regrets about publishing the essay, saying he loved NPR and hoped to make it better by airing criticisms that have gone unheeded by leaders for years. He called NPR a “national trust” that people rely on for fair reporting and superb storytelling.

“I decided to go out and publish it in hopes that something would change, and that we get a broader conversation going about how the news is covered,” Mr. Berliner said.

He said he had not been disciplined by managers, though he said he had received a note from his supervisor reminding him that NPR requires employees to clear speaking appearances and media requests with standards and media relations. He said he didn’t run his remarks to The New York Times by network spokespeople.

When the hosts of NPR’s biggest shows, including “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered,” convened on Wednesday afternoon for a long-scheduled meet-and-greet with the network’s new chief executive, Katherine Maher , conversation soon turned to Mr. Berliner’s essay, according to two people with knowledge of the meeting. During the lunch, Ms. Chapin told the hosts that she didn’t want Mr. Berliner to become a “martyr,” the people said.

Mr. Berliner’s essay also sent critical Slack messages whizzing through some of the same employee affinity groups focused on racial and sexual identity that he cited in his essay. In one group, several staff members disputed Mr. Berliner’s points about a lack of ideological diversity and said efforts to recruit more people of color would make NPR’s journalism better.

On Wednesday, staff members from “Morning Edition” convened to discuss the fallout from Mr. Berliner’s essay. During the meeting, an NPR producer took issue with Mr. Berliner’s argument for why NPR’s listenership has fallen off, describing a variety of factors that have contributed to the change.

Mr. Berliner’s remarks prompted vehement pushback from several news executives. Tony Cavin, NPR’s managing editor of standards and practices, said in an interview that he rejected all of Mr. Berliner’s claims of unfairness, adding that his remarks would probably make it harder for NPR journalists to do their jobs.

“The next time one of our people calls up a Republican congressman or something and tries to get an answer from them, they may well say, ‘Oh, I read these stories, you guys aren’t fair, so I’m not going to talk to you,’” Mr. Cavin said.

Some journalists have defended Mr. Berliner’s essay. Jeffrey A. Dvorkin, NPR’s former ombudsman, said Mr. Berliner was “not wrong” on social media. Chuck Holmes, a former managing editor at NPR, called Mr. Berliner’s essay “brave” on Facebook.

Mr. Berliner’s criticism was the latest salvo within NPR, which is no stranger to internal division. In October, Mr. Berliner took part in a lengthy debate over whether NPR should defer to language proposed by the Arab and Middle Eastern Journalists Association while covering the conflict in Gaza.

“We don’t need to rely on an advocacy group’s guidance,” Mr. Berliner wrote, according to a copy of the email exchange viewed by The Times. “Our job is to seek out the facts and report them.” The debate didn’t change NPR’s language guidance, which is made by editors who weren’t part of the discussion. And in a statement on Thursday, the Arab and Middle Eastern Journalists Association said it is a professional association for journalists, not a political advocacy group.

Mr. Berliner’s public criticism has highlighted broader concerns within NPR about the public broadcaster’s mission amid continued financial struggles. Last year, NPR cut 10 percent of its staff and canceled four podcasts, including the popular “Invisibilia,” as it tried to make up for a $30 million budget shortfall. Listeners have drifted away from traditional radio to podcasts, and the advertising market has been unsteady.

In his essay, Mr. Berliner laid some of the blame at the feet of NPR’s former chief executive, John Lansing, who said he was retiring at the end of last year after four years in the role. He was replaced by Ms. Maher, who started on March 25.

During a meeting with employees in her first week, Ms. Maher was asked what she thought about decisions to give a platform to political figures like Ronna McDaniel, the former Republican Party chair whose position as a political analyst at NBC News became untenable after an on-air revolt from hosts who criticized her efforts to undermine the 2020 election.

“I think that this conversation has been one that does not have an easy answer,” Ms. Maher responded.
