PV Sindhu’s interesting 2018 on the tour came to an end with a gold medal at the BWF World Tour Finals in Guangzhou. After a string of silver-medal finishes during the year, the 23-year-old overcame stiff challenges from the world’s best to finish unbeaten in the tournament. And now, Sindhu turns her attention to Premier Badminton League, where she will turn up for Hyderabad Hunters.

It is in Hyderabad Sindhu spoke to Scroll before she left for Guangzhou. The interview was not about her game, or her results in the year or her tactics and training. It was an attempt to get to know Sindhu better off-the-court. What’s her off day like? What’s her advice to young shuttlers in the country? What would she have been, if not a badminton player? And more.

What does Sindhu like about Sindhu and hate about Sindhu?

Likes about me is... I am very jovial and friendly with everybody. Hates is... I am very sensitive and I get angry fast, so yeah...

Which Superhero would you like to be?

Wonder woman!

What would you tell 10-year-old Sindhus?

I would say that... you have to keep working hard and hard work is the key to success. There is no excuse for it. And the most important thing is, they need to be dedicated and focussed. They need to have a goal to achieve. And one more thing, it’s the parents support. That’s the most important thing, for me my parents have been very supportive. They were always behind me.

How good was Sindhu at studies?

I was good at studies, yes. After 10th I wasn’t regular, for sure, because I had to travel. When I was not a badminton player, when I had not become like so famous, I was very much interested in becoming a doctor! But I now feel, okay... badminton is much, much better.

How good are you at keeping a diet? Are you a foodie?

Well yeah, I am a foodie. But when it comes to diet and I have to reduce my weight, I follow a strict diet because it is very important for me. And it is FOR me. I have to play, I have to keep myself fit. When it comes to junk, I will have all sorts of junk food.. ice creams, biriyani, pasta, pizza.

What would you be if not a badminton player?

I’ve never thought a second thought. I started playing around the age of 8, 8 and a half. I started for fun and then I just continued. I never had a second thought — “well, maybe if I would have played tennis” or anything else. It was always badminton in my mind.

What’s your favourite TV show and why?

Nothing in particular... just Netflix and chill!

Non-badminton athletes that you admire the most and why?

There are 2-3... [Roger] Federer. [Rafa] Nadal. Usain Bolt. They are definitely superheroes! Whatever they do, whichever sport they are a part of, they are doing a lot for their country and for themselves. It’s their dedication. They set out to achieve something in life and they did it.

I’d say both actually! Not one in particular...

Favourite badminton memory from childhood

Before when I started playing, just for fun, when my sister and her friends used to play, that’s when I used to go and say, please give me a chance. And they’d be like, ‘no, you go, you are a small kid!’ And now when we think about it, it’s always funny (laughs) when me and my sister talk about it now. Those days we used to say... and now look, it’s completely different.

How does it feel to play for Hyderabad, your home franchise?

It feels really very good. For the first time I am playing for Hyderabad, it’s always been Chennai, Lucknow for the last years. We are going to have a lot of home crowd — the Hyderbad Hunters are always very supportive. Really looking forward to it.

P.V. Sindhu’s way to success started as early as when she was just almost 10 years old. She won many competitions nationally and internationally also. She won the 5th Servo all India Ranking championship in doubles and Single title at Ambuja cement All India ranking.

Since her return from the Tokyo Olympics, PV Sindhu has been clocking miles faster than some of her on-court smashes tend to be. It’s been just over two months since the event ended and the badminton player has already been to Hyderabad (where she lives), Lucknow, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Mumbai, Tirupati and Delhi, where she had ice cream with the prime minister. It is part of an enduring celebration to mark an achievement that’s rare in India—an Olympic medal.

Her bronze in the women’s singles, one of India’s seven medals in the Games , can be seen as a triumph or a let-down, considering she has a silver from the 2016 edition and was expected to go one better. Sindhu was one of India’s brightest hopes at the Games, and she carried those expectations on her lithe 5’9” frame without the trappings or tantrums of stardom, finishing her run one match short of what was anticipated. “After the semi-final [she lost to Taipei’s Tai Tzuying] I was upset. My coach [Park Tae-sang] told me that there is a lot of difference between a bronze and the fourth position. It was tough to come out [for the next match]. When you lose, the feeling is different. But being on the podium is not easy,” she says. Sindhu subsequently defeated China’s He Bing Jiao for a third-place finish, looking heavenwards in relief as coach Park screamed with joy. She is now only the second individual, after wrestler Sushil Kumar, to have won two Olympic medals in post-Independence India.

India’s most marketable female athlete and among the world’s highest earning sportswomen, Sindhu ’s understated middle-class values root her strongly to reality and help manage unrealistic expectations from fans and the fraternity. Her parents Vijaya and Ramana played volleyball competitively, but as fate would have it, the younger of their two daughters trotted into an adjoining badminton court at age seven. That triggered a lasting relationship with the sport, inculcating in Sindhu a heady mix of skills, technique, speed, agility and the stamina to succeed. Coach Pullela Gopi Chand moulded the talent into adulthood, guiding her to second place in Rio and her highest ranking of world No2 in 2017.

Since then, Sindhu has worked on her technique, with help over the last year and more from Park. The pandemic, in a way, helped after she secured permission to practise at the Gachibowli stadium, which allowed her the ‘feel’ of a large arena. Unlike ‘normal’ times, international players could not gauge their opponents in the badminton circuit because there have been few tournaments since March 2020. “Due to the pandemic, we didn’t know how the [other] athlete was doing. That was different in Tokyo—everyone had different techniques and we had to be prepared for anything,” says the 26-year-old who has her sights set on Paris 2024.

The cross-country travel Sindhu has done so far is not new to her. Rio changed her life most significantly—personally and professionally, buoying her with fame and burdening her with expectations. The silver medal, which made her the first Indian badminton player to bring one home, elevated her stardom. She returned to be feted with a parade, riding atop an open double-decker bus in Hyderabad. “You see your name on billboards and children hold your posters... It was a different thing altogether. Five years later, getting a medal in Tokyo is another big thing. It’s not easy.”

“It’s not easy at all,” she repeats. “There has been pressure. Tokyo was harder than Rio because the responsibility has been a lot more. Everyone says, ‘We need a medal from Sindhu.’ Rio was my first time, so I was the underdog,” says Sindhu, who later clinched a gold at the BWF World Championships in 2019 that added further lustre to her glowing résumé. Sindhu is aware of the negative impact of fame and expectations on sportspeople, aspects most recently highlighted by tennis player Naomi Osaka and gymnast Simone Biles. It’s not easy to do it day in and out—train, travel, compete, ride the graph of successes and disappointments. “The scrutiny will be there and people will talk and watch out for you. When you are young, you think you want to be in the limelight and want to be number one. When you get there, you have to enjoy it. You don’t have to complain about it. Enjoy how it comes and let go of what is not needed,” she advises.

In the last year and a half, meditating has helped her stay calm. “There will be pressure at times and I think it’s okay...You should not think about what people want. Think about what you want and be focused. If you win, it’s good for you and for people out there,” says Sindhu, who has a measured, careful manner of speaking. What also helps is having a close-knit family. Her 10-month- old pet Labrador, Rio, a tribute to her first Olympic medal, is another useful distraction. She was asked if she would get one more in honour of Tokyo, but her dog-wary mother put her foot down.

This month, Sindhu will be back on the circuit with the Denmark Open and French Open. “Winning and losing is part of life,” she says. “At the end of the day, it depends on the individual. I choose to answer with the racquet.”

Badminton queen PV Sindhu’s biggest moments on the court

Often regarded as a big-game player, the Indian shuttler has lived up to her top billing time and again throughout a glorious career.

The leading light of Indian badminton PV Sindhu has entertained her fans with some high voltage performances throughout her career.

Be it at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the numerous World Badminton Championships - an event that has often seen PV Sindhu bring the best to the court - or the various Tour events, the Indian star already has a host of glorious memories to look back on.

Here’s a look at some of the matches that saw PV Sindhu push herself to the limits, never giving up in her pursuit of excellence. Here are five moments where we saw PV Sindhu's best from her career in badminton:

PV Sindhu’s Olympic moment: Rio 2016 final

Going into Rio 2016, Indian attention was firmly focused on London 2012 bronze medallist Saina Nehwal , sparing Sindhu much of the nation's expectations.

Though the Indian had made the final without dropping a game, with an equally charged up Carolina Marin of Spain standing across the court in the final, PV Sindhu would need something special to have the precious gold medal around her neck.

In what was a closely fought opening game, the Indian would hold on to her nerves to see through some testing rallies and take a 1-0 advantage earlier on.

But the best was yet to come as the Spaniard once again pushed PV Sindhu to the brink in the second.

This time, however, Carolina Marin - backed by some powerful strokes and lighting quick court play -- took the second game in just over 20 minutes.

And with the momentum going for her, the then world champion went on to neutralise the Indian threat by banking on her big-match experience and strong all-round play to take home the biggest prize while India celebrated the Olympic silver medal.

Result: PV Sindhu lost to Carolina Marin 21-19, 12-21, 15-21.

I really fought very hard and gave my heart out. When I came to the final, I told myself just one match to go and you could win a gold medal. Give it your best, and I tried very hard. I feel it was her day.”

Greatness in Glasgow: World Badminton Championships 2017 final

The 7000-odd spectators that filled the Emirates arena in Glasgow to the brim to watch the final day’s action at the 2017 World Badminton Championships witnessed a truly epic encounter.

In a match that lasted for 110 minutes, both shuttlers struggled to stand after the final point. It was a match befitting for the Worlds final and the badminton world ensured that they stood up and saluted two brave warriors - PV Sindhu and Nozomi Okuhara - for delivering one of the greatest matches in the history of the game.

While PV Sindhu had her powerful jump smashes and lighting-quick returns that helped her garner the much-needed points, Okuhara was technically superior, often catching her opponent off-guard with her smart racquet work.

One of the stand-out aspects of the tie was the rally that helped Sindhu win the second game and push the match into a decider. A rally that lasted for a staggering 73 shots.

In what was nothing less than a energy sapping slugfest where the shuttlers opted to play the waiting game, returning every shot that was thrown at them. Every angle was explored, every fibre of muscle in the body was stretched to create an opening and everything that they had learnt throughout their career was tested.

The rally was so exhausting that even after Okuhara played one on to the net to hand the Indian the game and fall flat on the floor, PV Sindhu barely had the energy to celebrate the point.

However, the Japanese would regain her composure soon and rely on her nimble footwork and anticipation that was best to none on the day to reign supreme after a draining three-game tie.

Result: PV Sindhu lost to Nozomi Okuhara 19-21, 22-20, 20-22

It was mentally and physically tiring. At the end of the day, we both fought really hard because each point was important for both of us. Until the last point, we never thought it was over.”

PV Sindhu’s turning point: China Masters Super Series 2012 quarter-final

In 2012, the Indian badminton world revolved around Saina Nehwal.

The Hyderabadi had become the first Indian shuttler to win an Olympic medal and had also earned the moniker of ‘Dragonslayer’ for her consistent performance against quality Chinese opponents.

It was then when a 17-year-old PV Sindhu chose to announce herself on the international stage.

Up against the newly crowned Olympic champion, Li Xuerui of China, in the quarter-finals of the China Open Super Series, the Indian produced a top-quality win to lay down the marker for what was to follow.

While PV Sindhu had great match awareness in the opening game to negate the Li Xuerui and take a 1-0 lead against the Olympic champion, the Chinese ace came by strong to draw parity with a 21-9 humbling in the second.

Though many thought the young Indian would wilt under pressure and concede the match, PV Sindhu showed her character to go toe-to-toe with the Chinese shuttler and test her abilities with some quality stroke selection and fine net play before emerging victorious.

A confident three-game win against China's most consistent player that year, PV Sindhu showed early glimpses of the talent she possessed.

PV Sindhu considers this match to be the turning point in her career.

Result: PV Sindhu beat Li Xuerui 21-19, 9-21, 21-16

Well, honestly I did not expect that I would beat her, that too in her own country. Of course, she is an Olympic gold medallist and has been playing at the highest level of the sport for a long time now. I wasn’t scared. I just knew that I had to give my best and I played my natural game and won against her.”

PV Sindhu, the big game player: BWF World Tour Finals 2018

PV Sindhu is regarded as a big-game player. And her performances at events like the World Championships, World Tour Finals and the Olympics have often been a testament to her undying resolve.

But even for the Indian ace, there have been low points. And one such run was in 2018 where she went 13 months without a title - reaching seven finals during this period.

Close losses to quality opponents at crucial junctures in the competitions saw critics question her ability to win pivotal points at crucial moments.

But the Indian badminton player would dispel all the doubters with a determined show at the season-ending BWF World Tour final in China.

PV Sindhu won the title. And nothing summed up better than her win over the then world number one Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei, against whom the Indian had lost six of her previous matches in a row, in the group stage of the competition.

In the past, while PV Sindhu would go into her shell and adopt a defensive mindset if she saw her opponent rally into the tie, at the China event, the Indian shuttler was calculative in her efforts and relied on her strengths to see her through and draw level.

Having fought her way back into the tie after dropping the opening game, the third too looked certain to go the distance when PV Sindhu upped the ante to take seven straight points to wrap up the match.

Result: PV Sindhu beat Tai Tzu Ying 14-21, 21-16, 21-18

Couple of times when I was leading and they came back, I would be nervous before. But now I am comparatively much stronger at it. Just focus on the next point. (Earlier) I tend to keep thinking and lose 2-3 points.”

Champion’s delight: BWF World Championships 2019 final

The World Badminton Championships has seen the best that PV Sindhu has to offer.

With a gold, two silvers and two bronze medals, Pusarla Venkata Sindhu is the most successful Indian to compete at the World Championships.

And though she won her first medal - a bronze - at the 2013 edition in Copenhagen, Denmark, PV Sindhu had to wait six years more years for the gold medal in 2019.

This time too, standing in her way was the Japanese Okuhara, who two years ago duelled it out for one hour and 50 minutes before taking the title from her grasp.

But at the 2019 edition , there was no such drama as PV Sindhu brought her best to the table even after she lost the opening point after a 22-shot rally.

She went on to pocket the title in 37 minutes in what was one of the most lopsided finals in Worlds history.

Result: PV Sindhu beat Nozomi Okuhara 21-7, 21-7

I am really happy, I have waited for this victory, and finally I've become world champion. I've no words to express because I was waiting, last year it was silver, before that it was silver and then finally I'm world champion.”

Another first: Commonwealth Games 2022 final

Having had to settle for the brone in 2014 and the silver in 2018, PV Sindhu finally clinched her maiden women's singles gold medal at the Commonwealth Games at Birmingham 2022.

PV Sindhu looked unstoppable throughout the event and dropped only one game in her five matches at the National Exhibition Centre at Solihull - to Malaysia's Goh Jin Wei in the quarter-finals. The Indian badminton ace suffered a stress fracture to her left ankle in the semis against Singapore's Yeo Jia Min but powered through the pain to beat Min before ousting Canada's Michelle Li 21-15, 21-13 in the final, despite playing with a strapped ankle.

Interestingly, Michelle Li was responsible for denying PV Sindhu a spot in the 2014 Glasgow CWG finals, beating the Indian in a tightly-fought semi-final.

Result: PV Sindhu beat Michelle Li 21-15, 21-13

पीवी सिन्धु का जन्म 5 जुलाई, 1995 को हैदराबाद में हुआ। ये एक भारतीय जाट परिवार से हैं। इनके पिता का नाम पीवी रमण और माता का नाम पीवी विजया है। ये दोनों पेशेवर बॉलीबॉल खिलाड़ी है। इसके लिए पीवी रमण को अर्जुन पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया है। पीवी सिन्धु ने बॉलीबॉल की अपेक्षा बैडमिण्टन को चुना, क्योंकि वे ‘ऑल इंग्लैण्ड ओपन बैडमिण्टन चैम्पियनशिप, 2001 में पुलेला गोपीचन्द की सफलता से प्रेरित थीं।

9वीं कक्षा तक उन्होंने अपने शहर के उच्च विद्यालय आगजिलियम उच्च विद्यालय में शिक्षा ग्रहण की तथा अपने व्यस्ततम कार्यक्रम के कारण पत्राचार के माध्यम से आगे की शिक्षा समाप्त की। उन्होंने मेहदीपट्टनम, हैदराबाद में सेण्ट एन्नस कॉलेज फॉर वुमेन से बाणिज्य में स्नातक की उपाधि प्राप्त की।

पीवी सिन्धु ने 8 वर्ष की उम्र से ही बैडमिण्टन खेलना प्रारम्भ कर दिया था। उनके पिता उन्हें सिकन्दराबाद में इण्डियन रेलवे इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ सिग्नल इंजीनियरिंग एण्ड टेलीकम्युनिकेशन के बैडमिण्टन कोर्ट पर ले जाने लगे, जहाँ उन्होंने प्रसिद्ध बैडमिण्टन कोच महबूब अली से खेल के मौलिक तरीकों को सीखा। अन्ततः उन्होंने पुलेला गोपीचन्द की ‘गोपीचन्द बैडमिण्टन एकेडमी’ में दाखिला लिया।

सिन्धु ने कई खिताब जीते हैं, जो निम्न हैं

• पीबी सिन्धु ने अपने जीवन में कई उपलब्धियों को हासिल किया। सिन्धु ने कोलम्बो में आयोजित (वर्ष 2009) उप-जूनियर एशियाई बैडमिण्टन चैम्पियनशिप में काँस्य पदक जीता। वर्ष 2010 में ईरान फब नेशनल बैडमिण्टन चैलेंज मैं एकल वर्ग में रजत पदक जीता।

• अण्डर-10 वर्षीय श्रेणी में, उन्होंने युगल वर्ग में 5 सर्पों ऑल इण्डिया रैंकिंग चैम्पियनशिप जीता और अम्बुजा सीमेण्ट ऑल इण्डिया रैंकिंग में एकल खिताब जीता। ● अण्डर 13 वर्षीय श्रेणी में, सिन्धु ने पाण्डिचेरी में उप-जूनियरों में एकल खिताब जीता, कृष्ण खेतान ऑल इण्डिया ट्रेनमिष्ट में डबल्स खिताब जीता। • अण्डर-14 श्रेणी में उन्होंने भारत में 51 में राष्ट्रीय स्कूल खेलों में स्वर्ण पदक जीता।

7 जुलाई, 2012 को उन्होंने फाइनल में एशियाई युवा अण्डर-19 चैम्पियनशिप में जापानी खिलाड़ी नोजोमी ओकुहारा को हराया। श्रीनगर में आयोजित 77वीं सीनियर राष्ट्रीय बैडमिण्टन चैम्पियनशिप में वे शामिल हुई और फाइनल में पहुँच गईं। उन्हें सयाली गोखले ने फाइनल में हराया। दिसम्बर, 2012 में सिन्धु लखनऊ में सैयद मोदी इण्डिया ग्राण्ड प्रिक्स गोल्डन प्रतियोगिता में उपविजेता बनीं। उन्हें इण्डोनेशियाई लिण्डा वेणीफैनेत्री ने हराया फिर भी वे अपने करियर में 15वीं सर्वश्रेष्ठ रैंकिंग पर पहुंच गई।

पीवी सिन्धु ने वर्ष 2013 में सिंगापुर में गुजुआन को हराकर मलेशियन ओपन खिताब जीता। यह सिन्धु का पहला ● ग्राण्ड प्रिक्स गोल्डन खिताब था। पीबी सिन्धु ने 8 अगस्त, 2013 को बीडब्ल्यूएफ विश्व चैम्पियनशिप में चीन की बांग शिसियान को हराकर महिला एकल में भारत को पहला पदक दिलाया। वर्ष 2013 में वे भारतीय बैडमिण्टन लीग में अवध बॉरियर्स टीम की कप्तान बनीं। उनकी टीम ने सेमीफाइनल में मुम्बई के मराठों को हरा दिया, लेकिन फाइनल में उनकी टीम हैदराबाद हॉट-शॉट से हार गई 1 दिसम्बर, 2013 को उन्होंने कनाडा की मिशेल ली को हराकर मकाऊ ओपन ग्राण्ड प्रिक्स गोल्ड खिताब जीता।

सिन्धु लगातार एक के बाद एक पदक जीतने वाली पहली भारतीय महिला खिलाड़ी है। अक्टूबर, 2015 में वे डेनमार्क ओपन में सुपर सीरीज प्रतियोगिता के अपने पहले फाइनल में पहुँची। फाइनल में वे चैम्पियन ली जुएरुई से सीधे गोम में हार गईं। नवम्बर, 2015 में पीवी सिन्धु ने जापान की मिनात्सू मितानी को फाइनल में हराकर मकाऊ ओपन ग्राण्ड प्रिक्स गोल्ड में लगातार तीसरी बार महिला एकल का खिताब जीता। जनवरी, 2016 में सिन्धु ने फाइनल में स्कॉटलैण्ड की क्रिस्टी गिल्मर को हराकर मलेशिया मास्टर्स ग्राण्ड प्रिक्स महिला एकल खिताब जीता। उन्होंने वर्ष 2013 में भी इस टूर्नामेण्ट को जीता था।

पीवी सिन्धु ने रियो डि जेनेरियो में आयोजित किए गए ओलम्पिक, 2016 में भारत का प्रतिनिधित्व किया तथा अपना सर्वश्रेष्ठ प्रदर्शन किया। इन्होंने महिलाओं की एकल स्पर्द्धा के फाइनल में प्रवेश किया। इस तरह पीवी सिन्धु ओलम्पिक में महिला एकल स्पर्द्धा के फाइनल में पहुँचने वाली पहली भारतीय महिला खिलाड़ी बनीं। सिन्धु ने सेमीफाइनल में जापान की नोजोमी ओकुहारा को सीधे सेटों में 21-19 और 21-10 से हराया। फाइनल में उनका सामना शीर्ष वरीयता प्राप्त स्पेन की कैरोलिन भारिन से हुआ। पहला गेम सिन्धु ने 21-19 से जीता, लेकिन दूसरे और तीसरे गेम में वे हार गईं, पर इस तरह ये सबसे कम उम्र में रजत पदक जीतने वाली पहली महिला खिलाड़ी बनीं।

28 मार्च से 2 अप्रैल, 2017 के मध्य दिल्ली में आयोजित ‘इण्डिया ओपन बैडमिण्टन चैम्पियनशिप 2017’ के फाइनल में पीवी सिन्धु ने कैरोलिना मारिन (स्पेन) को हराकर स्पर्द्धा अपने नाम कर ली। स्कॉटलैण्ड के ग्लास्गो में 21 से 27 अगस्त तक आयोजित विश्व बैडमिण्टन चैम्पियनशिप के फाइनल मुकाबले में पीवी सिन्धु ने जापान के नोजोमी ओकुहारा से हारकर रजत पदक प्राप्त किया। इसके पश्चात् 17 सितम्बर, 2017 को शियोल (दक्षिण कोरिया) में आयोजित कोरिया ओपन सुपर सीरीज बैडमिण्टन, टूर्नामेण्ट 2017 के फाइनल मुकाबले में पीवी सिन्धु ने नोजोमी ओकुहारा (जापान) को हराकर खिताब अपने नाम किया।

इस जीत को जारी रखते हुए पीवी सिन्धु ने दिसम्बर में आयोजित दुबई बैडमिण्टन सुपर सीरीज 2017 में विश्व के दूसरे स्थान पर स्थित जापान की अकाने यामागुची को हराकर अपनी लगातार तीसरी जीत दर्ज की। वर्ष 2019 में स्विट्ज़रलैण्ड के बासेल में सम्पन्न विश्व बैडमिण्टन चैम्पियनशिप में महिला एकल के फाइनल में जापान की नाजोमी ओकुहारा को हराकर स्वर्ण पदक जीता। इस तरह से सिन्धु अपने जीवन में नई-नई उपलब्धियों को हासिल करने की दिशा में प्रयत्नशील हैं, जो युवा खिलाड़ियों के लिए प्रेरणादायक हैं। अगस्त, 2017 में इन्होंने आन्ध्र प्रदेश के कृष्णा जिले में राजस्य विभाग में डिप्टी कलेक्टर का पद संभाला। सिन्धु को कई पुरस्कार व सम्मान भी प्राप्त हुए हैं।

भारत सरकार ने पीवी सिन्धु की एक बैडमिण्टन महिला खिलाड़ी के रूप में उल्लेखनीय उपलब्धियों के कारण उन्हें अनेक सम्मान प्रदान किए। वर्ष 2013 में सिन्धु को ‘अर्जुन पुरस्कार’, वर्ष 2014 में एफआईसीसीआई का महत्त्वपूर्ण ‘खिलाड़ी सम्मान’ तथा ‘एनडीटीवी इण्डिया ऑफ द ईयर 2014 मिले। वर्ष 2015 में सिन्धु को भारत का चौथा सर्वोच् सम्मान ‘पद्म श्री’ भी प्राप्त हुआ।

भारतीय बैडमिण्टन समिति की ओर से वर्ष 2016 में मकाउ ओपन बैडमिण्टन चैम्पियनशिप जीतने पर सिन्धु को ₹10 लाख का पुरस्कार दिया गया। इसके अतिरिक्त वर्ष 2016 में मलेशिया मास्टर्स जीतने पर भी बैडमिण्टन समिति ने उन्हें १६ लाख का पुरस्कार दिया तथा वर्ष 2016 में ही भारत के सबसे बड़े खेल सम्मान राजीव गाँधी खेल रत्न प्रदान करके सम्मानित किया गया। नवम्बर, 2017 में इण्डियन स्पोर्ट्स ऑनर कार्यक्रम में सिंगल्स खेल में साल की सर्वश्रेष्ठ महिला खिलाड़ी के रूप में पीवी सिन्धु (बैडमिण्टन) को ‘इण्डियन स्पोर्ट्स ऑनर’ पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया है।

खेल के आदर्श पेले ने एक बार कहा था, “सफलता दुर्घटना नहीं है, यह कठिन मेहनत, नजरिया, सीखने, पढ़ने, त्याग और इन सबके साथ हम क्या करना चाहते हैं और करने के लिए कैसे सीख रहे हैं, इसके प्रति प्यार है।” यह कथन पीवी सिन्धु के सन्दर्भ में पूर्णतया सत्य है, क्योंकि उन्होंने अपने करियर के इतने कम समय में ही अपनी मेहनत, प्रतिबद्धता और लगाव से सफलता की नई ऊँचाई हासिल की है।
