Radhe review – Salman Khan blockbuster is a cheap dash through the fight tropes

Why use the door, Salman? Bollywood megastar goes back to basics, pummelling everything in sight including narrative cohesion

W hat was originally scheduled as India’s big Eid blockbuster for May 2020 is opening a year later in cinemas everywhere but India itself, where it came out on streaming platforms last weekend. In his guise as producer-megastar, musclebound Salman Khan has dispatched his minions to hollow out the taut narrative chicanery of 2017’s Korean thriller The Outlaws and reconfigure its carcass into the kind of flattering vehicle only a powerful Bollywood leading man can command. Despite some early welcome flickers of the kind of self-awareness that’s crept into Khan’s projects over the past half-decade, the result is very much back-to-basics. The more knowing nonsense only serves to make the eventual slump into third-rate pummelling more dispiriting.

Most of that nonsense, which prompts fitful back-row giggles, concerns Khan’s indomitable hero cop Radhe. “He has his own methods of working,” insists one of the Mumbai police chiefs recruiting him to protect the city’s youth from straggle-haired druglord Randeep Hooda. These include: never entering via the door when he can leap face-first through a glass window, manifesting in multiple locations simultaneously so as to better box his quarries’ ears, and – less amusingly – casually torturing suspects. A chance encounter with poster-girl Diya (Disha Patani) encourages our man to try male modelling; this love interest, naturally, turns out to be the sister of Radhe’s ever more exasperated CO (Jackie Shroff). Don’t ask about the 35-year age gap between these siblings; no one behind the camera clearly bothered.

While a jocular, self-mocking Khan is still preferable to the puppy-eyed sentimentalist who made 2017’s Tubelight and 2019’s Bharat such ordeals, there’s an awful lot of self to mock here, and not nearly enough craft to counterbalance that ego. Hired to glam up an expensive-looking nightclub number, guest star Jacqueline Fernandez gets elbowed out of sight once Radhe storms the stage to prat around. Quality control gets shoved off soon after. One bathroom punch-up is shot on such cheap, smeary digital it resembles rehearsal footage. Even the fun stuff is low-grade and limited, because our guy’s heroism is forever meant to be taken as sacrosanct. Director Prabhu Deva’s cursory dash through the not-so-grand finale suggests he clearly wanted it over; you may do, too.

Radhe movie review: A complete Salman show

There's no doubt that Radhe - Your Most Wanted Bhai was made especially for the big screen. From superstar Salman Khan's 'Seeti Maar' entry to the climax fight sequence, the movie is aimed to drive the Salman Khan fans go into frenzy and celebrate the actor.

While reports had it that Radhe - Your Most Wanted Bhai is a remake of the Korean action film The Outlaws , the Salman Khan-starrer exudes the aura of the superstar leaving nothing in store other than glorifying Bhai.

The film begins with Rana (Randeep Hooda), the evil boss in the drug mafia. Rana has shifted his base from Delhi and reached Mumbai to set up his empire there. From spreading terror to selling drugs to students and teenagers, Rana grabs the attention of cops.

Realizing that a powerful officer is needed in the case, the police force assigns Radhe and the rest might be easy for one to guess. Radhe is a fearless rebel cop whose resume boasts 97 encounters and 23 punishment transfers.

In the meantime, Radhe meets Diya (Disha Patani) and falls in love with her at the very first sight. Like every other Bollywood masalas, Radhe tries to impress Diya, who is a model and is also the sister of ACP Avinash. What follows is a series of logic less fun sequences.

By half way, Radhe realizes that Rana isn't like usual criminal and that he needs a perfect plan to catch him. And that's where lies the crux of an action-filled flick within hyper masculine men.

If it was Bhai versus Sonu Sood in Dabangg , in Radhe it's Bhai versus Hooda. Apart from the fact that Hooda appears in a black leather jacket with long hair, the scenario almost seems to be the same like those of Salman Khan's earlier flicks including Wanted .

Well, one has to take note of the fact that Radhe marks the third collaboration between Salman Khan and director Prabhudeva and the two worked together in Dabangg 3 and Wanted . Prabhudeva creates the similar style and swag to the narrative.

It was sad to see Jackie Shroff's character written in a comical manner and his dialogues didn't really fit into the action flick. Disha Pathani was just yet another female character to bring some relief from the actions and for romance.

As a through out Salman Khan show, Radhe might be enjoyed by Bhai fans especially during the lockdown and festive time. However, it might not come as Bhai's most wanted film.

Radhe Review: Salman Khan Does Everything Fans Expect Including Shedding His Shirt

A Salman Khan movie is usually like a running tap that cannot be turned off. It stops only when the water tank has been emptied of its content. Radhe , directed by Prabhudeva, is another unapologetic addition to that tradition. The film dumps a whole lot of dross on us, albeit with a certain degree of surface gloss.

The lead actor, doing justice to the tagline in the title (“Your Most Wanted Bhai”), has the entire film to himself. When Radhe loses his cool, which obviously is pretty frequently, there is no stopping him. The one-man army goes all guns blazing. It is, however, Randeep Hooda, in the guise of a brutal baddie in black, who upstages the rest of the cast, which includes Jackie Shroff in an underwritten comic role of a bumbling Assistant Commissioner of Police who seeks to hide his failings behind a wall of bluster.

Available for on-demand viewing on Zee5 – it would also have hit the multiplexes had the second wave of Covid-19 not shuttered movie halls across India – Radhe deals with an urban epidemic of sorts. Youngsters are dropping dead (or harming themselves grievously) owing to widespread drug addiction. Our man Radhe , an under-suspension police inspector, is hurriedly pulled out of hibernation and entrusted with the task of weeding out the drug dealers who are taking a toll on the nation's future.

Towards the end of the film, the protagonist, who has been given the assignment owing to his reputation (he has toted up 97 encounter killings and 23 transfers in ten years, the audience is told), proclaims: I will clean the city up. Swachch Bharat! Jai Hind! You expect him to round it off with Bharat Mata Ki Jai. He stops short. Mercifully.

The source of the basic story is duly acknowledged. Radhe is a remake of the high-grossing 2017 Korean action film The Outlaws, which had drawn inspiration from real-life, turn-of-the-millennium gang rivalries in a Chinese-dominated neighbourhood of Seoul. The Salman Khan starrer is only fitfully focused on the ground realities of Mumbai. It is far more at ease with the larger-than-life treatment that the star imposes upon the film.

Salman Khan goes about the mop-up job with all the swag at his command. In his grand entry scene, he flies through a sturdy glass pane without causing himself any pain. While he is in one piece and lands on his feet ready to take on the world, he sends shards and bodies flying. The goons who cross his path stand absolutely no chance – Radhe can stand up to entire battalions single-handedly, and without losing much sweat, let alone blood, over it.

Needless to say, we have seen this persona of the star on the big screen times without number. But just in case you don't get it, he spouts his signature Dabangg refrain: “Main jab commitment kar deta hoon….” Among the other punchlines that dialogue writer Vijay Maurya (also the film's screenwriter along with A.C. Mugil) gives the lead actor is: “Radhe jaane ke liye nahin bhejne ke liye aaya hai.” This is in response to an unsuspecting question posed by the first bad guy that he eliminates: How will you get out alive? It is Inspector Radhe's job to send criminals packing post-haste. As for the man himself, he comes and comes at his own sweet will.

Radhe is Salman Khan's customary Eid release. So, before he proceeds to hasten his first adversary's tryst with death, he declares: “Tere hisse ki biryani mil-baatke khayenge aur bolenge Eid Mubarak.” What that also means is that the star wants you to treat the film as a diversion in tough times and not fret over the illogical methods that it wallows in. Much later, Radhe brings us back fleetingly to the real world. The crawl on a television news channel reporting on a shootout in a Mumbai pub refers to the launch of the Coronavirus vaccination drive in India on January 16, 2021. But let us not even go there considering where we are a few months on.

Life isn't all work and no play for Radhe . He does get the occasional breather, thanks to the largely decorative presence of Disha Patani. The character that the hero's romantic interest plays is defined by the skimpiness of the outfits she sports rather than by the depth of her relevance to the plot. She is in the film to try and ensure that it is sufficiently peppered with songs and dances and that the musical set- pieces are endowed with reasonable glamour quotient while Salman Khan provides the star power to keep the unabashedly silly plot moving.

Not that she succeeds. In one scene, after she has sent her sloshed dad – the aforementioned ACP Avinash Abhyankar, Radhe' s boss, to bed, she breaks into a seductive dance to inveigle the object of her affection. Radhe , however, responds with spirit-dampening snores. That, to be charitable to her and to whoever decided to cast her opposite Salman (there is little compatibility, forget chemistry, between the two), is the effect Patani's presence has on the film. She slows it down.

The songs, picturised in a manner that harks back to Prabhudeva's early days as a choreographer, might pass muster if one were to watch them independently of the film, but in a thriller centred on vicious drug peddlers on the rampage and a cop bent upon bringing them to book, they are totally out of place.

Talking of placement of songs, the much-hyped Seeti Maar number does not add up at all. It is bunged into the 110-minute film at the top of its last quarter. It simply doesn't work. In anything, it pours a whole gallon of water on the possibility of any sort of dramatic anticipation building up as Radhe prepares to launch his final assault on Rana, the ruthless crime lord who goes about bludgeoning and slashing people who owe him money.

Radhe has enough inducements for diehard Salman Khan fans to keep them interested in the goings-on. The star does everything that they would expect of him, including shedding his shirt. For all others, there is Randeep Hooda.

Salman Khan starrer Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai has released all over the world. Radhe is out in the theatres wherever they are open and for those who want to watch the film from the comfort of their homes, it is available on ZEE5’s pay-per-view service ZEEPlex.

The movie also stars Disha Patani, Jackie Shroff and Randeep Hooda. Directed by Prabhudheva, Radhe is a quintessential Salman Khan action-entertainer. Salman was last seen in the 2019 film Dabangg 3 and had no releases in 2020. Radhe was initially scheduled to release during Eid 2020 but was postponed due to the pandemic.

In a virtual interaction with media, Salman Khan shared that the film has three villains. “We have three villains Sang Hae from Bhutan, Gautam Gulati, who was in Bigg Boss, and then there is Randeep Hooda. They are fantastic in the film and they look something else only. They have actually made Radhe look much stronger and bigger. The opposition is so lethal. You can tell how hard these guys have worked,” he said.

The Dabangg star added, “Radhe is a new film so we will not repeat what we have already done in earlier films. Otherwise, it will be that you have repeated yourself again. So, it is new and I need you to see the film and then you tell me what is new apart from me. I am the same old Salman that you have been seeing since Maine Pyaar Kiya.”

Radhe marks the third collaboration between Salman Khan and director Prabhudheva. The two previously worked together in Dabangg 3 and the 2009 film Wanted that started the new era of Salman.

Salman Khan's Bajrangi Bhaijaan co-actor Harshaali Malhotra, who played Munni in the film, shared a video where she is seen dancing to Radhe's song 'Seeti Maar'.

Gulfnews.com gave Radhe 2 out of 5 stars and wrote that 'this film should ideally re-christened Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bore’. About Radhe's supporting actors' role, the website wrote, "Seasoned actors such as Jackie Shroff is wasted in poorly-written roles. His attempt at humour lands in a few places, but falls flat for most parts of the film. And, since women have almost zero agency in a Khan’s films, they tick the box of looking pretty and vivacious. For instance, Disha Patani as an aspiring model with zero self-preservation skills looks fetching, but not much is asked of her.'

Satadeep Saha, CEO of SSR Cinemas Pvt Ltd and Owner of Ajanta Cinema, Rupasi Cinema, Rupasi Binodan shared via Twitter, "I kept my commitment of screening Radhe in my theatres of Tripura ..as i wrote a letter requesting you to release it in cinemas." Radhe is likely to release in only three theatres in India as the country is largely under lockdown due to the pandemic.

Salman Khan on Wednesday urged his fans to not support piracy. The actor, whose film Radhe Your Most Wanted Bhai is all set to release on Thursday, dropped a video message for his fans. In the video, the actor said that filmmaking involves the efforts of a lot of people, and it hurts when people watch pirated versions of a film. Salman Khan and Disha Patani starrer Radhe has hit the screens in theatres across the world. These are the scenes from a Dubai theatre where the Salman Khan film was welcomed to dhol beats.

On the eve of Radhe's release, Disha Patani shared a photo with director Prabhudeva and wrote, "Radhe out tomorrow. An absolute delight to work with the legendry @prabhudevaofficial."

Randeep Hooda said in a statement, "I have played several grey characters in my career. Hence, it was an exciting experience to go completely black inside and out on this one. Getting into the nature of Rana had more to do with the look and swag than other aspects. This is my third collaboration with Salman, and it was fun and exciting as always." 

"I feel that films like Radhe can work as a stressbuster in such a scenario. We had hoped that it would release in theatres here as well because it was envisioned as a film meant for the big screen. Unfortunately, the situation is such that it will largely be a digital release,” Prabhudheva told Times of India.

I feel it is a blessing to have a release and I am more than happy and grateful that the film is finally releasing in the best possible way," Disha Patani told PTI.

In an interview with PTI, Disha Patani said, "I was initially intimidated by Salman sir. He is the biggest star of the country. With time we got comfortable and it has been a great experience working with him. He is so humble and helpful."

"Making a film takes a lot of time from six months to a year, maybe, so you better like what you are doing. In the case of Radhe, I liked the script. It is a fun, massy film. I like watching such movies. I haven't done a massy film before. I was very excited to be working on this film. Besides, to have a great director and a major star is like an added bonus," Disha Patani told PTI.

Salman Khan said Prabhudheva film Wanted didn't change anything for him, but Maine Pyar Kiya did. “Wanted didn’t change anything. The film that changed everything for me was Maine Pyar Kiya. Wanted was a hit action film. Before that also there were such films. What has changed is the population of the country. Even in my movies, I make sure there is everything for everyone,” he said.

Randeep Hooda expressed his opinion on Radhe Your Most Wanted Bhai releasing in hybrid model.

“It will be a good experiment for the industry to have this hybrid kind of platform release where people who are unable to get to theatres can watch it. It is also a cheaper option since instead of buying one ticket per person, the entire family can watch it. What better film to test the whole system with than a Salman Khan film. I’m hoping it will do well,” he said.

"Radhe is different," says Salman Khan. The actor said it is not like any of his earlier films.

“Radhe is a new film so we will not repeat what we have already done in earlier films. Otherwise, it will be that you have repeated yourself again. So, it is new. I need you to see the film and then you tell me what is new apart from me. I am the same old Salman that you have been seeing since Maine Pyaar Kiya," the actor said.

After losing an arm in an accident, a character wins a position in archery at the Paralympics. However, this character is reduced to their disability, which is only present for the main lead to make a philosophical discovery.

Parents need to know that Radhe Shyam is a 2022 Indian romantic drama -- with intense scenes involving suicide and bloody/gory accidents -- that explores destiny versus free will. Set in 1970s Europe, the story follows the fate-altering relationship between Vikramaditya (Prabhas), a world-famous palmist, and Prerana (Pooja Hegde), a doctor with a fatal medical condition. There are multiple kissing scenes, and one implied sex scene -- no nudity is shown -- as well as references to casual sexual encounters. Expect stunts, chase sequences, and significant gore. At one point, the lead characters dangerously dangle out of a moving train, while there are several accidents (including a train toppling over, a ship sinking, and a character being run over by a bus) that cause injury or death. A prominent character attempts suicide by letting go of the steering wheel while driving and is seriously injured. There are medical procedures (defibrillation, surgery) and heavy discussions about death. One scene involves characters drinking, but not to excess. What's the Story?

In the 1970s-set RADHE SHYAM, Vikramaditya (Prabhas) is a renowned palmist whose predictions never go wrong. Believing he is not destined for love, Vikramaditya only indulges in casual relationships with women. But his foresight falls short when he encounters the happy-go-lucky Prerana (Pooja Hegde). Falling for one another, the duo decide to wage a war against fate.

Is It Any Good?

Starring a famous and celebrated Indian cast -- that includes Hegde and Prabhas -- this romantic drama fails to live up to its promise. Shot extensively in Europe, Radhe Shyam boasts intense action, adventure, and emotion, delivering a fairy tale vibe through pretty scenery and praiseworthy visual effects. Unfortunately the mawkish melodrama and the clichéd star-crossed lovers theme is boring, with neither the characters nor the story having much depth. The humor is also silly and the music a tad too mushy. Which is a shame as the premise of fate versus free will had potential. But the various reckless acts that are done in the name of romance are hardly the best examples for any watching kids.

They movie show there is respectable science called palmisty. <br/> But need to understand that the science does not change for the palmist . The science applies to all in the same way . . The director wasted his money ... you cannot change your destiny . The science is true but. You need to find a write palmist to read the palm

Definitely an awesome movie.Each and every scene is so well designed. The dialogues are very good.Story is really unique and the suspense keeps audience guessing.The background scenes feel magical.I will rewatch it again
