3 Ways to Remove Password to Modify in PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint allows users to set a password to modify to protect a presentation from being edited or modified by unauthorized users. If you still know the password to modify, you can simply remove it via PowerPoint's General Options, as described below. If you have forgotten/lost the password to modify, you have to remove it with either of the other two methods.

Step 1: Open the presentation file. When a dialog asks to enter the password to modify, enter your correct password and click OK.

Step 2: Click File > Save As , then select one location where you will save the presentation file.

Step 3: In the Save As dialog, click Tools > General Options .

Step 4: When the General Options window opens, locate the Password to modify box and remove the password using the Backspace key on your keyboard, and then click OK .

Step 5: When you're back to the Save As dialog, click Save to save the changes. That's it. Next time you won't be required to enter password to modify when opening this presentation file.

Way 2: Remove password to modify in PowerPoint using .zip format

Step 1 Download Passper for PowerPoint and install it on your computer. Open the program and then click on " Recover Passwords " to begin the process.

2.2 General Option (Password Required)

Step 1: Begin by opening the PowerPoint presentation you want to unlock.

Step 2: For PowerPoint 2002/XP: Click on Tools > Options > Edit and then uncheck the checkmark next to " Password Protection " in the " Disable New Features " section.

For PowerPoint 2003: Click on File > Save As and then click on " Tools " in the dialog box. In the popup menu that appears, click on " Security Options " and then select and delete the password or passwords in the dialog box that appears.

For PowerPoint 2007/2010/2013/2016/2019/Microsoft 365: Click on the Office button and then choose " Save As ", click " Tools " in the lower left of the "Save As" dialog box and then click " General Options ". Select and delete the password or passwords before clicking "OK" to save the changes.

2.3. Inbuilt Decryption (Password Required)

Once you've got the right password, you can also remove it via PowerPoint's inbuilt Encryption feature.

Step 1: Click on File option in the upper left corner and click Info -> Protect Presentation -> Encrypt with Password .

Step 2: Remove the password in the password column and then click on OK to save the change.

Part 3. Remove 'Password to Modify' from PowerPoint

The restrictions set on PowerPoint files can limit the number of ways you can edit the document as well the options you have when creating and saving new content. Luckily, there are also 2 options for you to remove 'password to modify' from PowerPoint without password.

3.1 Passper for PowerPoint

Passper for PowerPoint can also help you remove all restrictions from a PowerPoint presentation in 3 seconds . Here's a simple step-by-step guide to show you how to do it:

Step 1 Launch Passper for PowerPoint. On the program's main window, select " Remove Restrictions " option and then click the " + " to open the restricted PowerPoint file.

3.2 File Extension

Apart from using Passper for PowerPoint, you can also unprotect PowerPoint presentation by renaming the file extension of the file and then deleting some of the protected section.

This method is rather time-consuming as well as complicated for users who don't possess certain relevant professional knowledge.

Step 1: Begin by making a copy of the file. Leave the original file as it since it will act as sort of a backup in case something goes wrong. Then rename the copied file, changing the file's extension from PPSX/PPTX to ZIP.

Step 2: Now open the newly created ZIP file and find the .xml file in the folder.

Step 3: Here, you should find a file named "presentation.xml". Extract this file from the ZIP file and then open it in a text editor like Notepad.

and delete it.

Step 5: Now save the file, making sure you put it in the ZIP file so that it replaces the old file.

Step 6: Rename the ZIP file to PPSX/PPTX and then open the presentation.

You should now be able to edit the presentation without any restrictions. If not, something may have gone wrong with the process and you may need to start all over again. Just remember to create a backup of the original file.

Whether you have forgotten the password you assigned to your PowerPoint document or you don't have the right password to a protected document, the above solutions are capable of helping you gain full access to decrypted PowerPoint files. How to Password Protect PowerPoint (Step-by-Step)

Are you ready to learn how to password protect PowerPoint presentations so that others cannot edit or copy and paste your content?

Before you get started though, please remember this. If you forget the password you created in the steps below, you will not be able to recover your password, or unlock your presentation.

Now before password protect your presentation, it’s important to first understand the difference between the two types of Passwords you can use to protect your PowerPoint presentations.

Two Types of PowerPoint Passwords

PowerPoint has two different styles or types of passwords you can add to your presentation which determine what someone can and can’t do with your presentation.

While the difference between the two pop-up windows as you can see in the picture below appears small, the difference is big.

1. Password to Open

Adding a password to open forces you (or whoever opens your presentation) to input a password to be able to not only see but edit the content of your presentation.

If they do not know the correct (case-sensitive) password, they cannot open, review or modify your presentation in any way. Just keep in mind that there is NO WAY to recover a forgotten password.

So if you password protect your presentation AND forget your password, you too will not be able to open or edit your presentation.

2. Password to Modify

Adding a password to Modify gives your clients and colleagues two different ways to access your presentation.

• They can enter the correct password and get full editing rights to your document (just like a normal presentation).
• They can choose to open your file in a Read-Only format, allowing them to view (but not edit) your PowerPoint presentation.

To give someone the Read-Only option pictured below to access your presentation, you must use the password to Modify option.

In the Read-Only version of your presentation, people can still print, save your file as a PDF and run your presentation in the Slideshow modes. To see all the slideshow shortcuts and techniques, check out our ultimate slideshow guide here.

On top of that, all of your PowerPoint animations, effects, hyperlinks, etc. will still work in the Read-Only version of your document. But other than reviewing your document, people will NOT be able to edit, modify or copy and paste any of your content.

How to add a password to PowerPoint

To password protect your PowerPoint presentation using either the Password to Open or Password to Modify options, follow the steps below.

1. Open the PowerPoint presentation you want to password protect

The only way to add a password to a specific presentation is from within the presentation itself. So as a first step, find and open the presentation that you want to password-protect.

As a best practice, I recommend creating a non-password-protected copy of your presentation and saving it on your computer. That way if you forget your password, you can always open the non-password-protected version on your computer.

To create a copy of your presentation, simply Ctrl + C to copy and Ctrl + V to paste it inside a File Explorer window.

2. Open the Save As dialog box

The FASTEST way to access the Save As dialog box from within PowerPoint is using your keyboard shortcuts. You can use either of the two keyboard shortcuts (whichever is easier for you to remember):

• F12 for Save As
• Ctrl + Shift + S for Save As

If you hit F12 and nothing happens, that means that your function keys are reversed. In this case, try adding the Function key to the sequence:  Fn + F12 .

3. Open the Tools dropdown

Inside the Save As dialog box, open the Tools dropdown (it is right next to the Save button as pictured above).

Note : The Save As dialog box is also the trick to converting PowerPoint to PDF .

4. Select General Options

Inside the Tools dropdown, select General Options . This is where you can add/remove passwords to your PowerPoint presentations.

5. Enter your password (Open or Modify)

Inside the General Options dialog box, decide which type of password to add to your presentation (see my explanation of both types at the top of this page).

Your two options are:

• Password to Open
• Password to Modify

To get started, simply click into the input box for the type of password you want to protect PowerPoint with (Open or Modify) and type your password.

Remember too that passwords are case-sensitive, so be careful you don’t have the Caps Lock key on when you enter your password. Thankfully, you get the chance to confirm your password in the next step.

6. Confirm your Password

This is your chance to confirm you have typed the correct password for your presentation. As there is no way to view the password you have typed, I recommend taking care here to make sure you type what you think you typed.

If you make a mistake and the two passwords are not the same, you get the following error notification.

Clicking OK , you can either re-type your password correctly or select Cancel to exit out of the Confirm Password dialog box.

PowerPoint will not allow you to add a password to your presentation unless you can first confirm your password.

7. Rename your Presentation (Recommended)

While renaming your password-protected presentation is optional, to me this is a critical best practice.

I personally like to add “- with Password” or “PW” or “Password to Open” to identify the document as having a password. This also helps you distinguish it from your original (non-password protected) document that you hopefully saved in step #1 above.

In this step, you can also choose where to save your password-protected document on your computer by navigating between your folders.

8. Save and Close your document

Once you have selected a location on your computer to save your password-protected presentation, click Save and then close out of your document to trigger the password.

As long as you have your document open, you will not need to enter the password to open it (as it is already open). Closing the document triggers the password gate to close, requiring a password to open it again.

9. Double-check your password works properly

Before you send off your document as final, double-check that your password properly works. This is especially important if you created a non-password-protected version of your presentation, to make sure you are working with the correct file.

Find your protected presentation on your computer and double-click it to open it up. If the document immediately opens without asking you to enter a password, it means that:

• You selected the non-password-protected version of your document
• You never closed your PowerPoint presentation after adding your password (see step #8 above)
• You made a mistake somewhere along the way and should start over

Either way, double-checking this now will save you from accidentally sending your client the wrong file.

Once your password is properly added to your presentation, opening the document forces you to enter a password to continue. Once you see the dialog box, try entering your password to make sure you have the right one.

How to remove a password from PowerPoint

Tired of always having to enter in a password to edit your presentation? Well, let’s look at how to remove a password from your presentation.

For example, you added a password to your presentation to work with a specific client, and now that project is over. So you want to remove the password so you and your team can access it without always having to enter a password.

Removing a password is very similar to adding a password. Simply follow these steps.

1. Find and open the password-protected presentation

The only way to remove a password from PowerPoint is from within the password-protected presentation.

Navigate to the file on your computer, and double-click it to open it. If a dialog box does not pop open asking you for a password to continue, it means one of two things:

• You have selected the wrong presentation
• Your presentation is not password-protected

Notice how easy it is to see which presentation is password-protected in the picture above? That is why I recommend adding a qualifier in the name of any PowerPoint presentation you password protect.

2. Enter the correct password and click OK

Regardless of whether you have a Password to Open or a Password to Modify, enter the correct password and click OK to get full editing rights to your document.

You cannot remove a password in the Read-Only version of PowerPoint that you can access with the Password to Modify .

If you do not know the password to the presentation, you cannot remove the password from the document (sorry). This is why I recommend saving a non-password-protected version of your file first.

3. Open the Save As dialog box

Once you have successfully opened the password-protected presentation, now you can remove the password. To get started, hit F12 or Ctrl + Shift + S to open the Save As dialog box.

4. Open the Tools dropdown

Inside the Save As dialog box, click to open the Tools dropdown.

5. Select General Options

Inside the Tools dropdown, select General Options to remove the password from your presentation.

6. Select and delete the password

Depending on what type of password was added to your presentation, you should see a sequence of circles or asterisks marks in either the Password to Open or Password to Modify option as pictured below.

Simply select the password in the dialog box and hit either Delete or Backspace on your keyboard.

Two things you cannot do in this dialog box are:

• You cannot view the password. So if you open a password-protected presentation on your computer, your colleague cannot sneak a peek at the password when you are not looking.
• You cannot password-protect your presentation with both types of passwords. You will either have a Password to open or a Password to modify , never both (it is impossible).

7. Click OK and then Save

After deleting the password, click OK and then click Save .

This saves your presentation without the password, allowing you to open the file without having to use a password in the future.  If you like, you can also choose to rename your file now that it is no longer password-protected.

8. Double-check the password is removed

Before you forget, double-check that the password has been removed from your presentation.

Close your PowerPoint presentation (Ctrl + W on your keyboard) and then reopen. If you are again asked to enter a password to open or modify the presentation then something went wrong along the way.

If this happens to you, don’t sweat it. It is better to figure this out now (and fix the problem) rather than having your client or colleague email you about the issue.

PowerPoint Password Tips

I cannot stress this enough, DO NOT forget your password.

A number of people have asked whether it is possible to recover a password they have forgotten. Unfortunately, there is no way to retrieve a forgotten password like this that I know of. 

This is why I recommend saving a copy of your original presentation (a non-password protected version) before adding a password to it. That way if you forget your password, you can always go back to the original (non-password protected) document, without having to recreate the wheel.

A few additional PowerPoint password tips are:

Tip #1. Passwords are case sensitive, so watch out for upper case letters. 

That means that locking PowerPoint with the uppercase password ‘OPEN SESAME’ is treated differently than the lowercase password ‘open sesame.’

Tip #2. Make your passwords easy to remember

One way to make your passwords easy to remember is to either reference the client’s name in the password or just used the first four letters of the document.

An example using the client’s name could be m icrosoft open (I recommend using lower-case) if your client is Microsoft

An example using the first four letters for a file called “Quarterly Report” would be quar open (again making it all lower case so it is easier to remember).

Tip #3. Don’t use the same password for all of your presentations

Just like you shouldn’t use the same password for all your personal things, you don’t want to use the same password to open all of your presentations. That is because if someone figures that out, they will be able to open all of your password-protected presentations.

Two important things to remember about password protecting your presentations are:

#1. Most people are not familiar with having to add a password to open a presentation. So, if your password-protect your presentation, warn your clients and colleagues in advance.

#2. There is no way to recover your password if you forget it. So, use an easy to remember password, write it down and better yet, save a non-password-protected version of your presentation that you can always refer to it if necessary.

Thanks for the article! So there is no way to recover the password? I had this problem once and tried googling for it, there are a lot of sites that claim it’s possible. Fortunately it was just an edit password and a simple ppt, so ended up making a new presentation with the same text and pictures.

To my knowledge, there is no way to recover a password. That is why I recommend saving a copy of your presentation without a password before adding one. Sorry I don’t have a better answer for you.

There are various reasons why you would want to encrypt your PowerPoint file with a password . There are two password levels you can implement within a PowerPoint file: a password to open and a password to edit. However, even if you add a password to your presentation, there may come a time when you want to remove it. Or, you may want to change the password. PowerPoint provides a very simple way to add a password. However, there is no obvious or intuitive command to remove or change the password protection.

Follow these steps to learn how to remove and change passwords in PowerPoint 2016 for Windows :

• First, open your password-protected presentation. You might be prompted to type in your password during opening or editing. Do type in your password(s).
• Then, access the File menu, and choose the Save As option, as shown highlighted in blue within Figure 1 , below. You can also use the F12 keyboard shortcut.

• Now, click the Browse button, as shown highlighted in red within Figure 2 , below.

• Doing so brings up the Save As dialog box, as shown in Figure 3 , below. Click the Tools button located at the lower right of the resulting Save As dialog box. From the pop-up menu that appears, select General Options , as shown highlighted in red within Figure 3 .

• This step brings up the General Options dialog box, as shown in Figure 4 , below. As you can see in Figure 4 , this presentation has the Password to open field already populated. To remove the password, just place your cursor in the text box, and delete the password or passwords you want to remove ( Open , Modify , or both). Similarly, overwrite any old passwords with new ones to change your passwords.

• Once the password(s) are deleted or changed, click the OK button.
• You will get back to the Save As dialog box, as shown in Figure 3 , previously on this page. Now, make one of these choices:
• To overwrite your previously password protected file, do not change the file name.
• To make a copy of your password protected file that has the passwords removed or changed, type in a new file name.
• If you choose the former option, PowerPoint will ask you whether you want to replace the existing file with the new file, as shown in Figure 5 , below. Click the Yes button to continue. Alternatively, if you chose the latter option, then you will see no such warning and PowerPoint will continue saving the presentation to a new file name.

• Save your presentation often.

How to Remove Password Protection from a PowerPoint File

MS PowerPoint files (*.ppt and *.pptx) can be protected by two types of passwords: a password to open a document and a password to make changes. These are two fundamentally different file protections. Below we describe how to remove the password from the PowerPoint file for each case in detail.

1. How to Remove a Password to Open a PowerPoint File (If You Lost It)

Losing a password to open a file is the most common cause, and, unfortunately, the most difficult. The fact is that all PowerPoint files that are password protected for opening are securely encrypted with a strong algorithm. This means that it is impossible to hack a file and remove password protection from it. The only way to open such a document is to enter the correct password. When you enter the password, MS Office generates a private key and decrypts the entire document with it. A document is decrypted only if the correct password is entered, that’s it.

As you may have guessed, the process of recovering the password of your PowerPoint document is a thorough and consistent search among a huge number of options until the correct password is found. This is a long and resource-intensive process. Microsoft PowerPoint is one of the popular presentation software used to create slide-based presentations for business, education, and other purposes.

Microsoft PowerPoint allows protecting a file from being opened by unauthorized users. The only person who knows the password can view or modify your file. This protection cannot fully secure the file from brute-force password attacks, so remember to set complex passwords created by password generators. Microsoft PowerPoint supports several levels of protection. You can set the password required to view the document (open the file). You can also set a permission password to restrict specific actions such as editing a presentation, commenting, or tracking changes.

How to Unlock PowerPoint Presentation When Forgot Password

In order to protect our PowerPoint presentation from unauthorized access and modification, most of us choose to set a protected password on it. But unfortunately, if forgot the PowerPoint presentation encrypted password , we are locked out of the file too. How to unlock the PPT presentation password without damage?

Follow this article to get the method, and just have a try.

Unlock PowerPoint presentation with encrypted password

If you haven't forgotten your PowerPoint presentation password, you can unlock it in the normal way with the protection password.

However, if you forgot your PowerPoint file password, first you can recover the encrypted password, and then use it to unlock your PowerPoint presentation in the normal way.

Step 1: Get an Office or PowerPoint password recovery tool.

1.1 Download PowerPoint Password Tuner from the site.

1.2 Install and launch it on the computer where you want to recover PPT password.

Step 2: Recover your PowerPoint presentation password.

2.1 On the password program click on Open button.

2.2 Select the PowerPoint file that need to be unlocked.

2.3 Select the recovery type.

Below the Recovery Tyoe, there are four types to select, Normal Type, Mask Type, Dictionary Type, and Smart Type.

2.4 Adjust recovery settings.

Here only take Normal and Mask recovery type for example.

Normal: This type of recovery will try all possible character combinations in the character range and length you set.

If select Normal recovery type, click on Range , and select the character range. And then click on Length to set the maximal password length and minimal password length.

Mask type: If some part of the password is still remembered by you, specify it by the Mask recovery type, which will faster than the Normal recovery type.

When select Mask recovery type, click on Range, select the character range. Specify your password on the Mask text box. You can use the "?" symbol to take place of the character that you don't remember or not sure. For instance, your password is "cocosenor", but you only remember the first four characters, you can replace the forgotten characters with "?", like "coco?????".

2.5 After adjusting attack settings, click on Start button.

If the password is long and complicate, it may take times to recover, please wait for it patiently, until the password is recovered successfully.

Step 3: Unlock your PPT presentation with the password.

3.1 If the password is recovered, it will be showed on the dialog box, click on Copy , click on Open , paste the password on it, and then press Enter. Your PowerPoint presentation is decrypted successfully!

3.2 Click on File → Info → Protect Presentation → Encrypt with Password .

3.3 Clear the password from the text box, and click on OK . Your PowerPoint presentation has been unlocked, and you can open it without password the next time.

This method applies to PowerPoint 2016, PowerPoint 2013, PowerPoint 2010, PowerPoint 2007, PowerPoint 2003, and PowerPoint 2000.

Unlock your PPT file with DocRecrypt tool

When you are creating a password protection on your PowerPoint file, Microsoft recommend you to save the password to a safe place, because they can't help you to find back the lost or forgotten password.

In fact, Microsoft has provided a free password tool - DocRecrypt, for Office users to unlock their locked files including Excel/Word/PowerPoint 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016.

But, the steps to use the DocRecrypt tool may be a little complicated for newbie, because it is designed for IT Professionals.

To remove or reset PowerPoint Presentation password with DocRecrypt tool, you should meet the following requirements:

(1) The new Office DocRecrypt tool

(2) The PowerPoint file has an embedded public key.

(3) Permission and access to public and private keys that are associated with the certificate.

To use DocRecrypt tool to remove pptx file password on IT computer:

1. Import the matching private key to the certificate in Windows Certificate Manager by the Certificate Import Wizard.

2. Get the DocRecrypt tool and install it on IT computer.

3. Open the Docrecrypt tool command line and remove PowerPoint file password with the following command:

DocRecrypt –i lockedfile

Unlock PowerPoint presentation editing password

If you still can open the PPT and read it, but can't edit it, it means the PPT is marked as final and it is read-only.

How to unlock the read-only PowerPoint presentation to edit it? It is just a piece of cake! If don't believe, have a try!

1. Open your read-only PPT file.

2. Click File → Info → Protect Presentation → Mark as Final .

Password protection for presentations in PowerPoint

A password helps to prevent other people from opening or modifying a presentation.

Caution:  When you create a password for a presentation, record the password and keep it in a secure place. If you lose the password, it can't be retrieved and you won't be able open or gain access to the presentation.

Add password protection to a file

Select File > Info .

Select Protect Presentation > Encrypt with Password .

In the Password box, enter the password you'd like to use. Select OK .

PowerPoint prompts you to confirm the password by entering it once more.

Save the file to ensure the password takes effect.

Password protection isn't supported in PowerPoint for ODP (Open Document Presentation) files. 

Remove a password from a file

Removing a password from a document is a simple process, but you have to know the original password.

Open the presentation whose password you want to remove.

Clear the password in the Password box, and then click OK .

Co-authoring a password-protected file

If you attempt to open a password-protected file that someone else is currently working on, you'll be able to open it, but you won't be able to edit it. You'll see the file in read-only mode.

Add or remove protection in your document, workbook, or presentation

Require a password to open a presentation

Click File > Passwords .

Under Password to open , select the Encrypt this presentation and require a password to open check box.

In the New password box, type a password.

Note:  To create a strong password, use at least seven characters and include a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and non-alphabetic characters such as !,$, #, and %. Do not include your account name or other personal information.

In the Verify box, type the password again, and then click Set Password .

Click OK , and then save your presentation.

Tip:  To remove the password, clear the Encrypt this presentation and require a password to open check box, click OK , and then save your presentation.

Require a password to modify a presentation

You can add a password so that only authorized users can modify a presentation. Unauthorized users can still open the presentation and then save it by using a different file name.

Under Password to modify , select the Require a password to modify the presentation check box.

Tip:  To remove the password, clear the Require a password to modify the presentation check box, click OK , and then save your presentation.

Change a password to open or modify a presentation

Under Password to open or Password to modify , click Change Password .

In the New password box, type the new password.

To open a password-protected presentation: Enter the password for the file in the box.

Passwords are case-sensitive. Make sure you don't accidentally have Caps Lock turned on.

You can try again if you enter an incorrect password.

The file can't be opened without the password. If you don't know the password, you'll have to check with the person that encrypted the file. 

For ODP (Open Document Presentation) files, password protection isn't supported in PowerPoint for the web.

Top 8 Fixes for PowerPoint Not Displaying Pictures on Windows

Microsoft PowerPoint can be frustrating when it fails to display pictures in your presentation on your Windows 10 or 11 PC. You may see errors like ‘This picture can’t be displayed’ along with a red X sign in place of the image. Whether the issue only affects specific slides or an entire presentation, you can fix that error with little troubleshooting and save yourself from embarrassment.

There can be several reasons for such an error, like corrupted image files , misconfigured settings, or a corrupt PowerPoint installation. In this guide, we’ve listed a few effective solutions to make Microsoft PowerPoint load images again.

1. Remove and Add the Picture Again

Microsoft PowerPoint may fail to load an image if it is not added completely to the presentation file. Additionally, if you have added a picture link and the image file is moved to a different location before you saved the presentation, PowerPoint will not be able to find it. You can add the image(s) again to fix such issues.

Step 1: Open Microsoft PowerPoint on your PC. Right-click on the image that is not loading and select Cut.

Step 2: Switch to the Insert tab, click on Pictures, and select This Device.

Step 3: Locate and select the picture you want to add from your computer and click the Insert button.

Alternatively, you can also select the Stock Images or Online Pictures option in to add images from online sources.

Browse through various categories or use the search bar to locate the images you want to add, select them, and click the Insert button at the bottom.

2. Save the File in a Different Location

If Microsoft PowerPoint is unable to load images even after you reinsert them, try saving the file in a different location and see if that helps. Open your PowerPoint presentation and press F12 to bring up the Save As dialog box. Select a different location for your file and click Save.

Close the PowerPoint presentation and reopen it to check if the pictures load properly.

3. Disable Image Compression

Microsoft PowerPoint allows you to compress images in your presentation to reduce the overall file size. While this makes it easier to share presentations with others via email, it can also end up breaking some of the images in your presentation.

To avoid this, you need to prevent PowerPoint from compressing images in your file by following the steps below.

Step 1: Open Microsoft PowerPoint and click the File menu at the top-left corner.

Step 2: Click on Options in the bottom left corner.

Step 3: Select the Advanced tab from the left sidebar. Scroll down to the ‘Image Size and Quality’ section and tick the ‘Do not compress images in file’ option. Then, click OK.

4. Allow PowerPoint to Download Online Content

Do you face problems with the stock or online images in PowerPoint? That could happen if you have prevented PowerPoint from downloading online content, causing the Stock Images and Online Pictures options to appear grayed out. Here’s how to fix that.

Step 2: Select Options from the left pane.

Step 3: In the PowerPoint Options window, click the General tab. Then, click the Privacy Settings button in the right pane.

Step 4: Tick the checkboxes that read ‘Turn on experiences that download online content’ and ‘Turn on all connected experiences.’ Then, click OK.

Restart PowerPoint to apply the above changes and check if the issue occurs after that.

5. Turn Off Hardware Acceleration

When you enable hardware acceleration in PowerPoint, it offloads some of the graphical processing tasks from your CPU to the GPU to achieve better performance. However, if this feature malfunctions, PowerPoint may have trouble loading images. You can try disabling this feature to see if that helps.

Step 1: Open PowerPoint and click the File menu at the top-left corner.

Step 2: Click on Options at the bottom-left corner.

Step 3: In the Advanced tab, clear the checkbox that reads ‘Disable Slide Show hardware graphics acceleration.’ Then, click OK.

6. Repair the Problematic File

If Microsoft PowerPoint does not display pictures only in a specific presentation, the file may be corrupt. You can try using the built-in file repair option in PowerPoint to fix the presentation.

Step 1: Open PowerPoint and press the Control + O keyboard shortcut. In the Open tab, click the Browse option.

Step 2: Locate and select your PowerPoint file. Then, click the downward arrow next to Open to select Open and Repair.

After PowerPoint repairs the presentation, the images should load fine.

7. Make Sure PowerPoint is Updated

Using an outdated version of Microsoft PowerPoint can also lead to such problems. This can happen if you have disabled automatic updates for Office apps on your Windows PC . Here’s how you can check for updates manually in PowerPoint.

Step 2: Navigate to the Account tab. Click Update Options and select Update Now.

8. Run the Office Repair Tool

If PowerPoint does not display pictures even after you update it, there may be a problem with its installation on your Windows PC. Fortunately, Microsoft includes an Office repair tool that can automatically fix such issues with Microsoft PowerPoint . Here’s how to run it.

Step 1: Press the Windows + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run dialog box. Type appwiz.cpl in the box and press Enter.

Step 2: In the Programs and Features window, select the Microsoft Office product on the list and click the Change button at the top.

He Made a PowerPoint on Mothers Starving in Gaza. Then He Lost His Government Job.

A senior USAID adviser said he was pressured to resign days after the agency censored his presentation.

Alexander Smith’s PowerPoint presentation doesn’t appear designed to court controversy. The slides, focused on declining maternal health in Gaza, cite public health data from the United Nations and World Health Organization. His employer, the U.S. Agency for International Development, had selected him to share it at the government agency’s Global Gender Equality Conference.

But just before the conference, an issue of contention emerged.

A single slide mentioned international humanitarian law in context of the health crisis in Gaza. USAID staff cited the slide and discussion of international law as potential fodder for leaks, documents and emails Smith shared with The Intercept show. Despite Smith’s willingness to make revisions, his presentation was eventually canceled. On the last day of the conference, he found himself out of a job.

“I thought it is really obscene that misinformation can go out freely out into the world [about Gaza], but I can’t talk about the reality of starving pregnant women,” said Smith, who worked as a contracted senior adviser at USAID on gender and material health. “We can’t even whisper about that in a conference on that topic.”

In a statement to The Intercept, the agency declined to comment on personnel matters but said Smith was not forced out over the presentation. “As an Agency, we value and intentionally seek out a diversity of viewpoints,” said a USAID spokesperson.

Smith, who is both a lawyer and public health expert, had worked for USAID for four years. In February, he submitted an abstract for his presentation — titled “An Intersectional Gender Lens in Gaza: Ethnicity, Religion, Geography, Legal Status, and Maternal/Child Health Outcomes” — which was accepted for the small USAID conference. He was scheduled to present on May 22 in Washington, D.C.

On May 10, two weeks before the conference, the State Department issued a report — dubbed the “NSM-20” report — about Israel’s compliance with international law. As The Intercept reported , USAID officials had urged Secretary of State Antony Blinken to find Israel’s commitments to international law were not credible based on its conduct in Gaza since October.

Blinken’s report hedged considerably, expressing “deep concerns” about “action and inaction” by the Israeli government that resulted in “insufficient” aid delivery to Gaza, while concluding Israel was not “prohibiting or otherwise restricting the transport or delivery of U.S. humanitarian assistance.”

At the conference, Smith wanted to touch on international humanitarian law. His slides on the topic did not mention Israel specifically, the presentation shows.

“I wasn’t planning to stand up and yell ‘Israel is committing genocide,’” Smith said. “I was stating the laws.”

The rest of Smith’s presentation drew on data from the U.N., WHO, and other sources about the decline of maternal health in Gaza, including reports about Israel’s devastating attacks on Gaza’s health infrastructure .

When officials in USAID’s Middle East bureau reviewed Smith’s presentation days before the event, they flagged the slide on international humanitarian law, in particular.

“REMOVE – This framing is unnecessary for the subsequent slides,” wrote Erika Yepsen, a public affairs official for the bureau, in a comment. “This is an inappropriate venue to be commenting on Israel’s compliance with IHL.”

The U.S. government’s “assessment of Israel’s compliance with IHL is a major point of contention across the Hill,” Yepsen wrote in the comment. She recommended that the Middle East bureau “not clear any version of this presentation with this topic included” due to “problematic language.”

In an email with other USAID advisers, Yepsen, who did not respond to The Intercept’s inquiries, noted that “the NSM-20 report has made national news and Israel’s compliance remains an unresolved issue.”

Smith agreed to cut the slide, the email thread shows. In line with administration guidelines, he also agreed to cut references to “Palestine,” including from the title of a chart produced by the United Nations Population Fund Palestine. He also agreed to other changes to comply with agency talking points and messaging, and offered to present without any slides, Smith told The Intercept.

Ultimately, USAID officials nixed the entire presentation. “Please remove this from the conference agenda,” wrote Allison Salyer, a senior adviser in the bureau, in an email. Salyer did not respond to The Intercept.

In a statement, a USAID official declined to discuss “specific personnel matters” but said Smith’s “work responsibilities did not include supporting USAID’s response to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza or the devastating impacts of the conflict on women and children.”

USAID officials did not raise concerns over Smith’s expertise in any of the documents reviewed by The Intercept, focusing instead on his language choices.

“No one ever asked me before the conference if Gaza was outside my scope or used that as a reason not to talk about it,” Smith said. “Certainly the 35 people who reviewed and approved my abstract thought it was appropriate for me to speak on Gaza.”

Smith chose to attend the conference nonetheless. On the final day, he tried to ask the head of USAID , Samantha Power , why his presentation was canceled, but he was not called on, Smith said.

Late last week, Smith said he got a call from the company that contracted his position with USAID. He was told he could either resign or be terminated over “personality differences.”

“What happened to me sends a very clear signal to staff: We don’t talk about Gaza.”

The company would not tell him if the presentation contributed to USAID’s dissatisfaction with his performance, Smith said.

On Monday, Smith joined the growing ranks of Biden administration officials who have resigned over Gaza .

“Actively silencing discussion of Palestinian lives and the ongoing global health disaster is dehumanizing,” Smith wrote in a resignation letter to Power, “not only to the people of Gaza, but to the people of the United States who deserve to know the extent to which we are paying for and supporting crimes against Palestinians.”

“What happened to me sends a very clear signal to staff: We don’t talk about Gaza,” Smith told The Intercept.
