টেবিলের উপর রাখা যায় এমন যন্ত্রটিকে আগে ইলেকট্রনিক যন্ত্র গণক বলা হত।কিন্তু বর্তমানে এই যন্ত্রটির কাজ শুধু গণনাতে সীমাবদ্ধ নয়।এই যন্ত্রের সাহায্যে কত রকমের কাজ হয়ে থাকে তা বলে শেষ করা যায়না।এ এক এমন যন্ত্র যা মানুষের কর্মজীবনের প্রতিটি ক্ষেত্রে অবলীলায় অক্ষরে অক্ষরে প্রতিটি হুকুম পালন করে।

কম্পিউটারের সংজ্ঞা:

কম্পিউটার কি আমরা সবাই প্রায় জানি। কম্পিউটার হল অনেকগুলো বৈদ্যুতিক যন্ত্রের সমাহার। যা বৈদ্যুতিক প্রবাহের মাধ্যমে যৌক্তিক কার্যাবলী সম্পাদন করে থাকে। কম্পিউটার বৈদ্যুতিক তরঙ্গকে নিজের সংকেতে রূপান্তর করে ব্যবহারকারী কর্তৃক কমান্ডের দ্বারা উদ্ভূত সমস্যার সমাধান করে থাকে।

কম্পিউটার শব্দটি একটি ল্যাটিন শব্দ কম্পিউট থেকে এসেছে। কম্পিউট শব্দের আভিধানিক অর্থ হলো গণনা করা। তাই আভিধানিকভাবে কম্পিউটার হলো একটি গণনা করার যন্ত্র। কিন্তু আজকাল এই কম্পিউটার এখন শুধু গণনা করার কাজের মধ্যে সীমাবদ্ধ নেই, বরং এর যন্ত্রটি এখন আরো নানা কাজে বহুল্ভাবে ব্যবহৃত হচ্ছে। 

কম্পিউটার তৈরির ইতিহাস:

কে তৈরি করল কম্পিউটার নামক জাদুর বাক্সটা? এ প্রশ্নের উত্তরে সবার আগে যার নাম আসে তিনি হলেন বিখ্যাত ব্রিটিশ গণিতজ্ঞ চালর্স ব্যাবেজ। তিনি হলেন আধুনিক কম্পিউটারের জনক। কিন্তু কম্পিউটার তৈরির ইতিহাস প্রায় আজ থেকে পাঁচ হাজার বছরের পুরোনো! প্রায় পাঁচ হাজার বছর আগে গ্রিক সভ্যতায় “অ্যাবাক্যাস” নামে এক ধরনের গণনা যন্ত্র আবিষ্কৃত হয়েছিল।

পরবর্তীকালে চীনসহ পৃথিবীর অনেক দেশেই ‘অ্যাবাক্যাস” ব্যবহৃত হতো। এর পর ১৬৪২ সালে ১৯ বছর বয়সী ফরাসি বিজ্ঞানী ব্লেইজ প্যাসকেল সর্বপ্রথম যান্ত্রিক ক্যালকুলেটর বা যন্ত্র গণক আবিষ্কার করেন। পরবর্তীতে চার্লস ব্যাবেজ গবেষণা করেছিলেন এই যন্ত্র গণক কে আরও জটিলতর কোনো কাজে লাগানো যায় কিনা।

কিন্তু প্রয়োজনীয় যন্ত্র ও মূলধনের অভাবে তিনি কাজ সফল করতে পারেননি। কম্পিউটার বিজ্ঞানের সত্যিকারের সূচনা হয় আল্যান টুরিং এর প্রথমে তাত্ত্বিক ও পরে ব্যবহারিক গবেষণার মধ্য দিয়ে। ১৮৩৩ সালে আধুনিক কম্পিউটারের সূত্রপাত হয়। 

কম্পিউটারের বিভিন্ন প্রকারভেদ:

কম্পিউটারের গঠন ও প্রচলন নীতির ভিত্তি করে একে তিনটি ভাগে ভাগ করা যায়। যথা –

• অ্যানালগ কম্পিউটার
• ডিজিটাল কম্পিউটার
• হাইব্রিড কম্পিউটার

আকার, দাম ও ব্যবহারের গুরুত্বের উপর ভিত্তি করে ডিজিটাল কম্পিউটারকে আবার চার ভাগে ভাগ করা যায়। যথা:

• সুপার কম্পিউটার
• মিনি কম্পিউটার
• মেইনফ্রেম কম্পিউটার
• মাইক্রোকম্পিউটার

মাইক্রো কম্পিউটার দু ধরনের হয়ে থাকে, যথাঃ 

১)ডেস্কটপ ও ২)ল্যাপটপ

কম্পিউটার মগজ ও তার কার্যকারিতা :

কম্পিউটার ঠিক যেন যন্ত্র মস্তিষ্ক। আমাদের বিভিন্ন সমস্যার সমাধান করে তার মাথায় ধরে রাখা স্মৃতি অর্থাৎ তথ্যের প্রয়োগ ঘটিয়ে।তিনটি প্রধান অংশ নিয়ে গঠিত কম্পিউটারের এই মগজ।এই তিনটি অংশ হলো –

সেন্ট্রাল প্রসেসিং ইউনিট (সিপিইউ)- সিপিইউকে কম্পিউটারের মগজ বলা হয়। কারণ এই কম্পিউটারের এই অংশ যেকোনো সমস্যা সংক্রান্ত তথ্য নিয়ে কাজ করে।

ইনপুট – ইনপুটের কাজ হলো তথ্য অনুযায়ী নির্দেশ গ্রহণ করে। কী-বোর্ড, মাউস, ডিস্ক, স্ক্যানার, কার্ড রিডার, ডিজিটাল ক্যামেরা ইত্যাদি হলো ইনপুট যন্ত্রপাতি। 

আউটপুট – ইনপুটে পাওয়া নির্দেশকে ফলাফল হিসেবে প্রকাশ করে কম্পিউটারের আউটপুট অংশ। মনিটর, প্রিন্টার, ডিস্ক, স্পিকার, প্রোজেক্টর, হেড ফোন ইত্যাদি কম্পিউটারের আউটপুট যন্ত্রপাতি। 

কম্পিউটারে নির্দেশ ও তথ্য প্রদানের জন্য যে নির্দিষ্ট ভাষার প্রয়োগ করা হয়ে থাকে তাকে বলে প্রোগ্রামিং ল্যাঙ্গুয়েজ।আর যে সমস্ত তথ্য নিয়ে কম্পিউটার কাজ করে তাকে বলে ডেটা বা উপাত্ত। কম্পিউটারের সব থেকে বড় উপযোগিতা হচ্ছে এটি একসাথে অনেক তথ্য ও প্রোগ্রামের রদবদল করার মাধ্যমে নানারকম কাজ করতে পারে।

সেই সাথে আধুনিক কম্পিউটারের রয়েছে অত্যন্ত দ্রুত সমস্যা সমাধানের ক্ষমতা, বিপুল পরিমাণ উপাত্তকে সুন্দরকরে সাজিয়ে মস্তিষ্কে ধরে রাখার ক্ষমতা ও তথ্য বিশ্লেষণের নির্ভুল ক্ষমতা। ফলে দৈনন্দিন জীবনে কম্পিউটার তার বিচিত্র রকমের কাজ সম্পন্ন করার ক্ষমতার মাধ্যমে অনেক ভূমিকা পালন করছে। 

কম্পিউটারের ব্যাবহার:

কম্পিউটারের ব্যাবহার আমাদের দেশে সমস্ত ক্ষেত্রে, ব্যাক্তিগত ও সামাজিক জীবনে নিয়ে এসেছে এক বিরাট পরিবর্তন। কম্পিউটার কর্ম জীবনে ব্যাবহারিক ক্ষেত্রে খুলে দিয়েছে একের পর এক নতুন দিগন্ত।

অনেক জন মানুষের কাজ একমুহূর্তে নির্ভুল ভাবে করতে পারে কম্পিউটার। দৈনন্দিন জীবনে সবকাজেই রয়েছে কম্পিউটারের ব্যাবহার।ব্যাংকের কাজ নির্ভুল ও তাড়াতাড়ি করে দেয়। শেয়ার বাজারকে নির্ভুল প্রদর্শন করে।

স্কুল,কলেজ অফিস আদালত সমস্ত ক্ষেত্রে তথ্য জমার কাজ করে।চিকিৎসা বিজ্ঞানের ক্ষেত্রেও কম্পিউটারের ব্যাবহার উল্লেখযোগ্য।মুদ্রণ শিল্পে এক যুগান্তকারী পরিবর্তন এনে দিয়েছে কম্পিউটার। কম্পিউটারে উপলব্ধ ইন্টারনেট পরিষেবা গোটা পৃথিবীকে এনে দিয়েছে হাতের মুঠোয়।

শুধু কাজের ক্ষেত্রেই কম্পিউটারের ব্যাবহার সীমাবদ্ধ নয়।কম্পিউটারের প্রমোদ মূল্যও যথেষ্ট। অনলাইনে গেম খেলা,গান শোনা, সিনেমা দেখা প্রভৃতি কাজে কম্পিউটার ব্যাবহার করে থাকি আমরা। টিকিট বুকিং, পরীক্ষার ফল প্রকাশ থেকে পাত্র পাত্রী নির্বাচন, অপরাধী খোঁজা সবকিছুতেই কম্পিউটার -তাই নিঃসন্দেহে বলা যায় আধুনিক সভ্যতা কম্পিউটার ছাড়া অচল।

বিভিন্ন ক্ষেত্রে কম্পিউটারের ভূমিকাঃ

আমাদের নিত্যদিনের বিভিন্ন ক্ষেত্রে কম্পিউটার অনেক অবদান রাখছে। কম্পিউটার আমাদের দৈনন্দিন জীবনকে করেছে আরো বেশি সহজ ও দ্রুত। শিক্ষা, চিকিৎসা, কৃষি, যোগাযোগসহ আরো অনেক ক্ষেত্রে কম্পিউটার তার অবদান রেখে চলছে। 

ক। শিক্ষাক্ষেত্রে কম্পিউটারঃ বিভিন্ন ক্ষেত্রে কম্পিউটার অবদান বর্ণনা করতে হলে শুরুতেই শিক্ষক্ষেত্রে কম্পিউটারের ভূমিকা নিয়ে বলতে হবে। আধুনিক শিক্ষাপদ্ধতির অনন্য বাহন কম্পিউটার। কম্পিউটারের মাধ্যমে বিশ্বের অনেক দেশে শিক্ষাদান করা হচ্ছে।

কম্পিউটারের অনলাইন ক্লাসরুম, ডিজিটাল ক্লাসরুম ব্যবস্থা শিক্ষাক্ষেত্রে এনেছে নতুন এক অধ্যয়। বিজ্ঞান, ভূগোল, ইতিহাস ইত্যাদি বিষয়ে নানারকম চিত্র ও ভিডিও প্রদর্শনির মাধ্যমে ক্লাস নেওয়া হচ্ছে, ফলে ছাত্র ছাত্রীরা নানাভাবে উপকৃত হচ্ছে। পরীক্ষার ফলাফল তৈরি, উচ্চশিক্ষায়, বিভিন্ন গবেষণায় এমনকি শিক্ষার বাহন পুস্তক প্রকাশনাতেও কম্পিউটার অবদান রেখে চলছে প্রতিদিন। 

খ। চিকিৎসাক্ষেত্রে কম্পিউটারঃ   কম্পিউটার চিকিৎসাক্ষেত্রে অসামান্য অবদান রাখছে।  সনাতন চিকিৎসা পদ্ধতিতে আধুনিক চিকিৎসা ব্যবস্থায় রূপ দেওয়ার পেছনে রয়েছে কম্পিউটার। এর মাধ্যমে ওষুধ প্রদান, অনলাইন ডাক্তার দেখানে থেকে শুরু করে চিকিৎসাক্ষেত্রে নতুন নতুন গবেষণা হচ্ছে।

এছাড়াও বিভিন্ন মহামারির নিয়ন্ত্রণ যেমন সহজ হয়েছে তেমনি বড় বড় কঠিন অস্ত্রপাচারও আজকাল কম্পিউটারের মাধ্যমে সম্পন্ন হচ্ছে। ফলে রোগ প্রতিরোধ যেমন আগে থেকে সহজ হয়েছে তেমনি প্রতিকারেও কম্পিউটার রাখছে অবদান।

গ। যোগাযোগ ক্ষেত্রে কম্পিউটারঃ কম্পিউটারকে আরো প্রাণ দিয়েছে বর্তমান ইন্টারনেট ব্যবস্থা। এর মাধ্যমে ঘরে বসেই আমরা পৃথিবীর অন্যপ্রান্তে থাকা কাছের মানুষের সাথে যেমন কথা বলতে পারছি, তেমনি তাদেরকে দেখতেও পাচ্ছি। শুধু কি তাই? কম্পিউটারের মাধ্যমে আমরা চিঠি লিখতে পারছি খুব সহজেই, যা কয়েক সেকেন্ডের মধ্যে পাঠিয়ে দেওয়া যায় প্রাপকের কাছে। 

কম্পিউটার ও বেকার সমস্যা:

কম্পিউটার নামক যন্ত্র দানবের ক্ষমতা অপরসীম। অনেকজন মানুষের কাজ একাই কম সময়ে কম খরচে নির্ভুল ভাবে করতে পারে কম্পিউটার তাই দিন দিন বাড়ছে বেকারত্ব। কল্প বিজ্ঞানীদের আশঙ্কা মানুষের দ্বারা আবিষ্কৃত এই যন্ত্র দানবকে দিয়ে কাজ করাতে করাতে একদিন এমন সময় আসবে,যখন কাজের ক্ষুধায় উন্মত্ত দানব তার সৃষ্টিকর্তা মানুষকেই করবে ক্রীতদাস।

মানুষের কাজ করতে করতে কম্পিউটার বিশাল সংখ্যক মানুষকে করবে বেকার। তবে এই মন্দদিকের বাইরেও কম্পিউটারের সাহায্যে অনেক বেকার যুবক ঘরে বসে তাদের বেকার সমস্যা দূর করতে পারছে। ফ্রিল্যান্সিং, আউটসোর্সিং করে তারা ঘরে বসেই আয় করতে পারছে।

পৃথিবীতে ফ্রিল্যান্সিং ও আউটসোর্সিং এর বাজার দিন দিন বেড়েই চলছে। ফলে নিজেদের সময়, দক্ষতা ও কম্পিউটারকে কাজে লাগিয়ে বেকার সমস্যাও দূরীভূত হচ্ছে। 

কম্পিউটারের অপব্যবহারঃ

কম্পিউটার নিঃসন্দেহে বিজ্ঞানের একটি বিশাল বড় আবিষ্কার। সকল জিনিসের যেমন ভালো দিক আছে, তেমনি তাদের কিছু মন্দ দিকও থাকে। যেকোনো কিছুর অপব্যবহার নিঃসন্দেহে সেই আবিষ্কারকে করে ফেলতে পারে মানুষের জন্য অভিশাপ।

কম্পিউটারের অপব্যবহারের মাধ্যমে সাইবার অপরাধ, হ্যাকিং ইত্যাদি বৃদ্ধি পাচ্ছে। ফলে মানুষের ব্যক্তিগত তথ্য হাতিয়ে নিতে পারছে বেশ কিছু অসাধু মানুষ। এছাড়াও একটানা কম্পিউটারের সামনে বসে থাকার ফলে মানুষের পিঠে ব্যাথা, চোখে সমস্যাসহ আরো অন্যান্য শারীরিক ও মানসিক সমস্যার সৃষ্টি হচ্ছে।

ছাত্র ছাত্রীদের জন্য কম্পিউটার যেমন তাদের শিক্ষাগ্রহণের পদ্ধতিকে আরো সহজ করেছে তেমনি কম্পিউটারের নেশা ছাত্রছাত্রীদেরকে তাদের পড়ালেখা থেকে দূরেও ঠেলে দিচ্ছে। অধিক সময়ে কম্পিউটারের স্ক্রিনে তাকিয়ে থাকায় তারা বেশ কিছু মানসিক সমস্যাতেও ভুগছে। এছাড়া কম্পিউটার প্রযুক্তিকে ব্যবহার করে সন্ত্রাসি, চাঁদাবাজি, ব্লেকমেলসহ আরো অনেক ধরণের অপরাধ বেড়ে চলছে। 

কম্পিউটার আশির্বাদ না অভিশাপ এই নিয়ে যে দ্বন্দ্ব তার অবসান হয়তো কোনোদিনও ঘটবেনা।এ ক সরকারি সমীক্ষায় দেখা গেছে কম্পিউটার ব্যাবহারের ফলে সরকারি ক্ষেত্রে চাকরি সংখ্যা ক্রমশই হ্রাস পেয়েছে যা প্রায় ৩০ শতাংশ।

কিন্তু পাশাপাশি অন্য ক্ষেত্রে চাকরির সুযোগ কিছু বেড়েছে।কম্পিউটারের মতো এক অন্যতম প্রযুক্তি বিজ্ঞানকে বাদ দিয়ে আধুনিক সভ্যতা একবারেই অচল।

ব্যাবহারের পার্থক্যের কারণে কখনও কখনও ক্ষতির কারণ হয়ে দাঁড়ালেও সব মিলিয়ে কম্পিউটার আধুনিক জীবনে এক শুভ পরিবর্তন এনেছে তা স্বীকার করতেই হবে।

আজকের স্মার্ট টিভি, ডিভিডি প্লেয়ার, ডিভিআর ইত্যাদিতে ডিভাইসটিকে ইন্টারনেটের সাথে সংযুক্ত করতে, অ্যাপগুলি চালাতে এবং আরও অনেক কিছু তে কম্পিউটিং সার্কিট রয়েছে।

কিছু সমস্যা এতটাই জটিল যে মানুষের পক্ষে গণনা করা অসম্ভব বা গণনা করতে খুব বেশি সময় লাগবে। কম্পিউটার সময়মতো এই জটিল সমস্যাগুলি সমাধান করতে সহায়তা করে।

আবহাওয়ার ভবিষ্যদ্বাণী : পৃথিবীতে একটি অত্যন্ত জটিল আবহাওয়া সিস্টেম রয়েছে, এবং কম্পিউটার সমস্ত ভেরিয়েবল সংগ্রহ করে এবং আবহাওয়ার প্রতিবেদন তৈরি করে।

পণ্য সিমুলেশন : কিছু পণ্য ইম্প্রুভমেন্টে যাওয়ার আগে, কম্পিউটার সিমুলেট করে কীভাবে তারা বাস্তব জগতে কাজ করবে।

বিগ ডেটা সিমুলেশন : কম্পিউটারের মাধ্যমে সস্তা ডেটা স্টোরেজ সংস্থাগুলি এখন প্রচুর পরিমাণে ডেটা সঞ্চয় করতে পারে।

মানুষ কম্পিউটারের উপর এখন প্রচুর নির্ভরশীল। কম্পিউটার আমাদের জীবনের প্রায় প্রতিটি দিককে প্রভাবিত করে। যদিও কম্পিউটার ব্যবহারের অসুবিধা রয়েছে, আমরা বিশ্বাস করি যে সুবিধাগুলি তার চেয়ে অনেক বেশি।

১. উৎপাদনশীলতা বৃদ্ধি

কম্পিউটার উৎপাদনশীলতা বৃদ্ধি এবং, সফটওয়্যার ডেভেলপমেন্ট করতে সহায়তা করে। সংরক্ষণ, সম্পাদনা, শেয়ার, এবং নথি এবং অক্ষর মুদ্রণ. এই কাজগুলি ও সুন্দর ভাবে করতে পারে।

২. ইন্টারনেটের সাথে সংযোগ করে

একটি কম্পিউটারকে ইন্টারনেটে সংযুক্ত করা মানে হলো এক টি সম্ভাবনাকে আনলক করা। একবার সংযুক্ত হয়ে গেলে, ইচ্ছে মতো এক্সেস করা যায়।

৩. বিপুল পরিমাণ তথ্য সংরক্ষণ করে

কম্পিউটার প্রচুর পরিমাণে তথ্য সংরক্ষণ এবং অ্যাক্সেস করতে সক্ষম। উদাহরণস্বরূপ, ই-বুক পাঠকদের নিমিত্তে কম্পিউটার শত বা হাজার হাজার বই সংরক্ষণ করতে পারে।

এছাড়া ও ডিজিটাল পদ্ধতিতে বই, নথি, সিনেমা, ছবি এবং গান সংরক্ষণ করে,যাতে ডিভাইসগুলির মধ্যে তথ্য অনুসন্ধান এবং ভাগ করে নিয়ে দ্রুত তার কী প্রয়োজন তা খুঁজে পাওয়া যায়। এটি মিডিয়ার অ-ডিজিটাল সংস্করণ তৈরিতে ব্যবহৃত কাগজের প্রয়োজনীয়তা দূর করে।

৪. তথ্যের মাধ্যমে বাছাই,, সংগঠিত এবং অনুসন্ধান করতে সহায়তা করে

পূর্ববর্তী উদাহরণে দেখা গেছে যে, কম্পিউটার হাজার হাজার বই সংরক্ষণ করার ক্ষমতা রাখে। একবার কোনো বই কম্পিউটারে সংরক্ষণ করা হলে, সেগুলো বিভাগগুলিতে বাছাই করা যেতে পারে, বর্ণানুক্রমিক করা যেতে পারে এবং কয়েক সেকেন্ডের মধ্যে কী খুঁজছে তা খুঁজে পেতে অনুসন্ধান করা যেতে পারে। উদাহরণস্বরূপ, ক্যান্সারের জন্য স্ক্রিনকে সহায়তা করার জন্য ডিজাইন করা কম্পিউটার সফটওয়্যার রয়েছে।

৫. সবাইকে কানেক্টেড রাখে।

কম্পিউটার ই-মেইল এবং সামাজিক নেটওয়ার্কিংএর মাধ্যমে প্রত্যেককে দূরপাল্লার বন্ধু এবং পরিবারের সাথে কানেক্টেড রাখতে সহায়তা করে। কেউ স্কাইপের মতো অনলাইন ফোরাম, চ্যাট এবং ভিওআইপি পরিষেবার মাধ্যমে এই আগ্রহ ভাগ করে নেওয়ার জন্য আরও লক্ষ লক্ষ লোকের সাথে সংযোগ স্থাপন করতে পারে। ইন্টারনেটে যোগাযোগ সম্পর্কে আরেকটি দুর্দান্ত বিষয় হলো এটি অন্যান্য ধরনের যোগাযোগের তুলনায় দ্রুত।

৬. অর্থ উপার্জন করতে সহায়তা করে

যখন ইন্টারনেটের সাথে সংযুক্ত থাকে, তখন কম্পিউটার বিভিন্ন উপায়ে অর্থ উপার্জন করতে সহায়তা করতে পারে। উদাহরণস্বরূপ, একটি অনলাইন স্টোর তৈরি করা এবং চালানো একটি অফলাইন দোকান থাকার চেয়ে সস্তা। এছাড়াও, একবার অনলাইনে, স্টোর বা পণ্য একটি বিশ্বব্যাপী শ্রোতা হয়ে গেলে বিশ্বের যে কারোর কাছে বিক্রি করা যায়।

৭. কর্মসংস্থানের সুযোগ বৃদ্ধি করে

কীভাবে কম্পিউটার ব্যবহার করতে হয় তা জানা অথবা কম্পিউটার থাকা কর্মসংস্থানের ক্ষেত্র বিস্তার করে এবং এমনকি বাড়ি থেকেও আয় করার সুযোগ করে দেয়। উদাহরণস্বরূপ, ২০২০ সালের কোভিড-১৯ প্রাদুর্ভাবে, অনেক অফিসের বাড়ি থেকে কাজ করার জন্য তাদের কর্মীদের প্রয়োজন ছিল। কীভাবে কম্পিউটার ব্যবহার করতে হয় তা জানা থাকার কারণে এবং বাড়িতে কম্পিউটার থাকাতে অনেক অফিস কর্মীকে সঙ্কটে সময়ও তাদের কাজ চালিয়ে যেতে পেরেছিল।

৮. মানুষের ক্ষমতা উন্নত করে

কম্পিউটার ব্যবহার করে বানান, শব্দভাণ্ডার, ব্যাকরণ.গণিত সমাধান, মেমরি ইত্যাদির মতো ক্ষমতা উন্নত করা যায়, অথবা কম্পিউটার তার কঠিন সময়ে সহকারী হিসেবে একজনকে সহায়তা যায়।

কম্পিউটার ব্যবহারের অসুবিধা

• কার্পাল টানেল এবং চোখের চাপ : কম্পিউটারের প্রচুর ইউজের ফলে কার্পাল টানেল সিন্ড্রোমের প্রবণতা বৃদ্ধি পায় যা চোখের স্টেইন বাড়ায়।
• কম্পিউটার স্ক্রিনের সামনে অনেক ক্ষণ বসে থাকলে বেক পেইন হয়।
• কম মনোযোগ স্প্যান এবং খুব বেশি মাল্টিটাস্কিং এর কারণে কম্পিউটার ডিভাইস এবং ইন্টারনেটের সাথে, মানুষ তাৎক্ষণিক পরিতৃপ্তির প্রতি আকৃষ্ট হয়েছে, যা মানসিক ক্ষমতা গুলো কে হ্রাস করে। .
• শেখার পরিধি কে সীমিত করে ফেলে অনেয়া সময় অথবা একটি নির্ভরশীলতা তৈরি করে তবে তা সম্পূর্ণ ইউজারের উপর ডিপেন্ড করে।
• গোপনীয়তা হারানোর সম্ভাবনা থাকে অনেক সময়। কম্পিউটার এত ব্যক্তিগত তথ্য সংরক্ষণ করার সাথে সাথে, এটি অন্যদের হাতে যাওয়ার ঝুঁকিতে রয়েছে।

কম্পিউটারকে কৃত্রিম বুদ্ধিমত্তা এই বিশেষণে বিশেষায়িত করে যেতে পারে এর দক্ষতা, বিকল্প সমাধান ও অন্যান্য বিষয় বিবেচনা করে। কম্পিউটার প্রোগ্রাম যা শিখে এবং মানিয়ে নেয় তা কৃত্রিম বুদ্ধিমত্তা এবং মেশিন লার্নিংয়ের উদীয়মান ক্ষেত্রের অংশ। সুতরাং কম্পিউটারের যথার্থ ব্যবহার নিশ্চিত করে নিজেরদের মেধা এবং কর্ম ক্ষমতা বিকাশে আমাদের এগিয়ে যেতে হবে।

আবিষ্কারের অতীত ইতিহাস

কম্পিউটার আবিষ্কারের সম্ভাবনা নিহিত ছিল একটি সরল শিক্ষণ-সহায়ক যন্ত্রের মধ্যে। যার নাম ছিল অ্যাবাকাস। তার থেকে আবিষ্কৃত হল ক্যালকুলেটর। এটি নড়াচড়া করানো যায় এমন একটি পুঁতির বোর্ড ছিল এর আধার। কিন্তু কমপিউটারের জনক বলা হয় কেম্ব্রিজের অধ্যাপক চার্লস ব্যারেজ নামে এক বিজ্ঞানীকে। ১৯১২ খ্রিস্টাব্দে অ্যানালিটিক্যাল ইঞ্জিন নামে তিনি একটি যন্ত্র আবিষ্কার করেন যা সরল অঙ্ক সরল ভাবেই করতে পারত। 

১৯৩৭ খ্রিস্টাব্দে আমেরিকার হার্ভার্ড বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে হাওয়ার্ড আইকেন নামে এক বিজ্ঞানী একটি যন্ত্র আবিষ্কার করেন যা মার্ক টু নাম দিয়ে আই. বি. এম কর্পোরেশন নামে একটি সংস্থা বাজারে বিক্রি শুরু করে। তারপর থেকেই কমপিউটারের জয়যাত্রা শুরু হয়।

কম্পিউটারের বৈচিত্র্য ও ব্যবহারিক দিক

কমপিউটার কয়েকটি দশকের মধ্যে যথেষ্ট পরিবর্তন এবং পরিবর্ধন লাভ করেছে। মাঝারি ধরনের কমপিউটার P. C. বা পার্সোনাল কমপিউটার থেকে শুরু করে অতিকায় সুপার কমপিউটার অবধি নানা ধরনের কমপিউটার বর্তমানে রয়েছে। সম্প্রতি ভারতে বসানো হয়েছে সুপার কমপিউটার ‘পরম’, এছাড়া আছে মিনি, সুপার-মিনি বা ল্যাপ-টপ কমপিউটার বা বহনযোগ্য ছোটো কমপিউটার। সৃষ্টি হয়েছে কমপিউটারের নানা ভাষা, বেসিক, কোবল, ফরটার্ন, লোটাস ইত্যাদি। 

আধুনিক জীবনের এমন কোনো ক্ষেত্র নেই যেখানে কমপিউটারের প্রয়োগ নেই। যে-কোনো ধরনের করণিকের এবং হিসাব নিকাশের কাজ এই যন্ত্রগণক করে থাকে। যেমন, ব্যাঙ্কের টাকা লেনদেন, ইলেকট্রিক, টেলিফোন, জীবনবীমা প্রভৃতির বিল প্রণয়ন প্রভৃতিতে সারা বিশ্বজুড়ে কমপিউটারের ব্যবহার হচ্ছে। কলকারখানাগুলিতে বিভিন্ন কাজকর্ম, টেলিযোগাযোগ, বিপজ্জনক এবং স্বাস্থ্যের ঝুঁকিজনিত কাজ প্রভৃতি কমপিউটার দক্ষতার সঙ্গে করতে পারে।

অপরিহার্যতা

রোগনির্ণয়, চিকিৎসাবিজ্ঞানের ক্ষেত্রেও কমপিউটারের অবদান কম নয়। শিক্ষাক্ষেত্রে প্রাথমিক থেকে শুরু করে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় পর্যন্ত নানা স্তরে কমপিউটার অপরিহার্য হয়ে উঠেছে। অপরিহার্যতা যে-কোনো ধরনের নথি, যেমন পুলিশ রেকর্ড, ডাটা-ব্যাঙ্ক প্রভৃতির ক্ষেত্রেও কমপিউটার অসাধারণ দক্ষতা লাভ করেছে। 

সাময়িক ও প্রতিরক্ষা ক্ষেত্রে এবং মুদ্রণযন্ত্রের ক্ষেত্রেও কমপিউটার বৈপ্লবিক পরিবর্তন ঘটিয়েছে। খেলাধুলা এবং সংগীত জগতেও এমনকি জ্যোতিষচর্চাতেও কমপিউটার এক নতুন উৎকর্ষ লাভ করেছে এবং সংশ্লিষ্ট ক্ষেত্রগুলিকে উন্নত করে তুলেছে।

প্রযুক্তির জগতে বিপ্লব

কমপিউটার বিজ্ঞান ও প্রযুক্তির জগতে প্রকৃত অর্থেই এক বিপ্লবের সূচনা করেছে। প্রথমত প্রযুক্তির জগতে কমপিউটার বিভিন্ন কাজের ব্যাপারে অবিশ্বাস্য সময়-সংক্ষেপ করেছে। এর ফলে সামাজিক-অর্থনৈতিক ক্ষেত্রে দ্রুত পরিবর্তন হচ্ছে এবং অগ্রগতি ত্বরান্বিত হচ্ছে। 

দ্বিতীয়ত, কমপিউটারের নির্ভুলতা এবং দক্ষতা মানুষের চেয়ে অনেক বেশি হওয়ায় প্রযুক্তির উৎকর্ষ বৃদ্ধি পেয়েছে। 

তৃতীয়ত, কমপিউটার কোনো কোনো ক্ষেত্রে শ্রমিক-খরচ কমিয়ে মূল্যহ্রাস ঘটিয়েছে এবং পণ্যদ্রব্যকে সাধারণ মানুষের আয়ত্তের মধ্যে এনেছে। ফলে, বিজ্ঞান ও প্রযুক্তির সুফল সাধারণ মানুষ ভোগ করতে পারছে। আবহাওয়া, চিকিৎসা প্রভৃতি কয়েকটি ক্ষেত্রে কমপিউটারের সহায়তায় মানুষ এমন পূর্বাভাস সৃষ্টি করতে পারছে, যা অনেক সম্ভাব্য বিপদ থেকে মানুষকে রক্ষা করা যাচ্ছে।

কমপিউটার কিন্তু কুপ্রভাবও কম বিস্তার করেনি। তৃতীয় বিশ্বের গরিব দেশগুলিতে কমপিউটার প্রয়োগের ফলে বেকার সমস্যা তীব্র আকার ধারণ করেছে। কারণ কমপিউটার মানব-শ্রমিকের স্থান নেওয়ায় নিয়োগের ক্ষেত্র সংকুচিত হয়ে পড়েছে। 

প্রথম-বিশ্বের দেশগুলিতে কমপিউটার নির্ভরশীলতা এমন পর্যায়ে গেছে, যেখানে মানুষ নিজের স্বাভাবিক দক্ষতা হারিয়ে ফেলেছে। বিদেশের ডাক্তারেরা জরুরি অবস্থায় কমপিউটারের সাহায্য ছাড়া রোগীর চিকিৎসা করতে পারছে না।

বর্তমান যুগ তাই কম্পিউটারের যুগ হয়ে পড়েছে। কারণ, কম্পিউটার ছাড়া এ যুগ অচল। হয়তো এমন একদিন আসবে—যেদিন মানুষই কম্পিউটার দ্বারা পরিচালিত হবে। মানুষের শুভ বুদ্ধির ফসল কম্পিউটার পৃথিবীতে মঙ্গলের পথ রচনা করে মানবসভ্যতাকে অগ্রগতি দান করবে বলেই বিশ্বাস।

These were the first years of the career of computer in India. I, like many in Indian universities at that time, didn't have a 'personal' computer. Shared with many colleagues an MS-DOS system in the UG Arts building at JU. Looking historically at the narrator's gaze (also possibly at the unprofessional approach of the the Bengali Little Magazine then!) would help the reader.

India is a developing country where development is required in each and every sphere of life. Information &Communication Technology plays a significant role in the social set-up of Indian society. Indian Government has also realized that ICT can offer social benefits, so that the Government has started large programs to improve the level of health, education, agriculture, business and to offer government services to their citizens. Information & Communication Technology producing new forms of social interaction and changing ways that people of our society engage with policies of government. In the present Indian context we can’t deny the importance of ICT as it plays a vital role in communication. The usage of ICT is increasing day by day. So this paper mainly focuses on the social relevance of ICT in India.

The rationale for this paper is that the negative trends in present day communication in media and public language in India seem to have formed a complex web of social and political factors in certain sections of society that go beyond any individual, ideology or situation. To find a solution to this problem we need to look within and examine the disconnect between the roots of language in the Indian society and the use to which language is being put by people in certain sections who are not connected with India's linguistic tradition of discipline of words. It is in this context that the classical texts on communication in India need to be explored and relevant ideas adopted for integrative and accommodative communication. Exploration of Indian intellectual tradition in communication is also relevant in the context of the emerging trend of scholars' challenge from the non-Western world against the appropriateness of Eurocentric paradigm of communication. It is argued that the entire focus in India's linguistic tradition has been on restraint and discipline of words 'Sabdanusanam' in accordance with prescribed norms derived from wider social context to achieve meaningful and harmonious communication in the society.

Bengali Rachana or Bengali essay or বাংলা রচনা is a significant part of Bengali language at school levels and in higher level studies. History of Computers

But, it was for only government use and not for public use. Above all, in the beginning, the computer was a very large and heavy machine.

Working of a Computer 

The computer runs on a three-step cycle namely input, process, and output. Also, the computer follows this cycle in every process it was asked to do. The Independent vowels can be combined with consonants in different manners. For example, it can be joined to right, left, and also above and below. In old type-writers and non-standard Bengali encodings, the vowels that are attached to the left character are written first followed by consonant. The Unicode Standard requires typing order on the script consonant and vowel rather than other way around. This applies whether the vowel visually appears after or before the constant. For the rendering process the visual placement is handled separated. Therefore, if the Unicode encoding process is followed, no reordering of the characters is required.

Randomness in computation wins computer-science ‘Nobel’

A leader in the field of computational theory is the latest winner of the A. M. Turing Award, sometimes described as the ‘Nobel Prize’ of computer science.

Avi Wigderson at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) in Princeton, New Jersey, is known for work straddling several disciplines, and had already won a share of the Abel Prize , a top mathematics award, three years ago.

He receives the Turing Award “for foundational contributions to the theory of computation, including reshaping our understanding of the role of randomness in computation, and for his decades of intellectual leadership in theoretical computer science”, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) in New York City announced on 10 April.

“I was extremely happy, and I didn’t expect this at all,” Wigderson tells Nature . “I’m getting so much love and appreciation from my community that I don’t need prizes.”

‘A towering intellectual force’

Wigderson was born in Haifa, Israel, in 1956. He studied at Technion — Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa and later at Princeton University; he has been at the IAS since 1999. He is known for his work on computational complexity — which studies how certain problems are inherently slow to solve, even in principle — and on randomness in computation. Many practical algorithms make random choices to achieve their objectives more efficiently; in a series of groundbreaking studies in the 1990s, Wigderson and his collaborators showed that conventional, deterministic algorithms can, in principle, be roughly as efficient as ‘randomized’ ones 1 . The results helped to confirm that random algorithms can be as accurate as deterministic ones are.

“Wigderson is a towering intellectual force in theoretical computer science,” said ACM president Yannis Ioannidis in a statement. In addition to Wigderson’s academic achievements, the ACS cited his “friendliness, enthusiasm, and generosity”, which have led him to be a mentor to or collaborate with hundreds of researchers worldwide. Wigderson admits that he is a “big proselytizer” of the intellectual pleasures of his discipline — he wrote a popular book about it and made it freely available on his website . “I think this field is great, and I am happy to explain it to anybody.”

The Turing Award is named after the celebrated British mathematician and code-breaker Alan Turing (1912–54), who in the 1930s laid the conceptual foundations of modern computing. “I feel completely at home with mathematics,” says Wigderson, adding that as an intellectual endeavour, theoretical computer science is indistinguishable from maths. “We prove theorems, like mathematicians.”

Jaime Lewis noticed that her eighth-grade son’s grades were slipping several months ago. She suspected it was because he was watching YouTube during class on his school-issued laptop, and her suspicions were validated. “I heard this from two of his teachers and confirmed with my son: Yes, he watches YouTube during class, and no, he doesn’t think he can stop. In fact, he opted out of retaking a math test he’d failed, just so he could watch YouTube,” she said.

She decided to do something about it. Lewis told me that she got together with other parents who were concerned about the unfettered use of school-sanctioned technology in San Luis Coastal Unified School District, their district in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Because they knew that it wasn’t realistic to ask for the removal of the laptops entirely, they went for what they saw as an achievable win: blocking YouTube from students’ devices. A few weeks ago, they had a meeting with the district superintendent and several other administrators, including the tech director.

To bolster their case, Lewis and her allies put together a video compilation of clips that elementary and middle school children had gotten past the district’s content filters.

Their video opens on images of nooses being fitted around the necks of the terrified women in the TV adaptation of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” It ends with the notoriously violent “Singin’ in the Rain” sequence from “A Clockwork Orange.” (Several versions of this scene are available on YouTube. The one she pointed me to included “rape scene” in the title.) Their video was part of a PowerPoint presentation filled with statements from other parents and school staff members, including one from a middle school assistant principal, who said, “I don’t know how often teachers are using YouTube in their curriculum.”

That acknowledgment gets to the heart of the problem with screens in schools. I heard from many parents who said that even when they asked district leaders how much time kids were spending on their screens, they couldn’t get straight answers; no one seemed to know, and no one seemed to be keeping track.

Eric Prater, the superintendent of the San Luis Coastal Unified School District, told me that he didn’t realize how much was getting through the schools’ content filters until Lewis and her fellow parents raised concerns. “Our tech department, as I found out from the meeting, spends quite a lot of time blocking certain websites,” he said. “It’s a quite time-consuming situation that I personally was not aware of.” He added that he’s grateful this was brought to his attention.

I don’t think educators are the bad guys here. Neither does Lewis. In general, educators want the best for students. The bad guys, as I see it, are tech companies.

One way or another, we’ve allowed Big Tech’s tentacles into absolutely every aspect of our children’s education, with very little oversight and no real proof that their devices or programs improve educational outcomes. Last year Collin Binkley at The Associated Press analyzed public records and found that “many of the largest school systems spent tens of millions of dollars in pandemic money on software and services from tech companies, including licenses for apps, games and tutoring websites.” However, he continued, schools “have little or no evidence the programs helped students.”

It’s not just waste, very likely, of taxpayer money that’s at issue. After reading many of the over 900 responses from parents and educators to my questionnaire about tech in schools and from the many conversations I had over the past few weeks with readers, I’m convinced that the downsides of tech in schools far outweigh the benefits.

Though tech’s incursion into America’s public schools — particularly our overreliance on devices — hyperaccelerated in 2020, it started well before the Covid-19 pandemic. Google, which provides the operating system for lower-cost Chromebooks and is owned by the same parent company as YouTube, is a big player in the school laptop space, though I also heard from many parents and teachers whose schools supply students with other types and brands of devices.

As my newsroom colleague Natasha Singer reported in 2017 (by which point “half the nation’s primary- and secondary-school students” were, according to Google, using its education apps), “Google makes $30 per device by selling management services for the millions of Chromebooks that ship to schools. But by habituating students to its offerings at a young age, Google obtains something much more valuable”: potential lifetime customers.

The issue goes beyond access to age-inappropriate clips or general distraction during school hours. Several parents related stories of even kindergartners reading almost exclusively on iPads because their school districts had phased out hard-copy books and writing materials after shifting to digital-only curriculums. There’s evidence that this is harmful: A 2019 analysis of the literature concluded that “readers may be more efficient and aware of their performance when reading from paper compared to screens.”

“It seems to be a constant battle between fighting for the students’ active attention (because their brains are now hard-wired for the instant gratification of TikTok and YouTube videos) and making sure they aren’t going to sites outside of the dozens they should be,” Nicole Post, who teaches at a public elementary school in Missouri, wrote to me. “It took months for students to listen to me tell a story or engage in a read-aloud. I’m distressed at the level of technology we’ve socialized them to believe is normal. I would give anything for a math or social studies textbook.”

I’ve heard about kids disregarding teachers who tried to limit tech use, fine motor skills atrophying because students rarely used pencils and children whose learning was ultimately stymied by the tech that initially helped them — for example, students learning English as a second language becoming too reliant on translation apps rather than becoming fluent.

Some teachers said they have programs that block certain sites and games, but those programs can be cumbersome. Some said they have software, like GoGuardian, that allows them to see the screens of all the students in their classes at once. But classroom time is zero sum: Teachers are either teaching or acting like prison wardens; they can’t do both at the same time.

Resources are finite. Software costs money . Replacing defunct or outdated laptops costs money . When it comes to I.T., many schools are understaffed . More of the money being spent on tech and the maintenance and training around the use of that tech could be spent on other things, like actual books. And badly monitored and used tech has the most potential for harm.

I’ve considered the counterarguments: Kids who’d be distracted by tech would find something else to distract them; K-12 students need to gain familiarity with tech to instill some vague work force readiness.

But on the first point, I think other forms of distraction — like talking to friends, doodling and daydreaming — are better than playing video games or watching YouTube because they at least involve children engaging with other children or their own minds. And there’s research that suggests laptops are uniquely distracting . One 2013 study found that even being next to a student who is multitasking on a computer can hurt a student’s test scores.

On the second point, you can have designated classes to teach children how to keyboard, code or use software that don’t require them to have laptops in their hands throughout the school day. And considering that various tech companies are developing artificial intelligence that, we’re meant to understand, will upend work as we know it , whatever tech skills we’re currently teaching will probably be obsolete by the time students enter the work force anyway. By then, it’ll be too late to claw back the brain space of our nation’s children that we’ve already ceded. And for what? So today’s grade schoolers can be really, really good at making PowerPoint presentations like the ones they might one day make as white-collar adults?

That’s the part that I can’t shake: We’ve let tech companies and their products set the terms of the argument about what education should be, and too many people, myself included, didn’t initially realize it. Companies never had to prove that devices or software, broadly speaking, helped students learn before those devices had wormed their way into America’s public schools. And now the onus is on parents to marshal arguments about the detriments of tech in schools.

Holly Coleman, a parent of two who lives in Kansas and is a substitute teacher in her district, describes what students are losing:

They can type quickly but struggle to write legibly. They can find info about any topic on the internet but can’t discuss that topic using recall, creativity or critical thinking. They can make a beautiful PowerPoint or Keynote in 20 minutes but can’t write a three-page paper or hand-make a poster board. Their textbooks are all online, which is great for the seams on their backpack, but tangible pages under your fingers literally connect you to the material you’re reading and learning. These kids do not know how to move through their day without a device in their hand and under their fingertips. They never even get the chance to disconnect from their tech and reconnect with one another through eye contact and conversation.

Jonathan Haidt’s new book, “The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness,” prescribes phone-free schools as a way to remedy some of the challenges facing America’s children. I agree that there’s no place for smartphones on a K-12 campus. But if you take away the phones and the kids still have near-constant internet connectivity on devices they have with them in every class, the problem won’t go away.

When Covid hit and screens became the only way for millions of kids to “attend” school, not having a personal device became an equity issue. But we’re getting to a point where the opposite may be true. According to the responses to my questionnaire, during the remote-school era, private schools seemed to rely far less on screens than public schools, and many educators said that they deliberately chose lower-tech school environments for their own children — much the same way that some tech workers intentionally send their kids to screen-free schools.

We need to reframe the entire conversation around tech in schools because it’s far from clear that we’re getting the results we want as a society and because parents are in a defensive crouch, afraid to appear anti-progress or unwilling to prepare the next generation for the future. “I feel like a baby boomer attacking like this,” said Lewis.

But the drawbacks of constant screen time in schools go beyond data privacy, job security and whether a specific app increases math performance by a standard deviation. As Lewis put it, using tech in the classroom makes students “so passive, and it requires so little agency and initiative.” She added, “I’m very concerned about the species’ ability to survive and the ability to think critically and the importance of critical thinking outside of getting a job.”

If we don’t hit pause now and try to roll back some of the excesses, we’ll be doing our children — and society — a profound disservice.

The good news is that sometimes when the stakes become clear, educators respond: In May, Dr. Prater said, “we’re going to remove access to YouTube from our district devices for students.” He added that teachers will still be able to get access to YouTube if they want to show instructional videos. The district is also rethinking its phone policy to cut down on personal device use in the classroom. “For me,” he said, “it’s all about how do you find the common-sense approach, going forward, and match that up with good old-fashioned hands-on learning?” He knows technology can cause “a great deal of harm if we’re not careful.”
