Fine Arts Center:

The Fine Arts Center, South Carolina’s first public arts high school, provides a world-class arts education to students in Greenville County, SC.  An Arts Schools Network Exemplary School, the Fine Arts Center’s award-winning programs provide the highest level of artistic preparation to students in the areas of Architecture, Creative Writing, Dance, Digital Filmmaking, Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts.  Students at the Fine Arts Center are identified as artistically gifted and experience a rigorous, pre-professional arts education taught by teaching artists in an inclusive, collaborative learning community.  Class sizes are small so that students can get individualized attention in a focused environment.  Graduates go on to top colleges and universities in their arts field of study and regularly receive sizable scholarships.  The faculty of the Fine Arts Center are practicing professional teaching artists who are highly skilled in their craft and are capable of effectively passing their craft to highly motivated students.  

The FAC Creative Writing Program:

Artistically gifted and talented students are selected to attend by a process of application, teacher recommendation, transcript, and audition/portfolio review. Highly motivated students are placed into classes with an average of twelve to fifteen students. Students annually earn recognition in the Regional and National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.  Students have also been successful in the national YoungArts competition, earning both the Winner and Winner with Distinction awards. Creative Writing students attend class for two hours a day, in morning or afternoon periods, five days a week during a 190-day school year.  The students edit, design and publish the internationally recognized online journal Crashtest ( www.crashtestmag.com ), manage the Momentum Guest Artist Series featuring poets like Geoffrey Davis and Danez Smith, among others, and run the student-led Impact Reading Series. 

Qualifications:

  • MFA or MA in Creative Writing (Poetry, Fiction or Creative Nonfiction)
  • Ongoing record of publication in nationally recognized and independently edited journals and presses
  • Preferred 3 years of successful teaching experience with advanced level students
  • Ability to instruct in the three major genres: poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction
  • Optional, but preferred: experience in publication as an editor, genre editor, managing editor or reader

Major Responsibilities:

  • Teaching gifted and talented students (two classes per day) in a well-established creative writing program with a dynamic and varied curriculum that includes a significant workshop component and requires timely grading and response
  • Preparing student work for submission to the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, YoungArts; the Princeton Young Poets Award, and others over the course of the year
  • Preparing students for post-secondary study in creative writing
