One of the hardest things about public speaking is knowing how to start a speech. Your opening line is your first impression. It’s how you capture attention. It’s how you captivate the audience. So how do you make sure you nail it every time?

The best way to know how to open a speech is to look at what has worked in the past. When we examined the top speeches of all time and the most popular TED talks of all time, we found some interesting speaking patterns.

#1: Sir Ken Robinson – “Do schools kill creativity?” Opening Line: “Good morning. How are you? It’s been great, hasn’t it? I’ve been blown away by the whole thing. In fact, I’m leaving.”

#2: Amy Cuddy – “Your Body Language May Shape Who You Are” Opening Line: “So I want to start by offering you a free, no-tech life hack, and all it requires of you is this: that you change your posture for two minutes.”

#3: Simon Sinek – “How Great Leaders Inspire Action”

#4: Brene Brown – “The Power of Vulnerability” Opening Line: “So, I’ll start with this: a couple years ago, an event planner called me because I was going to do a speaking event.”

What can we learn from these opening lines? There are some patterns that can help us. First, let’s start with what you shouldn’t do. Have you ever made one of these cardinal speaking sins?

Never Start a Presentation with…

Anything technical! This is a big mistake people make when they have not done a tech check ahead of time or are feeling nervous. Never start with these openers:

  • Is this microphone working?
  • Can you hear me?
  • Wow, these lights are bright!

Your nervousness. Many people think it is vulnerable to start with how nervous they are about speaking — you can mention this later, but it should not be the first thing. Why? People will then only be looking for signs of your nervousness. Don’t start with:

  • I’m so nervous right now!
  • Wow there are so many people here.
  • I’m not a great public speaker.

A lackluster or non-believable nicety. It’s great to be grateful to the person who introduced you, but it’s not a great way to include the audience. It’s ok to thank the audience for being there—but do it at the end (not as your opening line). These are all too boring:

  • Thanks for having me.
  • Thanks for that intro.
  • Nice to be here.

Boring, shmoring! I have an exception here if you can make it funny. Ken Robinson started with a nicety and then turned it into a joke. He said, “ “Good morning. How are you? It’s been great, hasn’t it? I’ve been blown away by the whole thing. In fact, I’m leaving.”

How to Start a Presentation

A story. The absolute best way to start a presentation is with a story. There is nothing better to capture the imagination and attention of an audience. Try to use these speaking openers as fill-in-the-blanks for your speech.

  • I’m here for a reason. And it’s an interesting story…
  • The best thing that ever happened to me was…
  • Once upon a time…

In his talk, “The lies our culture tells us about what matters,” David Brooks started off with a great opening line AND a story. He said, “So, we all have bad seasons in life. And I had one in 2013. My marriage had just ended, and I was humiliated by that failed commitment.” Makes you want to watch right…

A BIG idea. Sometimes you want to share your big idea right up front. This can be helpful because it is intriguing and gets people clued in right away. All TED speakers try to integrate their big idea early.

  • You’re here for a reason. It’s…
  • The single most important thing I want to share with you today is…
  • Today, I want to share a big idea…

I love how Stacy Smith starts off her talk with her big idea framed in an interesting way. She said, “Today, I want to tell you about a pressing social issue. Now, it’s not nuclear arms, it’s not immigration, and it’s not malaria. I’m here to talk about movies.”

Special Note: Be very careful to NOT deliver your one-liner by re-reading your title slide. You also want to position it as exciting and intriguing. For example, don’t say, “Today I am going to talk about body language.” Instead say, “Today I am going to teach you the single most important thing you can do to improve your charisma… and it starts with your body.”

A quirky one-liner. If you can use humor — do it! Humor or curiosity is a great way to start a speech on a high. You can get creative with these! Think of an interesting fact about you, your audience or your topic that can lead you into your content.

  • One thing most people don’t know about me is…
  • A teacher, a mother and a duck walk into a bar…
  • I want to tell you something surprising.

When I gave my TEDx London Talk I started off with a quirky one-liner that immediately got a few laughs. It was “Hi, I’m Vanessa and I am a recovering awkward person.” It worked so well it is also the first line of my book, Captivate . 

II love the way Eve Ensler opens her speech with an interesting one-liner: “For a long time, there was me, and my body.”

This is a great tip from Conor Neill. He says that it is great to start with a question that the audience is asking themselves or would be very curious to know the answer to. This might be phrasing a pain point or worry for your audience.

  • Do you ever worry about…?
  • Have you ever wondered…?
  • You might have always thought…

Did you know…? Any interesting factoid or curiosity is bound to intrigue your audience. This is great if it leads into your content or a story. I like to start with did you know… Here are some that I use. You will have to fill in the blank for your audience:

  • Did you know that it takes less than a second to make a first impression ?
  • Did you know that your nonverbal communication is 12.5 times more powerful than your words ?
  • Did you know that we are lied to 200 times a day ?

Jamie Oliver does this amazingly in his TED Talk. He starts with this mind-blowing fact, “Sadly, in the next 18 minutes when I do our chat, four Americans that are alive will be dead through the food that they eat.”

Class presentations can be extremely stressful. The way you open your presentation will determine the way the rest of your presentation goes and how it is accepted by the audience. To make things easier for you, here is a list of powerful opening lines for a Class Presentation.

Before we get into the opening lines, here are some pointers to ensure your presentation has a good structure that will keep the audience engaged.

How to structure a good presentation

State the relevance and purpose to the audience, identify a core message, divide your presentation into three parts, use a simple and clear structure, use engaging and relevant slides, practice and rehearse your delivery, q & a session.

Determine the purpose of your presentation. What do you want your audience to learn or take away from it? Consider the knowledge level, interests, and expectations of your audience. This will help you tailor your content appropriately. Explain why the information is important or relevant to your audience

Identify a single central message that you would like to communicate to your audience. Then build your presentation around that core message. Select a clear and focused topic that aligns with the objectives of the assignment or class.

A presentation can be divided into three parts: an introduction detailing the purpose and structure of the talk; a body covering the main points; and a conclusion summarizing and highlighting the significance of your talk.

A good presentation structure means analyzing the core message of your presentation. Decide on a key message you want to impart to the audience, and then craft an engaging way of delivering it.

Design engaging and suitable slides that support your message and help your audience understand your presentation. Use rhetorical questions, anecdotes, or interactive elements to keep the audience engaged. Incorporate relevant visuals or multimedia to illustrate critical points. Ensure they are clear and legible, and add value to your presentation.

Practice your presentation beforehand to ensure that you can deliver it confidently and effectively.

Invite questions from the audience. Be prepared to respond thoughtfully.

Cite your sources if applicable. This adds credibility to your presentation. In fact, provide any recommended readings or resources for further exploration.

  • Closing Statement : Provide a clear and impactful closing statement.

Structuring a class presentation effectively involves careful planning and organization. By following these steps, you can create a well-structured class presentation that effectively delivers your message and engages your audience.

A visual description will help the audience to draw things from their imagination and will keep them engrossed in what you have to say after.

12. “Close your eyes for a moment and imagine [vivid scene related to your topic].”

Humor can never go wrong if you know the audience you are dealing with. A good laugh will always make your presentation go a lot smoother and easier.

13. “They say that [humorous twist on your topic]. But today, we’ll uncover the real story.”

Pick up a historical fact or reference that is quite common or that you can prove happened. This helps engage your audience and they would want to know how is that reference relevant in the context of your topic.

14. “In [specific time period], [relevant historical event] changed the course of [topic].”

Stating something and immediately countering your own statement will confuse the audience into listening to you more keenly. Which is why it serves the purpose of having your audience’s attention.

15. “While most people think [common misconception], the reality is quite different.”

Remember to choose an opening that aligns with your topic and style, and be sure to transition smoothly from your opening into the main content of your presentation. Additionally, practice your opening to ensure you deliver it confidently and engagingly.

Remember that statistics should be up-to-date and verifiable. When discussing recent stats from reliable sources, guarantee they resonate with the audience. For example:

  • “Did you know that according to Voiceplace, 90% of audiences value a presentation more when it starts with a compelling fact?”
  • “Consider this: Recent findings on Voiceplace show that attention spans are shorter than ever. Your opening needs to combat that trend effectively.”

Utilizing Effective Speech Techniques

Crafting an engaging speech involves the strategic use of visuals and an understanding of non-verbal cues. These elements can significantly enhance your delivery and engage your audience on a deeper level .

Incorporating Visuals and Demonstrations

Visual aids can transform your presentation from monotonous to captivating.

  • Use slides wisely: Do not overload your slides with text. Aim for high-quality images and concise bullet points.
  • Props and physical objects: Bringing a physical object related to your topic can serve as a powerful visual metaphor or illustrate a point clearly.

Your Introduction and Conclusion Need to Be Strong

The two concepts concerning why you need to start and end strongly, are  primacy  and  recency . Primacy states that people remember most vividly what they hear at the beginning of a speech. Recency  says those same people will strongly recall what you say at the end. In terms of public speaking, this translates into your introduction and conclusion. And you really do need to start early.   Here's  how to create an opening your audience will remember .

In more practical terms, there are three specific reasons why your introduction needs to be engaging and interesting immediately :

(1) Audiences make judgments about you and your message in the first minute. After that point, you'll be able to change those opinions about as easily as you can change a hamster into a ham sandwich. So here's  how to be strong in the first 60 seconds of your speech .

(2) Your opening sets the entire tone of your presentation (including whether you'll be interesting or not).

(3) This is when you introduce your message and tell the audience why they should listen.

Sound like a tall order? It isn't, if you use the seven key components of successful presentations . Your audience needs to be both fully engaged and predisposed favorably toward you and your message. Neither will happen unless you can  grab   their  attention,  so they're onboard when you spin your verbal magic. Keep reading to learn how that's done.

Using Creativity in Business Presentations

Achieving the objective of a 'grabbing' opening takes thought, a bit of imagination, and yes, a little creativity. The good news is that since you know your topic well and you're psyched up for the big game (it's an audience of decision-makers, remember?), you should be well positioned to succeed.

Primacy won't have much of a chance to operate, though, if you use what I call the 'Today, I'm going to talk about . . .' opening. This is boring! Be on the lookout instead for something that will pique the interest of your listeners, and perhaps surprise them. And here's something else you absolutely need to know: 20 ways to connect with an audience for lasting influence .

A few minutes of focused thinking should be all you need to know how to come up with an effective opening. And remember to avoid that I call introducing your introduction. That sounds like this: 'Let me start out with a story . . .', or, 'I heard a very funny joke the other day . . . ' Or even the inexplicable 'Before I begin . . . ' since you've already begun!

Just  tell  us the story, the joke, or the in-the-know reference that will delight your listeners. But if you signal your effect beforehand, you water down its potency and its power to surprise.

So how can you be completely focused and on your game?

12 Powerful Ways to Start a Speech or Presentation

As a springboard to launching your presentation with verve and originality, here are a dozen rhetorical devices you can use. Each of them is an effective 'speech hook that you can use to start any speech or presentation:

  • Startling statement
  • Personal anecdote or experience
  • Expert opinion
  • Sound effect
  • Physical object or demonstration
  • Testimony or success story

You could literally think of dozens more from your own experience or that of your audience. Remember, the best grabbers engage an audience immediately, both intellectually and emotionally. Interestingly, these same devices can be used to conclude in a way that keeps your audience thinking about what you said. It's all part of my six rules for effective public speaking .

Coming up with an exciting grabber and clincher involves some work on your part. But the rewards if you're successful more than justify the effort.

Famous Speech Openings  

How about a few examples? Here are four great openings that illustrate some of the grabbers listed above:

Jesus , Sermon on the Mount: "Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." — Startling statement.

Bill Clinton , 1993 speech in Memphis to ministers (after having heard himself introduced as "Bishop Clinton"): "You know, in the last ten months, I've been called a lot of things, but nobody's called me a bishop yet. When I was about nine years old, my beloved and now departed grandmother, who was a very wise woman, looked at me and she said, 'You know, I believe you could be a preacher if you were just a little better boy.'" — Humor

Jane Fonda in her TED Talk "Life's Third Act":  "There have been many revolutions over the last century, but perhaps none as significant as the longevity revolution. We are living on average today 34 years longer than our great-grandparents did. Think about that: that's an entire second adult lifetime that's been added to our lifespan." — Statistic.

Steve Jobs , 2005 Commencement Address at Stanford University: "Truth be told, I never graduated from college, and this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today, I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it, no big deal—just three stories. The first story is about connecting the dots. I dropped out of Reed College after the first six months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another eighteen months or so before I really quit. So why'd I drop out? It started before I was born." — Story, with a seamless transition into his speech.

Steve Jobs has been credited over the years with popularizing any number of other people’s inventions, from the personal computer to the tablet to the mobile phone. But none of these gifts may be as enduring as one of his rarely credited contributions to contemporary life — popularizing the viral commencement address.

On June 12, 2005, Jobs stood before the graduating class of Stanford University and reminded them that he had never graduated from college. “Truth be told, this is the closest I’ve ever gotten to a college graduation.” He then told three stories about his life. “That’s it. No big deal. Just three stories.”

That speech , coinciding as it did with the rise of internet virality (the first TED Talk would be posted on TED.com exactly 12 months later; the iPhone was introduced exactly 12 months after that), launched a global obsession with pithy, inspirational talks. Jobs’s speech has since been viewed more than 40 million times on YouTube.

Graduation speeches, long viewed as the burdensome interruption before diplomas were granted and mortar boards were tossed, have since become big business. Kurt Vonnegut, Ann Patchett, Carl Hiaasen, J.K. Rowling, Mary Karr, David Foster Wallace and many others have all had their commencement speeches published as books.

I’ve been fortunate to give a handful of commencement addresses over the years, and I confess to a fascination with the genre. The internet has been a boon this hobby. There are thousands of commencement speeches on the web. Can we learn anything from their messages?

I’ve spent the last few years gathering and coding hundreds of life stories, looking for patterns and takeaways that could help all of us live with more meaning, purpose and joy. I decided to put some of my coding tools to work, analyzing 100 of the most popular recent commencement speeches.

Here are the four tips they all contain:

1. Dream big

“I think it is often easier to make progress on mega-ambitious dreams. I know that sounds completely nuts. But, since no one else is crazy enough to do it, you have little competition. There are so few people this crazy that I feel like I know them all by first name. They all travel as if they are pack dogs and stick to each other like glue. The best people want to work the big challenges.” — Larry Page at University of Michigan , 2009

“We don’t beat the reaper by living longer. We beat the reaper by living well and living fully. For the reaper is always going to come for all of us. The question is: What do we do between the time we are born, and the time he shows up? Because when he shows up, it’s too late to do all the things that you’re always gonna, kinda get around to.” — Randy Pausch at Carnegie Mellon University , 2009

“Graduates, we need you. We need you to run companies and make decisions about who has access to capital. We need you to serve at the highest levels of government and determine our country’s standing in the world. We need you to work in our hospitals and in our courtrooms and in our schools. We need you to shape the future of technology. We need you because your perspective — the sum total of your intellect and your lived experience — will make our country stronger.” — Kamala Harris at Tennessee State University , 2022

2. Work hard

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.” — Steve Jobs at Stanford University , 2005

“I just directed my first film. I was completely unprepared, but my own ignorance to my own limitations looked like confidence and got me into the director’s chair. Once there, I had to figure it all out, and my belief that I could handle these things, contrary to all evidence of my ability to do so was half the battle. The other half was very hard work. The experience was the deepest and most meaningful one of my career.” — Natalie Portman at Harvard University , 2015

“When you’re doing the work you’re meant to do, it feels right and every day is a bonus, regardless of what you’re getting paid … But make it your life’s work to remake the world because there is nothing more beautiful or more worthwhile than working to leave something better for humanity.” — Oprah Winfrey at Stanford University , 2008

3. Make mistakes

”Fail big. That’s right. Fail big … It’s a new world out there, and it’s a mean world out there, and you only live once. So do what you feel passionate about. Take chances, professionally. Don’t be afraid to fail. There’s an old IQ test with nine dots, and you had to draw five lines with a pencil within these nine dots without lifting the pencil, and the only way to do it was to go outside the box. So don’t be afraid to go outside the box.” — Denzel Washington at University of Pennsylvania , 2011

“The world doesn’t care how many times you fall down, as long as it’s one fewer than the number of times you get back up.” — Aaron Sorkin at Syracuse University , 2013

“My experience has been that my mistakes led to the best thing in my life. Being embarrassed when you mess up is part of the human experience of getting back up dusting yourself off and seeing who still wants to hang out with you afterward and laugh about it. That’s a gift. The times I was told no or wasn’t included wasn’t chosen, didn’t win, didn’t make the cut, looking back it really feels like those moments we’re as important if not more crucial than the moments I was told yes.” — Taylor Swift at NYU , 2022

“Work hard, be kind, and amazing things will happen.” — Conan O’Brien at Dartmouth College , 2011

“Empathy and kindness are the true signs of emotional intelligence.” — Will Ferrell at the University of Southern California , 2017

“So here’s something I know to be true, although it’s a little corny, and I don’t quite know what to do with it: What I regret most in my life are failures of kindness. Those moments when another human being was there, in front of me, suffering, and I responded … sensibly. Reservedly. Mildly. Or, to look at it from the other end of the telescope: Who, in your life, do you remember most fondly, with the most undeniable feelings of warmth? Those who were kindest to you, I bet. It’s a little facile, maybe, and certainly hard to implement, but I’d say, as a goal in life, you could do worse than: Try to be kinder.” — George Saunders at Syracuse University , 2013

So what can we learn from these themes?

Every era in American life has its own standards of what it means to be a success. Shortly after America’s founding, success was all about character. Led by Benjamin Franklin, Americans embraced virtue, industry, and frugality. In the twentieth century, success was all about personality. Led by Dale Carnegie, Americans embraced salesmanship, reinvention and charisma. Today, led by Steve Jobs, Americans are embracing meaning, authenticity and bliss. Or, as Kermit the Frog put it in a 1996 commencement speech at Southampton College , “May success and a smile always be yours … even when you’re knee-deep in the sticky muck of life.”

Dream, work, fail and smile are as good a foursome of American identity today as I know. And if those ideas don’t inspire you, you can always embrace the far more practical advice erroneously attributed to Kurt Vonnegut in a commencement speech that he never gave at MIT, but was instead delivered by Chicago Tribune columnist Mary Schmich in an imaginary speech to graduates she published in an old-fashioned newspaper, “Ladies and gentlemen of the class of ’97: Wear sunscreen.”

Public speaking can *really* hard. It can be especially difficult if you struggle with social anxiety or if you are a student who doesn't have a lot of experience talking in front of groups. Research suggests that 61% of university students in the U.S. fear public speaking. Fortunately, many strategies can help you build your confidence and strengthen your public speaking skills.

Public speaking tips for students aim to reduce anxiety that can interfere with giving presentations or speeches in class. These tips can also be helpful for those with social anxiety disorder (SAD)  who have difficulty speaking in front of a group or telling a story among friends.

At a Glance

If you have social anxiety and need to give a speech  in elementary school, high school, college, or university, it helps to be as prepared as possible . Beyond preparation, however, there are strategies that you can use to reduce anxiety and fight the urge to stay home with a fake illness.

Practice, preparation, and relaxation strategies are essential for students who are dealing with anxiety about public speaking. It's also important to maintain perspective; remember, other people get nervous, too! As you practice, you'll start to feel more confident about talking in front of groups, which will help you present your best self with a lot less anxiety.

Practice Makes Perfect

Even great speakers practice their speeches beforehand. Practice out loud with a recording device or video camera, and then watch yourself to see how you can improve. If you are feeling brave, practice in front of a friend or family member and ask for feedback.

Research has even shown that imaginary practice can be an effective way to combat feelings of public speaking anxiety.

Talk About What You Know

If possible, choose a topic for your speech or presentation that you know a lot about and love. The audience will feel your passion for the topic, and you will feel less anxious knowing that you have a lot of experience to draw from when other students ask you questions.

Concentrate on Your Message

When you focus on the task at hand, anxiety is less likely to get out of control. Concentrate on the main message of your speech or presentation and make it your goal to deliver that message to the other students in your class.

Grab the Audience's Attention

Most of your fellow classmates will pay attention for at least the first 20 seconds; grab their attention during those early moments. Start with an interesting fact or a story that relates to your topic.

Have One Main Message

Focus on one central theme, and your classmates will learn more. Tie different parts of your talk to the main theme to support your overall message. Trying to cover too much ground can leave other students feeling overwhelmed.

Tell Stories

Stories catch the attention of other students and deliver a message in a more meaningful way than facts and figures. Whenever possible, use a story to illustrate a point in your talk.

Preparation Can Reduce Anxiety

Being prepared to speak in public can also be important if you have social anxiety disorder. Feeling confident and prepared to give your speech may help lessen your feelings of anxiety. Some of the things that you can do to prepare include:

Visit the Room

If you have access to the classroom where you will be speaking outside of class hours, take the time to visit in advance and get used to standing at the front of the room. Make arrangements for any audio-visual equipment and practice standing in the exact spot where you will deliver your speech.

Rack Up Experience

Volunteer to speak in front of your class as often as possible. Be the first one to raise your hand when a question is asked. Your confidence will grow with every public speaking experience.

Researchers have found that practicing in a virtual format can also be helpful. You might try out virtual experiences that allow you to practice in front of a supportive audience or invite friends and family to watch you practice your presentation in person or through video conferencing.

Observe Other Speakers

Take the time to watch other speakers who are good at what they do. Practice imitating their style and confidence. Consider attending local events or presentations at your school. Watching TED Talks or speeches on YouTube can also be helpful.

Visualize Confidence

Visualize yourself confidently delivering your speech, feeling free of anxiety, and engaging the students in your class. Although this may seem like a stretch for you now, visualization is a powerful tool for changing the way you feel.

Elite athletes use this strategy to improve their performance in competitions, and research has shown that it can be a helpful tool for combatting speech anxiety. Other relaxation strategies that can help include deep breathing and positive self-talk .

Find a Friendly Face

If you are feeling anxious, find one of your friends in class (or someone who seems friendly) and imagine that you are speaking only to that person.

Remember that other students are on your side. Think about a time when you have been an audience member and the student delivering the speech or presentation was noticeably nervous. Did you think less of that student? More likely, you felt sympathetic and wanted to make that person more comfortable by smiling or nodding.

Remember—other students generally want you to succeed and feel comfortable. If, for some reason, the audience is not on your side or you experience  bullying  or social exclusion, be sure to discuss this with a parent, teacher, or guidance counselor.

Sometimes just knowing what makes a good speech can help you feel more confident. Focus on some of the following elements and practice them before you have to speak in public.

Develop Your Own Style

In addition to imitating good speakers, work on developing your own personal style as a public speaker. Integrate your own personality into your speaking style and you will feel more comfortable in front of the class. Telling personal stories that tie into your theme are a great way to let other students get to know you better.

Avoid Filler Words

Words such as "basically," "well," and "um" don't add anything to your speech. Practice being silent when you feel the urge to use one of these words.

Vary Your Tone, Volume, and Speed

Interesting speakers vary the pitch (high versus low), volume (loud versus soft), and speed (fast versus slow) of their words. Doing so keeps your classmates interested and engaged in what you say.

Make the Audience Laugh

Laughter is a great way to relax both you and the other students in your class, and telling jokes can be a great icebreaker at the beginning of a speech. Practice the timing and delivery of your jokes beforehand and ask a friend for feedback. Be sure that they are appropriate for your class before you begin.

If all else fails, smile. Your fellow classmates will perceive you like a warm speaker and be more receptive to what you have to say.

Don't Apologize

If you make a mistake, don't offer apologies. Chances are that your classmates didn't notice anyway. Unless you need to correct a fact or figure, there is no point dwelling on errors that probably only you noticed.

If you make a mistake because your hands or shaking, or something similar, try to make light of the situation by saying something like, "I wasn't this nervous when I woke up this morning!" This can help to break the tension of the moment.

It's natural to feel frightened the first time you have to speak in front of your class. However, if you fear continues, interferes with your daily life and keeps you awake at night, it may be helpful to see someone about your anxiety.

Try talking to a parent, teacher, or counselor about how you have been feeling. If that doesn't get you anywhere, ask to make an appointment with your doctor. Severe public speaking anxiety is a true disorder that can improve with treatment .

If you’re going to make it in the professional world, most likely you’ll have to give a presentation in English at some point. No reason to get nervous!

Most of the work involved lies in the introduction. You may or may not need an English presentation PPT file, your topic, audience, or time limit may vary, but a strong opening is a must no matter what! Everything that follows can build from the opening outline you present to your audience.

Let’s look at some guidelines for starting a presentation in English. If you can master this part, you’ll never have to worry about the rest!

Opening in a Presentation in English

While it’s important to have your entire presentation organized and outlined, planning and organization are especially important in the introduction. This is what will guide you through a clear and concise beginning. Let’s look at how to start a presentation with well-organized thoughts .

Introduction Outline

  • Introduce yourself and welcome everyone.
  • State the purpose of your presentation
  • Give a short overview of the presentation

As we say, it’s as easy as 1-2-3. (No need for a more detailed English presentation script!) Let’s examine the first step.

1. Introduce Yourself & Welcome Everyone

The self-introduction is your opportunity to make a good first impression. Be sure to open with a warm welcome and use language that is familiar and natural. Based on your audience, there are a few different expressions you can use to start your presentation.

If you’re presenting to coworkers who may already know you:

  • Hello, [name] here. I would like to thank you all for your time. As you may know, I [describe what you do/your job title] I look forward to discussing [topic] today.
  • Good morning/afternoon/evening everyone. Thank you for being here. For those who don’t know me, my name is [name], and for those who know me, hello again.

If you’re presenting to people you’ve never met:

  • Hello everyone, it’s nice to meet you all. My name is [name] and I am the [job/title].
  • Hello. Welcome to [event]. My name is [name] and I am the [job/title]. I’m glad you’re all here.

There are certainly more ways to make an introduction. However, it’s generally best to follow this format:

  • Start with a polite welcome and state your name.
  • Follow with your job title and/or the reason you’re qualified to speak on the topic being discussed.

2. State the Purpose of Your Presentation

Now that your audience knows who you are and your qualifications, you can state the purpose of your presentation. This is where you clarify to your audience what you’ll be talking about.

So, ask yourself, “ What do I want my audience to get from this presentation? ”

  • Do you want your audience to be informed?
  • Do you need something from your audience?
  • Do you want them to purchase a product?
  • Do you want them to do something for the community or your company?

With your goal in mind, you can create the next couple of lines of your presentation. Below are some examples of how to start.

  • Let me share with you…
  • I’d like to introduce you to [product or service]
  • Today I want to discuss…
  • I want to breakdown for you [topic]
  • Let’s discuss…
  • Today I will present the results of my research on [topic]
  • By the end of this presentation, you’ll understand [topic]
  • My goal is to explain…
  • As you know, we’ll be talking about…

When talking about the purpose of your presentation, stick to your goals. You purpose statement should be only one to three sentences. That way, you can give your audience a clear sense of purpose that sets them up for the rest of the presentation.

3. A Short Overview of the Presentation

The final step in starting your presentation is to give a short outline of what you’ll be presenting. People like a map of what to expect from a presentation.

It helps them organize their thoughts and gives a sense of order. Also, it lets the audience know why they’re listening to you. This is what you’ll use to grab their attention, and help them stay focused throughout the presentation.

Here are some examples of how you can outline your presentation:

  • Today, I’m going to cover… Then we’ll talk about… Lastly, I’ll close on…
  • We’re going to be covering some key information you need to know, including…
  • My aim with this presentation is to get you to… To do that we’ll be talking about…
  • I’ve divided my presentation into [number] sections… [List the sections]
  • Over the next [length of your presentation] I’m going to discuss…

That’s it! It’s as simple as 1-2-3. If you have a fear of public speaking or are not confident about presenting to a group of people, follow these three steps. It’s a simple structure that can get you off to a good start. With that in mind, there are other ways to bring your introduction to the next level too! For a Strong Presentation in English, Engage your Audience

Presentations aren’t everyone’s strongest ability, and that’s OK. If you’re newer to presenting in English, the steps above are the basics to getting started. Once you’re more comfortable with presenting, though, you can go a step further with some extra tricks that can really wow your audience.

Mastering the skill of engaging an audience will take experience. Fortunately, there are many famous speakers out there you can model for capturing attention. Also, there are some common techniques that English-speakers use to gain an audience’s attention.

*How and when you use these techniques in your introduction is at your discretion, as long as you cover the 3 steps of the introduction outline that we discussed earlier.*

Do or say something shocking.

The purpose of shocking your audience is to immediately engage them. You can make a loud noise and somehow relate the noise to your presentation. Or, you can say, “ Did you know that… ” and follow with a shocking story or statistic. Either way, the objective is to create surprise to draw their attention.

Tell a story

Telling a story related to your presentation is a great way to get the audience listening to you.

You can start by saying, “ On my way to [location] the other day… ” or “ On my way here, I was reminded of… ” and then follow with a story. A good story can make your presentation memorable.

Ask your audience to take part

Sometimes a good introduction that captures attention will involve asking for help from the audience. You can ask the audience to play a quick game or solve a puzzle that’s related to your presentation. Also, you could engage the audience with a group exercise. This is a great way to get people involved in your presentation.

There are many more ways to engage the audience, so get creative and see what you can think up! Here are some resources that will help you get started.

Being a member of the student council can help you help your school. However, it takes hard work to get into the student council . You need to craft a good speech that gives your classmates incentives to vote for you.

Use a strong, attention-grabbing opening. Discuss your qualifications briefly, then move on. Focus your speech on your passion and present a blueprint to achieve your goals. Close with a strong summary and call to vote for you.

Writing the Introduction

Step 1 Find an attention-grabbing opening statement.

  • Do not merely start by saying, "My name is ___ and I'm running for student council." Your classmates will already know as much and this is not really a unique statement. There will be time to state the basic information after you've got the class's attention. [1] X Research source
  • You can open with a question. Something like, "If there was one thing you could change about this school, what would it be?" Or a question that adds some humor , like, "I know what you're thinking. Why should I listen to this person?" and then proceed to lay out your credentials. Quotes on leadership, power, and guidance would also make good openings. However, make sure to double-check your sources and especially if you're finding quotes online. Many online quote databases, like Quote Garden or Brainy Quote, sometimes attribute quotes to the wrong sources. [2] X Research source
  • If you're stuck, look up and read famous speeches. You can find many speeches from presidents, world leaders, civil rights activists, and others online. Pay attention to how they opened their speeches and ask yourself, "Was this interesting? Do I want to keep reading/listening? Why?" [3] X Research source

Step 2 State the basics.

  • State your name and grade in school. This may feel somewhat unnecessary if you go to a small school, but it's considered a formality. If you're missing this part of the speech, you may end up looking sloppy in comparison to other students. [5] X Research source
  • State what you want. That is, what you're running for. Do you want to be the president , vice president , treasurer, secretary? Even if you think most students are aware of what position you're running for, make sure you state it here to remind them. [6] X Research source
  • Try to keep this section brief as it's not as important as your qualifications and plans to improve the school . Even one sentence would suffice. For example, "My name is Ramona Hart, I'm in the 11th grade, and I'm running for treasurer of the student council."

Step 3 List your qualifications.

  • Any accomplishments relevant to the position warrant mentioning here. If you're running for secretary, for example, talk about your summer job filing papers in your uncle's law firm. If you're running for student council president, talk about your leadership experience being captain of the swim team. [7] X Research source
  • While this section is important, try to keep it minimal. A couple of sentences laying out your qualifications is enough as the body of your speech is where you should spend the most time. For example, let's go back to the above example. From there, we could say, "I am currently enrolled in advanced placement algebra and I have been an honor roll student for three years. This knowledge of numbers and diligence qualifies me to have responsibility for finances for our student council." [8] X Research source

Writing the Body of the Speech

Step 1 State your main ideas on how to improve the school.

  • You should list your ideas and then expand on them later in the body. It might take a bit of research to figure out what you want to change. Ask around the school, talking to students and teachers, and see where there's room for improvement. What are the concerns of the students? What are people happy with regarding the school? What would they like to see change? Asking these questions can help you get a sense of your audience and community.
  • Remember, you should not make promises you cannot keep. Do not say anything just to get elected. While many students might want gum-chewing policies eliminated or for the lunch period to run twice as long, this is probably not necessary or possible. Try to focus on areas that seem important to keep your school running safely and efficiently. Concerns about things like bullying , academic standards, and extracurricular activities should be your concern over fun and games. [10] X Research source
  • A good opening statement for your body would state the causes important to you and what you plan to do about them. For example, if you were running for president, you could say something like, "I understand we need to improve how we handle bullying, increase interest in extracurricular activities, and expand access to AP courses throughout the school. As your president, I would work to bring in speakers to talk about sensitivity in the classroom, increase advertising for basketball games and quiz bowl tournaments, and start a tutoring program to help students struggling with certain subjects." Step 2 Find support for those ideas.

  • Using the school library or computers, figure out the best means to tackle certain problems many schools face. How have other schools dealt with bullying? Poor test scores? Low interest in extracurricular activities? What can you reasonably do as a student council member to address these problems? [12] X Research source
  • You do not have to have a point-by-point plan laid out, but a few sentences on some preliminary ideas can help you stand out from your peers. People are more inclined to vote for someone who's thought about how to solve problems in addition to identifying problems. [13] X Research source

Step 3 Keep your ideas short but very strongly worded.

Ending with a Strong Conclusion

Step 1 Reiterate your main points briefly.

  • Do summarize, briefly, your qualifications but do not put the main focus on them. This is where you should sincerely state your passion. Students should not just vote for you because you'd do a good job but because you genuinely care about the school. State your passion for your community and how much you want to see other students succeed. Lots of students have high qualifications. You can set yourself apart by being a candidate who really cares.   • Use an autobiographical narrative If you plan to use this structure for your graduation speech examples, it means that you want to open up and share more details about your life to your audience. It’s sort of like a mini-memoir wherein the audience learns a lot about the experiences you’ve had in your personal life. As you share these experiences, you also share a lot of life lessons with them. Although you don’t give advice directly at the beginning of your speech, you would incorporate these little bits of advice throughout your speech. Talk about your own experiences after graduation, how you dealt with the real world, and how you overcame different kinds of challenges.
  • Use the main theme and some personal references Finally, you can also structure your speech in such a way that you’re leading up to one main theme or point. A lot of people find this structure to be extremely difficult to put together because they feel like it’s too limited. Whether you’re representing the graduation class or you’re asked to come and give a speech to the graduating class, you have to come up with your own graduation speech. The good news is that there are a lot of graduation speech examples which you can use as a reference.

Writing a graduation speech doesn’t have to be a difficult task. As long as you have an idea of what to write and you know what you want to say to the graduating class, the words will start flowing from your mind. But if you need some help, here are some tips to guide you:

  • Brainstorming Any great speech starts with a brainstorming session. You can begin by asking yourself what you want to write in your speech. If you’re the representative of the graduating class, then think about all of the learning and experiences you’ve gained throughout your education. If they asked you to speak for the graduating class, then think about the advice you want to share to them in order to inspire them and somehow prepare them for what’s to come. Brainstorming involves a lot of thought, especially about the future. There’s nothing wrong with talking about the past and the present but since you’ll speak to a graduating class, talking about the future is much more relevant. As you think about the things to say, write everything down on a piece of paper. Later on, you can review your ideas to see which ones to keep and which ones to remove from your speech.
  • Choosing a theme After your brainstorming session, you’d have a lot of ideas, stories, and advice to share to your audience. Now it’s time to begin shaping all of these into one coherent speech. To do this, you may want to think about the theme to focus on for your speech. Whether you want to choose a single theme or a collection of themes which you will link with one another, this step makes speech writing easier. Also, having a theme makes the speech more memorable and impactful to the audience. With a theme, you’ll also be able to sort through the things you’ve written down more effectively only choosing the ones which relate to your theme.

Here are some steps to help you out: Make sure that your introductory statement grabs the attention of your audience right away. In other words, get the audience “hooked” from the beginning so they will feel compelled to listen to your entire speech. Illustrate the theme you’ve chosen by telling stories. Keep in mind that the best stories always have a beginning with a challenge or obstacle, a middle where you share how you overcame it, and an end where you discussed how this experience helped you grow. For the end of your speech, tie together all of the points you’ve discussed throughout your speech. Also, make it clear how your message applies to your audience. You may also share valuable advice to your audience in the conclusion of your speech.
  • Practicing your delivery Even after you’ve written your speech, the work doesn’t end there. You also have to deliver it to the graduating class. For a lot of people, this part is a lot more intimidating, especially for those who aren’t used to speaking in front of an audience. Here are some pointers for you: If you’ve created a short graduation speech, you may want to try memorizing it. This helps you focus on your delivery to make it more personable. Don’t speak too fast even when you’re feeling nervous. Try practicing in front of friends and family so you can learn how to consciously slow down your speaking rate. Once in a while, pause during the delivery of your speech. You can either pause to emphasize your point or to give the audience some time to consider what you’ve said. An anchor should always start a program with a quote, a poem or some famous saying so that he or she is able to capture the attention of the audience. For college functions, quotes on the topic of education, teachers, students, art, creativity or having fun, can be a good start. 

Some interesting quotes that you can use are listed here:

  • “The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge, but imagination.” – Albert Einstein 
  • “The mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be ignited.” – Plutarch
  • “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.” – Zig Ziglar

Choosing a quote that goes well with the nature of the event and following it up with a good welcome speech is important. 

A welcome speech for a college function can be something like this:

“Hello and a warm good morning/ good afternoon/ good evening to all! Today/ tonight is the day/ night for which we all have been eagerly waiting for months, for which our students and organisers have worked tirelessly for weeks.

The moment has finally arrived. I am [your name] , your host for today/ tonight and I heartily welcome you all to the annual cultural festival of [college name] . We are really honoured to have our respected principal, Mr/Ms [name], chief guests, Mr/Ms [names] , revered teachers, dear parents and of course, our lovely students among us. We are very glad to have you all with us today/ tonight and I welcome you all on the behalf of [college name] to enjoy the event.”

Most school and college functions start with a lamp lighting ceremony. If so is the case with your college, this is how you can invite the principal and chief guests on the stage to light the lamps:

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” – Martin Luther King Jr

“Now, I would like to call on the stage our respected principal Mr/ Ms [name] as well as our chief guests Mr/ Ms [names] for the lamp lighting ceremony. Please give them a huge round of applause.”

Once the lamps are lit, the next step is to honour the chief guests. 

“Now I would like to request our Principal sir/ ma’am to honour our chief guests with the bouquets and mementoes. We thank you for gracing us with your presence.”

“- Thank you, sir/ ma’am. I would now request you all to please take your seats. Thank you. Let’s give them a huge round of applause.”

Calling the Principal for a Welcome Speech

“Education can truly change the world. Without education and dedicated teachers, it would not have been possible for us as a society to come this far. We, the students of [college name], are so blessed and grateful to have such wonderful teachers among us who happily guide us at every step. It is our teachers who have made us capable and responsible.

Our hearts hold so much gratitude for all our teachers. So, on this special occasion, how can we let go of the opportunity to hear words of wisdom from our respected Principal Sir/ Ma’am. Now, I would like to invite our Principal, Mr/Ms [name], to come on the stage, say a few words and enlighten us. Please give him/ her a huge round of applause.”

After the speech

“Thank you so much, sir/ ma’am. That was indeed motivating and I am sure all the students present here agree. We are honoured and privileged to have you among us. Thank you. Please take your seat.”

“Now, our students of [course, year] will present the first act of the evening, a classical Kathak dance performance. Kathak originated in North India and the dance form was used to portray epic tales from Ramayana, Mahabharata as well as other Hindu scriptures. It has now evolved into a brilliant dance form full of technique and grace. Our students today are not only going to show you the traditional side of Kathak but also the more modern, fusion side of it. Let’s welcome them on the stage and present their performance.”

After the first performance

“Wow! What a beautiful performance! Indeed graceful and brilliant. They indeed deserve a huge round of applause! 

Now, it is time for the next performance which I guarantee, is going to be equally mesmerising. Our musically-talented students are now going to present an intriguing musical stage. The story of Romeo and Juliet, but with a twist. Let us welcome them with a round of applause.”

After the performance

“That was truly ethereal. We are so proud of you all! Let’s give these talented young people a huge round of applause. They deserve it. Thank you for such an amazing performance.”

“The famous Irish poet, Oscar Wilde, once said – I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being. Indeed, dramas and plays can help us connect with the audience and get the message across in ways that plain conversations are unable to. And so, I believe that our next act of the event by the members of our drama club will also be successful in getting its message across. Let’s put our hands together and welcome the performers on the stage!”

The anchor can similarly welcome different acts on the stage and carry on with the show.

Each of these graduation speeches has a slightly different purpose, but all of them need to be inspirational and funny.

How to Write a Commencement Speech

The commencement speech is often the keynote speech of the graduation ceremony. This presentation should be uplifting and entertaining, but this graduation speech should also teach a life lesson to the graduating students. If you do a search on YouTube of the best graduation speeches, many of these speakers will be famous comedians. When a comedian delivers a commencement speech, and the speech is posted on YouTube, it will always get a ton of views. The humor alone will make people want to watch the video. Three of the most popular of these speeches are by Conan O’Brien, Will Ferrell, and Ellen DeGeneres. The interesting thing about the speeches from these famous comedians is that, yes, they are funny, but the inspiration comes from what they learned from their failures.

Instead, just play the video in your head of what happened and describe the incident to the graduates.

For a great example of this, watch the YouTube video on Stanford University’s channel where Steve Jobs gives the commencement speech. I love this speech, because Jobs skips the introduction and the funny stuff and starts his speech with the following. “I’m going to tell you three stories.” It’s simple, and the crowd loves him.

End with an Inspirational Call to Action.

How to end a graduation speech

So as you go on to the next stage in your life and you experience failure… because you will experience failure, use that as a stepping stone to your next success. Persevere. Don’t rest on that success. Use it as a stepping stone to your next success. Persevere, and you will experience a series of successes and failures that will allow you to accomplish something great!”

Use this outline to create a simple 20 to 30 minute speech. (The shorter the better… No one gets a diploma until you finish.)

Speech and debate is a life-changing activity that should be available for all students, but sometimes you need help making the case. NSDA membership is school-based. Whether you’re hoping to establish a class or an after-school program, getting the support of administrators is key. This guide contains resources to help adults advocate for a new program. We encourage students to utilize this in-depth guide to starting a program .

Determine your audience

Begin by determining the target audience of your pitch. Just like in speech and debate, knowing who the judge is in the back of the room will help you tailor your performance to win the ballot. You will definitely want to involve an administrator, possibly also an activities director. If you’re pitching a class, also consider including curriculum leaders. Reach out to front office staff to collect contact info if you aren’t familiar with school leadership. They also likely can provide guidance on the process for starting a team or class at the school.

Line up your partners 

Consider who from the community can help persuade decision makers. Parent and student interest drive programming. Explore involving students or parents in the pitch, be that via testimonials, surveys about their interest, or by inviting them to speak in person. 

If other schools in the area have programs, inquire if their admin would be willing to advocate on your behalf, or whether their students might give a quick performance at your meeting to showcase the skills your students could learn. Connecting to Your School’s Goals Every school has a set of goals or priorities. If you’re not able to determine those through your school directly, look to the district at large. Take those goals and analyze how speech and debate fits in. Then include this information in your pitch to your administration so it’s clear how offering speech and debate benefits the school at large. The following goals are sourced from a real school and examined through the speech and debate lens.

School Goal: Analysis every day, in every class.

Speech and debate achieves this by: 

  • Requiring debate students and public speakers to analyze sources of evidence to examine their credibility, possible biases, methodology, recency, and relevance. 
  • Training speech students to critically read literature to identify theme, character motivations, and arguments to bring characters to life. 
  • Encouraging students to review their ballot feedback from in-class competition or tournaments to evaluate where they should focus their efforts to improve results.

School Goal: Increase the sense of belonging students feel at school. 

  • Offering students a welcoming platform to express their opinions, passions, and lived experiences. 
  • Giving students the opportunity to collaborate and express their creativity, whether they work individually or in pairs.

  • Holding students to a national Code of Honor, which celebrates humility, equity, integrity, respect, leadership, and service. 
  • Training students to challenge their beliefs when presented with new information and approach issues from multiple diverse perspectives. 
  • Encouraging students to both share their own lived experiences and appreciate how their viewpoint can change when they listen to others with an open mind.

Let admins know there is an existing local and national infrastructure of support. By joining the NSDA, schools gain access to educational resources, competitive opportunities, and support from experts. We can train anyone to coach, from grandparents to math teachers. No existing knowledge of speech and debate is required.

Know Your Rights: Free Speech at Colleges and Universities

Both the California Constitution and the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution offer strong free speech protections—even for speech that is unpopular, controversial, political, or deeply offensive. These constitutional provisions prohibit officials at public colleges and universities from establishing or enforcing disciplinary rules that punish protected expression. But there are some limits. Know the Facts

Free speech is a constitutional right, overview of your rights, where you speak matters, applying time, place, and manner rules , inside and outside the classroom , not all speech is protected , discrimination and harassment on campus , speech versus conduct, restricting protests, what about counterprotests , when can a school take action at a protest , what forms of school discipline could i face .

Both the California Constitution and the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution offer strong free speech protections—even for speech that is unpopular, controversial, political, or deeply offensive. These constitutional provisions prohibit officials at public colleges and universities from establishing or enforcing disciplinary rules that punish protected expression.

But there are some limits.

On campus, you have the right to engage in protected speech. This means you can wear expressive clothing, hand out flyers, collect signatures for petitions, campaign to effect change, and come together for protests, so long as:

  • you are expressing yourself in a public area on campus;
  • your expression doesn’t substantially disrupt classes or the school’s other essential functions; and
  • your expression complies with “time, place, and manner” rules that your school has established.

You also have the right to a learning environment that is free from unlawful harassment.

Speech is more, or less, protected depending on where you seek to express yourself. In general, the more public an area, the better the reason the school needs to restrict your right to speak, assemble, or protest. And in almost no circumstance can a school restrict your speech merely because it doesn’t like your viewpoint.

Courts analyze whether a speech restriction is lawful using a place-based framework that begins with determining if you are in (1) a traditional public forum, (2) a limited public forum, or (3) a nonpublic forum.

TRADITIONAL PUBLIC FORUM:

A space that has traditionally been open for public speech activities—like a park, plaza, or sidewalk. A school can restrict speech only if the restriction is tied to a significant governmental interest and not based on the speech’s content. Any restriction must be “reasonable” as to “time, place, and manner,” and a school must still leave open good alternatives at different times or places for protected speech.

  • Example : Depending on its reasons, a school could probably require that all demonstrations in a campus quad take place between the hours of 8am and 10pm. It could also say that you aren’t allowed to block building entrances because of safety or demonstrate using amplified sound near where classes are in session. And a school could likely prevent students in dorms from hanging displays in their windows (but it couldn’t only prohibit hanging Confederate or pride flags because that would be a content- and viewpoint-based restriction).

LIMITED PUBLIC FORUM:

A space where the government (or, here, a school) chooses to allow speech for certain groups or subjects. In such a space, officials are allowed to restrict speech based on content or subject matter, but not on the basis of viewpoint.

  • Example : A school could make a bulletin board available for advertising campus events (but prohibit signage about other matters) or it could let registered student groups borrow a room in an administrative building (but decline to let others in the community borrow it).

NONPUBLIC FORUM:

A space that is not typically available for public expression—even if it is school property or owned by the government. Speech restrictions need only be viewpoint-neutral and reasonable given how the space is intended to be used. 

  • Example : A school could prohibit affixing posters to building walls not designated for expressive activity, could prescribe that only school-affiliated groups are allowed to use the internal school mail system, and could punish students for demonstrating in a private office where the public is not typically invited.

California colleges and universities are allowed, within reason, to pass content-neutral rules about when, where, and how you protest. They can, for example, ban overnight camping on campus and reasonably limit protests to certain areas at certain times of day.

Schools can also require permits for large, pre-planned assemblies as a way of managing competing demands on shared public spaces. (No permit should be required if you’re protesting by yourself or in a small group that is not too disruptive of a school event.) Whatever the rules are, they must be applied equally to everyone and must leave open meaningful alternative channels to free expression. Context matters in determining what is reasonable or unreasonable.

Inside the classroom, speech can be constrained to topics relevant to a class’s stated scope and subject to rules promoting civil dialogue and learning. Faculty must satisfy scholarly norms and meet teaching excellence standards. But outside the classroom, including on social media, courts have said that First Amendment freedoms need “breathing space” to survive.

With respect to student groups, a school can require that all student organizations—as a condition for recognition and receipt of school funding—be open to all students.

Certain narrowly defined categories of speech fall outside constitutional protections. Speech that constitutes obscenity, defamation, or harassment is unprotected. So is speech that is intended to incite imminent violence and lawless action, or speech that conveys a true threat of violence. The “true threats” analysis focuses on protecting a person from fear of physical harm, but not necessarily from emotional distress. A school must give equal treatment to the speech that falls in the same unprotected category. Officials could punish defamation, for instance, but they could not only punish defamation of school officials.

Under federal anti-discrimination statutes, such as Title VI of the Civil Rights Act and Title IX of the Education Amendments Act, all colleges and universities receiving federal funds must address discrimination that involves a “protected characteristic,” such as a person’s race, national origin, religion, sex, age, or disability. It can be challenging for school officials to balance anti-discrimination obligations with constitutional free speech guarantees.

To be considered unlawful conduct, the discriminatory harassment must include something beyond the expression of offensive views, words, or symbols. The U.S. Supreme Court established this test for when speech crosses the line: The disputed act must be (1) unwelcome; (2) discriminatory on the basis of a protected characteristic; (3) specifically targeted at an individual or a group of individuals bearing that characteristic; and (4) “so severe, pervasive, and objectively offensive” that it “undermines and detracts from the victim’s educational experience.”

Courts analyze whether the targeted students are effectively being denied “equal access to an institution’s resources and opportunities.” A university or college is liable for student-on-student harassment only if it is “deliberately indifferent” to the harassment allegedly taking place.

Free speech laws generally protect speech, not conduct. There is no First Amendment right, for example, to spray graffiti on a public building or to destroy someone else’s property, even if the act is done to communicate a message. Nor do free speech protections readily shield encampments or protests that substantially disrupt classes or other events like graduation ceremonies and Board of Regents meetings.

Physically intimidating students by blocking their movements or by pursuing them aggressively is definitively not expressive speech.

College and university officials have legal obligations to combat discrimination and a responsibility to maintain order. But this authority can’t be used to curtail free speech rights on campus or shut down a protest just because an official doesn’t like what you’re saying.

In fashioning responses to campus activism, schools must not single out particular viewpoints for censorship, discipline, or disproportionate punishment. Campus officials and law enforcement generally may not:

  • prohibit an event from taking place based on a concern that some attendees may react negatively or engage in illegal activity;
  • punish peaceful speakers if a listener’s reaction turns violent; or
  • silence a peaceful speaker as an easy alternative to managing a mass event.

A counterprotester may not lawfully silence, or substantially disrupt, another person’s protected speech. One does not have the right to a “Heckler’s Veto” by, for example, blocking-off access to an event featuring a controversial speaker or chanting over the remarks of that speaker.

The law would protect, however, a counterprotestor who wants to use their speech to picket outside an event, distribute leaflets, hold up signs, or host an alternative event at another location.

During a demonstration, school officials may choose to enlist campus security, campus police, or local law enforcement. These officers should not break up a gathering if people are complying with reasonable time, place, and manner restrictions—the big exceptions are if there is a “clear and present danger of riot,” a specific threat of harm to a particular person, or some other immediate threat to public safety (like the sustained shut down of a building entrance or major roadway).

If officers do give a dispersal order, they must provide actual notice of the order and allow a reasonable opportunity to comply, which includes sufficient time and an unobstructed exit path. The police may use reasonable force to break up a gathering or to arrest a person who is violating the law. What is “reasonable” depends on all the circumstances.

If you are accused of breaking school rules while protesting and charged with conduct that the law does not protect, you may face punishment through your school’s disciplinary system. Penalties could include community service, restitution, probation, suspension, or expulsion.

Your university or college may also try to prohibit students from participating in extracurricular activities, holding leadership positions in student groups, or participating in a graduation ceremony. It is also possible that an administration could respond by revoking financial assistance or threatening negative character reviews.

If your school accuses you of misconduct, the school is legally required to notify you of the particular charges alleged. Familiarize yourself with your due process rights and the school’s disciplinary procedures. Be sure to download and save all communications in a central place, investigate whether your school allows advisors or others to support you in the process, and be careful not to make any incriminating statements without first consulting a lawyer.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes delivers 'All In' speech to Texas Tech football team

The start of the new college football season has many fans and current NFL players excited. Every team gets a clean slate and eyes on a national championship. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is one of the many stars pushing to support their alma mater in any way possible as the 2024 campaign begins.

Mahomes recently returned to Texas Tech to provide extra motivation for the football team as they prepare for the start of the new college football season.

"I give y'all one thing: if I don't give y'all anything from this entire speech that I learned from my time at Texas Tech and in the NFL, and it's what I live by today, is when you play this game, you got to be all in," said Mahomes. "You got to be all-in on everything you do. And if I have one regret about my time at Texas Tech, I don't believe I truly was all in. We had great offenses and exciting teams. I got drafted in the first round, but was I all in? Was I all in on doing whatever it took in my extra time to win that Big 12 championship? And so, when I look back at my career, I don't believe I was. I went to class, practiced hard, worked out, and had a good time. I had a great time, but you could do all that and still be great in everything you do."

The three-time Super Bowl champion intently stared at every player in the room as he delivered his speech motivating the group ahead of their 2024 season opener next weekend.

"I'll let you all know one thing: for winning the Super Bowl Championship, you have a way better time doing that than that extra stuff you're gonna do on the weekends or whatever that is. There has to be a commitment to greatness, and that commitment is what will take y'all to that Big 12 championship." said Mahomes. "And trust me, I believe, I believe in all y'all. I've seen the work; I've seen the brand. I've been watching the videos, all the hype stuff, but at the end of the day, it comes down to how you're gonna play on that football field. I believe y'all have everything it takes right here. So make sure When you come to work every single day, when you step out of this building or step into it. You're all in."

During his illustrious career as a Red Raider, Mahomes accumulated 11,252 passing yards and 115 total touchdowns in three seasons. The Chiefs selected him tenth overall in the 2017 NFL Draft, but he maintained a strong bond with the university, supporting the program's growth.

'Officially an empty nester': Brooke Shields cries after dropping off daughters at college

Brooke Shields and her husband, Chris Henchy, are officially empty nesters.

In a tearful Instagram video on Aug. 26, Shields, 59, shared that her daughters, Rowan, 21, and Grier, 18, are both away at college.

Rowan is a senior at Wake Forest University, while her younger sister Grier just started her freshman year at the North Carolina school.

“They’re together at least,” an emotional Shields said as she wiped at her eyes. “It’s not easy. It’s not easy for the moms. I mean it’s just so weird. It’s so weird that (Grier’s) not here.”

The actor and Princeton University alum described drop-off as “really hard.” As soon as Grier started crying, the floodgates opened for Shields.

“And then I cried a good portion of the ride home,” Shields said. “So anyway I’m an empty nester. Wow.”

Al Roker’s wife, Deborah Roberts, knows exactly what her friend is experiencing. Roberts and Al, who share three children , also have the house all to themselves. 

“I know Brooke. But it gets a bit easier and always remember that we raised them to fly away!” Roberts wrote in the comments.

During an appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” in 2023, Shields revealed that she was “getting nervous” about Grier graduating from high school and going off on her own.

“It’s funny, I said to my daughter, I said ‘I’ve basically spent 18 years telling you what to do. Telling you how to be… so now I have to really allow you to be trusted,’” Shields told Clarkson . 

In 2021, Shields struggled to say goodbye to Rowan.

“My unique and extraordinary baby girl spreading her wings. I love you so. We are so proud of you,” Shields wrote on Instagram at the time. “This was the saddest drive away from anywhere I’ve ever had to make. But my baby is BEGINNING one of the most important adventures of her life to date…NOW!”

When  speaking with TODAY  about the experience, Shields joked she has a plan for how to survive the next few years: “Just move on campus, just buy an apartment next door!" But the star was quick to note that “while it’s sad for moms, it’s also a moment of pride.”
