A Review of the Efforts at National Unity in Nigeria

Profile image of Uche Eme-Uche

Since independence in 1960, successive Nigerian Governments have made national unity their foremost agenda. Various policies, schemes, and programmes such as the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC), Federal Character, Reorientation programmes etc have been employed without the anticipated outcomes. This paper states the efforts at national unity, reviews identified efforts and proffers suggestions on the way forward.

This paper seeks to examine one hundred years of Nigerian existence and the challenges of nation-building. Some literatures on the subject were reviewed while data analyses are from secondary sources. The elite theory was used to explain the issues therein. The paper reveals that since the amalgamation of Northern and southern protectorate in 1914 into a single entity by Lord Lugard, the country has been struggling on how to effectively build the nation with series of problems spanning from bad governance, socioeconomic inequality, federal character dilemma, ethno-religious crises, corruptions, leadership, etc. These obstacles have over the years threatened our national integration principle which is based on building a strong and prosperous nation irrespective of our differences. The paper concludes that no task at genuine nationhood, integration and development is more urgent than rebuilding the bonds of intergroup spirit and cohesion that has been cruelly sundered in the past hundred years of amalgamation and nationhood. We must not continue to allow peoples lacking a sense of national purpose to champion our existence as a nation. The paper however, recommends that for us to live in harmony as one nation we must work tirelessly towards producing a nationalistic and a patriotic leader devoid of ethnic or religious affiliation. Efforts should be channel to foster intercultural dialogue and understanding so as to avoid conflict among intergroup which are ingredients of conflict prevention.

Nigeria, like many other states characterized by ethno-linguistic, socio-economic, cultural and political heterogeneities began to adopt federal system from October, 1954, about forty years later when the British colonial masters together with (to some extent) the nationalists and politicians constitutionally instituted a federal system to among others properly accommodate the heterogeneities among the regions. The federal system has been in operation since then except for short period of Ironsi’s military regime (January-July, 1966). The operation of this system is however, not without somedegree of success and shortcomings. This paper studied the journey so far in adopting and institutiona-lising the system, the prospects, impediments and the questions of national unity and nation building. The study used secondary sources to gather data. The study found that: unity and cooperation are essential to Nigeria’s economic, political and social prosperity, harmony and achieving common national objectives; Nigeria’s national development is an embodiment of central, states and local interests involving heterogeneities as portrayed in the Nigerian make up; Nigeria has been practicing federal system for about sixty years now, but only little has been achieved in the attempt to foster unity and cooperation among Nigerians and pursue the task of nation building; that intense regional/states and local rivalries have shaped, dominated and threatened the federal system; the North-South religious-political dichotomy and politics negatively affect the pursuit of national unity and development; the level of unity and cooperation among Nigerians is poor and Nigerians tend to emphasize forces of division than unity and are today more committed to their ethnic, sectional, religious and other primordial sentiments thereby endangering the prospects of peace, unity, cohesiveness, progress and stability of the country; Nigerians are yet to arrive at and fully agree on a common type/structure of federalism to adopt; prolonged period of military has impeded the institutional and proper evolution of federalism and national development. The paper recommends among others diversification of economy especially to solid minerals and agric sectors, devising and working strictly according to development plans, institutionalisation of democratic principles and popular based decisions making, promotion of national integration, values and tolerance, cooperation, accommodation and social cohesion among Nigerians, more emphasis on national identity, recognition and respect of constitutionally established federal character, more emphasis on implementation of other government principles based on social justice, total respect for principles of democracy, fundamental rights and rule of law, checking and regulating the activities of ethno-religious organisations which overtly or covertly generate and increase tension in the federal structure and the polity.

Since the inception of the Nigerian nation, Nigerian governments, past and present, have made serious efforts to propagate policies and programmes that are geared towards national integration. Despite such well-intended and unity-oriented programmes and policies, Nigeria’s unity has continued to be plagued and threatened by embedded socio-cultural, religious and political dichotomies. Unless efforts are made to checkmate these divisive tendencies towards national integration, the long expected and loudly proclaimed oneness and indivisibility of Nigeria will remain a utopia. This paper, silhouetted against the backdrop of structural functionalism, advocates the necessity for national integration and the factors that are militating against the much desired national unity in Nigeria . Suggestions are made on how Nigeria can achieve national integration. This paper believes that achieving national integration is contingent on jumping the hurdles of ethnicity, corruption, a narcissistic ...

Nigeria is a heterogeneous society of over 250 ethnic nationalities with diverse history, culture and religion. These plural nations were brought together by Lord Lugard amalgamation of 1914 as one nation. Nigeria as a plural state has faced the challenges of nation building which includes lack of trust among the various nationalities, leadership crisis, religious problems, slow development, insecurity, bad image abroad, low foreign investment and low standard of living among others. This has led to agitations for restructuring of Nigerian nation. This paper therefore examines restructuring the Nigerian nation as a pathway to nation building. It is a qualitative work that relied on secondary source of data and anchored on pluralism theory which helps to explain the heterogeneous nature of Nigeria. The paper argued that restructuring Nigeria will create an enabling environment to achieve the goal of nation building in Nigeria. The paper believes that if the agitation for restructuring Nigeria is not attended to, the corporate existence of Nigeria as a nation remains under serious threat. It is the opinion of the paper that restructuring the Nigerian political and economic sector will bring the needed trust and the spirit of nationalism for nation building. The paper therefore recommends among others the restructuring of the political, economic and social structures of Nigeria backed with quality legislation from the parliament, good leadership and strong political will that will bring good results for nation building.

The necessity of national unity: defeated confederates’ international appeals to unity.

Ann L. Tucker is an assistant professor of history at the University of North Georgia. She earned her PhD at the University of South Carolina, and is the author of Newest Born of Nations: European Nationalist Movements and the Making of the Confederacy (UVa Press, 2020). She studies the US South and Civil War Era through a transnational perspective. You can find her at her website, annltucker.com, or on twitter @annltucker.

Citizens were divided. Violence threatened the stability of the nation. After the violence ended, calls rose for unity. This pattern played out recently with calls to move past and forgive insurrectionists in the name of national unity following the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol. Such a pattern is not unique to the Capitol riot, however, nor new in history. Similar patterns of division, violence, and calls for unity played out in the wake of the American Civil War. In particular, former Confederates, perhaps unexpectedly, demanded national unity in the months and years following their defeat. In making their case for national unity, former Confederates argued that they, too, were not the first to seek national unity in the wake of national violence. Drawing on the rich contemporary nineteenth century history of largely defeated nationalist movements in Europe, Confederates used comparisons between the defeated Confederacy and defeated nations in Europe to push for national unity – and, more specifically, for their own particular vision of national unity – in the aftermath of Confederate defeat.

Unity, of course, had been at the heart of the Civil War itself, as white southerners had rejected unity with the North and pursued independent nationhood instead, while the United States had fought to preserve national unity. Now, in the wake of four years of violence, bloodshed, and warfare, as former Confederates suddenly faced the consequences of their actions, even former Confederates found appeal in the idea of unity. They, however, held a very different vision of unity than did the Union during the war, or the Republicans during Reconstruction. For former Confederates, embracing unity was not an admission of culpability for the destruction of secession and the Civil War, nor an indication of true desire to unite with the North in reconstructing the postwar nation. Instead, for defeated Confederates, calling for unity was a means of forcing the Reconstruction to occur on their terms. They demanded that the nation could only be reconstructed through full forgiveness and restoration of power for former Confederates, with no punishment, accountability, or even alterations to the social, economic, and political system of white supremacy.

International comparisons proved particularly useful for former Confederates seeking to claim that unity could only come through forgiveness. In particular, defeated Confederates used international comparisons to argue that unity could only be achieved through pacification. These international examples taught that the only way to move forward was to forgo punishment or consequences, and instead restore full power to the same defeated Confederates who initiated the war in the first place.

Macon Telegraph  published “A Lesson from Italy,” declaring that the king of the new nation of Italy provided an example of virtue and democracy in the wake of war that the world, especially the US, would be wise to follow, and contrasted this approach with the US’s supposed course of using the excuse of war to limit white southerners’ democratic rights. [1]  Turning to the enemy of aspiring nations in Europe, the  New Orleans Picayune  asserted that “the Radical [Republican] policy, indeed, rejecting as it does the most approved lessons of history… would seem to… copy from Russia, nothing but the harsh outlines of a gigantic, unreasoning, unforgiving, pitiless despotism.” [2]  The  Richmond Whig  concurred as it praised President Andrew Johnson, infamous for his leniency toward former Confederates, for enabling unity by “appeal[ing] to [former Confederates’] highest and noblest impulses.” Johnson’s policies, according to the  Whig , allowed the nation to “bury the past and to look only to the future.” In contrast, the writer for the  Whig  declared, Radical Republicans sought “mistrust, military domination, and physical power,” and advanced policies that would “make of the South a province in which shall be smothered the condensed malignity and passionate hatred of Poland, Ireland, and Venetia.” [3]  To former Confederates, any policy other than forgiveness would destroy hopes for national unity by recreating the oppression found in tyrannical European empires.

Culture, A Veritable Tool For Development

An african proverb say “omi to ba gbagbe orisun e, ose tan ti o gbe”..

Olympics

By Florence Olanireti Adebayo

The river that forget it source is as the verge of drying off. Culture is the heart beat that define how we are as an individual and as a society (Joys Edward) it encompasses our shared values, beliefs, traditions, language and arts.

Culture celebrates our differences and highlights the beauty of our unique background, it encourages us to appreciate and respect the richness of other cultures as a nation.

Nigeria is  blessed and rich in diverse culture and endowed with much material information that can enrich and improve the peaceful coexistence of the Nation. Nigeria museum is saddled with the responsibility of curating both tangible and intangible material evidence in promoting peace and tranquility. The Nigeria museum held in trust the cultural wealth of the nation for all generation by its function and uniqueness, as well as it serves as the cultural conscience of the nation.

In present day, the pyramid growth in drug abuse, kidnapping prostitution and insurgences is fast and steadily claiming the lives of youth and threatening the peaceful co-existence of the country. Museums promote unity in the society using its resources to ensure understanding and appreciation of various group and culture that exist in the country using her education unit as a powerful tool for educating and fostering understanding to broaden the knowledge of our visitors/environment and promoting empathy which encourages open mindedness, tolerance and appreciation in vast spectrum of human experiences.

Through its cultural programs, language course, school programs and skills acquisition, museums bridge gap between people and reduce prejudice as we gain deeper understanding of one another. For example, museum collections will effect fostering of unity peace development community of the society and unite different ethnic groups making up the country and can reconcile conflict through various educational programs and activities that would sensitize collective goodwill of the nation.

However, this could be progressive achievement if there is a good working relationship between the museum and the ministry of Education with the aim of integrating museum studies in the education curriculum as this will enable children to have a deeper knowledge about their culture and this will give them a sense of belonging. It will also create an avenue to know about their indigenous art and industries when we catch them young. Using our cultural/natural heritage to influence the psyche and attitude of the people, promote peace and unity to sustain development.

Going by the decline trend in economic growth, unemployment and social ills in Nigeria today, it would be worthwhile as a nation to venture into the utilization of the nation’s cultural and national heritage as alternative means of promoting national development and creating peace and unity. Employment generation for the unemployed populace and which will enhance revenue generation for the country instead of concentrating solely on crude oil. However Nigeria cultural heritage resources will not on their own generate employment unless they are developed and announced to the world rather than anchoring them to tourism. The cultural sector ‘inclusive’ is a blessing in disguise if properly harness it will improve revenue generation and reduce dependency on oil production thereby leading to economy growth and development of the country.

Museum curating the cultural and natural heritage at her disposal collects, conserves, interpret, research and exhibition this materials both tangible and intangible heritage to teach and entertain the communities and its environment, thereby promoting unity through their various programs need to work with other authority in the cultural sector to improve indigenous language, promoting Nigeria dress culture, building orientation, hard work, respect for elders, and constituted authorities because language plays a vital in promoting and preservation of our cultural heritage.

It serves as a vehicle through which cultural knowledge is transmitted and shared. The use of English language in school and homes is leading to decline of many indigenous languages in many parts of Nigeria; this can lead to loss of cultural diversity if not attended to in some cases extinction of minor languages. On the other hand, the dress culture of a people is a major distinguishing factor of their culture, as it says a lot about the particular people.

Nigeria as a multi – cultural nation comprises also of diverse dress culture of her people, the most interesting aspect is that there is beauty in diversity and unity in diversity. Though the Nigerian dress culture is faced with challenges, particularly from effect from westernization and globalization. The indulgence in the use of western fabrics and materials has relegated our age long dress culture.

There is need therefore for re-orientation and recitation of our indigenous and ethnic value if we succeed beyond, we should strive hard to use our indigenous fabrics at national level and exporting them in commercial quantity. This tangible heritage must be preserved to boost our national pride and identity and also bring peace and prosperity of the nations.

Nigeria is blessed and rich in diverse culture and endowed with cultural information and it has the capacity to promote peace, unity and improve the economy through their various functions, thereby enhancing fast and speedy development.

Therefore, the leaders should strive to place the country’s museum in its rightful position with all necessary resources as one of the prime movers of the economy that promotes peace and unity using cultural and national heritage as a tool for nation’s development and growth.

Write an essay on “National Unity” in about 150-200 words. National unity means one nation as a whole formed in a one complete nation. Many people of different castes live in the same nation. They speak different languages. They have different modes of living and different religions. There are Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, Sikhs etc. though we have unity.

We can give several examples of the power of unity. Power lies in unity, not in diversity. A drop of water is not too strong enough to wash anything away the whole villages. A thin thread is very weak. Even a child can break it but when a number of threads are woven into a thick rope that an elephant can’t break so what made a feeble thread so strong. So unit is strength or power.

Unity brings peace and development. If we have good relationship with others our enemies can’t take advantage. It always drives peace. If there is peace the development works can run smoothly throughout the country. Now a day we have a glance of peace but the development works hasn’t been run as usual. Because of lack of political instability and wrong ideology people are being divided into groups in the name of region, castes and religions. The poverty is being increased day by day.

The government of Nepal has always urged the people to realize the value of national unity. The villagers have to be given the education about national unity. There should be punishment for criminal works otherwise a person can be hanged and died miserably.
