Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II – Everything you need to know for launch

An Introduction to Call of Duty’ s New Era

Welcome to the new era for Call of Duty ® .

On October 20, anyone who pre-purchased Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II gets Early Access to the game’s Campaign*, up to one week before the game’s official launch on October 28.

That Early Access period marks the end of a 141-day journey since the game’s reveal announcement on June 2, one that featured plenty of intel:

  • First, we were reintroduced to Task Force 141 , taking a quick dive into its global Campaign with one of its missions: Dark Water .
  • Through multiple Intel Drops, lead developer Infinity Ward explained key development concepts across Modern Warfare II , including its new Gunsmith .
  • Call of Duty®: Next released a wealth of intel; among other announcements, we saw the game’s innovative Multiplayer in action, hinted at the evolved Special Ops, and even went farther into the future with Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 , a game that shares the same engine — and locations — as Modern Warfare II .
  • Then we had the largest Beta in Call of Duty history , giving an early preview of Modern Warfare II ’s Multiplayer to more community members than ever before.

*One week based on estimated access; Actual play time subject to possible outages and applicable time zone differences.

This announcement is the final piece of intel before your hands-on introduction to Call of Duty ’s new era with Modern Warfare II Campaign Early Access.

Campaign — The Next Chapter of the Modern Warfare Story

presentation modern warfare 2

The Modern Warfare II Campaign is an indirect continuation of the Modern Warfare® (2019) story, picking up three years after Task Force 141’s original formation.

Under the supervision of Station Chief Kate Laswell, Captain John Price creates the international special operations group with two hand-picked selections from his storied military history – John “Soap” MacTavish and Simon “Ghost” Riley – and Kyle “Gaz” Garrick, the former Special Air Service Sergeant who worked alongside Price during the events of Modern Warfare .

Over the next 36 months, Task Force 141 goes dark to perform classified missions around the globe, leading up to the beginning of Modern Warfare II ’s story:

When a United States airstrike kills a foreign general, his next in line vows revenge, partnering with an international drug cartel to transport stolen U.S. ballistic missiles. With narcotics smuggling lanes at their disposal, a terror network is poised to launch a missile attack against United States targets unless Task Force 141 can stop them…

But in order to do so, can they become the very thing they sought to destroy?

Playing as and alongside members of Task Force 141, Mexican Special Forces, and Shadow Company, you will travel across multiple continents to prevent a global crisis while untangling a web of crime and deception. From piloting Gunships and battling within a convoy to identifying high-value targets and stealthily navigating underwater, you will need to become a true Tier One Operator to survive this pulse-pounding Campaign.

Take the full week to explore this story, and you may find some critical intel along the way…

Campaign — Prepare for Launch with Completion Rewards, Platform-Specific Accolades

presentation modern warfare 2

the Modern Warfare II Campaign offers completion rewards for use in Multiplayer, Special Ops, and Warzone 2.0.

This is everything you can unlock in order:

  • Calling Card: “Soap’s Determination”
  • Emblem: “What’s Done is Done”
  • 30 Minute Double XP Token
  • 30 Minute Double Weapon XP Token
  • Calling Card: “Chainlinked”
  • Base Operator: Chuy
  • Calling Card: “Gaz”
  • Base Operator: Nova
  • 1 Hour Double XP Token
  • 1 Hour Double Weapon XP Token
  • Calling Card: Shadow Company Ops
  • Base Operator: Reyes
  • Base Operator: Hutch

This Assault Rifle variant is Captain Price’s signature weapon that comes with four pre-equipped attachments: the Aim OP-V4 Reflex Optic, the SZ 1MW PEQ Laser, the FSS Covert V Silencer on the Muzzle, and the Lockgrip Pricision-40 Underbarrel Vertical Grip.

These attachments make this Weapon Blueprint an all-around great Primary Weapon; it is an excellent starting point for players of all skill levels across all game modes. Compared to the base weapon, this Weapon Blueprint offers more stability when aiming, reduced vertical and horizontal recoil, and a clear sight picture among other benefits like sound suppression.

Plus, you can use the Early Access period to knock out most of the platform-specific accolades, which are equal parts points of pride and practice for other modes.

One of these challenges involves completing Campaign on either of the hardest difficulty settings: Veteran and Realism. The latter turns off all HUD and lowers health for a true test of ability. Complete it, and you will be well prepared to face the AI combatants in Special Ops, Multiplayer, and Warzone 2.0.

The accolades and items can be unlocked at any time in Modern Warfare II . However, with a full week of Early Access, this is your opportunity to earn everything in Campaign before the full Modern Warfare II game launches.

MULTIPLAYER AND SPECIAL OPS OVERVIEW

Multiplayer — Innovative, Immersive, and World-Class; More Intel Before Release

presentation modern warfare 2

Modern Warfare II Multiplayer defines “emergent gameplay” with a focus on variety; those who played the Beta already got a glimpse of the game’s assortment of modes, locales, and Loadout items.

On day one, there will be 12 unique modes: 10 traditional modes on Core Maps and two Ground War modes on Battle Maps.

These maps are grouped into one of three regional categories:

presentation modern warfare 2

One Multiplayer map within Al Mazrah is Al Bagra Fortress, located on the southern shore of the region.

This metropolitan area and its outskirts within the Republic of Adal serves as the main region for Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0.

Several Core and Battle Maps will be based in this region, making Multiplayer a phenomenal place to learn some of its points of interest in detail.

presentation modern warfare 2

One Multiplayer map within Las Almas is Mercado Las Almas, centrally located within the region’s southeastern town.

A major place of interest within the Modern Warfare II Campaign, Las Almas is a Central American region with a similar footprint to Al Mazrah.

In Multiplayer, the region will host a similar split of Core and Battle Maps.

presentation modern warfare 2

One Multiplayer map from elsewhere in the Modern Warfare II universe.

Rest of the World

The last group of Multiplayer locales is an assortment of Core Maps with no specific region. A mixture of places within the Campaign and completely outside of the entire main storyline, these maps round out the Modern Warfare II universe with glimpses of what is happening outside of Al Mazrah and Las Almas.

Prior to the full game release, expect this blog to bring you a full breakdown of all Multiplayer-specific features, including maps, modes, and launch Playlists; tips on creating a Loadout; and more.

Special Ops — Replayable Co-Op, Raids Coming in Season 01

presentation modern warfare 2

An evolution of the Special Ops mode from Modern Warfare (2019), this co-op experience will initially feature three missions at launch, all taking place in Al Mazrah:

presentation modern warfare 2

Low Profile

Infiltrate a town in the dead of night to uncover intel and evidence left behind by Al Qatala before exfiltrating. Stealth is key to survival.

presentation modern warfare 2

Denied Area

Multiple SAM turrets are preventing reinforcements from entering Al Mazrah. With the help of a vehicle, navigate through the winding streets of a suburb to destroy them; then speed over to the exfil plane to escape.

presentation modern warfare 2

Defender: Mt Zaya

A love letter to fans of survival modes — defend the observatory from increasingly difficult waves of enemies attempting to detonate bombs. Between each wave, Operators can spend cash to get items, such as Killstreaks, Self-Revive kits, and armor plates.

presentation modern warfare 2

In Special Ops, Operators will have access to a Backpack to store equipment and one of three Kits that are similar to a set of Perks, Field Upgrades, and Killstreaks in Multiplayer:

Assault: Kit focused on increased armor with an Armor Box Field Upgrade — later levels include the Assault Suit munition (think mini-Juggernaut), increased armor capacity, and free Stims included in the Backpack.

Medic: Kit focused on quicker revives with a Revive Pistol Field Upgrade for ranged instant revives — later levels include a free Bomb Drone, similar benefits to the Double Time Perk, and free Claymores and anti-tank mines included in the Backpack.

Recon: Kit focused on better equipment usage with a Snapshot Pulse Field Upgrade to see nearby enemies — later levels include the ability to automatically restock Lethals and Tacticals over time, the ability to carry extra equipment, and a free Heartbeat Sensor and Spotter Scope included in the Backpack.

presentation modern warfare 2

Kits are leveled up by earning Stars through missions and mission-related challenges, which gives all three of these launch missions plenty of replayability.

We highly recommend completing all three Special Ops missions with three stars and have at least one Kit leveled up to Tier 5 before Raids, a direct continuation of the Campaign, are introduced to Special Ops later in Season 01.

Progression — The Journey at Launch, More Intel Prior to Release

presentation modern warfare 2

At launch, there is more to Modern Warfare II than the traditional Military Ranks.

Prior to Season 01, which will feature a new Battle Pass system and Seasonal Prestige, players will have access to the following Progression systems:

  • Military Ranks: From Levels 1–55, unlock all Weapon Platforms, Multiplayer Loadout Items, and Special Ops Kits.
  • Weapon Platforms: Each Weapon Platform will feature Camo and Mastery challenges. Most will include Progression trees with the ability to unlock platform-specific and universal attachments, with some also allowing you to unlock Receivers, which serve as additional functional weapons within the platform.
  • Special Ops Kits: Each Special Ops Kit can be leveled up — to a maximum of Rank 10 — by replaying missions or completing challenges to earn Stars.
  • Base Operator Unlock Challenges: Earn 18 Operators through challenges related to Campaign, Multiplayer, and Special Ops.
  • Daily Challenges: In Multiplayer and Special Ops, complete three challenges every day for XP rewards and unlock a bonus challenge, which offers triple the XP of a regular daily challenge.
  • Additional Challenges: Career Milestone challenges, such as winning matches on specific game modes, will also be available for XP and cosmetic rewards.

Expect a breakdown of all these Progression systems in a dedicated blog within the game’s release window.

THE BEST WAY TO PREPARE FOR WARZONE 2.0, DROPPING ON NOV. 16

Operators — Meet SpecGru and KorTac

presentation modern warfare 2

Following the events of the Campaign, two private military contractors — SpecGru and KorTac — are founded as special forces for hire, capable of carrying out international tactical operations.

These two factions are ready to deploy in Modern Warfare II Multiplayer and Special Ops at launch . All players will automatically have access to the default Mil-Sim Operators for each faction, which have four unique outfits.

Eighteen more Operators can be unlocked through Campaign, Multiplayer, and Special Ops challenges, to be detailed as part of our Progression overview later this month.

In addition, Price, Farah, Soap and Ghost Operators are available via the Vault Edition’s Red Team 141 pack.

Once unlocked, all these Operators will also be available in Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0, alongside new Operators that will arrive in Season 01 and beyond.

Here is the full roster of non-Mil-Sim Operators across the two factions:

SpecGru Operators

Manuel “Chuy”

Ordaz: A Mexican soldier formerly enlisted in the Cuerpo de Fuerzas Especiales, off the recommendation of Alejandro Vargas. Using the knowledge he gained while serving with the Mexican Special Forces, he currently trains locals to defend against cartel corruption, even when outmanned or outgunned.

Sobieslaw “Gromsko” Kościuszko: A Polish modern-day hussar part of Jednostka Wojskowa 2305, AKA the GROM (Group for Operational Maneuvering Response). Known for his extensive medical training and ability to conduct covert operations, just as the group’s mottos would suggest.

Kleópatros “Kleo” Gavras: A Greek Zeta Amphibious Raiders Squadron (Z’MAK) special forces officer, part of the greater Hellenic Armed Forces. Specializes in stealth combat and known for her “Green Eyes of Hades,” the last thing her enemies see before their death.

Tse “Luna” Míngzhū: A first-generation Singaporean-American West Point graduate, part of the Ground Branch within the CIA’s Special Activity Center (SAC) following refusal of promotion. Was critical in tracking down the Al Qatala cell responsible for the London terror attacks in the Modern Warfare (2019) Campaign.

Nila “Nova” Brown: A British 42 Commando L Company leader within the Royal Marines, specializing in rescuing downed airmen. A third-generation pilot, her nickname was awarded after her Royal Air Force mission, where she sacrificed her aircraft to destroy another in “supernova” fashion.

Enzo “Reyes”: A former Canadian Special Operations Regiment (CSOR) member with encyclopedic knowledge of military history and small team tactics. After lying about his age and forging signatures for selection, he butted heads with instructors before serving multiple tours in Al-Mazrah and Urzikstan, leaving in 2020 to join multi-national “deniable forces.”

Zhiqiang “Zimo” Wong: A Chinese private military contractor formerly a member of the Sharp Blade Commandos.

“Farah” Karim (Red Team 141): Founder and leader of the Urzikstan Liberation Force. A trusted ally to Task Force 141 and estranged sister to Hadir, an Al Qatala asset whose fate is currently unknown.

Simon “Ghost” Riley (Red Team 141): A lieutenant within Task Force 141, serving on numerous short-term covert assignments in classified locations. Redacted past. Man of few words. Legendary soldier that needs no introduction.

John “Price” (Red Team 141): Former 22nd Special Air Service Regiment member known by call sign “Bravo Six.” Currently leads Joint Operations squadron Task Force 141, with the help of CIA Station Chief Kate Laswell and oversight of General Shepherd under the Five Eyes Alliance.

Johnny “Soap” Mactavish (Red Team 141): Sniper and demolitions expert hand-selected for Task Force 141. Youngest candidate to pass Special Air Service (SAS) selection in Royal Army history, known for “cleaning house” as a highly decorated officer under the tutelage of Captain John Price.

KorTac Operators

presentation modern warfare 2

Tor “Aksel” Eriksen: A Norwegian Marinejegerkommandoen all-around specialist. Considered a modern-day Viking with a full spectrum of abilities, from diving to HALO jumping, E.O.D. to hostage rescue situations.

“Calisto” Allard: A French-Spanish descendent of France’s last royal family who rebelled to join the elite Chasseurs Alpins of the 27th Mountain Infantry Brigade. An expert of high-altitude combat known for incredible accuracy, especially her preferred weapon: the bow.

Declan Mac“Conor”: An Irish Defense Forces insurgency specialist within the Army Ranger Wing. Known for leading counterterrorism, hostage rescue, and special reconnaissance operations.

“Fender” Takacs: A Hungarian Zászlós (Master Sergeant) of the country’s Defense Forces who specializes in high-value targets, demolitions, and urban warfare. Raised without knowing the identity of his father, a “great” CIA Operator, he was told to always hide his face, doing so with a custom helmet.

Kim “Horangi” Hong-jin (Beta Operator Skin Reward): A South-Korean gambler turned soldier of fortune, once assigned to the ROK Armed Force’s 13th Special Mission Brigade. Expert in subduing high-value targets with extreme risk tendencies.

Darnell “Hutch” Hutchinson: An American college football athlete turned Marine network and data specialist. With the help of the Call of Duty Endowment, he found employment in the private cybersecurity sector after four years of active-duty service, but ultimately transitioned back once he learned of the Marine Corps Forces Cyberspace Command (MARFORCYBER).

“König”: An Austrian Jagdkommando within his country’s Special Forces, only known to be a mountain of a man with a sniper hood covering his face.

Rozlin “Roze” Helms: An American Army Ranger, who was formerly contracted by the Jackals to eliminate Al Qatala in Africa, and Shadow Company to seek order in Verdansk. Highly sought after for her proficiency in small-unit tactics and close-combat engagements, she ripped up her contract within the tumultuous company and her dark suits in early 2022 to align with SpecGru.

Salvatrice “Stiletto” Muselli: An Italian law enforcement officer within the Carabinieri’s Anti-Mafia and Anti-Drug Task Forces, notorious for her signature switchblade. A fearless urban-warfare specialist that used her experience against the Cammora to train police forces against other crime syndicates and terrorist cells, including those in Las Almas.

Sami “Zero” Zakaria: An Egyptian Task Force 777 Operator, part of the counter-terrorism unit within the country’s premier El-Sa’ka Forces. His nickname comes from his journey to service: grief-stricken after surviving a nightclub attack that saw him lose his sisters, he sacrificed his opulent and privileged life for a selfless position in protecting others.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 review

Infinity ward proves that it's the call of duty studio to beat., our verdict.

Modern Warfare 2 sets a new bar for Call of Duty all over again.

PC Gamer's got your back Our experienced team dedicates many hours to every review, to really get to the heart of what matters most to you. Find out more about how we evaluate games and hardware.

What is it?  The next Call of Duty, and a precursor to Warzone 2.0. Expect to pay:  $70/£65 Release date:  October 28, 2022 Developer:  Infinity Ward Publisher:  Activision Blizzard Reviewed on:  RTX 3060, Ryzen 7 5700G 3.8Ghz, 16GB RAM Multiplayer?  Up to 64 players Link:   Official Site

Modern Warfare 2's greatest strength is that it doesn't have a gimmick, because it doesn't need one.

All Modern Warfare 2 needs to be is a great shooter, and it delivers. This is the Call of Duty experience, deconstructed, reconsidered, and obsessively optimized over 15 uninterrupted years of iteration. I know when I'm playing a Black Ops game because it has offbeat arcade modes and the latest iteration of Nuketown. I know I'm playing a Modern Warfare game because the shooting is so finely tuned that I want to take my Gunsmith build out to dinner. Infinity Ward has officially mastered the instant gratification of aiming down sights and deleting targets.

That goes a long way, though some of Modern Warfare 2's biggest swings, such as revamped progression and a genre-bending campaign, are less elegant. It also suffers from an obtuse UI, fits of crashes, weird bugs, and the unexplained absence of basic features like stat tracking. But altogether, it's a good year for Call of Duty.

I said in 2019's CoD review that Modern Warfare "sets the bar high for first-person gun feel." Consider Modern Warfare 2 the new bar. Ballistics are once again physically simulated (not hitscan), but you wouldn't know it from playing on regular 6v6 maps. On arena maps with short sightlines, guns behave like lasers that instantly tag targets. Jump into a 64-player Ground War match and the same guns accommodate to firefights spanning entire city blocks, requiring players to lead shots and account for bullet drop. It's kind of wild how flexible and seamless the system is—even in the most recent Battlefield, a series that's dealt in simulated ballistics for 20 years, guns are a little too slow up close.

Modern Warfare 2's silky physics compare favorably if you've been playing Vanguard for the past year, or even better if you've stuck with Cold War for the last two. I never quite got over Cold War's noticeably sluggish hit detection; it'd take around 5-7 frames for point-blank shots to register in my tests. Under similarly unscientific testing conditions (me counting frames in replays recorded at 60 fps), MW2's latency is a far less noticeable 2-3 frames. It's not clear to me exactly how many factors are at play here. It could be that Treyarch's guns appear slower because they are slower by design, but regardless, Infinity Ward's interpretation is better.

By gluing our boots more firmly to the ground, Call of Duty has finally created the space to be a tactical FPS.

As a counterbalance to Modern Warfare 2's wicked-quick ballistics and time-to-kill, Infinity Ward has pumped the brakes on operators themselves. In terms of movement, this is by far the slowest CoD in recent memory. Established traversal techniques like slide canceling and bunnyhopping, much to the dismay of CoD's loudest fans , have been deliberately abolished. The minimap, breaking with 15 years of tradition, no longer highlights enemies as red dots whenever a shot is fired. Traditionalists will tell you these tweaks are bad for the series—that they "lower the skill gap" or encourage dishonorable camping—but this paints an incomplete picture.

By gluing our boots more firmly to the ground, Call of Duty has finally created the space to be a more methodical, dare I say tactical , FPS. For the first time in years, it is actually a better idea to tread lightly, hold angles, and listen for footsteps than full-sprint down every straightaway and bunnyhop around corners. And allow me to formally debunk the camping paranoia—yes, at some point a guy named I_Just-Shot-Ya will set up on top of a building and look through a scope for the entirety of your match, but so far this is no more common than we're already used to. In fact, the arrival of my new favorite throwable, the Drill Charge, makes it easier than ever to dislodge a comfortable camper.

My only gripe is that Modern Warfare 2 doesn't go far enough. The omnipresence of the UAV means that I still spend way too much time glancing at the map for red dots. The threat of sudden destruction at the hands of overpowered stealth bombers, chopper gunners, and miniature tank drones remains constant. I'd Ctrl+A+Delete all killstreaks from the game if it were up to me, though I reckon a move that monumental would create an angry mob outside Activision .

Great mousefeel

When friends ask me what I mean when I say "Modern Warfare's guns just feel better," it's easier to show than tell. Here's a clip showing the firing and reloading of one of my new favorite guns, the Basilisk revolver (crank the volume up too):

The Basilisk, in both size and stature, delivers on the promise of hand cannon, and it's cool that I could've told you that had I only heard it fired from half a mile away. We think of Call of Duty as arcadey and unsophisticated, but MW2 disrupts that reputation. Infinity Ward demonstrates its care for fidelity and intricacy. Individual bullets in Modern Warfare 2 snap downrange and send rippled, gradually-waning shockwaves through the air. It's not just about whether or not the guns look cool and make loud sounds (though both apply here)—MW2 cares just as much about the routine actions that get FPSes from A to B. Reload animations bask in tacticool mastery with stylish yet efficient magazine swaps that'd get the John Wick stamp of approval.

That Basilisk revolver has three different reloads depending on how many rounds are left in the chamber, including a distinct animation for reloading two spent casings without replacing all six. Sound effects are what tie it all together: In the clip above, I counted eight unique scrapes, clicks, and metallic clangs for just one reload animation. I wonder how many of these 88 compressed gigabytes on my SSD are raw audio.

The little stuff has a real impact on the big stuff. The foundation of modern Call of Duty is constant repetition, and when I'm not feeling particularly motivated to matchmake into my sixth straight round of Domination for the promise of a gaudy suppressor or mildly cool digital camo, I can always find the fun in Modern Warfare 2's perfectly tuned FPS fundamentals. It's a piece that was missing from both Cold War and Vanguard, and likely the reason I didn't stick with those games but maintained a steady relationship with MW2019.

Create-a-Clash

Call of Duty might as well have coined the advice "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," but Infinity Ward got a little too ambitious with Modern Warfare 2's iteration of Gunsmith.

Modern Warfare 2 turns a process that used to be automatic into a list of byzantine chores.

Leveling up guns is now the only path to unlocking other guns that are part of the same family. So if you, like me, rushed to try out the FSS Hurricane, the SMG variant of the M4 with a wonderfully weird magazine that looks like you're slotting a graphics card into a gun, it's not as simple as "get to level 20." You have to work down the M4 tech tree, starting with the standard M4 rifle, graduating to the FTAC Recon (the DMR variant), and eventually the Hurricane. I love the intention here—tying guns of various types to a single platform formalizes a cohesion that has always existed in Infinity Ward's arsenals. It's cool to scroll through the AK-47 family tree of assault rifles, LMGs, and SMGs and compare/contrast. By testing out the many interpretations of a single gun, the distinct characteristics of the platform shine through, like the AK's theme of high damage checked by wobbly recoil. That said, our new tech tree future has some huge, gaping holes that have yet to be filled.

For one, attachments are a freaking nightmare. Like guns themselves, all attachments are now married to progressions of specific weapons. Infinity Ward pitched Modern Warfare 2's attachment changes as a convenience—now when you unlock a red dot sight for the MP5, it's available for all guns that can use that sight. Sounds straightforward, but what Infinity Ward didn't mention (and what the game itself does a poor job explaining) is that all of Modern Warfare 2's 100+ attachments have each been assigned exactly one gun capable of unlocking it.

mw2 loadouts

This has already led to many confusing trips to the Gunsmith. The worst part is paging through MW2's many layers of menus to unravel a confusing web of unlocks. Here's a particularly extreme case of me wanting to get one of my favorite optics, the SZ Mini, for my SCAR rifle:

  • Find SZ Mini sight within Gunsmith
  • Discover it is unlocked by reaching level 11 with the Lachmann SMG
  • Oops, I do not have the Lachmann SMG. How do I unlock that?
  • I see, you get the SMG by reaching level 12 with the Lachmann 556
  • Yikes, don't have the Lachmann 556 either. Lemme guess…
  • Yep, unlock the 556 by reaching level 13 with the Lachmann 762

Earning the SZ Mini used to be as simple as using the gun you want to put it on. Modern Warfare 2 turns a process that used to be automatic into a list of byzantine chores. The problem is twofold: it takes too long to unlock attachments, and it's hard to know what it is you're even chasing. The only way to view a gun's unlocks is a horizontally-scrolling menu that shows tiny pictures of attachments with no option to click through for details. You can equip a gun and edit it to see a complete list of each attachment type, but if you don't know exactly what you're looking for already, it's a needle/haystack scenario. I never used to mind vague attachment descriptions when unlocks were passive, but now that I have to make a conscious decision about which grip, scope, or stock to pursue next, the lack of clarity is infuriating.

I believe there is a version of this system that makes more sense. Infinity Ward has tried to shove a spreadsheet's worth of tiered unlocks and intermingling dependencies into elegant, streamlined menus. You can't have it both ways. It'd also be nice if there was more than one way to unlock attachments (maybe the occasional ability to skip the progression line and instantly unlock a scope would do the trick).

Unexpectedly, one of my biggest barriers to enjoying Modern Warfare 2 has been keeping it running long enough to finish a match. Crashes have been abrupt and frequent during launch week—I've been booted to desktop 14 times in the last week.

I didn't even know I wanted this feature a week ago and now I don't want to live without it.

Some of these bugs, like one that'd reliably crash the game after partying up with friends, have been fixed, while others persist. I can't seem to stream the game on Discord for more than 20 minutes before it conks out, but a crash seems less likely if I close my stream. This is the rockiest CoD launch I can remember, enough that you should consider holding out for a few more patches to play uninterrupted. Infinity Ward has made it clear crashes are a top priority. One good sign: yesterday, a bug in Nvidia's latest video drivers causing graphical glitches finally got a hotfix .

I've also recognized a few old bugs from Modern Warfare 2019 creeping into the sequel, particularly little menu annoyances. Sometimes my friend's operator will be holding my gun on the main menu. Icons for attachments often fail to load, text will overlap itself, and jumping between game modes on the playlist screen takes a weirdly long time to load. I mention this stuff not because it's unacceptable (giant games have bugs), but because this is the sort of stuff that never actually got completely fixed in MW2019. Six months into that game's run, I was still guessing which of my loadouts were which because all the icons on the in-game menu were blank. I hope that doesn't happen again.

modern warfare 2

Other than those glaring crashes, Modern Warfare 2 is a pretty great PC port. At 1080p, default high settings, DLSS set to Quality on my RTX 3060, 6v6 maps are a smooth 90-110 fps. Ground War holds up surprisingly well with a tripled player count, though expect a 5-10 fps drop. Considering how gorgeous the game is, I'm impressed by the engine's flexibility and the malleability of its graphics settings. There are so many knobs to tweak that "Shadows and Lighting" is its own section with nine different dropdown menus. MW2 supports not one, not two, but five different AI upscaling techniques.

New to MW2 is a "Quick Settings" section that's always immediately available at the top of the pause screen. By default this section has a few obvious settings players like to tweak often, like master volume, display mode, and mouse sensitivity, though the best part is that it's entirely customizable. Hover over any setting, press C, and it becomes one of your 15 favorites in Quick Settings. This is genius.

I'm saving the best for last: the settings menu has a search bar. A freaking search bar, for options! For the first time in perhaps any videogame ever, I didn't have to enter a scavenger hunt to find subtitles. I just searched for it, and it was there. I didn't even know I wanted this feature a week ago and now I don't want to live without it. It's these quality-of-life touches that make me appreciate that, despite CoD's history of spotty PC ports, Activision is taking the PC platform seriously by dedicating an entire studio, Beenox, to the job. The work shows.

Oh that's right, this gargantuan multiplayer shooter also has a very pretty seven-hour campaign that oozes "expensive" from every corner. As covered in earlier impressions , Modern Warfare 2's campaign is more about living a series of spectacular moments than following its rote geopolitical drama. This year, Call of Duty trades a fictional corner of the Middle East for a fictional corner of Mexico, Las Almas, controlled by a cartel. That cartel happens to be harboring the international terrorist in Captain Price's crosshairs.

Infinity Ward saw the enthusiasm around the return of Captain Price and Gaz in MW2019 and has raised us one Soap MacTavish and a Ghost. The campaign really likes to indulge in the return of its spec ops quartet. The opening mission concludes with a reintroduction of Ghost presented with the same reverent, legendary air of Han Solo's return to Star Wars.

At first I thought Infinity Ward was assigning unearned esteem to characters that, at their original peak, were one-note "follow me" companions created to be picked off one by one—most people only remember Ghost because of the way he's killed—but honestly, these meatheads carry more nostalgic power within me than I thought. I did get excited when Ghost first appeared, and I even liked seeing Soap's stupid mohawk again (a fashion choice that stands out a lot more than it did in 2009). The gang still brings almost nothing to the table in terms of personality, but occasional moments of in-mission dialogue choices (think Titanfall 2) are a modest attempt at selling them as a brotherhood.

The campaign's 17-mission run is a healthy mix of familiar corridor shootouts and digressions into gimmicky experiments. You won't find Treyarch-style multiple endings or side quests, but there are a few truly memorable missions. My favorite, Recon By Fire, is an evolution of Call of Duty 4's iconic "All Ghillied Up" mission with a sandboxy twist. I also loved the first half of Prison Break, which briefly turns an FPS into an isometric tactics game as Soap guides Ghost through a risky solo infiltration via CCTV cameras.

modern warfare 2 campaign

I'm still thinking about how cool those moments were now two weeks later, but the highlights are stained by some real stinkers, too. That one mission from the trailer where you jump from truck to truck like a government-sanctioned Nathan Drake? Too long, surprisingly boring, and janky as hell.

I'm glad Modern Warfare 2 opts for a generally lighter tone than MW2019's embarrassingly edgy attitude, but it's a bummer that Infinity Ward can't seem to make a campaign without a handful of moments that feel uncomfortably giddy about the morally black world of special operations. Team Price are the heroes of the story, and yet one mission is dedicated to exploding the hell out of a small Mexican town from an AC-130. I'm not expecting a reflection on war on the level of Spec Ops: The Line, but you'd think at least one of these righteous freedom fighters would acknowledge that the mission was a total disaster as they drive away from a pile of rubble.

These moments undercut the inter-squad relationships that Infinity Ward tries to build in the quiet times. It's hard to enjoy any sense of comradery after moments where I'm aiming a gun at civilians to "de-escalate" them, for example.

modern warfare 2

It's easy to look at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and write it off as "just the same thing again." And yes, Modern Warfare 2 is 'yet another' CoD with M4s, red dots, kill streaks, and a fun (but conventional) 7-hour campaign. But to me and the millions of enthusiastic fans who play these games every year, Modern Warfare 2 isn't the latest Call of Duty game—it's the latest Infinity Ward game. And nobody does Call of Duty better than Infinity Ward.

In the three years since Infinity Ward made the best CoD in years with Modern Warfare 2019 and then shipped the immediately successful Call of Duty: Warzone, the series has been moving backwards. Cold War was a fun distraction with flashy '80s locales, approximately a billion modes, and boring guns. Vanguard, armed with the MW2019 engine, was a better shooter, but also a WW2 revival that nobody asked for.

Modern Warfare 2 is exactly what I was asking for. As the stewards of Call of Duty filling the gap left by no new game coming in 2023, and the upcoming Warzone 2.0, Activision is putting its full weight behind Infinity Ward as a lead studio. Modern Warfare 2 is a good argument that they're the right folks for the job.

Activision hosted its latest Call of Duty presentation on Thursday, where the company revealed its upcoming plans for the series including new details about Modern Warfare 2 , and the free-to-play battle royale sequel Warzone 2.0 . Among the most important announcements was the release date for Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 , which will be available Nov. 16 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC (via Battle.net and Steam), Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.

To help you make sense of all the other announcements that Activision made during the event, here are the big announcements from Call of Duty Next.

Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0

Al Mazrah map from Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0

Warzone 2.0 is a massive new sequel to Call of Duty’s tremendously popular battle royale shooter. Warzone 2.0 will take place on an entirely new map called Al Mazrah that combines desert combat with sprawling cities. Along with dozens of new areas and points of interest to explore, Al Mazrah will also include a new version of Warzone ’s Gulag, which will require players to fight their way out in 2v2 matches. The new Gulag includes a few new mechanics, like a prowling warden and weapons scattered around the map.

The game also introduces a new twist on the battle royale formula with multiple circles across the map that will segregate groups of players before eventually pulling them all back together for a few climactic fights.

As with the original game, Warzone 2.0 will also include all of the weapons from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 , which will be released on Oct. 26, and the two games will feature cross-progression. The game will also feature a new mode called DMZ, which will task players with entering the battlefield, then extracting with whatever gear they can.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer and Loadout 2.0

A player aims a submachine gun at an opponent inside a burning office building in a screenshot from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

During the Next presentation, Infinity Ward revealed new information on Modern Warfare 2 ’s multiplayer mode, and how it differs from previous Call of Duty entries.

One of Modern Warfare 2 ’s standout new features is the Loadout 2.0 system, which builds on Infinity Ward’s weapon customization from 2019’s Modern Warfare by giving players more ways to customize their weapon, grouping the arsenal together based on their weapon platform. This system will also be part of Warzone 2.0 , giving players more options for customizing their gear.

Modern Warfare 2 will also update Call of Duty’s multiplayer formula in a variety of ways, with refined sprinting, swimming, and mantling. The game also includes some larger additions like third-person multiplayer playlists, the return of the cooperative Spec Ops mode, and AI players on certain extra-large maps and modes.

Infinity Ward also mentioned a new mode called Raids, but didn’t go into detail on it during the presentation.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 beta

We already knew that Modern Warfare 2 had a beta on the way , but during Call of Duty Next, Infinity Ward let players know some of the features that they could expect from the game’s brief testing period.

Along with the game’s regular six-versus-six mode, the beta will also include the Ground War mode, which will pit two teams of 32 players each against each other and take place inside some of Warzone 2.0 ’s points of interest. The beta includes the Sarrif Bay Ground War map, and three core multiplayer maps: Valderas Museum, Farm 18, and Mercado Las Almas.

The beta will also include some of Modern Warfare 2 ’s new tactical modes like Knockout and Prisoner rescue which give teams limited respawns. There’s also a new mode called Invasion where 32-player teams face-off against each other in a deathmatch, along with numerous AI combatants.

The Modern Warfare 2 beta begins on Sept. 16 for PlayStation players who pre-ordered the game and will roll out to other platforms later, including Xbox and PC on Sept. 22.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Single-Player Review

Captain price and co return in an underwhelming and overly familiar sequel..

Matt Purslow Avatar

This is our single-player campaign review for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. For our thoughts on PvP, check out the multiplayer review .

In five years time when we discuss Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, there will be no confusion as to which of the two games that share that name people are referring to. Thanks to a lackluster story, fumbled mechanical innovations, and largely underwhelming mission design, this year’s Call of Duty campaign is an unfortunate misfire that fails to live up to standards set by not only its unforgettable 2009 namesake , but also its 2019 predecessor . While it is graphically impressive, the gunplay remains state of the art, and there are some welcome but all-too-brief attempts to tread new ground, Modern Warfare 2’s campaign relies too much on echoing the victories of Call of Dutys past rather than establishing its own triumphs.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022) - Campaign Screenshots

presentation modern warfare 2

The six-hour campaign whisks you away from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s Middle Eastern frontlines and drops you into Mexico for the majority of its run. That’s thanks to the addition of the Las Almas drug cartel to the list of foes, who fulfill the exact same tired stereotypical roles that you’ve seen everywhere from Ghost Recon: Wildlands to Bad Boys. They’re heavily embroiled in a plot that involves an Iranian arms deal, stolen US missiles, and the interplay between multiple nations’ special forces. The quality of this story is a substantial step down from its predecessor; where Modern Warfare examined the human stories that emerge from military occupation and (lightly) assessed sacrificing a piece of your own morality in order to protect the civilian world, Modern Warfare 2 is more interested in broader, shallower action. The result is paper-thin, gung-ho characters and a conclusion that can be predicted from barely 30 minutes in. Expect less Kathryn Bigelow and more Michael Bay vibes for this chapter.

That doesn’t mean there are not some more immediate, base-level thrills to be found while powering through that story, though. As ever, Call of Duty is on the cutting edge of graphics technology, and so looks incredibly handsome from practically every angle. While Mexico has plenty of lovely vistas, a brief visit to Amsterdam really demonstrates Modern Warfare 2’s graphical grunt thanks to impeccable attention to detail and gorgeous lighting effects.

Likewise, as you’d expect from Call of Duty, the shooting is also pulled straight from the top shelf. Weapon handling is precise and punchy, and the visual, physical, and particularly audio feedback is in a league most FPS games can only dream of. Praise should certainly be laid on the sniper and assault rifles in particular, which feel the best they ever have. There’s a seemingly never-ending collection of weapons to pick up, each of which feels distinct in feedback and form, although rarely does the mission design favor one type over another to the point that different gun categories can feel interchangeable.

Modern Warfare 2 doubles down on the smaller, more ‘realistically’ sized combat engagements of its predecessor. This makes for a Call of Duty campaign with a distinct rhythm; there’s much more methodical room clearing than there is taking part in large-scale, chaotic battles. This helps cement an identity for the rebooted Modern Warfare series, but comes at the expense of the intensity that has fueled some of the original games’ most memorable shootouts. I’d be more welcoming of this change if it weren’t for the addition of armored enemies, who must have their helmets or vests shattered before you’re able to land the killing blow. They initially feel like fun curveballs, but quickly become annoying bullet sponges that not only erode the efficiency of Call of Duty’s long-standing double-tap-to-kill approach, but also shatters any of the realism those smaller encounters are attempting to build.

Mission design is, as you’d expect, admirably varied and often built upon a novel concept. Those that fall back on more standard templates feel underwhelming and often quite static, with multiple ‘hold the line’ objectives and other such generic fare, although these are thankfully outnumbered by levels with better purpose. But while most of developer Infinity Ward’s campaigns have had a poster child mission (All Ghillied Up, No Russian, and Clean House to name just three), Modern Warfare 2 struggles to make anything quite as memorable.

Its best attempt is Alone, a stealth level in which you must escape a labyrinth-like town packed with guards. Starting completely unarmed, you gather materials and craft a variety of DIY tools – smoke bombs, trip mines, lock breaking gizmos – and use them to work your way to the exit. This has all the makings of a star Call of Duty mission, but is frustratingly undermined by the fact that your character is injured and can only walk at a snail's pace. It makes weaving between guard patrols a chore and its 40-minute duration seem like a lifetime. Elsewhere, there’s an unwieldy car chase that’s a poor alternative to Uncharted 4’s showstopper, and a brief-but-fun infiltration of a cartel boss’s mansion that has a (very) light Hitman touch about it as your disguised soldier rubs shoulders with enemies.

Every IGN Call of Duty Review

presentation modern warfare 2

But the majority of Modern Warfare 2 is content to relive past glories. There are two back-to-back missions that replicate the original Modern Warfare’s Death From Above, in which you rain down all manner of high-caliber ammunition from a circling gunship. Another sees you storm a cargo ship in an echo of Crew Expendable, while yet another is – of course – the copied homework of All Ghillied Up, right down to the hiding in the grass as enemies walk by. Then there’s the multiple references to 2019’s Clean House, which have you slowly walking up stairs behind two allies whenever the opportunity arises. It makes for something that feels a bit like a ‘Best Of’ album performed by a different, less confident band.

That’s not to say there’s no merit or fun in these covers. The gunship missions demand much more precision than their inspiration thanks to targets often being close to civilians, and there's a more deliberate feeling in how you use each of the plane’s three ammunition types. Dark Waters, the cargo ship level, makes great use of moving cover as containers slip and slide across the wet deck. And Recon By Fire, the sniping mission, provides you with a backpack filled with various tools that provide a greater degree of tactical choice when it comes to clearing buildings. Will you breach the doors with explosives and fight inside, or drop a tear gas grenade down a ventilation shaft to force your enemies out into the open?

I would have liked to have seen that backpack system used across the entire campaign. While I believe that Call of Duty’s strengths are firmly in linear scenario design, Recon By Fire demonstrates Infinity Ward absolutely has the ability to weave some choice into encounters. But it's sadly just one of a number of mechanics that feel included to be a momentary novelty rather than the basis of something richer. It’s joined by an armor plate system that’s used for a single mission, seemingly as a nod to Warzone rather than for any tactical benefit. Had both mechanics been woven into the fabric of the campaign as a whole, then the moment-to-moment could potentially have been elevated with a layer of micro decisions. Maybe that would have made fighting those groups of bullet sponges more pleasant.

Which is your favourite Call of Duty series?

As a final note, Modern Warfare 2’s campaign is also a little buggier than I’d expect of a Call of Duty. Performance is consistently slick, but while playing on PlayStation 5 I have seen occasional texture pop-in on larger maps, and ugly low-res textures on some elements like water. I also encountered a save corruption bug at the final checkpoint of the last mission which triggered a hard crash every time it loaded, and so I was forced to replay the mission from the start. These are by no means game breaking, but are minor irritants all the same.

Call of Duty’s shooting is once again in a prestige class of its own, which means Modern Warfare 2’s campaign always manages to operate on a minimum quality bar that delivers a satisfying punch. But beyond each thunderous pull of the trigger is an underwhelming story and level designs that are too concerned with replicating the successes of previous campaigns rather than embracing its own good ideas for more than a single mission apiece. In the areas it does innovate it almost always stumbles, although there does remain some enjoyment to be taken in its momentary flashes of inspiration. Overall, though, this is sadly a lackluster follow-up to Modern Warfare 2019’s refined take on a Call of Duty campaign, and an experience that’s already fading in my memory.

Now Playing: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Full Break Out | Summer Game Fest June 2022

Activision showed us an early preview of this mission during a presentation held by Infinity Ward ahead of Modern Warfare 2's June 8 reveal . On the surface, Dark Water looks like a typical Call of Duty mission, but the level features a section with a ship in motion and shifting cover to add a little variation to the combat in Modern Warfare 2's campaign. According to Infinity Ward, Dark Water is just one of Modern Warfare 2's missions meant to showcase the studio's plan to bring a fresh take or add new elements to some of Call of Duty's most popular level types.

In addition to Dark Water, we were shown a few other campaign missions, where we learned about some of the new movement mechanics and A.I. advancements coming to Call of Duty. Here we break down everything we learned about Modern Warfare 2's campaign and multiplayer .

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the sequel to 2019's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, a reboot of the original Modern Warfare trilogy that shares many characters but is not set in the same continuity. Infinity Ward art director Joel Emslie has previously called it the studio's "magnum opus," which is quite confident considering the acclaim the original Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2 received. We'll know for sure when Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launches on October 28 across PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, and PS5. The game will be $70, including on PC . Call of Duty: Warzone's sequel will be coming at a later date, as well.

I like the look of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's fancy new water tech

Server side waves.

Last night I was shown a pre-recorded presentation in which various developers at Infinity Ward spoke enthusiastically about this year's upcoming shooter Modern Warfare 2 and the various changes it makes to 2019's largely successful Modern Warfare soft reboot. I can't bring you hands-on impressions of the multiplayer, unfortunately (with the lifting of this evening's embargo there will be plenty of videos featuring multiplayer impressions for you to check out), but I can write about something Infinity Ward repeatedly discussed during its presentation: its fancy new water tech.

We've been here before. I remember flying to the US to preview Infinity Ward's ill-fated Call of Duty: Ghosts , widely considered one of the worst Call of Duty games ever made, and seeing "advanced" fish AI during an underwater level. Of course, the fish had no meaningful bearing on Call of Duty's gameplay. Water in Modern Warfare 2, however, will, Infinity Ward insists.

I was shown pre-alpha gameplay footage of the Amsterdam-set campaign mission Wet Work, which did a good job of showing off Modern Warfare 2's new water. I'm not aware of all the video games ever to have done water well (the games that spring to mind are The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker and Sea of Thieves), but to be fair to Infinity Ward, Modern Warfare 2's water looks wonderful. Captain Price and co bob about as waves ebb and flow. Swimming makes little splashes. There's a foam simulation. Boats produce a wake. You can do stealth takedowns from the water, if you swim quietly towards an enemy who's standing on a platform above you. Drag them down then Call of Duty stab for the win.

Cover image for YouTube video

Things get even more impressive when you dive underwater. Water refracts light and gets murkier the deeper you swim, which makes visibility something to content with. The tech wizards at Infinity Ward have simulated how water slows the speed of a bullet, which means you do less damage if you're shooting someone from underwater or shooting someone who is underwater. There are some restrictions while underwater: you can only shoot pistols and melee (as you emerge you can aim down sights with any weapon, moving with the water to take shots). I can already imagine underwater shenanigans when I get my hands on the game. Why would you swim? Based on the Wet Work gameplay I saw, it's a useful escape and evasion tactic. It's also useful for stealth. I suspect it'll be the same in multiplayer.

Speaking of multiplayer, the new water tech extends to all facets of Modern Warfare 2: campaign, multiplayer and spec ops. You'd expect the new boats (there's a big armoured patrol boat with a manned turret on the front and back) and amphibious vehicles to work in water, but some killstreaks do, too. Wheelson, one of my favourite killstreaks from 2019 Modern Warfare, can now swim. I am genuinely looking forward to hunting down underwater enemies with everyone's favourite remote-controlled tank.

Each piece of equipment properly interacts with water, too. The flash bang has buoyancy and rises to the surface. Similarly, the smoke grenade rises to the surface to billow from there. When the proximity mine hits the water it deploys a little floaty so it stays on the surface and becomes a landmine for boats - and even flows with the current. Infinity Ward is trying to make water a fun place to play rather than a sand trap.

The water tech also extends to the new Warzone, dubbed Warzone 2.0 by Activision and due out this year. Mercifully, this is a shared experience with Modern Warfare 2. One of the big issues Warzone ran up against was incorporating elements of subsequent Call of Duty games that were set in different eras and built on different engines. Modern Warfare 2 and the new Warzone gleefully hold hands, which should make for a better back and forth experience. Activision describes the new Warzone as an "extension" of the Modern Warfare 2 universe, with connected gameplay built on one unified COD engine. No-one expects new Modern Warfare 2 guns will break the new Warzone, but will weapons from next year's Call of Duty - if there is a new Call of Duty next year ?

presentation modern warfare 2

Without hands-on time with Modern Warfare 2, I can't tell you how it's shaping up, but my drive-by impressions are that it definitely looks like a Modern Warfare sequel, and as a big fan of 2019's Modern Warfare ( I called on Activision to give Modern Warfare a proper next-gen update and a full-blown second year after the company moved on to Black Ops Cold War), that will probably be enough. Modern Warfare feels fantastic in your hands, with guns that pack a real punch and an attention to detail I don't think has been bettered by the series since. All that good stuff has reported for duty here, which is what you'd expect from Infinity Ward.

Other good stuff Infinity Ward mentioned during its presentation: dolphin diving from previous Call of Duty games makes an appearance - IW says it's a solid escape mechanic and fun traversal manoeuvre. (Yes, you can dive through windows.) The idea here is the player will have a choice to make when the shit hits the fan: slide so you can keep your gun up, or hit the deck to quickly get out of gunfire.

There's a new ledge hang move that lets you peek and shoot with pistols. You can jump onto a helicopter, hold on, then pull yourself up into the enemy onboard. You can now mantle and ledge hang out of your parachute. Platforming appears to be a bigger deal with Modern Warfare 2, which lets you hoist yourself up and grab again. This should fuel exploration.

In vehicles you can now lean out of windows to shoot, even as the driver, and mantle up onto the roof. Attacking vehicles, you can blow the bloody doors off and even blow out tyres, affecting the driver's ability to steer. (You can repair damaged vehicles to get back on the road.) Here's a cool detail: all vehicles have husks now, which means once destroyed a vehicle becomes a physics object that stays in the world rather than disappears.

presentation modern warfare 2

Modern Warfare 2 maps come in two forms: large, exploratory battle maps, and 6v6 traditional core maps. As someone who found it difficult to detect danger in Modern Warfare's cluttered multiplayer maps , I am encouraged by Infinity Ward's description of its 6v6 maps, which are "trending towards a little bit smaller, a little bit tighter, a little bit cleaner reads, a little bit less climbey because it contrasts well with having so much of that in the big maps".

As for modes, the likes of Team Deathmatch, Domination and Ground War return. Knockout replaces Gunfight - it's 6v6 with one life and revives. There are just three positions the bag you need to grab can spawn in, with a win condition of eliminating all enemy players or holding the bag as the minute-long timer ends.

The new Prisoner Rescue mode brings breaching and sieging gameplay to Modern Warfare. To win you need to save a group of prisoners by carrying them to an extraction point, or kill the defending team. Someone at IW is a fan of Rainbow Six Siege, I reckon.

Infinity Ward's presentation was intentionally vague, so there's a lot I don't know about Modern Warfare 2. The developer teased "more to come" on many new features. There's talk that AI will play a big role in not only Modern Warfare 2 but Warzone 2.0, with an impressive ratio of 300 AI soldiers to every 100 real players. There's new squadmate positioning and enemy patterns to NPCs, and even civilian movement to contend with. The AI dynamically reacts to your choices, Infinity Ward says, but I haven't seen any of this in action yet.

presentation modern warfare 2

There's no getting away from the fact Modern Warfare 2 is being revealed - and will no doubt release - during a very real and very modern war. Russia's horrifying invasion of Ukraine isn't going anywhere any time soon, and within that context Activision is releasing a war video game that aims to be as realistic as possible. I've always considered Call of Duty multiplayer to be essentially a video game version of paint ball and enjoyed it as such, but when your campaign looks and sounds a lot like the footage coming out of Ukraine as I'm typing this now, Call of Duty makes for uncomfortable viewing.

"We're telling fictional stories, it's fictional everything, but it is inspired by real-world military events that shape the world we live in," Infinity Ward boss Patrick Kelly said during the presentation, barely scratching the surface of this debate.

"This is a sensitive one for me, because with the events going on in the world, the war in Ukraine, it's important to me we be sensitive on this one."

Four months from Modern Warfare 2's release, it looks like it's in good shape, but it's hard to make any definitive statements. I'm looking forward to it, as I have with previous games in the series ever since I fell in love with Sledgehammer's Call of Duty: WW2. I like the look of the new water tech and the implications it has for gameplay. I'll wet my beak, for sure.

How to slide in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Image of Jalen Lopez

Movement is critical in Call of Duty . Outmanuevering enemies can help you easily win gunfights while knowing the best ways to navigate a map can make the difference between life and death. You can also pull off a few exciting moves once you know what you’re doing that can stun enemies in their tracks.

Every CoD title has different abilities, like diving or sliding, to help players move around. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has kept the sliding mechanic players know and love. New players might need to become more familiar with the sliding mechanic, so here is a quick explainer of how to slide in Modern Warfare 2.

Sliding in Modern Warfare 2

Sliding is simple. All you need to do is hold down the crouch button while sprinting, which is B on Xbox, O on Playstation, and C on PC. If done correctly, you’ll slide a short distance. This is a great way to get to cover or to surprise enemies. You can shoot while sliding, so consider this a valid option in gunfights.

Some players prefer using different buttons to slide, and the MW2 options offer a few ways to change your button layout. A popular alternative to the default button layout is tactical, which swaps the slide button with the melee button. Experiment with your settings to find the perfect way to slide in style.

Those are the basics of sliding in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare I I, so get out there and slide into battle. Just remember your enemies have the same ability, and can use it to their advantage as well.

Plus, get extra time to achieve platform-specific accolades.

presentation modern warfare 2

MULTIPLAYER AND SPECIAL OPS OVERVIEW

presentation modern warfare 2

Prior to the full game release, expect this blog to bring you a full breakdown of all Multiplayer-specific features, including maps, modes, and launch Playlists; tips on creating a Loadout; and more.

presentation modern warfare 2

We highly recommend completing all three Special Ops missions with three stars and have at least one Kit leveled up to Tier 5 before Raids, a direct continuation of the Campaign, are introduced to Special Ops later in Season 01.

presentation modern warfare 2

At launch, there is more to Modern Warfare II than the traditional Military Ranks.

Prior to Season 01, which will feature a new Battle Pass system and Seasonal Prestige, players will have access to the following Progression systems:

  • Military Ranks: From Levels 1–55, unlock all Weapon Platforms, Multiplayer Loadout Items, and Special Ops Kits.

Rozlin “Roze” Helms: An American Army Ranger, who was formerly contracted by the Jackals to eliminate Al Qatala in Africa, and Shadow Company to seek order in Verdansk. Sami “Zero” Zakaria: An Egyptian Task Force 777 Operator, part of the counter-terrorism unit within the country’s premier El-Sa’ka Forces.
