मरीज़ो की आपातकालीन स्थिति में मैं सर्वप्रथम उस मरीज़ को प्राथमिकता देता। चाहे कितनी ही देर रात को मुझे रोगियों के इमरजेंसी कॉल्स आये, मैं हमेशा उनके सेवा में हाज़िर हो जाता।

इस तरीके के कार्य की हम घोर शब्दों में निंदा करते है। इस तरीके के कार्य डॉक्टर सिर्फ पैसे कमाने के लिए करते है। धन -संपत्ति हर व्यक्ति जुटाने की कोशिश करता है। मगर इस प्रकार की धोखेदारी मरीज़ो के साथ निंदनीय है।

कभी कभी डॉक्टर अपने वेतन वृद्धि के लिए हड़ताल पर चले जाते है। फिर उस समय मरीज़ो को कई दिक्कतों का सामना करना पड़ता है। हड़ताल के वक़्त रोगियों का इलाज़ ठीक प्रकार से नहीं होता है। ऐसे डॉक्टर सिर्फ अपने बारे में सोचते है और भूल जाते है कि डॉक्टर बनने से पूर्व उन्होंने क्या शपथ लि थी|

पसंदगी का कारण.

आज हमारे देश में हैजा, मलेरिया, चेचक जैसे रोग तो कम हो गए हैं, लेकिन दूसरी अनेक बीमारियों ने सिर उठा लिया है। खाँसी, सर्दी, बुखार, सिरदर्द आदि रोगों के कारण असंख्य लोग परेशान रहते हैं। टी. बी. या टाइफॉइड, डायाबिटीस और कैंसर जैसे भयंकर रोग भी इस देश में बहुतायत से पाए जाते हैं। देश का गरीब वर्ग इन बीमारियों से परेशान हो रहा है। मैं चाहता हूँ कि मैं डॉक्टर बनकर इन रोगियों का इलाज करूँ, उन्हें रोगमुक्त करूँ और इस तरह मुझे जनसेवा का सुनहरा अवसर मिले।

मैं डॉक्टर बनकर क्या करूँगा?

आज हमारे गाँवों को डॉक्टरों की बहुत आवश्यकता है। इसलिए मैं अपने गाँव में ही अपना दवाखाना खोलूँगा। आज के नए डॉक्टर शहरों में ही रहना पसंद करते हैं, लेकिन मैं तो गरीबों की सेवा करना चाहता हूँ। अत: गाँव का डॉक्टर बनने में मुझे जरा भी हिचकिचाहट न होगी। अपने कुशल इलाज से मैं अपने गाँव के लोगों के दुख का भार हल्का करूँगा। वे मेरे पास रोते-कराहते आएँगे और हँसते-मुस्कराते जाएँगे। उनकी उस खुशी में ही मुझे अपनी खुशी मिल जाएगी।

डॉक्टर बनकर मैं केवल अपने दवाखाने में ही बैठा नहीं रहूँगा। मैं गाँव के लोगों में घुलमिलकर उनमें वैज्ञानिक समझदारी उत्पन्न करूँगा। मैं उन्हें सफाई का महत्त्व समझाऊँगा और आरोग्य की वैज्ञानिक जानकारी कराऊँगा। अशिक्षा और अस्वच्छता के कारण ही तो हमारे स्वर्ग जैसे गाँव अनेक बीमारियों के कारण नरक-से बने हुए हैं। मैं लोगों को इस नरक से बाहर निकालूँगा।

आर्थिक दृष्टि से भी डॉक्टर बनना बुरा नहीं है। इस व्यवसाय में न घाटे का डर है, न तेजी-मंदी की संभावना । लेकिन केवल पैसे कमाना ही मेरा उद्देश्य नहीं होगा। मेरे लिए डॉक्टर बनना दीनबंधु बनने का मार्ग है। मैं यह कभी नहीं भुलूँगा कि डॉक्टरी एक ऐसा व्यवसाय जिसमें धनलाभ के साथ-साथ जनसेवा का आनंद भी मिलता है ! इसलिए एक आदर्श डॉक्टर की तरह मैं ग्रामीणों को स्वास्थ्य-लाभ कराना अपना पहला कर्तव्य मानूँगा।

सचमुच, डॉक्टर बनना मेरे लिए बड़े गौरव और आनंद की बात होगी। क्या जनसेवा के द्वारा प्रभुसेवा करने की मेरी यह आकांक्षा पूर्ण हो सकेगी?

मेरे अवचेतन मन के किसी कोने में यह बात समायी हुई थी कि दूर-दराज के देहातों में जीवन की सामान्य सुविधाएँ न होने के कारण पर्याप्त धन खर्च करने के बाद एम.बी.बी.एस. की डिग्री प्राप्त करनेवाले, नागरिक जीवन की सुख- सुविधाओं के अभ्यस्त डाक्टर गाँवों में नहीं जाना चाहते। अतः इन पिछड़े क्षेत्रों में चिकित्सा के साधनों का अभाव है, रोगग्रस्त होकर बहुत से गाँववाले अकाल मृतु के ग्रास बनते हैं। दुसरे, देहातों में रहनेवाले निम-हकीम, झाड़-फूँक करनेवाले, ओझा अनपढ़-अशिक्षित-अन्धविश्वासी भोले लोगों को उल्लू बनाकर अपनी जेबें भरते हैं। कोई बच जाता है तो अपनी हिकमत का डंका पिटते हैं और यदि मर जाता है तो उसके लिए भगवान या भाग्य को दोष देते है। अवचेतन मन में पैठी हुई इस बात का प्रभाव यह पड़ा कि मैंने कल्पना में देखा कि मैंने एक पिछड़े गाँव में रेणु के उपन्यास “मैला आँचल” के डॉ. प्रशान्त की तरह अपना क्लीनिक खोला है। उसका फर्नीचर सामान्य पर रोगियों के लिए सुखदायक है। स्वागत-कक्ष में एक नर्स बैठी है। वह रोगियों को बारी-बारी से जाने के लिए नम्बर लिखी पर्ची देती है। उसके ओठों पर खेलती मधुर मुस्कान तथा मृदु वाणी से रोगी का चित प्रफुल्ल हो उठता है क्योंकि उन्हें यहाँ फीकी या टेढ़ी भौंहें देखने को नहीं मिलतीं।

पर्ची लेकर जब रोगी मेरे कक्ष में प्रवेश करता है तो मैं भी मुस्कराकर उसका स्वागत करता हूँ, उसके सामने पड़ी कुर्सी पर बैठने को कहता हूँ, उसे अपना रोग बताने के लिए कहता हूँ, आवश्यकता हुई तो उसकी केस-हिस्ट्री लिख देता हूँ। उसकी हर बात ध्यान से सुनता हूँ, उसकी नाड़ी देखकर आवश्यकता के अनुसार फेफड़े या हृदय का परीक्षण कर, थर्मामीटर से उसके शरीर का तापमान मापकर या रक्तचाप देखकर उसे दवाई का पर्चा देता हूँ। उसे क्या-क्या सावधानी बरतनी है, किन बातों से बचना है आदि हिदायतें देता हूँ। इस पर भी यदि वह कोई प्रश्न करता है तो उसका उत्तर देता हूँ। यदि वह बातूनी हुआ या बेकार के प्रश्न दुहराता है तो कठोर स्वर में उसे चले जाने के लिए कह देता हूँ।

यदि कोई रोगी इतना अस्वस्थ हो जाता है कि मेरे क्लीनिक में नहीं आ सकता तो मैं उसके घर जाकर रोगी का परीक्षण उसी तरह करता हूँ जिस प्रकार क्लीनिक में आये रोगी का। मेरा दृष्टिकोण धन कमाने का नहीं बल्कि सेवा करने का है। अतः मैं रोगी को आत्मविश्वास में लेकर उसे रोग की सही स्थिति बता देता हूँ, कुछ छिपाता भी नहीं और न बीमारी को बढ़ा-चढ़ा कर उसे भयभीत या आतंकित करता हूँ। आज डाक्टर कभी तो अनुभवहीन होने के कारण, तो कभी कमाई के लिए तरह-तरह के परीक्षण-रक्त, पेशाब, मल, थूक आदि का परीक्षण करवाने का आदेश देते हैं तो अनावश्यक होते हुए भी तथाकथित विशेषज्ञों के पास जाकर उनसे परामर्श लेने, उनका इलाज करने की सलाह देते हैं क्योंकि इन विषेशज्ञों से उनका कमीशन बंधा होता है। मैं ऐसा कभी नहीं करूँगा क्योंकि यह छल है, कपट है, बेईमानी है और इस पवित्र पेशे को कलंकित करती है। मैं अनिवार्य स्थिति में ही परीक्षण करवाने की सलाह दूंगा और किसी दुसरे सचमुच विषेशज्ञ के पास जाने का परामर्श दूँगा।

फ़ीस तो मैं लूँगा क्योंकि मुझे बाप-दादा से कोई जायदाद या धन-राशि नहीं मिली है परन्तु मेरी फ़ीस इतनी होगी जितनी सामान्य जन दे सकता है। यदि कोई उतनी भी फीस नहीं डे सकता तो मैं उसका निःशुल्क इलाज कर दूंगा और यदि संभव हुआ तो उसके लिए औषधियाँ भी उपलब्ध करा दूँगा।

सारांश यह कि मैं डाक्टरी के पेशे को जन-सेवा का पवित्र कार्य समझ क्र पूरी निष्ठा एवं परोपकार की भावना से इस कार्य को पूरा करूँगा। मधुर वाणी, सद्व्यवहार, सहानुभूति, संवेदनशीलता इस सेवा-कार्य के अभिन्न अंग होंगे।

काश मैं डॉक्टर होता!

संसार में अनेक प्रकार के आजीविका के साधन हैं। उनमें से कई साधन तो मानवीय दृष्टि से बड़े ही संवेदनशील हुआ करते हैं जिनका सीधा सम्बन्ध मनुष्य की भावनाओं, उसके प्राणों तथा सारे जीवन के साथ हुआ करता है। डॉक्टर का धन्धा कुछ इसी प्रकार का पवित्र, मानवीय संवेदनाओं से युक्त, प्राण-दान और जीवन-रक्षा की दृष्टि से ईश्वर के बाद दूसरा परन्तु कभी-कभी तो ईश्वर के समान ही माना जाता है। क्योंकि ईश्वर तो मनुष्य को केवल जन्म देकर संसार में भेजने का काम करता है जबकि डॉक्टर के कन्धों पर उसके सारे जीवन की रक्षा का भार पड़ा होता है।

इन बातों को ध्यान में रखकर मैं प्रायः सोचा करता हूं कि यदि मैं डॉक्टर होता , तो? यह तो सत्य ही है कि डॉक्टर का व्यवसाय बड़ा ही पवित्र हुआ करता है। पहले तो लोग यहां तक कहते थे डॉक्टर केवल सेवा करने के लिए होता है, न कि पैसा कमाने के लिए। मैंने ऐसे कई डॉक्टरों के विषय में सुन रखा है जिन्होंने मानव-सेवा में अपना सारा जीवन लगा दिया तथा मरीजों को इसलिए नहीं मरने दिया क्योंकि उनके पास फीस देने या दवाई खरीदने के लिए पैसे नहीं थे। धन्य हैं ऐसे डॉक्टर! यदि मैं डॉक्टर होता तो मैं भी ऐसा करने का प्रयत्न करता।

सामान्यतया मैंने ऐसा पढ़ा तथा सुना है कि दूर-दराज के देहातों में डॉक्टरी-सेवा का बड़ा अभाव है। वहां तरह-तरह की बीमारियां फैलती रहती हैं जिनके परिणामस्वरूप अनेक लोग बिना दवा के मर जाते हैं। वहां देहातों में डॉक्टरों के स्थान पर नीम-हकीमों का बोलबाला है या फिर झाड़-फूक करने वाले ओझा लोग बीमारी का भी इलाज करते हैं। ये नीम-हकीम तथा ओझा लोग इन देहाती लोगों को जो अशिक्षित, अनपढ़ व निर्धन हैं, उल्लू बनाकर दोनों हाथों से लूटते भी हैं और अपनी अज्ञानता से उनकी जान तक ले लेते हैं। यदि मैं डॉक्टर होता तो आवश्यकता पड़ने पर ऐसे ही देहातों में जाकर वहां के निवासियों की तरह-तरह की बीमारियों से रक्षा करता। साथ-ही-साथ उनको इन नीम-हकीम तथा ओझाओं से भी छुटकारा दिलाने का प्रयत्न करता।

आज के युग में प्रायः डॉक्टर अपने लिए धन-सम्पत्ति जुटाने में लगे रहते हैं। इसके लिए वे शहरों में रहकर बेचारे रोगियों को दोनों हाथों से लूटना प्रारम्भ कर देते हैं जो डॉक्टरी पेशे पर एक बदनुमा दाग है। ऐसा नहीं है कि हमें अपने और अपने परिवार के लिए धन-सम्पत्ति या सुख-सुविधाओं की आवश्यकता नहीं है। सभी को इसकी आवश्यकता होती है, इसीलिए मैं भी धन-सम्पत्ति इकट्ठा तो करता परन्तु सच्ची सेवा द्वारा मानव-जाति को स्वस्थ रखना मेरे जीवन का ध्येय होता। यही डॉक्टरी पेशे की सबसे बड़ी उपलब्धि है।

डॉक्टर स्वभाव बहुत ही निर्मल और उदार किस्म का होता है क्योंकि अगर वह गुस्सा करेगा तो रोगी को आघात पहुंच सकता है जिससे लोगी और बीमार पड़ सकता है इसलिए डॉक्टर हमेशा शांत रहता है इसी स्वभाव और डॉक्टर की बेहतरीन दक्षता के कारण लोग इन पर बहुत अधिक विश्वास करते है।

डॉक्टर को समाज में हमेशा सम्मान दिया जाता है और एक अच्छी नजर से देखा जाता है। पुराने जमाने से लेकर अब तक चिकित्सा पद्धति में बहुत अधिक बदलाव आ चुका है।

जिसके कारण एवं सभी बीमारियों की अलग-अलग डॉक्टर होते हैं जो कि एक विशेष बीमारी को सही करने में पूरी तरह से दक्ष होते है। इसी कारण आधे चिकित्सा पद्धति में इतना विस्तार हो पाया है साथ ही बीमारी से बनने वाले रोगियों में भी कमी आई है।

बीमारियों पर काबू पाने का पूरा श्रेय डॉक्टरों को ही दिया जाता है क्योंकि वही है जो कि दिन रात लैब में बैठकर नई-नई दवाइयाँ बनाते है।

लेकिन जैसे-जैसे समय बदल रहा है कुछ डॉक्टरों के स्वभाव में भी बदलाव आ रहा है वे दिन प्रतिदिन लालची होते जा रहे हैं और अपना स्वार्थ सिद्ध करने के लिए रोगियों को महंगी महंगी दवाइयां देते है। जिसके कारण काफी रोगी इलाज नहीं करा पाते है और उन्हें मृत्यु का सामना करना पड़ता है।

आज डॉक्टर के पेशे को पैसे कमाने का धंधा बना दिया गया है जिसके कारण अमीरों को तो कुछ फर्क नहीं पड़ा लेकिन गरीब लोगों की हालत खराब हो गई है।

एक छोटी सी बीमारी होने पर भी गरीब आदमी की पूरे महीने भर की कमाई उस बीमारी को सही कराने में चली जाती है। लेकिन सभी डॉक्टर ऐसे नहीं होते हैं आज भी दुनिया में कई ऐसे डॉक्टर है जो कि बिना किसी शुल्क के रोगियों को देखते है और उन्हीं दवाइयाँ प्रदान करते है।

सही मायनों में डॉक्टर का यही कर्तव्य होता है कि वह अपने पास आए रोगी को कम से कम रुपए में स्वस्थ करने में पूरी सहायता करें। ऐसे डॉक्टर ही प्रशंसा के पात्र होते है इन्हीं के कारण आज भी लोग डॉक्टरों पर अपने से ज्यादा विश्वास करते है।

और हमें यह भी मानना पड़ेगा कि डॉक्टर के कारण ही आज हम इतनी बीमारी से घिरे होने के बावजूद स्वस्थ है। इसीलिए समाज में डॉक्टर होना एक गर्व की बात होती है।

डॉक्टरों को समाज में सम्मान की दृष्टि से देखा जाता है । हमारे देश में कई चिकित्सा, आयुर्वेद और ऐलोपैथी के अलग-अलग डॉक्टर होते हैं । डॉक्टर का कार्य रोगों का निदान करना है । जब भी हम बीमार पड़ते हैं, हमें डॉक्टर की शरण लेनी पड़ती है । बुखार से लेकर गंभीर रोगों में डॉक्टर ही हमारी पीड़ा दूर करता है ।

एक अच्छे डॉक्टर के लिए अच्छा वेतन होना आवश्यक है । उस का स्वभाव मृदुल होना चाहिए । डॉक्टर अपने रोगी को दिलासा और विश्वास देता है । अपनी मुस्कान से उसका कष्ट दूर करता है । डॉक्टर का दृष्टिकोण केवल पैसा बनाना ही नहीं होना चाहिए ।

जो लोग एलोपेथी के डॉक्टरों की फीस नहीं चुका सकते और महंगी औषधियां नहीं खरीद सकते, उन्हें चहिए कि वे होम्योपैथी या आयुर्वेद के डॉक्टर के पास जायें । इन डॉक्टरों की फीस कम और औषधियां कम महँगी हैं । अनेक डॉक्टर धर्मार्थ औषधालयों में रोगियों की सेवा करते हैं । वे बहुत कम वेतन लेते हैं । ऐसे डॉक्टर प्रशंसा के पात्र हैं । वे सही अर्थो में मानवता के सेवक हैं ।

डॉक्टर वह व्यक्ति होता है जो बुखार से लेकर बड़े गंभीर रोगों का इलाज कर मनुष्य की रक्षा करता है। हर व्यक्ति के जीवन में उतार चढ़ाव आते रहते है। दुषित वातावरण और व्यस्त जीवनशैली के कारण हम बीमार पड़ जाते है। कई बार तो लोग टी.बी., कैंसर आदि जैसे रोंगो का भी शिकार हो जाते है तब केवल डॉक्टर ही होता है जो ऑपरेशन करके हमें जीवनदान देता है।

डॉक्टर अपना पूरा जीवन इंसानियत को संमर्पित कर देते है। उन्हें घंटो तक काम करना होता है। कभी कभी सीमा पर घायल हुए सैनिकों का इलाज करने में पूरा पूरा दिन ही लग जाता है। सैनिक हमें दुश्मनों से बचाते है और डॉक्टर रोगों से। कई बार रोगी की स्थिति गंभीर होने पर ये खाना पीना और सोना सब छोड़ देतै है और उसकी सेवा में लग जाते है। डॉक्टर का स्थान समाज में सम्मानजनक है।

डॉक्टर अलग अलग छेत्रों में कार्य करते है जैसे कि ऐलयोपैथिक,होमयोपैथिक और आयुर्वेदिक। डॉक्टर ऑपरेशन के दौरान अपनी मुस्कान से रोगी को हिम्मत देते है। भारत के चिकित्सक की देशों में भी माँग है। भारत में लगभग 300 मैडिकल कॉलेज है जहाँ से हर साल 30000 डॉक्टर बाहर निकलते है चो कि अपने शहर ,गाँव के अस्पताल में कार्य करते है या फिर अपना क्लीनिक खोल लेते है।

आजकल बहुत से कलिनिकों में अर्ध ग्यान वाले डॉक्टर बैठे है जो कि अपने अधुरे ग्यान से अनजाने में मानव की जान ले लेते है। बड़े बड़े अस्पतालों में बैठने वाले डॉक्टर आजकल पैसे कमाने में लगे हुए है जिससे गरीब आदमी उनकी फीस नहीं दे सकता और इलाज न होने से तड़प तड़प कर मर जाता है। छोटे रोगों का इलाज हम किसी भी डॉक्टर से करवा सकते है पर बड़ी बिमारी के लिए विशेषग डॉक्टर होते है जो शरीर के एक हिस्से की पूरी जानकारी रखते है और उसका इलीज करने में कौशल होते है। होमयोपैथिक और आयुर्वेदिक इलाद सस्ते होते है इनमें डॉक्टर की फीस कम होती है। यही लोग है जो सही रूप मैं मानवता की सेवा कर रहे है। डॉक्टर को पैसों के पीछे नहीं भागना चाहिए। सरकार ने गरीब लोगो के इलाज के लिए सरकारी अस्पताल खोले है और अच्छे डॉक्टर भी नियुक्त किए है ताकि उनका इलाज सही से और कम पैसों में हो सके। डॉक्टर का संपूर्ण जीवन मानवता की सेवा करने में व्यतीत होता है। वह अपने पूरे जीवन में मानव की पीड़ा रो महसूस करता है।

लक्ष्य हमारे जीवन में बहुत महत्वपूर्ण है। लक्ष्य के बिना जीवन व्यर्थ और दिशाहीन है। एक बार लक्ष्य निर्धारित हो जाने पर, मानव दिमाग लक्ष्य प्राप्त करने के लिए काम करना शुरू कर देता है। जीवन में मेरा लक्ष्य डॉक्टर बनना है। डॉक्टर बनना बहुत आसान काम नहीं हैं। मेरे लक्ष्य को प्राप्त करने के लिए मुझे शुरूआत से ही कड़ी मेहनत करने की जरूरत है। मुझे विज्ञान विषय में बहुत रूचि है और मानव शरीर के बारे में भी अधिक जानने में गहरी रूचि हैं।

संसार में कई प्रकार के व्यवसाय हैं, उद्योग-धन्धे हैं, नौकरियाँ और कार्य-व्यापार हैं। उनमें से कई बड़े ही मानवीय माने जाते हैं। यों तो सभी का सम्बन्ध मनुष्य के साथ ही हुआ करता है; पर कुछ कार्य-व्यापार इस तरह के भी हैं कि जिन की स्थिति मानवीय दृष्टि से बड़ी ही संवेदनशील हुआ करती है। उसका सीधा सम्बन्ध मनुष्य की भावनाओं, मनुष्य के प्राणों और सारे जीवन के साथ हुआ करता है। डॉक्टर का धन्धा कुछ इसी प्रकार का ही पवित्र, मानवीय संवेदनाओं से युक्त, प्राण-दान और जीवन-रक्षा की दृष्टि से ईश्वर के बाद दूसरा, बल्कि कुछ लोगों की दृष्टि में ईश्वर के समान ही हुआ करता है। मेरे विचार में ईश्वर तो केवल जन्म देकर संसार में भेज दिया करता है। उसके बाद मनुष्य-जीवन की रक्षा का सारा उत्तरदायित्व वह डॉक्टरों के हाथ में सौंप दिया करता है। इस कारण अक्सर मेरे मन-मस्तिष्क में यह प्रश्न उठा करता है कि-यदि मैं डाक्टर होता, तो?

यह सच है कि डॉक्टर का व्यवसाय बड़ा ही पवित्र हुआ करता है। पहले तो यहाँ तक कहा और माना जाता था कि डॉक्टर का पेशा केवल सेवा करने के लिए हुआ करता है, कमाई करने के लिए नहीं ! मैंने ऐसे कई डॉक्टरों की कहानियाँ सुन रखी हैं जिन्होंने मानव-सेवा में सारा जीवन खुद भूखे-प्यासे रह कर बिता दिया, पर किसी बेचारे मरीज को इसलिए नहीं मरने दिया कि उसके पास फीस देने या दवाई खरीदने के लिए पैसे नहीं हैं। यदि मैं डॉक्टर होता, तो ऐसा ही करने की कोशिश करता। किसी भी आदमी को बिना इलाज, बिना दवाई मरने नहीं देता। मैंने यह भी सुन रखा है कि कुछ ऐसे डॉक्टर भी हुए हैं, जिन्होंने अपने बापदादा से प्राप्त की गई सारी सम्पत्ति लोगों की सेवा-सहायता में खर्च कर दी। यदि मैं बापदादा से प्राप्त की गई सम्पत्ति वाला डॉक्टर होता, तो एक-एक पैसा आम आदमियों की सेवासहायता में ही खर्च करता, इसमें शक नहीं।

मैंने सुना और पढ़ा है कि भारत के दूर-दराज के देहातों में डॉक्टरी-सेवा का बड़ा अभाव है, जब कि वहाँ तरह-तरह की बीमारियाँ फैलकर लोगों को आतंकित किये रहती हैं; क्योंकि पढ़े-लिखे वास्तविक डॉक्टर वहाँ जाना नहीं चाहते, इस कारण वहाँ नीम हकीमों की बन आती है या फिर झाड़-फूंक करने वाले ओझा लोग बीमारों का भी इलाज करते हैं। इस तरह नीम हकीम और ओझा बेचारे अनपढ़-अशिक्षित गरीब देहातियों को उल्लू बना कर दोनों हाथों से लूटा तो करते ही हैं, उनके प्राण लेने से भी बाज़ नहीं आते और उनका कोई कुछ भी बिगाड़ नहीं पाता। यदि मैं डॉक्टर होता तो आवश्यकता पड़ने पर ऐसे ही दूर-दराज के देहातों में जाकर लोगों के प्राणों की तरह-तरह की बीमारियों से तो रक्षा करता ही; लोगों को ओझाओं, नीम-हकीमों और तरह-तरह के अन्धविश्वासों से छुटकारा दिलाने का प्रयत्न भी करता। मेरे विचार में अन्धविश्वास भी एक तरह के भयानक रोग ही हैं। इनसे लोगों को छुटकारा दिलाना भी एक बड़ा महत्त्वपूर्ण पुण्य कार्य ही है।

यह ठीक है कि डॉक्टर भी आदमी होता हैं अन्य सभी लोगों के समान उसके मन में भी धन-सम्पत्ति जोडने जीवन की सभी तरह की सुविधाएँ पाने और जुटाने, भौतिक सुख भोगने की इच्छा हो सकती है। इच्छा होनी ही चाहिए और ऐसा होना उसका भी अन्य लोगों की तरह बराबर का अधिकार है। लेकिन इस का यह अर्थ तो नहीं कि वह अपने पवित्र कर्त्तव्य को भुलाये। यह सब पाने के लिए बेचारे रोगियों के रोगों पर परीक्षण करते रह कर दोनों हाथों से उन्हें लूटना और धन बटोरना शुरू कर दे। यदि मैं डॉक्टर होता, तो इस दृष्टि से न तो कभी सोचता और न व्यवहार ही करता। सभी तरह की सुख सुविधाएँ पाने का प्रयत्न ज़रूर करता: पर पर पहले अपने रोगियों को ठीक करने का उचित निदान कर, उन पर तरह-तरह के परीक्षण करके नहीं कि जैसा आजकल बड़े-बड़े डिग्रीधारी डॉक्टर किया करते हैं। अफ़सोस उस समय और भी बढ़ जाता है, जब मैं यह देखता हूँ कि रोग की वास्तविक स्थिति की अच्छी-भली पहचान हो जाने पर भी जब लोग कई तरह के परीक्षणों के लिए ज़ोर देकर रोगियों को इसलिए तथाकथित विशेषज्ञों के पास भेजते हैं कि ऐसा करने पर उन परिचितों-मित्रों की आमदनी तो बढ़े ही भेजने वाले डॉक्टरों को भी अच्छा कमीशन मिल सके। मैं यदि डॉक्टर होता, तो इस तरह की बातों को कभी भूल कर भी बढ़ावा न देता।

मैंने निश्चय कर लिया है कि आगे पढ़-लिख कर डॉक्टर ही बनूँगा। डॉक्टर बन कर उपर्युक्त सभी प्रकार के इच्छित कार्य तो करूँगा ही, कुछ लोगों ने अपनी धाँधलेबाजी द्वारा इस पवित्र और सेवाभावी मानवीय पेशे को बदनाम कर रखा है, कलंकित बना दिया है उस बदनामी और कलंक को धोने की भी हर तरह से कोशिश करूँगा। मेरे विचार में सेवा कर के मानव-जाति को स्वस्थ बनाए रखना ही डॉक्टरी पेशे की सब से बड़ी उपलब्धि है बाकी सभी बातें, सभी तरह के फल और मेवे तो बस आने-जाने हैं। उनके लिए इस पवित्र पेशे का स्तर गिराना, उसके पवित्र आदर्श से धन के लिए गिरना सबसे बड़ी हीनता और अमानवीयता है। इस तरह की बातों से बचकर ही कोई डॉक्टर अपने पेशे की पवित्रता बचाए और बनाए रख सकता है।

मैं अपने जीवन में क्या बनना चाहता हूँ यानि अपनी शिक्षा पूरी करने के बाद मैं क्या बनने का सपना रखता हूँ. मैं विज्ञान का छात्र हूँ भौतिकी, रसायन शास्त्र एवं जीव विज्ञान में मेरी गहरी रूचि हैं.

मेरे घर में एक छोटी सी प्रयोगशाला भी हैं विज्ञान विषय का स्कूल में जो कुछ मुझे पढाया जाता है उसका घर आकर लैब में मैं उसकों दोहराता हूँ.

डॉक्टर के पेशे में ईमानदारी बहुत मायने रखती है बहुत से लोग इसे ताक पर रखकर अपने सपनों को जल्द से जल्द पूरा करने के लिए अंग फरोख्त जैसे अपराधों में लग जाते हैं.

यदि मैं डॉक्टर होता तो इस तरह के राह भ्रमित लोगों में एक मानवीय सोच जगाने का प्रयत्न करता. कम से कम मैं जिस अस्पताल में कार्य करता वहां इस तरह की कोई हरकत नही होने देता, जो इस पेशे को शर्मसार करने वाली हो.

आज भी हमारा देश अपने नागरिकों को पूर्ण रूप से स्वास्थ्य सेवाएं उपलब्ध करवाने में नाकाम रहा हैं. इस कारण दूर दराज के इलाकों में बेरहम डॉक्टर का चोला पहने व्यापारी बैठे है जो गरीब जनता का पैसा लूटकर उन्हें मौत बेचते हैं.

निर्धन लोगों के कोटे की निशुल्क दवाई को वे क्लिनिक वाले से साठ गाठ कर बेच देते है तथा मरीज को दवाई के नाम पर एक लम्बी रसीद थमा दी जाती हैं.

धनाभाव में कई बार लोग महंगी कीमतों की दवाई खरीद पाने में समर्थ नही होते है इस कारण अपनी अस्वस्थता के बावजूद भी चिकित्सालय की ओर नहीं आते हैं.

यदि ऐसे इलाकों में मैं डॉक्टर होता तो इस तरह के जरूरतमद लोगों की मदद के लिए कार्य अवधि से अधिक समय तक अस्पताल में रूककर उनकी मदद करता, तथा असहाय लोगों की मजबूरी का फायदा उठाकर उन्हें लुटने वाले लुटेरों से बचाना का हर संभव प्रयास करता.

हर वर्ष कई छात्र डॉक्टर बनने के लिए कड़ी मेहनत करते है, और वो अपनी तैयारी बहुत जल्द ही शुरु कर देते है। इसके लिए उन्हे अपनी 11वी और 12वी के शैक्षणिक वर्ष मे जीव विज्ञान को विषय के रुप मे चुनाव करना चहिए और उसके लिए उन्हे भावुक होना चाहिए। इस शिक्षा के बाद उन्हे NEET नामक परीक्षा देनी होगी, जिसे अखिल भारतीय पैरामेडिकल टेस्ट के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। इसके बाद कोई भी आसानी से अपने रैंक के अनुसार विभिन्न कालेजों के लिए काउंसलिंग मे भाग ले सकता है।

I would offer free treatment to those people who cannot afford to go to hospitals and are poor. In this way, I would do social work. I would spend my weekends in the service of the poor, the needy and the socially backward people who are suffering from diseases and need treatment and care. I would not work just to earn money. Serving the people would be my first priority to me, and money would only be secondary.

If I were a doctor, I would have helped people during the COVID-19 pandemic. I would have given myself to the service of the people. There were so many people who died during COVID because of not getting treatment. There was a lack of doctors and nurses in the hospitals. I would have isolated myself from my family and treated the patients by staying at the hospital only. I would have spread awareness among the people regarding the cause of the spread of coronavirus and told them how they could save themselves.

If I were a doctor, I would recommend people opt for a healthy lifestyle. I would motivate them to do daily yoga and exercise for at least 30 minutes. People should devote themselves to physical exercise if they want to stay healthy and fit. They should eat healthy food and follow a properly balanced diet. I would recommend people cut down on fast food and street food. I would organise awareness campaigns related to the consumption of alcohol, tobacco, cigarettes, drugs etc. and educate people regarding their harmful effects.

Doctors are considered gods as they bring back life and treat illness. A good doctor is a blessing to society and the country, and that is why I would love to be a doctor.

The rape and murder of a female trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has sent shockwaves throughout the country, with junior doctors organising protests and ceasing work to demand swift justice for the victim.

Last Friday, the brutalised body of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was found in a semi-nude state in the seminar hall of the state-run hospital, putting the campus on the boil and prompting the administration to investigate the matter.

The initial autopsy indicated that the victim was murdered after being sexually assaulted, police said.

So far, the police has arrested Sanjoy Roy, who is an accused in the case, based on acquired CCTV footage. The case has been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by a division bench of the Calcutta High Court amid a nationwide outrage demanding safety and better security for women at workplaces.

A recent report by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reveals a grim picture of crimes against women in India. In 2022, the country recorded 4,45,256 cases, which means 51 cases every hour.

Kolkata doctor rape-murder case highlights: Protests intensify; medics seek justice for victim, law to protect health workers

W est Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on August 16 led a rally demanding death penalty for the main accused in the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College, which triggered massive protests across medical colleges in West Bengal.

The Central government said heads of health institutions will have to file an FIR within six hours in case of an incident of violence against a healthcare worker on duty.

The Indian Medical Association has called for a 24-hour nationwide withdrawal of non-emergency and OPD services on August 17. The organisation also demanded justice for the victim and a central law to protect healthcare workers. Following the call, more medics from public as well as private health facilities joined protests across the country.

Stating that the decision of the health ministry to form a panel for deliberating on a central law to protect healthcare workers as “too little and too late”, IMA chief Dr R V Asokan.

The Calcutta High Court on August 16 flagged the lack of preventive measures to curb the vandalism which occurred at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on the night of August 14. “If 7000 people are to gather, it hard to believe the State police did not know. So many people can’t come walking. This is an absolute failure of State machinery,” said the Bench.

Colleagues involved in crime, parents tell CBI

The parents of the woman doctor, who was raped and murdered inside the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last week, have told the CBI that a few interns and physicians of the same medical establishment were involved in the crime, an officer said on Friday (August 16, 2024).

The parents also provided the Central agency, which is conducting the probe into the case on an order of the Calcutta High Court, with names of those who they suspect to be associated with their daughter’s killing in the State-run hospital.

At least 25 arrested for vandalism at RG Kar hospital; High Court slams State machinery

BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia on Friday called INDIA bloc leaders “political vultures” who speak out on crimes against women as per their political convenience.

Speaking at a press conference at the BJP state office, Bhatia targeted West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the rape and murder of a junior doctor in a hospital in Kolkata.

Bhatia termed Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Manish Sisodia, Uddhav Thackeray and other leaders of INDIA bloc “political vultures” and said they should rise above their vote bank politics and “break their silence” on such heinous crimes.

“This silence will cost the INDI alliance dearly. These people are not politicians or public leaders, they are political vultures who speak out on crimes against sisters and daughters after seeing which state government is there,” he said.

Bhatia alleged law and order has collapsed in West Bengal.

The Faculty Association of AIIMS (FAIMS), Delhi, has announced that routine OPD and operation theatre services will be suspended on Saturday to protest against the alleged rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor at a state-run hospital Kolkata and subsequent vandalism at the facility.

Doctors at the Centre-run hospitals Safdarjung and RML will hold a silent protest march, sporting black ribbons, in solidarity with the protesting doctors.

According to it, an urgent general body meeting was held with faculty members, and it was unanimously decided that apart from emergency medical services, including casualty, emergency operation theatre (OT), ICU and wards, no routine hospital services such OPD, OT, laboratory will function on Saturday.

It said that they have ensured that patients scheduled for OPD services tomorrow are informed. Their appointments have been rescheduled to minimise inconvenience, the FAIMS said.

The parents of the doctor, who was allegedly raped-murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last week, told the CBI that several interns and physicians from the hospital might be involved in the crime, an officer said on Friday.

The agency is prioritising the questioning of these individuals and officers from Kolkata Police who were part of the initial investigation. “We have identified at least 30 suspects and have started questioning them,” the officer added.

On Friday, the CBI summoned a house staff member and two post-graduate trainees who were on duty with the doctor the night she was murdered.

The agency also escorted the former hospital principal, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, for questioning.

As a part of their investigation, the CBI officers also took the arrested accused for a reconstruction of the crime scene, he said, adding that 3D tracking was also conducted at the seminar hall of the hospital.

The BJP has demanded the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for the ‘deteriorating’ law and order situation in the State, which is leading to atrocities against women, with the latest rape and murder of a woman doctor inside a medical college topping the list.

Addressing a press conference at the State BJP office on Friday, national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari charged that despite being a woman, heinous crimes against women have been rising because the “police are reluctant to take action against the rowdy-sheeters who are in league with TMC cadre”.

With member doctors of the Indian Medical Association going on strike on Saturday against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, the Karnataka government on Friday suspended the leaves of the medical officers and surgeons of government hospitals.

In a circular, the Health and Family Welfare Department said all the district health and family welfare officers and district surgeons along with the administrative officers of all the hospitals should ensure that emergency services are not affected, causing trouble for people.

Meanwhile, the IMA Karnataka unit president Srinivasa S told PTI that its branches across Karnataka will remain shut and there will be no OPD services anywhere.

A protest march will be taken out by doctors in several parts of Karnataka, he said.

A candlelight rally organised by the BJP women’s cell demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor was stopped by the police at its originating point on Friday.

Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari also observed a silent candlelight vigil in front of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) here protesting against the gruesome incident in the state-run R G Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

The women’s cell candlelight rally from Exide crossing to Hazra crossing in south Kolkata was stopped by the police before it could leave the originating point.

Led by former Union Minister Debasree Chaudhuri, the BJP’s women workers, lit candles and shouted slogans demanding the resignation of the chief minister.

The government on Friday said heads of health institutions will have to file an FIR within six hours in case of an incident of violence against a healthcare worker on duty, amid escalating protests across the country over the alleged rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor at a state-run hospital in Kolkata.

Following a call by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) for a 24-hour nationwide withdrawal of non-emergency and OPD services, more medics from public as well as private health facilities joined protests against last week’s incident at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, demanding justice for the victim and a central law to protect healthcare workers. In Delhi, non-emergency and out-patient department (OPD) services remained hit for the fifth day in major hospitals, including AIIMS and Safdarjung, while a group of medics held a sit-in outside the Nirman Bhawan, which houses the Union health ministry.

Protest marches were taken out by resident doctors in several cities, including those in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Gujarat, while in Kolkata, police have arrested 25 people in connection with the Thursday early morning vandalism and violence at the hospital where students are demonstrating since August 9 following the alleged rape and murder incident.

Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy on Friday wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah demanding enactment of a stringent central law to prevent atrocities against women.

Roy, who had sat on a dharna on August 14 in solidarity with a midnight protest by women on the issue of the rape-murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor in RG Kar hospital here, said a stringent central Act is imperative to ensure safety of women in public and private places, including hospitals, educational institutions, asylums, shopping malls, public transport, trams, government-semi government, private workplaces and other establishments.

He also called for the establishment of at least three fast-track courts in every district, with cases concluding within six months and no more than two adjournments for genuine reasons.

Roy demanded that if an investigating agency fails to provide required information within one month of a crime, the responsible personnel should be dismissed and face criminal prosecution.

The Calcutta High Court on Friday described the vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital as an “absolute failure of state machinery,” while the doctor’s parents told the CBI that a few interns and physicians of the reputed medical facility were allegedly involved in her rape and murder.

The HC’s division bench led by Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam expressed disbelief that police intelligence failed to detect the gathering of nearly 7,000 people at the hospital in the early hours of Independence Day.

Meanwhile, the CBI has intensified its probe into the alleged rape and murder of the woman doctor, following information from her parents that several interns and physicians from hospital may be involved in the crime.

The CBI has also conducted a reconstruction of the crime scene with the accused and the probe is focusing on at least 30 people whose names have been provided by the victim’s family.

Slogans like “We want justice” echoed through the air as thousands of doctors from major hospitals staged a sit-in protest outside the Nirman Bhawan on Friday, demanding safety for medics and justice for the trainee doctor who was raped and brutally murdered in Kolkata.

The Maulana Azad Road was blocked as a large number of doctors protested there, with some wearing black bands on their sleeves.

Hundreds were seen holding posters and Mansi, a female doctor from Lady Hardinge Medical College, held one that read, “Where can we go just to be safe?” “She was at her workplace when she was raped and murdered. We are not safe on the road, and some are not safe even in their homes,” Mansi said.

Later in the afternoon, the protesters sat on the road, completely blocking it, leading to diversion of traffic.

Resident doctors stood on the roadside outside the Nirman Bhawan, with a heavy presence of policemen who had barricaded both sides of the road.

General Secretary of CPI (M) D Raja on Friday said that the rape and murder of the female doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was a heinous crime and has led to agitations across the whole country.

Speaking to ANI, Raja said “What has happened in Kolkata is a heinous crime. The agitation has continued not just in West Bengal but across the whole country. Not only medical doctors and students have been protesting but women from other organizations have also joined the protest now. The West Bengal government needs to convince the people now on how the government has been taking strong action against the culprits and how it has been considering the demands made by the doctors and the other medical personnel.”

Further, he added that the West Bengal government should not engage in the blame game of accusing the opposition parties. The law and order is the responsibility of the CM and she needs to honestly tell the doctors and the people of Bengal what the government has been doing.

The site where the 31-year-old doctor was allegedly raped and murdered in a Kolkata hospital underwent sudden renovations, potentially leading to tampering with evidence, the NCW has alleged, noting that the crime scene should have been sealed immediately by the police.

The NCW has revealed lapses in security, infrastructure, and the investigation surrounding the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at a state-run hospital in Kolkata.

The NCW’s inquiry revealed that no security guards were present during the incident, leaving on-call interns, doctors, and nurses without sufficient protection during night shifts.

Furthermore, the Committee reported potential evidence tampering, noting that the site where the crime allegedly took place was undergoing sudden renovations.

The crime scene, they emphasized, should have been sealed immediately by the police.

The BJP leaders fanned out across the country on Friday to target the opposition parties over the issue of safety of women following the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, and alleged that core values of the Constitution were being undermined in West Bengal under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led government.

Addressing a press conference in Kolkata, BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi claimed that opposition parties have exhibited a “dangerous mindset of hatred and disregard” for women, and protection of criminals from Kannauj to Kolkata.

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has claimed that democracy does not exist in West Bengal and that Mamata Banerjee is a dictator, protecting criminals, asking how can his party still be in an alliance with her.

A junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital said, “Our primary demand is the arrest of the culprits with proper evidence with an official press release confirming the same from the CBI.”

“We demand a written apology, order of resignation of higher authorities including the former Principal of RG Kar, MSVP, Dean of Students Affairs, HOD of the Chest Medicine Department and the Assistant Super Support on Duty of the incident and they should be barred from holding any administrative or authoritative positions in any institution for the remaining duration of their services,” she adds.

The health ministry’s decision to form a panel for deliberating on a central law to protect healthcare workers is “too little and too late” as it just needs political will to bring a legislation on the matter, IMA chief Dr R V Asokan said on Friday.

Asokan told PTI that the government is reluctant to acknowledge that there is violence against doctors and hospitals.

There is a draft bill that was prepared in 2019 after stakeholders’ consultation but it never went to Parliament, he pointed out.

He cited the example of how during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897 was amended by an ordinance and the amended Act was brought out within 24 hours. Parliament later passed it in 2023.

TMC leaders on Friday said the public outrage and outpouring of grief over the rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor in Kolkata is understandable but the CBI taking over the case shouldn’t lead to it “being quietly buried”.

TMC leaders also warned of “fake propaganda” going around in social media on the rape-murder incident.

In a post on X, Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien said, “It is hard to conceive of a more bestial, heinous crime than the murder and rape of a young woman that took place in Kolkata. The public outrage is entirely understandable. Thoughts and prayers with her family,” the Rajya Sabha MP said in a post on X.

O’Brien also said the CBI, which is currently probing the case, should give daily updates on the investigation, and added that the probe should be completed before August 17.

On the RG Kar rape and murder case, Smriti Irani says, “Does the CM of Bengal want to ensure that investigations are not completed in totality? Why is she in a hurry knowing that these questions are still unanswered?...”

Academic activities at the Jadavpur University were affected on Friday as associations of professors and students called for a day-long strike in protest against the vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

They also demanded the arrest of all those involved in the alleged rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor at the state-run hospital last week.

The Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association (JUTA) called for a day-long ceasework and a two-hour sit-in at the administrative building, denouncing any attempt to conceal evidence related to the rape and murder of the doctor.

The professors’ body demanded justice for the victim’s family and a high-level probe into the mob attack on nursing students and medics by miscreants in the early hours of Thursday, JUTA general secretary Partha Pratim Roy told PTI.

Hundreds of resident doctors struck work on Friday at government hospitals in Madhya Pradesh, including the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhopal, to protest against the alleged rape and murder of a woman medico and vandalism at a health facility in Kolkata, hitting medical services across the state.

Doctor associations said striking physicians stayed away from attending outpatient department (OPD) and elective operation theatre (OT) services, but they excluded emergency and ICU functions from the purview of their protest.

In the wake of the strike called by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), patients were left unattended at several hospitals in the state.

Assam Chief Minister Himant Biswa Sarma on Friday lashed out at his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee, asking her to “stop indulging in politics” over the rape and murder of a woman doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Sarma’s assertion while speaking to reporters here on the sidelines of a BJP meeting came in response to Banerjee accusing the opposition parties in West Bengal of being behind vandalism at the hospital in north Kolkata on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.

“The incident that happened in Kolkata is very sad and the people of West Bengal and the entire country are in a state of shock. Mamata didi should avoid doing politics over the matter. She should focus on finding out who was behind the incident and fixing the accountability,” Sarma said while replying to a query on Banerjee’s allegations.

“If you (Mamata Banerjee) do politics even after such a tragic incident, I believe this is very wrong. In such a time accusing others is wrong,” the Assam CM, who is the BJP’s election co-incharge for Jharkhand, said.

Nearly 4,000 resident doctors in Gujarat went on an indefinite strike from Friday in support of the nationwide protests launched by their colleagues against the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at a Kolkata medical college on August 9.

Resident doctors of some 20 medical colleges and attached hospitals in Gujarat have announced they would stay away from routine ward duties and outpatient department (OPD) services as part of the stir, though they would be available for trauma and emergency services.

Though alternate arrangements have been made to manage the high inflow of OPD patients at government-run hospitals, some of these services were affected due to the stir by the resident doctors, officials admitted.

In the morning, the resident doctors staged protests, took out rallies on campuses and raised slogans seeking justice in the heinous Kolkata incident.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday demanded the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in light of the rape and murder of a woman doctor at a government hospital in Kolkata and the deteriorating law and order situation.

Addressing a press conference at the state BJP office here, the party’s national spokesperson, Shazia Ilmi, said the competent authorities should decide on imposing the President’s rule in West Bengal.

“Women’s safety is under threat, and the law and order situation in West Bengal has deteriorated. The competent authorities should decide on imposing the President’s rule in the state,” she said.

There is no justification for Mamata Banerjee to continue as chief minister, and she should resign immediately, Ilmi said.

Doctors of the state-run Goa Medical College and Hospital on Friday began their daylong strike to protest the brutal rape and murder of a woman post graduate trainee doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

Meanwhile, the Goa unit of the Indian Medical Association said its strike would begin from 6am on Saturday.

The stir at GMCH began during the day outside the gates of the facility, with those taking part boycotting outpatient department (OPD) services.

GMCH Dean Dr Shivanand Bandekar said emergency services were not affected by the stir as senior consultants and head of departments (HODs) have been pressed into service.

All hospitals across the country should be declared safe zones like airports so that doctors can work without fear, Indian Medical Association (IMA) chief Dr R V Asokan said on Friday.

This is one of the five demands of the IMA.

Secondly, there should be a central law to check violence on healthcare workers, he said.

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Friday slammed the BJP and accused them of drawing “political benefits” from the Kolkata medic’s rape and murder case.

While answering a question regarding the incident, Yadav said, “Any incident with a woman across the country is sad. Action should be taken against it. Mamata Banerjee is a female chief minister, and she will take action. But these people of BJP are doing politics.”

“The BJP has a talent for doing politics on every incident. They have the talent of drawing political benefits over every incident and dishonouring others,” he added.

The BJP staged rallies and sit-ins across West Bengal on Friday, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee following the recent murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital here.

Party workers, carrying posters demanding Banerjee’s resignation and raising slogans against the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, described the state’s condition as worse than failed democracies like Pakistan and Afghanistan, accusing the administration of failing to resolve the crisis.

The party alleged that their planned rally at Shyambazar Five Point Crossing in Kolkata was thwarted by police.

A stage set up for the rally was dismantled, and several BJP workers were detained and taken to the central lock-up at Lalbazar police headquarters. The party condemned these actions, labeling them as attempts to stifle public dissent.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Friday (August 16, 2024) said atrocities against women in West Bengal, Bihar, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh (UP) have shaken the country and asserted that repeated leniency in cases, political protection for the accused and granting bail or parole to convicts let down women.

“When Government statistics show 86 rapes taking place every day, from whom should women expect protection?”, she posed in a post in Hindi on X (formerly Twitter).

“Atrocities against women in Kolkata, Bihar, Uttarakhand and UP have shaken the entire country. At this time, women across the country are in grief and anger,” Priyanka Gandhi said on X.

Junior doctors at five medical colleges in Jharkhand went on an indefinite strike on Friday to protest against the alleged rape and murder of a woman medico and vandalism at a health facility in Kolkata, officials said.

The doctors boycotted the outpatient department (OPD) and elective operation theatre (OT) services but they excluded emergency services from the purview of their protest.

Jharkhand Junior Doctors Network (JDN) President Vikash Kumar said senior residents and junior medicos of five medical colleges in Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Hazaribag, Palamu and Dumka went on strike from Friday morning.

JDN vice-president Dr Jaideep said doctors did not want to go on strike as patients suffer from a ceasework at a hospital.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal on Friday asserted that the force was not trying to shield anyone and it tried to be as transparent as possible in the probe into the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at a state-run hospital here.

Addressing a press conference, Goyal also admitted that despite “sufficient security presence”, the police did not expect the protesting crowd to turn violent outside RG Kar Hospital premises in the early hours of August 15, and were initially caught off-guard when a deputy commissioner-ranked officer got injured.

The CP said that Kolkata Police has handed over all evidence, including videographed post-mortem to the CBI, which is investigating the case upon orders of the Calcutta High Court. “We are not shielding anyone, and police tried to be as transparent as possible in our probe. We have handed over all evidence related to the case to the CBI. Have faith in the central probe agency,” he said.

Goyal also said initially registering an unnatural death case did not mean police wanted to “label the crime as suicide”.

Mamata Banerjee on Friday said that from day one, she has been with the victim family and has sought death penalty for the culprits. “Whatever the students demanded, Kolkata Police accepted everything to apprehend the criminals. I am a politician, but I am humane individual. Never did anything wrong to anyone,” she said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday led a protest rally from Moulali to Dorina crossing in Kolkata, demanding justice for a woman doctor, who was allegedly raped and murdered at a State-run hospital last week.

TMC activists, who accompanied Ms. Banerjee, shouted slogans for capital punishment for the accused, a demand that the chief minister has already made.

The parents of the woman doctor, who was allegedly raped and murdered inside the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last week, have told the CBI that a few interns and physicians of the same medical establishment were involved in the crime, an officer said on Friday.

“The parents told us that they suspect the involvement of multiple persons behind the sexual assault and murder of their daughter. They have given us names of a few interns and doctors working with their daughter at the RG Kar Hospital,” the CBI officer said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday led a rally demanding justice for the victim and death penalty for the main accused in the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College, which triggered massive protests across medical colleges in West Bengal.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Friday (August 16, 2024) attacked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for accusing the Opposition parties of being behind the vandalism at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital saying that there can be “no room for politics” on the rape and murder of the junior doctor. Mr. Pradhan alleged that the Chief Minister’s attempt to cover up, stifle dissent and shield perpetrators raises serious questions.

“There has been complete systemic failure in West Bengal time and again. But the blame lies on ‘Bam and Ram’. Absolutely disgusting, shameful and reprehensible statement from Mamata Didi. The day is not far when Mamata Didi will even blame aliens and extraterrestrials for her misrule,” Mr. Pradhan wrote in a post on X.

Delhi Police issued prohibitory orders in the central areas of the National Capital amid protest calls by multiple organisations against the Kolkata rape-murder case on Friday, officials said.

Deployment of police personnel has been increased and Section 163 (prohibitory orders) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) has been imposed near the Parliament and other parts of central Delhi, they said.

The BJP on Friday alleged that its workers were prevented from holding a rally in Kolkata to protest against the death of a woman doctor in the State-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in the city last week.

Several saffron party workers were rounded up and taken to central lock-up in Lalbazar police headquarters. Police officers were not available for comment.

Several BJP leaders like Agnimitra Paul, an MLA, and Rudranil Ghosh were among those who assembled in Shyambazar to take part in the demonstration.

Uttarakhand Assembly Speaker Ritu Khanduri on Friday condemned the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in West Bengal and said it is “even sadder” that the incident happened in a State governed by a woman chief minister. “Crime should be condemned, law should be strict but there should also be change in the society,” the Speaker said.

The whole nation should raise its voice against the heinous crime, she said and asserted a societal change is needed to curb such incidents. - PTI

The resident doctor’s indefinite strike intensified in Maharashtra on its fourth day on Friday, with their seniors joining the protest, disrupting services at government and civic hospitals and inconveniencing thousands of patients in the State.

Dr. Pratik Debaje, president of Maharashtra State Association of Residential Doctors (Central-MARD) told PTI that 6000-7000 senior resident doctors affiliated to the Maharashtra Association of Bonded Resident Doctors (MABRD) and the Association of State Medical Interns (ASMI) joined the strike on Friday.

“17,000-18,000 (resident) doctors in Maharashtra are on strike at present,” Mr. Debaje said.

Students of the All India Institute of Medical Science, Mangalagiri, have suspended all non-emergency services from Friday, protesting the rape and murder of a fellow medico in Kolkata recently.

A post-graduate student of RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata was raped and murdered in the wee hours of August 9.

Non-emergency services were suspended from 8:30 a.m. today as part of an indefinite strike, however, all emergency services such as ICU, labour room and others will continue as usual.

“The resident doctors (senior and junior residents) along with the interns and undergraduate students of AIIMS, Mangalagiri have unanimously decided to initiate an indefinite halt of all non-emergency services,” NVS Krishna Reddy, a medico from the college told PTI.

Further, he said students from three colleges- AIIMS, Government Siddhartha Medical College and Pinnamaneni Siddhartha Medical College- will take out a rally today in Vijayawada.

Amid widespread protests over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, the Union Health Ministry on Friday said the heads of institutions will be responsible for filing an institutional FIR within six hours of an incident of violence against any healthcare worker on duty.

The office memorandum by Director General of Health Services (DGHS) Dr. Atul Goel was issued to directors and medical superintendents of Central government hospitals, including AIIMS, and principals of all medical colleges across the country.

“It is stated that in the event of any violence against any healthcare worker while on duty, the Head of Institution shall be responsible for filing an institutional FIR within a maximum of 6 hours of the incident,” the memo read.

BJP leaders Rudranil Ghosh and Ashok Kirtaniya were detained by the police on August 16 during protests in Kolkata.

Demanding the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the BJP said its women’s wing will hold a candlelight rally to her residence on Friday in protest.

Bollywood stars Hrithik Roshan, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Kriti Sanon have demanded justice in the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee physician in Kolkata, while expressing solidarity with doctors protesting over the case.

In a post on social media platform X on Thursday evening, Hrithik said Indian society has a long way to go before every citizen feels “equally safe”.

“Yes we need to evolve into a society where we ALL feel equally safe. But that is going to take decades. It’s going to hopefully happen with sensitizing and empowering our sons and daughters. The next generations will be better. We will get there. Eventually. But what in the interim? “Right now justice would be to put a hard stop to such atrocities. And the only way to do that is a punishment so harsh that it scares the living daylights out of such perpetrators. That’s what we need. Perhaps?” he wrote.

BJP supporters led by Siliguri MLA Sankar Ghosh on August 16 protested against RG Kar incident and demanded resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The saffron party’s women’s wing is also scheduled to hold a candlelight rally to Mamata Banerjee’s south Kolkata residence at Kalighat from Hazra crossing on August 15 to protest the vandalism at RG Kar Hospital in the early hours of Thursday.

The public outrage over the rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor in Kolkata is understandable but the CBI taking over the case shouldn’t lead to it “being quietly buried”, Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien said on Friday.

“It is hard to conceive of a more bestial, heinous crime than the murder and rape of a young woman that took place in Kolkata. The public outrage is entirely understandable. Thoughts and prayers with her family,” the Rajya Sabha MP said in a post on X.

The Indian Medical Association on Thursday (August 15, 2024) night announced a 24-hour nationwide withdrawal of non-emergency services from 6 a.m. on August 17 to protest against the rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor at the State-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata and the subsequent vandalism at the facility.

Essential services will be maintained and casualty wards operational, the medical body said in a statement.

On being informed that 15 police personnel were injured during vandalism of RG Kar Medical College which occurred on the night of August 14, the Calcutta High Court said “The police couldn’t protect their own men? Sorry state of affairs. How will these doctors work fearlessly?”

The court said that the CBI was free to visit the hospital and take stock of the situation. The Bench asked the doctors at RG Kar to present their view at the next hearing.

The Calcutta High Court was hearing a petition on the vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in the early hours of August 16. Counsel of the family members of the victim, Senior Advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, prayed that mob violence be also handed over to the CBI.

Counsel of State government said that a mob of 7000 persons had gathered.

The Bench of Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court T.S. Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya directed the police and hospital authorities to place on record the sequence of events resulting in the violence.

“If 7000 people are to gather, it hard to believe the State police did not know. So many people can’t come walking. This is an absolute failure of State machinery,” said the Bench.

Calcutta High Court on Friday directed that the identity of the victim of RG Kar Medical College incident should not be revealed in any manner. The Court also asks the media not to publish any photographs of the victim.

The supporters of Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) on Friday (August 16, 2024) engaged in a scuffle with police at several places in Kolkata, following which many of its supporters were being detained by the police at several places.

The SUCI activists had called for a 12-hour bandh in protest against the rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital as well as subsequent violence.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will be leading a rally demanding justice for the victim at 4 p.m. This comes after the ruling party in West Bengal alleged a “coordinated” effort by the BJP and CPI(M) to politicise the rape-murder of the junior doctor.

Following the outrage and criticisms from all corners and Opposition parties, the probe was transferred from the Kolkata Police to the CBI on orders of the Calcutta High Court on August 13.

Kolkata Police on Friday said it has so far arrested 19 people in connection with the vandalism and violence at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in the metropolis. “Those arrested were remanded to police custody by a city court till August 22,” officials said.

The emergency ward, nursing station, medicine store and parts of the outpatient department of the hospital were vandalised by miscreants on Thursday amid midnight protests by women across West Bengal, condemning the alleged rape and murder of a doctor in the hospital’s seminar hall on August 9. - PTI

Activists and doctors across India continued to protest on Wednesday to demand justice for a female doctor, who was raped and murdered while on duty in a hospital in the eastern city of Kolkata.

Feminist groups rallied on the streets in protests titled “Reclaim the Night” in Kolkata overnight on Wednesday – on the eve of India’s independence day – in solidarity with the victim, demanding the principal of RG Kar Medical College resign. Some feminist protesters also marched well beyond Kolkata, including in the capital Delhi.

This comes after two days of nationwide protests by doctors following the incident at RG Kar Medical College in West Bengal’s capital city. “Sit-in demonstrations and agitation in the hospital campus will continue,” one of the protesting doctors, identified as Dr Mridul, told Al Jazeera.

Services in some medical centres were halted indefinitely, and marches and vigils shed light on issues of sexual violence, as well as doctors’ safety in the world’s most populous nation.

What happened to the doctor in Kolkata?

A 31-year-old trainee doctor’s dead body, bearing multiple injuries, was found on August 9 in a government teaching hospital in Kolkata.

The parents of the victim were initially told “by hospital authorities that their daughter had committed suicide,” lawyer and women’s rights activist Vrinda Grover told Al Jazeera. But an autopsy confirmed that the victim was raped and killed.

Grover has appeared for victims in sexual violence cases in India in the past, including Bilkis Bano , a Muslim woman who was gang-raped during the 2002 Gujarat riots, and Soni Sori, a tribal activist based in Chhattisgarh state.

Thousands of doctors marched in Kolkata on Monday, demanding better security measures and justice for the victim.

On Tuesday, the Kolkata High Court transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) called for a nationwide halting of elective services in hospitals starting on Monday. Elective services are medical treatments that can be deferred or are not deemed medically necessary.

On Tuesday, FORDA announced on its X account that it is calling off the strike after Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda accepted protest demands.

One of these demands was solidifying the Central Protection Act, intended to be a central law to protect medical professionals from violence, which was proposed in the parliament’s lower house in 2022, but has not yet been enacted.

FORDA said that the ministry would begin working on the Act within 15 days of the news release, and that a written statement from the ministry was expected to be released soon.

Why are some Indian doctors continuing to protest?

However, other doctors’ federations and hospitals have said they will not back down on the strike until a concrete solution is found, including a central law to curb attacks on doctors.

Those continuing to strike included the Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA), Delhi-based All India Institute Of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Indira Gandhi Hospital, local media reported.

Ragunandan Dixit, the general secretary of the AIIMS Resident Doctors’ Association, said that the indefinite strike will continue until their demands are met, including a written guarantee of the implementation of the Central Protection Act.

Medical professionals in India want a central law that makes violence against doctors a non-bailable, punishable offence, in hopes that it deters such violent crimes against doctors in the future.

Those continuing to protest also call for the dismissal of the principal of the college, who was transferred. “We’re demanding his termination, not just transfer,” Dr Abdul Waqim Khan, a protesting doctor told ANI news agency. “We’re also demanding a death penalty for the criminal,” he added.

“Calling off the strike now would mean that female resident doctors might never receive justice,” Dr Dhruv Chauhan, member of the National Council of the Indian Medical Association’s Junior Doctors’ Network told local news agency Press Trust of India (PTI).

Which states in India saw doctors’ protests?

While the protests started in West Bengal’s Kolkata on Monday, they spread across the country on Tuesday.

The capital New Delhi, union territory Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh capital Lucknow and city Prayagraj, Bihar capital Patna and southern state Goa also saw doctors’ protests.

Who is the suspect in the Kolkata rape case?

Local media reported that the police arrested suspect Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer who would visit the hospital often. He has unrestricted access to the ward and the police found compelling evidence against him.

The parents of the victim told the court that they suspect that it was a case of gang rape, local media reported.

Why is sexual violence on the rise in India?

Sexual violence is rampant in India, where 90 rapes were reported on average every day in 2022.

Laws against sexual violence were made stricter following a rape case in 2012, when a 22-year-old physiotherapy intern was brutally gang-raped and murdered on a bus in Delhi. Four men were hanged for the gang rape, which had triggered a nationwide protests.

But despite new laws in place, “the graph of sexual violence in India continues to spiral unabated,” said Grover.

She added that in her experience at most workplaces, scant attention is paid to diligent and rigorous enforcement of the laws.

“It is regrettable that government and institutions respond only after the woman has already suffered sexual assault and often succumbed to death in the incident,” she added, saying preventive measures are not taken.

In many rape cases in India, perpetrators have not been held accountable. In 2002, Bano was raped by 11 men, who were sentenced to life imprisonment. In 2022, the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi authorised the release of the men, who were greeted with applause and garlands upon their release.

However, their remission was overruled and the Supreme Court sent the rapists back to jail after public outcry.

Grover believes that the death penalty will not deter rapists until India addresses the deeply entrenched problem of sexual violence. “For any change, India as a society will have to confront and challenge, patriarchy, discrimination and inequality that is embedded in our homes, families, cultural practices, social norms and religious traditions”.

What makes this case particularly prominent is that it happened in Kolkata, Sandip Roy, a freelance contributor to NPR, told Al Jazeera. “Kolkata actually prided itself for a long time on being really low in the case of violence against women and being relatively safe for women.”

A National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report said that Kolkata had the lowest number of rape cases in 2021 among 19 metropolitan cities, with 11 cases in the whole year. In comparison, New Delhi was reported to have recorded 1, 226 cases that year.

Prime Minister Modi’s governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for dismissing the government in West Bengal, where Kolkata is located, led by Mamata Banerjee of All India Trinamool Congress (AITC). Banerjee’s party is part of the opposition alliance.

Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in parliament, also called for justice for the victim.

“The attempt to save the accused instead of providing justice to the victim raises serious questions on the hospital and the local administration,” he posted on X on Wednesday.

Roy spoke about the politicisation of the case since an opposition party governs West Bengal. “The local government’s opposition will try to make this an issue of women’s safety in the state,” he said.

Have doctors in India protested before?

Roy explained to Al Jazeera that this case is an overlap of two kinds of violence, the violence against a woman, as well as violence against “an overworked medical professional”.

Doctors in India do not have sufficient workplace security, and attacks on doctors have started protests in India before.

In 2019, two junior doctors were physically assaulted in Kolkata’s Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital (NRSMCH) by a mob of people after a 75-year-old patient passed away in the hospital.

Those attacks set off doctors’ protests in Kolkata, and senior doctors in West Bengal offered to resign from their positions to express solidarity with the junior doctors who were attacked.

More than 75 percent of Indian doctors have faced some form of violence, according to a survey by the Indian Medical Association in 2015.

What happens next?

The case will now be handled by the CBI, which sent a team to the hospital premises to inspect the crime scene on Wednesday morning, local media reported.

According to Indian law, the investigation into a case of rape or gang rape is to be completed within two months from the date of lodging of the First Information Report (police complaint), according to Grover, the lawyer.

The highest court in West Bengal, which transferred the case from the local police to the CBI on Tuesday, has directed the central investigating agency to file periodic status reports regarding the progress of the investigation.

The FIR was filed on August 9, which means the investigation is expected to be completed by October 9.

Hospital services across West Bengal remained disrupted on Monday due to the ongoing protests by the medical fraternity over the gruesome rape and murder of a junior doctor at a government-run hospital in Kolkata last week.

Interns and postgraduate trainees at state-run medical establishments across the state have joined the ongoing agitation in support of the junior doctors' cease work at that hospital. Now in its fourth day, the protest will continue until those responsible are brought to justice.

The semi-nude body of the 31-year-old woman post-graduate trainee doctor , who was raped and murdered inside a seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was found on August 9 morning, sparking a nationwide outrage.

After initial investigation and examination of the CCTV cameras installed on the hospital premises, Kolkata Police arrested a civic volunteer, identified as Sanjay Roy, who later admitted to his crime .

The accused, who was arrested in an intoxicated condition from outside the hospital, has been sent to police custody till August 23 and many high-raking officials of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have been suspended for negligence in the matter .

Here is a timeline of everything that has happened in the case so far:

August 5-8: Sanjay Roy travelled to Salua in Kharagpur to attend a Police's Welfare Society meeting. He stayed there from August 5 to August 8, claiming he was on duty as a civic assistant.

August 8, morning: Upon his return to Kolkata on the morning of August 8, Sanjay Roy first visited RG Kar Hospital, where he worked as a broker, to facilitate the admission of a patient. After ensuring the patient was admitted, he left the hospital but returned later that night.

August 8, night: At around 11 pm, Sanjay returned to RG Kar Hospital to assist the same patient with an X-ray. The patient's family accompanied him during this time. After spending a few minutes with them, Sanjay left the hospital building.

August 9, early hours: Sanjay returned to the hospital again at around 1 am to help another patient whose surgery was scheduled. After assisting this patient, he remained on the hospital premises, where he consumed alcohol with one of the patient's relatives behind the hospital building. He also provided financial assistance to the patient’s family and arranged an Uber bike for their journey home.

August 9, 3 am: At approximately 3 am, Sanjay went back to the third floor of the Chest Medicine building at the hospital. Within minutes, he entered the seminar hall where the lady doctor was resting. It was here that he allegedly raped and murdered her. Sanjay left the seminar hall after about 40-45 minutes.

August 9, 4:30 am: CCTV footage captured Sanjay leaving the hospital premises at around 4.37 am. He then returned to his barrack and went to sleep.

Later that morning: The Kolkata Police, after reviewing the CCTV footage and observing his suspicious activities, detained Sanjay Roy from the barrack. He was brought back to the hospital for questioning.
