Research Proposal Meeting

The Research Proposal Meeting is held about 1.5 to 2 years following your admission into the Ph.D. programme. It is usually conducted after you pass your comprehensive exam. You will have to document your your proposal in about 10 pages and then make a presentation for exactly 20 minutes. In this document you should highlight the following:

• Introduce your work
• Provide a comprehensive literature survey so that you can identify gaps in the research.
• Highlight and discuss this gap.
• Frame objectives with an aim to fill the gap you identified.
• Frame methods and experiments to do what it takes to address the objectives
• Show preliminary results that shows that your methods show promise of leading to adressing the gaps in the literature.
• Discuss, what you have done so far and what is remaining.
• Provide a time-line through a gantt chart describing milestones such as, first seminar, first paper, conference, second paper, etc.

To write your proposal use the template. This folder contains two .tex files. One of them is the source code for the actual RPM document. The other one will generate a standalone gantt chart. What you need to modify in the .tex files is clearly indicated.

Research proposal for IITs for MS (/+) PhD

I was filling up the form of IIT Madras for admission in MS and MS+ PhD program.

Now there's a section by name research proposal.

My question is how to fill up that? In general, research proposals are made for one intended research path/topic only. Where you discuss about your methodology, background, research questions etc etc. Will the research proposal in this case will be like that?

My doubt is arising because at first they have given 3 choices to fill in the department. So if my research proposal belongs to a department which I don't get, then it would get cancelled isn't it? In that case if makes sense to write about all the 3 choices and my area of interest from there.

How to write a scientific paper: a step-by-step guide from an iit professor.

Summary  A research paper contains critical analysis and interpretation of the research findings  It compares the proposed approach with other existing methods and explains trends with proper scientific justifications

Writing a scientific article from scratch may appear a scary task to young researchers. But the process can be simplified by good groundwork while preparing and executing the research project. Based on these preparations, a systematic approach to writing paves the way for a compelling research story.

Here are some tips to help you write a top scientific article.

Get familiar with unfamiliarity

Scientific research and subsequent publication should start with good literature search, which will be helpful in providing a stronger background and the best methodology. It will also help you detect knowledge gaps, avoid duplication, and take a thorough look at the terminologies and keywords in your field.

Learn how to identify key points and arguments quickly without reading every word in a paper. Also, it is important to single out significant points that are necessary for your article. This can be done by reading a variety of review articles, books, published theses, or even through discussions with experts who can explain the topic in depth.

Get into it

Make a rough sketch of your research paper before you start to write. It should consist of a heading, sub-headings, important points, and figures/tables/schemes that you will illustrate later.

Writing a scientific article need not follow a specific order from the very beginning. The most convenient way to write a scientific article is by framing some major sections like references, results (figures and tables), methods, discussion, introduction, conclusion, abstract, keywords, and, of course, the title. Once the first draft is ready, these sections can be rearranged to the journal’s required order.

As you start writing, do not be a perfectionist. Do not worry about finding better words, using the best grammar, or crafting an excellent title. In the beginning, simply focus on writing down bullet points, statements, sentences, doubts, questions and arguments. Instead of pausing at specific points to make the article perfect, it is always better to keep going forward.

If you quote something verbatim from another paper, always use quotation marks and cite the source. Getting ideas by reading various sources is a common practice. But stating ideas in your own way and citing their sources for appropriate credit will help you avoid plagiarism.

Get involved

Based on the outline of your article, formulate a thesis statement that is clear, arguable and precise. It becomes easier if you break it down into questions that your paper will answer. You can, for instance, describe the main objectives and methodologies adopted to achieve the claims.

It is also useful to figure out how it would be better to compare your findings with the already existing ones and how beneficial they would seem to the scientific community. Minimise the text and include a number of figures/tables/schemes/charts to corroborate your research.

Get into the swing

Scientific writing is based on the scholar’s original research on a particular topic. A research paper contains critical analysis and interpretation of the research findings; it compares the proposed approach with other existing methods and explains trends with proper scientific justifications. It also suggests the best methodologies and how to bridge major knowledge gaps. Cost economics, identification of unbeaten tracks and promising paths for further developments for better understanding of the topic chosen are the other aspects of a scientific research paper.

Even if it is not possible to address all the points, you need to consider as many as possible.

Get it done

Excellent research must be followed by a scientifically convincing argument. Determine who your audience would be and how to convey your argument to them in the best possible manner. Write in a straightforward and clear way, without any grammar or syntax error. Do not include any information that is not absolutely necessary to support your argument.

Get the picture

A scientific article is structured like an hourglass—it starts with a broad topic and general background. It then gets narrowed down to the thesis statement, providing very specific details, evidence, and arguments.

The discussion part provides a detailed interpretation of the topic, connecting the study back to the existing literature and explaining how the current study fills a knowledge gap. Finally, the article gets broader again by explaining its significance in the related field and provides recommendations for future research.

Last but not least

Writing a scientific paper on a specific research problem should always focus on four questions.

• Why did you do it?
• How did you do it?
• What did you exactly do?
• Why does your research matter?

Ponder these questions even before you start writing and make a rough draft of the probable answers. This will help you organise your thoughts and get you in the groove.

A research proposal describes what you will investigate, why it’s important, and how you will conduct your research.

The format of a research proposal varies between fields, but most proposals will contain at least these elements:

While the sections may vary, the overall objective is always the same. A research proposal serves as a blueprint and guide for your research plan, helping you get organized and feel confident in the path forward you choose to take.

Academics often have to write research proposals to get funding for their projects. As a student, you might have to write a research proposal as part of a grad school application , or prior to starting your thesis or dissertation .

In addition to helping you figure out what your research can look like, a proposal can also serve to demonstrate why your project is worth pursuing to a funder, educational institution, or supervisor.

Research proposal length

The length of a research proposal can vary quite a bit. A bachelor’s or master’s thesis proposal can be just a few pages, while proposals for PhD dissertations or research funding are usually much longer and more detailed. Your supervisor can help you determine the best length for your work.

It also shows that you’re not simply repeating what other people have already done or said, but rather using existing research as a jumping-off point for your own.

In this section, share exactly how your project will contribute to ongoing conversations in the field by:

• Comparing and contrasting the main theories, methods, and debates
• Examining the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches
• Explaining how will you build on, challenge, or synthesize prior scholarship

Following the literature review, restate your main  objectives . This brings the focus back to your own project. Next, your research design or methodology section will describe your overall approach, and the practical steps you will take to answer your research questions.

To finish your proposal on a strong note, explore the potential implications of your research for your field. Emphasize again what you aim to contribute and why it matters.

For example, your results might have implications for:

• Improving best practices
• Informing policymaking decisions
• Strengthening a theory or model
• Challenging popular or scientific beliefs
• Creating a basis for future research

Make sure to check what type of costs the funding body will agree to cover. For each item, include:

• Cost : exactly how much money do you need?
• Justification : why is this cost necessary to complete the research?
• Source : how did you calculate the amount?

To determine your budget, think about:

• Travel costs : do you need to go somewhere to collect your data? How will you get there, and how much time will you need? What will you do there (e.g., interviews, archival research)?
• Materials : do you need access to any tools or technologies?
• Help : do you need to hire any research assistants for the project? What will they do, and how much will you pay them?

Keep your research objectives clear and concise, and use appropriate verbs to accurately convey the work that you will carry out for each one.

A research aim is a broad statement indicating the general purpose of your research project. It should appear in your introduction at the end of your problem statement , before your research objectives.

Research objectives are more specific than your research aim. They indicate the specific ways you’ll address the overarching aim.

A PhD, which is short for philosophiae doctor (doctor of philosophy in Latin), is the highest university degree that can be obtained. In a PhD, students spend 3–5 years writing a dissertation , which aims to make a significant, original contribution to current knowledge.

A PhD is intended to prepare students for a career as a researcher, whether that be in academia, the public sector, or the private sector.

A master’s is a 1- or 2-year graduate degree that can prepare you for a variety of careers.

All master’s involve graduate-level coursework. Some are research-intensive and intend to prepare students for further study in a PhD; these usually require their students to write a master’s thesis . Others focus on professional training for a specific career.

Critical thinking refers to the ability to evaluate information and to be aware of biases or assumptions, including your own.

Like information literacy , it involves evaluating arguments, identifying and solving problems in an objective and systematic way, and clearly communicating your ideas.

The best way to remember the difference between a research plan and a research proposal is that they have fundamentally different audiences. A research plan helps you, the researcher, organize your thoughts. On the other hand, a dissertation proposal or research proposal aims to convince others (e.g., a supervisor, a funding body, or a dissertation committee) that your research topic is relevant and worthy of being conducted.

How to Draft a Successful IIT Proposal

Drafting a proposal for an IIT (Investigator-Initiated Trial) or a grant is a difficult task even for the most seasoned academic. Even harder is crafting an application that will be successful and approved for funding. In this article, we’ll share some of our in-depth strategies to help you write your next application and improve your chances of success.

Know your Audience

The first step to writing a proposal is actually not to write, but instead, find out who you are writing for. Your target audience, or more specifically, the decision-makers or reviewers for your application will set the theme of your entire proposal, including the required content, tone, and style of writing.

In terms of an IIT or a grant application, the various types of people who might review an application can be broadly classified as either academics or business people. Academics prefer proposals that focus heavily on the technical and scientific aspects of the project; they care about “how” the problem will be solved. On the other hand, those in business lean towards proposals that focus on the global impact of the solution and the market size; they care about “why” the problem should be solved.

Determining your reviewers for your application requires a bit of research. One strategy is to reach out to successful past applicants for their insights. Furthermore, they may be able to share with you their application, which you could use as a template for your proposal. If you are unable to narrow down who will read your application, then your proposal should be crafted in such a way that appeals to both the academic and business mindsets.

Topics to Include

Whether you’re applying for an IIT or a grant application, there will be some sort of document with guidelines that will detail the number of pages, words, and even subsections that should be included. Please closely adhere to the rules (especially word counts) because most reviewers have a very limited amount of time to review each application. 

Aside from these rules, the information to be included in the proposal is most often left to your creativity. That being said, we recommend that you should always include the following pieces of information:

• What is the problem? How are people suffering because this problem is not currently solved?
• Who is affected by this problem? How many of them are there? What is the total market size?
• How is this problem being solved today? How are your competitors solving this problem?
• What is your proposed solution? Describe your novel scientific or clinical approach.
• How is your solution better than existing approaches?
• What will be the global impact of your solution?

Sequence of Ideas

Imagine going for a 3-course dinner, but having the dessert served first, followed by the appetizer, and then the main dish. You would not be pleased even though the overall contents of the meal were the same. The logical sequence of ideas is essential for any good proposal, and it typically follows a funnel-shaped approach. It should begin with a broad background and slowly narrow down to your specific idea. A typical sequence for an IIT or a grant application would be as follows:

• Problem description and its impact
• What people have done and are doing currently
• What are the disadvantages of the current solution?
• What is your solution, and how does it work?
• The benefits and impact of your solution

Keep in mind that different audiences will prefer a slightly different sequence of ideas. For example, business people or those who have limited time would prefer that you first state what your solution is and its benefits before going into detail about the problem.

Keeping the Language Simple

One of the problems that we often notice in applications is the amount of unnecessary technical jargon. On the one hand, you want your writing to sound intelligent. On the other hand, you also want your writing to be understood. Often we forget that the people who will be reviewing the application might not be an expert in our fields. Our advice is to keep your proposal as concise and straightforward as possible. For instance, avoid using words that are highly technical or field-specific and replace them with commonly used terminologies or phrases. Alternatively, if you have to use a technical term, then make sure to add a definition to help improve its clarity. It should be written such that someone with a first-year university or college education could understand. However, keep in mind that simplifying does not mean leaving out necessary information or dumbing down your writing. In the case of oversimplification, your reviewer might view that as a sign of unprofessionalism or that you have not put in adequate effort.

Include a Picture

A picture is worth a thousand words, and even more so in a highly word-restricted application. The added visual information will not only help better explain your ideas to the reviewers but will also make your application more memorable. However, ensure that if you do include a picture, that it is of the highest quality and professional. Otherwise, a bad image can have the opposite effect and weaken your application.

The Persuasive Element

One of the critical elements that separate an outstanding submission from a good one, the ones that get funded from those that get rejected, is the persuasive element. Unlike writing a report or a manuscript, the purpose of a proposal is not just to tell someone about your idea but also to convince them that it’s the one that should be funded. Persuasive writing is an art form that combines both logic and empathy. Not only do your reviewers have to understand the reasoning behind your idea, but they must also feel compelled to take action. One strategy is to highlight the pain of the problem and the impacts of your solution. For example, you could highlight the suffering of a particular disease or the economic burden that it brings. Furthermore, you could show how your approach will not only improve the lives of those affected but also reduce costs for the healthcare system. 

What’s Different About You?

When you write a proposal, try to think from the perspective of the reviewer. They are not reviewing only your proposal, but likely hundreds more during an application round. So, what is it about your application that stands out from the rest? If your solution to a problem has advantages and benefits over others, then make sure to highlight and emphasize it. However, avoid using languages that critique or devalues other solutions because it may be viewed negatively by the reviewers. For example, instead of saying a competitor’s product is worse than yours, you could instead highlight the benefits of your approach.

Writing a proposal is no easy task (we know), and it will take many attempts before you finally get one that is accepted. But do not feel discouraged, as the more you write and the more applications you submit, your chances for success significantly increases. New Delhi:  Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairperson S. Somanath added another feather to his already illustrious cap Friday as he received his PhD from IIT-Madras.

Speaking at the 61st convocation ceremony at IIT-Madras, Somanath, 60, said that despite being a topper throughout his academic life, he could never muster the courage to write an entrance exam at an IIT.

“I stand here and I see a young village boy. Despite being the topper in the state for science, I did not have the courage to write an entrance for IIT. But I always dreamt of graduating from such a prestigious institute,” Somanath said during the convocation.

The ISRO chief, an aerospace engineer from Bengaluru’s Indian Institute of Science, has been leading India’s space programme since 2022. Under his leadership, India became the first country in the world to land near the south pole of the Moon last year — the Chandrayaan-3 mission. In the same year, ISRO launched India’s first solar observatory, Aditya-L1.

Somanath’s PhD is related to vibration isolators. “The topic is very close to my heart. It is related to vibration isolators, which I started as an engineer in ISRO years ago. But this remained with me,” he said.

He added, “This PhD is a work of 25 years. What we are witnessing today is just the final leg.”

A statement from IIT-Madras said that on Friday, around 2,636 scholars were awarded their degrees, including for graduate and Masters programmes.

ISRO chief S Somanath received his doctorate from IIT Madras during the 61st convocation ceremony held in Chennai. He spoke to ETV Bharat on a range of issues including the future plans of the national space body.

Chennai (Tamil Nadu): Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chief S Somanath received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the IIT Madras during their convocation here on Friday.

Later in an exclusive interaction with ETV Bharat, he said, "It is an honour to get my PhD from IIT, Madras. I registered in 2006, and since then I have been actively involved in GSLV Mark rocket design work with ISRO as a young scientist, so I was unable to continue my research work for my PhD. Now I have completed and got my doctorate," he said.

Somnath said that research was his favourite field and he had a lot of interest in and it is now a part of his work.

Asked what was the research about, he quipped, "It was about PSLV rockets having high vibrations. By controlling it, the electronic circuits will work properly and will last for more days, so I have researched it under the heading of vibration isolators and implemented it for the first time in PSLV rockets.

Quizzed about ISRO's next plan, he said the design work of NGLV (Next Generation Launch Vehicle) is going on. "The paperwork for setting up a new space research centre has been completed and sent for approval. The work of making Chandrayaan's next version is also going on," elaborated the ISRO chief.

About the Aditya L-1 Mission, he noted that it was doing its job well at the designated site and would be under continuous observation for the next five years.

Meanwhile, a total of 2,636 students graduated during the 61st Convocation of IIT Madras. As many as 3,016 degrees (including joint and dual degrees) were awarded to the students. A total of 444 PhDs were awarded.

Dr. Brian K. Kobilka, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2012, said, "I do not consider myself to be exceptional in any way. My career today is an example of how an average individual can achieve a measure of success through a combination of factors including hard work, persistence, an element of luck and a great deal of help from family, friends and colleagues. When I look back at my career, I am amazed by how often I was in the right place at the right time, with the right people."

"I believe that there are five factors that played an important role in my career. First, I found my passion. Something I loved to do. A challenging goal that I wanted to pursue. Second, I was able to find role models and mentors who provided guidance at different stages of my career. Third, I recognised my strengths and weaknesses and found ways to leverage my strengths and accommodate for my weaknesses. Fourth, I had balance in my life. A fulfilling family life outside of my academic career. Finally and fifth, possibly the most important, I was not afraid to fail. I found ways to learn from my failures," added Dr Kobilka.

"A major goal when I began my independent career in 1990 was to obtain structures of the structures of G-protein-coupled receptors in active/inactive states. It took 21 years to achieve the goal and ultimately led to my being awarded the Nobel Prize. During those 21 years, I learned many things about how these receptors work from my many failed experiments,” quipped Dr Kobilka.

IIT Madras’ 61st Convocation witnesses graduation of 2,636 Students

IIT Madras conducted its 61st convocation where over 3016 degrees were awarded.

The event was an impressive affair with S Somnath, Chairman, ISRO receiving his doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering.

IIT Madras had an eventful year, with many major milestones, the top three being the establishments of Wadhwani School of Data Science & AI and School of Interdisciplinary Studies besides the launch of Agnibaan rocket.

The Department of Data Science and AI housed in the Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI, which was generously funded by IIT Madras Distinguished alumnus Mr. Sunil Wadhwani, will work on impactful problems of direct relevance to the society.

The International Interdisciplinary Master’s degree programs (I2MP) with innovative curricula to equip students with cutting-edge expertise and skills that transcend traditional engineering domains was launched in 2022.

The first batch of I2MP is graduating at this Convocation, say sources from IIT Madras. The I2MP receives over 200 applications annually from diverse backgrounds and countries, including Ethiopia, Mauritius, Syria, and Nepal.

These students study several core and elective courses at IIT Madras, in addition to a research project in their area of interest.

Chief Guest

The Chief Guest was Dr. Brian K. Kobilka, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2012. Dr. Pawan Goenka, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Madras, presided over the Convocation in the presence of Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, faculty, staff and students.

Dr. Brian K. Kobilka and Robert Lefkowitz discovered that the receptor was similar to receptors located in the eye that capture light.

It was later discovered that there is an entire family of receptors that look and act in similar ways–G-protein-coupled receptors. Approximately half of all medications used today make use of this kind of receptor.

When I look back at my career, I am amazed by how often I was in the right place at the right time, with the right people, said the chief guest at IIT Madras convocation.

Degree break-up

During this Convocation, Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, awarded degrees to 2,636 graduates including 764 B.Tech (of whom 27 with Honours).

Also, degrees were awarded to 277 Dual Degree B.Tech and M.Tech, 481 M.Tech, 151 M.Sc, 42 M.A, 50 Executive MBA, 84 MBA, 236 M.S, and 107 Web-enabled MTech for executives.

The above PhD numbers also include 07 joint degrees with universities in foreign countries including Australia, Singapore, France and Germany.

Chairman of BOG

Congratulating the graduating students, Dr. Pawan Goenka, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Madras, said, “India has already become a magnet for investments across various industries, ushering in an era of unprecedented opportunities.

This is leading to a remarkable transformation and is steering us towards becoming a ‘Viksit Bharat’ – a developed India by 2047.

This vision, championed by our Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, reflects a collective national ambition. The Indian economy is advancing rapidly.

‘A decade ago, India ranked as the 10th largest economy globally, today it is 5th, and will soon become 3rd.’

‘India aspires to become a $30 -$35 trillion economy by 2047, on its way to Viksit Bharat, he said during IIT Madras convocation.’

Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras presented the director’s report.

This year IIT Madras has exceeded its target of one patent a day by filing 419 patents during the year, of which 85 are international filings, and were granted 445 Indian and 15 international patents.

The IIT Madras Incubation Cell, the nodal incubator of IIT Madras and spearheading country’s leading deep tech startup hub, marked the beginning of 2024 on a jubilant note.

A total portfolio of 365 startups, cumulatively valued at INR 45,000 Crores (US$5.4 Billion, based on investments raised from angels/VCs), he said.

The goal for the fiscal year 2024-25 is to incubate 100 more, focusing on areas such as space, manufacturing, robotics, Assistive Tech, climate-tech, fintech and AI, he said.

In 2023-24, the Institute received sanction for 331 Ministry-sponsored projects for a total value of Rs 568.21 crores.

Our strong industry collaboration is evident from the 883 consultancy and industry-sponsored research projects received this financial year amounting to Rs 584.87 crores.

The above is inclusive of around 130 international projects funded by foreign entities, said IIT Madras director.

NEW DELHI: As engineers, it is our job to be aware of the consequences of the work we do, were the words of an IIT Madras graduate as he brought the Palestine war issue on the table during his introductory speech. Mechanical engineering student Dhananjay Balakrishan not only received a degree but was also awarded with the governor’s prize for proficiency in the curricular and extra-curricular activities.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras organized the 61st convocation ceremony today wherein over 2,600 students graduated and more than 3,000 received degrees.

Before sharing his views on the Israel-Palestine conflict with the IITM audience, the dual degree BTech graduate said that he’ll be doing himself and everything he believes in a great injustice, if he doesn’t use the stage to say something “very important”. Terming it as a “call for action”, he explained how the engineering jobs and wars are inter-related and urged the fraternity to make efforts in curbing the suffering of oppresed people.

Israel-Palestine conflict

Balakrishnan said, “There’s a mass genocide going on in Palestine. People are dying in vast numbers and there’s no visible end in sight. Why should we be bothered by this, you ask? Because STEM as a field in itself has historically been used to advance the ulterior motive of the imperial powers such as Israel. As engineering students we work hard to get top level jobs and tech giants which offer very lucrative pays and great benefits. However, these tech giants control various aspects of our lives today, as you know better than anyone. Many of these prestigious companies are also directly and indirectly implicated in the war against Palestine by providing Israel technologies that’re used to kill.”

“There’re no easy solutions and I don't have all the answers but i do know this – as engineers graduate into the real world, it is our job to be aware of the consequences of the work we do. And also to interrogate our own position into these complex systems. I hope that we can incorporate these awareness into our daily lives attempting to understand what we can do to liberate the oppressed on lines of caste, class, creed, and gender. I believe that that is the first step to curb the never ending cycle of suffering,” he added.

Quoting physicist and mathematician Isaac Newton, the mechanical engineering student said, “We’re here standing on the shoulders of the magnimus Indian populus and we hold them till every single person is out of their misery. Inaction is complicit and I hope that you and I and all of us can take action to make the right decisions however hard they might be.”

The graduate's speech was received positively with applaud by the people present during the IIT Madras ceremony.
