Choose Your Professional Path
Using Flexible Assignment Structures in Graduate Courses
Courtney E. Thompson | Feb 10, 2021
F or all of the hand-wringing about the lack of tenure-track jobs, graduate faculty often seem indisposed or ill-equipped to prepare their students for jobs outside of higher ed. Faculty who train graduate students must prepare students for multiple career paths by focusing not just on developing students’ intellectual engagement with the historiography or research tools, but by also introducing them to history career paths broadly construed. Building these paths into our teaching is one powerful way to signal to our students that there are multiple ways of being a historian.
Graduate students in Courtney E. Thompson’s classes select their own assignment paths to develop skills directly applicable to their professional goals. Justin Luebke/Unsplash
When I planned my first graduate-level course, I dutifully assigned the expected historiographic paper. Although my students produced great work, the essays were uniform and lacked vibrancy. I realized that this kind of assignment had limited utility. First, many graduate students were ill-equipped to write a historiographic essay. But second, and more importantly, writing a historiographic essay only really taught them how to write historiography—not a bad skill to have, but redundant if they were doing the same in other courses. I wanted to develop a pedagogical approach that would provide my students with tools that they could apply in their other courses and beyond the classroom. This seemed particularly important since I teach in a program with both MA and PhD students, who come to the classroom with varied experiences and professional goals. While some hope to be hired as tenure-track faculty, others are looking at career paths that lead into high schools, museums, libraries and archives, or other sites and fields. I began to consider how I could help these students by focusing on transferable skills, demonstrating how knowledge of the field and historical research skills can serve as a foundation for various forms of historical work for different audiences.
Over the next few years, I experimented with various assignments and assignment structures in my graduate courses, using student feedback to redesign these assignments for the next graduate course. But I was still unsatisfied. It seemed as silly to ask a roomful of graduate students whose professional aspirations did not include major independent research projects to write a fellowship application as to write a historiographic essay. And with every new class, I had more assignment options to draw from, which became harder and harder to choose between. I hit upon the solution: Why not let them choose?
And so my interpretation of the “ Choose Your Path ” assignment structure was born, first tested in my History of the Body colloquium during the fall of 2020. I decided there would be three key assignments, which would feed into one another. After an initial annotated bibliography project—thus foregrounding historiography and using it as a stepping-stone, rather than treating it as an end point—each student would pick a “path” through which they would complete the other two projects, which were scaled to be more or less the same amount of work. The three paths I settled on were pedagogy, research, and public engagement, though I considered other options and plan to expand this decision tree further in the future.
I hit upon the solution: Why not let them choose?
All students begin the assignment path with an annotated bibliography that becomes the foundation for their further projects. While they shared in the experience of completing an annotated bibliography, their topics were wide-ranging and specific to their own research interests, as I encouraged them to find topics and materials that were relevant to both their short-term and long-term goals. After this point, they selected a path and began work on the second project, which was either a new course proposal and syllabus (pedagogy), a fellowship application (research), or a pitch and op-ed (public scholarship). After the second assignment, they moved on to the third major assignment, building once again from the research and materials from the first two: a lecture draft and presentation (pedagogy), an annotated document and primary source analysis (research), or an exhibition proposal and design (public scholarship). Each of these assignments had multiple components and instructions, some borrowed from past courses, and some (the public scholarship track) were invented wholesale for this assignment.
Since each assignment built on the previous one and all were founded on close attention to historical literature, the varying products demonstrated the centrality of research and scholarship to all branches of history for various audiences and in different venues. The assignment structure puts into practice James Grossman’s recent call to expand the boundaries of our definition of scholarship (“ The Diffusion of Knowledge ,” Perspectives , January 2021). As he observed, “As we broaden the terrain of our work, we correspondingly widen the appeal of our discipline to individuals interested in history but also committed to influence beyond the academy, whether from within the professoriate or beyond.” The basic tools of research can and should be presented as a foundation for different kinds of historical labor for different audiences, broadening students’ conception of what history is and where and how it is done through different formats. As Grossman explained, this kind of work helps us “prepare graduate students for the many ways of being historians.”
The three paths were selected based on my own experience and skill sets, as I believed myself capable of assessing and guiding students through this work. This could be seen as a limitation. While I’ve designed exhibitions, for example, my experience (and the assignment) was still heavily reliant on traditional academic research. Other forms of public engagement and scholarship are beyond my own current skill set; indeed, it wasn’t until I assigned a pitch and op-ed (and developed corresponding guidelines) that I was emboldened to start doing the same. In future iterations, I hope to bring in campus experts in fields including archival management , exhibition planning, and digital scholarship to expand the options and train my students (and me) in developing these projects. Such cross-campus collaboration, while not incorporated into my course design this past fall, is a goal for my graduate pedagogy in the future.
I was up front with my students about the fact that this was an experimental design. The assignment structure thus became an open conversation about how we develop assignments and the goals of graduate coursework, which provided us with another set of lessons and further transparency about what history is and how it is done. At the end of the semester, they provided me with useful suggestions about how to revise this structure for the future, including adding “mini-orals” presentation components, digital humanities options, and other possible assignments.
While a simple idea at heart, this assignment structure conveys some key notions to students.
Since this course assignment design is iterative and interactive, in the future I hope that it will look less like a set of narrow tracks and more like a branching tree of options and decisions, with each branch relating to a set of skills and a professional path or paths. I also intend in future iterations of this assignment to incorporate concepts and resources from the AHA’s Career Diversity for Historians initiative. The “ Career Diversity Five Skills ,” for example, could be used as a starting point for five branching assignment paths. The resources available as part of this initiative might also provide students with a starting point for articulating their long- and short-term goals, which in turn could allow me to create assignment paths and options for them to respond to their needs.
While a simple idea at heart, this assignment structure conveys some key notions to students. First, it encourages them to think of history as an applied field with different professional pathways, products, and audiences. When one also incorporates ongoing discussion of professionalization and five-year plans, as I did in this course, it helps students think actively about their engagement with history and their pursuit of a professional path, rather than treating it as a passive set of developments one falls into. Second, treating these three (or more) paths as co-equal sends a strong signal that there is not a “Plan A” and “Plan B,” but that there are a number of equivalent professional paths open to someone with an advanced degree in history. Third, it also responds to student needs and goals. If an MA student has a clear goal of becoming a primary or secondary school teacher post-degree, why not provide them with tools now that can be applied later, by demonstrating how historical theory and methodology can and should inform course design at every level?
Of course, a flexible assignment structure cannot solve all of the discipline’s challenges. But perhaps such structures will force both faculty and students to confront the realities facing history graduate students, helping to both acknowledge and legitimize their goals. If students are equipped for multiple paths through the development of multiple skill sets, and these possible paths are treated as equally valid and valuable, perhaps this would be a small step away from the idea that we ought to “fix” the jobs crisis and toward reframing who historians are, what they do, and what paths they take.

UC celebrates record graduating class at commencement
Uc kicks off three days of ceremonies at fifth third arena.
The University of Cincinnati celebrated its largest graduating class in its 205-year history during three days of commencement ceremonies.
Thousands of friends and family filled Fifth Third Arena on Friday for the first two undergraduate ceremonies. UC on Thursday celebrated its doctoral hooding and master's recognition ceremony.
Commencement concludes with a third undergraduate ceremony 10 a.m. Saturday. Tickets are required for all guests. The arena allows only clear plastic bags.
In his commencement address, UC President Neville Pinto noted that the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 forced the cancellation of many high school graduations across the country.
“I recognize that for some of you, this is your first graduation ceremony,” he said. “So I want you to have a fun and enjoy this for both graduations.”
Pinto quoted 1980s cultural icon Ferris Bueller in urging graduates to embrace the important things: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
Pinto told graduates to make time for themselves to think and reflect — moments of mental rest that creative geniuses from Albert Einstein to Lin Manuel Miranda credit for their greatest inspirations.
And he closed with the abiding philosophy of writer Henry David Thoreau, who spent two years contemplating the world from a tiny cabin next to a Massachusetts pond: “ I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, to discover that I had not lived.”

About the spring class of 2024
UC will confer 7,521 degrees to 7,391 students this weekend. (Some students are earning multiple degrees.) Both represent new records dating back two centuries at UC for a single graduating class, based on preliminary figures from UC's Office of Institutonal Research.
UC will award 539 associate degrees, 4,549 baccalaureate degrees, 252 doctoral degrees, 1,886 master’s degrees, 3 micro-credentials and 292 professional certificates.
This year 15% of graduates are first-generation college students. And 210 students come from Cincinnati Public Schools. Nearly 3% of grads are U.S. veterans or dependents of veterans.
New this year, three students will graduate from UC’s micro-credentialing program as electronic health records specialists. UC also will celebrate its first spring graduating class in the new master’s of legal studies program.
The spring class of 2024 has the largest-ever percentage of master’s and doctoral graduates, representing more than 28% of graduates. And nearly 15% of grads participated through distance learning programs.
Graduates hail from 84 of Ohio’s 88 counties, a new record. They come from all 50 states and 81 countries as far away as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the Philippines and Japan.
Women represent 56% of the spring class of 2024. And 57 grads will celebrate their birthday during the three days of commencement.

Marking milestones
In her student address to undergraduates, UC College of Engineering and Applied Science graduate Ritika Joshi said her classmates all belong to a special community.
“Each of us has embarked on our own wild ride, navigating twists, turns and unexpected detours to arrive on this incredible day,” she said. “Here we are today, united as Bearcats and bound by our victories. ”
Joshi, a computer science major, referenced UC's motto, Juncta Juvant , or strength through unity.
“UC has prepared us for the global stage with the empowering mantra Next Lives Here by providing transformative co-ops, global opportunities, cutting-edge research and lifelong connections through student organizations,” she said. “We are eternally grateful for these invaluable experiences.”

Notable awards
Pinto surprised UC College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services Dean Lawrence Johnson with the President's Award for Excellence. Pinto said it marks just the fourth such award he has presented during his seven years as president.
“I consider it the highest honor that I can bestow as a president,” Pinto said.
Under Johnson, the college has seen its enrollment triple in size over the past two decades.
Johnson is known to many at UC for hosting an annual back-to-school barbecue on UC's Uptown Campus. Pinto announced that the site of those welcome-back parties is now called the Lawrence J. Johnson Lawn.
“What we will miss most about you doesn't come from your kitchen. It comes from your heart,” Pinto said. “It is your leadership, your compassion and your love for learning.”
Pinto also recognized graduates Shelby Hetzer, Mia Morales and Rebekah Littlepage, recipients of UC's Presidential Leadership Medal of Student Excellence. This year's other recipients are Lance Entsuah, Gibin Mannathikulathil Raju and Maya Goertemoeller.

Carl H. Lindner College of Business graduate Cesseli Chambers-Thacker presented the student address to her classmates during the Doctoral Hooding and Master's Recognition Ceremony.
“Some of us are the first in our families to reach this milestone while others come from a long line of scholars,” she said.
“Though our paths may differ, they converge at this triumphant moment of unity. We stand together not only as graduates but as resilient individuals and architects of change, laying a foundation for a just and sustainable global society,” she said.
“At the University of Cincinnati, 'Next Lives Here,' which means we are next. Congratulations, Bearcats! We did it.”

Making up for lost time
UC graduates such as Raya Fitch missed out on celebrating their high school graduations in 2020 after the pandemic prompted the cancellation of public events.
Fitch studied political science in UC's College of Arts and Sciences. She said it was important both to her and her family to celebrate her accomplishments together in person now that they could.
“It means a lot to me,” she said.
UC Blue Ash nursing student Madeline Martin posed for photos for her family in the plaza outside Fifth Third Arena. She and her classmates likewise missed out on her high school graduation in 2020, she said.
“I didn't get to walk in graduation, so this is extra special," she said.
“She got her diploma from the principal in her driveway," her mom added.

Quarterbacks will be tough to pick in the 2024 NFL draft. 25 years of drafts show that.
Dozens of mock drafts leading up to this week's NFL draft have suggested that five quarterbacks could be selected in the first round. Some even speculate as many as six QBs could be drafted Thursday night.
It's no wonder considering how important the position has become to a team's offense and often the team's success.
But just because a quarterback is drafted in the first 32 picks of the NFL draft doesn't guarantee that he will be a franchise quarterback. A simple analysis of drafts since 1999 found just two of every five first-round quarterbacks have been their team's long-term answer.
Mock draft tracker: 5 possible first-round picks for every team in the 2024 NFL draft
Searchable NFL 2024 draft order: Easy way to see every teams' picks from Rounds 1 to 7
How many QBs have been linked to teams in USA TODAY's 2024 mock drafts
In USA TODAY's mock drafts since January, our experts have predicted no fewer than four quarterbacks – possibly three in the first three picks – will be taken in this year's first round.
Unable to view our graphics? Click here to see them .
2021's QB class looks more like Zach Wilson than Trevor Lawrence
The last time five quarterbacks (three in the first three) were selected in the first round, Trevor Lawrence was the top pick. He's already led the Jacksonville Jaguars to the playoffs in 2022 and earned a Pro Bowl nod.
Zach Wilson and Trey Lance were selected second and third in the 2021 draft. Both already landed on USA TODAY's list of 50 biggest busts along with Justin Fields, now with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Mac Jones. Of all 10 quarterbacks taken in 2021, Jones (15th by New England) is the only other player to make a Pro Bowl, but he most likely will back up Lawrence this season in Jacksonville .
Pro Bowl selections as a measure of a quarterback's "success"
Pro Bowl selections offer a relatively consistent measure of players who have risen above their peers. During the past decade, about 10 quarterbacks – nearly a third of the league – have been named to the Pro Bowl annually.
USA TODAY compiled a list of the 74 quarterbacks taken in the first round of the NFL draft since 1999 and used Pro Bowls as an initial yardstick. Only 34 of those 74 quarterbacks, or 46%, have made one Pro Bowl. We also factored in longevity and playoff data from Pro Football Reference.
How often NFL teams hit on 1st-round quarterback selections
What about the other nfl draft classes.
While 1983 remains the year of the quarterback , half of the quarterbacks selected that year are in the Hall of Fame, one earned two Pro Bowl honors but still two fell short.
The class of 1999, which featured a top-three trio, is more representative of teams' successes, or lack there of, in drafting their franchise quarterback.
Of the three, Donovan McNabb, taken second by Philadelphia in 1999, earned the franchise quarterback moniker, while the top pick that year Tim Couch (Cleveland) and Akili Smith (Cincinnati) were both out of the NFL within five years.
Of the other two quarterbacks picked in the first round, Daunte Culpepper (No. 11 by Minnesota) earned three Pro Bowl nominations while Cade McNown (No. 12 by Chicago) played 25 games over two seasons.
It's not just about the first-round picks
As many as 20 quarterbacks could be drafted , according to the NFL, between Thursday and Saturday, and maybe one of the league's next top quarterbacks will be found in later rounds.
The obvious example: Tom Brady, the best player picked in the last 25 years , or possibly ever, waited six rounds until he received New England's fateful call in 2000. The only quarterback picked in the first round that year: Chad Pennington, 18th, by the Jets.
Perhaps 2012 might serve as a comparison to this year's class.
While Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III drew much of the attention at the top, three others have enjoyed longer, more productive careers: Ryan Tannehill, Russell Wilson and Kirk Cousins. Nick Foles, another 2012 pick, doesn't have an impressive career stat line, but, like Wilson, has a Super Bowl ring.
Quarterbacks in the 2024 draft
All signs and mock drafts point to the Chicago Bears taking 2022 Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams from Southern California with the first pick of the draft Thursday night.
The 2023 Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels from LSU could hear his name called second by the Washington Commanders. If not, the Patriots would likely select Daniels with the third pick should the Commanders take Drake Maye from North Carolina. J.J. McCarthy from Michigan has also been considered a top-five or -six pick.
Here are the 14 quarterbacks who were invited to attend the 2024 NFL scouting combine .

Houston Texans
Houston texans await selections with 42nd, 59th, and 86th overall picks in day 2 of nfl draft.
DETROIT, Michigan (KTRK) -- Houston Texans fans wish every year could be like last year in the NFL Draft.
In a matter of minutes, the Texans selected C.J. Stroud and Will Anderson Jr., and everything changed for football in Houston.
The second and third rounds of the draft don't come with the media hype and sizzle, but Friday is the night the Texans can add more talent to what everyone hopes will be a Super Bowl contender.
After an offseason blitz that saw the Texans add high-profile talents like Stefon Diggs and Danielle Hunter, DeMeco Ryans summed up his approach to the draft while working in tandem with general manager Nick Caserio.
"Just because we've added guys at a lot of different positions, that doesn't stop us from evaluating every position and looking at every avenue to upgrade our team and continue to get our team better," Ryans said.
The Texans' track record of recent success in the second and third rounds started with rising stars like Nico Collins, Tank Dell, Jalen Pitre, and Christian Harris. All are now viewed as cornerstones of one of the best young rosters in the NFL.

The Texans can afford to wait to make their selections at 42nd and 59th in the second round. Or they can move up with another aggressive move from Caserio and his front office.
Caserio didn't shy away from his reputation as someone more than willing to make draft-day trades.
"We've always been open-minded, flexible, and adaptable. Movement is contingent, really player-driven," Caserio said.
In other words, if the Texans see a player they want, they'll move up to get him.
Day 2 action of the 2024 NFL Draft is underway on ABC13.

Chicago White Sox Call Up Journeyman Outfielder Tommy Pham, DFA Kevin Pillar
The struggling Chicago White Sox made a change to their outfield depth chart Friday, bringing recent free agent acquisition Tommy Pham up from the minors.
- Author: Sam Connon
In this story:
The Chicago White Sox have selected the contract of outfielder Tommy Pham, The Chicago Sun-Times' Daryl Van Schouwen reported Friday afternoon.
Pham signed a minor league deal with the White Sox back on April 15 . During his time with Triple-A Charlotte, the 11-year MLB veteran was batting .294, prompting his return to the big leagues.
According to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal , Chicago is designating outfielder Kevin Pillar for assignment to make room for Pham on the 26-man roster. Pillar, a 12-year MLB veteran in his own right, was batting .160 with a .650 OPS and -0.1 WAR.
Pham, 36, was once a late-blooming prospect who came up through the St. Louis Cardinals ' farm system. After getting picked in the 16th round of the 2006 MLB Draft, Pham finally made his big league debut in 2014 and exhausted his rookie eligibility in 2015.
In 2017, Pham placed 11th in NL MVP voting after batting .306 with 23 home runs, 73 RBI, 25 stolen bases, a .931 OPS and 6.2 WAR. The Cardinals eventually dealt him to the Tampa Bay Rays at the 2018 trade deadline, and then the Rays flipped him to the San Diego Padres at the end of the 2019 campaign.
That began the journeyman phase of Pham's career, even if he remained an everyday player through it all.
Pham appeared in 84.2% of his teams' games between 2017 and 2023, suiting up for the Cardinals, Rays, Padres, Cincinnati Reds , Boston Red Sox , New York Mets and Arizona Diamondbacks . In that span, he was a .260 hitter with a .785 OPS, averaging 17 home runs, 57 RBI and 16 stolen bases each year.
Just last year, Pham played a key role for the D-Backs in their surprise run to the World Series. He hit .279 with three home runs and a .772 OPS during the playoffs, earning a spot in Arizona's starting lineup in 16 of their 17 games.
Now, Pham is set to join a last-place White Sox squad off to one of the worst starts in MLB history. With All-Star Luis Robert Jr. on the injured list, Chicago's outfield depth chart is currently made up of Andrew Benintendi, Gavin Sheets, Robbie Grossman and Dominic Fletcher.
Pham is in a position to start right away, considering Sheets is the only one in that group with a batting average over .203 and an OPS over .548.
The White Sox open up a home series with the Rays on Friday, with first pitch scheduled for 7:40 p.m. ET.

Bears NFL Draft Picks 2024: Full list of Chicago’s draft picks for every round
2023 was another lackluster season for the Chicago Bears, finishing at the bottom of the NFC North with a 7-10 record (a disappointment, but, it should be noted, improvement on 2022’s bottom of the barrel 3-14 showing). After trading away the No. 1 overall pick last season, the Bears have opted to keep that top spot in 2024 , and will select first when the draft gets underway on Thursday, April 25 th .
The Bears are widely expected use that first pick on USC quarterback Caleb Williams . That expectation solidified when Chicago traded QB Justin Fields, the 11 th overall pick in 2021, to the Pittsburgh Steelers . In exchange, the Bears got a 2025 sixth-round pick that improves to a fourth-rounder if Fields plays 51 percent of offensive plays this season (Fields will be sharing the QB room with Russell Wilson, who arrived from Denver this offseason).
The Fields move silenced most of the chatter that the Bears would trade away the top pick again, or use it on a star receiver. But beyond the top overall pick, the team has additional capital to use, including the No. 9 overall pick and selections in the third and fourth rounds. After a productive free agency, the team is primed to make additional key moves via the draft to help pull a historic franchise out of the basement of the NFC North.
Wide receiver remains a key need for the Bears, who could look to add another skill player to join DJ Moore and Keenan Allen . Allen joined the Chicago roster via a trade with the Chargers in March after spending his entire 11-season career with the franchise. The Bears could also look to bolster their defensive line via the draft, ideally finding a complement to DE Montez Sweat .
