Doctors are an essential part of society and are crucial to maintaining and improving people’s health. Their profession is a blend of science, compassion, and unwavering dedication. This essay will examine the varied responsibilities of doctors and their significant influence on our lives.

Doctors are trained experts who are primarily responsible for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of illnesses. They devote years to perfecting their medical knowledge and skills, learning intricate ideas in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and other fields. Their diagnostic skills, which frequently involve cutting-edge technology and research, are crucial for diagnosing illnesses and creating winning treatment strategies.

Doctors are skilled medical professionals who also have a vast reservoir of compassion. They frequently see patients in vulnerable, frightened, or painful situations. This necessitates not only medical knowledge but also kindness and sensitivity. Patients and their families often find great comfort in a doctor’s reassuring presence, especially during trying times.

To safeguard the health of their patients, doctors put in endless effort, frequently going above and beyond what is required. They put in long hours, make crucial choices, and usually deal with emotionally trying circumstances. They remain steadfast in their dedication to the “do no harm” oath they make, despite the pressure and stress.

Doctors also play a crucial role in the advancement of medical research and knowledge. Their contributions to academic institutions, clinical trials, and medical discoveries are crucial in advancing healthcare. Through their work, previously untreatable illnesses are now treatable, and medical operations are becoming safer and more effective.

Doctors are essential in both preventive care and health education. They inform patients on leading healthy lives, preventing disease, and the value of routine checkups. Doctors assist in lowering the cost of disease in society by educating people and empowering them.

In conclusion, doctors are the foundation of our healthcare system because they combine scientific knowledge with empathy and commitment. All of us benefit from their tireless efforts to comfort, heal, and progress medical research. Let us honour the important role that doctors play in our lives by recognising their invaluable contributions to our health and by thanking them for their unwavering dedication to the protection of human health.

Doctors, who are frequently called “healers,” occupy a special and highly regarded position in society. They are the keepers of health, the ones who save people’s lives, and the ones who bring hope. In a society where illnesses are rife, becoming a doctor is more than just a decision to pursue a job; it is a calling, a vocation motivated by an unwavering desire to relieve human suffering.

The road to becoming a doctor is a challenging one that demands years of education and training. Typically, it starts with a bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, then medical school, which is nothing short of a test of wills. Medical students spend a lot of time learning about the complexities of the human body, including anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and a host of other topics that contribute to the complexity of medicine. Lectures, labs, and many hours of studying fill their days, which frequently go well into the night.

After receiving their medical degrees, doctors enter the world of residency, where they put their expertise to use while being closely supervised by seasoned mentors. This demanding time will put their physical stamina and mental fortitude to the test. They experience the most trying times in life, from hopeful births to urgent situations requiring quick judgements. They become skilled and caring healthcare professionals thanks to the essential experience they obtain during residency.

The duties of a doctor go beyond merely identifying and treating ailments. They assist patients in understanding their health conditions and preventative measures by acting as educators. They are counsellors who provide emotional help to people in need. They are ardent proponents of health equity, working nonstop to guarantee that everyone, regardless of socioeconomic status, has access to healthcare.

Although medical technology has advanced quickly in the modern era, the doctor-patient interaction is still at the centre of medicine. A doctor’s capacity to successfully listen, empathise, and communicate can be just as therapeutic as any drug. Patients frequently entrust these committed experts with their trust and, in some cases, their lives.

In their field of work, doctors deal with a variety of difficulties. They must commit to lifelong study because medical knowledge is constantly evolving. The rigours of the work can be emotionally stressful because they frequently have to make life-or-death decisions. Given that emergencies don’t adhere to a schedule, juggling work and personal obligations can be difficult.

Nevertheless, despite these difficulties, a doctor’s job is one of incomparable importance. They observe the human spirit’s tenacity and the wonders of contemporary medicine. They acknowledge the patients’ and their families’ sincere thanks as well as the joy of recovery.

To end this, a doctor’s career is more than simply a job; it’s a lifetime commitment to helping people heal and be cared for. They are the unsung heroes of society because of their commitment, selflessness, and knowledge. We must respect and support doctors in their noble goal to relieve pain and advance well-being as recipients of their unflinching service. Doctors exhibit the finest traits of humanity, including wisdom, compassion, and the ability to heal, and they make incalculable contributions to society.

Doctors all over the world are given the stature next to God. It happens so mostly because they are lifesavers who work tirelessly for mankind. Moreover, being a doctor is considered one of the most sought-after professions. People want their kids to become doctors and they instill this dream in them from an early age.

Doctors have a very noble profession. In addition, they are equipped with comprehensive knowledge and devices that enable them to diagnose and treat their patients with correct procedures. Doctors require medical staffs that help them in performing their treatment. They are very proficient and have proved their importance time and again for mankind.

The Medical Scenario of India

The medical scenario in India is renowned all over the world. The doctors originating from India are reaching new heights globally abroad. However, when we talk about the medical scenario within the country, we see how it’s quite worrying.

In other words, all capable and talented doctors are moving abroad in search of better job opportunities and facilities. Therefore, we see there is a lack of doctors in the country to cater to the ever-growing population.

But if we see on the bright side, we will notice how Indian doctors are very charitable in comparison to doctors of other countries. As India has been a country of tradition, the qualities are deeply rooted in our culture. This reflects in the medical scenario of the country as well.

The Degradation of Doctors

Although the medical field is evolving, there are still immoral practices in the field which makes it tough for patients to get the right treatment. Corruption has not spared this field as well.

India suffers from a high illiteracy rate which results in people fooling the citizens for money. There are many wrongs and unethical medical practices prevalent in India which brings a bad name to the country.

Moreover, the greed for money has resulted in various losses of lives of patients. The hospitals diagnose the patients wrongly and give them the wrong treatment. This results in even more worse results. The public is losing its faith in the medical field and its doctors.

As a result, this impacts the reputation of the medical field. Doctors must be more responsible and vigilant with the lives of their patients. The government must provide the public with good medical facilities which can bridge this gap. In addition, we must also come together to help doctors do their job better.

While people should trust doctors with life, a lot of mistrust is being spread off late. Doctors these days donā€™t carry out practice with the aim to cure the patients but to make money. People are suggested to get several tests done even if they visit for a simple medical problem. The government hospitals and clinics claim to provide medical services free of cost however there is a lot of corruption at these places as well.

Though India has a number of talented doctors however the healthcare sector here is not that good. Many qualified doctors these days are flying abroad to seek better opportunities. Aspiring doctors are also going abroad to study medicine and settle there.

Doctor Essay 2 (300 words)

Introduction

Doctors have been given a high status in our society. The medical profession is considered to be one of the noblest professions. It is also a profession that helps earn lucrative income.

Doctors are Life Saviour

Doctors are essential for any society. They are considered to be life saviours. In our routine life, we often encounter health issues that are beyond our comprehension. We require help from a doctor to understand the problem and also to get it cured. The condition may get worse without medical intervention. Doctors are thus considered to be life saviours. They spend numerous years of their lives studying medical science. Once they gain theoretical and practical knowledge about this field, they are given thorough training to handle the profession they are aiming to dive into.

The medical profession has evolved over the centuries and is still evolving. Medicines and treatments for various diseases and illnesses that were not available earlier have now been developed. Medical technology has also enhanced over the time. If we have good doctors and medical facilities in our vicinity it offers a sense of relief as we know we have instant help at hand.

How to Become a Qualified Doctor?

Several students aspire to take to the medical profession and become a doctor. The first step towards this is to appear for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) that is conducted each year to select students for MBBS and BDS courses in government and private medical institutes across the country. It is essential to have physics, chemistry and biology as core subjects during your 11 th and 12 th standard if you want to appear in this entrance test. A minimum percentage criterion is also set. Doctor Essay 3 (400 words)

Doctors, in India, are given a high stature. However, the healthcare industry in India is not at par with that in the first world countries. Even though we have good facility to study medicine and also have a pool of talented doctors, there is still a long way to go.

Doctors and Healthcare in India

Here is a brief look at the condition of the healthcare industry and doctors in our country:

Numerous private nursing homes and hospitals are being set up in India. The irony is that none of these is being set up with the aim of serving the public. These are just there to do business.

The government has set up numerous government hospitals. Many of these have a good infrastructure however most are not being managed well. There is a lot of corruption at various levels in the healthcare industry. Everyone wants to make money even if it is at the cost of someoneā€™s health.

The staff employed at the government hospitals are also not committed to serve the patients properly. There are several cases wherein the reports get misplaced and medicines are not given timely to the patients. Besides, there is mismanagement when it comes to supply of medicines and medical equipments to the hospital.

Not only the patients, doctors also face problems in such a set up. The duty of the doctors is to check the patient, diagnose the problem, carry out treatment and monitor the condition of the patient. However, due to the shortage of nurses and support staff, doctors are forced to carry out various menial tasks as well. The time the doctors should spend in analyzing the reports and monitoring the patientā€™s condition is spent in tasks such as giving injections and taking the patients from one ward to another. This burdens the doctors with work and creates dissatisfaction among them.

Can we Trust the Doctors?

As mentioned above, the private hospitals and nursing homes are being set up with the aim of doing business and not with the intent to serve the public. This has been proved time and again by way of several cases of forgery. People in India hesitate visiting doctors these days because of trust factor. Many people prefer taking medicines for common cold, flu and fever at home itself as it is believed that the doctors may exaggerate the issue unnecessarily.

While one can avoid visiting the doctor for common cold and mild fever, it cannot be avoided if the situation worsens or if there is some other medical condition. It is important for the doctors to build a trust factor by doing their duty sincerely.

Doctor Essay 4 (500 words)

The field of medicine has evolved with time and so is the knowledge of the doctors. India is known to have discovered the cures for various illnesses from the ancient times itself. The miraculous medical practices practiced here by the vaids and hakims were known to render new life to people. They had their own ways of extracting cataract, performing dental surgery, plastic surgery and more.

Medical Practices in Ancient India

The art of performing surgery in ancient India was referred to as Shastrakarma. It is basically one of the eight branches of Ayurveda. As per the records available, Shastrakarma was being practiced in our country since 800 B.C. Shusruta, Charaka and Atraya were among the earlier Indian medical practitioners.

Ayurveda, the ancient science of medicine, is still preferred for the treatment of various illnesses. It is practiced in various parts of the country and people from far and wide visit these practitioners of ancient medicines for treatment. The term Ayurveda means the science of living long. Unlike the modern medicines, Ayurvedic medicines and treatments do not have any side effects. The Ayurvedic medicines are solely made from herbs and herbal compounds.

Need of Good and Responsible Doctors

India is known for its genius minds. Not only do people from various parts of the world visit our country to get treatments via the practice of ancient medical science, Ayurveda, the Indian doctors with knowledge about the modern day medical practices are also much in demand around the world. Since the medical degrees offered at the Indian universities are not recognized in many parts of the world, many medical aspirants from our country are now enrolling for medical courses abroad.

People are drawn towards the first world countries as they offer higher income and better standard of living. Several qualified doctors fly abroad from India each year to look for better job prospects. Many others are going to study medicine abroad with an aim of ultimately settling there. One of the basic requirements for improving the healthcare system in our country is good doctors. The government of India must take steps to improve the medical facilities in the country as well as to stop brain drain.

Why Aspiring Doctors are Flying Abroad?

The number of Indian students going abroad to pursue medical degree has increased over the years. There are several reasons that pull these students. Besides, better job prospects, the ease of getting admission abroad is also among the top reasons. The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) conducted in India to select students for medical and dental courses in medical colleges across the country is comparatively quite tough. Most students appearing for this test each year fail to get admission and thus so many of them choose to go abroad to pursue medicine.

The infrastructure of the medical colleges and research opportunities abroad are far better and so is the work condition of doctors.

While doctors in India are given high regard however the aforementioned reasons attract these professionals abroad. The government of India must take steps to provide better work conditions for the doctors.

Doctor Essay 5 (600 words)

Doctors are considered to be next only to God. This is because they give new lives to people. They are equipped with the knowledge and tools required to diagnose and treat various medical conditions. They perform treatments with the help of other medical staff. Patients are also given after care in the hospitals and nursing homes to help them recover.

How much Responsible are Doctors These Days?

People rely on doctors for ensuring their health and well being. They believe that they donā€™t have to worry about any medical issue as long as they have these professionals besides them. Doctors offer a sense of security. However, some of the incidents that have come to limelight over the last few decades have shaken peopleā€™s faith in this noble profession.

Now, the question is how much responsible are doctors these days? While people these days have started mistrusting these professionals and they have all the reasons to do so, we cannot generalize the whole thing. Each individual is different from the other. There may be some who use corrupt means however there are also many of them who act responsibly and donā€™t take this profession as just a means to earn money.

The Degradation of Medical Profession and Doctors

In technical terms, the medical profession has grown and developed drastically with the evolution of newer medical equipments and improved ways of dealing with different medical issues, it has degraded morally. India already suffers from several problems when it comes to the medical system (even though it has a bunch of some of the best doctors around the world) and this is topped with issues such as corruption to make the situation worse.

The citizens of India do not have any national health insurance system and this makes the private sector dominate the healthcare arena in our country. While the government has set up many government hospitals and nursing homes, their infrastructure and overall condition is poor and thus most people do not prefer going there. The government of India spends very less on healthcare. This is the root cause of corruption here. People are drawn towards the private sector that offers far better facilities and is also well maintained. However, the main aim of this sector is to make money rather than to treat the patients.

It is common for the doctors to suggest the patients to get all sorts of blood tests, X-rays and other tests done even if they approach them for a simple fever or cough. Doctors take advantage of the peopleā€™s need to regain health and their lack of knowledge about different medical conditions. Even if people cannot afford, they go for these tests for the fear that the problem may aggravate. Prescribing numerous medicines and health tonics has also become quite common. These are just a way to earn money. Some of these even have side effects on the patients but the doctors these days donā€™t seem to care. More problems for the patients simply mean more money for the doctors.

There have also been cases wherein people have been admitted to hospital and made to stay for longer than the required period just so that the hospital makes profit. People have also been mis-communicated about their illnesses just to extract money from them. Medical profession has become more of a business these days rather than a way to serve the people. Besides, ill practices such as black marketing of organs have led to all the more insecurity among the public.

It is sad to see the condition of medical system in the country. The government should take initiatives to improve this condition. Doctors must also act responsibly and maintain the dignity of this profession.

Essay on Doctor in 400 words

Doctors, in India, given a high stature.

Numerous private nursing homes and hospitals set up in India. The irony is that none of these is being set up with the aim of serving the public. These are just there to do business.

The government has set up numerous government hospitals. Many of these have a good infrastructure however most not being managed well. There is a lot of corruption at various levels in the healthcare industry. Everyone wants to make money even if it is at the cost of someoneā€™s health.

The staff employed at the government hospitals also not committed to serve the patients properly.

However, due to the shortage of nurses and support staff, doctors forced to carry out various menial tasks as well. The time the doctors should spend in analyzing the reports and monitoring the patientā€™s condition spent in tasks such as giving injections and taking the patients from one ward to another. This burdens the doctors with work and creates dissatisfaction among them.

Can we Trust the Doctors?

As mentioned above, the private hospitals and nursing homes set up with the aim of doing business and not with the intent to serve the public. This has proved time and again by way of several cases of forgery. People in India hesitate visiting doctors these days because of trust factor. Many people prefer taking medicines for common cold, flu and fever at home itself as it believed that the doctors may exaggerate the issue unnecessarily.

While one can avoid visiting the doctor for common cold and mild fever, it cannot avoided if the situation worsens or if there is some other medical condition. It is important for the doctors to build a trust factor by doing their duty sincerely.

The miraculous medical practices practiced here by the vaids and hakims known to render new life to people. They had their own ways of extracting cataract, performing dental surgery, plastic surgery and more.

Medical Practices in Ancient India

The art of performing surgery in ancient India referred to as Shastrakarma. It is basically one of the eight branches of Ayurveda. As per the records available, Shastrakarma practiced in our country since 800 B.C. Shusruta, Charaka and Atraya were among the earlier Indian medical practitioners.

Ayurveda, the ancient science of medicine, still preferred for the treatment of various illnesses. It practiced in various parts of the country and people from far and wide visit these practitioners of ancient medicines for treatment. The term Ayurveda means the science of living long. Unlike the modern medicines, Ayurvedic medicines and treatments do not have any side effects. The Ayurvedic medicines solely made from herbs and herbal compounds.

Need of Good and Responsible Doctors

India known for its genius minds. Not only do people from various parts of the world visit our country to get treatments via the practice of ancient medical science, Ayurveda, the Indian doctors with knowledge about the modern day medical practices are also much in demand around the world. Since the medical degrees offered at the Indian universities not recognized in many parts of the world, many medical aspirants from our country are now enrolling for medical courses abroad.

People drawn towards the first world countries as they offer higher income and better standard of living.

While doctors in India given high regard however the aforementioned reasons attract these professionals abroad. The government of India must take steps to provide better work conditions for the doctors.

Doctor Essay in 600 words

Doctors considered to be next only to God. This is because they give new lives to people. They equipped with the knowledge and tools required to diagnose and treat various medical conditions. They perform treatments with the help of other medical staff. Patients also given after care in the hospitals and nursing homes to help them recover.

India already suffers from several problems when it comes to the medical system (even though it has a bunch of some of the best doctors around the world) and this topped with issues such as corruption to make the situation worse.

People drawn towards the private sector that offers far better facilities and also well maintained.

There have also cases wherein people have admitted to hospital and made to stay for longer than the required period just so that the hospital makes profit. People have also mis-communicated about their illnesses just to extract money from them.

Iā€™m a Doctor. Dengue Fever Took Even Me by Surprise on Vacation.

A black-and-white illustration of an Aedes aegypti mosquito.

By Deborah Heaney

Dr. Heaney is a physician in Ann Arbor, Mich.

I hate mosquitoes so much that I take my own bug repellent to parties. But in early March, on a trip with my partner to the idyllic island of CuraƧao off Venezuela, I was caught off guard by insect bites after our bed-and-breakfast hosts said that mosquitoes didnā€™t usually appear until late summer.

Near the end of the vacation, my legs began to ache. After I couldnā€™t keep up with my partner on a snorkeling adventure, he pulled me from the water. My ribs felt broken, as if Iā€™d been smashed against large boulders in the sea. Later that day came intense fever, alternating with shaking chills.

Back in Michigan ā€” weak, nauseated and dehydrated from explosive diarrhea ā€” I ended up in the emergency department. Tests showed worrisome white blood cell levels and abnormal liver numbers. The physician assistant who saw me was perplexed; she gave me IV fluids and medication for nausea and sent me home.

A few days later I developed itching so severe that I couldnā€™t sleep. A bright red rash spread over both thighs and up my lower back. My brain was foggy, and my balance was so impaired that I would have failed a sobriety test. My primary care doctor had no answers. But as my head began to clear, it occurred to me to request a dengue fever test.

Two days later, the test was positive.

Despite my training in medicine, I was blindsided. Dengue, a mosquito-borne illness, is surging through Latin America and the Caribbean, including in Puerto Rico, where a public health emergency was declared last week. This year is likely to be the worst on record, in part because of El NiƱo-driven temperature spikes and extreme weather linked to climate change. As temperatures rise and precipitation patterns grow more erratic, the problem will get only worse.

But neither the traveling public nor our frontline health workers are prepared. Without urgent reforms to how we educate travelers, doctors, nurses and others ā€” as well as reforms to public health surveillance and early warning systems ā€” we will be doomed to miss textbook cases like mine. That means those infected with dengue will miss out on timely treatment, possibly even spreading the virus to areas where it was never found before.

The dengue virus, which is primarily transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, infects up to 400 million people every year in nearly every region of the world, but it is most prevalent in Latin America, South and Southeast Asia and East Africa. Most cases are asymptomatic or, like mine, are considered mild, although the aptly nicknamed breakbone fever often doesnā€™t feel that way. Some 5 percent of cases progress to a severe, life-threatening disease including hemorrhagic fever.

One malicious feature of dengue is that when someone is infected a second time with a different type of the virus, the risk of severe illness is higher. A vaccine exists, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends it only for children ages 9 to 16 who had dengue before and live in places where the virus is common. Thatā€™s because, paradoxically, if youā€™ve never had dengue, the vaccine puts you at greater risk of severe illness your first time.

Dengue outbreaks, which, in the Americas, tend to occur every three to five years , now appear to be expanding their geographic reach as temperatures climb . The Aedes aegypti mosquito has typically had difficulty surviving and reproducing during the winter in temperate climates. But in parts of Brazil, which is experiencing a dengue emergency , the thermometer no longer dips as low in the winter as it once did, allowing the bugs to reproduce year-round. Overall, Latin America and the Caribbean have had three times the number of cases this year as reported for the same period in 2023, which was a record year. Higher temperatures are also helping the virus develop faster inside the mosquito, leading to a higher viral load and a higher probability of transmission. And mosquitoes are benefiting from standing water from rains and floods that are growing more extreme in a warming world.

As the virus spreads globally, travelers are bringing infections back to the continental United States. Based on 2024 numbers to date, this year should show a clear increase of cases here at home compared with 2023, given that the typical dengue season hasnā€™t even started yet. There could also be local outbreaks in places like Florida, Texas and California, which experienced small ones in the past. As Dr. Gabriela Paz-Bailey, the chief of the C.D.C.ā€™s dengue branch, told me by email, ā€œIncreased travel to places with dengue risk could lead to more local transmission, but the risk of widespread transmission in the continental United States is low.ā€

But since testing is done only on a small fraction of cases, many are going uncounted. I was the one who requested that I be tested. Had I not been given a diagnosis, I would not be aware of my increased risk of severe illness if I am reinfected. Getting a diagnosis is crucial to inform those infected in areas where the Aedes mosquito lives so that the virus doesnā€™t spread further.

The growing risk means travelers to regions with dengue must be savvier: They can check local news and U.S. State Department advisories, bring an effective insect repellent and protective clothing and book lodging with air-conditioning or screens on the windows and doors. Though Aedes aegypti mosquitoes now live year-round in many locations and are pushing northward into new regions , thanks to climate change and other factors, there are still seasons when the risk is greater, and travelers might consider avoiding trips during those periods. Travel insurance with medical coverage may also be a useful precaution.

For medical professionals, this should be a warning. We need to start thinking about dengue as a possible diagnosis, not just a piece of textbook trivia. We should ask about recent travel when treating patients presenting with symptoms, especially symptoms not easily explained by other diagnoses.

Medical schools are gradually integrating climate change effects into curriculums . This is essential, since malaria, Lyme, West Nile and other insect-borne diseases are on the rise, as are other conditions like heat illness, asthma and allergies that are worsened by climate change. This work must accelerate, and training must include those of us who are already practicing. State medical boards should consider mandating continuing education on tropical emerging illnesses, as they do on many other pertinent topics.

After receiving my positive test result, I called the emergency department to leave a message for my previous provider about my diagnosis, assuming she had never before seen dengue. If we continue on this trajectory, Iā€™m certain this wonā€™t be her last case.

Deborah Heaney is a preventive, occupational and environmental health physician practicing in Ann Arbor, Mich. She also holds a masterā€™s degree in public health.

The Good Doctor suffered a major loss Tuesday.

Promos for Season 7, Episode 5 promised a “heart-stopping moment” — and boy, did it deliver. In the closing moments of “Who At Peace,”  Noah Galvin ‘s Dr. Asher Wolke was beaten to death in an antisemitic attack, as his boyfriend Jerome sat a nearby restaurant, waiting to propose.

Noah Galvin Leaving 'The Good Doctor' as Dr. Asher Wolke

When one of the assailants deduced that Asher was Jewish, the surgeon responded, “I am a Jew. A gay one, in fact, and I’m calling the cops.” He held his phone up to show that he’d already dialed 9-1-1, and the thugs went on their way.

That seemed to be the end of it. Rabbi Benjamin told Asher he’d call security, and told the doctor to “go get engaged.” They shook hands, and Asher walked back in the direction of his car, alone. That’s when the vandals reemerged. They snuck up behind Asher and struck a fatal blow to his head.

By the time Rabbi Benjamin found him, he was already dead.

Asher’s demise comes at the midway point of The Good Doctor’ s abbreviated final season. Its 10-episode farewell run resumes on Tuesday, April 9, with Episode 6, wherein “the team must deal with a mass casualty event that forces them to put aside their emotions following a recent tragedy.” You can watch a promo below:

Galvin joined The Good Doctor in Season 4 . Asher, an atheist with a God complex who left the Hasidic community at age 18, was one of six newbies introduced that season, along with Bria Samoné Henderson’s Dr. Jordan Allen. The pair was elevated to series-regular status for Season 5.

Asher began a relationship with St. Bonaventure nurse Jerome (played by recurring guest star Giacomo Baessato) during Season 5. Tuesday’s episode marked the second anniversary of their first date, on which Jerome intended to propose.

NOOOOOOOO! Other than the three mains, Sean, Leah and Glassy, Asher has been my favorite character since he came on the show. Couldn’t they have sent us all off with good things in this season, since they stupidly canceled the best show on TV? I can’t even bring myself to watch the episode. This is why I like spoilers.

So unnecessary. Just like Dr. Melendez.

Actually, it was necessary. It is a reflection of reality. And if gets some folks to recognize we have a major issue in the US with antisemitism, then bravo to the producers. What happened to the synagogue happens daily somewhere in the US. Antisemites accosting Jewish looking individuals, especially on college campuses is a daily occurrence. And sadly, there have been some deaths, including in California last year. For once, TV reflected the new reality. Upsetting, absolutely. Now, what will you do about it?

It’s just for the writers to feel good about themselves and actual Jewish and LGBTQ+ viweers to feel shocked, traumatised and sad.

or maybe its just a fact that this happens more than you think. And not just to jewish gay people. But people of colour as well. America is in a bad place and will be for a long while. and this is coming from someone who used to want to be an American!

Why do you think writers would feel .good about delving into hate and killing off a beloved character. It was awful. But it’s sadly reality. And that’s what makes it so tragic.

I agree with you. I hadnā€™t watched the preview for last nightā€™s episode so Asherā€™s murder was a real kick on the gut for me. But after reading your post I realize thatā€™s exactly what we needed – a visceral kick in the gut because violent antisemitism is indeed on the rise in the U.S. and in Canada. It was one of the most powerful and emotional moments of the series.

Couldn’t agree more Deborah.

There are other ways to address stuff like that. The writers basically just ruined the final season.

I couldn’t agree more. Terrible idea and badly executed. It was a lame way to address the issue.

I totally agree. We did not need that type of drama.

This was totally unnecessary and uncalled for! Asher deserved to reconnect with Judaism, get married, and have a happy life, just like Sean. This show went off the rails last year with the expulsion of the young doc who was addicted to opioids. Melendezā€™ death was just as idiotic. Trying to hard to replicate Greyā€™s Anatomy by killing off core characters. Why didnā€™t they just end the show after S6? Killing Asher off in a hate crime practically endorses the practice. Ugh!!!

You are so close to the point. Of course he deserves those things, as do all victims of hate crimes.

I loved Asher, he could be stern at times and lovable too. Truly capturing how a doctor should be.SOOO SAD THE WAY HE WAS KILLED!!

It’s another example of the “bury your gays” trope. People can argue all they want that this is a reflection of reality, but all it really means is that they can’t let a gay man have a happy ending on a show that doesn’t bear very much resemblance to reality in the first place.

Do not agree with “bury your gays” trope comment.

Killing Dr Asher Wolke was not necessary. He could have had a happy ending with his Life

I know. That was awful. I liked the Asher character a lot. Talk about a surprise twist that was a real gut shot. But then, it is the last season, so really the writers can take it anywhere they want and the anti-hate message was powerful, especially because it was so shocking. Poor Asher though.

Having a gay son, this ending left me heartbroken. Hate crime happens every day and as a mother it is a miracle I am ever able to find peace. Saddened to see this character go in such a dramatic way. Not sure I will keep watching.

It’s the last season anyways, and it’s half over

Life doesn’t always end happy. More TV shows are not tied up in a nice pink bow. Reality in television I think is a good thing because it causes us to wake up and realize what is happening in our own country.

They could have just beaten him up.

This is like when they killed Kutner on HOUSE

Yep. There wasn’t even much of a story with Kutner. It turned out to be yet another story about House not being in touch with his emotions. Not so much about Kutner. Though it did make the point that sometimes people take their own lives without leaving clues.

I’m really upset that you killed him off.You could have did it differently. I would have liked to see the couple get married and everyone deal with the racism. Not that you care. But, I’m not sure if I will watch the rest of the season.

Terribly shocking and sad. This will definitely change the rest of the show for me

What was the song at the end of the 4/2/24 episode of the Good Doctor? Also the artist and lyrics please.

Leonard Cohen Who by Fire. It’s based on the Yom Kippur liturgy.

And who by fire, who by water Who in the sunshine, who in the night time Who by high ordeal, who by common trial Who in your merry merry month of may Who by very slow decay And who shall I say is calling? And who in her lonely slip, who by barbiturate Who in these realms of love, who by something blunt Who by avalanche, who by powder Who for his greed, who for his hunger And who shall I say is calling? And who by brave assent, who by accident Who in solitude, who in this mirror Who by his lady’s command, who by his own hand Who in mortal chains, who in power And who shall I say is calling?

This song was played on a “Criminal Minds” episode when an evil serial killer abducts a detective’s daughter after he kills her dad.

Thank you for that.

Right now this whole world is just sad I feel sad everyday something new is always going on and it just doesn’t seem to be getting any better I hate to see it in another, 20 years from now and I’m glad I won’t be here to see it. I feel sorry for everyone that will so it was very hard to watch that the other night it’s just a big shock to me.

People need to grow up. It’s fiction, these aren’t real people. And it’s interesting that no one cares about the young wife with only 2 months to live.

Was she a series regular we had been watching for years? Or a patient on a medical drama where patients sometimes die?

Maybe this a just a TV series, but this is happening in real life right now because this a real issue regarding a lot of real people. The real life crimes against Jewish, Muslims, LGTBQ and many others because of color, gender, sexual preference, and others. THIS IS A Real LIFE thing that is happening now! The hate NEEDS to stop in real. I hate the way this show did this.

Ugh. Why do shows always kill off my favorite characters? It’s gotten to the point that I get mad rather than sad; a close call would have brought out more emotion from me. I would rather see Asher recovering and fighting the anti-Semitism and homophobia while embracing his own engagement and marriage. That would draw as much if not more attention than ending his time on the show, even though dramatic. Asher is a really dynamic character (who hasn’t grown much lately, to my chagrin), and it would have been great to see him explore his faith and ethnicity in a non deadly storyline.

Asherā€™s story could have been a series on its own. But they killed him off so no.

I don’t watch to many series but the Good Doctor is my favorite. The story lines are so real to life and the one last night was no exception. I was shocked and couldn’t stop crying. I only wish that people could respect everyone’s differences and live in peace. Thank you for covering this important stories. George

What was the point of killing Asher? This season is not good. Can we move on From Sean being mean to Charlie? I didn’t even finish the episode because I’m so annoyed by it.

I hate that they killed off Asher. He was just starting to get his happy ending. Why do tv shows kill off good characters? Itā€™s normal now and not as impactful as it once way. More effective to have him lean on his faith and Jerome to recover. Ugh hate this!

What faith? He’s an atheist.

Even if you didn’t watch the episode to see what was established concerning that, what part of “The scene in question came at the tail end of an episode that saw Asher reconnect to his Judaism.” are you not grasping?

He was, in this episode, getting back to his faith. That would have been a story to tell.

No, Judaism is an ethnicity, not just a religion. There are atheist rabbis. He was reconnecting with who he is.

You obviously didn’t watch the episode where he was killed

šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ’” I was screaming “NO, NO, NO” so loudly at the tv that I’m surprised the neighbors didn’t call 911 thinking I was being attacked! Devastated as I am, I understand that they needed to make a big statement because of the horribly high incidents of Jewsh hate crimes in the world today. My heart wishes there was no reason for this storyline to have been written, but I hope it’s impact will cause reverberations that will inspire more people to rise up against Jewish hate.

Hate toward and entire race/group…is because people are trained/taught to be that way. Condemn everyone because of what a few do…ho is a human trait like this stopped?

Asher announced to them he was gay. They did not attack or kill the rabbi. I think this was an LGBTQ attack. Asher was feeling so empowered he gave them what they needed to fulfill their hate towards that LGBTQ community.

I get that the writers wanted to make a statement re: how prevalent violent anti-semitism has become, but this is just bullshiht. Couldn’t let Asher and Jerome have their happy ending and Jordan become godmother/auntie to their future child(ren), huh.

Sorry they had to kill off asher, but this storyline is what happens in the world. To those ‘fans’ who hate what the writers are doing…why did you start watching in the first place? Ppl get killed off shows all the time. Hate this episode so much, sorry you wasted your time watching. Just stop watching now. No need to put yourself through the rest of the show til the finale…which you’ll probably hate too. I’m in for the rest of the final season. Not matter who the writers kill off.

I think the point is that not all of us get happy endings. In fiction, in TV shows, we wanted to all and Happy and resolved. But just as they are bringing autism to the Forefront and anti-semitism so many people don’t get the happy ending

I hate that they killed Asher. I am furious with the show now, and may stop watching. It was unnecessary and hideous.

I’m simply heartbroken. That was so not necessary. Final season or not, Asher has become a beloved character and his loss leaves us empty.

Iā€™m heart broken ! I loved Asher šŸ˜ Why ????

Was not expecting that to happen. So sad.i love this show.

Why? Just why did they have to kill him off, we are already losing one of our favorite shows, why was it necessary to kill someone off? Of all the dumb shows that are still on tv, trashy shows at that, why cancel this one šŸ˜© I think another network should pick this show up! Iā€™m angry he died and Iā€™m angry the show is being cancelled šŸ˜©

Why did he die? Could have just had him get married and ride off into the sunset!!!

Was absolutely NOT expecting that ending. I was getting nervous as the episode went on and I thought he or Jerome might be injured, or something might happen to the rabbi or the synagogue, and then we’d see the fallout from that next episode and see how Asher recovered or reacted to what went down. This is just…damn. . Jerome sitting at the restaurant waiting for Asher broke my heart.

Now if they would do the same thing to Schmidt on Greys.

Completely didn’t see that coming AT ALL. I was stunned and am still stunned and heartbroken. As for Jerome, I felt the same thing as the police cars went by the restaurant. A very emotional, hard hitting ending.

Having a hard time sleeping tonight…that was a horrible, believable scene. Such hatred can exist in this world. At least…he made peace with God before he died. What a shock.

It was shattering. Still in shock. I was looking for a site to commiserate, but took hours. Understand the need to show the heartbreak of antisemitism that is going on and they made their point. So senseless. Last time I felt like this Will Gardner was killed off The Good Wife. My heart hurts.

He’s an atheist … he doesn’t believe in God, and rightly so. He was only acknowledging his identity as a Jew. I too am an atheist Jew … there are many of us.

– Leans into the trope that LGBTQIA+ characters canā€™t get happy endings

– Takes inspiration from an incredibly sensitive real life conflict and handles it poorly

– A bad PSA at the end that reduces other issues of bigotry to just ā€œracismā€

Wtf are you talking about? The PSA didn’t reduce all bigotry to racism.

I went on the splc website and didnā€™t see anything about antisemitism or any other religiously charged hate. They are focused very much on racial based civil rights an important issue we still have to deal with, but a strange choice after an episode clearly focusing on an antisemitic (homophobic) attack

… really was horrible the way they killed him. Yes, that is real life. We see it every day in the news but maybe we could at least hope that there are happy endings occasionally!!! After the complaint about Shawn … I guess we will see him lose his job. I have a Dr. friend that was fired for the very same reason “hostile work environment”. The nurse lied, he had many witnesses that told the board that he was in the right. BUT they still fired him. The best show out there but they STILL canceled it what a waste. I would have watched it for another 7 years.

Have to agree this really leans into the trope of “killing your gays” for drama. However much it happens in real life this feels like a cheap/sloppy writing.

The Good Doctor since season 1 leaned heavily into and embraced the idea of being a nighttime soap opera. Of course, they would play to maximum effect in their final season. Let’s not forget they had Lim stabbed and bleeding to death (and the nurse) in a season finale then magically made them recover (cuz the show was not over yet). Here, they have no constraints – we are at the end. They can kill anyone they like for drama. And, in real life, hate crimes still happen. Was he attacked cuz he was gay? Jewish? Who knows. Notice the perpetrators were not portrayed as Muslim cuz they have a documented reaction now of what is going on in Gaza. Now that would have opened a can of worms! I think the underlying message is that this is sudden and senseless.

Exsctly! Well said!

Iā€™m a big fan of this show. Latest episode was sad not to mention unexpected. Sad to say that kind of hate and violence is still happening.

Devastated!

Are you guys crazy????? I love Asher! Don’t let him die! He needs a happy ending w Jerome!

Too late. Time for you to grow up.

Your views are well taken, but I don’t think sucker-punching anyone is a way to draw sympathy. It’s lowering oneself to the evil that exists in the world!!

Time for you to get a heart with some compassion!

I agree. Asher was one of my least favorite characters if for no other reason than all the whining he was almost always doing. In my opinion, his character was the steriotypical whiney Jew. They could have written his character to be a strong gay man instead of a whiney shemale. But that’s just my opinion.

As for his demise, it did reflect what’s going on in real life these days. May people of different races, creeds, sexuality die daily. Why not reflect that in a television show without going over the top about it, which they did very well. I don’t mind bringing real world events into a television series as long as they don’t beat us over the head with it in every episode.

You should have let him live you only had a few episodes left you should have let them get married what was the point of killing him off the show I understand you were trying to prove a point but instead of making him die you should have just let him be critical I was not happy with the ending it was very sad that you did that to him I think you should have let him get married and ended the series with everybody together

Cry harder. It’s fiction, they aren’t t real. (And reality is terrible, with 30,000 murdered Palestinians.) Time to grow up.

I think the series has run out of stuff to say. Sean and Lea as parents – (ho-hum), Glassman dating Lim’s mother (frankly who cares), Charlie as some pseudo-Sean revisited? Even the patients are not very compelling. My guess is Freddie Highmore is running with glee towards the exit.

Heartbreaking ending for a wonderful character. After a beautifully written segment featuring Asher’s relationship to his Judaism in a positive and spiritual light, the writers betrayed the viewers with his death. While I can appreciate the effort made to showcase escalating violence and antisemitism, I would have preferred to see him recover and fight for greater acceptance in our world—perhaps engaging his non-Jewish/non-Gay friends in the fight against bigotry and hate! And, by the way, while I appreciate the PSA focus at the end, viewers sould know that the sl is not primarily concerned with fighting antisemitism and homophobia. There are many other groups whose main concerns are exactly that! Even after the beautifully written script regarding religion, the writers give the message that a gay couple can’t have a happy ending and a Jewish synagogue can be desecrated with no repercussion from the law.

Spiritual? Asher was an atheist, and that didn’t change. If God existed, why would things like this happen? Sheesh.

Glad you mentioned the PSA. I went on the splc website and was surprised I didnā€™t see anything about antisemitism or any other religiously charged hate. i donā€™t understand why they would choose them as the website/group to link with this episode

Went on the splc website didnā€™t see anything about antisemitism or any other religiously charged hate. Weird to choose them as the website/group to link with the episode

After Asher assisted a patient’s wedding, he drove the rabbi back home, where they encountered a couple of thugs vandalizing the synagogue. Asher told them to leave and they would not have a problem with the first assailant saying, “What do you care?”

After believing everything had been resolved and there would be no problems, the couple of thugs returned and struck Asher’s head, leaving him for dead.

The next episode of  The Good Doctor airs on Tuesday, April 9 at 10 p.m. ET and it’s titled “M.C.E.,” where “the team must deal with a mass casualty event that forces them to put aside their emotions following a recent tragedy.”
