Throughout the DBA, you will cover essential concepts of business management and research, including management and administrative theories, research and business models as well as research methods. From this, you will develop problem-solving and decision-making skills which are vital for successful management in the business sector. Additionally, you will learn how to apply management research techniques and concepts to the drafting of a business-related thesis.

The last two years of the programme will be dedicated to carrying out research and preparing a dissertation on a relevant topic of your choice. Our unique approach to the DBA involves both experienced academics and senior business professionals to help mentor your through your research.

You will also have the option to learn German.

The course is delivered 100% on-campus with full access to state-of-the art facilities. Students will also have additional access to course and reading materials via the UNINETTUNO platform.

In addition, graduates on this programme can apply for exemptions from relevant professional examinations of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and the Institute of Chartered Accountants. • Was ist ein DBA? Ein Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) ist der höchste akademische Grad in der universitären Managementausbildung.  
• Ist der DBA in Deutschland dem Doktorgrad (oder einem internationalen PhD) gleichgestellt und darf ich den Titel "Dr." in Deutschland führen? Ja, der DBA ist als gleichwertiges Studium anerkannt. Ein DBA unterscheidet sich dabei vor allem durch die unmittelbare Anwendung der Lerninhalte in der Praxis, was auch eine Voraussetzung für den erfolgreichen Abschluss ist. Nach der derzeitigen Regelung darf die Kurzform "Dr." (ohne fachlichen Zusatz und ohne Herkunftsbezeichnung) geführt werden.  
• Wie ist der DBA-Studiengang strukturiert? Der DBA-Studiengang ist einzigartig in seiner Gestaltung und Struktur sowie der intensiven Betreuung der Studierenden. Er dauert etwa vier Jahre, mit einer maximalen Laufzeit von sieben Jahren. In den ersten drei Jahren finden insgesamt vier 5-tägige Workshops in Liverpool und Berlin statt. Hier wird der Forschungsprozess geplant und die Themen und Methoden präzisiert, die im Unternehmen umgesetzt werden sollen. Zudem lernen die Studierenden mehr über Datenerfassung und -analyse, das akademische Schreiben und nehmen am Kolloquium teil. Nach dem dritten Jahr finden keine Workshops mehr statt und Studierende konzentrieren sich auf die Fertigstellung ihrer Doktorarbeit und bereiten sich auf die Prüfung vor. Üblicherweise erhalten Studierende ihren DBA-Abschluss innerhalb von vier Jahren.

"Accredited is the part-time doctoral program "Doctorate in Business Administration", which is completed with the title "Doctor/Doctrix in Business Administration" (DBA). The title can be used either in the original abbreviation form "DBA" or in the form "Dr." without the subject and origin suffix in Germany. The doctoral program, which will be offered for the first time in the winter semester 2021/2022, comprises 120 credit points (CP) according to the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) and provides for a standard period of study of three years.

The initial accreditation shall be granted for a period of five years and shall end in accordance with sec. 3.2.4 of the "Rules for the Accreditation of Study Programs and for System Accreditation" (Drs. AR 20/2013 as amended on February 20, 2013) on September 30, 2027 .

No conditions are imposed on the doctoral program.

Als Promotionsmöglichkeit bieten wir Ihnen das Programm Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) an. Dieser berufsbegleitende bzw. berufsintegrierte Doktorstudiengang richtet sich an High Potentials relevanter Fachrichtungen mit idealerweise mindestens 5 Jahre Berufserfahrung. Das komplett englischsprachige Programm wird von School of International Business and Entrepreneurship (SIBE) in Kooperation mit der Edinburgh Business School (EBS) der Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh , Schottland, angeboten. Die jeweilige Promotion basiert auf einem eigenständigen Forschungs- bzw. Innovationsprojekt entweder zu den Forschungsschwerpunkten Leadership, Personality, Innovation oder zu einem unternehmenspezifischen Thema. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf einer anwendungsorientierten Forschung, die dazu beiträgt, unmittelbare Lösungen für Fragen aus der unternehmerischen Praxis zu liefern.

Der DBA-Studiengang ist auf drei Jahre konzipiert.  Er gliedert sich in eine Course Stage und eine Research Stage . In der Course Stage sind die drei Kurse  Research Methods 1 , 2 und 3 als Online-Kurse zu absolvieren, die jeweils mit einer schriftlichen Prüfung abgeschlossen werden. Ergänzend zu den den Kursen bietet EBS jeweils ein optionales Präsenzseminar an, das auf dem Campus in Edinburgh oder in Dubai abgehalten wird. Die Termine werden bekannt gegeben, sobald sie von EBS veröffentlicht wurden. Bereits in der Course Stage beginnen Sie in engem Austausch mit Ihrem Betreuer, das Thema der Doktorarbeit auszuarbeiten. Nach erfolgreichem Bestehen der drei Kurse Research Methods 1, 2 und 3 haben Sie ein Research Proposal verfasst und reichen dieses bei der Edinburgh Business School ein.

In der anschließenden Research Stage beginnen Sie mit der Durchführung Ihres geplanten und mit Ihrem Betreuer abgestimmten Forschungsprojektes. Sie arbeiten eigenständig an Ihrer Doktorarbeit, erheben Daten und werten diese aus. Ihre Promotionsfortschritte werden während der Research Stage durch die Annual Review Meetings evaluiert. Dies erfolgt durch zwei Teileinreichungen Ihres Manuskripts, die Sie in einem Annual Review Meeting präsentieren und welche im Anschluss an Ihre Präsentation begutachtet werden. Darüber hinaus verfassen Sie einen Personal Development Plan und haben die Möglichkeit, sich einem Research Center anzuschließen. Am Ende der Research Stage reichen Sie Ihre schriftliche Doktorarbeit ein und verteidigen diese mündlich vor einem Komitee in Edinburgh.

Auswahlverfahren

Das Auswahlverfahren zum DBA-Programm wird mehrstufig durchgeführt. Nach einer formellen Prüfung Ihrer Unterlagen führt das DBA-Team mit Ihnen ein erstes Telefonat, dem dann ein erstes persönliches Gespräch mit dem potentiellen Betreuer Ihrer Doktorarbeit folgt. Im Anschluss daran erfolgt die Entscheidung über Ihre Aufnahme in das Studienprogramm des Doctor of Business Administration.

KODE®-Einschätzung

Im Falle einer positiven Entscheidung schließen wir die KODE®-Einschätzung an. Diese dient als Instrument der Kompetenzdiagnostik und -entwicklung und wurde nach DIN 33430 von einem unabhängigen Institut geprüft. Es werden Aufgabenstellungen behandelt, die grundlegend für die Arbeitsanforderungen sind. Die KODE®-Einschätzung ermöglicht uns einen Überblick Ihrer Kompetenzen und Erfahrungen, um eine fundierte Entscheidung zur endgültigen Zulassung zu unserem DBA-Programm treffen zu können. Zudem bietet die Einschätzung Ihnen eine sehr gute Basis für Ihr eigenes Stärken- und Schwächen-Profil und hilft Ihnen dabei, Ihre Kompetenzen fundiert weiterzuentwickeln.

Kosten & Finanzierung

Finanzierung des dba-programms durch den doktoranden:.

Das Thema der Doktorarbeit fokussiert die drei Forschungsschwerpunkte Leadership, Personality und Innovation bzw. die Spannungsfelder, die sich aus der Kombination dieser Themen ergeben.

Konditionen:

Die Anmeldegebühr beläuft sich auf 2.000 €, die als erste Überweisung zu tätigen ist. Die Programmgebühren enthalten:

• Intensive Betreuung durch eine/n Professor/in der SIBE
• Betreuung durch eine/n akademische/n Mitarbeiter/in der EBS
• Betreuung durch administrative Mitarbeiter der SIBE
• Bereitstellung von Kursmaterialien und Nutzung spezifischer IT-Programme (z. B. zur Datenauswertung im Rahmen der Doktorarbeit)
• Nutzung des Studierenden-Portals der EBS inklusive Zugang zur Online-Bibliothek und Recherche-Plattformen

Finanzierung des DBA-Programms durch ein Unternehmen:

Die Doktorarbeit befasst sich mit einem Thema aus der unmittelbaren Unternehmenspraxis des finanzierenden Unternehmens.

Teile der Programmkosten sind mehrwertsteuer- und sozialversicherungspflichtig.

* Die Anmeldegebühr beträgt 2.650 €, die als erste Rate fällig wird. Daher belaufen sich die Programmkosten im ersten Jahr auf 15.960 €. Die gesamten Programmkosten (3 Jahre) belaufen sich auf 45.000 €.

** Für Prüfungsleistungen und optionale Seminarbesuche sind zusätzliche Reisekosten einzukalkulieren. Die Übernahme der Reisekosten sowie der zusätzlichen Kosten für das Ausstellen von Urkunden, die Graduierung und ggf. Prüfungswiederholung sind zwischen dem Unternehmen und dem Doktoranden zu vereinbaren.

In Kooperation mit der Edinburgh Business School (EBS) bietet die FHDW ein anwendungsorientiertes Promotionsprogramm an, welches auf die Bedürfnisse von Industrie und Wirtschaft ausgerichtet ist. Das Studium ermöglicht Ihnen, unter Nutzung Ihrer beruflichen Erfahrungen eine industrieorientierte Forschungsarbeit zu erstellen, durch die Sie den in Deutschland anerkannten Doktorgrad („Dr.“) erlangen.  Der Promotionsabschluss wird von der Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Schottland, verliehen. Die Edinburgh Business School repräsentiert die betriebswirtschaftlich orientierte Post-Graduate School der Heriot-Watt University und ist mit über 21.000 Master-Absolventen aus mehr als 150 Ländern eine der renommiertesten Fernhochschulen für Master- und DBA-Programme.

Der erste Teilnehmer hat das FHDW-Programm zum „Doctor of Business Administration“ erfolgreich beendet. Adrian Engel nahm seine Promotionsurkunde von Prof. Dr. Eckhard Koch, akademischer Leiter des DBA-Programms, entgegen. Im Januar 2019 startete Adrian Engel mit sechs weiteren Teilnehmern in dem Promotionsprogramm, das die FHDW in Kooperation mit der Edinburgh Business School anbietet. Adrian Engel ist Business Analyst bei Diebold Nixdorf in Paderborn und hat zuvor bereits berufsbegleitend den Master an der FHDW absolviert.  Hier geht’s zum INTERVIEW

Die berufsbegleitende Promotion wählen Sie, wenn Sie über ein mit mindestens „gut“ abgeschlossenes Master-, MBA- oder Diplom-Studium in den fachlichen Ausrichtungen BWL, Business Management, Management, Volkswirtschaft, IT-Management oder in vergleichbaren Studiengängen verfügen. Das DBA-Programm ist praxisbezogen und setzt eine mehrjährige Berufs- und Führungserfahrung voraus.

• 3 - 5 Studienjahre

1. Studienjahr

• Teilnahme an 3 Fernkursen zum Thema „Doctoral Business Research“ (DBR I – DBR III) inkl. Vorbereitungsseminar und Examination
• Identifikation und Erarbeitung eines Research Proposal mit beratender Unterstützung durch Professoren der FHDW
• Seminar “Topic Finding and Coaching”

2 & 3. Studienjahr

• Bearbeitung des Promotionsthemas mit intensiver Betreuung durch einen Supervisor
• Besuch der Seminare „Scientific English“ und „Leadership and Personality“
• Regelmäßige Meet-ups der DBA-Gruppen untereinander zu Promotionsthemen und Fortschritt ihrer Arbeiten inkl. Feedback seitens der Professoren
• Einreichung der Promotionsarbeit
• Bei Bedarf kann die Promotion auf bis zu 5 Jahre verlängert werden
• Begutachtung der Arbeit durch das Kommittee

Im Idealfall reichen Sie Ihre Promotion nach drei Jahren ein. Um die deutsche Anerkennung für den Dr.-Titel zu erhalten, müssen Sie mindestens drei Jahre Promotionsstudium nachweisen.

DBA Doctor of Business Administration – die höchste Qualifikation, die in dem Bereich Wirtschaft/Management erreicht werden kann. Unser DBA richtet sich an motivierte Leistungsträger und bietet ihnen die Möglichkeit, im Rahmen ihrer Tätigkeit modernste Forschung und Entwicklung in ihrem Beruf voran zu treiben.

Es handelt sich um ein internationales Programm, das berufsbegleitend online durchgeführt wird, sodass zur Teilnahme an dem Programm kein Ausstieg aus dem Beruf erforderlich ist.

Das DBA-Programm wurde nach den folgenden Kriterien konzipiert und entwickelt: der britischen Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) Doctoral Degrees Characteristics (2011) und nach dem Framework for Higher Education Qualifications (FHEQ 2008) Qualification Descriptors und es wurde gemäß UK Level 8 (Doctoral) Standard evaluiert.

Der DBA-Abschluss wird von der Pôle Paris Alternance (PPA)  Business School verliehen. Sie gehört zu den Grandes Écoles Spécialisées, also den französischen Eliteschulen, die in dem Netzwerk Reseau GES – Grandes Écoles Spécialisées , organisiert sind. Die Spezialität der PPA ist es, Führungskräfte auf höchstem Niveau auszubilden. Dies belegen insbesondere die französischen Hochschulrankings.

Die Dauer des DBA Programms hängt von individuellen Faktoren aber, dauert berufsbegleitend aber erfahrungsgemäß ca. 1,5 – 2 Jahre.

Der erste Teil des DBA Programms umfasst einen „Research Methods“ Kurs, ein Online-Kurs, der es den Studierenden ermöglicht, die für dieses Studienniveau erforderlichen Forschungsfähigkeiten zu entwickeln. Der Kurs erfordert die Absolvierung von acht zeitlich flexibel getakteten Modulen. Sie können nach eigenem Zeitplan bearbeitet werden, in Übereinstimmung mit anderen Verpflichtungen.

Die Module des „Research Methods“ Kurses umfassen: – Kritische Analyse Teil 1 (Critical analysis part I) – Kritische Analyse Teil 2: Die kommentierte Bibliographie (Critical analysis part II: The annotated bibliography) – Vorläufige Literaturrecherche (Literature review) – Veröffentlichung der Literaturübersicht (Publishing the literature review) – Methodik (Quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods design) – Befragungsdesign und -analyse (Survey design and analysis) – Reflexion (Reflection) – Forschungsantrag (Detailed research proposal)

Am Ende des ersten Teils nach ca. 6 Monaten erstellen die DBA Studenten ein „Research Proposal“ mit einem Umfang von ca. 10.000 Wörtern und verteidigen dies in einem Kolloquium.

Im zweiten Teil fahren sie mit der Erstellung der Abschlussarbeit fort, die einen Umfang von ca. 50.000 Wörtern haben sollte. Sie erheben Daten und analysieren diese und verfassen ihre Abschlussarbeit. Dabei werden sie während des gesamten Prozesses online betreut (online supervision).

Am Ende des zweiten Teils steht die mündliche Verteidigung der Abschlussarbeit in einem Kolloquium.

Sie haben die Option einer Einmalzahlung in Höhe von 14.900 € oder Ratenzahlung (1. Jahr: 8.000 €, 2. Jahr: 8.000 €)

Die Studiengebühren und der Studienaufwand für das DBA-Studium sind i.d.R. voll steuerlich absetzbar.

Voraussetzung für die Zulassung zum DBA-Studium sind ein guter Master-Abschluss mit mindestens 90 ECTS und Minimum vier Jahre einschlägige Führungserfahrung.

DBA Acceptance in Germany - how to find the right program

first of all, my compliments for your graete expertise site. I red most oft you articles and would like to start a conversation about acceptance of DBA programs in Germany (and of cause countries other than the country you get your DBA from).

In this post http://www.fernstudium-infos.de/weiterbildung-studium-allgemein/23702-anbieter-fuer-dba-doctor-business-administration-2.html you wrote i.e. about the IE Business School in Madrid and that their doctoral degree is not accepted in Germany since the IE itself is not accepted by the Spain government. And that the accredition is no guarantee for acceptance.

My concrete question is how I can find the right program accepted in Germany.

I have a MSc degree (dipl.-inf), no MBA, have been working 8 years as department head and now since 5 years as manager in large SAP projects. So SAP business research would be one oft my favorite research areas for the DBA thesis, too. Do you have ans idea in which business school I could combine these subjects?

Dear Elfarid,

thank you for your question. The general rule of thumb is that German authorities accept a degree if this degree is accepted in the home country of where the university or degree-granting school in general is accepted.

The primary address to find this our for Germany is ANABIN . here you can search for Institutions and inform yourself about their status. H+ means accepted, H- means not accepted, and H+- means partially accepted or not clear.

IE is H+- because some of its programs are accepted and others are still in the process. For the PhD, for instance, you do 2 years of course work and finish them with a comprehensive exam. People who started the PhD some years ago, received only a certificate for these two years. The new PhD students receive a Master of Science in Management Research that is accepted due to an accreditation procedure vis-a-vis the Spanish authorities.

The PhD itself, however, is not accepted officially. Practically, many universities and primarily the private ones may accept the degree in the sense that they appreciate your degree and employ you as a Professor. But in Germany and countries such as Portugal you may still not be able to include the "Dr." in your passport.

Similar for the DBA. Unless the institution or the program itself is recognized you may not be allowed to hold your "Dr." officially. Hence, if the "Dr." is important for you - which I perfectly understand - you may watch out for the respective schools. If the "Dr." in your passport is less important for you and your primary goal is a doctoral degree that qualifies you for teaching at a renowned international business school, you may ignore the acceptance of the DBA itself and instead choose a DBA from a very renowned institution (such as IE) whether this degree is officially accepted or not. With this second strategy, you trust in the school's reputation as a whole and that business schools where you want to teach accept your DBA degree because they accept your institution (they may even not know whether your degree is offically accepted or not).

I wanted to re-phrase this for everyone who is not familiar with this.

Now, if you want to search specifically for DBA programs that allow you to hold the "Dr." degree in Germany, a good starting point is Anabin. State universities in general and UK universities specifically grant degrees that are accepted. Hence, your DBA at Bradford, Cranfield, or Manchester will be accepted. Your DBA at ESB Reutlingen in cooperation with Portmouth will be accepted etc.

I'm using this thread because I have a similar question.

I'm very much interested in finding a program which is fully accepted in Germany, meaning I'd like to carry the "Dr.". As I am working in the industry, the teaching opportunity is not the most important criterion.

So here on your website I found a DBA programm at Horizons University in Paris. I already checked the ANABIN for the university but I could not find it at all. Does this mean, the DBA would be worthless for me? Or has the ANABIN simply not checked this university yet?

indeed, it seems as if the Horizon University is not listed at anabin. I would contact them via email or phone http://anabin.kmk.org/service/kontakt.html . Let me know about the results.

The key question will be: Is HU officially accepted in France? Their accreditation page at Horizons University at least says: "Horizons University is registered in: French Ministry of Education (number 0451674A)"- but you need confirmation from Anabin.

I just got the answer from Anabin: "Die Horizons University ist nicht dazu berechtigt, französische Hochschulgrade zu verleihen. "DBA" ist zudem kein französischer Hochschulgrad. Sie verfügt nach unserem Kenntnisstand auch nicht über eine Akkreditierung durch einen der maßgeblichen regionalen Akkreditierungsverbände der USA und ist damit auch in den USA keine staatliche anerkannte Hochschule."

So basically what Anabin is saying is that the Horizons University is not authorized to award any French academic degrees. Further they informed me that the DBA is not a French academic degree. Also, the Horizons University is not accredited by any of the relevant US accreditation associations and therefore not a state-recognized institution in the US.

What I get out of this is that I should be looking for a US or UK institution. Would you agree?

Thanks for this information. It depends on what you want.

If you want to get the experience of a DBA, you can do this from any institution that provides a good education. Worldwide renowned schools such as IE grants such a degree, for instance.

If you want to carry the "DBA" title behind your name, you can also do your DBA from any institution.

If you want the German "Dr.", however, you need the degree from an institution that is accepted officially in the country where the degree-institution is based.

It can be a DBA from the Reutlingen University, for example, as there DBA is granted by the University of Portsmouth. Or from other UK universities like Bradford in Bonn or Cranfield , Manchester etc. Or from any other institution in any other country as long as it is accepted officially there.

HU is fully approved and authorized by the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (updated on the website)

Further, the president of the private university told me that it has state recognition. All the programs are accredited by the ministry since HU is recognized and it gets annual controls.

The DBA is not an official French degree, but rather an international degree.

As long as HU is approved and recognized by the ministry there is no problem to carry the DBA without any problem. The academic degrees are officially accepted and recognized either in France or in Germany -> hint to Bologna process.

Ich wohne seit 2017 in Bayern. Ich promoviere in Betriebswirtschaftslehre an der Università Telematica Internazionale Uninettuno, eine Fernuniversität mit Sitz in Italien. Der Kursname lautet: "DBA - Doctorate in Business Administration".

Ich würde gerne wissen, ob ich am Ende meines Studiums den Titel Dr. hier in Deutschland führen darf. In der Anabin-Datenbank hat die Uninettuno-Universität den Status H+.

Voraussetzung für das Führen des deutschen Doktorgrads ist, dass der Titel im Ursprungsland - also in Italien - als Doktorgrad anerkannt ist.

Hochschulgrade aus Mitgliedstaaten der Europäischen Union (EU)1 oder des Europäischen Wirtschaftsraumes (EWR) sowie Hochschulgrade des Europäischen Hochschulinstituts Florenz und der Päpstlichen Hochschulen können in der Originalform ohne Herkunftsbezeichnung geführt werden.

Inhaber von in einem wissenschaftlichen Promotionsverfahren erworbenen Doktorgraden, die in den in Ziff. 1 bezeichneten Staaten oder Institutionen erworben wurden, können anstelle der im Herkunftsland zugelassenen oder nachweislich allgemein üblichen Abkürzung gem. Ziffer 1 des Beschlusses vom 14.04.2000 wahlweise die Abkürzung „Dr.“ ohne fachlichen Zusatz und ohne Herkunftsbezeichnung führen. Dies gilt nicht für Doktorgrade, die ohne Promotionsstudien und -verfahren vergeben werden (so genannte Berufsdoktorate) und für Doktorgrade, die nach den rechtlichen Regelungen des Herkunftslandes nicht der dritten Ebene der Bologna-Klassifikation der Studienabschlüsse zugeordnet sind. Die gleichzeitige Führung beider Abkürzungen ist nicht zulässig.

Entscheidend ist, dass der Titel nach den rechtlichen Regelungen des Herkunftslandes der dritten Ebene der Bologna-Klassifikation der Studienabschlüsse zugeordnet ist. Um sicher zu gehen, würde ich beim Bayerisches Staatsministerium für Unterricht und Kultus nachfragen - die fragen dann bei der KMK nach und geben Ihnen anschließend eine verlässliche Antwort.

For a DBA from the US, would it be recognized in Germany as a doctorate/ earn the title of 'Dr.' if it comes from an H+ institution like Florida or UNC Charlotte, or does the program need recognition in addition to the university itself?

the rules of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany from 2001 (still valid today) say:

You can hold the German Dr. title if you achieved a Ph.D. in the US from an institution that the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has classified as "Research University (high research activity)“ or „Research University (very high research activity)“. Does this help?

the document does not mention the DBA in the context of the US. Therefore, I cannot give you a general answer. You will have to conatact the ministery of culture and education of the respective federal state in Germany. They will evaluate the DBA of your US University then (more precisely, they will ask the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany) and let you know.

The Doctor of Business Administration DBA is awarded by Silpakorn University. This title is protected and officially accredited by the Thai Ministry of Education. Graduates are entitled to use the “Dr” prefix with their names in Switzerland with an additional reference to the awarding entity (For more information about the recognition of foreign degrees in Switzerland, see sub-section ‘What is a DBA Degree?’). The Master of Advanced Studies in International Management – which may be acquired additionally – is awarded by the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. This title is nationally protected under the regulations of the ‘Swiss Center of Accreditation and Quality Assurance in Higher Education’ in conjunction with the Central Swiss University of Applied Sciences and the academic regulations of continuing education programs at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts.

The two partner institutions, the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts and Silpakorn University, are two nationally and internationally accredited institutes of higher education, known and respected for the high quality of their teaching and research and their decades of success in professional education.

The Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts is institutionally accredited according to the Higher Education Funding and Coordination Act HEdA. The School of Business is international accredited with AACSB. 

Silpakorn University is considered and ranked as one of the premier state universities of Thailand and Southeast Asia. DBA vs. PhD: Was ist der Unterschied?

Das Doktoratsstudium stellt die Spitze der Bildungsleiter dar und die meisten Leute, die von einem Doktoratsstudium sprechen, meinen damit ein PhD-Studium. In der heutigen Welt, die sich auf spezialisierte Fähigkeiten, Problemlösungen und die Anwendung von Wissen auf reale Probleme konzentriert, bieten DBA-Programme jedoch einen völlig anderen Ansatz. In diesem Artikel gehe ich auf einige Unterschiede zwischen einem DBA und einem PhD ein.

Theorie vs. Anwendung

Beide Wege beinhalten Forschung, wenn auch auf sehr unterschiedliche Weise. Beim PhD liegt der Schwerpunkt mehr auf dem theoretischen Input und dem Beitrag zur Wissenschaft, während ein DBA mehr auf die praktische Anwendung der Theorien auf reale Probleme ausgerichtet ist. Der DBA, der sich an erfahrene Berufstätige richtet, zeichnet sich durch umfangreiche Lehrinhalte aus, die die Kandidat*innen befähigen, sich mit aktuellen Wirtschaftsthemen kritisch auseinanderzusetzen, eine breitere Perspektive zu gewinnen und Forschung sowie Datenerhebung effektiv zu betreiben. Ein PhD ist ein eher forschungsorientiertes Studium, bei dem es unwahrscheinlich ist, dass solche Inhalte gelehrt werden. Das Ziel eines PhD besteht darin, Lücken im vorhandenen Wissen zu finden und diese zu füllen, anstatt spezielle Lösungen für bestimmte Problemstellungen zu finden.

Praktische Unterschiede zwischen einem DBA und PhD

In der Praxis gibt es einige Unterschiede zwischen einem DBA- und einem PhD-Studium. An erster Stelle steht die Art der Durchführung. Ein PhD-Studium erfordert oft eine Vollzeitpräsenz und -konzentration auf ein bestimmtes Forschungsgebiet, in der Regel über einen Zeitraum von etwa vier Jahren. Bei den meisten DBA-Programmen handelt es sich hingegen um Teilzeitstudiengänge, bei denen die Kandidat*innen neben ihrer Vollzeitbeschäftigung Forschung betreiben. Für die Lehrmodule kommen die Kandidat*innen normalerweise an der Hochschule zusammen. An der Munich Business School (MBS) umfasst dies drei fünftägige Wochen, die gemeinsam von der MBS und unserer Partnerhochschule Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) durchgeführt werden.

Während PhD-Kandidat*innen finanzielle Unterstützung erhalten können, bieten DBA-Programme diese Möglichkeit nicht, da die Forschung parallel zu einer Vollzeitbeschäftigung durchgeführt wird und im Laufe des Prozesses sehr oft selbst Bestandteil der beruflichen Tätigkeit wird. Dies ist dank des problemorientierten Ansatzes und des „Endprodukts“ in Form einer neuen Theorie oder Praxis möglich, die in einem bestimmten wirtschaftlichen Kontext anwendbar ist.

Die Kosten sind ein weiterer Unterschied zwischen PhD- und DBA-Programmen. DBA-Studiengänge scheinen im Vergleich zu einem PhD teurer zu sein, aber man bekommt auch das, wofür man zahlt. Beim DBA-Programm der MBS und der SHU erhalten die Kandidat*innen zum Beispiel zwei Betreuer*innen von zwei renommierten Institutionen. Außerdem profitieren sie in den Lehrmodulen von der Expertise zahlreicher Spezialist*innen aus verschiedenen Wirtschaftsbereichen. Und schließlich haben sie Zugang zu einer größeren Bibliothek mit einer Vielzahl an Quellen, was in der Forschungsphase von Vorteil ist, da mehr zugängliche Informationen eine breitere Perspektive bieten.

Hintergrund der Bewerber*innen

Der letzte wesentliche Unterschied zwischen DBA- und PhD-Programmen ist der Hintergrund der Bewerber*innen. DBA-Studiengänge eignen sich für Personen, die durch ihre berufliche Tätigkeit Erfahrungen in ihrem Fachgebiet gesammelt haben. Typischerweise besteht eine Kohorte aus Personen mit fünf oder mehr Jahren Berufserfahrung, wovon mindestens drei Jahre in der Funktion der Teamleitung oder Budgetverantwortung stattfanden. Für die Zulassung gibt es keine (Dienst)Altersbeschränkung. Ausschlaggebend sind vor allem die berufliche Erfahrung, die Aussagekraft der Bewerbung und die Durchführbarkeit der vorgeschlagenen Forschung. Ein PhD-Studium eignet sich hingegen eher für diejenigen, die keine umfassende Berufserfahrung in einem Fachbereich haben und unmittelbar an ihr Masterstudium anknüpfen wollen.

Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass es drei wichtige Bereiche gibt, in denen sich ein DBA von einem PhD unterscheidet. Diese Unterschiede zwischen einem DBA und PhD bedeuten nicht, dass das eine besser ist als das andere, wenngleich sie für alle, die ein Promotionsstudium in Erwägung ziehen, ziemlich bedeutsam sind. Es mag zwar noch andere Faktoren geben, die einen DBA von einem PhD unterscheiden, aber die oben genannten sind mitunter die wichtigsten Unterschiede, die auch darüber entscheiden, welches Programms bezogen auf die individuelle Situation die bessere Option ist.

Dual Doctorate DBA and Ph.D. Program

We offer nine semesters, but within three-years to earn separately dual doctoral DBA, and Ph.D. program with specialization in six majors. You should enroll for efficiently dual doctoral studies if you want to pursue research or an academic career in the future. Alternatively, you may aim at future career in strategic management and consultancy at your higher position, where strong analytic skills are required. You will need to have an area of interest that you will devote yourself to. You will need a strong desire for gaining knowledge and learning new skills.

The Dual DBA and PhD Combined program merges both theoretical aspects of the PhD along with the practical orientation of the DBA program to produce a more holistic approach to management scholarship.

As such the program is the flagship program at the Swiss Graduate School of Business (The Swiss SGSB Business School). The program requires in-depth research on the scholarship within the chosen domain along with an exploration of actionable items addressing a real world managerial problem.

Self-Research Doctorate for Option #1 to #4

A research doctorate is what most of us think of when we hear the term “doctoral degree.” These are classic Doctorate programs which focus heavily on generating original research for publication in a peer-reviewed journal and prepare students for a future of research or instruction as a tenure-track university professor . Most people who pursue a research doctorate progress straight from their master’s degree into a Doctorate program. Research doctorate programs require students to create and defend a dissertation as part of their studies and tend to take about 1-2 years longer to earn than an equivalent professional doctorate, although this varies greatly by subject and program. Examples of this type of doctorate include:

Doctorates fall broadly into two types: Research Doctorates and Professional Doctorates. Both are terminal degrees, and both allow the earner to use the term “doctor” in reference to themselves. The difference between the two lies in the process required to earn them and their career applications.

Professional Dual Doctorate for Option #5 and #6

These career-oriented terminal degrees only for work experience minimum of 10 years, over than 35 years old. Professional doctorate focuses less on research and more on the application of existing knowledge within one’s field of expertise.

Most people who enter a professional doctorate program have practical experience in their field and opt to earn a professional doctorate in order to move into a top-tier leadership role. In a professional doctorate program, you’ll be training to solve real-world problems and become a high-level agent of change. As such, you won’t be expected to generate original research (i.e. a dissertation), but to find new applications for existing knowledge, often referred to as applied research .

Program Structure

Program Description

The program is designed for only managers with a minimum experience of 5 years (in exceptional cases of 3 years) for learning program option #1 to #4, and minimum experience of 10 years of executives for learning program option #5 to #6, of which at least a partial experience has been in a managerial position, and professionals who need to use the principles of applied management research to solve practical problems. The program is carried out in English and is completed by obtaining the title “DBA” and “Ph.D.” two separated degree diploma with two separated specialized majors from the Swiss Graduate School of Business. Prerequisite for entry into the program is also a Master’s degree or an MBA degree.

The main characteristic of the Dual DBA and Ph.D. Program is the joint and acquisition of deep knowledge and the use of the principles in scientific work, especially scientific research methodology, to solve a complex problem of a company or economic practice.

Teaching takes place in class for attending students, online or in a hybrid form, through modules of direct teaching. Another learning modules consists of individual consultations with the supervisor or other designated mentors and Self-study with an independent creative work. The Dual doctorate program is concluded by fulfilling all study obligations and upon a successful defense of a written Doctorate dissertation in front of a committee.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

• The module will be delivered in a workshop format over an intensive three-day teaching

block. Workshops will comprise a balanced mix of lecture- and seminar-type delivery combined with small group discussions and other activities as appropriate to the nature of the material.

• Learning will also occur through tutor-supported, as well as self-support learning groups. There will also be on-line teaching support through a module blog. Finally, guided reading will address key topics. This range of methods will ensure that students will acquire the advanced skills and knowledge to enable them to develop a thorough understanding of this specialist field of study.
• The summative assessment will comprise a 30-minute oral examination and accompanying written assignment, to prepare students for subsequent stages of the programme – ultimately the doctoral thesis/viva.

DBA – Doctor of Business Administration

The DBA degree is designed to provide business leaders, executives and professionals an opportunity to pursue the next step beyond their MBA or equivalent qualification.

It is equivalent in stature to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree, but distinct in that candidates pursue applied research rather than theoretical knowledge. The goal of the DBA is to design organisational interventions which help address real- world challenges, and then to evaluate, assess and test the effectiveness of those interventions, and to communicate the findings so that both the world of practice and the world of research can benefit. In this way, the DBA candidates generate new knowledge – the ultimate criterion for the award of a Doctoral degree.

Our DBA is designed to produce scholar-practitioners who can enhance their organisation’s performance through evidence-based practice. It is distinctive in that the goal is the design and creation of an intervention, and rigorous evaluation of the effectiveness of that intervention. The programme therefore addresses three core areas: developing a clear understanding of the nature of the problem(s) or challenges to be addressed; understanding the relevant bodies of knowledge across management, innovation and strategy that may inform an intervention; and designing a research and data strategy to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention.

2. DOCTOR OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

A. CourseStructure

Intensively 2 years, Maximum can be completed within 5 years.

Your research training will include nine 3 day workshops and two 1.5 day workshops at The Shard, delivered by leading WBS faculty. Workshops integrate content, theory, design and research methods, through a review of relevant literature.

Year 1:  five 3~5 days workshops and supervision

Year 2:  four 3~5 days workshops and two 1.5~3.5 days workshops and supervision

Workshops are themed on: strategic management; leading for change and organisational development; systematic literature review; qualitative research methods; quantitative research methods; academic writing; entrepreneurship; innovation and technology; digital transformation.

Your training will give you access to cutting-edge academic knowledge and design science tools to develop solutions to challenges you face in your organisation and industry.

The DBA focuses on critical analysis of three broad arenas of scholarship: strategy, organization, and people, as well as the areas in which these fields overlap.

There are a number of non-assessed milestones across your study period. These help to develop softer skills and application of theory to your writing. At each of these milestones, you will receive tailored feedback from a panel of senior academics to help finesse your project and ensure your research is on-track.

In addition, there are formal milestones in the form of programme review panels where you share and discuss your work with an expert panel, who provide you with important feedback and direction. In order to progress, you are required to pass these milestones.

You will ultimately produce a portfolio of work that presents evidence for a thorough situation analysis, systematic literature review, synthesis of extant knowledge, problem description, solution design, and implementation evaluation. Your portfolio may also include publication in scholarly and/or practice oriented outlets. The requirement for the award of the degree will be to demonstrate innovation in the application of knowledge and in doing so, its extension to the analysis of novel problems in business and management contexts.

3. DOCTOR OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

A. Supervision

Supervision will be provided through a mix of face-to-face meetings at SGSB Business School in Switzerland, or email and online interaction.

You will be assigned a supervisor with the relevant expertise. Typically, they will be a research active academic who will provide expert advice and guidance on content and research methods.

In addition, you will have access to a board of practitioners, individually known as WBS Professors of Practice (experienced executives who are also scholar practitioners) who can provide support and guidance on process and development of the portfolio.

Our faculty is made up of world leading experts from every field of business and management. They all are qualified with their doctorate degree from world-wide. All of our faculty are research-active and the majority supervise doctoral research.

4. DOCTOR OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

A. Entry Requirements

You’ll need to show us you have not only the intellectual capabilities, but also the stamina, drive and commitment necessary to undertake independent study. You will have a conversation with our programme academics to discuss the requirements of the programme, and current issues within your organisation that you would like the programme to address during your research.

Academic and professional requirements

You will need both of the following:

An upper second class honours at Undergraduate level (or equivalent) plus a good MBA or other Masters degree

A minimum of 5 years senior management experience

Please note  these are minimum entry requirements and, as there are a limited number of places available on the programme, we will select the candidates with the best academic and professional credentials and whose research interests are aligned with the available expertise in SGSB Business School in Switzerland. Applicants who meet all of these criteria will be interviewed by the Academic Dean Prof.Dr.Johnny KIM before an offer of a place can be made.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language, you must meet a minimum overall standard in a recognised test of English, examples are shown below. You must show a good balance across all sections of the test and it must have been taken within two years starting the course. SGSB Business School in Switzerland will require your certificates as evidence.

It excludes residential accommodation, travel, costs in relation to research and data collection, thesis printing and binding, thesis resubmission fee (if required), graduation robes and photographs, graduation ceremony.

An Executive level of support is provided throughout your DBA journey, with enhanced cross-networking opportunities via social activities, extended feedback sessions and first-class supervision provided from experts across the school and wider SGSB Business School in Switzerland.

You can pay your tuition fee in a lump sum at the start of the academic year, or you can pay in instalments throughout the year (50%: 25%: 25%). Must discuss with an Academic Dean.

To secure your place on the course you must lodge a CHF.2,000 deposit with us within four weeks of receiving your offer. The deposit is part of the total fee, not an additional cost..
