The Case Study of Vanitas (ヴァニタスの 手記 ( カルテ ) , Vanitasu no Karute ) is the second main manga series by mangaka Jun Mochizuki following the completion of her one-shot Crimson-Shell and her first main series Pandora Hearts . The series launched on December 22nd 2015 and is being published monthly in Gangan Joker magazine. Yen Press publishes the official English localization, translated by Taylor Engel. In Japanese, it is marketed as part of the "shounen" demographic. In English, it is marketed as "older teen."

On March 28, 2021, Studio BONES announced an anime adaptation , which aired from the summer of 2021 to the spring of 2022.

Centuries prior to the French Revolution, the " World Formula " theory was proposed by Paracelsus which posited that the world was governed by mathematical formulas whose variables could be identified and altered. He aspired to change these variables in an attempt to erase suffering and bring happiness to humanity, which resulted in the event known as " Babel ." Innumerable calamities rocked the world to its core, causing massive amounts of death, and once it subsided new entities came into being in the world, primely the Vampire species . Deemed abominations before God, normal humans attempted to wipe out these new beings, and a race war ensued. This attempted genocide failed and Vampires began to hide their existences which came to be believed as no more than myth and legend, despite dwelling only one step beyond the human world.

Noé Archiviste , a young vampire living in late 19th century France, is sent by his Teacher to Paris to find the Book of Vanitas and discover its true nature. Supposedly, the Book of Vanitas is a cursed grimoire created by the Vampire of the Blue Moon from which the incurable disease Malnomen originates. Noé successfully discovers the Book on his way to Paris, as well as the person possessing it—a human calling himself Vanitas who uses the grimoire to cure Malnomen. Vanitas declares his goal to be the salvation of the entire race of Vampires, and Noé accompanies him for his entire journey, wishing to understand the true nature of not only the Book but also the enigmatic owner who wields it.

The story consists of Noé's memoirs on how he would come to eventually kill Vanitas with his own hands.

Terminology [ ]

Vampires [ ].

Though referred to as "vampires," the Vampire race within The Case Study of Vanitas are distinct from mythical vampires, and were in fact named after them for having certain similarities. The main distinguishing feature between Vampires and humans is the ability of Vampires to see and interact with the World Formula , allowing them certain superhuman abilities. Unlike mythical vampires, Vampires within The Case Study of Vanitas do not have to drink blood or harm others to survive, and the vast majority go their entire lives without harming humans. While most (but not all) Vampires do enjoy the taste of blood, it is not a biological need, and is compared to alcohol, smoking, or sex. Compulsive blood drinking only occurs in the case of blood addiction or Malnomen .

Most Vampires are born under the Crimson Moon, and have a natural fear of the Blue Moon. Those who are born under the Blue Moon, as in the case of Vanitas of the Blue Moon , are scorned and ostracized by other Vampirekind.

The Book of Vanitas [ ]

A cursed grimoire supposedly passed on to Vanitas by Vanitas of the Blue Moon themself. It is the originator of the disease Malnomen, created in revenge against Vampires for their prosecution of those born under the Blue Moon. The human Vanitas now has the Book of Vanitas within his possession and is the only person capable of using it. However, contrary to the Book's original purpose, Vanitas uses it to cure cases of Malnomen and desires to save the Vampire race.

Malnomen [ ]

A disease created by Vanitas of the Blue Moon . It attacks the True Name of vampires, causing their bodies and souls to warp. Those infected with Malnomen, usually called curse bearers, gradually grow insane and begin to obsessively search for blood, escalating until they assault and even kill others without hesitation. In addition, their bodies will corrupt, though the onset of physical symptoms appear to happen rapidly in the final stages of the disease. Once warping of the body occurs, the curse bearer will continue to attack others until it dies. Until very recently, there was no possible way to cure those infected with Malnomen, and thus all curse bearers would be sentenced to execution by decapitation once their condition was discovered. The human Vanitas reverse engineers the different forms of Malnomen to find and restore the curse bearer's True Name, curing them.

The Case Study of Vanitas is written and illustrated by Jun Mochizuki and began serialization in Square Enix's monthly shōnen magazine Monthly Gangan Joker on December 2015. There are currently nine tankōbon volumes collecting serial chapters released in Japanese. The series is licensed in English by Yen Press and published simultaneously with its Japanese release.

The Case Study of Vanitas is an anime television series adaptation of the manga written and illustrated by Jun Mochizuki. On March 28, 2021, Aniplex announced at AnimeJapan an anime adaptation for the manga, animated by the studio BONES. It started broadcasting on July 2, 2021.

Stage Play [ ]

Stage "Vanitas no Carte" is a stage play adaptation of the manga written and illustrated by Jun Mochizuki. Announced by the official Twitter account on October 28, 2021. The show was initially scheduled from January 21st to January 30th, 2022 at the THEATRE1010 (シアター1010), in Tokyo, Japan. An encore was performed from March 10th to March 12th, 2023 at the Sunshine Theater (サンシャイン劇場), in Tokyo, Japan.

The Case Study of Vanitas Episode 8

How would you rate episode 8 of the case study of vanitas community score: 4.5.

There is nothing scarier than a fanatic. We get two distinct examples of that this week: first when Vanitas knowingly questions whether or not the vampire queen of France is still alive, and later when he and Noé infiltrate the Paris Catacombs and run into one of the church's paladins, leaders of the chasseurs. The former encounter gets Vanitas and Noé kicked back into the human realm. The latter? That could prove far more costly.

Both cases are examples of Vanitas taking at least partially calculated risks, and in his defense, he had no intention of bringing Noé along with him to the catacombs; he did his level best to sneak out of their adorably named hotel (“Chou chou” is an endearment, similar to “sweetie”), it's just that Noé is naïve, not stupid. He also didn't realize that there was so much more to the catacombs than the tourist section he, Vanitas, and the dhampir trio toured earlier in the day, and even if they had mentioned it in his hearing, he might have been too busy being aghast at the fact that centuries of dead Parisians had become a major tourist attraction. (Graveyard tourism is still a thing, in fact; if you're feeling brave, look up the Catacombe dei Cappuccini in Palermo, Italy.) But these catacombs are housing much more than just the dead of Paris; they're also the headquarters of the church's Chasseurs (hunters), the vampire-killing arm of organized religion which believes that vampires are an abomination of God's work. That Roland buys into that wholeheartedly is evident from the first moment we see him, weeping in his devotion to his Lord, the light of fanaticism still shining brightly from his eyes when he walks in on Noé and Vanitas later in the episode.

So it looks as if The Case Study of Vanitas did indeed know that France had no one with the title of “queen” in the 1880s after all, which quite frankly makes much more sense, given the clear shot we get of the Musée Grévin, a real wax museum in Paris that would have just opened around the time the show is set. The signs in the catacombs are also, to my knowledge, faithful reproductions; mostly they explain how bones were moved to the catacombs when cemeteries were destroyed, typically to make way for more buildings, or sometimes because they were simply too packed with the dead and had become unsanitary. (Catherine Arnold's book Necropolis: London and its Dead provides a good overview of history's burial habits.) We also may get a reference to the non-canonical Sherlock Holmes film The Case of the Whitechapel Vampire in the name of a Chasseur the camera lingers on, Norris Watson – in that film, Watson emphatically believes in vampires, while Holmes does not. It's a great episode for references and history.

And speaking of history and royalty, it's no real surprise that Luca is the vampiric dauphin, but what's perhaps more alarming is the fact that Ruthven, and by extension Jeanne, are trying so hard to keep it a secret that the queen is dead, and long dead if that hand we saw is any indication. Luca comments that Ruthven, his uncle, is handling his ducal duties for him, which means that Ruthven is the de facto king of the vampires, since he, Luca, and Jeanne all know the queen to be taking her eternal rest. Right now it doesn't look as if Ruthven truly believes that Vanitas figured out what's going on, because he simply booted the good doctor and Noé – and later Murr with his bag of cat food, because he's not a total monster – out of vampire land. I think we can safely assume that had he genuinely thought that Vanitas knew, he would have just killed him then and there. But even if he is underestimating Vanitas, sooner or later he's very likely going to realize that he's much more dangerous than he currently appears, which in part could be what Vanitas was banking on when he began pursuing Jeanne. He is definitely playing a long game of some sort; the question is how much he's leaving out when he talks about his goals.

That certainly calls Vanitas' relationship with Noé into even more question. He does seem to need him, and presumably need him alive, because he deliberately tried to sneak out and leave him behind this week. He also warns him about Roland's flash grenade, although not in so many words, which supports the idea that he doesn't want Noé to fall into the Chasseurs' clutches. But is all of this because he likes Noé as a person? Or is he saving him for use on some future occasion? He didn't sound Ruthven out about the queen for no reason, and if I were Noé, Luca, or Jeanne, I'd start to worry sooner rather than later.

Case study definition

Case study, a term which some of you may know from the "Case Study of Vanitas" anime and manga, is a thorough examination of a particular subject, such as a person, group, location, occasion, establishment, phenomena, etc. They are most frequently utilized in research of business, medicine, education and social behaviour. There are a different types of case studies that researchers might use:

• Collective case studies

• Descriptive case studies

• Explanatory case studies

• Exploratory case studies

• Instrumental case studies

• Intrinsic case studies

Case studies are usually much more sophisticated and professional than regular essays and courseworks, as they require a lot of verified data, are research-oriented and not necessarily designed to be read by the general public.

How to write a case study?

It very much depends on the topic of your case study, as a medical case study and a coffee business case study have completely different sources, outlines, target demographics, etc. But just for this example, let's outline a coffee roaster case study. Firstly, it's likely going to be a problem-solving case study, like most in the business and economics field are. Here are some tips for these types of case studies:

• Your case scenario should be precisely defined in terms of your unique assessment criteria.

• Determine the primary issues by analyzing the scenario. Think about how they connect to the main ideas and theories in your piece.

• Find and investigate any theories or methods that might be relevant to your case.

• Keep your audience in mind. Exactly who are your stakeholder(s)? If writing a case study on coffee roasters, it's probably gonna be suppliers, landlords, investors, customers, etc.

Commencement - May 17, 2024

Students of the School of Graduate Studies who received degrees in August 2023 and January 2024 and those who will graduate in May 2024 are invited to attend our Diploma Ceremony in Veale Convocation, Recreation and Athletic Center as part of Commencement on Friday, May 17 at 2:00pm! Registration for graduates is required so don't forget; registration will close on Sunday, March 31 at 11:59pm EDT. Please note that applying to graduate and registering for Commencement are  two entirely separate processes . When you register, you will be able to enter a preferred name and phonetic spelling and record your pronunciation. We are not issuing guest tickets for our Diploma Ceremony and you many invite as many friends and family to attend as you wish.

To ensure you will receive your cap and gown in time for the ceremony, you are  strongly  encouraged to  order regalia  as soon as possible. Don't wait until the deadline!

All students are also invited to a University-wide Convocation on Wednesday, May 15. More details on Commencement 2024 will be posted in the coming weeks but you can review  additional information here .

Submit Graduation Materials by April 5

If you have applied to graduate for Spring 2024, you must submit your  final materials  by 5:00pm EDT on Friday, April 5. Submission of materials includes the completed format check and the uploading of your approved Thesis or Dissertation to  OhioLINK . Please plan to communicate with your advisors and committee to make sure all approvals are completed. All  forms  can be downloaded and electronically signed to be emailed to  [email protected]  or dropped off in our office in Tomlinson 203.

Last Day for Course Withdrawal: March 29

If you need to withdraw from a single course (as long as it is not your only class), you have until Friday, March 29 to do so. For most classes, this is to be done in  SIS . See the University Registrar's page on  class registration  ( start at #20 ) for instructions.

When you drop the individual course, you will receive a grade of  W  on your transcript and you will receive a 0% tuition refund. If you have more questions or are unsure whether you should drop the individual course, speak to your professor and/or advisor before making the decision to withdraw.

Resolve Fall 2023 Incompletes

If you received an Incomplete ( I ) grade in the fall semester, you have until the date specified by your instructor -  but no later than the 11th week of class (Friday, March 29)  - to submit all outstanding work in order to have a final grade posted. If the Incomplete is not resolved by this date, the I grade will be converted to an F.  See our Incomplete Policy in the Bulletin  for more details.

Currently Auditing a Course?

Students can audit a course to gain knowledge in a subject area without being bound to complete all of the required coursework. Email a completed  Add/Drop Form  to  [email protected]  to audit a course for Spring 2024 by Friday, March 29. A student may audit a course with the approval of the instructor and advisor, however, they receive no credit for the course (a grade of  AD  is posted on the transcript). Note that a course cannot be changed from Audit to Credit, and audited courses cannot be used to fulfill any degree requirements. Full tuition is charged for audited courses.

Eclipse Day: April 8

All classes for graduate students will be canceled on Monday, April 8 for the total solar eclipse. Check with your advisors and instructors if research activities will continue. Many campus facilities (libraries, rec centers, dining, shuttles) will continue to operate as normal. The School of Graduate Studies on-campus office will will be closed but staff can be reached via email and phone.

Enjoy the stellar spectacle ( safely  with appropriate eye protection) and associated events but plan accordingly for the influx of traffic and visitors to Cleveland.

Register for the seminars and workshops on CampusGroups ; no registration needed for conversation hours. Most sessions are in Tomlinson 239. Graduate students can book tutoring sessions through Tutortrac . Postdocs can contact Eric Moore , the Director of Spoken English Language Programs (SELP).

Submit Required Admission Documents

Do you have admission materials to submit to the School of Graduate Studies? If you have not yet turned in your official transcripts or test scores, please check your account for an email titled " CWRU official admission documents needed " sent on February 21. All students with unresolved conditions will have a Fall 2024 registration hold until the documents have been received and you will not be able to register for classes.

The  Office of Graduate Student Life  invites you to a week of events at the beginning of April to recognize the intellectual, teaching, and cultural contributions that graduate students make to our University community everyday!

Save the Date: Grad Student Award Ceremony!

Celebrate our outstanding students from across campus at the 20 th annual  Graduate Awards Ceremony  on Wednesday, May 1 at 3:00pm EDT in the Tinkham Veale University Center Ballroom!  The ceremony also honors this year's student-selected winners of the prestigious  John S. Diekhoff Awards for Faculty . If you can't attend in-person, the ceremony will also be livestreamed.

The third annual  Three Minute Thesis  (3MT) competition at CWRU was held on February 16. Over two dozen students competed by communicating the significance of their projects to a general audience in just three minutes with only one slide. Congratulations to this year's winners:
