In this section, you’ll need to talk about your skills and experience . What computer science-related courses have you taken? Do you have any industry experience? This is your chance to show the admissions committee that you have the skills and experience necessary to succeed in their program.

4. Conclusion

Your computer science personal statement should end with a brief conclusion . In this section, you’ll want to restate your motivation for wanting to study computer science and reiterate your commitment to the subject. This is your chance to leave a lasting impression on the admissions committee.

Who reads my computer science personal statement?

The computer science personal statement is read by the admissions committee of the computer science department to which you’re applying.

This committee is made up of professors and industry professionals who are experts in the field of computer science. They will use your personal statement to determine whether or not you’re a good fit for their program.

Usually, the admission review process includes several rounds, and your computer science personal statement will be read by multiple members of the admissions committee.

How long should my computer science personal statement be?

Your computer science personal statement should be between 500 and 1000 words . This is enough space for you to introduce yourself, talk about your motivation for wanting to study computer science, and discuss your skills and experience.

Speaking in pages, your computer science personal statement should be one to two pages long . If your personal statement is longer than that, the admissions committee is likely to skim it, or even worse, not read it at all.

• Relevant projects
• Accomplishments
• Future career aspirations

Your personal statement may also include other information that you feel is important for the admissions committee to know about you. However, make sure that whatever you include is relevant to computer science and will help you stand out as a strong candidate.

What should I not write in my computer science personal statement?

There are a few things you’ll want to avoid including in your computer science personal statement. First, avoid repeating information that is already available in your application . The admissions committee will already have access to your transcripts, test scores, and resume, so there’s no need to include this information in your personal statement.

Second, avoid including information that is not relevant to computer science . The admissions committee is looking for evidence that you’re passionate about computer science and have the skills and experience necessary to succeed in their program, so including information about your hobbies or extracurricular activities may not be the best way to go forward.

An exception to this is if you’re including information about extenuating circumstances that have impacted your academic performance, in which case you should briefly explain how these circumstances have affected you and why you’re still a strong candidate for their program.

Finally, avoid using cliches, quotes, or formulas in your computer science personal statement . The admissions committee is looking for an original and authentic voice, so be sure to write in your own words.

As you’re drafting your computer science personal statement, be sure to keep the following tips in mind:

• Write in clear, concise, and easy-to-understand language
• Use active voice
• Be honest and authentic
• Personalize your statement to the program you’re applying to
• Proofread your statement for grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors

In addition, I have experience in working with code from different languages, which has taught me how to think critically and solve problems. My skills in critical thinking and problem solving are essential for studying computer science, as they will allow me to tackle complex challenges head-on.

Apart from my skills and experience, I am also passionate about learning new things. This is why during my free time I volunteered for Code for America, where I worked with a team of designers and developers to build a civic engagement platform. This experience showed me the importance of collaboration when it comes to creating something amazing, and it solidified my belief that teamwork is key to success.

“Computers have always been a part of my life. As a toddler, I would watch my father work on computer programs for his business. Fascinated by the blinking cursor on the screen, I would ask him what he was doing and how it worked. My parents bought me my first computer when I was in grade school and I taught myself how to program in BASIC.

Since then, computer science has been my passion. I have pursued every opportunity to learn more about it, including taking computer science courses in high school and college and working as a research assistant for a computer science professor. I am excited to continue learning about computer science at the graduate level and to pursue a career in this field.

One of my biggest accomplishments in the field of computer science so far has been developing a computer program that can generate 3D models of human faces. What should I do after I have my first draft?

After you have completed the first draft of your computer science personal statement, you should follow these steps to edit, polish, and finalize your computer science personal statement:

1. Check the word count : Most programs will give you a word or a page limit for your computer science personal statement. Make sure you stay within that limit, as going over it can make you seem like you can’t follow instructions.

2. Proofread and edit it : This step is crucial. A well-written and error-free computer science personal statement will make you look more professional and competent. Use spell check and grammar check , and then have someone else proofread it for you.

3. Ask for feedback : Once you’ve proofread and edited your computer science personal statement, ask a few people for their feedback. Choose people whose opinions you trust and who will be honest with you.

Today, we are looking through a Computer Science applicant’s Personal Statement that helped secure a place at Oxford University. The Computer Science Course at Oxford is about understanding computer systems and networks at a deep level. Read on to see how this excellent Personal Statment gives attention to the mathematical side of Computer Science and showcases their achievements.

Example Computer Science Personal Statement

My first experiences with mathematics throughout school were always enjoyable but not inspiring. While I loved working with maths, and enjoyed representing our school in both the UKMT and Hans Woyda team competitions, I felt that maths could not be the end-in-itself the school syllabus presented it as. As I progressed through secondary education, however, I began to really see it as the powerful tool to understand and structure reality that it is.

The first time I saw that my interpretation of the use of maths had some substance was during a work experience placement I organised at IMSO (International Mobile Satellite Organization). There I encountered some examples of the mathematical and computing problems involved in working with satellites: from the difference between the Euclidean geometry on a map and the Elliptical geometry on a globe, to the logistics of moving satellites around to meet demand while keeping them in orbit. These were problems that demanded much more than mere number crunching, and being exposed to this gave me a taste of what maths beyond school might involve. A second work experience spell at Siemens provided me a much more in-depth view of the important role that communication systems play in keeping a company running efficiently and effectively.

My passion for mathematics and computing was further extended while reading ‘The Magical Maze’ by Ian Stewart. The description of maths as the exploration of a maze of our own creation had an incredibly profound effect on my understanding of what research in mathematics involves. What interested me especially was the visual part of resolving problems, so that they did not rely completely on resolving long calculations. This was close to how I like to understand and explain my ideas in mathematics.

Douglas Hofstadter’s ‘Gödel, Escher, Bach’ gave me a much deeper understanding of the axiomatic systems that make up maths and how parallels can be drawn between different subjects to gain a further understanding of them all. Connected by the theme of Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorem, the author passes through seemingly unrelated topics, such as the problem of consciousness and the mathematics of Zen principles, to explain the theorem. Although not the focus of the book, I have also enjoyed reading the links that are presented between maths and computing; it seems to me that maths is not just related to computing – computing is the physical manifestation of mathematics.

Maths and computing are about describing mental processes in a precise, logical way. The rigour required for mathematical proof leaves little room for subjectivity: something can be proven, disproven or unproven, but this depends completely on the validity of your logic. The idea of being able to extract order from apparent chaos, working through concepts until they click is what I love about these subjects, and what has attracted me to take those as an integral part of my further education.

However passionate I am about my academic studies, I also enjoy being involved in extracurricular activities. As head of mentoring and a prefect, I have improved my organizational abilities working with staff and mentors in developing study programmes for those students requiring extra help. Completing the Duke of Edinburgh bronze award – now working on the silver award – has allowed me to practice and develop my leadership and teamwork skills.

In my spare time I enjoy playing tennis, skiing and swimming; the latter I practice at competition level. I also love travelling, as having spent my childhood in Denmark, Egypt, United Kingdom and Spain has given me a hunger for mixing with different cultures. I like to unwind by playing the piano – I find that the pleasure one derives from making a piece your own is one that few activities can match.

I am thrilled about the prospect of further study in these subjects with some of the leading professors in the fields, and look forward to participating in university life.

This is a well-written, structured statement. The student explains their reasons to pursue a dual-honours degree and gives equal attention to both disciplines to which they are applying. The student adds personality to the statement by thoroughly explaining their own views on all of the examples of literature read around maths and computing.

Bad Points Of The Personal Statement

There are quite a lot of short paragraphs. The student could have saved space by consolidating some paragraphs into one, hence shortening the statement. The student starts three paragraphs with ‘My’ or ‘In my’. This is quite repetitive. There are too many paragraphs, seven in total. Paragraphs five and six could be shortened and grouped into one paragraph. In the third paragraph, it appears as though the student has either forgotten to add an addition space (in order to start a new paragraph) or has incorrectly started a new line for the sentence ‘Douglas Hofstadter’s…’.

UniAdmissions Overall Score:

This is a very good statement. The student has clearly achieved a lot and writes in a clear and easy-to-understand way. Attention is given to both maths and computer sciences, which is essential as the student is applying for a dual honours course. With some restructuring, this could be an excellent statement.

This Personal Statement for Computer Science is a great example of how to tackle applying to two different degrees or dual honours. The candidate’s interest and achievements are clearly shown which is vital to Admissions Tutors.

Computer Science Personal Statement

Nowadays, we mostly rely on technology and computers to strive and advance in fields such as artificial intelligence, script writing and programming to make our lives easier.

Due to our need for technology, there is a high demand for programmers. This in itself being one of the biggest reasons I wish to become a computer scientist. As well as coding in my free time, my studies have also supported my decision to start coding. A-Level mathematics topics such as Boolean logic and arithmetic have driven me to explore coding further. I am especially proud to have achieved a Best in Year certificate in the UK Senior Mathematical Challenge in 2016. I have also taken part in the 'CIPFA in the Midlands 6th Form Management Team Game' in June 2017, which has helped me prove my management, teamwork, debating and mathematical skills, me being assigned an accountant role in the team. Through my further education, I have acquired many essential transferable skills. In maths, I have learnt to synthesise information from different topics to solve a problem. In science I have demonstrated I can condense large areas of study into essential pieces of information and then expand using my own knowledge. This will set me in good stead for tackling extensive reading lists and information garnered from lectures at university. The practical assessments in physics and chemistry have demonstrated to me the value of teamwork and the importance of taking other people's views into consideration, which will come to my aid during seminars and tutorials during at university.

Outside of school, I have been learning Java using the website ' SoloLearn.com '. I know most of the basic commands in Java and I am comfortable with putting together small pieces of code. I have also conducted research into the usefulness of Ruby, SQL, Python 3 and HTML, and have come to the conclusion that I would like to study Python 3, due to its general popularity amongst programmers. As I am trilingual, I find language-learning comes naturally to me, and this will help me with the above. I believe that this course's career prospects are future proof. My goals regarding career are to become a website designer or a game developer which I think are at a great search as the technological era is in continuous expansion.

In my opinion, the world is in need for fresh young minds to expand this digital world furthermore; plenty of companies that operate online are very successful which makes the internet a great tool for people to develop businesses which has no boundaries for operators such as distance on the globe or having to go to a place to work. During the rest of the time, I like going to the gym, enjoy long walks in the park and listen to music. I am an EU student and I have chosen to come to study in the UK because of the good reputation and prestige that UK universities have to offer. I am accustomed to the UK school system and environment since, leaving Romania, I have successfully completed year 11 and 12.

In short, I am a technology enthusiast and am keenly interested in starting a computer science degree which will give me the required knowledge and qualifications in achieving my career goal to be a programmer. I am positive that with your contribution, I will fully succeed with my passion for programming languages in my choice of profession.

The course that I’m looking to pursue is BSc (Hons) Computer Science at University of East London (UEL). Through the teachings of this course, I will be able to gain invaluable in-depth and practical knowledge which will help me in starting a successful career. The opportunity to apply my theories and ideas in practice will benefit me to enhance my skills and knowledge and to achieve a deeper understanding of the field of Web Technologies, Computer Security and Database Systems.

According to my research I have found that the BSc (Hons) Computer develops future leaders who can bring data skills and insight to their profession. After reading through the modules and the learning outcome of the BSc (Hons) Computer Science course, I have realized that they are conceptually invigorating and very contemporary. By studying this course, I will be able to gain the knowledge, understanding and skills relevant for pursuing a rewarding career within a globally data driven environment. Moreover, the course helps students become self- sufficient, by helping students build self-direction and personal development. A self- sufficient student is always a valuable addition to a society and economy. As I want to explore my career in software development positions, completing this course will put me in a favourable position in terms of the software research and development market. As of the moment, I am interested in learning all the related skills and knowledge from this course. For this reason, this course will be the right choice for my career plans and objectives.

I had completed my SSC and HSC certifications from Bangladesh, and I had realized I need to gain latest knowledge in the field of computer science to excel in the industry. As a result, I decided to pursue my bachelor’s degree in the UK and applied for BSc (Hons) Computer Science. During my studies and job market research, I have realized that I need an international degree focused on practical knowledge to really help me excel in my future career. Upon thorough research of the modules of the BSc Computer Science at UEL, I have understood that this course is more in-line with what I want from my bachelor’s degree compared to other universities. I already possess a wide range of skills, including analytical, problem-solving, communication, etc. All this will be complementary to my prospective study since my existing science knowledge of SSC and HSC means I will be able to better understand the concepts of the course. If I can successfully complete this course, it will create a platform to pursue different career opportunities in Bangladesh and establish my career as a Software Development Officer in a leading tech company, such as TigerIT Bangladesh Ltd., Magnito Digital Limited, InfoSystem and Southtech Group.

In this course, I will be studying some of the most up-to-date topics in the Computer Science field. In year 1, I will be studying Information Systems Modelling & Design, Software Development, Maths for Computing, Computer Systems & Networks, Web Technologies, and Mental Wealth; Professional Life 1. In the 2nd year, I will be studying Database Systems, Data Structures & Algorithms, Web and Mobile App Development, Mental Wealth; Professional Life 2, Advanced Programming and Data Communications and Networks. Finally, in the 3rd year, I will be studying Computer and Network Security, Artificial Intelligence, Mental Wealth; Professional Life 3, Formal Methods and Advanced Topics in Computer Science. All the modules are highly demanding and suitable to today’s world. I believe that this course would be the right choice for professionals who are looking for a successful career in Computer and Software Development sector.

I am determined to study this course in the UK as the study environment in my country is quite different and we only can study with local students. Furthermore, due to periods of unexpected political unrest, students often struggle to finish their degrees on time.

Conversely, the UK has a great multicultural and diversified student community which is an opportunity for me to learn with lot of students from different nationalities. Computer science personal statement example 3.

My three major interests and passions are Computer Science, Maths and Music, and I believe that there is a creative fusion between all these disciplines. I engage wholeheartedly in these areas both in my school courses and out of school, and hope that I will be able to continue doing so on my chosen course and in the extra-curricular opportunities at university.

Computer Science has quite naturally come to be my chosen field. At the age of 7, I took to playing the piano, which planted the first seeds of my interest in defined logical patterns and structure.

My introduction to computing was via the logic of spreadsheets, but I then progressed to using BASIC for several applications outside lessons, including programming my own version of ‘Logo’ and an analogue clock. A major recent achievement of mine has been designing a database-driven website for my school’s Maths department, including multi-format homework question publication and report generation.

This is extensively used by the department, and other departments have approached me to provide them with similar websites. This project was nominated and then short-listed for the final ten of the New Statesman’s “New Media (Educational)” award.

I look forward to studying Artificial Intelligence, and have made my own minor foray into this area by designing and developing a computer-powered Connect 4 player using a complex ‘minimax’ procedure.

I also investigated ‘recurring function execution’ to simulate the ‘fill’ function of a paint package, an algorithm of which was used to develop a ‘random maze’ generator. Such mathematical-based logic led to an increased appetite especially for researching the use of computing with mathematics - I extensively investigated ‘perfect numbers’, determining the 8th perfect number (2305843008139952128).

I involve myself in the full life of the school and am pleased to have ways of passing on my enthusiasms to others. I have been appointed a Maths Prefect, which involves running a weekly Maths club, and also helping younger students in ‘work recovery’ sessions. I was also elected onto the School Council for 4 years in my previous school.

My passion for music has further developed in secondary school and led to eager participation in school musical productions for four years as the main pianist (which led to my employment as accompanist for a professional opera singer and singing teacher).

I have achieved grade 8 at piano, and have thoroughly enjoyed performing regularly at a variety of venues such as weddings, retirement homes, at charity events, for the visually impaired, and most of all, the opportunity to conduct an orchestra at Fairfield Hall performing my own composition.

I am looking forward to playing the 3rd Movement of Tchaikovsky’s 1st Piano Concerto with the school orchestra this December, exhibiting my love for classical music, especially given that my favourite works are those of Debussy and Tchaikovsky.

I was delighted recently when I was given the opportunity to combine my musical pursuits and computer interests by my employment for a commercial software company writing music. I have much appreciated being able to develop my above interests alongside enjoyment of hobbies such as Table-tennis, chess, and reading of a broad spectrum of books.

just looked into them. doesnt take a genius to use the general formula, and sub in 8:

2^n−1(2^n − 1)

also, if you number is right, then why doesnt it have 8 digits? each perfect number has the same number of digits as its position in the series, hence 8th = 8.

to be honest, i thought the personal statement as a personal statement could have been crafted a bit better, but bloody hell, your achievements, wow. no wonder you got all offers, dang. why does music and computing go so well? im a classical muso, and im applying for comp sci, and i know a couple people who either started off as musos and went to comp sci, or vice versa. anyway, the linkages between subjects and all that was helpful with mine so thanks.

This is the dummest comment I've ever read. You say it's no wonder that I was offered all my places based on the PS, then criticise it! What am I supposed to do, not mention my achievements? Or perhaps display a lack of enthusiasm for the subject. I see little point of putting anything on a PS other than about your interests and relevant achievements in those areas, or material relating to an enthusiasm for the subject (which I had done). Universities don't want to read waffle about your life philosophies or what-not; a more informed understanding of your personality can instead come across in interviews.

I am keen to read your own PS so can learn from someone who is obviously more proficient in PS-writing faculties.

Four Students Receive Honorable Mention in CRA Undergraduate Research Awards

Four University of Chicago Computer Science undergraduate students —  Jacob Serfaty, Jack (Zihan) Zhang, Yiming Su, and Cyrus (Zikai) Zhou — have received honorable mentions at the Computing Research Association (CRA) Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award . Sponsored by the Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs , this award recognizes undergraduate students in North American colleges and universities who show outstanding research potential in an area of computing research. The student must prepare a resume, a research summary, a personal statement, and their transcript, along with a letter of recommendation from the P.I. to be considered for nomination by the school. 

Advised by Shan Lu

Throughout his undergraduate career, Su has studied large software systems reliability and investigated issues such as concurrency issues in software. Thus far, he has already published a paper as first author, titled HotGPT: How to Make Software Documentation More Useful with a Large Language Model? Su proposes new qualitative and quantitative methods to scientifically evaluate the performance of a Large Language Model (LLM), and also provides some insights into how to responsibly and reliably incorporate LLM in production workflows. He does this through investigating a one-model-fit-all solution through LLMs such as the GPT series, covering three representative tasks: extracting locking rules from comments, synthesizing exception predicates from comments, and identifying performance-related configurations.

Su’s research has real-world applications as LLMs are increasingly embedded in many programs today. Su says, “I hope that our paper has shed some light on how to use these powerful models reliably.”

Jacob Serfaty

Advised by Pedro Lopes

When asked about his interests, Serfaty stated, “I’ve been interested in this field from when I was a child, as I was always fascinated by technologies that integrate people and computers such as Google Glass. I was drawn to VR development specifically from my experience with game design/development.” 

This led him to join the UChicago Game Design Club and the STAGE Lab’s quantum gaming initiative, both of which showed him how to merge his passion for programming simulations and designing for specific user experiences through VR development. He was offered a research position at the HCI Lab, where he used his acquired game design/development knowledge to make VR simulations to showcase haptic devices. Under Professor Lopes’ guidance, Serfaty worked on three projects: JumpMod Haptic Backpack, Stick&Slip, and Haptics Source-effector. All three integrate full-body haptics to create new types of sensations in VR/AR, such as friction, acceleration, and different forces. For example, the JumpMod Haptic Backpack, which is a backpack that can move weights at high speeds up and down to alter users’ perceptions of gravity. This creates the sensation of either jumping high, falling very quickly, and more. JumpMod was published at CHI ‘23 and both Stick&Slip and Haptics Source-effector will be presented at CHI ‘24 in Hawaii. 

Lopes, who advises Serfaty, expressed great pride when discussing Serfaty’s accomplishments. “This is the most prestigious publication venue in Human-Computer Interaction and it is fairly unusual for undergraduates to be authoring two papers at this high level,” he emphasized. 

Jack (Zihan) Zhang

Advised by Rana Hanocka

“I discovered this area purely by accident,” Zhang said. “While I was searching for study materials on differential forms in my third quarter analysis class during my first year, I stumbled on this set of videos that focus on discrete differential geometry with a focus on meshes, a popular surface representation of computer graphics.” 

He is currently advised by Assistant Professor Rana Hanocka and a part of the 3DL Lab , focusing on motion synthesis with generative models. His paper on this topic, titled GANimator: Neural Motion Synthesis from a Single Sequence , was presented at SIGGRAPH ‘22 and utilized multiscale neural networks to generate diverse  motions given a single input sequence. He also worked on a project that develops a new way of applying diffusion models to motion synthesis, of which the paper is under review. Currently, he is working on topology control for surface reconstruction with persistent homology.  

“Jack has excellent and already-demonstrated research potential,” Hanocka, who advises Zhang, emphasized. “He has already published in the most prestigious venue in computer graphics (SIGGRAPH), which is a highly coveted achievement often missed even by exceptional PhD students.”

Zhang believes that these tools could ideally be integrated into existing software or pipelines for artists working in the animation or graphics domain. After graduating from UChicago, he is looking forward to beginning his Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Washington. 

Cyrus (Zikai) Zhou

Advised by Yanjing Li

He developed this interest by first joining Professor Shan Lu and Associate Professor Blase Ur ’s lab, which eventually led to his work in Assistant Professor Yanjing Li ’s group in his third year. Zhou says, “I was amazed by how carefully designed abstractions, components, and tools in computer systems can lead to huge gains in efficiency, reliability, and programmability.” 

Zhou has worked on various projects. Alongside Assistant Professor Yanjing Li , he led two projects on improving the efficiency and robustness of machine learning through co-optimizing circuits, computer architecture, compiler-level software, and algorithms. He has also previously worked with Professor Shan Lu on projects that enhanced software reliability by understanding and fixing bugs in computer systems and with Associate Professor Blase Ur on user-centered security and privacy projects. Zhou expresses his gratitude for the professors, co-authors, and CS staff who supported him in his computer science research journey and for the lifelong connections that were formed outside of the laboratory. 

Zhou is excited about the potential of novel computing systems and tools to achieve better efficiency, reliability, and usability of computing infrastructure. Next year, he is looking forward to staying in the United States and beginning his Ph.D. in a related field.
