[do_widget id=custom_html-22]

Over the years, I have received a plethora of gifts from multiple people in my life. These include a wide range of alluring gifts that have touched my heart. There’s something for everyone, from modest stationery and decorative items to books and electronics. It’s a very typical occurrence, and I’m always grateful to get such considerate presents. However, one of the most cherished gifts was a mobile phone.

It was my 18th birthday, and I had recently graduated from high school with flying colors. Thus, I told my parents that I would have to get a new personal phone before joining college. I had arranged a birthday party for my friends and relatives. All my friends and relatives came to my birthday. They enjoyed the party and gave me many gifts. After the party, I opened all the gifts one after the other. I was astonished to see the present that my loving mother had given me and felt thrilled and emotional. I was surprised to see that my parents had gifted me the latest iPhone series. When I opened the gift, I couldn’t believe my eyes that they thought of giving me such an expensive gift.

It was a blue phone with a lot of modern and unusual features, including three cameras, more memory, more speakers, and a huge touchscreen, to name a few. The phone was made of sturdy materials and provided good value for money. According to me, it was a wonderful present. I was practically in tears when I received the present because I was so moved.

Giving and receiving gifts is a good way of strengthening our relationships. Whatever may be the achievement or milestone, a gift always means a lot to the recipient. It is an act of self-gratification. Here, I’d like to talk about a gift which I received on my graduation day. Graduation is a milestone in everyone’s life, and on that day, my father congratulated and gifted me a book named “DESIGNING YOUR LIFE: HOW TO BUILD A WELL-LIVED, JOYFUL LIFE”. From my childhood, my father urged me to read books, and now, during the start of my career, the book meant a lot to me. The book was a hard covered average size book. I began reading the book the day I received it. The book shows us how to build a life we aim at any age or stage. The book also gave an insight on how to generate a road map and plan our life goals. I found it to be one of the most enriching self books I’ve ever laid my hands on, and I was pretty impressed with my Dad’s choice. I was indeed the happiest person on the Earth, knowing that my father cared a lot about my success.

How to Describe a Meaningful Gift You’ve Received in IELTS Speaking: Expert Tips and Sample Answers

IELTS Speaking Test

Part 1: Introduction and Interview

In Part 1, the examiner may ask general questions about gifts. Here are some possible questions with sample answers:

Do you like receiving gifts?

Band 6-7 Answer: Yes, I do enjoy receiving gifts. It’s always nice to know that someone has thought of you and taken the time to choose something special.

Band 8-9 Answer: Absolutely! I find great joy in receiving gifts, not just for the material value, but for the thoughtfulness and sentiment behind them. It’s a heartwarming experience to know that someone has taken the time to consider my preferences and choose something meaningful.

What kind of gifts do you usually give to others?

Band 6-7 Answer: I usually try to give practical gifts that I know the person will use. Sometimes I give books or clothes if I know their tastes well.

Band 8-9 Answer: When selecting gifts, I put considerable thought into the recipient’s interests and needs. I often opt for personalized items that reflect their hobbies or aspirations. For instance, I might choose a rare edition of a book for a literature enthusiast or a handcrafted piece of art for someone who appreciates unique décor.

Part 2: Long Turn (Cue Card)

Here’s a sample cue card related to describing an important gift:

Describe A Gift You Have Received That Was Important To You You should say:

  • What the gift was
  • Who gave it to you
  • When you received it
  • Why it was important to you

Sample Answer (Band 6-7)

The gift I want to talk about is a watch that I received from my parents on my 18th birthday. It was a silver analog watch with a leather strap. My parents gave it to me as a symbol of me becoming an adult.

I remember being really excited when I opened the gift box. The watch was beautiful and exactly the style I liked. It was important to me because it was the first expensive gift I had ever received, and it made me feel grown-up.

Since then, I’ve worn the watch almost every day. It reminds me of my parents’ love and support. Whenever I look at it, I think about the responsibility that comes with being an adult and how my parents trust me to make good decisions.

Sample Answer (Band 8-9)

I’d like to describe a profoundly meaningful gift I received – a vintage typewriter given to me by my grandfather on my 21st birthday. This exquisite piece was a 1950s Remington model, beautifully preserved with its original carrying case.

The moment I unwrapped the gift, I was overwhelmed with emotion . The typewriter’s classic design and the rich history it carried were immediately apparent. My grandfather, knowing my passion for writing and my fascination with literary history , had spent months searching for this particular model.

This gift holds immense importance to me for several reasons. Firstly, it symbolizes the bond between my grandfather and me, bridging generations through our shared love of literature. Secondly, it serves as a tangible connection to the great writers of the past who used similar machines to create their masterpieces. Lastly, it constantly inspires me in my own writing journey, reminding me of the dedication and craft that goes into the written word.

Using this typewriter has transformed my writing process . The tactile experience of pressing the keys and hearing the satisfying click as each letter imprints on the paper brings a sense of authenticity and purpose to my work. It’s not just a gift, but a gateway to creativity and a constant source of inspiration .

Follow-up Questions

  • Do you think the value of a gift is in its price?

Band 6-7 Answer: No, I don’t think the price of a gift determines its value. Sometimes, inexpensive gifts can be very meaningful if they show that the giver really knows and cares about you.

Band 8-9 Answer: I firmly believe that the intrinsic value of a gift far outweighs its monetary worth. The true essence of gift-giving lies in the thought, effort, and sentiment invested by the giver. A handmade item or a gift that resonates with shared memories can be infinitely more precious than an expensive but impersonal present. It’s the emotional connection and thoughtfulness behind the gift that truly defines its value .

  • How do gift-giving customs differ across cultures?

Band 6-7 Answer: Gift-giving customs can be quite different in various cultures. For example, in some Asian countries, it’s common to give money in red envelopes for special occasions, while in Western countries, people often give wrapped presents.

Band 8-9 Answer: Gift-giving customs vary significantly across cultures, reflecting diverse values and social norms. In many East Asian cultures , the act of giving is often more important than the gift itself, with elaborate rituals of presentation and reciprocation . Conversely, in some Western societies , there’s a greater emphasis on the uniqueness and personal relevance of the gift.

Moreover, the timing and occasions for gift-giving differ. While birthdays and Christmas are major gift-giving events in Western cultures, other societies might prioritize different festivals or life events . The concept of ‘face’ in many Asian cultures also influences gift-giving, where the value and presentation of a gift can affect social standing.

Understanding these cultural nuances is crucial in our increasingly globalized world , as it helps foster cross-cultural understanding and respect .

Part 3: Two-way Discussion

How have gift-giving traditions changed over time.

Band 6-7 Answer: Gift-giving traditions have changed quite a bit over time. In the past, people often made gifts by hand, but now it’s more common to buy gifts from stores. Also, with online shopping, it’s easier to find and send gifts to people far away.

Band 8-9 Answer: Gift-giving traditions have undergone a significant transformation over the years, influenced by technological advancements and shifting societal values. In the past, gifts were often handcrafted items that represented personal effort and skill. Today, while handmade gifts are still appreciated, there’s a greater prevalence of store-bought items, reflecting our consumer-driven culture .

The digital revolution has also profoundly impacted gift-giving practices. E-commerce has made it possible to purchase and send gifts globally with ease , expanding our gift-giving circles. Moreover, the rise of digital gifts such as e-books, online subscriptions, and virtual experiences represents a paradigm shift in what we consider valuable.

There’s also been a growing awareness of the environmental impact of excessive consumption, leading to a trend towards more sustainable and experiential gifts . This shift reflects a broader societal move towards valuing experiences and sustainability over material possessions.

Do you think the increasing commercialization of holidays has affected the meaning of gift-giving?

Band 6-7 Answer: Yes, I think commercialization has affected gift-giving. Many people feel pressured to buy expensive gifts for holidays, which can take away from the real meaning of giving. Sometimes it seems like the focus is more on spending money than on showing care for others.

Band 8-9 Answer: The increasing commercialization of holidays has undoubtedly had a profound impact on the essence of gift-giving. On one hand, it has expanded the range of gift options available and made the process more convenient. However, this commercialization has also led to a certain dilution of the true spirit of gift-giving.

The incessant marketing and societal pressure to purchase lavish gifts have, in many cases, overshadowed the emotional aspect of the gesture. This shift has sometimes transformed the act of giving from a heartfelt expression of care and thoughtfulness into a obligatory exchange of material goods.

Moreover, the emphasis on monetary value rather than sentimental worth has altered perceptions of what constitutes a ‘good’ gift. This can lead to stress and financial strain , particularly during holiday seasons, potentially detracting from the joy of giving and receiving.

However, it’s important to note that this commercialization has also sparked a counter-movement . Many people are now consciously returning to more meaningful, personalized, and often handmade gifts, seeking to recapture the authentic spirit of gift-giving. This trend suggests a growing awareness of the need to balance commercial convenience with genuine sentiment in our gift-giving practices.

Key Vocabulary and Phrases for High Scores

  • Use a variety of descriptive adjectives to make your account vivid and engaging.
  • Incorporate idiomatic expressions and advanced vocabulary naturally in your responses.
  • Discuss not just the gift itself, but also the emotions and memories associated with it.
  • Practice speaking about different types of gifts to improve your fluency on this topic.
  • Be prepared to discuss broader themes related to gift-giving, such as cultural differences or the impact of commercialization.

Describe the best gift/present you have received.

Last Updated on August 29, 2024

The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a famous test, used to measure how good people are in English. It mainly focuses on examining the abilities of non-native speakers to understand and use the language correctly. This global examination checks four main parts: listening skills, reading comprehension, writing ability, and speaking proficiency. The exam is administered by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge Assessment English.

IELTS scoring is done on a scale from 1 to 9, where higher numbers demonstrate better English skills. This exam, known by universities around the world along with employers and immigration departments globally, is seen as one trustworthy method for evaluating an individual’s understanding of English. People who want to study or work in an English-speaking country often need this test.

For IELTS , there are two main types. The first is Academic, which people take if they want to study at a university or college in an English-speaking country. Or, those who need it for professional registration like doctors and nurses. The second type known as “General Training” is suitable for persons planning to work overseas or migrate to places where English speaking is common.

Table of Contents

IELTS Test Format

The IELTS test’s organization is typically split into four parts, with each part aimed at measuring a specific language skill: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The usual sequence is to do the Listening and Reading sections first before proceeding to the Writing task; most finish off by completing their Speaking component. These four sections are covered in one session that usually lasts around 2 hours and 45 minutes. The Listening part has four recordings of monologues and conversations that check your comprehension of the main ideas, detailed information, viewpoints, or intentions.

The Reading part is composed of three texts from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers to determine your understanding as well as skills in interpreting and analyzing literature. Academic IELTS includes a Writing task, which entails describing some graph, table, or diagram and then composing an essay. In General Training Writing there are tasks for letter writing as well as an essay. The Speaking part is similar to a personal interview where they examine how well you can speak. They assess how smoothly you speak English by looking at coherence, lexical resources, grammar range, and accuracy. They also consider pronunciation.

IELTS Speaking Part 2 – Cue Card Section

The IELTS Speaking Part 2, also called the Cue Card section, is a significant part of the IELTS Speaking test. In this section, participants are provided with a cue card that contains a topic along with some hints to talk about it. They have one minute for preparation time and after that, they should talk for 1-2 minutes on the subject given.

Usually, the cue card requires candidates to talk about an experience, object, person, or situation in detail. This section examines if the candidate can speak for a longer duration, and utilizes correct vocabulary and grammar while arranging thoughts logically and offering examples/reasons relatedly. Additionally, more questions on the topic will be asked by the examiner to evaluate the speaking skills of the candidate in important detail. For achieving high band scores in the IELTS Speaking test, it is quite beneficial to prepare yourself for this part. Some instances of good preparation are:

  • Practicing with provided cue cards. You can find cue card questions to practice on IELTS Cue Card
  • Making plans on how to arrange and give a well-structured response

On the cue card topic of Describing the best gift/ present you have received, I am going to tell you about a gift that remains dear to me.

The gift was a leather journal, skillfully made and covered in a rustic but refined style. The pages were of good quality paper that encouraged one to write on them, giving an enduring beauty that distinguished it from usual notebooks.

My best friend, Sirohi, gave me this special present. She knows how much I love writing and collecting memories, so she chose this unique journal for my birthday. Sirohi and I have a close connection so she wanted to give me something that matches my passion of putting thoughts on paper.

Sirohi and I would frequently talk about our similar passion for journaling. She identified that I liked to write with a pen on paper more than taking digital notes, so she thought this journal was perfect for me as it matched my preference. On the day of my birthday, she saw it as an excellent chance to give me something special which also symbolizes our close bond.

This leather-bound journal was like another part of me. Its touchable cover and the faint smell of leather turned each writing session into a full immersion. The sentimental value increased greatly because it was a gift from my closest friend who knew well and valued my love for writing. Every page became a board for my thoughts, and after some time, it turned into a memory-filled treasure with sketches and personal contemplations.

This gift was even more unique because it carried thoughtfulness. It wasn’t an ordinary present, but a purposefully selected thing that revealed my character and likes.

IELTS Follow-up questions for the cue card topic: Describe the best gift/present you have received

1. What was this gift that you received?

The most valuable present that I’ve gotten is a vintage ink pen. This item is genuinely an artwork, with a detailed pattern on the barrel and a smooth, timeless shape. Its nib is made from 18-karat gold which promises effortless writing enjoyment for years to come.

2. Why was this gift so special to you?

This gift has a lot of sentimental value for me. It was given by my grandfather on my 21st birthday and signifies the time when I became an adult. It also symbolizes a strong link to my family’s history because he collected many fine writing tools, and this pen held its spot in his collection for several years. In giving it to me, he was transferring a part of our family’s past and culture.

3. Describe the occasion or circumstances surrounding the receiving of this gift.

The time was my 21st birthday celebration, an important event in our tradition. It happened in a small group with only my family members who are very close to me – we shared stories, laughs, and special times together. Toward the end of the night, Grandfather took me aside and gave me a nicely wrapped present. With a sparkle in his eye and a gentle hug, he showed the fountain pen. He told me about its past and why it means so much to him. It was an emotional moment that I will always remember.

4. What is the significance or sentimental value of this gift for you?

This fountain pen isn’t only a thing I have but also the physical form of my grandfather’s affection, understanding, and heritage. When I take hold of this pen in my hand each time, it reminds me about all that he taught – to work hard no matter what, keep going even when things are not easy and appreciate life’s finer details. For me it is like having an ongoing symbol for always remembering his lessons; how important diligent commitment must be towards any task or goal just as he did throughout life which was truly remarkable.

5. How has this gift influenced or impacted your life since receiving it?

Receiving this gift from my grandfather’s pen has changed me deeply. It has strengthened my link to the roots of our family and motivated me to continue with the customs handed down over many generations. Every time I use this pen, either for making notes in a journal writing letters, or working on creative projects, it gives me a feeling of aim and inspiration. Now, it is like a friend who I value greatly, going along with me in this path of understanding myself better and growing personally. Additionally, it has cultivated my fondness for gathering sophisticated writing tools, letting me admire the skill and creativity involved in making these everlasting pieces.

essay on a gift you received

A gift you received Who gave the gift and why? Describe the gift How did it benefit you in your life?

I received a very precious gift from my cousin on my 26th birthday. It was a laptop. My cousin has always been very generous, but this time even I was surprised by his generosity. I could have never envisaged that he would give me such en expensive gift. At first I told refused to accept it as I believe it was an extravagant expenditure, but on his persistent persuasion I had to accept this expensive gift.

It is so difficult to describe the laptop in words, but I would just tell you something about. It was an i3 and it has a black color. I do not know the price of the laptop as it was a gift but it has been priceless for me. Whenever someone looks at the laptop the person asks me about the laptop and tells me how good it is. I am not person an IT professionals so I would not be able to explain this electronic device in the most proper way, but I still want to say that it is not stylish but also useful.

This gift has been very beneficial for me. It has helped me both educationally and socially. I use my laptop whenever I have to do an assignment or report. I also talk or communicate with my friends by using different websites and applications. I can say that my life would have been boring and slow if I had not had this beautiful gift. That is the reason I always tell my cousin how thankful I am to him for giving me such a useful thing which has actually helped me a lot.

Model Answer:

I have been lucky to receive many gifts in my life at different times from my family and friends. While I like all of those gifts in one way or another, today, I would like to talk about a gift which I consider a bit more unique and important than the others.

This important gift, I have decided to talk about today, is a digital or electronic dictionary which I received as a gift from one of my dear uncles on my 21st birthday. Now, prior to receiving the digital dictionary, I didn’t really know much about it except that it was a “different” kind of dictionary which could come really handy if I needed to learn new words and their different kinds of meanings.

Anyway, once I was offered that gift, wrapped up in a nice and distinct-looking box, I became really excited and immediately opened up the box to see my gift. There, I saw a nice mini-laptop like handheld device in a shiny navy blue colour, just begging me to play with it. It was about little over 6 inches long with a separate LCD screen and a separate writing panel with a full keyboard. The dictionary had nice rounded corners and very smooth edges to offer it a very nice and distinct look.

Apart from the most basic and important dictionary function to look for the meaning of words, nice little electronic equipment also text-to-speech recognition feature, programmes to help study difficult vocabularies, calculator and calendar. It also had game playing and other multi-media features. By the way, made by Casio Company of Japan, the digital dictionary also came with a nice looking leather bag in order to carry it safely and securely.

Anyway, this gift was important to me, mainly because it had significantly helped me improve my English language skill in a very relaxed mood. The dictionary was important to me also because it would help me pass my time by playing video games and listening to music.

Sample Answer

Over the years I have received many gifts on different occasions from many people. These consist of a variety of enticing presents that have touched my heart. Ranging from simple stationary and decoration trinkets to books and gadgets. It is a quite common phenomenon and I feel immensely happy to receive such thoughtful gifts.

As per my thought, the best present that I have ever got was a mobile phone. During my first year of college, I came to know about this smartphone that was just launched on the market. The phone had a lot of modern and rare features such as two cameras, increased memory, more speakers, and a large touchscreen amongst others. Made of tough materials the phone was durable and value for money. It was comparatively cheaper than the luxury smartphones available back then along with some class leading features.

On my birthday that year, my uncle visited me in college and spent some time with me. While leaving, he gave me a gift box and I instantly opened it. I was surprised to see the same phone lying in the box. I was delighted upon receiving this phone as a gift as my current phone was broken and I desperately needed a new one. It was the most thoughtful gift in my view as my uncle had put a lot of thought and effort into it. I was very happy and I hugged my uncle while thanking him profusely.

IELTS CUE CARD TOPIC

Describe when someone gave you something you really wanted /a gift you received

You should say:

Who gave it to you?

What was the thing?

When you received it?

Why you needed it?

How you felt about it?

NOTE  –  The examiner gives you one minute to plan your answer ,  and to help you prepare for the topic, the examiner provides you with a pencil and a notepad. You’ll have to answer the questions given on the topic for one-to-two minutes .

Sample Answer   1

Introduction

Although I have received many gifts in my life, I got a present I wanted on one occasion. Hence it is worth mentioning.

My brother blessed me with a gift, and he gave me the thing which I was severely in need of

It was a laptop.

I received it on my birthday.

I needed it because my country’s administration imposed a strict lockdown due to the corona pandemic, and my  college  started offering online classes instead of offline.

Since I did not have a laptop, I took a lot of work to attend classes online. Although I participated in the courses through my  smartphone , its screen size needed to be improved.

I found it challenging to read the content written by the teacher on the whiteboard. Moreover, submitting the projects was also problematic because typing the content on a mobile phone is time-consuming.

Hence, due to the non-availability of the laptop, my life was going through a challenging phase.

How did you feel about it?

After getting the laptop, I was on cloud nine. Attending the class became easy for me, and The teacher’s whiteboard was visible to me.

Apart from this, I completed my projects and submitted them on time because typing the content and offering the presentation is relatively easy on a laptop compared to a smartphone.

Hence, with the laptop at my disposal, my performance increased appreciably, and I passed my exams with flying colours.

Sample Answer  2

In life, we receive many gifts from our near and dear ones. Today I will talk about a special present which improved my life considerably.

My father gave it to me.

It was a scooter named Honda Activa.

On my 18th birthday, he surprised me by gifting me this scooter.

I needed it because for me going to college by public transport was a daunting task . Although it was close to my residence, there were many traffic lights, a due to that; the bus moved slowly.

Every day I used to waste two precious hours travelling to the college. The two-wheeler takes less space, and during traffic congestion, it is easy for us to move from one place to another.

Apart from this, most of my friends had two-wheelers, and I used to feel deprived.

Sample Answer 3

Although I have received many gifts, one is the most cherished and worth mentioning .

My sister gave it to me.

It was a microphone.

I received it on the occasion of Brother’s day.

I needed it because I started my Youtube channel two years back, and as I needed the mic with me for noise cancellation, the audio quality needed to be better. Due to this reason, I have yet to get success despite posting the best content.

The arrival of the mic brought a paradigm shift in my Youtube career. Firstly it enhanced th e  audio quality. A microphone produces better audio than a built-in microphone in our cameras or computers, which tantamounts to finer and more sophisticated audio.

Secondly, I operate from home, and the background noise is always a pressing problem . Due to this reason, I used to create videos at odd hours. After its arrival, I can make videos at any time because it has a feature that minimizes background noises.

Thirdly it helps to get rid of muffled or unclear audio, which has bridged the gap I had with my subscribers because it is not easy for them to understand what I am saying.

Lastly, it has helped me in brand building. There is no denying this conviction that high-quality audio can help us showcase our brand as a professional content creator, enhancing your channel’s goodwill and reputation.

Overall, the microphone is a gift that has considerably enhanced my videos’ audio quality, helping me produce a highly professional and sophisticated end product.

After getting the gift I badly needed, I was on cloud nine. It made my life better in many ways. Firstly it saved me time; before its arrival, I used to leave for the college at 9 am, but after getting it, I would go every day at 9 am. I used the saved time for personal grooming by joining a personality development institute.

Additionally, my confidence grew considerably. After all, I never missed occasions like birthday parties, special classes, seminars and presentations because my Active empowered me to go to many events despite traffic congestion.

It brought a paradigm shift in my life by allowing me to use my time productively.

Follow-up questions

  • Compare the gift which people have received 10 years ago to the present that people now are receiving? What’s the difference between them?
  • Do you think that the brand name is very important for sales?

Possible answer 1 for the above speaking cue cards

In my life, I have got numerous gifts and presents and among them, most exciting and best gift was the Laptop my father gave me when I was 14 years old. When I was 10 years old, I found that many of my friends had their own laptops and desktop computers. I was heavily fascinated about this wonder machine and dreamed about owning one someday. After getting admitted in grade 6, I got admitted to a computer training centre and learned the basic computing. Whenever I visited a friend of mine who had a computer, I felt overwhelmed to play games, learn new software, browse the internet etc. over there. I sometimes visited some of my friends’ houses more often than usual only because they had computers. Thus this machine became the only dream of my life. As I knew that my father won’t be able to buy a computer for me, I did not ask for one. I made a dummy computer using papers and boards and played with it. One day I bought a savings bank and started saving coins and notes there. After one month I found that I have saved very few amount to purchase a computer!

I got busy with other stuff and could hardly find times to visit friends’ houses to use their computer but in a corner of my heart, I felt the same fascination for owning a computer. On my 14th birthday, my father told me that he wants to take me to the computer shop and purchase one for me. I could not believe what I was hearing. That night it was tough for me to sleep. In the morning I wake up earlier than usual and went to the computer shop with my father. He bought a Dell Laptop that was Pentium 4 machine. While returning home, I found myself flying in joy. I opened the box after returning home and showed it to my mother and other relatives.

As a kid, that was a long expected gift that my father gave me and till now it’s the best gift/ present I have ever received.

Possible answer 2 for the above speaking cue cards

First of all, I would like to thank you for this nice topic. The best gift or present that I have ever received is a digital dictionary that my mother bought me on my 18th birthday. I was a college student at that time and my parents celebrated my birthday at home. Few friends and relatives were invited and it was a kind of family celebration. I was quite excited to open the gift boxes that my friends and family members gave me and there were some books, chocolate boxes and other gift items. Out of these gift items, an electronic dictionary was there in a small box with an ordinary wrapping paper around it. As soon as I opened it, I knew it was a gift from my mother.

I once told my mother about this electronic dictionary and how some of my classmates used it. I never told my mother that I wanted to buy one but I guess my mother knew very well how much I wanted to own this item. She had to save money, I guess, to purchase it for me and this is the best gift I have received ever. This was not merely a gift item or an electronic device, it was more than that- like a wonder box wrapped with care and love. My mother is a housewife and managing the money to buy me this gift must have been a result of her many small sacrifices. I thanked my mother for this fabulous gift and she was so happy to see me excited about the gift.

It was a while coloured small digital dictionary, not more than 4 by 6 inches in dimension, but was one of the latest models. It was quite handy for me and having this dictionary encouraged me to learn more words, their synonyms and their origins.

The gifts are always good gestures and tokens of appreciation and love, in our tradition. This gift was something special to me. I knew how much my mother has always loved me and her gift represented her love as well as sacrifices for me. In terms of utilisation, it was quite handy for me. I could easily carry it in my pocket and I used it quite often to learn new words and that has helped enhance my language skill. This is the only gift from my teenage that I still have. I will always remember my mother’s love that was blended with this gift and the unparalleled utilisation this device has brought was also important.

How to answer this cue card ?

Think about a gift that you received from one of your family members, relatives, friends, colleges or someone else. Write down the name and the person who gave it to you as well as when did you receive it and what was the occasion. Being able to point out those questions would help you to answer this cue card. The give can be from someone special and for this the gift can be a simple friendship card or a book. Does not matter if it is an expensive and exclusive gift or not, most important part is the importance of the gift.

The gift can be something other than the conventional gift items like a life-changing advice that you consider as a gift. If you are a father, you can say your kid is the best gift you have got is your kid and that was given by the almighty.

For gifts like cell phone, computer or a necessary equipment or device, mention that you have been wishing to own this but could not and after you received that, you felt overwhelmed. A gift from parents on your birthday can also be a good example of the best gift you received. For such gifts, mention that you received it in your childhood and had been touched by the whole idea.

For this cue card the gift item is not itself important, be it an ordinary piece of gift or a very luxurious item, so emphasise on your feeling rather than the gift itself.

Q. Do you think that present giving will play an important role in daily life? Why? Answer : It seems to me that this is a bit ambiguous. More precisely, present giving is something that occurs in special events, for example, at birthdays, festivals, anniversaries, wedding, graduation day, on name days, when someone visits others and so on. I don’t think that there are many people around the world who give presents to their loved ones or to friends on a daily basis. Furthermore, with regards to the future, I am of the opinion that giving gifts won’t have a special role in everyday life either because, as I said earlier, presents are given when something important happens. However, there is no doubt that present giving plays an important role in our relationship and that will always remain the same.

Q. Compare the gift which people have received 10 years ago to the present that people now are receiving? What’s the difference between them? Answer : To answer this question we have to go back to the past and think of the types of presents we gave and received. Despite my young age, I have some memories of such presents that my family and relatives gave me. I would say that in the past, specifically 10 years ago, the types of gifts exchanged were primarily clothes, toys, household appliances and books. Apart from the fact that they weren’t related to technology, they were also significantly important, educational and in most cases really expensive. Nowadays, presents are more of symbolic rather than substantial or useful. People these days often give and receive technology related gifts which were quite rare in the past. To illustrate, the important presents that I received on my last birthday were perfumes and a laptop. Of course, gifts items in all decades do not remain the same. It will change for sure after ten years. The love and good wishes behind a gift are more important that the item itself.

Q. Do you think that the brand name is very important for sales? Answer : My belief is that brand name really matters and it affects the sales volume of a product. Most companies spend a huge amount of money on branding in order to make the product or service famous and well-known. We could say that branding is an enterprise itself because it constitutes an amazingly important part of the company and its viability. As branding is a core aspect of a company, brand managers try to acquire customers and maintain relationships with them. Moreover, through advertising, media exposure and celebrity endorsement sales are on the rise most of the time for popular brands.

Personally, I would spend more money to purchase a branded product. Hence I am quite positive that brand name is important for sales.

Essay on Gift

Students are often asked to write an essay on Gift in their schools and colleges. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on Gift

Understanding gifts.

Gifts are a way to show love, appreciation, and gratitude. They can be anything from toys, books, clothes, or even time spent together.

The Importance of Gifts

Gifts are not just about the material things. They symbolize the giver’s affection and thoughtfulness. They help in strengthening relationships and creating happiness.

The Joy of Giving

The act of giving gifts brings joy not only to the receiver but also to the giver. It’s a way of expressing love and care, making both parties feel valued and special.

250 Words Essay on Gift

The essence of gifting.

Gifts are more than just material objects. They are embodiments of sentiments, gestures that communicate love, respect, and appreciation. They serve as a bridge, connecting individuals and strengthening bonds. In a broader sense, gifts can be seen as a social glue, a tool that facilitates interaction and fosters relationships.

Gifts: A Psychological Perspective

The symbolism of gifts.

Gifts carry symbolic meanings, often reflecting the giver’s perceptions about the receiver. A thoughtfully chosen gift can speak volumes about the depth of a relationship, and the effort invested in choosing the right gift can be a testament to the level of care and consideration between individuals.

Gifts and Cultural Significance

Gifts also play a significant role in various cultural practices and traditions. They are used to mark milestones, celebrate achievements, and honor individuals. The type, value, and manner of giving gifts can vary greatly across different cultures, reflecting diverse societal norms and values.

In conclusion, gifts are more than just material objects exchanged between people. They are a complex interplay of emotions, symbolism, and cultural significance, playing a crucial role in human relationships and societal structures. The act of gifting, thus, is a profound expression of human connection and shared experiences.

500 Words Essay on Gift

Introduction.

Gifts, in their many forms, have been an integral part of human societies since time immemorial. They serve as tangible representations of human emotions, acting as a bridge between the physical and emotional realms. They are often used to express love, gratitude, friendship, and even apology. This essay explores the concept of gifts from various perspectives, including their social, psychological, and economic implications.

The Social Significance of Gifts

Gifts play a crucial role in the social fabric of societies. They are used as a medium to express emotions and sentiments that are sometimes hard to put into words. In many cultures, gifts are used to celebrate milestones, such as birthdays and weddings, to honor achievements, or to express condolences during times of loss. They help maintain social relationships and foster a sense of community. Gifts also serve as a mechanism for reciprocity, helping to establish and maintain social norms and expectations.

The Psychological Impact of Gifts

Economic implications of gift-giving.

Gift-giving also has significant economic implications. It stimulates economic activity by creating demand for goods and services. The gift industry, encompassing various sectors like retail, packaging, and logistics, contributes significantly to the global economy. However, it also brings to light the concept of ‘deadweight loss’, an economic phenomenon where the value of the gift to the recipient is less than its cost to the giver. This highlights the importance of thoughtful gift selection to maximize value for both the giver and the receiver.

Gifts in the Digital Age

The advent of the digital age has transformed the landscape of gift-giving. E-gifting, gift cards, and online wish-lists have added a new dimension to the tradition of gift exchange. These digital innovations offer convenience and personalization, allowing individuals to give and receive gifts that truly align with their preferences. Yet, they also raise questions about the impersonality of digital gifts and the potential loss of the emotional connection inherent in traditional gift-giving.

Model Answer 1

There was a particularly memorable day in my life, about two years ago, when I unexpectedly received money as a gift. It was during the festive season, a time typically filled with joy and surprises, but this occasion was special. The gift came from my aunt, someone I've always admired for her generosity and thoughtfulness. She had been aware of my passion for photography, a hobby I'd been nurturing since my teenage years. Knowing this, she decided to gift me a sum of money, not just as a token of love but as an encouragement to pursue my dreams.

The reason behind her generosity was more than just celebratory. She explained that she wanted to support my creative endeavors. Photography, for me, was not just a hobby; it was a window to the world, a way to capture moments and express my perspective. My aunt recognized this passion and wanted to contribute to my growth in this field.

I used the money in a way that would have a lasting impact on my journey as a photographer. After much deliberation, I invested in a professional-grade camera. This wasn't just any purchase; it was a step towards refining my skills and embracing photography not just as a hobby, but potentially as a career path. The camera opened new doors for me, allowing me to experiment with different styles and techniques. It was an upgrade from my old, basic model and enabled me to capture images with greater clarity and creativity.

This experience was more than just receiving a monetary gift; it was a lesson in kindness and the power of supporting someone's aspirations. It reinforced my belief in the importance of nurturing talents and dreams, a sentiment I hold dear to this day. Every time I click a photo, I am reminded of my aunt's generosity and the role it played in fueling my passion for photography.

Recently, I experienced a delightful surprise when I was gifted money on my 25th birthday. This unexpected gesture came from my grandfather, a man of few words but profound generosity. He had always encouraged me to explore the world, to seek knowledge and adventure beyond the confines of our hometown. His gift was not merely a birthday present, but a symbolic push towards realizing my long-held dream of traveling.

The reason for his gift was deeply rooted in our shared love for cultural exploration. From a young age, I was fascinated by stories of distant lands, diverse cultures, and the rich tapestry of global traditions. My grandfather, a retired history teacher, would often regale me with tales of historical cities and the mysteries they held. He knew that my aspiration was to embark on a journey of discovery, to experience firsthand the wonders he had spoken of.

I used this generous gift as a stepping stone towards an educational trip to Europe, a continent steeped in history and culture. This journey wasn't just a vacation; it was an immersive learning experience. I planned a route that included visits to historical landmarks, museums, and cultural sites, each offering a unique insight into Europe's heritage. The journey turned out to be more than a mere exploration; it was an enlightening expedition that broadened my understanding of the world.

This experience underscored the value of experiential learning and the impact of thoughtful gifts. It wasn't just about the monetary value but the belief my grandfather had in my dreams. Model Answer 3

One of the most memorable instances when I received money as a gift occurred during my graduation ceremony last spring. This significant financial gift was from my uncle, a self-made entrepreneur who has always been a role model for me. His reason for choosing such a generous gift was not just to celebrate my academic achievement but to inspire me towards my next big step in life – pursuing a master's degree in environmental science.

The purpose behind my uncle's generosity was rooted in his understanding of my commitment to environmental conservation. He had always supported my ambition to contribute to sustainable development and saw this gift as an investment in a cause he deeply believed in. It was his way of acknowledging my efforts and encouraging me to continue pursuing my passion for making a positive impact on the planet.

I utilized this money thoughtfully, channeling it towards my postgraduate education. It provided financial relief and allowed me to focus more on my studies and research without the burden of financial constraints. The funds helped cover tuition fees and essential resources, enabling me to engage in advanced research projects and participate in international environmental conferences. This experience wasn't just an academic journey; it became a pivotal chapter in my personal and professional growth.

Receiving this gift was a turning point in my life. It reinforced the importance of education and the power of support in achieving one's goals. It taught me that the most impactful gifts are those that help us move forward in our journey, pushing us closer to our dreams. This act of generosity from my uncle was not just financial support; it was a vote of confidence in my abilities and my vision for a more sustainable future.

This response to the topic "Describe a time when you received money as a gift" is a sterling example of a high-scoring IELTS Speaking answer, for several key reasons:

1.    Fluency and Coherence: The response is characterized by its smooth flow and coherence. The narrative logically unfolds, beginning with the context of receiving the gift and progressing to its meaningful impact. This is evident in how the story transitions from the uncle’s motivation to the candidate's thoughtful use of the money.

2.    Lexical Resource: The answer displays a rich and varied vocabulary, which is crucial for a high score. Phrases like "self-made entrepreneur," "sustainable development," and "pivotal chapter" not only enrich the narrative but also demonstrate an advanced level of language proficiency.

3.    Grammatical Range and Accuracy: The narrative skillfully employs a range of complex sentence structures with accuracy. For example, "It was his way of acknowledging my efforts and encouraging me to continue pursuing my passion" uses a complex sentence to convey nuanced ideas.

9IELTS

Describe a gift that you gave to someone recently.

You should say:

  • what the gift was
  • whom you gave it to
  • how you felt about it

and explain why you chose this gift for this person.

Sample Answer 1

Recently, my younger sister visited me from abroad, living with her husband. I hadn’t seen her in a long time, and she thought I wasn’t a good brother to her. So, to prove her wrong, I decided to buy her an expensive gift.

The expensive gift was a wristwatch from one of the most prestigious watchmaking companies in the world. Made in Switzerland, it was one of the most feminine, elegant, classy watches I have ever seen. It is a blued-steel watch (not just a blue color watch) with a unique bracelet and is waterproof.

Of course, it was a luxury watch all the way, but it was made with such master-class touch artwork that anybody would make the mistake of thinking of it as a fashion watch. Anyway, the case of this watch is round, and it has only an hour hand and a minute hand. Having a gorgeous and contrasting dial/face color, the watch would surely attract anybody’s admiration and attention with its metallic gold and bright bezel. Finally, it is a 24-jewel, natural ruby watch, and it has a beautiful golden color chain, perfectly harmonious with the color of the rest of the watch.

After buying this precious gift for my sister, I felt great because I have searched for such a beautiful gift for a long time. In fact, I have visited at least 2 dozen shops before deciding to buy this very attractive-looking gift for the only sister I have.

Anyway, I chose this precious gift mainly because I wanted to show my little sister how much I really cared for her as a brother. Besides, I feel that the gift would perfectly match her overall style and fashion, no matter what occasion she used it. Finally, I also wanted to make my little sister happy. After all, I don’t think there would be any greater happiness for a brother than to see an expression of joy and happiness on his little sister’s face.

Sample Answer 2

The gift I gave to my younger sister recently is the one I would like to talk about. I gave her a cell phone recently. The cell phone model is Sony Experia Z, and it has Android Operating System. This water-resistant cell phone manufactured by Sony Mobile is a hot one in the market. The cell phone cost me around 40 K, and I had to save the money for the last 6-7 months to present her the gift.

I knew she had wished to buy a smartphone for a year but could not do so. I thought to buy her one on her next birthday and started saving the money. I saved almost 7-8 k each month, and I bought the phone just 3-4 days after her birthday.

I felt great after I gave the gift to my sister. That was an unexplainable pleasure, amusement, and satisfaction that I felt after I saw her bewildering face after she opened the gift. She was so happy that I felt like that was a perfect gift. I am sure I would not have felt the same pleasure as I felt giving her the gift of doing something else. She had been longing to own a smartphone, and after receiving it from me she hugged me.

As I already told you, from her conversation, I knew that she wished to own a smartphone so that she would be able to use the internet and take quality photographs. From that day, I promised myself that I would buy her one. And I wished to buy her a really good one. I could have bought her a phone for 10k, but I wanted to give her the best one I could accommodate.

Sample Answer 3

I recently gave a gift to my friend Juliet, my oldest friend. I have known her since I was four years old, as our parents are friends and we went to the same school. Our friendship has grown even more vital now that we are adults.

Juliet is one of the kindest, most vital, and most lovely people you wish to meet. She is also brilliant and great fun to be with. She is a successful actress, mother of two gorgeous girls, and a tower of strength in her extended family.

I gave her a piece of amethyst crystal with a hole cut in it for a small candle, which will light up the crystal when the candle is burning. Amethyst is a beautiful deep purple color and symbolizes creativity and clear thinking.

I bought the gift for Juliet’s birthday, even though I gave it to her much later than her birthday, as she was away at the time. It was a big birthday – in other words, a significant one so I wanted to get her something special to mark the occasion.

I chose that gift because I wanted to give her something unique which would last forever, like our friendship, and which will be a beautiful addition to her possessions. It will look good in the daylight when there is no candle burning in it and will catch the sun when it shines through the window. Then at night, if she lights a candle in it, the amethyst crystal will glow a deep purple color and cast colorful shadows on the wall. I hope it will also remind her that I will always be there for her if she needs me.

Everyone loves to receive gifts on their birthdays and special occasions. Last month was my closest friend’s birthday, and I wanted to give him something handmade, so it made me contemplate until it finally hit me. I like to paint and doodle a lot in my respite and for my close ones like my family and friends. It was a set of two different bookmarks, a random doodle, a design, scented candles, a diffuser, a bouquet, and his favorite ‘paul and mike’ chocolate pack.

I gave the gifts to one of my closest friends, Kushagra. He is my childhood friend. He has been with me since we were five, and we have seen each other grow and evolve. We know each other’s preferences and personalities. He had always been a big fan of my artwork and demanded to draw a piece, but I’ve always said no just to tease him. So to astound him on his 21st birthday, I poured my heart into making my handmade gifts.

He is enamored of scented candles and likes that his room should be filled with redolence whenever he enters it. I tried to celebrate his birthday as perfectly as possible, and he loved it.

Up till now, I still remember my friend’s cheerful smile and heartfelt appreciation for me when I gave her a small gift on her 18th birthday 4 years ago. At that time, we had been good friends for nearly 8 years and went through many ups and downs in our life having each other. That year was a significant milestone for both of us, so I thought I would give her something different and unique on her birthday. My friend is a very down-to-earth person with a big heart and full of positive energy. She has many excellent personal qualities, which always make me envious. She is carefree but sensible, humble, and has genuine goodwill for everyone.

Her birthday was two days after our graduation ceremony – an event marking our maturity and becoming independent adults. I spent nearly a month thinking about what I should give her, and finally, a company advocating social responsibility with child-labor-free clothes caught my attention. After much thought, I ordered from that company a cotton graphic T-shirt with embroidered short sleeves for her. The garment was milky white, made of 100% cotton, and very comfy for everyday wear. The most impressive feature of the t-shirt was a printed slogan saying ‘’Heal the world’’ – a renowned single title by Michael Jackson. The item was the accessible size and loose fitting over the bust and through the waist, so my friend could make it an item for her daily wardrobe staple.

I reckon that when it comes to choosing a gift, the recipient’s preference and personality should be prioritized over other factors. My friend always showed her strong belief in equality and human rights with a passionate voice whenever we met. Also, she loves one-of-a-kind clothing items with exotic designs. Lucky for me, the t-shirt not only conveyed a meaningful message but was also pretty reasonably priced.

Four years have passed since the day I gave her that t-shirt, and she still kept it in her wardrobe.

Choosing a gift for someone is usually challenging because you want to ensure that the person who receives it will like it. For that reason, I always spend a lot of time picking gifts for my relatives and friends. Today, I will share with you the time I had to choose a gift for my little sister’s birthday.

It was her 5th birthday, and I wanted to give her something memorable and unique. I decided to go to a “Build-a-bear workshop” to buy her a stuffed bear. At this shop, you spend time picking materials to build your furry friend, from the cotton inside to the clothes outside. You also got to give this teddy bear a heart and a voice recorder so that it would say whatever you recorded before when you squeezed it. After building the stuffed toy, the store would give him or her a birth certificate with a name and birthday.

My little sister was so happy when she received the bear. Well, kids always love a furry friend anyway. However, what was extraordinary was that as she grew up, she understood how much love I had put into the bear when building it for her at the store, so she came to appreciate the gift even more.

Vocabulary:

–  pick : [verb] to choose something from a group of things.

Example: The man picked a blue tie from the collection in the shop.

–  memorable:  [adjective] something special, good or unusual and therefore easy to remember.

Example: I will never forget my memorable holiday in Japan.

–  workshop:  [noun] a place where you can do a practical activity to create something.

Example: As a student, I attended drama workshops because I had always loved acting.

–  stuffed bear:  [noun] a toy in the shape of a bear, filled with cloth and made of some soft material.

Example: When I was a child, I had a stuffed bear which I used to keep in my bedroom.

–  furry:  [adjective] covered with fur – a soft thick mass of hair that grows on the body of some animals.

Example: People love pandas because they are so furry, with thick black and white fur all over their bodies.

–  get to (+ infinitive):  [phrasal verb] to be allowed to do something.

Example: When we visited the football stadium, we got to meet some of the famous players.

–  teddy bear:  [noun] this is just another name for a stuffed toy bear.

–  squeeze:  [verb] to press something firmly, especially with your fingers.

Example: Every time you clean your teeth, you squeeze the tube of toothpaste.

–  appreciate:  [verb] to recognize the good qualities in something or somebody.

Example: At school, I appreciated the help that I received from my teachers.

Well, to be honest, I’m not someone who has excellent taste in choosing gifts for others, but when I do, I will put all my effort into it. And the gift that I gave my mom on her 50th birthday was the one that cost me time and money, but as long as she was happy, then everything was worth trying.

If my memory serves me right, 5 years ago, I had a chance to go to the US on a business trip, and coincidentally my mom’s birthday was just 1 week later. I decided to buy her something from this fancy country as a souvenir at that juncture. Luckily, I got a friend residing in Washington, and he escorted me to some malls for an impeccable gift for her.

At first, I got confused since a wide variety of flashy things may attract any woman looking at, and undoubtedly they would buy them off at all costs. However, I had to live on a tight budget, so purchasing a pricey one was not a wise choice, so my friend suggested I buy a watch. It was a brilliant idea, and we rushed to the store at once.

After browsing through all sorts of female watches, I became discombobulated; hence, consulting the shopkeeper was my last resort. I should have asked her earlier since she got me the right watch in just a few seconds. Then I asked her to wrap that for me, and I attached some notes.

Going back to Vietnam, I dashed home immediately and gave it to her. She was so surprised and failed to stop tears from falling from her eyes. I was also touched and said, “Happy Birthday, mom.”

That was a precious moment in my life and I am always willing to give her anything that would make her smile.

Giving and receiving gifts have been an essential part of human interaction since the existence of mankind. While selecting a present for someone can be a challenge, it is also enjoyable. When it comes to me, I love giving handmade or customized gifts that have a particular significance attached to them. Recently, I bought a personalized stationery set for my younger sister.

The occasion was my younger sister’s 18 th  birthday, and I was highly puzzled about what to gift her. As she was stepping into adulthood, I wanted the present to be meaningful and beneficial for her at the same time. I searched local markets and online shopping portals but couldn’t decide for myself. Then my mother suggested I buy something she could take when she leaves for her University.

I happened to come across stationery set at a local store that seemed quite expensive for the price. The store manager advised me to get the person’s name engraved on the gift to give it a more personalized touch. It was an excellent idea, but the only problem was I had to wait too long for the customized one.

I told my sister to be patient with the gift as it was special. At last, when the gift arrived, she couldn’t hold to her excitement and told me it was the one which will always hold a special place in her life. As my sister is a vast stationery hoarder, I thought it would be a perfect present for her. However, it took me longer than expected to find a suitable gift for her.

In conclusion, the best gift I ever gave someone was the stationary set I gave to my sister. She found it very useful and still cherishes the memory of it.

Sample Answer 9

My brother and I have been very close since childhood, and we have many common interests. One of our shared passion was of traveling. We loved exploring new places within India and had been to many states in India. We are from Uttarakhand, and we were born and raised there.

Through school and our parents’ encouragement, we cultivated an interest in traveling to different states and cities within India. We would often visit our distant relatives and were astounded at the hospitality and grace they received us. Although we had been to many places, we had never been to Goa. It’s a state on the western edge of the country and was once a colony of Portugal and was taken into the Indian fold in 1961. Because we did not have relatives or friends in that state, our parents never let us go there.

In 2017, I turned 21, and my younger brother turned 18. I decided to surprise him by taking him on a trip to Goa for his birthday. As an adult, I could drive, book a hotel, and hold a bank account on my own. Our sense of adventure grew with age, and when I told him about the trip, he was ecstatic. We flew to Goa for two weeks and explored the rich heritage of the state and the natural wonders it had. And certainly enjoyed the different cuisine which was on offer there.

During our trip, we stayed at a local resort with excellent room service, an outdoor pool, and tiny scooters. The scooters were convenient for local transportation. We spent a day walking the streets of Panaji and exploring the historical buildings and architecture of the city. Most of the monuments were churches, and we had a wonderful time learning about their history. Since Goa attracts many international tourists, we met many people, especially from Russia.

The trip strengthened the bond between both of us. And my brother was incredibly grateful that I had picked the tab for the trip. We both savored the trip, our experiences, and our interactions with people from different cultures and countries.

In conclusion, the best gift I have ever given to someone was a surprise trip to Goa for my younger brother on his birthday. We had a unique and memorable experience, and we cherish those memories.

Giving presents to family and friends is a way of showing affection. I often receive gifts on significant occasions and also give them, usually on birthdays and anniversaries. I have received some precious gifts, and I believe I have been given some good ones. I would like to talk about one gift I will soon give to my best friend, Kaira.

Kaira and I have been friends since childhood. We went to the same school and college and spent our entire childhood together gleefully. She had given me many presents for when we graduated and when I got my first job, to state a few occasions. I have also given her some, but a piano is the one thing I wanted to gift her as she was very fascinated with it.

When we went out a year ago to look at some art pieces and musical instruments, she instantly fell in love with a piano. I decided immediately to gift a piano to her on the occasion of her birthday. At the time, it was too expensive, but now, I have finally saved enough to gift it to her. She has always found things that I liked once and astonished me with them. I think it’s my turn now to give her a grand surprise.

One of those gifts makes a person feel flabbergasted and extremely happy. I have arranged to get it to her personally on her birthday this year. I cannot wait to present it to her finally; I am sure she will love it.
