Experience scheduling automation for yourself!

Create a Calendly account in seconds.

If you're a student, you need a system to organize classwork, exams, and life in general. And it's true, there is an app for everything. But there are lots of apps for planning and time management. Which ones make effective school planner apps?

When deciding on a planner app, you should obviously look for one with features most relevant to your life and your schedule. It should have a distinct purpose. And It shouldn't be thought of as a one-size-fits all productivity app . Here are the qualities to look for in a good student planner app:

Visually clean user experience vs. info-dense

Highly customizable vs. highly structured

Integrated with other apps vs. self-contained, with all the features you'll need in one place

Specialized for students vs. transferrable to post-school life

Here, you can check out just a few of the best school planners currently available. Each is highly rated, affordable, and, in several cases, geared specifically toward school and study. And they’re easy to find. Most are available in the Apple App Store or Google Play store for use on your iPhone, iPad, Android, or other smartphone.

7 great planner apps for high school and college students

Android, iOS, and desktop: Free with paid upgrades available

Todoist is a project planner and to-do list all in one. Used by companies like Amazon and Disney, and made for everyone from students to executives, Todoist is an app that can carry you through school and beyond.

Although you can pay to upgrade, the free version offers more than most students are likely to need. Todoist includes features that help you:

Enter important details or to-dos in a note-taking section before you forget them

Set up projects for each class and any other activities or hobbies you're involved in

Add "next action" items, so you can always look ahead to your next assignment

Cross items off your checklist without losing them for good

Other helpful features include due dates for individual tasks and reminders that pop up on your phone or email. You can customize every feature, so you won't get lots of notifications without asking for them.

Todoist also allows you to label tasks. You can label by priority, context (laptop work, library, etc.), or any other system you want to create. You can also indicate recurring tasks, like weekly quizzes, so you never miss an assignment.

2. Microsoft To Do

Android, iOS, and desktop: Free with Microsoft account

A reworking of the long-appreciated Wunderlist, Microsoft To Do has continued to evolve its features to make it stand out in the field of student planner apps.

Student planner apps - blog - Microsoft To Do screenshot

One feature that stands out in To Do is that things you didn't check off from previous days stay in the “Yesterday” box. That way you can specifically choose which items to transfer to "My day," and plan a better time for those that won't fit in today's schedule.

To Do allows you to sort tasks into basic lists that you set up, such as "Work," "Home," or "Lab." You can then add subtasks to the items on each list. For example, if your list includes, "Presentation for econ class," create subtasks for "Brainstorm subjects," "Find sources," or other project milestones.

To Do also includes some features that will please visually oriented people. Dark mode is helpful if you're reviewing your day just before sleep or when you first wake up in the morning. You can also change the background for each list, with lots of modern and inspiring designs.

3. Calendly

iOS, Android, and desktop: Free with additional features available on paid plans

Calendly simplifies scheduling with groups and individuals. As group projects have become the new normal, you’ll likely have to set up plenty of meetings with groups and individuals during the course of your time as a student. You can save a lot of time by scheduling and managing those meetings with Calendly.

Here's how it works:

Connect Calendly with your digital calendar, like Google Calendar , Outlook , and others.

Create a meeting request.

Set the parameters. For example, you can let recipients see your availability, so they can pick a day and time, or you can set a day and time and they can either accept it or request a different time.

Select recipients and send.

Calendly will gather responses from the people you want to meet with, and you'll have a meeting set up without the long texting thread that's usually required.

Other helpful features include the options of Round Robin or collective scheduling on the paid plans. If others share their availability, Calendly will show times that work for everyone, so you can pick. Or, you can use its Meeting Polls feature to let people vote on proposed times before setting your meeting . Also, you can set reminders both for yourself and for those who agreed to meet with you.

Calendly streamlines setting up meetings, so you can free up your time and attention for classes and other responsibilities.

"Week view" allows you to plan your time and get ready for upcoming classes. "Day view" shows you tasks and scheduled items for today. For each class, you can add assignments, their due dates, and specific tasks associated with them.

If you upgrade to the Full Version of iStudiez Pro, you can even get a regular update on your GPA. As you receive graded assignments back, enter the grade and point value. iStudiez will do the calculating for you with its GPA tracker. It keeps this info from semester to semester, so you can keep the big picture in mind.

5. myHomework

Android, iOS, and desktop: Free or $4.99 per year for Premium

The myHomework student planner is a clean and simple planner app for education. Many teachers have already adopted it for e-learning or online instruction, but it's great for individual use as well.

Student planner apps - blog - myHomework screenshot

It's formatted for several types of class scheduling, such as block, period, or time-based schedules. myHomework allows you to not only input assignments and add tasks required to complete them, it also allows for prioritizing and categorizing tasks, so you can focus on what's most needed at any given time. You can set reminders for upcoming due dates too, so you don’t miss deadlines by accident (or procrastination).

While you do need internet connectivity to sync with other devices, this homework app still has full functionality even when you're not connected to WiFi. The free version has plenty of great features, but the paid version of this homework planner lets you get rid of ads as well as share assignments, add file attachments to assignments, and switch out your theme.

6. Power Planner

Android, iOS, and desktop: Free with paid upgrade available

Power Planner is a well-established student planner app with many of the same features as myHomework and iStudiez, like entering your schedule, keeping track of your GPA, and viewing assignments and exams.

Student planner apps - blog - Power Planner screenshot

Though the app is full of useful features, one element that sets it apart from other similar apps is the responsiveness of the developer. Power Planner is updated regularly, offering continual improvements to its features.

The GPA calculator is more robust in this app compared to others, with its "What if?" feature, which calculates what scores you need on assignments to get an A in a class. It also includes notifications for due dates coming up. The paid version allows you to enter more grades and stores your GPA info from one semester to the next.

3 tips for getting the most from your student planner app

In addition to finding a great app for students, these tips can help you increase your productivity and keep your schedule running smoothly. No matter which app you choose, you’ll get more out of it if you use it alongside smart planning practices.

1. Treat yourself to a semester review

At the beginning of each semester, set aside a couple of hours to prepare yourself and get everything organized in your app and in your head. Make it fun: Take yourself out for coffee, turn on your favorite music, and turn off your texting and other notifications. This is time to get in the zone.

Give yourself time to look through your new app's features and figure out the best way to use them (or customize them) for you. It's helpful to read reviews, as people will talk about the most useful features. It's also an easy way to learn how to use the app.

Gather your syllabi, work schedules, and any other pertinent calendar info. First, enter all your calendar info for the semester. This helps you understand what your weekly schedule will be like. Then create projects or enter assignments (and due dates) for any big projects  your professors already have planned.

For example, the class may require a video assignment due at the end of the semester. Create a task called "plan out video project," and set the due date for around the time you want to begin the project. You don't want to get bogged down in planning the details of all those projects during your semester review. If you stay focused on the big picture, you may have time for more specific project planning at the end of your review session.

This is also a good time to set goals for yourself. Do you want to turn in more assignments on time or participate more in class? Do you want to learn a new instrument or join a team? Get inspired about doing more than just making it through the semester. With a powerful school planner app on your side, this could be your best semester yet — and there's more to that than just getting good grades.

2. Add a weekly review to your calendar

To keep your planner system functional, you have to keep giving it attention. Set up a time every week — about 30 minutes to an hour — for reviewing your projects and planning out your weekly schedule. Make this appointment as set-in-stone as your class times, so you aren’t tempted to put it off.

You can use this time to input any grades you've received if you've chosen an app with a GPA-tracking feature. Make sure that for every project, assignment or exam, you've entered specific tasks to prepare for them as well. You don't want to just remember that you have something due. You want to have a plan for turning in your best work!

This is also a great time to set up meetings you'll need for the week. Use an app like Calendly to send out requests for meetings, so you're not scrambling at the last minute to find a time when everyone can meet.

And don't forget to schedule some rest! One of the best ways to stay motivated and stick with your work is to know you have some quality fun time coming.

3. Plan daily check-ins

Every morning look over your daily schedule and your list of things to do. This usually doesn’t take more than five minutes, but it can do a lot to help you bring your best to the things that are important to you.

Improve your learning through great planning

Choosing the student planner app that’s right for you is a great way of keeping your mind focused and your grades high during the semester. A great app will help you stay on top of your classes and work, especially if you keep your app up-to-date with regular reviews.

A great calendar app can also help you to make the most of the other aspects of your life, for a less stressful, more rewarding student experience. The world needs what you have to give, and these apps can help you give your best.

You’d agree that organizing and planning goes a long way. I did the research and shortlisted the perfect homework planner apps for Android and iOS. Let’s check those out.

Homework Planner Apps for Students

1. student planner- homework agenda & notes.

The first app on the list is a simple homework and notes management app. It keeps track of homework, assignments, projects, and to-do lists. The layout is minimal, all the tasks are neatly organized with a colored bookmark for easy identification. You can mark a task complete and remove it from the pending list.

Courses can be added easily and color-coded as well. The calendar shows any upcoming deadlines so you can prioritize accordingly. The tasks have a progress bar that you can adjust as you make progress which enables you to get a quick summary without actually opening every task.

You can also break your assignments in small chunks as subtasks that would make finishing a task much easier and the progress bar will fill automatically. It also allows you to attach media files to your assignments or projects for easy access to the important information in one place.

homework planner apps- agenda

  • Progress bar
  • Deadline Reminders
  • Calendar View
  • No option to sync data to the cloud

Student Planner is a great app for all the students, it has all the necessary features like Deadline reminders, subtasks, progress bar, color-coded tasks, and courses. It can significantly increase your productivity when used regularly. You can get this app for free in the Play Store.

Install Student Planner- Homework Agenda ( Android )

2. Student Planner

Student Planner is another fast and simple homework management app which is wrapped by a beautiful and intuitive material designed UI. What Student Planner adds to the table is the inclusion of a schedule or time table which you can use to either store your class schedule or it might even be a study schedule for your exams.

You first start by adding your subject and the schedule then you can add an assignment or set a reminder. The due assignments are arranged as separate cards and can be swiped away once done with.

homework planner apps- Student Planner Android

  •  Simple and easy to get started with
  •  Fast and small in size
  •  Beautiful Minimal UI
  •  Option for Schedule
  • No sync/backup
  • Timetable implementation not perfect

I would recommend this app to anyone who is looking for a simple homework management app with timetable support and a minimal UI.

Install Student Planner ( Android )

Egenda is simple. Open the app, add all the classes or subjects to the app, and once that is set up, you have the option of adding a new Homework, Quiz, Project, or Test and choose the respective subject deadlines. The app also arranges the due work in cards that can be swiped away when done. But what I love the most about this app is that the fact it allows you to go subject-wise and view all your upcoming tests, projects, or pending assignments which is a huge convenience for planning your schedule ahead of time instead of the previous day.

Unfortunately, the app doesn’t have a timetable option, but in its latest update, it added a  Calendar View  where you can see your whole month at a glance with your assignments, tests, and projects.

homework planner apps- Egenda Android

  •  Subject-wise sorting
  •  Calendar View
  • No timetable support

Egenda provides some great tools for Homework and Test planning and I am sure anyone would find them extremely convenient and useful. But keeping its single con in mind, go for this app if you are not too keen on having a schedule or timetable.

Install  Egenda  ( Android  |  iOS )

4. ChalkBoard

The next app on our list is ChalkBoard, which I found out to be a pretty smart homework planner app. Chalkboard strikes a perfect balance between simplicity and features.

Although the setup process is a little longer than the previous three apps, as you have to feed meticulous details about the classes, teacher, and schedule. It is worth the effort.

On the home screen, you are shown upcoming classes, events tab, and upcoming tests. ChalkBoard fetches the dates for every subject from the Timetable for your future classes. Little features like these make the app stand out from the rest and give an overall great experience. You can also view classes and assignments subject wise.

homework planner apps- ChalkBoard Android

  • Proper Timetable
  • Ability to add teachers for subjects
  • View tomorrow’s classes as well as assignments/tests/quizzes
  • Smart features
  • Little longer to set up
  • No calendar view

If you are looking for a homework planner as well as a school planner, Chalkboard is the app as it strikes a great ground with almost all the features one might need while not being too bulky.

Install ChalkBoard ( Android )

5. School Planner

School Planner is a full-fledged planning application designed for students to manage their career as a student. Along with your homework and timetables, School Planner offers you to keep track of your grades and attendance, add contacts for teachers, add recorded lectures, and even multiple planners.

The app supports backing up of all your data via Google Drive, Calendar View along with a weekly report, attaching snapshots to your assignment reminders, student accounts from ClassViva, and a lot more. In spite of so many features, the app doesn’t feel slow at all and delivers a powerful performance with its beautiful design.

homework planner apps- School Planner Android

  • Full-fledged student companion
  • Feature-packed and free
  • Supports sync and backup
  • Widget Support
  • Tedious setup procedure
  • Big in size
  • Complex, not so smooth learning curve

While it is not for someone who is looking for a fast and easy way into homework management, School Planner is a great student companion app and serious students will surely get the most out of hit.

Install School Planner ( Android )

6. My Study Life

My Study Life comes with its own web app and syncs with the Android app, essentially making your data accessible from any device as long as it has a browser.

It implements a goal-centric circular tracker that shows your progress. The Calendar view combines your timetable, deadlines, and shows all your classes and assignments, projects in a single place.

homework planner apps- My Study Life Android

  • Refreshingly new UI
  • Access from anywhere through its web app
  • Sync and Backup
  • Lengthy setup process

If you study from your computer or laptop, My Study Life makes it easy to access your homework planner on your phone from your computer, while not compromising on features and being completely free. What more can you ask for?

Install My Study Life ( Android  |  iOS )

7. iStudiez Pro

Like School Planner, iStudiez Pro includes grading and subject wise organization of tasks. iStudiez Pro takes it further with the integration of Google Calendar that allows you to directly get all your holidays, exam schedule, routine from Google Calendar itself.

It also offers separate apps on all platforms including iOS, Mac, and Windows. All the apps sync seamlessly between themselves, so studying on your computer consulting your planner won’t be an issue.

  • Google Calendar Integration
  • Cross-Platform
  • Cumulative Price

If Google Calendar integration and cross-platform support is a must for you, iStudiez Pro is definitely the app you want.

The best organization apps for students

Everything you need to stay focused and productive.

There's a lot to keep track of while you’re a student. Lecture notes, exam dates, essays and group projects -- it's more than most human brains can handle on their own. If you're the type of person that struggles to stay organized or who wants to finesse an already-robust productivity system, read on. We've broken down the best organizational tools that can help you stay on top of academic life, including note-taking apps, calendars and to-do list software. If you have a personal favorite that hasn't made our shortlist, let us know in the comments.

Note-taking apps

Microsoft onenote .

If you're on a tight budget, Microsoft OneNote is an obvious choice. The service is available on every major platform, including the web and doesn't cost a dime to use. Well, almost: OneNote requires OneDrive to store and sync your work. Thankfully, every Microsoft account comes with a 5GB OneDrive plan, and many school email addresses unlock Office 365 Education, which comes with virtually unlimited OneDrive storage. If your institution supports the latter, there's a good chance your teachers and classmates are using OneNote too, making it easier to submit assignments and collaborate on group projects.

OneNote revolves around colorful Notebooks, which are then divided into Sections and individual Pages. The latter is a flexible canvas that can include any number of text boxes, pictures, tables, and PDF print-outs. OneNote also has decent, if not industry-leading handwriting support, which is useful if you own an iPad and Apple Pencil, a Surface device, or any Windows laptop or Chromebook that plays nice with a stylus. You can also record your lecture from inside the app and, if you have a Microsoft 365 subscription, access some advanced Windows 10 features including a built-in Researcher tool and Math Assistant.

Get OneNote

Notion is pioneering a new kind of note-taking app. Every page is composed of Blocks, which can take the form of text, headers, numbered lists, quotes, and oh-so-much more. In addition, text can link to pages that exist in a completely different part of your Notion hierarchy, helping your brain understand how complex topics relate to each other.

The app truly shines, however, when you start making to-do lists, calendars, tables and project management boards. These features, which you would normally need a separate app for, can exist as a full-screen page or a movable Block alongside other types of media.

Notion's flexibility can be daunting, especially when you first launch the app and discover nothing but white space. Thankfully, the company has built some handy page templates that replicate a simple notebook, reading list, travel planner and more. It's on you, however, to build a sensible page structure and decide what the app should be used for. Notion can easily work as a simple OneNote or Evernote replacement. But if you have the time and patience, it can also serve as a shareable Wiki for your after-school clubs, or a private hub for managing every aspect of your life including health, finances and summer vacations.

If you want to take all of your lecture notes with an iPad and Apple Pencil, you have two options: Notability and Goodnotes 5 . The internet is awash with blog posts and comparison videos that debate their near-identical feature sets. Both are fantastic, honestly, and have decent Mac applications if you want to review or edit your work on a larger screen at home. If we had to choose one, though, it would probably be Notability. The iPad app does a fantastic job of tracking and, through some clever software processing, tidying up your Pencil strokes to match your real-life handwriting style. The organization system, which lets you sort notes into dividers and color-coded subjects, is dead simple to grasp and navigate, too.

Get Notability

Honorable mentions

Beyond Goodnotes 5, we would also recommend Evernote , which many consider to the grandfather of note-taking apps. It's still a great option for creating and retrieving notes across a wealth of different devices. The company is working on a major redesign, too, that will supposedly deliver "a more consistent [and] coherent Evernote" later this year.

Bear is another fantastic alternative, though it's limited to Mac, iPhone and iPad at the moment. Quick and dirty notes, meanwhile, are best stored in a service like Google Keep . If you're rocking an iPhone or Apple Watch, however, you might want to consider Agile Tortoise’s Drafts instead. Launching the app will immediately open a new document, ensuring you never miss important information from a fleeting commercial, road sign or lecture slide.

To-do list apps

Todoist has a modern design and some of the best natural language processing in the industry. That means if you write something like "review chemistry flashcards every Sunday at 11AM," the app will know to add a weekly task with the title "review chemistry flashcards." Tasks can be added to a straightforward Inbox or custom lists, known as Projects. They can have any number of sub-tasks, too, and one of four eye-catching priority levels. The app has a number of views to help you prioritize your work, including Today and Upcoming, and a dizzying number of integrations with services like Slack, PomoDone and Google Calendar.

Some seemingly basic features are locked behind a paywall, however. You need Premium to access notification-based reminders, for instance, as well as organizational labels and filters. Want to add some comments and file attachments? Or have more than five people working on a single project? You'll need to pay for those features, too. At $36 per year, Todoist Premium isn't an impulse purchase. We think it's worth the money, though, and you can always experiment with the free version first to see if you like the UI and general workflow.

Get Todoist

Microsoft To Do

I know, I know, nothing will ever replace Wunderlist. Microsoft's replacement for the now-discontinued service, however, is slowly becoming a worthy successor. And, just like OneNote, it's completely free to use. Microsoft To Do doesn't have TickTick’s pomodoro timer, Todoist’s third-party app integrations, or natural language processing that understands what to do when you type "every Tuesday at 11AM." Still, it's a nice-looking app that covers most of the basics. You can add tasks to My Day -- a list of quick turnaround items -- a generic inbox or any number of custom lists. Tasks can also be starred and given specific due dates, which will sort them into the app’s Important and Planned (i.e. upcoming) sections respectively.

Items can be broken down into smaller Steps, which are useful if you're working on a large project that can't be completed in a single sitting. The app also supports reminders, repeat deadlines, and -- provided everyone you know has a Microsoft account -- collaborative lists. Oh, and unlike Todoist, you don't need a subscription to add explanatory notes and file attachments. (Both are useful for jogging your future self's memory with, say, a classroom location or book title.) Right now, though, there's no grid-like calendar view or built-in syncing with Apple and Google Calendar -- at least, not without a third-party service like Zapier.

Get Microsoft To Do

Just like Goodnotes 5 and Notability, there's a never-ending debate online about the merits of Todoist and TickTick . At first glance, it feels like the latter is a better option. TickTick has a built-in pomodoro timer, for instance, and lets you view lists as a kanban-style project management board. The premium version is also a tad cheaper -- $28 per year, rather than $36 -- and offers a couple of exclusive features, such as the ability to set start and end times. TickTick's free plan only supports nine lists, though -- Todoist offers up to 80 list-based projects straight away -- and the app's language processing isn't quite as smart, which means you'll occasionally need to dive in and manually set complex task schedules.

Get TickTick

Google Tasks is free, but it doesn't have an official desktop app at the moment. Any.do is another functional alternative that, like Todoist, has an app for every platform including Apple Watch and Wear OS. Unfortunately, the design is a tad dated and the natural language processing, while functional, doesn’t support recurring tasks. If you exclusively use Apple products, Cultured Code’s Things is also worth checking out. There's no subscription plan, but you have to buy each platform's app individually (at the time of writing, purchasing the Mac and iPhone apps will set you back $60.) If you have cash to burn, though, Omnifocus and relative newcomer Dynalist , which offers infinite sub-task nesting, are also excellent.

Calendar apps

Google calendar.

Google Calendar is the industry default — for good reason. It's free to use and, like most Google products, has robust web and mobile apps. The service is reliable, regularly updated and compatible with countless third-party clients such as Fantastical and BusyCal. A single account can have multiple color-coded calendars, which can help to visually separate your chores, class schedule and part-time work. User-created calendars are also shareable, which is great if you want to quickly distribute a practice schedule for your ultimate frisbee team. You can also add "guests" to any event, which will send them a handy invite via email. Is Google Calendar an imaginative choice? No, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't use it.

Get Google Calendar

My Study Life

Google Calendar is brilliant, but you might be wondering if there's something a little more tailor-made for the world of academia. One option is My Study Life , an all-in-one digital planner that's available on the web, iOS and Android. The sidebar has a Schedule option that lets you set the start and end date of the academic year, individual semesters, holidays, and every class that you need to attend. You can also use the platform to log your upcoming exams and school-related "tasks," which covers assignments, revision sessions and generic reminders through a drop-down.

All of this information then feeds into the calendar view. Subjects are color-coded, which makes it easy to assess and prioritize your workload week-to-week. Finally, there's a productivity-focused dashboard that summarizes your day and any upcoming exams and assignment due dates. Unfortunately, there's no way to sync My Study Life with an external calendar or to-do list app. That can be frustrating if you want to tick off tasks in Todoist or use another service like Google Calendar for managing your part-time work and social obligations. It's a relatively small nitpick, though, given the app’s nonexistent price tag.

Get My Study Life

iStudiez Pro

Please, don't be put off by the name. iStudiez Pro is a slick calendar alternative that, just like My Study Life, is geared toward students and their unique schedules. The Planner tab lets you add any number of color-coded classes, exams and assignments. You can also create teacher-specific contact cards that include their email address and telephone number. iStudiez Pro has a space for creating and managing assignments, too, and an overview that includes a daily schedule and traditional calendar interface. Unlike My Study Life, this app can also show events created with Apple or Google's calendar apps. If you want to sync any data, though -- or use more than one device -- you'll need to buy the full version of each app.

Get iStudiez Pro

Microsoft and Apple both offer applications similar to Google Calendar. They're perfectly usable, but we like Google's interpretation the best. If you own any Apple hardware, we also recommend Fantastical , which has a superb interface and natural language processing. It's free to use, though some of the more advanced calendar views and productivity integrations are locked behind a paywall. A solid iPhone alternative is Timepage by notebook-maker Moleskine, and Readdle's Calendars 5 , which doubles as a task manager and can also generate a Zoom, Google Meet or GoToMeeting call link whenever you send an event invite.

Apps to keep you focused

The internet is littered with services that will help you block distracting apps and websites. You don’t need to go with a paid or overly-complicated option like Freedom, though. Instead, opt for something free and simple like Just Focus . The Chrome extension, developed by a few friends in their spare time, has a single text field for adding URLs that you want to block. Then, when you really want to concentrate, hit the purple Start Focusing button and get to work. You can select the toolbar icon to see how much time has passed and, once you've completed the task, hit the Stop Focusing button to peruse YouTube and Reddit once more.

Get Just Focus

Even the most disciplined students have to pull all-nighters sometimes. If you’re preparing to burn the metaphorical midnight oil, install a little app called F.lux before you do so. The utility will subtly adjust the color of your display to match the time of day. Just check your location and preferred color profile (F.lux’s “recommended colors” are fine for most) and the app will do the rest. You should notice that your machine’s screen is slightly warmer at night, minimizing eye strain and possibly improving your sleep (that’s assuming you complete your assignment before the sun rises, of course). Every major platform has a built-in alternative these days (Windows 10 has a Night Light setting, for instance, and Mac OS offers Night Shift mode) but F.lux is the original and, in our opinion, still the best.

The Pomodoro Technique is like interval training for the mind. Developed by Francesco Cirillo, it's a simple tactic that forces you to work for long periods -- typically 25 minutes -- with only short breaks in between. You'll find countless Pomodoro timers in the App Store and Google Play, but we think the most imaginative is Forest . The software will plant a tree that, if you manage to complete the pomodoro session, joins your virtual woodland permanently. Leave the app at any time, though, and the sapling will wither and die. Over time, you'll collect coins that can unlock new species and ambient background music. It's like a bite-sized version of Animal Crossing that helps you get real work done.

Buy Forest starting at $2

If you think Forest is overkill, try PomoDoneApp instead. It's a simpler service that integrates with third-party apps such as Todoist, Slack and Evernote. If you're still not satisfied, we recommend giving Focus Keeper and Focus To-Do a shot. My personal favorite is Tide , a mindfulness app that also helps you sleep, nap and reflect with an assortment of natural "sound scenes," which include lapping waves and light rainfall. If you're working on a Mac, consider an app like HazeOver , too. The utility will automatically dim inactive windows, ensuring that your mind is laser-focused on a single application.

As a student, you're responsible for keeping track of test dates, quizzes, homework assignments, and final exams. On top of that, maybe you partake in after-school activities and sports. This makes it even harder for you to keep track of due dates and tests.

If you feel that you're sinking into a pile of assignments, you need to add some organization to your life. These are some of the best study planner apps for Android and iOS that can help you set times to study and remind you of upcoming exams, so you're not caught off-guard.

Chipper also allows you to add tests, homework due dates, papers, labs, and quizzes to your calendar to help you stay on top of your coursework. On top of that, you can set reminders that Chipper will send as notifications, so you never miss a deadline. And when you're ready to study, open the Study tab to set a timer for your session.

That means you don't need to download a Pomodoro timer app for such. But if you do, here are the best Pomodoro timer apps .

This app rewards you with earnings in the form of imaginary cash as you complete tasks. You don't actually receive any of these earnings in real life, but it's a good incentive to keep you moving forward.

9 great time management apps for students

9 great time management apps for students

Whether they’re juggling the responsibilities of schoolwork, soccer practice and drum lessons or simply keeping track of their virtual learning assignments without the benefit of a teacher’s watchful eye, kids have a lot on their plates.

A simple physical agenda with a calendar might work for some. But, if they already have a phone in hand at all times, an app with reminders and notifications may get more attention. And if the phone is part of their time management problem, as they spend hours on TikTok or playing Minecraft, a productivity app may be an answer to their woes or yours.

Here are some expert-recommended time management apps for students.

To-Do List Apps: TickTick, iStudiez Pro, ToDoist, Streaks

When is the math test? What’s the due date for that English paper? And is that club meeting on Tuesday or Thursday? These apps will keep a student on top of it all.

For virtual to-do lists, Ashley Morris , a former teacher and longtime math tutor who often recommends apps to her students, suggests TickTick, iStudiez Pro and Todoist. They all look similar, she said. She especially likes the ability to color-code subjects, so it’s easy for students to scan and find out what should take priority.

TickTick, available for iOS and Android, can include multiple reminders or “annoying alerts” when something is due; clarity on what to do next; white noises for focus; and the ability to share lists, which could be great for group projects. It’s free, or you can sign up for the premium plan for $27.99 a year.

iStudiez Pro

iStudiez Pro, available for IOS, also offers a color-coded calendar for each class and activity — and, for ambitious students, a GPA tracker, among other features. It’s free with some in-app purchases.

Todoist, available for iOS and Android, is top-rated in this category with pretty much everything a student would need, including a comprehensive list of all their tasks and the ability to keep important assignments, such as that history midterm, top of mind. It’s free, but there’s also a $3 monthly premium plan and $5 monthly business plan for teams.

Christine Elgersma, a former teacher and senior editor of social media and learning resources for Common Sense Media , likes Streaks, in particular, for tracking responsibilities.

The app, available for iOS, encourages users to build habits and follows their progress over time, Elgersma said, with the goal of creating a “streak” of productivity. With it, students can make sure they’re practicing drums five times a week, turning in their weekly English homework and walking the dog daily. It’s $4.99.

Productivity Apps: Flipd, RescueTime, Brili, Forest, and Galarm

It’s easy for kids to get sucked into the vortex that is Instagram or YouTube. These apps ensure kids stay focused on their tasks, said Morris. She recommends Flipd and RescueTime.

Flipd, for iOS and Android, is a productivity time tracker that discourages students from switching over to Instagram when they should be studying for that chemistry test. Through a series of social features, the app aims to help students reach goals and milestones by encouraging them to stay on task. It’s free with some in-app purchases.

RescueTime, for iOS and Android, shows students exactly how they spend their time on their phone, so they can find out if they need to devote less of it to messaging their friends and more of it on biology. It also can turn off social media, for example, during study periods and lets students set goals and get alerts when they spend a bit too much time on YouTube. A “lite” version is free, but it’s $78 a year with all the features. It’s also a useful Chrome extension for kids .

Elgersma suggests Brili, Forest and Galarm for keeping kids on track with their responsibilities.

Brili, for iOS and Android, is great for younger kids, ages 6 and up, Elgersma said. The app lets parents set up a series of tasks for kids — from teeth brushing and bedroom cleaning to getting their homework done — and reward them with stars when the work is completed. Kids see all their tasks in one place and are motivated through those star rewards to complete them. It’s free to try for the first month and is $49.99 for an annual subscription.

Forest, for iOS and Android, takes a unique approach to productivity — the more a student stays focused on their work, the more virtual and real trees get planted. “The idea is you’re trying to filter out distractions,” Elgersma said. “You can block distraction-laden apps on your phone. You set all the parameters. If you don’t touch any of that stuff, if you don’t allow yourself to get distracted, there is a little virtual tree that grows. If you break your own rules, then it won’t grow.” Eventually, users can watch their own virtual forest grow because of all their good work. The app also plants real trees, based on how well users do. It’s $1.99.

Galarm, for iOS and Android, is a social alarm that makes it easier for parents to remind their kids when something needs to get done. So, for example, when a child needs to get their math homework turned in, Galarm reminds the child that it’s time to turn in the assignment. Parents can get an alert that they should check in to ensure it got done. Over time, Elgersma said, parents can stay out of it. “The goal,” she said, “is always to get kids to self-regulate.” It’s free with in-app purchases.

Don't forget Google or Microsoft

Of course, the apps within a student’s Google or Microsoft Outlook account can help them manage their time with calendars and other features to collaborate and stay productive. Google Drive, for example, has an embedded scanner so assignments or notes can be stored in one place. And you can make to-do lists with Google Tasks. “If possible, stick within one system,” Morris recommends.

It’s also important to be mindful of an app’s cost, especially when kids are the users, Elgersma said. Common Sense Media has a long list of other great time management apps for kids . When there are in-app purchases, scroll down to see what the details are, she recommends.

“Often it’s just a subscription,” she said. “But if it’s a whole string of $1.99 purchases, they probably are going to push that on your kid. I’d say, ‘No.’”

Hello Christian, This is certainly a great list of productivity tools for University students. I’m currently studying for my master’s degree and finding a tool that helps me in note-taking was extremely important. I have never been an Evernote fan, but rather searched for apps with features like Zettelkasten or second brain. I recommend to try out Hypernotes, one of the recent knowledge management note-taking apps on the market, as an alternative.

Regards, Jess

When I was a student, I used kanbantool.com to manage my projects. It helped me a lot, especially that I studied two faculties at once, so there was quite a lot of tasks to deal with. In fact, I still use the app, to manage my work… that’s how good it is!

Hey Sasha, thanks for writing in! Yeah, I love kanban systems, just checked out the kanban tool you mentioned, it seems a bit like Trello, is that right? I love Trello and Asana for organizing projects, definitely a must-have app for college students, job seekers (you can organize your job hunt), and everyone else!

You can probably guess what this app is about purely from the name. It’s a simple app that acts as your to-do list!

The simplicity of it gives it its charm. You may argue you could just use your Notes app to write your to-do list, but the tick box next to each task on Todoist makes things all that more satisfying.

Break each task down into subtasks, add due dates, assign peers to tasks and much more. Much like Chipper, you can also set timers for each task too, which is great for keeping you on track with assignments.

Download Todoist on iOS or Android .

Focus To-Do: Pomodoro & Tasks

Tons of studies show how the Pomodoro technique is fantastic for productivity. If you’ve never heard of it before, the Pomodoro technique is named after the classic tomato timer you have in your kitchen.

It works by setting a timer to 25 minutes and focusing on a single task. When the timer ends, you take a 5 minute break. After four “Pomodoros†(25-minute work-intervals), you take longer breaks in 5 minute increments.

This app is literally based on science, so who can argue with that? Manage your to-do list, time your tasks, set reminders, track what you work on the most and much more!

Why the Pomodoro technique works

It helps those who get distracted easily and lose track of time

Keeps goals and task completion realistic – i.e, stops you biting off more than you can chew

It’s especially useful for those who enjoy gamified task completion

Taskheat — Visual To-Do List, wasn’t specifically designed for students. But in terms of how visual it is, it would work fantastic for those who need to organise their tasks in an interesting way.

The app makes use of flow charts and colours to keep things looking neat and organised. It also lets you see which tasks are connected to each other for easy organisation. If you’re bound to forget about deadlines, its handy notification feature will make sure you stay on track too.

Use Apple products? All of your data automatically syncs with iCloud, meaning you can access Taskheat on any Apple device you own.

Everyday – Track Habits & Goals

Yet another app that wasn’t specifically designed for students. Everyday isn’t a planner as such, but more of a habit and goal tracker.

Why would a habit tracker be useful for students? It helps form discipline and visualises your progress with colours you input on each day. Overtime, whether that’s over the week, month or year, you can see how habits and positive changes have been formed.

Simply add all the habits or goals you wish to track, and pop a colour in to indicate whether you worked towards it.

Get Everyday on iOS , Android and Google Chrome .

Think of Trello as a virtual pinboard without the extra weight and stationary. It’s a visual tool that allows you to create lists and cards (your tasks) underneath those lists.

It’s fantastic for team projects, making it a good student planner, but also works as a handy self-organiser for all sorts of things. It’s totally free to use and available on both Apple and Android devices too.

Assign cards to peers, add deadlines, add a cool background to keep you motivated and use coloured labels to categorise your cards. The beauty of Trello is that it’s completely customisable. Make organisational boards about pretty much everything!

How to create a good study plan

Downloading a study planner app, even if it’s the best study planner app out there, it’s kind of useless if you don’t use them in a way that’s productive and beneficial for your studies.

Here are some really simple yet super effective ways to create a study plan that works for you.

Be honest about your study habits (or lack thereof)

There’s no shame in not having had a study plan before. What better time than the present to get started!

If you’ve noticed you burn out easily, or things are going through one ear and out of the other, it might be time to switch up your learning style too.

Look at your current schedule

Do you actually have time to study during the week? Are there any gaps where you can fit in study time? See where you can make room and plan accordingly.

Plan how much study time each class or assignment needs

Some classes, homework, and assignments will take longer than others to complete. If you know you need the extra time, see where you can cut back on other commitments.

Develop a study schedule using one of our recommended study planner apps

We recommend giving them all a go! At the end of the day, one of them may work better for you than the other. So why not give them a download, have a play around and see which one you want to make a concrete schedule with?

Stick to your study plan

This is a given, but once you’ve found something that works for you, make it a point of sticking to it. Not only will this help propel your studies, but you’ll ultimately feel far less stressed out.

Plus, the benefit of study planner apps is most, if not all, have notifications enabled. Meaning you can set notifications for when you need to complete your tasks or study!

What are the benefits of a student assignment planner?

A student assignment planner is a routine or a guide that students create in order to better organize and communicate.

Students use these planners more likely to keep track of their assignments, set personal goals for students, and enhance communication between students, teachers, and parents. The four effective ways student planners can enhance learning are as follows:

Improves Organization

The organization doesn’t come fluently to utmost scholars. It requires constant effort and a great deal of planning; qualities that some pupils need.

Students frequently get frazzled and confused with having to keep up and plan for their numerous classes, assignments, test dates, and so forth. Due to lack of association, scholars’ work or grades frequently suffer.

Assignment planners give an easy and creative system of taking note of their commitments and deadlines. It gives them a systematized approach to recording the necessary information on a day-to-day basis.

These are also related over the course of time, enabling students to prepare and be ready with their class necessities and activities.

Tracks Achievements

I’m a tutor myself. My schedule has just gotten too busy. I would appreciate some advice on how to prepare my lesson plan before class.

' src=

Hello Supriya,

The learning objectives for the lesson must be determined before you can begin to plan it. In contrast to what the learner will be exposed to during instruction, a learning aim explains what the learner will know or be able to do following the learning experience.

Estimate how much time you will spend on each learning activity as you plan them.

Finding out if your students are learning is made possible through assessment planning. Students have the chance to demonstrate and practice the knowledge and abilities outlined in the learning objectives through assessments (such as examinations, papers, problem sets, and performances), and instructors have the chance to give specific comments that can direct further learning.

After a lesson, there is an opportunity to reinforce what the students have learned. Instructors and students can both benefit from lesson closure. Hope you find this useful.

Could you please assist me in providing some tips on how to meet multiple deadlines? Thanks in advance.

Hello Manohar,

Here are some helpful hints for juggling many deadlines without becoming exhausted: Make sure you can actually see your workload, whether you write it down on a whiteboard or enter it into an app. You can use this to plan your timetable and break up the work at hand into more manageable chunks.

Organize your time by deciding what is urgent versus what is important, and then decide which projects will demand the most of your time, effort, and resources.

Try dividing up large projects into little chores if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the number of deadlines on your calendar. In this manner, you’ll remain on track to achieve your deadline and feel more driven to complete the task. I hope these suggestions prove useful.

I work as a teacher. How can assignments be given to students in the best way possible without putting them under pressure?

Hello Rajmohini,

When giving out assignments, teachers need to be especially careful. Students may tune out and refuse to complete their assignments if it is too difficult, or takes too long. Students’ homework assignments ought to build on what they have learned in class. Consider these suggestions on how to assign homework to make sure it is clear and appropriate:

1. Establish a regular homework schedule at the start of the school year, 2. Give the students tasks they can complete, 3. Give homework in small clusters, 4. The assignment should be written on the chalkboard and left there until it is due, 5. Periodically remind pupils of due dates, 6. Work together with other educators to avoid a glut of assignments.

The design is unique, too, with circles showing what percentage of a task is completed and how much more you have to go. Available for: iPhone, Android, Windows 8, Windows Phone and the web. Requires iOS 8.0 or later. Cost: Free

Another cool feature is that you can organize all of your assignments by date, course or priority, and you can sort them by pending and completed as well. Other bonus features include the ability to add contact info for all of your teachers and the ability to enter your grades so you can track how your GPA is doing.

Unfortunately, none of the apps listed above will actually do your homework for you — that part’s still up to you — but at least they’ll make it more likely that you’ll get it finished on-time and stress-free.

The organization was established over 50 years ago and works “to change the trajectory of high-potential Black youth by providing unique programming in the classroom and beyond.” Their scholars complete a four-year fellowship that includes academic enrichment, leadership development, career exposure, mentoring and college access.

Students must maintain a grade point average near 3.0 to remain in good standing with the organization — a bar the organization sets knowing full well that access to scholarships and grants for college will be the only way that most of its students can afford to go. Not all students meet this threshold despite mentoring from caring adults and strong support from administrative staff. Thus additional academic supports are needed.

Over many years, EE provided programs to help get students back on track if they started to flounder and to establish academic habits that put them on a trajectory for success. We started by offering weekly group tutoring events at the organization’s facility that not only helped students with homework completion and exam prep but also provided lessons on learning strategies, goal setting, and self-advocacy. However, traveling to the facility after school was a burden for some scholars, so EE tutors also met students at libraries and other public locations to provide support in specific subject areas where students requested help. Year after year we met with administrators and added additional resources: a summer school study skills workshop for freshmen and final exam prep workshops for all grade levels. Our unique array of programs allowed the organization to support their scholars at every stage of their academic journey.

The mission of the organization is to fight for economic mobility among highly motivated, first-generation college students by providing mentoring and intensive career development. The agency was founded on the belief that socioeconomic status should not be a barrier to college persistence and career success.

Their staff found that many of their participants were struggling with writing assignments of all sorts in college. From essays in English class to writing cover letters for potential summer internships, many students were not effective writers. The organization provided various career development workshops throughout the academic year, but they lacked a writer’s workshop to specifically address this area of weakness.

We met with program managers and the executive director to discuss their students’ needs and what type of program would be beneficial. The Writer’s Practice Workshop was an ideal fit for them. The course allowed students to understand that everyone is a writer even if they don’t think of themselves as such. Over the course of four sessions students assessed their own writing process; discussed the tools of a good writer’s practice; considered the audience, purpose, and the needs of any piece; and produced writing on topics that were important to them. Students left the workshop with a greater understanding of how to start assignments and follow steps to revise, edit, and polish for best results, giving them confidence in their writing.

The organization’s mission is to provide opportunities for underserved youth to achieve academic and personal success via financial, educational and personal support during their high school years. They provide tuition assistance to attend a high-quality school along with the guidance and commitment of caring, adult mentors. They aim to serve an often overlooked segment: academically “average” students from the city’s most challenging and underserved neighborhoods.

Program staff wanted to help their students prepare for final exams and train mentors to more effectively support students in their exam prep efforts. Volunteer mentors were available to give support, but the organization lacked a consistent approach on how best to help students and make them better learners.

EE met with program administrators and board members to plan and implement a Final Exams Workshop in the lead-up to final exams. The 3-hour workshop was attended by students and their mentors on a Saturday morning. The curriculum helped students create DIY study guides for any class, plan a study schedule, prioritize final exams by difficulty and need, assess and discuss their strengths and weaknesses in regards to learning strategies, and share with peers their successes or concerns. We also facilitated a conversation between mentors and mentees as to how they could best support their students in the coming weeks. Students and mentors left the workshop with a blueprint for attacking finals week in the most efficient way — a plan they could use for high school and college.

The organization supported immigrants and their families by connecting women from over 60 countries who share a dedication to the pursuit of global understanding and universal human rights. As part of their philanthropic arm, the organization supported a local elementary school they had identified as highly diverse with a large number of immigrant students. Before engaging EE, the organization relied mostly on volunteers to provide reading support to students during school hours.

After discussions with the organization and the school principal, teachers, families, and other stakeholders, we developed a school year calendar of after school programs that would help students develop the skills needed to succeed in elementary school and beyond. We provided courses for grades 5-8 in the spring and fall, greatly expanding the enrichment opportunities the NFP was able to provide. In doing so, we developed a close relationship with the school administration and their teaching staff, who saw the positive impact the program was having on their students. Additionally, the NFP was able to expand their mission to areas where they saw a great need: improving study skills, raising test scores, and increasing access to high school opportunities for immigrant youth.

A scholarship foundation funded by a suburban country club was disappointed with the caliber of student who typically applied for their college scholarship offerings. Knowing that the skills needed for success in college must be cultivated from an early age, they wanted to establish a summer enrichment program for students entering 9th and 10th grade that would serve as an early intervention and better position the pool of applicants when the time came a few years later to apply for the college scholarships.

We collaborated with the foundation to identify areas of strength and weakness in their applicant pool and listened to their personal beliefs about what it takes to succeed in college. With that understanding, we customized a version of the Summer Learners’ Workshop that lays the foundation for college-level skills and caters to the learning styles and academic backgrounds of the particular students at this organization.

The resulting program has gained a reputation as one of the top summer enrichment experiences in that community with parents routinely reporting that the results exceeded their expectations. The program is now attended by an even wider array of students than those who were first targeted by the foundation.

A charter school network was seeking to implement a test prep program across eight campuses to prepare their 8th grade students for the Chicago Public Schools selective enrollment entrance exam. The high school admissions process is highly competitive, and it was the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic when students were learning from home. The schools did not have expert knowledge about the contents of the test, and finding staff at their schools to cover a program outside of school hours would be challenging. Administrators knew how competitive the admissions process was and that even their strongest students were not guaranteed a spot. For equity, they wanted to offer the course to all of their students – even those who were very unlikely to be admitted to a selective enrollment school.

Given the wide array of students, the EE team worked with individual school counselors to create ability groupings, determine a process for reporting attendance, progress, and behavior issues, and create a curriculum that would be effective in a remote learning model. We knew that remote engagement for an after school program would be a challenge, so we incorporated competitive team games, a leaderboard of accomplishments, and other incentives to encourage maximum participation. EE provided all management and instructional staffing to deliver the test prep course successfully while freeing up teachers and counselors at the charter school to focus on their daily workload. Students received a robust course focused on strategies, practice tests, and concept review that put them in the best position to maximize their potential on test day.

A leading scholarship fund that provides financial assistance for highly qualified, low-income students knew that financial aid alone would be insufficient to ensure their students’ success at rigorous private and parochial high schools. Therefore, they sought an intensive summer program to prepare scholars for what lay ahead.

EE worked with the organization to determine the biggest challenges scholars would face. We landed on a wide array of non-cognitive skills that are not necessarily taught in middle school: time management, organization, self-advocacy, focus, growth mindset, etc. Inspired by this challenge, we developed our Ideal Student Workshop, which would later become the basis for our Learners’ Workshop.

Over a decade later we are still delivering the program to students at this scholarship fund and others. The program works to develop the three dimensions of successful students: character, learning strategies and habits. We update the program yearly to keep up with changes in student needs and the educational landscape. Our fun and research-based curriculum continues to be a popular summer bridge for various organizations.

A prominent sports-based youth development organization wanted to improve one of the core elements of their program: providing educational enrichment programs to their participants.

Their goal was to offer a continuum of services for 9th-12th graders that would support students in their schoolwork, provide a pathway to college, and create a culture of learning amongst players. EE was uniquely positioned to offer a variety of services to meet this need: private tutoring, study skills classes, writing courses, high school admissions test prep, SAT/ACT prep, and college readiness seminars. We listened to the players, parents, and other stakeholders to determine which programs were most effective, established expectations for participants, and decided on the best timing and format to deliver the courses.

Since 2017 we have successfully delivered these services allowing their administrative team to focus on their primary coaching responsibilities. Ultimately, the best praise we have received is that we have provided a wide circle of caring adults to support students academically and emotionally and that we have listened to their needs and adapted our offerings to suit their participants.

5 apps to keep track of homework assignments

The new school year is almost upon us, and there's no time like today to get ready.

Whether you are the student or it's someone else in your family, it's important to keep things organized and on track from day one.

While these apps can be useful for a wide age group, be sure and check with your local school district to ensure you're not breaking any rules by sending your child or teen to school with a smartphone.

1. Evernote Price: Free Download: Evernote for iPhone / iPod Touch / iPad , Android , Window Phone 7 , BlackBerry , Palm Pre / Palm Pixi , Mac , Windows , web .

While it's not an actual planner or calendar app, if you take notes to stay organized, then Evernote is for you. Take photos, copy web pages, save PDF files or just take notes and organize them all into folders. Search for your notes via tags or keywords in the notes themselves. Evernote can even search for words located in pictures you've taken — a pretty cool feature.

You'll never lose another sticky note or forget a reading assignment when you jot it down in Evernote. Just pull up your notes on whatever device you have, wherever you are. Free accounts are allowed up to 60MB of upload (or synchronized) data per month, which can be upgraded for $5 per month or $45 per year.

2. FC Tasks Price : $5.99 Download : FC Tasks for iPhone .

FranklinCovey is one of the best-known names when it comes to pencil and paper (even digital stand-alone) day planners. You would expect this company to have a mobile app to help make our lives more organized, and you would be right.

The FC Tasks app is a great stand-alone mobile product for anyone who's used to using the FranklinCovey system of productivity and time management. You'll see the familiar ABC-123 ranking method for all the task lists, but that's only the beginning. With this app, you can create recurring tasks, create multimedia tasks, delegate tasks via email and more. This is a top-of-the-line app from a top-of-the-line company.

3. Remember the Milk Price: Free to download; requires Remember the Milk Pro for Android and BlackBerry users. Download: Remember the Milk for iPhone / iPad , Android , BlackBerry .

Remember the Milk is a great to-do list service. The basic service is available online and can be integrated with web apps such as Gmail, desktop apps such as Outlook and the mobile app platforms listed above. Set your tasks, prioritize and get email alerts when they are due. It's everything you want in a to-do list.

While the web app is great, taking Remember the Milk on the road is the key to making this app work for you. Browser add-ons and widgets for other apps such as Gmail make this service seamless with other apps that you're already using. Read more in our Remember the Milk review .

4. ToDoMatrix Price : Free Download : ToDoMatrix for iPhone , BlackBerry .

The free version of the ToDoMatrix app is limited to six folders and 30 tasks, which is probably enough for you if you're a casual user. If you're looking for something more than just a homework tracking app, you'll want to look at in-app upgrades to remove these limits.

What started as a productivity app designed for business-minded BlackBerry users has made the transition to mainstream with the debut of its iOS app. Organize tasks, set flexible reminders, delegate and view just what you want with multiple display options. Your data is encrypted and backed up wirelessly to the cloud. If you're a BlackBerry user, you probably already know about this one; if not, it's definitely worth checking out the free version to see if it meets your needs.

5. Google Calendar Price : Free Download : Google Calendar for web , iPhone Sync , Windows Mobile Sync , BlackBerry Sync .

We've saved the best for last, despite the non-app status of this service. We think you'll agree once you see how seamlessly this free service from Google integrates with literally all of your devices. Start out on the web app and set up your calendars. From there, you can sync your calendar to all of the major mobile operating systems out there.

Google Calendar doesn't miss a beat with Google's own Android OS , as would be expected. Once you set up your Android device, it's an automatic sync with the Google apps on your mobile device. If you're on another operating system, syncing the built-in calendars on these mobile devices to your Google Calendar account is simple. There are few limitations, flexible reminders, multiple calendars, share features and more.

Getting your time back It takes a little practice to see which planner or homework tracking app is going to work best for you. Don't wait until the last minute. Start now, before school kicks off, and try them all (or at least the free ones). Once you've settled on which app design works for you, don't look back. There's no point in second guessing your choice, and once school starts, you will want to feel confident in your ability to use your app to organize your time so you don't miss any important deadlines.

EduTech: The best iOS apps for keeping track of assignments, due dates, and more

Avatar for Chance Miller

EduTech is a new 9to5Mac weekly series that will focus on technology’s application in education, lower and higher level, both for productivity and enjoyment. If you have suggestions for topics or specific questions you’d like to see answered, feel free to let me know. Catch up on past installments here .

In this week’s installment of EduTech, we’re going to break down the best apps on iOS stay organized, keep track of assignments, and more. Some of these apps are specifically made with education in mind, while others were developed with a broader focus yet still offer benefits to educators and students alike.

This is arguably one of the best applications of technology in education. Keeping track of things like assignments, due dates, and tests used to be a tedious task that required the use of a physical planner to truly stay on top of things. With iOS, however, there are many apps that make it easy to stay on top of your work. Read on for my full list…

The Homework App

One of the most popular scheduling apps on iOS is simply called “The Homework App.” Available for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, this app features a minimalistic design that offers support for your class schedule, homework schedule, and more.

best app to keep track of assignments

On the main screen of the app, you see a broad overview of what you have going on, including the number of classes you have that day, the assignments you have due, your schedule, and more. From there, you can dive deeper into the specifics of what you have going on with sub details for assignments, color coding, and more.

The Homework App also offers a widget in Notification Center, as well as an Apple Watch app for on-the-go tracking. There’s also notification support to ensure you never forget a due date.

The Homework App is free on the App Store .

myHomework Student Planner

This app, while still simplistic, offers a few more customization options than The Homework App. On the home screen of the app is a basic overview of all of the homework you have due, while you can filter it by class, priority, and type.

One thing that sets myHomework apart is its support for classes that occur every other day, like in a college environment. While The Homework App does support this, you have to set up each day individually as opposed to telling the app the alternation schedule. myHomework, however, allows you to choose which days a class occurs rather than assuming it occurs every week day.

myHomework Student Planner offers iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch support. It’s available for free on the App Store .

Class Timetable

Returning to the simplicity over features theme, Class Timetable is an incredibly simple app that allows you to keep track of classes and assignments. The home screen of this app is a simple list of your classes for that day, while a separate Tasks window shows your assignments and when they are do.

Class Timetable is color coded and supports a color coded week view when you rotate your device to landscape view.

While Class Timetable is free, there’s a “Pro” update available via in-app purchase for $0.99. With that upgrade, you get class notifications, timetable export, task reminders, and more.

Class Timetable is available on the App Store and supports iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch.

My Study Life

My personal favorite planning app is My Study Life. In my testing, I’ve found this one to be the most feature-rich apps available, while also offering a simplistic and easy to navigate design.

One of my favorite features is the “Tomorrow” preview at the bottom of the app’s home screen. This preview shows how many classes you have on the next day, the tasks you have due, and if you have any exams. My Study Life is also smart about handling exam and class interferences, alerting you of the conflict and allowing you to add revision tasks.

You can view your upcoming tasks and classes with month and week views, as well as detailed daily views with building numbers, times, and more.

My Study Life is available on the App Store for free , but there’s no iPad or Apple Watch app at this point.

Fantastical

While this app wasn’t developed with education specifically in mind, it’s still one of the best planning apps available. Available on both iOS and macOS, Fantastical is a beautiful calendar app with cross-platform syncing, Apple Watch support, and iMessage integration.

We’ve covered Fantastical extensively in the past and I continue to recommend it. You can import from other calendar services, sync between your various devices, and much more.

As for education-specific purposes, you can enter assignment due dates, exam dates, meetings, and more.

Fantastical 2 is available for $2.99 on iOS  and $49.99 on macOS .

Another app that wasn’t developed with education specifically in mind, but yet still is one of the best apps for assignment tracking and remembering test dates. OmniFocus is task management app that allows you to enter in a task, assign a due date, and receive notification reminders to complete that task.

The app centers around being easy to use and allowing you to get things done as efficiently as possible. For each day, you’ll see a number that represents the number of tasks that you have due that day.

The app is also location-aware, meaning you can assign a location to specific task and be reminded of it when you approach that location.

OmniFocus is available for iOS, Apple Watch, and iPad on the App Store , while there’s also a macOS app .

Other to-do apps

best app to keep track of assignments

To-do apps are a great way to remember tasks you have to complete. While OmniFocus is my personal favorite, there are a variety of other options, some of which are free, available on the App Store.

For education, to-do apps are relatively simple and work best for remembering assignments and exam dates rather than class meeting times. For many students, however, assignment and date tracking is the central need.

Below are some additional recommendations for to-do list applications:

  • Remember The Milk
  • Google Keep
  • Apple’s Reminders app

Those are just some of the apps that make it incredibly easy to keep track of assignments, classes, tests, and more. Everyone has their own methodology for tracking such dates and it’s really up to you to find the best app that fits your needs.

If you have any additional recommendations for organizing your school work and schedule, let us know down in the comments.

Ratings and Reviews

This app is extremely helpful with keeping track of all schoolwork and assignments. I’ve been using it for about two-three months now and it has literally saved me. I’ve tried out other apps to keep track of schoolwork, but this one is by far the best, because it allows you to streamline your process, all you need to do is quickly enter the title of your assignment, due date, and choose the class it belongs to, then instead of trying to keep track of your assignments in your head (if you’re anything like me you will forget half of them exist), you can just open that app and it provides a clear view of exactly what you need to get done. I’ve started to use this app to even keep track of meetings and other things outside of school because it works so well. A nice benefit is that for the necessary features it doesn’t require you to pay, although the premium version does allow you to have a few nice perks. Other apps sometimes require you to pay for features that are necessary, such as adding more than a set amount of assignments, but with MyHomework you get free reign, even with the free version. My only slight issue is that it doesn’t work very well in the multitasking view on iPad. Other than that, this app is amazing and I would highly recommend it.

Great App! Small Glitch

I have been using this app for over a year, and let me say that this has saved my grades. I have a physical planner where I write down my homework, but by the middle of the year, I always seem to forget to write it down. Since I’m on my phone a lot, it’s so convenient to be able to quickly jot it down in this app. Literally, I could be relaxing and then I’ll get a notification that I have an assignment due tomorrow which I completely would’ve forgotten to do. It’s also convenient as a schedule since you can write down the name of your teacher, the room number, and the time/period your class starts. Even the color coding feature is super helpful since you remember what class the assignment is for easily and it’s great for aesthetic purposes. My only issue is right now is this glitch. I recently upgraded from an iPhone 6 to and iPhone 7. I noticed that there’s the whole screen is kinda shifted up from where it should be and some of the words get cut off, so I don’t know what I’m reading or writing down. It’s pretty annoying, so I hope you guys fix that asap.

Switched from paper planner to this app

Im a sophomore in high school and i often get slot of homework. School plus extracurricular means i have a very busy schedule and need something to help me stay organized. Before this app i used a paper planner which was great but sometimes inconvenient if i wanted to check if i had plans on a certain day or have homework due on a certain day but i don’t have my planner on me. So now that the new year 2024 has started i needed a new planner but i decided instead of buying on that i would look for a app. i tried one app b4 this which u didn’t like bc it didn’t have a calendar and you could put events or remídete . superrr inconvenient. This app literally had everything that I need and i can log what hw i have right when the teacher says it instead of having to get my planner and write it down . I’m super thankful for it . I recommend this app to any other high school student w extracurriculars and sometimes a busy schedule. ALSO this app works for ppl with A Days and B day schedule 👍👍👍👍👍

An overload of work can cause even the best teams to make mistakes. Read on to find several tools that can help you keep track of tasks.

No matter your organization’s size or industry, there are likely to be days where you feel like you’re buried under a mountain of work. You might have your job down to a science, but it’s easy for something to slip through the cracks when there’s so much on your plate. But if enough tasks fall off your radar, the occasional mistake can turn into a larger issue and keep you from staying on top of your workload. It can be hard to escape this spiral once you’re trapped in it.

One way out is by using a task tracking tool to help organize your work and remind you when something’s due – or past due. Once you master these tools, you can avoid ever getting in this stressful position of falling behind in the first place. Below are several valuable apps that can keep track of tasks and assist you in maintaining control over a hectic work schedule.

9 apps to keep track of tasks

Several organizational apps are available to help you manage busy work life. Each program brings its own features and benefits to the table that help manage your workload, and the one that’s right for you is the one that best and most naturally fits into your daily routine. One of the below nine options can help.

  • Microsoft To Do
  • Google Keep

Todoist is one of the more well-known task organization programs. Though it isn’t the most advanced task management tool out there, its simple interface enables several valuable features that help keep you organized. Labels and color-coded entries allow you to easily categorize tasks. In addition, you can further sort your assignments under specific project titles to keep your tasks further organized.

There are also options to track due dates and set priority levels for each task to encourage more efficient time management. Todoist also shows you which goals you should complete day-to-day and which you should finish down the line.

With its ease of use and wide availability on most systems, Todoist remains popular among task tracking apps. But its simplicity can become a burden: You can’t make a list of subtasks, which can make complex, multi-step projects harder to track.

Key features:

  • Labels and color-coded entries
  • Due dates and priority levels
  • Day-to-day and long-term task views, though no real distinction between tasks and subtasks

Price: Todoist offers a free plan, a Pro version that costs $3 per month, and a Business version that costs $5 per month.

Any.do stands out for its streamlined mobile app. The app’s sleek interface allows you to add tasks manually or with voice commands. You can set Any.do to trigger reminders based on the time and your physical location. Any.do also helps you plan your day by recommending which items on your to-do list you should complete first. Once you’ve finished all your tasks, a quick shake of your phone clears away the old list.

However, Any.do is primarily a mobile-based system. While it does have a web-based version, it’s really designed primarily as an app.

  • Add tasks manually or via voice command
  • Comprehensive reminder system with time- and location-based notifications
  • Shake phone to clear completed tasks, but can be difficult to use via web browser

Price: Any.do makes its basic version available for free. Its premium version costs $5.99 per month, $4.49 per month if billed every 6 months, or $2.99 per month if billed annually.

Fellow is more specialized than many other platforms when it comes to task management. Its unique features are geared toward helping project managers plan more productive meetings. For example, advanced meeting agenda creation tools allow you to ensure all key meeting tasks get addressed. And before the meeting, your whole team can add their talking points to ensure their checklists are part of your meetings. You can also assign meeting action items during the course of your meeting.

Beyond meetings, Fellow’s Streams feature doubles as a collaborative notepad. You can use it to create task lists to which you and others on your team can contribute. The Streams tool also has numerous applications for taking meeting notes , setting objectives and key results , and so much more.

Key features:

  • Compile task lists for meetings into one comprehensive document
  • Collaborate on written task lists outside meetings
  • Set meeting action items during meetings, though no audio recording of meetings

Price: Fellow is free for teams of up to 10 people. Larger teams pay $5 per user per month.

best app to keep track of assignments

TickTick is a task list app for phones and web browsers that helps you organize projects and boost productivity. You can easily add tasks and sort them by their due dates, with several added categorization options to help you keep track of your tasks. It comes with convenient email integrations that allow you to add new assignments right from your inbox. However, while TickTick offers a variety of features, even its premium plan doesn’t include options common in other task tracking apps.

  • Easily add tasks manually from your phone or web browser
  • Sort tasks by due date or other categories
  • Integrations that allow you to add tasks directly from your inbox

Price: TickTick offers a free plan, and its premium features cost $2.79 per month or $27.99 per year.

5 Microsoft To Do

Microsoft To Do boasts many features common in the most widely used task organization tools. The interface is uncluttered and easy to understand, letting you add new tasks to your list with ease. There are also prioritization and other sorting options to help you quickly refer back to your most pressing tasks.

Where Microsoft To Do shines most is its integration with Outlook and other Microsoft programs. For example, Outlook email users can add new tasks directly from their inboxes. Meanwhile, Windows customers may create new items in To Do using Cortana voice commands or typing them directly in the start menu.

Microsoft To Do also offers deep customization options for your lists, enabling you to view your task list however you please. That said, the program handles solely the basic features of task management programs. It lacks some key aspects of other project management tools. For example, there’s no advanced task prioritization, just the ability to star essential list items.

  • Simple interface with basic prioritization functions
  • Integrates with Microsoft Outlook for quick adding of tasks right from inbox
  • Some customization available

Price: Microsoft To Do is free.

6 OmniFocus

The main goal of OmniFocus is flexibility across all organizational needs. It does this through in-depth prioritization, advanced task filtering, and other sorting and viewing options, as the name implies. It’s well known for its three project types and six view options. Higher-priced tiers come with an even greater number of view options.

Additionally, OmniFocus integrates across all Apple devices, so you can quickly add new tasks from one device for it to appear on your others. This benefit is also OmniFocus’s primary drawback: Sync support for non-Apple devices is not a priority.

  • Advanced tools for task prioritization and filtering
  • Three project types and six view options, with more available in Premium
  • Easy task sync across all Apple devices, but not as robust for non-Apple devices

Price: OmniFocus offers a free 14-day trial. Thereafter, you’ll pay $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year.

7 Bear

Bear is among the more straightforward note-taking apps available for Mac and iOS, with a simple, uncluttered interface. It provides many basic features common in similar list apps, including checklist creation, task descriptions, and extensive notetaking options.

Bear’s rich text editor offers a diverse range of font options and other ways to customize your task lists to your preferences. It also includes a focus mode that helps you concentrate on your work without outside distractions. However, Bear locks some of the task list collaboration features available with other platforms.

  • Simple, uncrowded interface
  • Checklists, task descriptions, and diverse font library
  • Focus mode for distraction-free work, but lack of collaboration features

Price: Bear’s basic features are free. Premium features cost $1.49 per month or $14.99 per year.

8 Google Keep

Google products are an everyday presence for many professionals in some shape or form, and task-tracking tools are no exception. Google Keep is among the most straightforward options for a task management app, offering fast note-taking and options to embed images or audio for greater detail. From there, you can transform any note you’ve taken into a checklist with the ability to color-code and organize each item.

Google Keep also offers the ability to set custom reminders that you can set to alert you based on the time or your physical location. It can even accommodate you if you prefer writing with pen and paper. That’s thanks to its option to scan physical notes and transfer them onto a digital medium.

While Keep does offer lots of options, its feature list is still limited compared to its competitors. After all, Google developed it as a simple note taking app, not an advanced productivity app . As a result, if you’re looking for a heavy-duty task management platform, you might be better off with other options.

  • Syncs across all Google products for easy task list access and sharing.
  • Scans physical handwriting and transfers online if you prefer creating pen-and-paper task lists
  • Custom reminders based on time or location, though it has fewer similarly advanced features

Price: Google Keep is free with any Gmail or Google Drive account.

If winning a game motivates you, Habitica is the right option. This platform “gamifies” your to do list by connecting your progress to a role playing game (RPG)-like interface. You create an avatar for yourself and then set several goals you’d like to achieve. Each time an item is marked off, your avatar gets a reward. If an item is ignored or otherwise incomplete, the character loses health. Level up together with other members of your team, which helps motivate everyone to get rewarded. Keep in mind, though, that Habitica is geared toward short-term goals.

Key Features:

  • Video-game like setup unlike most other task tracking tools
  • Allows tasks to be completed collaboratively
  • Clear visual indicators of task progress, but imperfect layout for tracking long-term tasks

Price: Habitica is free to start, with a paid version available for $5 per month.

Don’t let your workload get the better of you

With so many options available to keep track of tasks, getting back on top of your work is well within your reach. Even if you haven’t had much trouble managing tasks, the programs on this list can likely help you with other work needs. For example, Fellow is a reliable task tracking and assigning app that also excels at streamlining your meetings. With its convenient templates to help you set meeting objectives and collaborate on notes , Fellow is a task management app that checks all your boxes.

  • These apps helped me tame the chaos of a sudden move

From note-taking apps to all-in-one browser tab managers, here are some of the tools that kept me, a massive mess, organized.

By Sheena Vasani , a writer covering commerce, e-readers, and tech news. She previously wrote about everything from web development to AI at Inside.

Illustration of a person sitting on a couch in the outline of a phone overlayed on top of a scene of the couch being carried in a storm by two movers.

When you’re moving during the competitive summer months, time is of the essence. And I totally squandered it when I moved last year for one simple reason: I was living in a pigsty.

My place was a mess and my digital space was even worse. Granted, I was going through a lot at the time, and I was being forced to move after spending years in the same place. As I descended further into overwhelm trying to make heads or tails of the move, clutter just built up. It got so bad, I missed out on a few potential apartments because I misplaced the application link or forgot about it altogether.

I’d like to say I learned the error of my ways and developed a great system for physical decluttering, but I didn’t. My place remained a pigsty until the day I left. However, I did manage to research tools to help me keep track of the digital aspects of moving. And thanks to those tools — which I’ve listed below — I lined up a new place to trash in no time.

Now, let’s jump in.

OneTab for tab management

When I first started apartment hunting, I was the kind of person who always had 1,000 tabs open at a time. Now, I only have 500, and I’d like to thank OneTab for that.

A screenshot of the OneTab tab management window listing all tabs in one central location for easy and quick access.

This browser-agnostic tool ( Chrome ,  Firefox ,  Edge , and  Safari ,) lets me easily see and organize multiple tabs and even different browser windows, which made it so much easier to keep track of the links and listings I needed. It not only closed all of my tabs but also generated a list of them — timestamped by session — which I could reopen, export, share as a webpage, and more. As a result, I wasn’t avoiding looking at the mess that was my laptop anymore, which meant I started replying to landlords faster.

But that just helped me for a little bit. The real game-changer was Notion.

Notion: a great all-in-one organizational tool that saved me a lot of time

My biggest mistake was not having an organizational system in place from the get-go. Once I created a dedicated workspace in Notion for everything from tracking my apartment search to storing all the checklists I needed before, during, and after the move, life got a lot easier.

A screenshot of Notion’s collection of premade templates for house hunting.

I tried other apps, but they weren’t as customizable or intuitive for me as Notion. Creating a dedicated workspace for the multiple parts of my move was easy because I could easily divide it all into different pages for research into movers, budgeting, decluttering, and more. Notion also offers ready-made templates , many of which are free, created by other people who have gone through similar moves — like this one I used in my search or this template my colleague Emma Roth used. Having a premade database with fields for rent, location, and so forth was such a time-saver.

Screensheet of a moving dashboard you can create on Notion with an index, calendar, and other important information.

What I really appreciated — and what really sped things up — were Notion’s web clippers and third-party integrations . The web clippers allowed me to quickly save listings from Zillow or research from Yelp directly into my Notion workspace, for example. That in itself reduced my tabs far more than OneTab. Notion also let me sync apps like Google Calendar so I could more easily keep track of all my tours and deadlines in one place.

Keeping emails organized during your search

Okay, I’ll be honest: I didn’t stumble upon the Gmail Tabs extension until after I moved, but I know I will be heavily relying on the desktop app extension for my next. The extension, which I waxed poetic about in this post , gives you a level of flexibility that goes far beyond Gmail’s built-in tab options. It lets you turn your labels or search queries into tabs you can pin at the top of your inbox, right where Gmail’s Social, Promotions, Updates, and Forum tabs live. You can then set up filters to funnel all relevant emails into the appropriate categories.

Screenshot of a Gmail inbox with tabs that are customized reading “Apartment Sites” and “Craigslist.”

That means you could, for instance, create categories for property notification emails from sites like Zillow or HotPads, rental applications, and other things for quick and easy access. You can delete and edit the names of the tabs as often as you want, rendering it a helpful organization tool throughout the entire moving process. After you find a place, you can get rid of that tab and add a new one for all your moving company-related emails, another one for incoming emails about things you might be selling, say, via Craigslist, and more.

Voice assistants can be super useful when you’re crunched for time

Those final weeks before you have to move are killer, and I found myself running around frantically. I was juggling dozens of things at once, and it felt like my brain was about to explode with information and dates. So I outsourced half of my brain to Alexa — sort of. I synced my Google Calendar with my Echo Show 8. That way, whenever an opportunity for a viewing came up, I could tell Alexa to add it to my calendar. Alexa was also helpful for keeping track of all the stuff I suddenly remembered at the last minute, like a change of address for a subscription or company.

Other small organizational hacks

Those are the biggies, but there were smaller tools that also helped me or people I know that I think are worth sharing.

Enlist a chatbot at the beginning

AI chatbots like ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini might not always be the brightest bots , but they can be helpful for planning and research purposes. ChatGPT did help a lot when I needed to break down the moving process into smaller steps so I felt less overwhelmed. I found it was also useful for summarizing articles and finding the best real estate sites in my area.

Take advantage of organizational features built into property websites

Many property websites offer features that can also help keep you organized, so make sure to check. I used Zillow a lot, so the Zillow Renter Hub stuck out. It offers an easy and centralized way to compare listings, manage tours, keep track of applications, message prospective landlords, and more.

Use inventory apps like Sortly to keep track of your stuff

Last but not least, there are a lot of inventory apps that can help you keep track of where you’ve packed everything. I know some people who have used Sortly , an iOS app that helps you create a visual inventory of your stuff, with photos. The premium tier, which costs $50 per month, also lets you create QR codes for your moving boxes (although most people won’t need to use it for more than a month or two).
