Cinemanatomy, confessions of a passionate ex-.

When I walked into Behindwoods, I had just one thing in mind. That one thing that many people have in their minds too. ‘Save Cinema’. I obviously did not know from what, but yeah I wanted to save cinema.   When I sat on my chair, relieved of the fact that I was finally there after a month long hardcore interview process, I learned that my colleagues were far more up to date about cinema than I was. I was surprised. So much that I just could not bat an eyelid and when I finally managed to bat one, the calendar had secretly swallowed two full years.   At Behindwoods, I had no training. I instead, was offered a large number of experiences and plenty of chances to learn from my mistakes. From writing news stories and articles to music reviews and slideshows to working on special events to serving as the creative head of the video team, I had absolute fun. It is probably in the gene of Behindwoods – to work with a smile on our faces. However, when there is a movie release, our faces suddenly turn serious.    Movie reviews at Behindwoods are not as easy as what the audience might think it is. It is an arithmetic calculation of the directorial excellence multiplied by the exuberance of the audience divided by the technicalities in the movie. Yes, it is as ‘head-scratching’ as mentioned. It is Math. A subject most of us hate. Finding X has always been a nightmare for us. Now you know why we are all serious about it.   Of course we’ve made mistakes. Sometimes when I wake up in the morning, I would see my Twitter feed filled with hate messages and comments. People have rechristened me with interesting names (mostly unpleasant) and have also suggested me other career options like begging and looting. I sometimes wouldn’t even know why I was being targeted (so would the people who target), until I get to office and find out that it was some post in Behindwoods by someone that offended them.    But over the last couple of years, I have made miniscule attempts to save cinema. I have even written columns about fan fights, piracy and other issues that linger in cinema. However, there is a bitter truth that I soon learned. People just don’t care.   For them, cinema has always been a hobby, a pastime, a mere source of entertainment out of their busy schedules. So they obviously wouldn’t care about the hundreds of lives that eat, drink and breathe cinema every day.   People continue to watch new movies online and fan fights continue to prevail in full josh. Whenever we post a picture of Ajith, we would be called Ajithwoods and when it is a picture of Vijay we become Vijaywoods. We just cannot help it. For them, it is entertainment. Sometimes I have even wished there was an actor named “Behind” so that people would call us “Behindwoods” when we post his picture.   But ultimately, what makes Behindwoods one of the top entertainment websites of Tamil Cinema? ANS: It is because we have a strong and passionate team that works day and night (literally) to keep the audience up to date of what is happening in Tamil Cinema.   From Videos to Interviews to News stories to articles to slide shows to Box Office Reports to Music Reviews to Movie Reviews – they all appear as mere products of Behindwoods to the general public. But there is a humongous amount of effort that is being put in to build every element of these products.   We are huge from the outside. But nobody would ever believe that a leading entertainment website churns out so much content from a three bedroom apartment in Guindy. It is not about the space we work in, but the people in it, who form a successful organization.    Sincere thanks to my fellow colleagues who traveled with me these couple of years, making my life at Behindwoods worthwhile.   It is indeed hard and disappointing to walk out of this remarkable media house. But I would always keep my head raised high as a proud ex-employee of Behindwoods.    I would also like to thank all celebrities like Dhananjayan sir, SJ Suryah sir, Parthiban sir, Sreekar Prasad sir, Vedhika, Surbhi, Taapsee, Dany, Anandhi, Hip Hop Aadhi to name a few and many others who have directly or indirectly appreciated my work.   I do not believe in superstitions. But there is one superstitious belief that Behindwoods has taught me. சென்னை: இயக்குநர் ஷங்கர் தயாரிப்பில் சிம்புதேவன் இயக்கிய இம்சை அரசன் 23ம் புலிகேசி திரைப்படம் மிகப்பெரிய வெற்றிப் படமாக மாறியது. சந்தானத்தை வைத்து அவர் இயக்கிய அறை எண் 305ல் கடவுள் படம் எதிர்பார்த்த அளவுக்கு வெற்றிப் பெறவில்லை. அதன் பின்னர் தொடர்ச்சியாக சிம்புதேவன் இயக்கிய இரும்புக்கோட்டை முரட்டு சிங்கம், விஜய் நடித்த புலி உள்ளிட்ட படங்கள் சொதப்பிய நிலையில், சினிமாவில் இருந்தே சில காலம் மாயமாகி விட்டார்.

கசடதபற, விக்டிம் உள்ளிட்ட படங்களையும் இவர் இயக்கினாலும், அந்த படங்கள் இவர் படங்கள் தானா என்பதே பலருக்கும் தெரியாத வண்ணம் புலி படம் தான் கடைசி படம் என்கிற நிலையிலேயே இருக்கிறது. இந்நிலையில், யோகி பாபுவை லீடு ரோலாக வைத்து இவர் இயக்கியுள்ள மற்றுமொரு 'பீரியட் பொலிட்டிக்கல் சட்டையர்' திரைப்படம் தான் இந்த போட்.

BOAT என்பதன் விரிவாக்கமே Based On A True Incident என டைட்டில் கார்டில் போட்ட இடத்திலேயே சிம்புதேவன் கம்பேக் என்பதை நிரூபித்துள்ளார். வடிவேலுவுக்கு இம்சை அரசன் படம் வெற்றிப் படமாக அமைந்தது போல யோகி பாபுவுக்கு இந்த படம் அமையுமா? என்கிற முழுமையான விமர்சனத்தை இங்கே பார்க்கலாம் வாங்க..

போட் கதை: 1943ம் ஆண்டு மெட்ராஸ் மாகாணத்தில் இந்த படத்தின் கதை அமைகிறது. இரண்டாம் உலகப் போர் ஒருபுறம், சுதந்திரப் போராட்டம் இன்னொருபுறம் இதில் கடற்கரை அருகே உள்ள முகாமை நோக்கி ஜப்பானிய விமானப்படை குண்டு போடப்போறாங்க என ஒரு தகவல் தீயாக பரவ அங்கே இருந்து தனது பாட்டியுடன் குமரன் (யோகி பாபு) தனது படகில் ஏறி கடலுக்குள் சென்று விட்டால் நிலத்தில் தான் குண்டு போடுவார்கள் தப்பித்துக் கொள்ளலாம் என நினைக்கிறார். அவருடன் மேலும், சிலர் அந்த படகில் ஏறிக் கொள்கின்றனர். ஆனால், அணுகுண்டை விட மனிதனின் சுயநலம் எவ்வளவு பெரிய கொடுரமானது என்பது அந்த படகு பயணத்தில் தெரிய வருவது தான் போட் படத்தின் கதை.

அரசியல் நய்யாண்டி: இம்சை அரசன் படத்திலேயே ஓவியம், அந்தப்புறம், மல்யுத்த போட்டி, அக்காமாலா, கப்சி, ஆங்கிலேயர்களுடன் இணைந்துக் கொண்டு இந்தியாவுக்கு எதிராக சதி செய்த அரச குடும்பத்தினர் உள்ளிட்ட பல விஷயங்களை அடுக்கி வைத்திருப்பார் சிம்புதேவன். அதே போல 1943ல் நடக்கும் கதைக்களமாக இந்த படத்தை எடுத்துக் கொண்டு சாதி, மத பாகுபாடு, இன்றைய அரசியல் சூழலில் நிலவும் பிரச்சனை உள்ளிட்டவற்றை அரசியல் நய்யாண்டியுடன் கையாண்டு இருக்கும் விதம் தான் இந்த படத்தை ரசிக்க வைக்கிறது.

பிளஸ்: யோகி பாபு படகோட்டியாக அசத்தலாக நடித்துள்ளார். அவரை தொடர்ந்து நூலகராக நடித்துள்ள எம்.எஸ். பாஸ்கர் ஸ்கோர் செய்கிறார். ஹீரோயினாக கெளரி கிஷன் அந்த கானா கர்நாடக சங்கீதம் பாடலில் ஸ்கோர் செய்து விட்டார். சாம்ஸ், ஷாரா, ஆங்கிலேய அதிகாரியாக நடித்துள்ள ஜெஸ்ஸி ஃபாக்ஸ் ஆலன், சின்னி ஜெயந்த், மதுமிதா மற்றும் லீலா என ஒவ்வொரு கதாபாத்திரத்திற்கும் ஆளமான பின் கதையை அமைத்தும் அவர்களுக்கு எழுதப்பட்ட வசனங்களும் தான் இந்த படத்தின் மிகப்பெரிய பலமே. படகில் கடலுக்குள் நடக்கும் கதை என்பதால் போர் அடித்து விடாமல் இருக்கும் அளவுக்கு ஜிப்ரான் பின்னணி இசையில் பிரித்து மேய்ந்துள்ளார். நீலக்கடலையும் இயற்கை அழகையும் மனிதர்களின் வெறுப்புணர்வையும் படம் பிடித்து காட்டியதில் ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் மாதேஷ் மாணிக்கத்தின் உழைப்பும் பாராட்டுக்குரியது.

மைனஸ் : லைஃப் ஆஃப் பை படத்தைப் போலவே படகை சுற்றியே படம் நகர்வதால் காட்சிகளை விட வசனங்கள் தான் படத்தை தாங்கிப் பிடிக்கின்றன. முதல் பாதியில் அது சுவாரஸ்யமாக இருந்தாலும், இரண்டாம் பாதியில் அதுவே சில இடங்களில் டல் அடித்து விடுகிறது. ஆனாலும், படத்தை முடிந்தவரை சுவாரஸ்யமாகக் கொண்டு சென்று தீவிரவாதி யார் என்கிற ட்விஸ்ட்டும் படகில் இருந்தவர்கள் என்ன ஆனார்கள் என்கிற பரபரப்பையும் கொடுத்த விதத்தில் இந்த 'போட்' பாராட்டுக்களை பெறுகிறது.

பாலிவுட்டில் ஆயுஷ்மான் குரானா நடிப்பில் வெளியாகி பிளாக்பஸ்டர் ஹிட்டான அந்தாதூண் திரைப்படத்தின் தமிழ் ரீமேக் தான் இந்த அந்தகன் திரைப்படம். ஸ்ரீராம் ராகவன் என்பவர் தான் இந்தியில் இப்படத்தை இயக்கி இருந்தார். இப்படம் பாலிவுட்டில் சக்கைப்போடு போட்டதோடு, இப்படத்திற்கு சிறந்த திரைக்கதை, சிறந்த படம், சிறந்த நடிகர் ஆகிய மூன்று தேசிய விருதுகளையும் வென்று அசத்தியது.

இப்படத்தின் கதையை பொறுத்தவரை, பார்வையற்றவராக இருக்கும் படத்தின் நாயகன் எப்படியாவது லண்டன் சென்று மிகப் பெரிய பியானோ கலைஞனாக வேண்டும் என ஆசைப்படுகிறார். அதற்கு ஏற்றார் போல ஒரு விபத்தின் மூலம் அவருக்கு காதலி கிடைக்கிறாள். காதலி வந்த பின் அவரது வாழ்வில் நடக்கக்கூடிய அடுத்தடுத்த சம்பவங்கள் தான் படமே. சிம்பிளான கதையாக இருந்தாலும் அதை தன்னுடைய விறுவிறுப்பான திரைக்கதையால் பிரம்மிப்பூட்டி இருந்தார் ஸ்ரீராம் ராகவன். அதே பிரம்மிப்பை தமிழிலும் ஏற்படுத்தினார்களா என்பதை பொறுத்திருந்து பார்ப்போம். அந்தகன் படம் பார்த்த ரசிகர்கள் எக்ஸ் தளத்தில் தங்கள் விமர்சனத்தை பதிவிட்டு வருகின்றனர். அதன் தொகுப்பை பார்க்கலாம்.

அந்தகன் அந்தாதூன் படத்தோட சிறந்த ரீமேக்கா இருக்கு. பிரசாந்த் சாரிமிங்காக இருக்கிறார், சிறப்பாகவும் நடித்திருக்கிறார். சிம்ரன் பர்பார்மன்ஸ் செம்ம. சந்தோஷ் நாராயணன் தான் படத்தோட ரெண்டாவது ஹீரோ என பதிவிட்டுள்ளார்.

அந்தாதூன் படம் பார்க்கும்போது கிடைத்த திகில் மற்றும் இனிமையான தருணங்களை அந்தகன் படத்திலும் வெற்றிகரமாக கொடுத்துள்ளனர். பிரசாந்தின் நடிப்பு டாப் கிளாஸ். சஸ்பென்ஸ் நிறைந்த கதைக்களம் என்பதால் கண்டிப்பாக பார்க்கலாம் என குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.

அந்தகன் படம் மெரிட்டில் பாஸ் பண்ணி இருக்கிறது. இது ரீமேக் படமாக இருந்தாலும் தமிழ் ஆடியன்ஸுக்கு தேவையானவற்றையும் சேர்த்து கொடுத்துள்ளனர். பிரசாந்தின் நடிப்பு அருமை வாழ்த்துக்கள் என பாராட்டி பதிவிட்டுள்ளார்.

துவண்டு போய் கிடந்த தமிழ் சினிமாவை காப்பாற்ற அந்தகன் வந்துவிட்டதாக நெட்டிசன் ஒருவர் பதிவிட்டுள்ளார்.

‘Andhagan’ movie review: Prashanth makes a splendid comeback with this imperfect yet satisfactory remake

Prashanth and simran carry ‘andhagan’, a faithful remake of ‘andhadhun’ on their able shoulders, making sriram raghavan’s brilliant source material the perfect comeback vehicle for the duo.

Top Star Prashanth is back! After headlining Johnny , the Tamil remake of Sriram Raghavan’s Bollywood film Johnny Gaddaar , it’s Andhadhun’s remake this time and Prashanth makes a brilliant comeback with Andhagan , helmed by his father and filmmaker Thiagarajan.

Prashanth isn’t particularly reknowned for his acting prowess; he peaked during the era when ‘the chocolate boy’ was a category of protagonists and known for his charming screen presence, he banked on the bandwagon of films that relied on his other talents like action and dancing. Hence, it’s no wonder Andhagan will be his best performance in probably decades thanks to the excellent source material.

As a pianist, pretending to be visually impaired in the name of an “experiment”, Andhagan’s Krish gives Prashanth the perfect space to showcase his talents and the experienced actor laps it up. Be it the scenes where he witnesses the murder of actor Karthik (Karthik) that’s orchestrated by the star’s second wife Simi (Simran) and her paramour Manohar (Samuthirakani), or the comparatively casual sequences where he falls in love with Julie (Priya Anand), Prashanth does a great job as a man putting on a show to deceive everyone only to be caught in his own web of lies. The film gives several opportunities for the character to indulge in moral ambiguity and as a man who barely wants to survive for a better tomorrow, Prashanth sells the character’s vulnerability and emotions well.

Andhagan (Tamil)

If you have watched Andhadhun , it might feel strange to see that the Tamil version to have even copied the “What is life? It depends on the liver” opening slide from the original film. But quick flashbacks of the tweaks Johnny had compared to Johnny Gaddaar reassured me that only a scene-by-scene remake would make this film work... and it does. So much so that it wouldn’t be an overstatement to call it a far better iteration than the Telugu and Malayalam remakes, Maestro   and Bhramam .

What makes the Tamil version stand apart predominantly, is its fantastic star cast. Inarguably, the crux of Andhadhun is Tabu’s character and with big shoes to fill, Simran had her work cut out for her. Prashanth and Simran’s characters are the living embodiment of how the duality of human nature works when stuck in a tight spot; while one tries to wiggle away to save themselves, the other would not think twice about bringing down the wall to make for a grand escape. Simran, in a powerful role after a long time in Tamil cinema, pulls it off so effortlessly that we almost forget that the duo fighting tooth and nail in Andhagan used to be one of the best onscreen couples in films like Kannedhirey Thondrinal, Parthen Rasithen, Thamizh and Jodi .

What comes as a pleasant surprise is Karthik, playing the role of the yesteryear hero trying to spice things up in life with a new wife. Be it the shot of him watching Mouna Ragam , or listening to ‘Panivizhum Malarvanam’ and ‘Kadhal Kavithaigal Padithidum’, and the music of ‘Keeravani’ playing while his character getting killed or the rendition of ‘Chandirane Suriyane’ and ‘Nenjukulle Innarunnu’, the film doubles as an homage to the thespian.

The rest of the cast do a decent job and while the recreation of the final showdown between the cheating cop and his wife might be a hit or a miss in the Tamil version, the roles played by Urvashi and Yogi Babu as the organ harvesters miss the mark by a mile. The film also lacks the zaniness of Andhadhun and some of the scenes fall flat but it’s the primary cast’s sheer performance that keeps the film in check. While the film’s songs don’t manage to stay put in our memory, the fantastic piano compositions stand apart.

Apart from turning out to be a satisfactory watch for those who have not caught Andhadhun , the film makes for a befitting comeback to Prashanth, one of Tamil cinema’s finest talents who hasn’t gotten their due. Here’s to hoping Andhagan turns out to be the rabbit’s foot for Prashanth!

Andhagan movie review: Prashanth and Simran's film is faithful but unengaging remake of Andhadhun

Andhagan movie review: prashanth’s film tries desperately to match andhadhun, which was a smartly crafted black comedy thriller, and falls short..

When Hindi film Andhadhun (The Blind Man) came out in 2018, it was hailed for its intricate screenplay and inspiring performances of Ayushman Khurana, Tabu and Radhika Apte. Tamil actor Prashanth’s father, actor-producer-director Thiagarajan bought the remake rights and had made it as Andhagan. While the movie was complete in 2022, it has taken two years for it to hit theatres. Prashanth essays the role of Krish, a blind piano player, in Andhagan. He lives alone with his cat and plays at a resto bar in the evenings to make his living. It is here that he meets Julie (Priya Anand) and the two become close. Yesteryear actor Karthick (who essays a similar role) is an also a frequent visitor to the bar and he falls in love with Krish’s music. Karthick invites Krish to his place for a private concert for his wedding anniversary to surprise his wife Simi (Simran). Landing up at the actor’s place, Krish finds he is not home and he receives a shock instead. There is a murder that is committed and Krish turns witness. What happens next?

The performances and more

Andhagan is a faithful remake of Andhadhun and director Thiagarajan has followed the script to a T. But having enjoyed the original Hindi film and the performances, the Tamil remake definitely falls short in numerous aspects including the casting and music.

Andhagan was a comeback vehicle for actor Prashanth who has not been seen in Tamil cinema for six years now. The 51-year-old actor who had some good films in his career, like Shankar’s Jeans, hasn’t had any big hits to speak of in the last two decades. In Andhagan, the actor looks jaded and not fresh and youthful which is imperative for the character of a charming piano player. This role was perhaps not what he should have chosen for a comeback though the movie has a good script.

Simran , on the other hand, is perfect as Simi, which was essayed by Tabu in the Hindi version. Priya Anand too is decent as Julie and numerous other characters, like Urvashi, Yogi Babu, Manobala, Leela Samson and Vanitha Vijayakumar, have been thrown to add weight and comic value to the film but this doesn’t do much for it. Yesteryear Tamil star Karthick is a misfit as Simi’s husband and moreover, his dubbing doesn’t match what he’s mouthing on screen which is very distracting. Again, Samuthirakani steps in as a cop - for the umpteenth time in Tamil cinema - and obviously it’s a cakewalk for him.

Music director Santhosh Narayanan is known for his spectacular songs and BGM but in Andhagan the songs are just terrible. Krish is a talented musician and plays at a bar for his livelihood but the songs he sings are tacky to say the least. This was quite unexpected from this talented music director who just gave us the massive Kalki 2898 AD .

Thiagarajan had to turn director for Andhagan after two directors walked out of the project. Having had a template already, it would have been easy to helm this film but Andhagan hasn’t been made exciting for the audience. The Tamil narrative is flat and the twists that come don’t pop on screen but play out very matter-of-fact for the audience. Had the director taken the script and made some changes to make it more engaging in Tamil it would have helped. The dialogues by Pattukotai Prabhakar also don’t evoke any emotions in the audience as they watch Krish’s character go through an emotional roller coaster from happiness to shock to fear.

Andhadhun was a smartly crafted black comedy thriller by Sriram Raghavan that kept you guessing and on the edge of your seat. Prashanth’s Andhagan tries desperately to match the original but falls short.

In 2019, Thiagarajan acquired the remake rights for Andhadhun, with Mohan Raja initially set to direct the project in 2020. However, Raja departed, and J.J. Fredrick briefly took over before Thiagarajan assumed directorial duties. Principal photography began in March 2021, primarily in Chennai, and concluded in November 2022.
