It’s Pizza Day on 9 February, which means it’s just the occasion to get your dose of this cheesy pie.

But don’t just savour your pizza.

tasty creative writing prompts

Creative writing prompts that are good enough to eat.

Today’s post features a selection of prompts from 1200 Creative Writing Prompts . Enjoy!

We all want our writing to be compelling, even mesmerizing. One effective way to captivate readers is to engage their senses.

When you engage a reader’s sense of sight, smell, sound, touch, or taste, you illicit a physiological response to your writing, and the reader will connect with it on a deeper, sensory level.

Food is a fantastic way to stimulate readers’ senses, because food has the rare ability to affect any or all of the senses. We see food, smell it, touch it, and taste it. We even hear it. Just think about french fries sizzling in a greasy skillet. Mmm.

Writing about food or incorporating food into our writing are ideal ways to engage readers’ senses. That’s why today’s creative writing prompts focus on food, drink, and delectable treats.

Creative Writing Prompts — Good Enough to Eat

Choose one of the creative writing prompts below and write a story, a poem, an essay, or a journal entry. Try to convey each of the five senses in whatever you write (sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch).

  • Write about a banana split: three scoops of ice cream with banana halves on either side and a big mound of whipped cream on top laced with chocolate sauce and sprinkled with chopped nuts—all topped off with a plump red cherry.
  • After a light but satisfying meal, you order dessert. It’s rich, sweet, and freshly baked. You bite into it and your taste buds explode with delight.
  • Write about the smell of cheesy, doughy, saucy, spicy pizza baking in the oven.
  • You dip your chip into a bowl of salsa, and when you take a bite, your mouth goes up in red-hot flames.
  • Write about the fizzing sound of cola being poured into a glass full of ice cubes.
  • You’re feeling under the weather, so you put the teapot on. Soon it starts to scream.
  • Write about the taste of medicine: cherry-flavored cough syrup.
  • Describe a grand feast: the spread of a holiday meal.
  • Write about waking up to the smell of hot, freshly brewed coffee.
  • It’s Halloween and you’re bobbing for apples. You stick your face in the cool water, chomp around searching for purchase, and feel the apples bumping against your face and floating away from you. Then you get a ripe little apple lodged firmly between your teeth.
  • Write about the sound in your head when you munch on crispy chips or crunchy crackers.
  • You’re digging your fingers through a box of hot, buttered, salted popcorn in a dark movie theater.
  • Write about the squishy sensation of kneading dough between your fingers and the smooth texture of it when you pat it and roll it out.
  • There’s a big bowl of chilled, fresh summer fruit in the fridge. It’s colorful, juicy, and sweet.
  • You’re driving through town with your windows down, and you pass that intersection where you can smell all the fast food restaurants.

Words to Describe Pizza

Words to Describe Pizza

Are you in search of words to describe pizza?

Creating a pizza description seems like a relatively simple thing to do. You’re good to go by listing all the ingredients and toppings.

Well, not quite!

Writing the perfect pizza description is an art; it takes a lot of effort to write those descriptions right.

So to help you out, here’s a list of all words to describe pizza that we could think of to help you write a perfect pizza description.

Let’s check them out!

Here’s What You Will Find:

How to write a pizza description.

Create a pizza description so that it leaves them salivating and wanting more. An ideal pizza description is a short one that explains the pizza dish and, ultimately, makes the reader want to ask for it.

Avoid long, incomprehensible food descriptions that confuse the reader about the dish.

Use terms to describe the color of toppings , pizza crust, pizza texture, sauces, cheese, the smell of cheese, especially when using blue-veined cheese, and the dough structure, and if you want to upscale your pizza description, we’ll show you how to describe pizza in a fancy way.

Whether you’re a pizza connoisseur or just someone who loves a good slice, this video will satisfy your craving for all things pizza.

So grab a slice and join us as we explore the tasty world of pizza vocabulary.

When choosing words to describe pizza, you must include descriptive terms for:

  • Pizza Dough
  • General Appearance
  • Garnishes and Finishes

For details on correctly writing a pizza description, check our article 7 Steps on How to Describe Pizza .

Let us explore words to use when addressing the above pizza aspects.

Describing pizza and the general appearance of a pizza, write the color of the toppings used, the size of the pizza, the state of the pizza as it comes off the grill , the size of the pizza, and the cooking method. For example:

  • Stone-oven fresh-baked pizza describes the appearance as fresh and the cooking method.
  • Mini pizza shows that it has a small general appearance.
  • Hot pizza tells you that it is sizzling hot.
  • Colorful pizza often describes the toppings used.

For instance, a Sicilian pizza is described as bright since its toppings include tomatoes, purple onions, anchovies, and herbs, which are colorful.

Soggy pizza represents one with too many toppings or a pizza whose toppings may not have been pre-cooked, resulting in excess moisture.

Ingredients contribute to the general appearance, such as the Hawaiian pizza, which is easily identified due to the pineapple toppings.

The Sicilian pizza, for instance, is described as a square cut since it appears in square cuttings and not the traditional triangle ones.

Similarly, the St.Louis pizza slices are called ‘party’ or ‘tavern’ cuts since they are sliced in 3 or 4 inc rectangular shapes.

Here’s a comprehensive word list and a list of adjectives commonly used to use to describe pizza.

Words to Describe Pizza Dough

The description of pizza dough ranges from its consistency to its texture. The smooth dough is used when a lumpy mass gradually smoothness to form a slightly tacky surface to touch.

Pizza dough is soft textured and foldable when made using flour with about 13 to 14% protein content and roughly 2 % oil in the dough mixture.

Well-kneaded pizza does not stick on the fingers during kneading but has a velvety smoothness and is impossibly stretchy.

Stiff pizza dough is incredibly silky since the gluten content strengthens, making it hard and hard to stretch.

Other forms of pizza dough include sourdough and gluten-free pizza dough.

Types of pizza dough for a freshly baked cooked pizza include:

  •   New York Style Dough

It is made with all-purpose bread flour and brown sugar to caramelize the base, thus giving it a distinct texture.

  • Neapolitan Style Dough

Pizza made using this style has its dough subjected to scorching temperatures for an easy stretch out and a nice charred bottom. Its texture allows it to absorb more water than other crusts without getting soggy.

Here’s a list of words to describe pizza dough.

List of Words to Describe Pizza Dough

Words to describe pizza crust.

The pizza crust is the hardened exterior surface that is the foundation of the pizza.

A pizza crust can be cheese-stuffed, wheat-thin crust, especially on light, healthier pizza options.

Or it can also be raised-edge thick-crusted pizza like the one on a Chicago pizza, crispy out crust as seen in the New York Style, a crunchy crust characteristic of the Sicilian pizza.

Other words to describe the crust are homemade, thick, and chewy, such as a Greek-style pizza, thick extra crispy crust featured on the Detroit Pizza, and cracker-like thin crust as seen on the St.Louis pizza.

Pizza crusts can also be a thin medium crust, charred crust as seen on the New Haven pizza, and a sweet thin crust where ingredients such as malt and molasses are used in the dough.

The vegan-friendly pizza crust is featured on specific variations of the Neapolitan pizza since it contains no animal by-products.

Words to Describe Pizza Smell

The aroma of a fresh slice of pizza is appealing and results in nose drools!

It derives its smell from the combination of ingredients used; some are more prominent than others.

A spicy pizza has an appetizing, aromatic, distinctive smell, primarily when oregano is used, and a fiery smell where the toppings are lots of chili flakes.

A fragrant, cheesy aroma is achieved after immediately removing the pizza from the grill.

Warm sensuous, and exotic, sultry smells are present where ingredients are exotic and tantalizing to taste.

Pizza cooked in a traditional oven tends to have a smoky scent, while pizza topped with fruits and herbs such as sultanas, thyme leaves, rosemary, basil, and the like tends to adopt a minty or fruity smell.

Pizzas adopt most of their smell from the type of cheese used to make them. Blue veined cheeses such as English Stilton, French Roquefort, and Italian Gorgonzola provide a distinct smell to your pizza.

They are soft, creamy, and crumbly and give the pizza a sweet, pungent smell derived from the mold and bacteria that promote their growth.

Here’s a list of words to describe the pizza smell.

Words to Describe Pizza Sauce

Pizza sauces are described in terms of color and taste. Describe a tomato garlic sauce with bright red color with a tangy taste.

Other words include barely scalded tomato sauce in lightly browned garlic, slow-cooked tomato garlic sauce, and a ‘dark, complex’ garlic-flavored tomato sauce for thoroughly cooked sauce variations.

The New York Style pizza sauce is easily described as an uncooked, unprocessed, fresh, bright, fat-free herby sauce. Any terms used to describe the sauce can be added or removed depending on your taste.

A good puree sauce is described as a dark deep red sauce or a blended, sweet, hearty sauce.

Peppery red sauces represent ingredients such as red pepper, cayenne, black pepper, and red pepper flakes.

These spicy sauces work best with savory-tasting pizzas with chicken steak, bacon, or mushrooms .

Sweet pizza sauces are those with tomatoes and added brown sugar. However, they are not meant for salty and savory pizzas unless combined with other sauces.

Ranch sauces are easily described as tangy and creamy buttery tasting. Alfredo sauce goes well with a creamy, cheesy, flavorful description, as it has lots of heavy cream and cheese in its white sauce.

Depending on taste, it may be tricky to describe sauces since people’s taste definitions vary. Using ingredient descriptions is a safer way to navigate it as it is logical and ideal.

Words to Describe Cheese

Everyone adores stringy cheese on pizza, right?

Cheese is the one thing that can elevate your pizza’s taste and presentation, but describing cheese might not be an easy task.

The two most essential aspects you can describe cheese besides its flavor are meltability and stretchiness. meltability is the ability of the cheese to melt over the pizza, while stretchiness is the ability of the cheese to stretch when pulled. Also known as the “cheese pull.”

When describing cheese, consider its appearance, smell, and, most importantly, flavor.

Words to Describe Pizza Texture

Textural variations in pizzas  are first perceived on touch and later in the mouth.

Elasticity is measured by applying vertical pressure on the pizza by hand. A hard, firm, rigid, supple, rubbery textured pizza is resistant to deformation and does not spring back.

A stiff/brittle textured pizza is difficult to tear into two. Delicate, soft, and moist textured pizzas are resistant to tear along the middle upon folding a slice with toppings.

Easy-to-chew pizzas are melt-in-the-mouth, creamy soft, rubbery, airy, brioche-like, and firm. Pizzas with a crumble feel upon chewing are best termed gritty, crumbly, friable, and have an over-filling texture.

Sticky pizza is best described as dry, doughy, spongy, or soupy. A very greasy slice is called fatty, greasy, or oily, while not enough butter is termed dry or with a cardboard texture.

An Essay on My Favorite Food Pizza [PDF]

Yummy! Is not it? Today I’ll show you the example of an essay on Pizza.

pizza essay feature image

Pizza is an Italian dish with a round in shape made with a base of wheat dough on which, the toppings of tomato, onion, capsicum, corn, cheese, and chicken is put with contents of spices then baked in the oven at high-temperature and lastly served with chili flakes and oregano or seasonings.

It has a soft crust after it is baked with cheese and has mouth-watering taste savoring your tongue with spongy and different toppings on it. Pizzas are the best to have for lunch or dinner. It is easily available at affordable rates in many of the restaurants and cafes too.

The Italian dish, Pizza became my favorite when for the first time I had a margarita cheese pizza with extra cheese on it. It was a medium-sized pizza with servings for six people each or three people if they ate in pairs. The Pizza was hot and spongy to touch.

Its top layer was swollen and round shaped. I sprinkled chili flakes and oregano for great taste, and after this when I took a slice of pizza, the cheese was melting and gave yummy taste my tongue. With packed Pizza, inside it also had sachets of tomato sauce that I also tried on another slice of Pizza that I took.

Pizza is an easy dish to make at homes too. I had seen many videos on YouTube telling different ways to make Pizza, in which they had toppings of vegetables and corn too. People who are not having oven for baking, use a pressure cooker or a pan for baking their Pizza using various seasonings.

It could be easily ordered in any size like large for a group of friends or family, medium-sized for a small group and small-sized for an individual. They are made either in fresh pan or hand-tossed, whichever way we want we can have it.

There are up to more than 15 varieties of Pizza’s made to serve. There are three variations of Pizza that are Stromboli, panzerotti, and calzone.

Dominos and Pizza hut are the two main largest selling pizza restaurants with multiple varieties for vegetarians and non-vegetarians too. They are available in pizza mania with four slices. Side beverages are also available that could be ordered with pizza-like garlic bread, cold drinks or chocolate brownie.

Portions of pasta are also available in both the restaurants. However, they both have variations in price range’s as in Dominos you could get Pizza at reasonable rates but Pizza Hut might be a little bit costly for you to have your favorite Pizza or try new ones.

In today’s time being in every city, we have both these restaurants in every city or every area. With the commencement of these restaurants, they were not having online orderings before but with the advancement of technology they had made available online orderings and delivery services at your doorstep in just 30 minutes.

Not only these both restaurants but also various other restaurants are also opened servings different varieties of Pizza at affordable rates or sometimes high rates too.

Since Pizza is one of my favorite dishes that I love to eat so I must also keep in mind the contents and other fats present in it to prevent myself from harming my body as it could also lead to negative health effects causing digestive tract cancer or cardiovascular problems.

However, lycopene content is present in Pizza that provides a shield or protection from both these critical issues.

Pizzas are made with mouth-savoring taste and soft crush but could cause harm to your health if consumed excessively. Eating Pizza every day could damage your internal organs’ liver or could cause you digestive problems like stomach pain too.

It could create serious health problems and easily to children it could deteriorate their health, and to women, it could cause pregnancy issues creating too many hectic problems regarding their health status.

Pizza contains a high quantity of calories, and so it could cause severe damage to your body. So, a person should consume a pizza once or twice a month, only to remain healthy. It would save him or her from a high amount of fat and salt ingredient present in it.

words to describe pizza-Best slice of pizza you’ve ever had.

' data-src=

For upon |The greatest slice of pizza I have ever had was some kind of modern and urban place in New York. If I remembered the name of it Ib would recommend it immediately. I ordered a slice of Pepperoni. Words to describe pizza now, I want you to close your eyes and imagine this. The crust is cooked to perfection and the thickness of the crust is not thin but not super thick either. Just right in the middle.

On top of that is some incredible tomato sauce. It was so flavorful I could name some of the ingredients. There was basil, olive oil, and this magnificent garlic inside the Italian goodness.

On top of that is the cheese. It was so good and I don’t even like cheese smooch but this was different. The chef told us they get the cheese imported straight for Italy. Then the best part… The Pepperoni! this pepperoni is way thicker than normal and it was also straight from Italy. In New York if you come by a Modern Pizza Place, chances are you could have the best slice of pizza you have ever eaten.

The article was originally published  here .

The modern pizza was originally invented in Naples, Italy but the word pizza is Greek in origin, derived from the Greek word pēktos meaning solid or clotted . The ancient Greeks covered their bread with oils, herbs and cheese. The first major innovation that led to flat bread pizza was the use of tomato as a topping. It was common for the poor of the area around Naples to add tomato to their yeast-based flat bread, and so the pizza began.

While it is difficult to say for sure who invented the pizza, it is however believed that modern pizza was first made by baker Raffaele Esposito of Naples. In fact, a popular urban legend holds that the archetypal pizza, Pizza Margherita, was invented in 1889, when the Royal Palace of Capodimonte commissioned the Neapolitan pizzaiolo Raffaele Esposito to create a pizza in honor of the visiting Queen Margherita.

Of the three different pizzas he created, the Queen strongly preferred a pie swathed in the colors of the Italian flag: red (tomato), green (basil), and white (mozzarella). Supposedly, this kind of pizza was then named after the Queen as Pizza Margherita.

Later, the dish has become popular in many parts of the world:

  • The first pizzeria, Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba , was opened in 1830 in Naples.
  • In North America, The first pizzeria was opened in 1905 by Gennaro Lombardi at 53 1/3 Spring Street in New York City.
  • The first Pizza Hut , the chain of pizza restaurants appeared in the United States during the 1930s.

Nowadays, many varieties of pizza exist worldwide, along with several dish variants based upon pizza.

Think of your favorite…let’s go with…food. Yes, food.

Describe what it tastes like, but don’t stop there.

Cover as many senses as you can: the physical feel of it; the smell; what it looks like; if it’s crunchy, describe that sound; and taste, of course.

Think of if you’ve ever felt like you were starving to death, then you bit into your favorite food. You probably closed your eyes and savored every moment of it. Describe what you felt.

———————————————-

My favorite food is pepperoni pizza. When I smell a saucy, cheesy, spicy pizza baking in the oven, I can hardly wait to get my hands under a soft, warm slice. I cannot bear not sinking my teeth into the gooey, doughy thick crust pizza, cannot stand to have the round, red little pepperonis taunting me.

I remember one time going from 11:00 until 7:00 without eating even a snack. As soon as that heavenly pizza came out of the oven, I nearly burned my fingers as I escorted the biggest slice to my plate, blanketing it in a snow of Parmesan cheese.

At the first hot, steamy bite, I grinned ear-to-ear. That one little slice of pizza was comforting to me…and my starving belly. I enjoyed every last bite, until I reached the crust, and then I started on another slice. It was the most amazing pizza I thought I had ever tasted.

———————————-

Grr…now I want pizza.

Make my mouth water!

Peace! ~Tia

Words to Describe pizza

As you’ve probably noticed, adjectives for “ pizza ” are listed above. According to the algorithm that drives this website, the top 5 adjectives for “pizza” are also take-away, acceptable late-night, tremendous deluxe, least co-operative, and incongruous innocent. There are 191 other words to describe the pizza listed above. Hopefully the above-generated list of words to describe pizza suits your needs.

If you’re getting strange results, it may be that your query isn’t quite in the right format. The search box should be a simple word or phrase, like “tiger” or “blue eyes”. A search for words to describe “people who have blue eyes” will likely return zero results. So if you’re not getting ideal results, check that your search term, “ pizza ” isn’t confusing the engine in this manner.

Note also that if there aren’t many pizza adjectives, or if there are none at all, it could be that your search term has an ambiguous part of speech. For example, the word “blue” can be a noun and an adjective. This confuses the engine and so you might not get many adjectives describing it. I may look into fixing this in the future. You might also be wondering: What type of word is pizza ?

Describing Words

The idea for the Describing Words engine came when I was building the engine for Related Words (it’s like a thesaurus, but gives you a much broader set of related words, rather than just synonyms). While playing around with word vectors and the “ HasProperty ” API of conceptnet, I had a bit of fun trying to get the adjectives that commonly describe a word. Eventually I realized that there’s a much better way of doing this: parse books!

Project Gutenberg was the initial corpus, but the parser got greedier and greedier and I ended up feeding it somewhere around 100 gigabytes of text files – mostly fiction, including many contemporary works. The parser simply looks through each book and pulls out the various descriptions of nouns.

Hopefully, it’s more than just a novelty and some people will actually find it useful for their writing and brainstorming, but one neat little thing to try is to compare two nouns that are similar, but different in some significant way –

for example, gender is interesting: “woman” versus “man” and “boy” versus “girl”. On an initial quick analysis, it seems that authors of fiction are at least 4x more likely to describe women (as opposed to men) with beauty-related terms (regarding their weight, features, and general attractiveness). In fact, “beautiful” is possibly the most widely used adjective for women in all of the world’s literature, which is quite in line with the general unidimensional representation of women in many other media forms .

If anyone wants to do further research into this, let me know and I can give you a lot more data (for example, there are about 25000 different entries for “woman” – too many to show here).

The blueness of the results represents their relative frequency. You can hover over an item for a second and the frequency score should pop up. The “uniqueness” sorting is default, and thanks to my Complicated Algorithm™, it orders them by the adjectives’ uniqueness to that particular noun relative to other nouns (it’s actually pretty simple). As you’d expect, you can click the “Sort By Usage Frequency” button to adjectives by their usage frequency for that noun.

Special thanks to the contributors of the open-source MongoDB which was used in this project.

Word Origin for pizza

Pizza – quotes and descriptions to inspire creative writing.

The pizza base was an inch thick and as white as my unfinished term paper. The sauce tasted like it came out of a can, a cheap one, and the topping was generous but greasy. Overly thick slices of pepperoni sat in pools of grease from the cheese. The only colour came from the shards of red pepper on top, likely the only edible thing on the plate if you didn’t mind the oils on them too. One bite was enough, more than enough…words to describe pizza
The pizza was as big as the wheels on my truck. It was thin crust with feta cheese, olives and fresh tomatoes- a “Greek” I think they call it. The dough was wholewheat but you couldn’t really tell, certainly the kids couldn’t. They ate it just the same and asked for more.words to describe pizza
The pizza is one of those cheap ones mothers buy in bulk for quick meals, or at least mine does, maybe you’re better fed. It’s small, disappointingly so, perhaps four inches across. When I cut it from the clear plastic with my kid sister’s school scissors I take a closer look. There is barely any cheese at all, it’s a red disk of tomato puree with less cheddar than I’d put on a single cracker. The base is white of course, I’ll digest that in a few seconds and be hungry again. Time to make this sucker gourmet. I open the fridge feeling like Gordon Ramsay, inspired, but with a fair measure of inner rage to find no cheese, no meat, just some wrinkly mushrooms. Dammit, I hate being poor. I open another four and put them in the oven, looks like the best me and Stacey are getting tonight.words to describe pizza
Ryan poked at it with the fork. It looked like something from the nineteen seventies, too much dough, too much topping. It was less appetizing than the plate it was on. He took out his phone and sent it’s picture to all hi friends, it was about all it was good for- a few LOL’s and OMG’s. Not really worth twenty dollars but what could he do? His girlfriend worked there, refusing to pay would be a really bad move. Perhaps she’d made it herself.words to describe pizza
The pizza didn’t so much sit on the plate as fester on it. Around the edges there was orange grease and it was soggy to the touch. Kevin considered his options. Eat what his sister had made or make her upset. Then for sure he’d be making the dinner tomorrow night instead. There was nothing for it but a taste test, eyes closed, one bite, how hard could it be?words to describe pizza
The pizza was pizzeria perfect. How could it be anything else from Dad. He could make bread like no-one else and he used a pizza stone. There were even herbs in the dough. Like all his other home-baking it was mostly wholewheat, yet still so light. The sauce had chunks of tomato and the topping was three cheeses. There was nowhere in the world that sold pizza like this, and even if they did it wouldn’t be as good. words to describe pizza
There was nothing better than the pizza at Dario’s. The base was the perfect combination of light inside and crunchy on the bottom. The toppings were fresh and fragrant. It was the only place I could think of to take Jenny for our first date. Not so posh she felt intimidated and not so down-market she felt cheated. Everyone knows we live in the big house, but I can’t have her think I’m a snob or too expensive to date.words to describe pizza
The pizza had probably been just great yesterday when it was fresh. Now the crust was like cardboard and the cheese looked like fat gone hard. It was about as appealing as cold oatmeal.words to describe pizza
Homemade, wholegrain dough in bread machine, bag of homemade vegetable tomato sauce out of the freezer, tin of black pitted olives to slice, grate mozzarella cheese, roll dough on greased, floured tray, add toppings. Bake at 400 degrees celsius for 24 minutes, house fills with delicious aroma of a wintery Friday night, wholesome, made with love, sharing with family, soul-food.words to describe pizza The article was originally published  here . The Costco Pizza Topping You Can Find On The Food Court Menu

cheese pizza in Costco box

Denizens of the Costco food court are fanatical about the forever affordable hot dog meal deal , the unique chicken bake, and the gargantuan slices of pizza. That said, many are also fans of hacking the menu to create new and unusual items. For instance, the "Forbidden Glizzy" is a mashup of epic proportions that sees the famed quarter pound hot dog, sans bun, stuffed into the chicken bake. But that's not the only way to make use of the dog. If you can't decide whether to eat a slice of pizza or a hot dog, have the best of both worlds by adding the hot dog to the pizza as a topping.

Understand that no hacks will be honored by the employees of Costco's food court. Rather, these must be made at your table. Simply order a hot dog and a slice of cheese pizza — or pepperoni if you want to double up on the meat — and remove the dog from its bun before slicing it into rounds and topping the pizza. It's not perfect, as the hot dog wasn't baked into the cheese, but if you act while everything is still warm, the hot dog rounds should stay in place. For a next-level hot dog pizza experience, try adding a drizzle of yellow mustard and some chopped raw white onions, which, by the way, are free and great on the pizza solo .

There's more than one way to hack a hot dog-pizza

Costco hot dog sign

Given the culture of food hacks and the popularity of Costco and its food court, it should come as little surprise that the above method of creating a hot dog-pizza hybrid at the big box store isn't the only method. For those whose hacks trend more toward stunt food, the move is to buy a hot dog and a slice of pizza and wrap the warm slice around the naked hot dog. Mustard and onions are again optional. Is it a particularly attractive foodstuff? Not by traditional standards, but then again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The  Costco food court hacks  don't stop there, and the "Jochizza" is one of the more involved concoctions. This requires the purchase of a hot dog combo, a chicken bake, and a slice of pepperoni pizza. As with the "Forbidden Glizzy, the chicken bake is opened like a bun, and the hot dog is laid down the middle. Then, you carefully excise the cheese, sauce, and pepperoni from the pizza and layer it all over the hot dog. This may sound like a frontal assault of flavors and textures, and it is, but no one crafting a "Jochizza" is entering into the affair considering balance. It is decadence at its finest, and as your sodium levels spike, you may just wonder what other hacks there are to be had.

  • ‘Red Wedding’: Storied Stanford Creative Writing Program Laying Off Lecturers

The university says creative writing faculty recommended returning its Jones Lectureships to their “original intent” as short-term teaching appointments for talented writers. A lecturer of 20 years said he thinks there’s a “peasants and lords issue” in the program.

Stanford University is laying off its current Jones Lecturers.

Some Stanford University lecturers are likening it to the “red wedding” in Game of Thrones —a massacre of characters by their supposed allies amid what had been billed as a celebratory feast.

Last Wednesday, a dean, a senior associate dean and a co-director of Stanford’s storied and popular creative writing program held a Zoom meeting with the program’s 23 Jones Lecturers, according to some of those lecturers, who were chosen from the ranks of those who have held the university’s prestigious Stegner Fellowship for writers.

The university leaders complimented the Jones Lecturers over Zoom. “They praised us to the moon,” Tom Kealey, a lecturer for two decades, told Inside Higher Ed . “Endlessly” praised was how Edward Porter, a lecturer of eight years, put it.

Then, Kealey said, the leaders announced they would all be losing their jobs within the next two academic years. “The worst part is to be praised while you’re being fired,” Porter said. According to notes he took of the meeting, Nicholas Jenkins, the program’s co-director, said something to the effect of “you’re excellent, but others will be excellent in the future.”

There was an added sense of betrayal. The deans—Debra Satz, dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences, and Gabriella Safran, senior associate dean of humanities and arts—said this wasn’t their decision, according to Kealey. In Medium posts on the ordeal, he wrote that they said it came from “the senior professors of creative writing.”

“These are literally our teaching colleagues of the last five to 15 years,” Kealey wrote. “And they decided in a previous secret meeting to fire all 23 of their junior colleagues.” In another post, he wrote that “it was only the MALE professors who voted to fire us.” ( Inside Higher Ed reached out Tuesday to some of the male creative writing professors on Tuesday, but received no responses.)

In an unsigned announcement last Wednesday on the university’s website, Stanford said it is returning to the “original intent of the Jones Lectureships: one-year appointments with the possibility of renewal for a limited term.” That announcement said the recommendation came from faculty members on a “Working Group of Creative Writing Academic Council faculty,” but it didn’t name them.

Satz, Safran and Jenkins said in an emailed joint statement to Inside Higher Ed that "this change will again allow Stegner Fellows the opportunity to apply to be Jones Lecturers once they have completed their fellowships. Jones Lecturers will have one-year appointments with the possibility of renewal for up to four additional years."

While it’s no longer rare for non-tenure-track faculty members to be laid off by higher education institutions facing budget woes, Stanford is a wealthy institution and creative writing is, by its own admission, a popular program.

“We have a large number of fully enrolled classes, many with significant waitlists and some where the waitlists are longer than the enrollment roster,” Jenkins said in a February 2023 article on the university’s website. He also said, “We’re in a remarkable period of hiring during which we’re fortunate enough to be bringing to campus an extraordinarily talented array of significant artists and teachers.”

But the lecturers say they’re the ones teaching most of the creative writing classes for undergraduates, and that their years of experience improve teaching. Kealey said some lecturers teach five classes a year; others teach four. He wrote on Medium of the senior creative writing professors that “the 10 of them … taught 13 undergraduate classes last year (and 19 overall, less than two classes taught per professor).”

The leaders said during the Zoom meeting the decision wasn’t about money, according to Porter. “It’s maddening to have outstanding enrollment and be phased out anyway,” he said. While the university has said it wants to simply return the Jones Lectureships to the short stints they used to be, Kealey suggests the tenured professors in his department had other motives.

“I think there’s a peasants and lords issue here,” Kealey said.

A Long Time Coming?

In 1946, Wallace Stegner, who would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction for Angle of Repose , founded Stanford’s creative writing program. The Stegner Fellowships are named in his honor.

E. H. Jones, who had an oil fortune, funded the fellowships and also established the connected Jones Lectureships, according to the university’s announcement from last week. It said these were meant to be “limited, fixed-year teaching appointments, allowing exceptional Stegner Fellows some time and support to prepare a manuscript for publication, hone their teaching skills and transition to a longer-term teaching career elsewhere.”

But “over time this framework of term-limited appointments was not followed,” the university said. It did not say when that change occurred. It might have had something to do with Eavan Boland.

Boland, an Irish poet, led the creative writing program for 20 years until her sudden death in 2020. “Eavan was just a fierce defender of the program,” Kealey said. He said her death “was a great loss to all of us.”

When Boland joined the program, Kealey said, it had maybe 20 or 25 classes. But Boland wanted every student who so desired to be able to take a creative writing class. Kealey said lecturers went to residence halls in early years to speak with students about the program. Over about 15 years, Kealey said, the program grew to offer about 120 classes.

Porter said Boland “developed a large cadre of about 20 to 25 lecturers.” Even though they were on one-year contracts, Porter said, they kept getting renewed. He said it’s true that Boland did move the lectureships away from their original intent—but that it was beneficial for students, teaching and the program.

“There are a lot of human skills to playing this game, and those don’t come in a year,” Porter said. “We have letters, testimonials from students about how much we’ve meant to them. We’re also very available to them—we talk to them outside of class, there’s a sense of continuing mentorship if they want it.”

Now, Porter said, “there is at least the appearance” of the university creating “artificial scarcity,” suggesting there’s no room for the new, younger Stegner Fellows writers to get a leg up by becoming Jones Lecturers “because these crusty old folks are hogging up all the real estate.” Safran, the senior associate dean, said, per Porter’s meeting notes, that “in some years few or no Stegners were able to advance.”

Kealey said, “There’s no shortage of space for new Stegner Fellows to be hired into the Jones Lectureships, but, I don’t know, the professors wanted to do a scorched earth with this, and that’s what they’ve done.”

The lecturers said they pushed for, and received, raises from the university in September 2023. “Exactly a year later we’re all fired,” so “connect the dots here,” Kealey said. “I think the lords didn’t like that—didn’t like the peasants speaking up.”

Porter talked about “balancing one set of values against the other.” He said the tenured or tenure-track “creative writing faculty doesn’t teach many classes and many of them are not involved—they don’t care about the undergraduates. It’s not their job to care; it’s their job to write books, be famous and raise money, and that’s very necessary.”

And part of the purpose of the Jones Lectureship program is to give new writers a step up. But Porter worries about the other side of the equation being lost. “It’s our job to care about the undergrads,” he said.

Wondering Voyager

The Ultimate Guide to Nizhny Novgorod (and Beyond!)

Nizhny Novgorod… The city where I spent eight months of my life and never regretted a single day of it. My dear reader, if you are reading these lines, it is likely that you are planning a trip to this wonderful city yourself. Perhaps, you do not know where to start. I too was in your shoes so I would know. Maybe, you do not know where to start because you do not know much Russian. Maybe you do know some Russian but realize that there is not much written about the city even in that language. I know, I know… Let us fix this severe injustice to one gem of a city once and for all, right now. Below, you can find two things: a categorized list of all my articles to date on Nizhny Novgorod and beyond, collected here for a much easier access to them all; and a carefully curated “best of” list for the city for those who only plan to spend a few days in this wonderful place.

No more will the wonders of Nizhny Novgorod go unnoticed by the rest of the world!

(Ok, this may be going a tad too much…)

Best of Nizhny Novgorod

Alright, I can almost hear you say: “oh geez man, let me just stay in Nizhny for a few months to make sure that I experience everything you wrote.” I suppose you are right, not all will study in Nizhny, nor work there, some will just pass by and so on. If you do not have months to explore the city, but only a few days, perhaps just one, what then? Where to go and what to eat? Well, without much humility, I would strongly recommend you visit the following spots first and eat at these fine establishments before anywhere else. These are the must haves of Nizhny, according to yours truly!

DO AND SEE!

  • See the city’s Kremlin with your own eyes, and maybe visit the State Russian Art Museum there if you have the time.
  • Go to the lower side to gawk at the Cathedral of Aleksander Nevsky and all the goodies it holds.
  • Spend some time in the gorgeous Switzerland Park and watch a sunset there, or perhaps travel to the stars at Planetarium 1.
  • Appreciate the unique ornaments of the State Bank on the main pedestrian street, Bol’shaya Pokrovskaya.
  • Walk down Chkalov’s Stairs and then walk along the Volga until you visit the beautiful Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

EAT AND DRINK!

  • Savour the finest ramen this city (and perhaps the entire Federation) has to offer at Fukuramen.
  • Eat some decent pizza at either Yula or Pech, depending on which bank of the Oka you are exploring at the time.
  • Enjoy the company and service of the finest people in town by grabbing a mug of beer in Freakadely.
  • Go to Öö if you want to taste the best cocktails in town instead, in an almost hidden basement no less!
  • Head to Gellert for the best beer in town as well as some quick and rather affordable grubs.
  • Have some Cinnabon rolls at Cinnabon alongside with a hot drink of your choice to survive the Russian winter.
  • Try a business lunch at Skoba, with their own unique takes on many modern dishes.

Well, there you go. Almost a year spent in an unassuming “little” Russian city, one that surprised me at every turn, and one that made me say “thank you” to my former self for choosing to come here just a few months earlier. It was an amazing stay to say the least, and I did not even explore the outlying areas of the city, so, in all honesty, this guide can be expanded sometime in the future quite easily. I cannot say for sure whether I will be back to Nizhny at any point, but if I do, I know that I will be happy to do so. It feels quite weird to be able to put months of my experience into such a short guide, but if this will help anyone out there who is willing to come and enjoy this city, then I guess it will be doing its job just right. I wish you all good luck and best of times!

Legendary nyc artist patti smith among those fighting to save public garden she describes as creative refuge.

Patti Smith

A public garden that’s set to be demolished has played a part in creative life of one of New York City’s greatest living artists, she tells us.

Patti Smith is one of several bold-face names campaigning to save the Elizabeth Street Gardens in Little Italy.

And the musician, author and poet tells Page Six that the spot — which is set to be destroyed to make way for affordable housing for the elderly — has been a creative refuge for her, as well as thousands of others city dwellers.

Elizabeth Street Garden

She even said that she’s worked on a new book about her life while sitting in the Downtown oasis.

“I’ve written poems there. I like to sit and think. It’s a good place just to think and contemplate,” the author of books including “Just Kids” and “M Train” told us, adding, “I’m working on a book. It’s a work in progress and when I was in the garden I was writing about my mother.”

“When we do performances there, it’s not like raucous atmosphere — it’s a very light-hearted, benevolent atmosphere were people are listening,” Smith said, “Sometimes I’ve improvised poetry with my daughter in the garden. It’s inspiring. But it’s also calming. Sometimes I might want to go to the garden not to work, but to exist — just to feel blessed by my surroundings.”

Robert De Niro and Martin Scorcese have also lent their weight to the cause. Along with Smith, the three cultural icons have penned letters to Mayor Eric Adams , asking him to step in to save the garden.

The site was first developed as a garden by Allan Reiver in the early 1990s. A developer now plans to build affordable housing on the space. Demolition is due to begin in a matter of weeks, and the garden could be closed as soon as September 10.

Patti Smith

“I’ve lived in the city off-and-on for over half a century, and these type of areas are fast diminishing,” she said. “And they’re worth fighting for.”

Her daughter, Jesse Paris Smith, is working nearly full-time on the campaign to save the garden.

“It’s more than a garden,” Patti said, “It’s really like a work of art. It’s like an art installation merging sculpture and nature and community — all three things in one place.”

Patti Smith

The “Gloria” singer acknowledged that affordable housing for the elderly is, of course, important, and she noted that at 77 years old, she’s naturally sensitive to the needs of older citizens.

But she said that the city is full of empty office and retail space, and that its seems likely that a beloved garden isn’t the only viable spot for the new homes.

“And it must be said that many of the people who are concerned about losing the garden are the elderly,” Patti said, “There are many elderly people who have said they’d forfeit the right to live in any new housing, if we would only save the garden.”

Skye Writing

Simeon Seigel sets a course for puzzling adventure.

A rainbow is seen over the grassy, seaside Isle of Skye.

By Deb Amlen

Jump to: Today’s Theme | Tricky Clues

THURSDAY PUZZLE — Hand up if you are the type of person who jumps eagerly into assembling a new piece of furniture or an appliance without first reading the instruction manual. There’s no judgment here; we’ve all done it. It’s just a dishwasher, you tell yourself. How hard could it be to install?

One dishwasher load later, with a lake of soap bubbles rising in the kitchen around your ankles, you realize that you probably should have done what Simeon Seigel is asking us to do in his crossword. To paraphrase the poet Robert Frost, it probably would have made all the difference.

Today’s Theme

Got your compass handy? We are going to discover directional signs in this puzzle, and if we know what’s good for us, we’d better FOLLOW DIRECTIONS, which is the revealer at 40A.

Mr. Seigel meant that literally. We need to identify the directional rebuses in the four circled squares and then follow them to understand the entire answer.

For example, the clue for 22A, [Musical interval like C to E flat], is only three letters long, which doesn’t seem like enough space for the entire entry. There is a circled square at the end, however, and the clue for the crossing entry at 8D contains only a hyphen. That usually means that the entry is a continuation of another one.
