INFORMATION FOR

  • Residents & Fellows
  • Researchers

Below are admissions and training requirements specific to BBS students.

Current BBS Students

You may apply to SOM, but you must complete the application process no later than January of your first year of study at the Graduate School. Upon receiving an offer of admission to SOM, you are required to submit a proposal of study outlining your academic plan and schedule for completing both the MBA and Ph.D. degrees. Please first meet with your DGS, the Dean of Students at SOM, and the Associate Dean for Graduate Academic Support in the Graduate School prior to crafting this plan of study. If necessary, these parties may meet together with you. Admission to the joint degree program is contingent upon approval of this proposal by the DGS and respective deans of the Graduate School and SOM. Excellent performance in graduate classes and laboratory rotations in the fall semester is also required.

The BBS program requires you to select a thesis lab and departmental affiliation at the end of your first year of graduate study. If you wish to enroll in the joint degree program you must alert your anticipated Ph.D. program DGS and thesis adviser of your plans prior to selecting a thesis laboratory and Ph.D. program affiliation.

Prospective BBS Students

If you have not yet applied to Yale, you must apply simultaneously to BBS (through the Graduate School) and to SOM. Applications to SOM should be submitted for consideration during the first or second round of admissions ( see the SOM website for deadlines ). Admissions decisions for each school are made on an entirely separate basis by the respective admissions committees, and each school will notify you of its decision. You will be enrolled for the joint degree program only if you receive admission to both programs. You will then submit a plan of study as described above.

Academic Schedule

You must complete the core curriculum at SOM in the course of one academic year. During this year you will not be registered at the Graduate School. You must complete the core SOM curriculum prior to beginning graduate study or immediately after completing your first year in the BBS program.

After completing the year-long core curriculum at SOM, you then must take four non-core courses at SOM. You may complete these course requirements in one of two ways:

  • Register for a full term at SOM. If you choose this option you would normally do so only after completing all of the requirements for the Ph.D.
  • Take one course per semester while remaining registered in the Graduate School and working toward the Ph.D. If you choose this option you should take no more than one SOM course per semester.

You are required to register in and pay tuition to SOM for a total of 3 semesters. While registered in SOM, you will not receive a BBS stipend, will not receive graduate student health coverage, and will be required to pay tuition to SOM. You may not opt for the third semester of full-time study at SOM during your first 3 years in the BBS Program due to funding constraints related to training grants. If you choose to register full-time at SOM after the third year, you will pay the semester of tuition to SOM at that time. You are not able to register simultaneously in the Graduate School during this semester and would thus not be eligible to receive a graduate stipend or graduate student health coverage.

It is not possible to pay SOM tuition on a per-course basis. As a result, if you fulfill the SOM elective course work over four semesters, you will still be required to register at SOM for one full term so that tuition for all four courses may be paid. Normally, you would choose your final term at Yale to register in SOM.

The growing potential to make life-saving discoveries in an ever-changing global economy make this an exciting time to enhance your biomedical science PhD with an MBA! Many ambitious students are now looking to an MBA as a useful enhancement to their biomedical research experience and expand their career options.

An MBA is an investment in the future careers of biomedical graduate students. We know our alums will be future college presidents, department chairs, entrepreneurs, government officials, patent holders and CEOs of biomedical companies. This program will ensure they leave us not only as cutting-edge scientists, but also prepared for the leadership challenges they will face regardless of what lies ahead.

Regardless of career trajectory, PhDs can benefit from pursuing a business education. From a practical standpoint, the managerial skills, business acumen and financial literacy one develops from an MBA program are useful for managing labs, staff, grants or even starting a business. The biomedical industry and higher education are increasingly influenced by legal issues and shifting healthcare policy, both of which are covered by the MBA curriculum. Students will expand their networks by taking classes alongside CEO’s and business leaders enrolled in the Executive MBA program.

The immediate financial advantages of a PhD / MBA option at UM are substantial. Not only will accepted students receive 100% tuition waivers for the doctoral portion of their studies, they will receive shared credit savings and a 50% scholarship from the School of Business Administration for their MBA. In the long-term, students with MBA’s can expect to have greater earnings over the lifetime of their careers.

Ms/mba program, ms/mba biotechnology: life sciences, a joint degree that blends business, ethics, and life science.

Harvard’s dual degree program, MS/MBA Biotechnology: Life Sciences , aims to prepare the next generation of industry leaders with advanced training in business, ethics, and life sciences. Built in response to student demand, this novel approach to a Harvard MBA is for people with both an undergraduate degree in the life sciences and at least two years of work experience.

This intensive, two-year dual degree program will offer MS courses developed and taught by  HSCRB faculty . The degrees are jointly offered by Harvard Business School (HBS) and the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS).

In the program, students will follow a core curriculum that focuses on business and includes courses in science and ethics. Intensive courses over the summer and in January, plus a broad range of electives in the second year, will ensure students can fulfil both business and science degree requirements.

“We want to provide leadership for the whole scientific and medical enterprise: biotechnology, pharma, venture capital, NGOs, and government. Our future leaders need to feel that the ethical component of what they’re doing is as important as the financial, so that medical needs worldwide can be addressed in an equitable way.” -Mark Fishman, M.D., Professor of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology and faculty co-chair of the program
“Our department has built into it a strong entrepreneurial spirit, with many biotech companies developed by our faculty. Our scientists don’t just ask and answer questions about how nature works, but further ask how do you make use of that information and commercialize it to help people. This dual degree expands on that, allowing us to train exceptional, ethical leaders in industry – or even in policy – who really understand the science and can be nimble in their decision making.” -Doug Melton, Ph.D., Xander University Professor, co-founder of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, and faculty co-chair of the program
“The idea is to collaborate with the best and brightest minds across Harvard who believe that it is within our scientific and economic grasp to reduce human suffering.  Students will have access to faculty members from HBS, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and Harvard Medical School, who will be present in the classroom at the same time. The program will give them both an MBA and an amazing science education that allows them to lead the next generation of life-sciences companies.” -Amitabh Chandra, Ph.D., Ethel Zimmerman Wiener Professor of Public Policy at HKS, Henry and Allison McCance Professor of Business Administration at HBS, and faculty co-chair of the program
“I am so excited about the launch of this program. It is much needed – we aim to train the future leaders of biotech and pharma, providing them with business skills, scientific critical thinking, and an ethical framework. It’s also exciting for us to interact with a new type of student in HSCRB, expanding our educational community to include undergraduates, science graduate students, medical students, and now business students. It is a real pleasure to work with our colleagues at HBS. I cannot wait to meet our first cohort.” -Bill Anderson, Director of Education in HSCRB and program director for the degree program

PhD/MBA Program

The Wake Forest University PhD/MBA program is dedicated to training and research at the interface between science andbusiness to unleash the power and potential of technology for the benefit of society.

A large proportion of Ph.D. graduates work in the private sector in positions that use the skills acquired during their graduate training. But in addition to the scholarship and rigor that makes the Ph.D. a world model, there is a need for a broader range of skills for success in a changing employment climate. The Wake Forest University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, in conjunction with the  Schools of Business , has initiated an innovative course of study leading to the PhD/MBA. The Wake Forest PhD/MBA program is the first program of its kind in the nation, and the first to produce students with the joint degree (see testimonials from some of our graduates, below).

The World Can Change at the Intersection of Disciplines

Uniting science and management, the PhD/MBA program is preparing a new generation of leaders for the emerging fields of technology. Our mission is focused, providing education and research training leading to beneficial uses for the rapidly emerging discoveries in the sciences, and preparing students for industry or academic leadership. Multidisciplinary knowledge is indispensable in the development of new products and processes and in the translation of biomedical advances to patients and the global market. As the first graduate program in the nation offering management training with the Ph.D., we are dedicated to capturing the brightest minds and providing them with the scientific and management expertise needed to foster the technology infrastructure of the nation.

An Innovative and Efficient Curriculum

The PhD/MBA program is a synthesis of curricula from the Graduate School and the Evening MBA Program of the Schools of Business, with specialized course work and opportunities for industrial and business internships. The joint program is open to new and current students in all PhD-granting programs across all Wake Forest campuses. Students take from 4-6 years to complete the joint program, depending on the nature of the graduate research undertaken in the home program. The first year of the curriculum will provide students with a core base of knowledge in the core competencies of the home graduate program. At the end of the second year, and before beginning MBA course work, the student must take and pass examinations that will admit him/her to candidacy for the PhD. A student enrolling in the PhD/MBA program would have 5-6 semesters of evening MBA courses added to the graduate degree requirements. Opportunities for industrial projects and internships are possible after ascent to PhD candidacy and during the MBA coursework phase. The PhD and MBA degrees will be awarded simultaneously at the completion of all requirements for both degrees.

Apply Online

Students wishing to enroll in the combined program apply to and meet the respective admissions requirements of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the Schools of Business. Admission to the MBA portion of the program occurs separately after gaining admission to the home graduate program, and after securing appropriate approval from the home program for participation in the joint program. In addition to the general requirements of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the  Schools of Business  requires completion of the GMAT (General Management Aptitude Test). The Schools of Business will also accept the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) as a replacement for the GMAT for admissions.

MBA vs PhD – Which advanced degree is better?

In the ever-evolving professional landscape, the pursuit of higher education remains a popular route to advance your career.

But with numerous options available, how do you choose between an MBA and a PhD?

In this blog post, we dive into the unique benefits and opportunities that each of these advanced degrees offers.

From the practical business acumen and leadership skills gained in an MBA program to the deep expertise and research contributions made by PhD holders, the choice ultimately hinges on your long-term goals and personal ambitions.

We’ll explore these two distinct paths, and learn how to make the best decision for your future success.

MBA VS PHD – the debate

A quick summary of a PhD vs MBA:

What Does a PhD Get You? Pros and Cons

A PhD, the highest academic degree achievable, can open numerous doors in the job market, enabling graduates to advance in their careers.

Unlike an MBA, which primarily focuses on corporate and management aspects, a PhD offers expertise in a specific field through rigorous research and study.

As a PhD student, your goal is to contribute new knowledge to your field, be it economics, finance, accounting, or any other discipline, by crafting a thesis that contains original research.

Through the PhD program, you not only earn a valuable qualification but also gain opportunities to publish your work and present at conferences.

These activities can enhance your reputation, making you more desirable to potential employers. The salary of a PhD holder often surpasses that of someone with only an undergraduate degree, as their expertise is in high demand.

From my personal experience, obtaining a PhD can be challenging yet rewarding. It allowed me to explore my chosen field, chemistry, in depth and opened up new avenues for career growth.

However, it is crucial to consider the potential drawbacks before embarking on this journey.

Pursuing a PhD entails a significant time commitment, typically around 3-4 years, and can be quite expensive, as tuition fees for these programs can be steep.

Acquiring a PhD can provide numerous benefits, including expert knowledge, a higher salary, and opportunities for advancement in your field. However, carefully weighing the pros and cons is necessary to determine if it’s the right path for you.

Should you earn an MBA instead for the business world?

Choosing between an MBA and a PhD is a crucial decision that depends on your career goals and personal preferences. While both are advanced degrees, they offer significantly different paths.

I asked an MBA graduate and this is what they said:

Having experienced the MBA program myself, I can vouch for its practical benefits. An MBA focuses on business acumen and managerial skills, enabling you to climb the corporate ladder more quickly than a PhD. With a two-year duration, it’s a faster route to increasing your earning potential and offers a significant return on investment. Business schools emphasize teamwork, entrepreneurship, and ethics, providing graduates with a well-rounded skill set for the business world.

On the other hand, a PhD, such as a PhD in economics or any other discipline, is ideal for those passionate about research and academia. It requires several years of dedicated study, with graduates becoming experts in their niche.

PhD holders often pursue careers as researchers, professors, or consultants.

When considering whether to pursue an MBA or a PhD, weigh the pros and cons of each degree and reflect on your long-term career aspirations. Both options can be rewarding, but they cater to different ambitions and provide distinct opportunities in the professional world.

Is an MBA equal to a PhD and doctorate?

An MBA and a PhD are both advanced degrees, but they are not equal due to their differing purposes and career outcomes.

As someone who has interacted with both MBA and PhD graduates, I’ve seen firsthand the unique benefits of each degree.

An MBA is a professional degree, taking one to two years to complete, and equips students with practical business skills.

This degree is popular among those aiming to climb the corporate ladder in industries like finance, marketing, or consulting.

On the other hand, a PhD is a research-focused degree, requiring several years of dedication and original research contributions.

A PhD in economics or other fields often leads to careers in academia or research. PhD programs are highly competitive and demand an intense commitment to writing a dissertation and advancing knowledge in the discipline.

The debate between MBA vs. PhD highlights the significant differences in their focus and career paths.

While both degrees can be obtained at a business school, they cater to different ambitions and provide distinct opportunities. The choice between an MBA or a PhD depends on one’s end goal, work experience, and personal preferences.

So What’s Better, a PhD or MBA?

When considering whether to pursue a PhD or an MBA, it’s essential to evaluate your:

  • personal interests,
  • career goals,
  • financial commitment involved in each degree.

A PhD offers the opportunity to deeply explore a specific subject, contribute to the advancement of knowledge in that field, and establish yourself as an expert.

However, the process is often lengthy and demanding, taking up to five or six years of intense research and dedication.

The payoff might not always be immediate in terms of career prospects, as academia and research can be fiercely competitive arenas.

On the other hand, an MBA equips you with practical business skills and knowledge, often leading to a broader range of job opportunities and potentially higher salaries.

The program’s duration is considerably shorter, usually taking one to two years to complete, and offers a faster return on investment.

An MBA is particularly well-suited for those seeking to climb the corporate ladder, transition into a managerial role, or even launch their own startups.

It’s important to note that some individuals choose to pursue both degrees, combining their research expertise with practical business acumen to excel in various fields.

Does anyone earn both a PhD and an MBA? Why?

Yes, there are indeed individuals who choose to earn both a PhD and an MBA, although this path is less common.

Combining the two degrees can create a unique skill set that is valuable in various fields.

For instance, a PhD holder in a specialized discipline may opt for an MBA to gain practical business skills and a broader understanding of the corporate world, which can be valuable in leadership roles or entrepreneurial endeavors.

Pursuing both degrees also allows for building diverse networks, connecting with professionals in academia and the business world.

Despite the significant time and effort required to obtain both degrees, those who undertake this ambitious path often find themselves well-equipped to navigate multiple career paths and excel in their chosen fields.

MBA vs PhD Career Options

Both advanced degrees can lead to successful careers, but they differ significantly in terms of their focus and job prospects.

An MBA degree, with its emphasis on business administration, prepares graduates for roles such as:

  • management consultant,
  • marketing manager, or
  • finance director.

MBA holders are more likely to climb the corporate ladder quickly and enjoy higher salaries. The MBA program equips students with practical business skills, making them suitable for leadership positions in a wide range of industries.

In contrast, PhDs are more likely to become professors or researchers, with a focus on deepening their expertise in their chosen field. In science that is a very common career goal.

While the earning potential for PhD holders may not be as high as for those with an MBA, they often find fulfillment in their academic pursuits.

Getting an MBA might be the better option for those eager to advance quickly in the corporate world and who possess a strong passion for business.

On the other hand, getting a PhD might be more suitable for those who wish to delve into research and contribute to academia.

Wrapping Up

The decision between pursuing an MBA or a PhD is a highly personal one, hinging on individual career goals, personal interests, and the level of time and financial commitment one is willing to make. Both advanced degrees offer unique benefits and opportunities, but they cater to different career paths and ambitions.

An MBA is an ideal choice for those seeking to climb the corporate ladder swiftly, transition into management roles, or launch their own businesses. With a focus on practical business skills, MBA graduates find themselves well-prepared for leadership positions across various industries.

On the other hand, a PhD is geared towards those passionate about research and academia, providing an opportunity to become an expert in a specific field and contribute to the advancement of knowledge. While the journey may be more demanding and time-consuming, the satisfaction of making an impact in one’s chosen discipline can be deeply rewarding.

The best choice depends on your long-term goals, professional aspirations, and personal preferences. Reflecting on these factors, researching each degree thoroughly, and seeking advice from professionals and peers can help you make an informed decision that aligns with your ambitions and aspirations. Whichever path you choose, both an MBA and a PhD can be instrumental in unlocking a world of possibilities and shaping your future career.

This joint program will lead to an M.S. in Biology (GSAS) and M.B.A. ( Stern School of Business ). This program meets a need for academic preparation and training of Scientist-Managers and Research Directors for the biotechnology and pharmacology industry, academic Industrial Liaison personnel, Investment Specialists for the financial sector, and Government Regulatory personnel.

Students will earn 30 credits in GSAS-Biology and complete a Qualifying Thesis as well as 54 credits at the Stern School of Business. This will be a full-time program, with students enrolled for the first year and summer at GSAS and the second and third years at Stern.

The GRE exam is required for the application process. Also accepted in lieu of the GRE are GMAT, LSAT, DAT, MCAT scores. Each program's prerequisites remain; for instance Stern considers business experience essential and Biology requires the pre-medical core curriculum to matriculate in graduate level courses. Admissions are made by each school's admissions committee and students must be admitted to both programs to qualify for the joint degree.

For the M.S. in Biology portion of the program, students typically take BioCore I and II (BIOL-GA.1001 and 1002), and biology electives related to health and medicine such as Metabolic Disorders (BIOL-GA.1032), Emerging Pathogens (BIOL-GA.1080), Hot Topics in Infectious Disease (BIOL-GA.1023), and Toxicology (BIOL-GA.1006). When applying, it's important tailor your application to each school and have well-developed goal statement that plots the intended career path, experts say.

Nikita Srivastava applied to seven MBA programs and got admitted to three: Yale University School of Management in Connecticut, New York University's Stern School of Business and the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business in Illinois.

“I definitely was not expecting it,” says Srivastava, who chose Booth.

She attributes her multiple acceptances to top B-schools to tying her personal and professional backgrounds to her post-MBA goals. Her background was mainly in communications, media relations and public relations, and she credits her MBA admissions consultant for showing her how to tell her story.

“Lean into what makes you unique," Srivastava advises MBA applicants .  " Think about how this unique quality will enhance the classroom for your peers and professors. Be proud of it and own it.”

Being accepted into multiple B-schools can allow an applicant to weigh program fit, potential opportunities and scholarship offers. Here are some things to consider to increase your chances of being accepted to multiple top business schools .

Apply More Broadly

Getting admitted to numerous MBA programs is a numbers game, says Sam Weeks, an MBA admissions consultant and founder of Sam Weeks Consulting.

“The more business schools a prospective applicant applies to, the more likely they are to be accepted into more than one school. That’s why we recommend to our clients to apply to at least six schools, if possible,” says Weeks, who has an MBA from the University of Oxford in England.

Students should not only apply to more schools to increase their chances of multiple admissions, but also more broadly in terms of school selectivity, experts say.

“This sounds obvious, but there are many applicants who go into this process only considering a limited set of schools with slimmer acceptance odds. They say the ROI is not there for other schools outside their ambitious targeting,” says Alex Leventhal, an MBA admissions consultant at Prep MBA Admissions Consulting.

Leventhal, who has an MBA from Harvard University Business School in Massachusetts, contends that the return on investment is compelling at more schools than most people think. He says applicants should look at the salary data of program graduates and the percentage of graduates who got jobs within three months after graduation.

“For example, the very top consulting firms recruit at a range of schools, and not just the top three,” Leventhal says.

He also suggests looking for joint degree programs to increase your odds by applying to a specialty track that a school is promoting or trying to fill.

Leventhal said he has had "some less-than-stellar clients" get accepted to the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School , likely because they applied to the Lauder Institute of Management and International Studies joint program "for one of their less popular regional tracks. Or a client who got into Stanford Graduate School of Business because their professional experiences fit so nicely with a limited scholarship program focusing on the sustainable food supply chain.”

Customize Each Application

Schools like to see B-school applicants demonstrate familiarity with their programs, experts say. Leventhal says schools will “look for evidence that you have engaged with their program and talked to current students and alumni.”

Applicants should demonstrate they took the time to research a particular school “and all it has to offer, and consider both what they will learn from the program and how they will add value on campus,” says MBA consultant Scott Edinburgh, founder of Personal MBA Coach.

This means taking time to develop a strong personal story that connects past choices with future goals, says Edinburgh, who has an MBA from Wharton.

Applicants should demonstrate four key things in their tailored applications, he says: “Ability to handle the academic rigor of the target MBA program, leadership potential, how they will uniquely add value on campus and clarity of purpose.”

When applying, Weeks says, it’s important to have a well-developed goal statement that “charts out the applicant's intended career path and the impact they expect to have in their career.” He says those goals should be ambitious but attainable and make sense for the applicant.

Knowing what makes top business schools distinct "and then showing how you fit into those unique scenarios is essential to securing admits,” says Candy Lee LaBalle, an MBA admissions expert and founder of mbaClarity, formerly LaBalle Admissions.

Highlight Extracurricular Activities

Professional accomplishments that demonstrate leadership are great but shouldn’t be the only things highlighted. Edinburgh says applicants should show a passion for driving change.

“Successful MBA applicants are interesting people with plans to leave the world better than they found it in unique ways. Demonstrating passion and a track record of success in working towards this passion goes a long way,” Edinburgh says.

LaBalle says applicants who get admitted to multiple top B-schools tend to be “genuinely curious about the world, about learning, about having their perspectives challenged, and that shows in their hobbies and interests, work and goals.” They care deeply about the world and can demonstrate it, she adds, “whether that is mentoring classmates or starting an NGO that feeds thousands, and everything in between.”

Boost Your GMAT or GRE Score

If your GMAT or GRE score is lower than you had hoped for, take some more time to study and retake the exam.

“It is easier to get admits, and thus multiple admits, if your test score is strong and balanced between quantitative and verbal,” LaBalle says.

She says a strong, above-average test score can make a difference. “While there are many ways to offset a lowish test, the hard truth is that the higher your score, the better your odds of multiple admits.”

Students who don’t do well in the quantitative or analytical parts of the GMAT may prefer to take the GRE. Some business schools accept either test for MBA admissions.

Tests and other application materials aside, experts say securing strong letters of recommendation by supporters invested in your career and future is important to getting accepted to top MBA programs.

Apply to Schools Offering Scholarships

Applying to more schools can mean more scholarships that come with those admissions, which can give you options. Leventhal says his clients have focused on applying to more B-schools the last few cycles because they are increasingly interested in merit scholarships.

“The schools are trying to secure talented applicants with money off the tuition. As the price tag of the MBA has gone up, the merit pull can understandably matter. And schools that are reaches for an applicant generally won’t offer much in the way of merit grants,” Leventhal says.

Srivastava says she received some scholarships with each admissions offer, helping to relieve the burden of paying back student loans after graduation and giving her “freedom to focus on finding a career that would be a good fit for me both personally and professionally.”

A major bonus to getting accepted to multiple B-schools that offer scholarships is leverage, Weeks says. “You are in a strong position to negotiate scholarships.”

That includes awards at the most elite business schools. Students with more than one acceptance can inform schools that they received another offer and ask if any additional scholarship funding is available, he says.

Southern Miss MBA Program jumps in Fortune Education Ranking

Fri, 05/17/2024 - 12:00pm | By: Courtney Robinson

The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Master of Business Administration program (MBA) program has been ranked No. 31 nationally in the Best Online MBA programs for 2024 by Fortune Education. The current ranking represents a gain of 17 spots from its 2023 rankings.

Housed in the College of Business and Economic Development the program has restructured its curriculum in the last academic year by removing prerequisites barriers and allowing students more flexibility in their elective course selection.

Noted Dr. Bret Becton, Dean of the College of Business and Economic Development, “As the Dean of the College of Business & Economic Development, I am thrilled by our recognition as the No. 31 Best Online MBA Program by Fortune Education.”

Fortune Education ranks programs based on several factors, including price, student backgrounds, and alumni outcome. Other data factored into the decision include graduation rates, retention rates, yield rates, and average undergraduate GPA.

Dr. Steven Stelk, MBA Director, added, “ Fortune’s recognition of our MBA program is gratifying. The College of Business and Economic Development faculty and staff have continued to invest in and refine the online MBA program since it was established in 2014.”

Becton added, “ This achievement stands as a testament to the dedication and expertise of our MBA faculty and staff, whose tireless efforts have played an integral role in shaping our program into one that empowers future business leaders for success in today’s dynamic world.”

Stelk credits much of the improvement to the new curricular structure, which has attracted students with more diverse academic backgrounds.

“The recent rankings are based on the previous academic year, which gives us an opportunity to celebrate the results of our investments and provides fresh motivation to continue refining the program. We implemented novel curriculum changes in Fall 2023,” Stelk stated. “MBA students are now required to take fifteen hours of core business courses in accounting, finance, marketing, management, and strategy. They use the remaining 15 hours of focused electives to develop an area of expertise.”

Available focus areas include management, economic development, sport security management, supply chain/logistics, human capital development, instructional technology, public health, communications/public relations, non-profit studies, and public history. The MBA also now collaborates with the Sport Management MS and Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) programs to support dual programs.

“We are continuing to develop and test new ideas to increase the value of our MBA, and I am excited to see what the future holds,” Stelk said.

Students can complete the degree fully online or in-person at the Hattiesburg campus in as little as one year, full-time. Additional information can be found   online . For inquiries about the MBA program, please contact (601) 266-266-4659.

Students in our PhD programs are encouraged from day one to think of this experience as their first job in business academia—a training ground for a challenging and rewarding career generating rigorous, relevant research that influences practice.

Our doctoral students work with faculty and access resources throughout HBS and Harvard University. The PhD program curriculum requires coursework at HBS and other Harvard discipline departments, and with HBS and Harvard faculty on advisory committees. Faculty throughout Harvard guide the programs through their participation on advisory committees.

How do I know which program is right for me?

There are many paths, but we are one HBS. Our PhD students draw on diverse personal and professional backgrounds to pursue an ever-expanding range of research topics. Explore more here about each program’s requirements & curriculum, read student profiles for each discipline as well as student research , and placement information.

The PhD in Business Administration grounds students in the disciplinary theories and research methods that form the foundation of an academic career. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program has five areas of study: Accounting and Management , Management , Marketing , Strategy , and Technology and Operations Management . All areas of study involve roughly two years of coursework culminating in a field exam. The remaining years of the program are spent conducting independent research, working on co-authored publications, and writing the dissertation. Students join these programs from a wide range of backgrounds, from consulting to engineering. Many applicants possess liberal arts degrees, as there is not a requirement to possess a business degree before joining the program

The PhD in Business Economics provides students the opportunity to study in both Harvard’s world-class Economics Department and Harvard Business School. Throughout the program, coursework includes exploration of microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, probability and statistics, and econometrics. While some students join the Business Economics program directly from undergraduate or masters programs, others have worked in economic consulting firms or as research assistants at universities or intergovernmental organizations.

The PhD program in Health Policy (Management) is rooted in data-driven research on the managerial, operational, and strategic issues facing a wide range of organizations. Coursework includes the study of microeconomic theory, management, research methods, and statistics. The backgrounds of students in this program are quite varied, with some coming from public health or the healthcare industry, while others arrive at the program with a background in disciplinary research

The PhD program in Organizational Behavior offers two tracks: either a micro or macro approach. In the micro track, students focus on the study of interpersonal relationships within organizations and the effects that groups have on individuals. Students in the macro track use sociological methods to examine organizations, groups, and markets as a whole, including topics such as the influence of individuals on organizational change, or the relationship between social missions and financial objectives. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program includes core disciplinary training in sociology or psychology, as well as additional coursework in organizational behavior.

Martin Matzuk, MD, PhD, is a professor and the Stuart A. Wallace Chair of the Department of Pathology and Immunology at the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, USA. During the span of over 30 years at a single institution, he has made seminal contributions to various areas of reproductive biology research, including systematically deciphering the developmental roles of TGF-β growth factor family members (inhibins, activins, activin receptor-2, follistatin, GDF9, BMPs, and SMADs) in normal physiology and pathology of ovarian, testicular, and uterine functions. In the last decade, he developed a comprehensive drug development center at Baylor College of Medicine embarking on rapid target identification using DNA-encoded chemistry and in silico screening. In addition to continuing basic research, his team is now mostly focusing on the development of highly specific drugs for male contraception, endometriosis and ovarian cancer, and many other diseases.

Dr Matzuk received numerous honors and awards, including the Elected Member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Carl Hartman Award, the highest award conferred by the SSR, and, more recently, The Texas State Hill Prize. He trained numerous undergraduate, graduate, clinical, and postdoctoral fellows who have made distinguished careers in basic science and clinical medicine. Many of his former trainees and some of his collaborators met in person in April 2023 and felicitated his achievements in a day-long scientific symposium organized by the three of us (TRK, KHB, and WY) at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX ( Figure 1).
