COMPREHENSIVE GEOTECHNICAL SITE INVESTIGATION FOR A HIGH RISE BUILDING

The Geotechnical Site Investigation is the most crucial aspect to be conducted on the Proposed Fifteen Storey Hotel Building project at Quimpo Boulevard, Talomo, Davao City, Philippines. It is necessary to ensure the stability and the design of the foundation for the proposed structure. It covers the following major Item of Work: 1. In Situ Field Testing, which is the Standard Penetration Test (SPT) 2. Laboratory Tests of the Soil Sample 3. Calculation 4. Analysis 5. Geotechnical Evaluation of the Project Site. In this study, the following are calculated: allowable soil bearing capacity for a shallow foundation, allowable pile capacity for a deep pile foundation, liquefaction assessment, and other engineering properties of soil using SPT Correlation Formulas. The discussion and evaluation will include a recommendation for the type of foundation for the proposed structure. Evaluate the project site for liquefaction potential. There is a growing need of construction around the globe. This need tends to provide newer opportunities for construction of buildings over reclaimed lands or earth filled areas. Mostly, the earth is filled with soils as it is an easily available material. Soil is a complex materials, and its properties can vary due to several reasons. If not understood properly, it can damage undisturbed samples collected from earth-filled soils. The basic properties of soils, the stress-strain behavior and strength parameters are presented and discussed. Results show that soil exhibits strain hardening and normally consolidated behavior in direct shear and oedometer test respectively. It is observed that the compression index values are in the range of 0.157 to 0.182 which indicates that the material is silty soils with low plasticity. The allowable bearing capacity in our study was 305 kPa and allowable load on footing was 987 kN. The strength parameters, i.e., friction angle and cohesion are 37 • and 2 kPa respectively.

This paper discusses the design parameters that are required for the design of high-rise building foundations, and suggests that the method of assessment for these parameters should be consistent with the level of complexity involved for various stages in the design process. Requirements for effective ground investigation are discussed, together with relevant in-situ and laboratory test techniques for deriving the necessary strength and stiffness parameters. Some empirical correlations are also presented to assist in the early stages of design, and to act as a check for parameters that are deduced from more detailed testing. Pile load testing is then discussed and a method of interpreting bi-directional tests to obtain pile design parameters is outlined. Examples of the application of the assessment process are described, including high-rise projects in Dubai and Saudi Arabia

This study focuses on the analysis of the soil bearing capacities of the various cities and municipalities of Metro Manila, Philippines. The allowable soil bearing capacities to be used for foundation design were calculated through various theories and studies using geotechnical parameters, such as relative density and angle of internal friction. Standard Penetration Test (SPT) results were used to estimate these geotechnical parameters in order to obtain a good approximation of the soil's bearing capacity. Because of economic constraints, not all low-rise construction projects choose to perform soil exploration. Due to this, soil data are usually lacking and may cause problems when designing shallow foundations of these kinds of structures. In line with this kind of situation, the study can help engineers in designing shallow foundations by providing them a reference of the allowable soil bearing capacity of any area within Metro Manila. This will be able to give them a good idea of the soil's strength in supporting shallow foundations. The allowable bearing capacity of the soil shown in the reference is obtained from collected borehole data within Metro Manila and by using several geotechnical engineering theories. Contour maps of the bearing capacities are then made in order to provide an overview of the soil bearing capacity for shallow foundations. A Geographic Information System (GIS) software database was also made so as to store all the borehole location's data as well as serving another basis for estimation. This can be updated whenever new data is available.

Before the actual construction process starts, it is important to conduct a site investigation and soil exploration to acquire vital information about the soil and site conditions. In a construction site investigation is the first and crucial step. These are outlined in the project to ensure that the site is appropriate for the proposed construction and to offer recommendations on the design and construction processes. Following soil investigation based on the soil report, further geotechnical design of a shallow foundation was performed; however, the results indicated that the load coming from the structure was less than the results of the shallow foundation, so we opted for the geotechnical design of a pile foundation, which resulted at an end bearing capacity greater than the load coming from the structure. The geotechnical design of the pile consists of recommending the size of the pile and calculating the safe working load of each pile.

The study focuses on the analysis of the pile capacity and pile length for various cities of Metro Manila. Standard Penetration Test (SPT) N-values from soil reports were used to compute for the geotechnical parameters such as the undrained shear strength and the angle of internal friction which were directly applied in the computation of the allowable pile capacity. The estimation of the pile length, on the other hand, was done by means of determining the depth of the refusal or rock layer. The proposed minimum pile length and the allowable pile capacity values for each city are plotted to establish a contour map. By means of the collected borehole data, the allowable pile capacity was computed, which was shown in the reference as a series of contour maps. The contour maps were provided to show an overview of the soil's pile capacity at various locations in Metro Manila, Philippines. The contour maps presented vary by means of the design of pile, the size of the pile and the proposed pile length for a specific city or municipality and for the entire Metro Manila. A Geographic Information System (GIS) database was made so as to have storage for the collected borehole data and their locations. The database can be updated for the availability of new data.

The spate of engineering structures collapse in Lagos metropolis with its attendant loss of lives and properties has assumed an alarming proportion in recent times. Efforts to mitigate such incidence has necessitated an integrated geophysical and geotechnical investigation of a proposed four storey building sites with a view to determine the suitability of the site for the proposed project. Resistivity investigation, un-drained multi-stage triaxial compression and oedometer consolidation tests were carried out to determine the engineering properties of the subsurface. The results revealed peaty clay to silty sand materials characterized by 35kN/m 2 75kN/m 2 cohesion values, (5°-13°) internal friction, 29.3% 64.5% natural water content and 1.652 – 1.972 Mg/m 3 bulk density. The allowable bearing capacity of 50 kN/m 2 , volume compressibility from 0.115 m 2 /MN to 0.666 m 2 /MN, initial void ratio and consolidation coefficient of 0.779 1.381 and 2.7 m 2 /year 8.3 m 2 /year respectivel...
